Getting to kobe.

Three railway companies, Japan Railways (JR), Hankyu and Hanshin, operate railway lines between Osaka and Kobe 's Sannomiya Station:

JR special rapid trains require 20 minutes and cost 420 yen for the one way trip from Osaka Station to Kobe 's Sannomiya Station. You can also travel between the two cities by Sanyo Shinkansen in less than 15 minutes, however, the shinkansen stations in both Osaka (Shin-Osaka Station) and Kobe (Shin-Kobe Station) are not centrally located. The one way trip by shinkansen costs 1530 yen for a non-reserved seat.

Limited express trains on the Hankyu Kobe Line take 25 minutes and cost 330 yen from Osaka-Umeda Station to Kobe-Sannomiya Station. Osaka-Umeda Station is located just next to JR Osaka Station.

Hanshin operates direct trains from Osaka-Umeda Station (30 minutes, 330 yen) and Osaka-Namba Station (45 minutes, 420 yen) to Kobe-Sannomiya Station. Osaka-Umeda Station is located just next to JR Osaka Station.

Getting around

Kobe 's busiest railway station is not Kobe Station but Sannomiya Station at the city center. Sannomiya Station is served by multiple railway companies, including Japan Railways (JR), Hankyu Railway and Hanshin Railway. The shinkansen (bullet train) stops at Shin-Kobe Station , a short subway ride north of Sannomiya Station.

Distances between the attractions in central Kobe are relatively short, and good walkers can cover many of them on foot. There is also a tourist-oriented loop bus, which connects sites such as Kitano-cho , Nankinmachi , Meriken Park and Harborland with Shin-Kobe and Sannomiya Stations. The bus costs 260 yen per ride, while a day pass is available for 700 yen.

Kobe Airport is located on a man-made island just off the coast of central Kobe and can be reached by the Port Liner from Sannomiya Station in less than 20 minutes for 340 yen.

How To Get From Osaka to Kobe

The trip from Osaka to Kobe is one that is duly completed by thousands of commuters every day, as well as plenty of tourists. Though Kobe may be quite small, especially in comparison with its neighbors of Osaka and Kyoto, it’s a good idea to research exactly what part of the city you wish to get to, in order to find out how to get from Osaka to Kobe .

While there are plenty of different stations you could travel to, most of the rail connections between the two cities arrive in the central Sannomiya area, which is both in the heart of the city and near the coast. Sannomiya actually contains three stations under the same roof, as well as the useful Motomachi station nearby.

The other alternative is often Shin-Kobe, which is slightly further north and the primary stopping point for the high-speed Shinkansens which travel the length and breadth of Japan. Either way, Kobe is a small city and easy to get around, either on the train, the bus, or on foot.

Train from Osaka to Kobe

To take the Shinkansen , you must depart from the northerly Shin-Osaka station and arrive at the northerly Shin-Kobe station, which at least makes it easy to remember. The journey takes just 12 minutes, traveling at 230 km/h, and costs 2,250 Yen (ca. 22 USD). You can depart from the same station and arrive at Shin-Kobe by taking the JR Kyoto Line Rapid and transferring onto the Kobe subway from Sannomiya. This journey would take around 45 minutes for 760 Yen (ca 7,60 USD).

One of the busiest areas of Osaka is the Umeda district, home to an impressive array of skyscrapers and maze-like underground walkways. This is probably the best place to catch a train to Kobe as there a lot of options and almost all will arrive in the equally busy Kobe area of Sannomiya. Just as there are three competing stations in Sannomiya, there are three in Umeda. The JR Kobe Line is the most popular and fastest; it travels between JR Osaka Station and JR Sannomiya (Hyogo) Station in just over 20 minutes for 410 Yen (ca. 4 USD). Take the Special Rapid service to reach downtown Kobe in a flash.

The other two options are almost identical, even in name. The Hankyu and Hanshin companies provide slightly cheaper trains (both cost 320 Yen, ca 3 USD) for a slightly longer journey (both take approx. 30 minutes). The Hankyu train departs from Hankyu-Umeda Station to Hankyu-Sannomiya Station, and funnily enough, the Hanshin train departs from Hanshin-Umeda Station to Hanshin-Sannomiya Station.

Bus from Osaka to Kobe

Despite both being a part of the Keihanshin Metropolitan Area and essentially joined together, there are very few buses that ply the route between Osaka and Kobe. You can get a bus if you land at either of the region’s two airports. The Osaka Airport Limousine company has regular buses from Kansai International Airport (1,950, ca. 19 USD – 1 hour) and Osaka/Itami Airport (1,050 Yen, ca. 10 USD – 40 minutes). Both options proceed directly to Sannomiya.

Ferry from Osaka to Kobe

Those arriving at Kansai International Airport who wish to proceed directly to Kobe also have the intriguing option of taking a ferry across the bay. Both Kansai and the Kobe Airport are built on artificial islands in Osaka Bay and it is possible to travel directly between the two by high-speed ferry.

The voyage takes about 30 minutes and costs 1,850 Yen (ca. 18 USD) for adults and 930 Yen (ca. 9 USD) for children but foreign visitors are often able to take advantage of a 45% discount which offers tickets for just 1000 Yen (ca. 10 USD). Either way, the ferry is still both cheaper and faster than taking the bus and is a memorable introduction to the bay area.

The route is simple without passengers having to make any transfers. However, taking the bus, driving a car, or boarding a ferry may be more convenient depending on your travel route and situation.

1. JR Line: Simple and Easiest Route to Understand

The first transportation method is taking a JR train from Osaka Station. Board the special rapid bound for Himeji , which arrives and departs from platform 4. You will arrive at Sannomiya Station in Kobe in 25 minutes, which costs 460 yen.

2. Hankyu Railway: A Slightly Cheaper Option

The second way is to take the limited express on the Hankyu Railway from Hankyu Umeda Station . Get off at Hankyu Kobe-Sannomiya Station . It costs 330 yen and the travel time is 27 minutes. You can reach the city in nearly the same amount of time as the JR line with the fee being slightly cheaper.

Hankyu Kobe-Sannomiya Station is also nearby JR Sannomiya Station and Kobe Municipal Subway Sannomiya Station. It is about 1.2 kilometers away from Shin-Kobe Station serviced by the Shinkansen (bullet train).

