Holland America’s “ 22-Day South America & Antarctica Holiday ” promises 22 days of sights and experiences most people — no matter how well traveled — will ever see. A crossing of the Drake Passage, a visit to the Falkland Islands, and a trip to the Antarctic island that houses the largest known colony of gentoo penguins in the world.

It all begins in Buenos Aires before continuing to Montevideo and Punta del Este, Uruguay. From there, you’ll head south down the coast of Argentina until you hit the sandy beach town of Puerto Madryn, Argentina. After a day on the coast, the tour will continue to the remote Falkland Islands , which are known for their cliffed coastlines and resident king penguins.

Starting on Christmas Day, the Oosterdam is scheduled to cruise through the bays and islands of Antarctica, “the White Continent,” for four days. The ship will explore the Palmer Archipelago, Dallmann Bay, and Cuverville Island, which is home to the largest known colony of gentoo penguins in the world. Before departing Antarctica, the ship will visit Paradise Harbor, which will likely be the first time onboard guests will see other humans — in addition to more Gentoo and chinstrap penguins.

On the route back to South America, the ship will pass through the wild seas of Cape Horn and the Drake Passage. From there, the Oosterdam will pass through the impressive and treacherous waters of Glacier Alley, which stretches along a good portion of the 150-mile-long Beagle Channel.

On the first day of 2024, the ship will stop in Punta Arenas, Chile before passing through the Strait of Magellan and visiting the Amalia or El Brujo Glaciers. The trip concludes with several stops in Chile, including a visit to the Chilean Fjords, before docking in Santiago, Chile — the last stop of the 22-day journey.

The trip departs from Buenos Aires on Dec. 16 and ends in Santiago, Chile on Jan. 7, 2024. The entire 22-day experience starts at $1,699 a person and includes three meals a day. Additional perks include free access to the fitness center, casino, family game room, kid’s club, and live nightly music. For an additional charge, guests can book a treatment at the Greenhouse Spa & Salon, grab a drink at one of the ship’s bars, or enjoy an elevated meal at the onboard steakhouse or the Italian restaurant.

Antarctica via Fort Lauderdale: Holland America Line launches new pole-to-pole cruise

Traveling to Antarctica and above the Arctic Circle in one trip is easier than it sounds. Just g et yourself to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Holland America Line will do the rest.

The cruise line will offer a new 133-day Grand Voyage: Pole-to-Pole in 2025 round-trip from Florida, sailing to far-flung destinations from South to North and back again, Holland America said Thursday. 

"If we're going to go add, we can't just kind of pile on to the same things we've done," Beth Bodensteiner, the line's chief commercial officer, told USA TODAY. "We need to be unique and offer different experiences that people can't have elsewhere." 

The sailing will stop at 68 ports in 28 countries and cross paths with the line's 124-day Grand World   Voyage, marking the first time the line will sail two voyages of more than 120 days at once.

The trip will take place from January 25, 2025, through June 7 on the line's Volendam ship.

The cruise will stop in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic before making its way to Central America and the west coast of South America, visiting Ecuador, Peru and more, along with the Chilean fjords. The ship will then head to Antarctica, where it will spend about four days sailing. "And that's where we pick up our first Pole," Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president for deployment and itinerary planning, said.

Passengers will then visit the Falkland Islands and continue exploring South America, including the Amazon River, before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to visit Africa and Europe, where the ship will meet up with the Grand World Voyage in Barcelona, Spain and stay overnight with festivities to mark the occasion.

The rest of the itinerary will include Portugal, France, Norway's North Cape – above the Arctic Circle - Iceland, Greenland and more.

"I always like to say it's a way to get to these regions by only having to take a domestic flight because you just fly to Fort Lauderdale, and the world's at your doorstep," Grigsby said.

Volendam also has plenty to keep guests entertained while on board, with five pools and hot tubs, seven dining options, two pickleball courts and more.

Pricing info for the voyage is not yet available. Travelers can call 1-800-522-3399 or contact their travel advisor to make a deposited future cruise request, and get priority booking confirmation before the sailing officially goes on sale May 24, a spokesperson for the line said.

Guests who book by June 3, 2024, can get perks like a free Surf Wi-Fi package , air credit, onboard credit and more, though those may vary depending on the stateroom category.

Oh that is very good to know!  I'm on the Feb cruise.  

