Trek From Sepi To Gorkhey via Ramam-Samanden

  • Altitude(Gorkhey):  7,500 ft.
  • Trek Distance:  14 km | 7-8 hrs.
  • Altitude gain: 1100 ft.
  • Lunch on the way.
  • Stay in Teahouse.

Wake up and lace up your trekking boots, today we are going to start our trek towards Sandakphu. Starting the day early, it's a  considerably easy walk to Ramam with a gradual ascent and some steep sections. Maintain a steady pace and rest for a few moments if needed. Ramam is approximately 3.5 km away from the Sepi campsite. The trail here is a constructed route for most parts and you will notice several cut fields and tiny dwellings on the way. Take a short break at Ramam if you need to and then we will head on towards Samanden.

As you move out of Ramam, the trail becomes more secluded with the huts disappearing and the forest trail starting to open up. Walking through the quiet forest with the sound of nature all around you is a great experience in itself. The Singalila Range is quite popular for its abundance of greenery and you can now feel the same. For about 6 km you will traverse through the forests until you arrive at a bridge.

After the bridge, it's a steep climb for 15 minutes or so, following which you will arrive at a zone where there are stone benches, each dedicated to locals who have passed away. The locals made these benches with the kind intention that those who have passed away can serve the passersby even after their death by providing them with a place to rest.

From this point on, the trail begins to ease out a bit for a few minutes post which you arrive at a clearing dotted with wooden huts and farmlands. This is the beautiful Samanden village. Samanden has a very picturesque setting and the locals here are very friendly. Chat up with the locals and hear their interesting stories and you will also be greeted with incredible hospitality. The simplicity and the tranquility of the place may take you by surprise.

A couple of kilometres more and you will arrive at the Gorkhey campsite. Gorkhey is a small village situated in the northern part of West Sikkim and is pretty close to the state border. Gorkhey is an ideal location to halt for the night before we continue on our Sandakphu trek.

Trek From Gorkhey To Phalut

  • Trek Distance  – 15 Km | 7-8 hrs.
  • Altitude Gain – 4000 ft.

Start your trek early in the morning from Gorkhey towards Phalut. It is about 15 km from Gorkhey. The beautiful Gorkhey Khola flows through the village of Gorkhey after which it is named. It is a tributary of the Ramam River. Crossing this picturesque setting we will head on towards Phalut.

You will again cover long sections of forested trails today, be prepared as you have to continue ascending for a long distance, and at some points, the ascent can be pretty steep. You may spot plenty of Oaks and Rhododendrons on the forested path. Maintain a steady pace along the trek.

It takes about 7-8 hrs to reach Phalut. Phalut is one of the highest peaks of the Singalila Range, it is the second-highest point after Sandakphu Ridge. To reach Gorkehy to Phalut, you also need to get permits, which can be acquired from the Gorkhey check post.

En route to Phalut, you will get to see the Singalila Range from up close and you will get to see a stunning view of the Kanchenjunga Massif as well. The closer you get to Phalut the more beautiful the landscape gets. At 11,500 ft Phalut offers stunning mountain views. Your stay is arranged in camps and after a delicious dinner, you will rest under the canopy of a million stars.  Keep in mind that Phalut does not have electricity and everything runs on the solar panel, so keep extra batteries and power banks with you for your gadgets.

The next day we will start our journey towards Thokum. If you didn’t know Thokum campsite is located in Nepal, so we will be skirting the Indo-Nepal border into Nepal. Thokum is a beautiful valley that falls on the way to Sandakphu between Sabargram and Sandakphu and has a very soothing and relaxing vibe with beautiful meadows and a picturesque setting.

En route to Thokum, you may spot some Yaks grazing in the meadows and you have crossed the Indo-Nepal border into Nepal. Although it is a remote and unknown location, the views here are stunning and extremely admirable. The route to Thakum is also lined with a thicket of Rhododendron trees.

Sleeping Buddha formation stays in the backdrop as you cross some abandoned huts and cattle grounds. From Thakum, several routes branch into Nepal. This is your campsite for the night. We will pitch our tents here and rest for the night.

From Thokam, you will have to take the route that branches into the southwest direction towards Aal. Aal is the closest campsite to Sandakphu summit and is set in a scenic location. A few kilometers ahead of Thokam lies the Aal campsite, which offers a very beautiful view of the Kanchenjunga Ranges and the adjacent peaks. Enjoy a hot lunch at the Aal campsite today and you have the evening to spend at your leisure exploring the area.