3. Hanshin Electric Railway: The Third Railway Option

Kobe-Sannomiya Station, serviced by both Hanshin and Hankyu, and JR Sannomiya Station are connected to one another. However, let’s be cautious not to mix them up when boarding the train.

Additionally, Hanshin and Hankyu were originally rival companies. However, the two companies merged under the same group following the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995.

Hanshin typically services traditional downtown areas, while Hankyu is known to service trendy areas like Takarazuka. The Hankyu Hanshin 1-Day Pass (Japanese) (1,300 yen for adults) is a day pass that grants the holder unlimited rides for one day on both railways.

Photo by Pixta Osaka and Kobe are also connected by the Shinkansen (bullet train). If you take the Shinkansen, it will take 12 minutes from JR Shin-Osaka Station to JR Shin-Kobe Station. The cost is 1,530 yen (non-reserved seats).

At a glance, it may seem like the fastest method. However, it isn’t necessarily any faster than the other transportation routes. It takes about 15 minutes on foot to get from JR Shin-Kobe Station to JR Sannomiya Station and Kobe-Sannomiya Station on the Hanshin and Hankyu Railways.

However, the Shinkansen is a convenient mode of transportation for those running errands in the Shin-Osaka and Shin-Kobe Station areas.

If you are visiting from overseas and have a Japan Rail Pass or Kansai WIDE Area Pass , then you can use it for the Shinkansen. These passes allow the holder unlimited rides on Shinkansen trains with the exception of Nozomi trains.

5. Convenient Buses From Universal Studios Japan and the Airport

You can also travel back and forth between Osaka and Kobe by bus.

Buses bound for Sannomiya in Kobe depart from Universal Studios Japan (USJ) and Itami Airport (Osaka International Airport) in Osaka. If you depart from USJ, the travel time to Sannomiya is about 40 minutes and costs 700 yen (Shinki Bus). If you depart from Itami Airport, then the travel time to Sannomiya is also 40 minutes and costs 1,070 yen (Airport Limousine Bus).

Taking the bus is a great option if you travel to Kobe from these places.

6. Car: Useful for Road Trips and Transporting Large Luggage

Photo by Pixta You can also access Kobe from Osaka by driving. Travel time from Osaka Station to JR Sannomiya Station is about 45 minutes. Highway toll fees will be 1,320 yen, with gasoline expenses added on top of that.

At a glance, you may feel like a car has few financial benefits compared to trains. However, it would cost the same as the train or be slightly cheaper if you are traveling with four or more people.

Do you plan on traveling to other sightseeing destinations like Arima Onsen or Kinosaki Onsen? Are you planning to shop a lot and carry around large amounts of luggage? Then a car would be convenient in these situations.

7. Take the Bay Shuttle Between Airports

Lastly, we’ll introduce a unique mode of transportation you’ll only find in the port city of Kobe.

You can travel between Kansai International Airport and Kobe Airport in 30 minutes by the Bay Shuttle , a high-speed ferry. Fares cost 1,880 yen one-way, but you’ll receive a discount by purchasing a roundtrip ticket priced at 3,060 yen.

A great amenity that Bay Shuttle provides is a free private parking lot at Kobe terminal. The complimentary parking is free regardless of the number of nights your vehicle is there during your trip. Why not take advantage of this parking lot if you’re traveling by car since parking fees cost over 1,000 yen per day?

The Perfect Kobe Day Trip (One Day Itinerary)

Planning a Kobe day trip from Osaka or Kyoto? We’ve put together this one day itinerary to help you make the most of it.

While it’s known best for its expensive but delicious beef, Kobe has way more to offer. And since it’s only 30–45 minutes by train from Osaka, Kobe makes for a great day trip destination.

Kobe has a fascinating history, having played an important part in being the main harbour for international trade after Japan opened its borders for the first time in 200 years back in 1868. As the 6th biggest city in Japan and the capital of the Hyogo Prefecture, Kobe is definitely a place to consider visiting.

There are quite a lot of things to do in Kobe, so this day trip itinerary is just a suggestion (this is what we did on our trip to Kobe). Feel free to take from it with works for you or make any changes necessary.

If you’re planning to take a day trip to Kobe yourself, I’ve put together this itinerary to help you make the most of it. Everything you need to know can be found below!

10. Make your way back to Osaka

Kobe day trip itinerary.

Here’s how to make the most of your Osaka to Kobe day trip:

1. Take the train from Osaka to Kobe

To start your day trip to Kobe, get on the train from Osaka (or Kyoto, depending on where you’re staying!). The journey itself shouldn’t take longer than 30–45 minutes.

Try to leave early though. Especially if you only have one day in Kobe, you want to make sure you make the most of it.

2. Explore Kitano

1868 is a year that will be mentioned a few times throughout this itinerary. It’s a big one for Kobe (and Japan), as it was the year the city opened up to foreign trade after the country’s borders were closed for over 200 years.

Because of this, Kobe became the home of many foreign merchants and diplomats. The area they settled in was called Kitano-cho. The houses they built and lived in were definitely inspired by their homelands – resulting in quite a few Western-style mansions that still stand here today.

It’s such a big part of Kobe’s history. Walking through the area gives you a good idea of what life used to be like in this part of the city. Many of the houses can be entered for a small fee, with some of them having a museum inside. But even if you’re not planning to go inside, it’s nice to have a little wander around – it’s on the way to the next point on this Kobe itinerary anyways!

There is also a special Starbucks in this part of Kobe. It’s located in one of the colonial-styled buildings and is decorated inside. If you’ve not had your caffeine fix before, this is the time to grab a coffee.

3. Take the Kobe Ropeway

To get to the next stop on our list (the Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens), you have a choice of hiking up the hill or taking the iconic ropeway. Spoiler alert: I’d recommend getting the ropeway!

You can choose to pay for a single ticket to get you up the hill and walk down. This is a more cost-efficient way than getting a return ticket, especially since the walk down is quite easy and filled with beautiful plants to look at. If you’re not sure, you can always buy a return ticket (which also gives you the option to walk down to the mid-way station and use the ropeway for the remaining part).

From the ropeway, you get to join some of the best views in Kobe. The journey takes around 10 minutes and you can see as far as Osaka on a clear day!

