The story of Balkampet Yellamma Temple

According to the story, Renuka, Raja Renuka’s daughter, married Jamadagni, Satyawati’s son, and had five sons, one of whom was Parashurama. Renuka was unable to perform one of her regular household chores one day. Her husband, Jamadagni, became very angry and asked her to leave the house. Dejected Renuka was advised to perform pujas near a Shivalinga and feed Brahmins as penance by the saints. Jamadagni became even angrier about this, and he then ordered his five sons to punish her. All the sons except Parashurama refused and were burned to ashes by the father’s gaze, while Parashurama went in search of his mother, who was hiding in a village and beheaded her, as well as the poor woman who assisted her. Jamadagni, pleased with his son’s obedience, bestowed a boon upon him, and in return, Parashurama requested his father to return the lives of his brothers, mother, and the village woman. However, Renuka’s and the other woman’s heads and bodies were interchanged. While Jamadagni accepted the woman who had Renuka’s body, the other form with Renuka’s head became popularly known as Yellamma, which means “mother of all,” and has been religiously worshiped by Telangana people since then.

About Yellamma Temple Saundatti

Yellamma Temple, also known as Renuka Temple which is located in the city of Saundatti, Karnataka, India. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Renuka devi. The temple is situated on a hilltop known earlier as Siddhachal Parvat and now known as "Yellamma Gudda", named after the temple. The construction of the temple was done in the year 1514 by Bomappa Nayaka of Raybag. Based on the archaeological findings in the vicinity of the temple, it is evident that a temple stood at this location during either the early Rashtrakuta or late Chalukyan era, spanning from the mid-8th to the mid-11th centuries. The discovery of megalithic tombs in this area suggests an even earlier habitation. Furthermore, pottery fragments including early historic redware dating back to the 3rd century BCE to the 3rd century CE, alongside megalithic blackware and redware, have been observed on the hill.

One day, Renuka forgot to do one of her regular household duties and this angered Jamadugni. She was asked to flee and the saints advised Renuka as part of her penance to perform pujas for Shivalinga and feed few Brahmins.

Yet, Jamadugni remained extremely anger and ordered that his sons to punish their mother. All of the sons except Parshurama refused. Jamadugni burnt all his sons except Parshurama into ashes. Parushurama was in search for his mother with an axe who was hiding in a village. He beheaded her when he found her and also the poor woman who helped in hiding her was also beheaded by Parshurama.

Jamadugni was happy by his son’s obedience and granted him a blessing. Parushurama asked to bring back the lives of his mother, his brothers and the woman of the village.