From Thokam it's about a 9-10 km walk to Aal. Follow the hiking trail and it will lead you to the Aal campsite. On a clear day, you can see stunning views of the Sleeping Buddha formation. You will be staying in tents in Aal and you can see beautiful Himalayan views from here. You are still in Nepal territory and as you move towards Sandakphu you will again move to Indian territory. The stretch from Aal to Timburey is about 14 km. As we start from Aal after 3km we will reach Sandakphu. We start early in the morning so that you can watch the sunrise from the top of Sandakphu. It is one of the prettiest sights we will ever see. The first rays of sun over the snow-capped sleeping buddha cover it in an alpenglow that is way too beautiful to be described in words.

After watching the sunrise at Sandakphu and spending some time at the summit we will head towards Timburey, our next campsite. From Sandakphu it is about 10km to Timburey and takes about 4-5 hours to complete. As you head towards Timburey, Gurdum is the first village that you will come across. In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:

While it is extremely rare for TTH to cancel a trek, we understand that unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters may occasionally require us to do so before the scheduled departure. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.

How to choose the right trek?

Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:

1. Determine fitness level:  Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.

2. Choose a well-traveled trail:  A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.

3. Consider the length of the trek:  For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.

4. Look for gradual elevation gain:  Choose a trek with a gradual elevation gain rather than steep ascents. This will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.

5. Check the weather:  Check the weather forecast before selecting a trek. Avoid treks during the monsoon season or winter when the trails can be slippery or dangerous.

6. Research the trail:  Read about the trail to get an idea of the terrain, altitude, and difficulty level. This will help you select a trek that is suitable for the beginner.

7. Consult with an expert:  If you are unsure about which trek to choose, consult our trek expert Mr. Nitin (+91 70600 59773) between 10 AM to 6 PM (Tuesday - Friday). Mr. Nitin will provide you valuable advice and guidance.

Overall, it is important to choose a trek that is enjoyable, challenging but not too difficult, and suitable for the beginner's fitness level and experience.

Can a beginner choose a tough trek?

It is not recommended for a beginner to choose a difficult Himalayan trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally challenging, especially if you are not used to the high altitude, steep slopes, and rugged terrain. Choosing a difficult trek without the proper experience, fitness level, and preparation can be dangerous and put you at risk of altitude sickness, injury, and other hazards.

If you are a beginner, it is recommended to start with an easier trek and gradually build up your skills and experience. This will help you understand the challenges of trekking in the Himalayas, and also prepare you physically and mentally for a more difficult trek in the future. It is also important to choose a trek that matches your fitness level, experience, and interest.

There is no specific age limit for a beginner trekker. However, it is important to consider your physical fitness, health condition, and personal interests before embarking on a trek. How do I manage the negative temperatures on the trek at higher camps? Do I need special jackets?

Layer Up From Head To Toe Eat Full Meals, never sleep empty stomach You can keep warmee (if you’re more susceptible to cold). Use sleeping bag in right way and don’t leave free space in sleeping bag.

For upper body – Thermal layer – T-shirt (full-sleeves) – Fleece T-shirt (for extreme colds) – Fleece layer – Thick Jacket/Down Jacket – Waterproof or Windproof layer (outermost layer, when it is snowing or raining) - For Lower Body – Thermal layer – Hiking pants (normal) or Winter hiking pants

Based on how warm you feel you can skip any of the above layers. Your outer later should be windproof since it is windy at high altitude. The idea behind layering is that the more insulation you have the less cold you feel, and instead of wearing a very thick jacket if you wear multiple layers, your body will be better insulated against the cold.

Key Geographical Highlights

Daywise itinerary for phoktey dara trek, ▼day 1 arrival day uttarey 2020m.

Upon arriving in Bagdogra airport or NJP railway station, our team receives you and then we get on the drive to reach a beautiful hamlet of West Sikkim - Uttarey. In Uttarey, we arrange for your accommodation in a beautiful homestay. We welcome the team with light snacks and easy check-in. Staying in the homestay gives us an opportunity to know and experience the rich local culture and cuisine. Our trekking team meets you in Uttarey and checks your preparation for the trek we start tomorrow. The guides brief the team and we end up the day with a hot tasty dinner and call it a night in a warm cozy bed.