4. Wander through Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens

Once you reach the end of the ropeway, you will have arrived at the Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens . 

The ropeway ticket also includes entry to the gardens, so it’s definitely worth getting. As mentioned before, you can choose to get a return ticket, walk through the gardens to the mid-station and take the ropeway back. Or, you can choose to walk all the way down.

The gardens are vast! Divided into 12 areas, each part of the herb garden has a different theme with different plants. In total, there are more than 75,000 plants – and there’s something to enjoy in every season.

You can also find a herbal foot bath, a couple of museums (one about fragrances and one about spices) and a restaurant with a viewing deck. You can easily spend a couple of hours here, and since the walk down the hill is filled with beautiful plants and gardens, it’s a real treat – especially on a sunny day!

5. Visit Ikuta Shrine

Once you’re back down, head over to Ikuta Shrine. Kobe isn’t a large city, especially the area that we’re covering in this day trip guide, so you can avoid public transport. 

Most of the sights are only 10–15 minutes from each other on foot, and wandering through Japanese cities is always a treat. You’ll never know what you’ll find in the small side streets. Make sure you’ve got Google Maps installed on your phone (the only essential travel app in Japan !), and you’ll easily be able to find the best routes.

Anyways, back to Ikuta Shrine. This beautiful shrine is one of the oldest in Kobe (and possibly one of the oldest in the whole of Japan), dating all the way back to 201.

The main shrine is quite impressive. A large torii gate welcomes you and admission is free. Many people come here to pray for romance and safe childbirth. 

Behind the main shrine, you can find a small garden called the Ikuta Forest. It even has a row of torii gates (almost like a smaller version of Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Taisha ).

6. Kobe Chinatown Nankinmachi 

From Ikuta Shrine, Kobe’s Chinatown is only a 15-minute walk. This is the next stop on our Kobe itinerary.

Nankinmachi is one of Japan’s three Chinatowns (the other ones can be found in ​​Yokohama and Nagasaki ). It’s not very large, but it has a lovely atmosphere and it’s a great place to grab some street food.

Since Kobe is a harbour city, many foreigners settled here when Japan opened its borders to foreign traders in 1868, including the Chinese. This is the area where they settled. During the Second World War, a large part of the area was burned down and it wasn’t rebuilt properly until the 1970s.

However, nowadays, it’s a lively area of Kobe filled with street food vendors, restaurants and shops.

7. Explore Kobe port

The area near Kobe Port (or Kobe Bay) is another great place to explore. And there are quite a few sights to see in this area!

For starters, the Kobe Earthquake memorial can be found here. In 1995, a terrible earthquake took the lives of 6,400 people in Kobe. 

A little bit further, you can see the iconic Kobe Tower. The tower stands 108 meters tall and is shaped like an hourglass (or a traditional Japanese drum). It’s possible to visit the observation deck in the tower for a 360 degrees view of the city.

Near the seafront, there’s also a Starbucks, a park and the Be Kobe sign for pictures. 

8. Visit Kobe Harborland

A little further (between the JR Kobe Station and Kobe Port) lies Kobe Harborland . While it almost sounds like a theme park, it’s more like a shopping and entertainment area in the city. 

There is a big shopping mall (Umie), lots of restaurants, and even a Ferris wheel (that lights up at night!).

9. Eat Kobe beef

And, of course, we can’t leave Kobe without trying its famous beef. If you’re not sure what Kobe beef is exactly, here’s a quick recap. Kobe beef is a type of Japanese Wagyu beef and it’s known to be the most delicious (and expensive) beef in the world.

This incredibly tender meat comes from special Tajima cattle raised in the Hyogo prefecture (where Kobe is located). Every year, only around 3,000 cows are selected as good enough to be classed as official Kobe beef. With such limited supply, you can already guess that this isn’t a cheap takeaway meal…

But what better place to try Kobe beef than in Kobe itself?

After having walked around the city all day, you will most definitely already have seen some signs from restaurants advertising Kobe beef. However, if you want to try the real deal, you’ll have to be careful. Always do your research! Some restaurants try to be clever and sell regular beef as “Kobe beef” as it’s sold in Kobe – that’s not the same as actual Kobe beef.

To make sure you eat (and pay for) real Kobe beef, make sure the restaurant has a plaque and certificate to show you. This will prove the steak you’re eating is officially classed as Kobe beef. It sounds a bit over the top, but if you’re going to spend £100 on a steak, you want it to be worth it, right?

We ended up having our Kobe steak at Mouriya Sannomiyaten. And I have to agree, it was the best steak I’ve ever had in my life. The whole experience was really great too – we had a private chef cooking the meat in front of us, explaining how to eat it properly.

If you’re on a budget but still want to try Kobe beef, it can be worth looking for lunch deals instead. Some restaurants offer cheaper lunch options including real Kobe beef – you can then always go to Chinatown in the evening for dinner instead!

Luckily, you don’t have to rush to get a train back to Osaka since it’s only 30–45 minutes. Trains leave often, so you’ll have some time to wander around and enjoy Kobe at night. 

There are some great bars and arcades to check out, or you can head back earlier (there are so many great things to do in Osaka at night too!).

Is Kobe worth a day trip?

It depends. While Kobe is a lovely city with a ton of great things to do, there are some better places to visit nearby. If you’re visiting Japan for the first time and you don’t have a lot of time, it may be better to skip Kobe and spend more time in Osaka, Kyoto or take a day trip to Nara . That is, unless you have a very specific reason for wanting to add Kobe to your Japan itinerary .

If you do have enough time, Kobe definitely makes for a great day trip from Osaka . There’s more than enough to do to fill a day (even a weekend!), plus eating real Kobe beef in the city makes for a great experience.

KOBE DAY TOUR FROM OSAKA: A DIY Itinerary

“Why do you keep going back to Osaka?”

It’s a question we always get from our friends and followers, but it’s also one that is very easy to answer. Osaka isn’t just a destination on its own, it is also a gateway to other cities and prefectures!

Osaka is the largest city in the Kansai Region. It is also located at the very heart of it, making it an ideal jump off base for travelers who wish to see many other spots on this side of Japan. Most importantly, with the exception of Tokyo, it is also the most well-connected city, boasting an intricate network of railways and bus routes that stem to even some of the most remote corners of the region.