Be sure to bring sunglasses. When the sun is out (as it has been off and on) you will need them.

That's the plan.  Can't wait to board the Oosterdam on the 10th for our next adventure.

We are on the next cruise leaving from Santiago. Getting very excited.  I have been waiting on this one for several years now due to CoVid.

Now that it is becoming a reality, the wife is wanting to know what to pack. As you all know, the contrasts in temperatures are significant. What do people wear during the many sea days, especially around the Antarctic.  

As the interior of the ship is temperature controlled I am typically in a T shirt and jeans. Some folks dressed as though they are on an Antarctic expedition. Typical dress inside appears like any other cruise.

Outside temps have been between 34-42 degrees. Sun/overcast/even a few token snowflakes. During the 4 day Antarctic Experience we were putzing around at a slow speed so not too much wind chill.

For the short times I was out on the bow or the deck 7 bow walkway I have a wool cap, flannel shirt, windbreaker and gloves on. Of course conditions are subject to change for your cruise.

Thanks for the insight. Hope the sea's are not too rough as you cross Drakes Passage. Was Antarctica what you expected? 

Heading northwest to SA now. Sky is clear. Sea is rough. The Lido pool is like something from a wild waves water park. Both kids and adults in it are having a great time!

Antarctica is much more than I expected!

On the clothing front, if you plan on spending a lot of time out on deck, warm clothes are helpful.  It may or may not be windy.  There are lots of great view points inside, but the windows get significantly dirty and interfere with photography.

I think Antarctica exceed my expectations.   Beautiful scenery everywhere.  We saw a lot of whales, penguins and other sea birds.  If you have a camera with an interchangeable lens, bring the biggest zoom you can.  I wish I had more lens with me.

The seas are a bit rough right now.  The ship creaks a lot.  Winds are strong and in the Beaufort scale of 6 to 8.

We missed Port Stanley.  The winds were too high for tendering and a low pressure system was coming in and promised to make it worse.

Overall this has been a great trip.  Antarctica is simply stunning in its beauty.  I often stayed on the Seaview deck on 9 for taking pictures.  The bow can get a bit crowded and the captain wheels the ship around at anything important.  The trickiest thing has been trying to plan.  Where the ship can get to and when changes frequently due to the ice conditions.  Gets a little hard to know when you need to be  up or on deck.  Lots of photo opportunities.

Thanks for this refreshing review. We consider ourselves so lucky to be among the few who will get to experience the beauty of Antarctica. The excitement just keeps mounting cannot wait for Jan 11 to arrive.

We'll be on board taking this journey on Feb 2.  I have an unusual but  simple request, we are interested in which board games the ship has in its library area.   As we would rather not bring duplicates from home.  Love that you gave us good clothing suggestions and camera suggestions!  Have a safe and memorable journey!

It was somewhat rough.  We had 6 meter swells and winds upto 8 on the Beaufort scale.

Thanks to all on this current cruise for all the great info. We will be on the Jan 11th sailing. Question though, how was the embarkation process? Did anyone go on earlier than their assigned time? They assigned us a 4 PM boarding time but we'd like to get on earlier and wondered how HAL handles that?

I don’t think we can describe our boarding process in BA in any kind of relation to what normal would be. Remember we embarked the day they were doing the World Cup Parade in BA. The city and the port were simply insane.  I suspect that anything that happens in SA will be a welcome blissful experience compared to what we had. LOL

Holland America Line Set to Debut New ‘Glacier Day’ and Enhanced Alaska-Focused Experiences on Every Alaska Cruise in 2024

Seattle, Wash., April, 17, 2024 — Holland America Line is debuting “Glacier Day” on its Alaska cruises as it rolls out new programming within its "We Love Alaska” on board experience. The new offerings include Alaska Up Close presentations as well as culinary and beverage experiences to help foster a deeper connection to the people, history and culture of the state. The 2024 season kicks off April 27 from Vancouver and May 4 from Seattle. 

“Holland America Line continues to focus on bringing regional and local experiences on board every cruise, with our Alaska sailings leading the way in authentic programming, localized cuisine, and now special events like ‘Glacier Day’,” said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer of Holland America Line. “We continue to cultivate like-minded partnerships and fine-tune everything from cocktails to wildlife maps to ensure our guests are completely immersed in all facets of Alaska.”