One of the destinations you can easily visit from Osaka is Kobe . The capital of Hyogo Prefecture, Kobe is the sixth largest city in Japan and has always been one of the most important port cities in the country. In this post, we’ll explore Kobe and discover the things that you can enjoy in a day with information on how to get there if you’re staying in Osaka.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

The Passes You Need for this Osaka-Kobe Trip

Transportation companies in Kansai are very competitive, especially in enticing foreign tourists to use their service. You’ll be surprised how many transportation passes are available out there! Just looking at the number of train passes alone can induce choice paralysis.

But don’t worry, we already identified the passes you will need for this trip: Hanshin Tourist Pass and Rokkosan Tourist Pass .

Hanshin Tourist Pass

The Hanshin Tourist Pass will give you unlimited access to the Hanshin Main Line, which connects Osaka and Kobe, and all other Hanshin and Kobe Kosoku lines. The card is valid for one day. It is operated by Hanshin Electric Railway Co., Ltd., commonly referred to as simply Hanshin.

The pass normally costs ¥700. But is an ongoing promo and you can avail of it for only ¥500. Imagine: unlimited access for only ¥500!

Using it is very simple too. All you need to do is insert the card into the designated slot. No need to fall in line over and over again. This means that you get to save both time and money. Don’t forget to pick it up on the other side!

The pass is available at these locations:

• Kansai Tourist Information Center at the Arrival Hall of Kansai Airport
• Hankyu Tourist Center – Osaka Umeda
• BIC Camera Namba and Abeno Q’s Mall

Hotel Hanshin Osaka

• Hotel New Hankyu Osaka
• Hanshin Koku Travel Salon

Rokkosan Tourist Pass

One of the major attractions in this itinerary is Mt. Rokko . It takes multiple transfers to get there so having the Rokkosan Tourist Pass can give you more savings and convenience. This pass isn’t unlimited but it covers the entire journey from select train stations in Kobe to Mt. Rokko Mountaintop Tourism Area and back.

With this pass, you can use the following:

• Kobe City Bus 16 and 106
• Rokko Cable Car
• Rokko Sanjo Bus (unlimited rides)

The pass has five tickets attached to it. Each time you’re disembarking, you must tear the ticket off and hand it to the driver.

The pass costs ¥1000. You can also book online via Klook!

How to Get from Osaka to Kobe

If you’re staying in Umeda area, start your trip at the Hanshin-Umeda Station (HS 01) , the start point and terminus of Hanshin Main Line. This is an underground station next to Hanshin Department Store.

There is an information center at the station, so if you have questions, you can just ask away. There are also a lot of free brochures available to aid you with your navigation or give you recommendation.

From here, your first stop is Uozaki Station (HS 23) in Kobe.

Travel time: 22 minutes if you take Limited Express train or 52 minutes if you take the local train Fare: FREE with pass. ¥280 without the pass.

Places to Visit in Kobe

Sake factories and museums.

Nearest Station: Uozaki (HS 23, Hanshin Main Line)

Welcome to Kobe’s Nada District , one of the largest producers of sake in Japan!

Sake is often called Japanese rice wine. But in Japan, the term used is nihonshu because sake in the vernacular refers to any type of alcoholic drink. Sake is a curious drink. It’s called rice wine but it looks like a distilled drink and the process of creating it is closer to beer brewing. However, the complex flavor profiles, alcohol content, and how people usually appreciate it are very wine-like.

Kobe’s Nada District is home to several sake breweries because it has all the elements that are needed to create top-quality sake: plenty supply of rice, clean freshwater, and the right weather conditions. We were able to visit two breweries and museums in the area: Kikumasamune Sake Museum and Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum.

Both can be visited FREE of charge. Both showcase the journey of rice from harvest to fermentation through various displays. You can use your phone to capture a QR code and use it as guide as you explore. The guides are also available in multiple languages. Hakutsuru even has a Tagalog option! Both will also allow you to sample different types of sake after the tour.

You can choose just one sake brewery for this itinerary. Both are very good, presenting the whole process in a way that is easy to understand.

Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum Hours open: 9:30am to 4:00pm Entrance Fee: FREE

Kikumasamune Sake Museum Hours open: 9:30am to 4:00pm Entrance Fee: FREE

Rokko Snow Park (Mt. Rokko)

From either sake museum, trace your steps back to Uozaki Station and take the Hanshin Main Line again to Hanshin Mikage Station (HS25) using your Hanshin Tourist Pass.

Travel time: 2 minutes Fare: ¥140 without the pass, FREE with Hanshin Tourist Pass

Here’s how to get to Rokko Snow Park from this point:

• At Hanshin Mikage Station, take the Kobe City Bus 16 that will take you to Rokko Cable Shita Station. You’ll need to use the green stub of your pass and give it to the driver before you alight. Travel time: 15-30 minutes. Fare: ¥210 without the pass, FREE with the pass.
• At the Rokko Cable Shita Station, take the Rokko Cable Car which will take you up to Rokko Cable Sanjo Station. You will need to show the blue ticket to the staff before boarding. Fare: ¥590 without the pass, FREE with the pass. Travel time: 10 minutes.
• Take the Rokko Sanjo Bus to Rokko Mountaintop Tourism Area. Don’t detach the red stub yet. You’ll do that after you make the return trip. Travel time: 9-13 minutes. Fare: ¥260 without the pass, FREE with the pass.
• Alight at Rokko Snow Park. That’s it!

Rokko Snow Park is just one of the many attractions atop Mt. Rokko! Others include Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden, Rokko International Musical Box, Museum, Rokko-Arima Ropeway, Rokko-Shidare Observatory and Tenran Observatory.

We chose Rokko Snow Park because we were traveling in winter and Vins has never tried skiing before. It’s a great place to learn to ski because it’s not too big. It is also the closest snow park to Osaka.

This isn’t my first time skiing. Although I am still not very good at it (!!!), I already know the basics and can confidently ski down a slope without problem. Vins is another story, though. He’s tall and a complete beginner, so it took him quite a while to get the hang of it.

Here are the rates:

• Entrance fee: ¥2100 adult, ¥1050 child
• Lift Fee: ¥150 per ride
• Ski and snow gear rental: ¥4650 adult, ¥3600 child (includes skis, poles, boots, gloves, top and bottom garments)
• Snow shoes rental (shoes only): ¥500

If you get hungry before or after your snow activity, drop by Restaurant Alpen Rose , which serves meals for as low as ¥750.

Once you think you’ve had enough, just trace your steps back to Hanshin Mikage Station and take the Hanshin Main Line Direct Express to Motomachi Station .

Travel time: 8-13 minutes. Fare: ¥190 without the pass, FREE with Hanshin Tourist Pass

From Motomachi Station, travel on foot to Kobe Harborland.

Kobe Harborland and Meriken Park

Nearest Hanshin Station: Motomachi (HS33)

Kobe Harborland is a seaside shopping and entertainment destination, peppered with several department stores including Umie.

Umie is perhaps the most well-known of departments store in the district. Housing dozens of stores and restaurants, it is divided into three sections: North Mall, South Mall, and Mosaic. Of the three, Mosaic is the most scenic because it allows a fantastic view of the Meriken Park. If you can, wait until the evening and watch the harbor light up! Its most iconic structures like the Kobe Maritime Museum and the Kobe Port Tower look so much better at night.

If you want, you can also make your way to Meriken Park. Otherwise, trace your steps back to Motomachi Station and make your way by Hanshin Main Line back to Osaka:

Travel time: 36 minutes Fare: ¥320 without the pass, FREE with the pass

Hanshin Umeda Main Department Store Snack Park

Nearest Station: Umeda (HS01)

DINNER TIME! Since you’re already at Hanshin Umeda Station, which is just beside Hanshin Umeda Main Department Store, you might want to check out their newly reopened Snack Park.

Hanshin Snack Park has been a popular stand-up food court even among locals. It’s composed of over a dozen food kiosks serving a wide variety of Japanese delights including takoyaki, sushi, and ramen. Established in 1957, it was recently renovated to improve the overall dining experience.

Many of the original favorites are still here. Among the most popular is ikayaki , a crepe-like snack that is filled with bits of squid (¥152). You can also choose to have leeks and soy sauce added to it (¥162). We’ve tried both and they were delicious, especially given how cheap they are. I was expecting them to taste like takoyaki, but it was far from it. It’s like a slightly denser pancake but more savory than sweet. And the squid filling add a nice texture, something that made me keep on eating.

In one corner stands a sushi bar, which takes pride in their fresh seafood toppings including tuna, salmon, salmon roe, scallops, crab, and mackerel. The most expensive item on their menu is o-toro, choicest raw fatty tuna belly, and uni, sea urchin (¥432 a piece). Others range from ¥162 to ¥648 for 2 pieces.

But the best thing we tried that night was the ramen served by the stall named Kadoya Shokudo . They serve traditional ramen, with shoyu broth and Chinese noodles. Although my palate favors rich, bold flavors, I was pleasantly surprised by its light broth, which had the perfect mix of saltiness and umami. The noodles were more on the thin, soft side.

If you still have more time, walk a little bit and you’ll find…

HEP FIVE Ferris Wheel

Nearest Station: Umeda (HS01) Admission Fee: ¥600 Hours open: 11:00am to 10:45pm

Just a few minutes from Hanshin Department Store is HEP FIVE , another mall bursting with shops that target mostly the younger market. Here’s a brief summary of the above itinerary. I’m not indicating the exact time to give you some wiggle room in case you want to stay longer at a stop.

I also included a budget breakdown. Note that this assumes you have a Hanshin Tourist Pass and a Rokkosan Tourist Pass!

If you’re skiing at Rokko Snow Park for a few hours, the above itinerary will cost you around ¥14,000 (PH6715, USD128, SGD173) per person, excluding airfare, accommodations, visa fees, travel taxes, and shopping budget. Note that the bulk of this budget goes to ski rental.

If you’re visiting Rokko Snow Park just for sightseeing or you just want to play with the sled, the above itinerary will set you back around ¥8000 (PHP3835, USD73, SGD99) per person, excluding airfare, accommodations, visa fees, travel taxes, and shopping budget.

Notice that you only spent ¥1500 (¥1700 outside promo period) on transportation. That’s ¥1000 on Rokkosan Tourist Pass and ¥500 (¥700 outside promo period) on Hanshin Tourist Pass.

If you don’t have these two passes, you will be spending a total of ¥3050 on transportation. But if you have the passes, you’ll be racking up a total of ¥1550 in savings!

Where to Stay in Osaka

The above itinerary assumes you’re staying near Umeda or any Hanshin Main Line Station. The area surrounding Umeda Station is an ideal place to stay in Osaka because of the sheer number of attractions and dining places. Umeda is home to some of the city’s most recognizable attractions including the HEP FIVE Ferris Wheel and Umeda Sky Building.

Just one station away from Umeda Station is Fukushima Station which is also surrounded by lots of accommodation choices. The area is also littered with restaurants especially ramen bars and yakiniku that are favorites among locals. It is also within walking distance of Osaka Station. Fukushima Station is part of the Hanshin Main Line, which means it is also covered by the Hanshin Tourist Pass.

Here are two properties you might want to consider. Both properties are also very accessible from Kansai Airport. You can take a Hanshin Limousine Bus to Osaka Station (Herbis Osaka) and just walk a little bit from the bus stop.

First Cabin Hanshin Nishiumeda

First Cabin is a popular chain of capsule hotels. At its core, it is a capsule hotel but is done in a more sophisticated fashion. The interiors are stylish, slick, and impeccably neat. It is designed in a way that mimics a luxury aircraft, with business-class and first-class capsules. An overnight stay costs ¥4000 to ¥6000, depending on the season. You can also stay for only a few hours if that’s all you need.

We were able to check out their Hanshin Nishiumeda branch located close to Osaka Station and Fukushima Station.

If you have a bigger budget, Hotel Hanshin Osaka is also an option. It takes pride in having natural hot spring in each room, ensuring that you have a relaxing time during your stay. Will you touring every single day of those nine days? Kasi baka you don’t need a single pass for the entire trip but instead do it one day at a time. This way, if you decide na mag-rest day, di ka mape-pressure.

For example, when exploring Osaka from Kobe, you can use a combination of Hanshin Tourist Pass and Osaka Amazing Pass.

For Kyoto, try Hankyu Tourist Pass.