Alaska Season Itineraries and Cruisetours

Through September 2024, guests can embark on Holland America Line’s Alaska cruises and Cruisetours from Vancouver and Seattle aboard Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam and Zaandam. In addition to seven-day itineraries, guests can take longer 14-day cruises and a new 28-day Arctic Circle Solstice Legendary Voyage that includes 12 Alaska ports.

Cruisetours range from nine to 18 days and include a one-, two- or three-day visit to Denali National Park. Select Cruisetours also include a journey into the wilds of Canada’s Yukon. Holland America Line remains the only cruise line that offers overland tours to the Yukon combined with an Alaska cruise and Denali experience.

‘Glacier Day’ Puts a Spotlight on Alaska’s Majestic Glaciers

As a leader in Alaska cruising, Holland America Line offers more glacier experiences than any other cruise line. The new Glacier Day includes sighting times, scenic commentary, presentations, informational viewing stations, photo opportunities, Dutch Pea Soup on deck, Glacier Ice cocktails, insightful talks by Glacier Bay National Park Rangers and Huna cultural interpreters, an open bow for viewing, and more.

Every Alaska cruise includes a visit to one or more of Alaska’s iconic glacier destinations: Glacier Bay National Park , Hubbard Glacier , Dawes Glacier , and the Twin Sawyer Glaciers of Tracy Arm . Shore excursions also offer the opportunity to visit additional glaciers, including Mendenhall and Portage glaciers.

Serving Fresh Fish in Alaska

Holland America continues to build on its groundbreaking Global Fresh Fish program, which includes being the only cruise line with Alaska seafood certified sustainable by the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) and bringing locally sourced fresh fish from port to plate in less than 48 hours. In addition to the seafood and other local delicacies served on the menus, ships in Alaska will serve three exclusive dishes created by the brand’s Fresh Fish Ambassador Chef Morimoto: Fresh Black Cod Yuzu, Morimoto Epice Lobster and Fresh Halibut XO.

A new Alaska Seafood Boil will be offered once per cruise in Lido Market for a surcharge. The foodie feast will serve Ivar’s Northwest-Style Clam Chowder, Dungeness Cruise Clusters, Alaska Salmon, Penn Cove Clams, Penn Cove Mussels and a Shrimp Bucket, with Triple Berry Crisp and vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Offered once per cruise, all dishes on the Alaska Brunch menu in the Dining Room were created with the influence of fresh, local Alaskan and Pacific Northwest ingredients. The selections range from sweet to savory and include Alaskan Blueberry Pancakes, Salmon & Potato Chowder, Wild Forest Mushroom and Tarragon Crepes, Kodiak Steak and Egg Skillet, Crab and Hot Smoked Salmon Cakes, Biscuits with Gravy and Alaskan Reindeer Sausage, and Home Smoked Gulf of Alaska Cod Benny.

Bartender Sam Ross Creates Alaska Cocktails

Acclaimed bartender Sam Ross created a menu of exclusive cocktails that will be featured in the bars on all Alaska ships: Juneau AK, Klondiker, PNW Penicillin, Mosquito, Midnight Sun and Frontier Champagne Flip. Ross was the 2011 “U.S. Bartender of the Year” and his flagship bar, Attaboy, won the 2022 award for “Best Bar in the U.S.” by The World’s 50 Best Bars. Ross is credited with creating two of the most famous modern classic cocktails: Penicillin and Paper Plane.

New Exclusive ‘Killer Whale Pale Ale’ Available On Board

Holland America Line is debuting a new “Killer Whale Pale Ale” on all Alaska cruises. The beer was produced in collaboration with Pike Brewing – Seattle’s oldest craft brewery – and features notes of honey, citrus and tropical fruits. The label artwork was created in collaboration with Native Artist Rico Worl , a member of the Tlingit and Athabascan community, who also designed the Native artwork featured on the Alaska menus. The Killer Whale Pale Ale label represents the food chain in the Pacific Northwest, with a seal deftly maneuvering out of the grasp of a killer whale.

More Wildlife Viewing than Any Other Cruise Line

Alaska is synonymous with stunning wilderness, and Holland America Line offers more ways to see wildlife in its natural habitat. Alaska ships carry an expert on board to help guests witness the majestic animals found in the region, and a Wildlife Spotting Guide points out the native animals found along the cruise route and includes a map with the best places to see each species. Ashore, Holland America Line offers nearly 180 shore excursions to see species of all kinds.