For Nara, combination of Hanshin Tourist Pass and Kintetsu 1 Day Pass. Or if Nara Park lang ang pupuntahan mo sa Nara, just use Hanshin Tourist Pass to get to Osaka (and back) and then regular tickets na lang.

Osaka to Kobe Day Trip: Best Things to Do in Kobe in One Day

As the 6th largest city in Japan, Kobe is located on the south side of the main island of Honshu . The capital city of Hyogo Prefecture is known for its busy port, culturally influenced districts, and the production of Kobe beef.

Initially, I wanted to take a Kobe day trip from Osaka because I wanted to eat Kobe Beef. Yes, a lot of my trips are very much motivated by food. But I was pleasantly surprised by all the things to do in Kobe, including the diverse neighbourhoods and the city’s panoramic views.

Osaka to Kobe Day Trip: what you need to know

Before starting your day trip to Kobe, take a look at my post on everything you need to know before going to Japan . I included a lot of travel information, including how to get around Japan and other travel tips.

Here are a few additional travel tips that you may find useful for your Kobe itinerary:

• ICOCA is the prepaid IC card for Hyogo Prefecture. It is a rechargeable smartcard where you can take public transportation, including buses and trains (Japan Railway, Hanshin Railway and Hankyu Railway). It is useful, especially if you are doing a Kobe day trip from Osaka.
• The best way to experience this Kobe itinerary is on foot . All the attractions are within walking distance.
• Kobe is a safe city for solo female travellers . Even if you are taking the train at night from Kobe to Osaka, it is super safe.
• Kobe Bon Odori Festival (mid-August) – attend a summer festival with traditional dance and folk songs in Meriken Park. 
• Minato Kobe Marine Fireworks Festival (late October) – enjoy the fireworks in Meriken Park.
• Nankinmachi Lantern Festival (December to January) – see over 400 Chinese lanterns in Kobe’s Nankinmachi Square

How to travel to Kobe from Osaka

First of all, Kobe is only 30km west of Osaka in the Kansai Region and there are several railways that can take you from Osaka to Kobe.

My ideal Osaka to Kobe day trip starts at Sannomiya Station in Kobe, where the station is closer to the city centre. Take Japan Railway, Hanshin Railway or Hankyu Railway from Osaka. The duration and cost of each railway are similar.

Then at the end of the day, return to Osaka from Kobe Station on Japan Railway . Check the exact train schedules and fares on Hyperdia for all three railways .

• Osaka Station to JR Sannomiya Station (20 minutes, ¥410 (covered by JR Pass)

Hanshin Railway

• Osaka-Umeda Station (Hanshin) Station to Kobe-Sannomiya (Hanshin) Station (31 minutes ¥320)

Hankyu Railway

• Osaka-Umeda (Hankyu) Station to Kobe-Sannomiya (Hankyu) Station (27 minutes, ¥320)

How to travel back to Osaka from Kobe

As mentioned above, the perfect day trip starts with arriving at Sannomiya Station in Kobe and leaving Kobe from Kobe Station. And only Japan Railway can take you back to Osaka from Kobe Station.

• Kobe Station to Osaka Station (25 minutes,¥410 (covered by JR Pass)

Kobe Itinerary: What to do in Kobe in 1 day

As I mentioned, my ideal day trip to Kobe from Osaka starts with taking one of the three railways from Osaka to Sannomiya Station. The day trip ends with a trip back to Osaka from Kobe Station .

I like this route because you don’t have to backtrack to Sannomiya Station to catch your train back to Osaka. I’m all about creating an efficient and time-saving itinerary!

So here is how you use the Kobe interactive map. All the top things to do in Kobe are pinned with coloured pins.  Red numbered pins are all the must-see attractions   on Day 1 ,  blue pins are other things to do in   Kobe  if you want to change the itinerary and  green pins are day trip ideas from Kobe .

1. Visit Ikuta Jinja

The Kobe day tour starts with a visit to Ikuta Jinja , one of the most visited shrine in Kobe. Local visit the Shinto Shrine and pray for good health and happiness as Ikuta Shrine is the symbol of hope.

The vermilion-lacquered giant torii gates at the entrance welcome you to the Zen temple. Then see Honden (the main hall), one of the oldest Shinto Shrines in Japan as the shrine dates back to 3rd century AD.

While you are there, also check out other buildings on the premise, ponds and various torii gates as well. And if you are visiting Kobe in the fall, you can see a traditional Japanese play during Ikuta’s Autumn Festival .

2, 3, 4 & 5. Wander around Kitano-cho

When the city of Kobe opened to foreign trade in 1868, many foreign merchants and diplomats moved to Kobe and settled in Kitano-cho . Today, it is a historical district with many of these foreign residences , also known as ijinkan .

And many of these foreign residences function like a museum where you can see antiques, artworks and historical items of that particular culture. Some highlights include the Weathercock House and Uroko House . Most houses charge between ¥500 to ¥750. Or you can buy a combination ticket for ￥1,400 or ￥2,800.

Even if you don’t visit the foreign residences, walk around Kitano Ijinkan-Gai (Main Street) and enjoy a stroll around the quaint area. And enjoy a view of Kobe from Kitano Tenman Shrine .

6 & 7. Try Kobe Beef

A day trip to Kobe wouldn’t be the same if you didn’t try Kobe beef ! And Kobe beef is pretty unique. It is from Tajima black cattle raised only in Hyogo Prefecture and only about 3,000 cattle can be qualified as Kobe beef each year.

It is a type of Wagyu beef where it can be prepared in one of several ways including sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, sushi, or it can be eaten as a steak fillet or beef cutlet .

Steakland is a popular and touristy teppanyaki restaurant where the chef cooks the Kobe beef on a hot flat skillet in front of you. A set meal includes salad, grilled vegetables, rice, miso soup, pickled vegetables and Kobe beef.

Or try Wagyu Hitsumabushi (thin slices of beef in lacquer rice bowl) or Wagyu Sukiyaki at Aka Noren , a popular restaurant that specializes in Wagyu beef. Or try steak fillet or Wagyu beef cutlet from their a la carte menu.

Budget tip : It is cheaper to eat Kobe beef at lunch rather than at dinner. Many Wagyu beef set lunches across the city are very affordable.