On Deck for a Cause Continues to Support Alaska’s Parks

Holland America Line will continue to donate proceeds from its “On Deck for a Cause” charitable event aboard ships in the region to Alaska Geographic , the nonprofit education partner of Alaska’s parks, forests, refuges and conservation lands. Called “On Deck for a Cause: Alaska’s Parks,” guests on all Alaska cruises will be invited to donate $25 to participate in a noncompetitive 5K fundraising walk aboard every sailing. Funds raised through “On Deck for a Cause: Alaska’s Parks” will go to support education, science and research in Alaska’s parks. The 2023 Alaska season raised more than $100,000 for Alaska Geographic.

Standby Program Offers Reduced Rates for Seattle and Vancouver Cruises

Guests with easy access to Seattle or Vancouver have an opportunity to cruise to Alaska at a reduced rate of $49 per person, per day with Holland America Line’s Standby program. Travelers who sign up for a cruise are alerted between seven and two days before departure if they will be sailing. Solo cruisers also only pay $49 per day and do not incur a single supplement for a double stateroom.

'Glacier Day' Puts a Spotlight on Alaska's Majestic Glaciers As a leader in Alaska cruising, Holland America Line offers more glacier  experiences than any other cruise line. The new Glacier Day includes sighting times, scenic commentary, presentations, informational viewing stations, photo opportunities, Dutch Pea Soup on deck, Glacier Ice cocktails, insightful talks by Glacier Bay National Park Rangers and Huna cultural interpreters, an open bow for viewing, and more.

Bartender Sam Ross Creates Alaska Cocktails Acclaimed bartender Sam Ross created a menu of exclusive cocktails that will be featured in the bars on all Alaska ships: Juneau AK , Klondiker, PNW Penicillin, Mosquito, Midnight Sun and Frontier Champagne Flip. Ross was the 2011 "U.S. Bartender of the Year" and his flagship bar, Attaboy, won the 2022 award for "Best Bar in the U.S." by The World's 50 Best Bars. Ross is credited with creating two of the most famous modern classic cocktails: Penicillin and Paper Plane.

New Exclusive 'Killer Whale Pale Ale' Available On Board Holland America Line is debuting a new "Killer Whale Pale Ale" on all Alaska cruises. The beer was produced in collaboration with Pike Brewing – Seattle's oldest craft brewery – and features notes of honey, citrus and tropical fruits. The label artwork was created in collaboration with Native Artist Rico Worl , a member of the Tlingit and Athabascan community, who also designed the Native artwork featured on the Alaska menus. The Killer Whale Pale Ale label represents the food chain in the Pacific Northwest, with a seal deftly maneuvering out of the grasp of a killer whale.

More Wildlife Viewing than Any Other Cruise Line Alaska is synonymous with stunning wilderness, and Holland America Line offers more ways to see wildlife  in its natural habitat. Standby Program Offers Reduced Rates for Seattle and Vancouver Cruises Guests with easy access to Seattle or Vancouver have an opportunity to cruise to Alaska at a reduced rate of $49 per person, per day with Holland America Line's Standby  program. Travelers who sign up for a cruise are alerted between seven and two days before departure if they will be sailing. Royal Caribbean stock sailed higher Thursday after the cruise operator beat earnings expectations and hiked full-year profit guidance. The cruise operator reported adjusted earnings of $1.77 a share, sailing better than analysts’ expectations of $1.33. “Demand for our leading brands and the incredible experiences they deliver continues to be very robust, resulting in outperformance in the first quarter, a further increase of full year earnings guidance, and 60% expected earnings growth year over year,” CEO Jason Liberty said.

Royal Caribbean lifts profit view again on cruise boom, higher prices

(Reuters) -Royal Caribbean Group on Thursday raised its annual profit forecast for a second time, after record bookings during the first quarter and higher ticket pricing boosted its results, sending its shares 4% higher premarket. Soaring demand for vacations at sea has given cruise operators ample room to raise ticket prices as the industry looks to close the pricing gap between more expensive land-based holidays and give their profits a lift. Royal Caribbean also beat expectations for quarterly profit and revenue, with half of its yield growth coming from higher ticket pricing.