8 & 9. Walk across Sannomiya Center Gai Shopping Street and Motomachidori

After eating a delicious Kobe beef lunch, continue your Kobe day trip itinerary by walking through two of Kobe’s most well-known pedestrian shopping streets.

Sannomiya Center Gai Shopping Street is a large covered shopping street starting from Sannomiya Station and ends at Tor Road. The busy shopping street has many retail stores for trendy fashion, hip cafes and restaurants.

Not far away is Motomachidori , a historical shopping street where some of the retailers have more than 100 years of history. It starts near JR Motomachi Station and stretches 1.2km to the west. But you don’t have to walk the entire length – most active retailers are on the east end. Plus, you’ll want to jump over to the next attraction on the Kobe itinerary.

10. Eat street food in Nankinmachi

When the city of Kobe opened for foreign trade in 1868, many Chinese immigrants moved to Kobe and settled near Kobe Port. The area grew but was destroyed during World War II. But Nankinmachi , Kobe’s Chinatown District , was rebuilt and became one of the most active Chinese communities in the Kansai region.

Kobe’s Chinatown consists of two main streets intersecting at a small plaza in the centre. Many street food vendors and Chinese restaurants lining the main road. Also, there are three archways at Chinatown’s south, west and east end and a pair of lions guard the north entrance .

This is an excellent place to eat in Kobe . Try Chuka Ryori (Japanese adapted Chinese food) if you are not too full from your Kobe beef lunch. Or you can get some steamed pork buns from Rōshōki to-go – they are the most popular food vendor in Nankinmachi.

11, 12, 13 & 14. Wander around Meriken Park and Kobe Harbour

Kobe Harbour is particularly beautiful at night when all the lights are on and shining on all the major buildings. Many people living in Osaka (especially couples) like to visit Kobe on a day trip. And they especially like to visit Kobe Harbour at night as it is one of the most romantic places in Kobe.

At the end of your Kobe day trip, visit some of the highlights in Meriken Park and Kobe Harbour before catching the Japan Railway train from Kobe Station back to Osaka. The last train going back to Osaka is at 12:30 am.

• Be Kobe – take a photo next to the iconic sign commemorating the 150th anniversary of Kobe Port.
• Kobe Port Tower – the 108m (354 ft) tall tower resembles the hourglass shape of a tsuzumi , a traditional Japanese drum. There are several observatory levels and a rotating cafe. However, the Kobe Port Tower is is temporarily closed for renovation.
• Mosaic – see the colourful Mosaic Big Ferris Wheel, shop for souvenirs and may be have dinner before returning to Osaka.
• Umie North Mall – excellent shopping mall that you have to walk through on the way to Kobe Station.

Other suggested attractions for your Kobe itinerary

There are so many things to do in Kobe that it was difficult to choose what to do in one day. But if you are staying longer in Kobe or want to change up the itinerary, here are some other suggestions:

• Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens – see over 75,000 plants and over 200 types of herbs and flowers blooming all year round. It is Japan’s largest herb garden!
• Kobe City Museum – it has the world’s largest collection of Namban Art, or “Southern Barbarian Art” (a Japanese art style developed in the 1500s when trading with the West began).
• Kobe Maritime Museum – learn about Japanese trading ships and the history of Kobe port. The exterior of the museum is a large white lattice structure that resembles a sailboat.
• Takenaka Carpenter Tools Museum – the only museum in Japan dedicated to carpentry tools.
• Atoa – a new creative space that features aquariums and interactive art.

If you are spending more than one day in Kobe

If you decide to stay in Kobe longer than a day, there are other things to do outside of the city centre. Here are some suggestions:

1. Have a hot spring experience at Arima Onsen

Whether you visit Arima Onsen as a day trip or stay overnight in the hot spring town, you will thoroughly enjoy the scenery of Japan’s oldest hot spring town. Try the famous “ Kinsen ” golden hot spring (spring water turns into a reddish-brown colour once the water touches the air). Iron and sodium chloride is excellent for your skin and circulation.

How to get to Arima: take the subway from Sannomiya Station to Tanigami Station, change train to Arimaguchi Station, then change one more train to Arimaonsen Station. The entire journey takes 36 minutes and costs ¥690.

2. Hike Mount Rokko

Hike up Mount Rokko and see a panoramic view of the city of Kobe. On a clear day, you can see as far as Osaka ! While you are there, see other attractions like Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden , Rokko International Musical Box Museum and Rokko Garden Terrace . Also consider going at night because the night view is fantastic!

How to get to Mount Rokko : take Hankyu Railway from Sannomiya Station to Rokko Station (15 minutes, ¥200). Then take Kobe City Bus #16 to Rokko Cablecar (14 minutes, ¥210). Then take Rokko Cablecar up Mount Rokko (10 minutes, ¥600 one way or ¥1,100 round trip).

3. Visit Himeji Castle in Himeji

Himeji Castle , also known as the White Heron Castle, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Japan’s top castles. While you are visiting Himeji , make sure to visit Koko-en Garden and  Engyoji Temple  in  Mount Shosha .

How to get to Himeji: take Japan Railway from Sannomiya Station to Himeji Station. The journey takes only 40 minutes and costs ¥990.

Where to stay in Kobe Japan as a solo traveller

It is possible to see all the best Kobe attractions in one day, but I highly recommend staying in Kobe for a few nights. Kobe accommodations are cheaper than Osaka and it is an excellent hub for seeing other places in the area.

When I stayed overnight in Kobe, I stayed at these hotels which are centrally located and great for solo travellers.

• Kobe Plaza Hotel West ($) – the compact room is big enough for one person and is next to Chinatown. Check Agoda for prices & reviews.
• Candeo Hotels Kobe Tor Road ($$) – the 4-star hotel has modern guest rooms and is within walking distance of most attractions. Plus, it has a sky spa on the top floor. Check Agoda for prices & reviews.

Osaka To Kobe One Day Itinerary: A Gastronomic Family Experience

Today is our sixth day in Japan. We still have two more days, but it feels like I am already missing this wonderful country. My personal mission here is almost over. I already took the kids to Super Nintendo World , and I already bought my gaming console . There is one thing left to do: date my wife over the legendary Kobe steak .

Read on if you are planning a Kobe day trip itinerary from Osaka. I wrote about the best things to do in Kobe for one day with your family, including attractions, activities, restaurants, hidden gems, and train routes.

• Travel to Kobe from Osaka via bus and train.
• Lunch at Kobe Meriken Hatoba .

• Heavy snack and tour at Rokko Morinone Museum .

Hotel She, Osaka in Osaka (Minato), is within a 5-minute drive of Kyocera Dome Osaka and Dotonbori. This hotel is 5.2 km from Universal Studios Japan and 3.8 km from Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan.

Our day trip to Kyoto yesterday was a disaster. We had a great travel plan, but we didn’t have the time and energy to make it work. In the end, we chose not to stress about it and simply enjoyed the day with a laid-back schedule. Nevertheless, we learned our lesson and made sure it didn’t happen to our Osaka to Kobe trip.

Today’s highlight is the steak, and we have to be at Kobe before 12 PM. We have a reservation, so we can’t slack like yesterday. We got out of Hotel She, Osaka at 10:17 AM, and arrived at Kobe by 11:54 AM.

Lunch at Steak & Grill Kobe Meriken Hatoba

Meriken Hatoba is one of the best restaurants that serves Kobe steak in the city. They are family-owned and currently ranked number 2 out of 4,760 restaurants in Kobe by Trip Advisor . Meriken Hatoba has a seating capacity of around 10 people. Make sure to reserve ahead of time if you want to include this place in your itinerary.

Their menu is pretty straight forward. But it may change depending on the season and supply of beef. We ordered Kobe beef steak, taco rice, Chinese soup, plain rice and beef sashimi . By far, this is the most expensive meal we ever had as a family. But overall, we were satisfied by the quality of food we experienced here.

As for the service, it’s top-notch. The servers are friendly, especially the chef. Don’t forget to take pictures with them afterward.

Dessert at Est Royal – Motomachi.

There was a delicious smell after we left the restaurant. We’re stuffed, but we can’t resist the sweet aroma. We traced the scent and discovered Est Royal .

Est Royal is a western confectionery shop approximately 20 steps away from Meriken Hatoba . You won’t miss it because of its shocking pink color. They specialize in cream puffs, éclairs, mille-feuille, and crème brûlée. My wife went to the store, then came out with a box. Inside were four pastries:

• Choux a la crème
• Chou a la Sable Bagnille
• Panda shoes
• Crème brûlée

The smell hype didn’t disappoint. I love each one of them. But my favorite by far was the Choux a la crème . I hope you are not that concerned about calories… Because Est Royal is a gem you must add to your Osaka to Kobe travel plan .

Route to Mount Rokko: (Estimated travel time: 55 minutes)

The snow park was the reason we were going to Mount Rokko. Sadly, they announced that the park was closed for maintenance when we got there.

Rokkosan Snow Park features artificial snow and slopes. The place is perfect for kids to try skiing, sledding, and building a snowman. All necessary equipment is available for rent, so you don’t need to worry about bringing anything.

We planned to spend the rest of our day at the snow park. But since it was closed, we just let our feet decide our next destination. We eventually came across the Rokko Morinone Museum . “Museum” sounds educational and kid-friendly, so we didn’t hesitate to pay for the tickets.

Rokko Morinone Museum is likewise known as Rokko International Musical Box Museum . This thirty-year-old facility collects and displays vintage musical boxes and other mechanical instruments. They hold daily concerts, conduct musical box making workshops, and also sell ready-made musical boxes.

Honestly, I felt like backing out when I learned what this museum is all about. I’m not a musical person and do not wish to waste my time here. But the Rokko Morinone Museum is more than just a museum. It’s also a place of healing. They have a garden and a café where you can relax and connect with nature.

It’s been a tough year, so I was sold with the idea of “healing.” We stayed in the garden for an hour, savoring coffee, ice cream, pastries, Kobe burger steak, and tranquility.

Night tour at Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden.

It’s 5:17 PM. We don’t quite know where to go next, so we thought of going back to Osaka. Upon walking to the bus stop, we saw people going inside a nearby attraction wearing neon bracelets. Curious, we followed them and learned that a night tour at Alpine Botanical Garden is about to start. We inquired and were surprised that the tour was already included in the ticket we bought at the museum.

Based on research, the botanical garden gives visitors a view of Mt. Rokko’s native flora and Alpine-Himalayan flowers. It grows around 1,500 different kinds of plants, such as cold climate plants, alpine plants, and wildflowers from different places. Unfortunately we couldn’t see any of these because it’s already dark.

The point of the night tour , however, isn’t about the flora. It’s to showcase the light artworks and effects in the garden. We didn’t have a clue, but we are actually at an annual festival called Rokko Meets Art . This event usually happens from August to November. Check the dates before adding this event to your Osaka to Kobe day trip itinerary.

We got out of the garden by 5:51 PM and travelled back to Osaka.

Route from Mount Rokko to Hotel She, Osaka : (Estimated travel time: 2.5 hours)

Dinner at Ramen Bar Hanamichi.

We arrived at Ichioka bus stop at 9 PM. It was a long journey, and we’re starving. Most restaurants are already closed by this time, thus we only have a few options left. We planned on grabbing something at Family Mart until we saw this ramen place: Ramen Bar Hanamichi .

Ramen Bar Hanamichi also known as Mensho Hanamichi . It has a good ambience and friendly servers. Yet, everything boils down to whether they have good ramen or not. Well… the portion is great. But overall, 2.5 out of 5 stars. Not bad, but also not great. We were disappointed because food is one of the reasons we visited Japan . And we haven’t had any ramen that has impressed us so far.

Kobe is a vibrant city with a mix of modern attractions and historical sites to explore and it’s easy to do an Osaka to Kobe day trip as the cities are right next to each other.

If you’re in Kyoto it’s also easy to get to Kobe from there and this post would apply to that as well.

There are many more things to do in Kobe that aren’t listed here but that would be too much to do on an Osaka to Kobe day trip as you will only have one day in the city and you can’t cover them all.

If you have just one day to spend on an Osaka to Kobe day trip then these are the must-see and must-do activities.

Getting From Osaka To Kobe

To travel from Osaka to Kobe, you have several transportation options available.

Train : The most popular and convenient way to travel between Osaka and Kobe is by train. You can take the Japan Rail (JR) Special Rapid Service from Osaka Station to Sannomiya Station in Kobe.