▼Day 2 Trekking Day Acchaley 2850m

Today we wake up to a wonderful morning in the beautiful village homestay in Uttarey. The fresh blowing wind and a cool bright day will definitely energize you to take on the day. After breakfast, we start our trek. The route for the day winds up through the dense forest towards Acchaley. It's an easy trek today to start our long journey toward Phoktey Dara and Phalut. We pass by deep forest giving us ample opportunity for wildlife sightings.

▼Day 3 Trekking Day Kalijhar 3450m

Second day into the trek and the route slowly shifts gears upwards. The trail is beautiful with occasional openings in the middle of dense forest. Nature and wildlife will be at their best today. The route might be smaller but steep.

▼Day 4 Exploration Day Kalijhar 3450m

Today is a complete rest day and we live our day to the fullest. Early morning we wake up to witness the magical sunrise from the top of Phoktey Dara. It takes about 40 minutes to reach the Phoktey Dara top and the view of the Sleeping Buddha is considered the best from Phoktey Dara. Sleeping Buddha formation is all about the angle you see it from and Phoktey Dara presents the best angle to realize the Sleeping Buddha formation. The entire day is in our hands and we spend it wisely to our heart's contentment. We are right in the middle of a dense forest with abundant wildlife. Since it's a very less-done trail, sighting wildlife is very much possible if you maintain proper forest decorum.

▼Day 5 Pass Crossing Day Phalut 3600m

Today will be a long day and tiring day as we negotiate the Singalila Pass to enter Toriphuley and the beautiful pasture land of Phalut in West Bengal. The day's trek will involve a lot of climbing, descending, and then again climbing up to Phalut. The views throughout are amazingly beautiful and will keep you motivated throughout the trek with its charm. Sleeping Buddha is visible much closer and uninterrupted unless clouds decide to play a hide and seek game with you. Be prepared mentally for today and plan your water and food efficiently.

▼Day 6 Trekking Day Gorkhey 2286m

Phalut is an excellent place to stay the sunrise views from Phalut is just mesmerizing. It's just 10 minute's walk away from the trekker's hut. We wake up early morning to enjoy the magical sunrise view from Phalut Top. After spending good time for the sunrise, we come down back to the trekker's hut, have our breakfast, and leave for Gorkhey

Today's trek towards Gorkhey is a very easy one and should take about 3 hours with an average walking speed. It is a complete descend route and gets steeper in a few sections. The route passes through dense jungle and is very beautiful and joyful. Many wild plant species can be found here. Often we will come across openings in the dense forest which makes a good resting spot for some conversations and snacking or water breaks.

Gorkhey is a very beautiful village surrounded all around by mountains and forests. We spend our night here in a cozy homestay. It's time for a hot shower. Gorkhey also has a stream flowing around with lots of bird-sighting to be done.

▼Day 7 Departure Day Bagdogra 250m

Today our trek ends. The trek is very simple as well. Initially, we have a little climbing to do for the first 15 minutes after which the route gets gentle upon reaching Samanden village. Samanden is a beautiful village where we spend some time for photographs. It's like a tabletop in the mountains. After Samanden the route climbs gently for a while with occasional ascends and descends until it reaches Rammam. Rammam is a small village on the way and from here we can get a glance at the roadhead in Srikhola. From Rammam, Sepi takes any time between 1.5 to 2 hours to reach. We break for lunch in Sepi.

After lunch in Sepi, we head towards Siliguri / Bagdogra/ Darjeeling as planned before the trek. A beautiful journey comes to an end with a promise for even better memories on next journey.

The Phoktey Dara - Singalila Pass Trek is one of the best in the Northeast and Sikkim. It's an easy trek that can be done even by beginners. Compared to other treks in the Himalayas, it is very uncrowded and one of the least-done treks in India. This trek boasts the rich cultural experience of Sikkim, Darjeeling, and Nepal in one go. On the other hand, this trek also offers the view of 4 out of 5 highest peaks in the World, which are - Mt. Everest ( 8850m, 1st), Kanchenjunga ( 8586m, 3rd), Mt. Lhotse (8516m, 4th) and Makalu (8481m, 5th). Apart from Sandakphu - Phalut trek, this is the only trek that boasts of this grand panoramic view including Mt. Everest and Kanchenjunga together in a single view.

The trail that starts from Uttarey, in the circumference of the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, swirls up through the dense canopy of forest and beautiful openings amidst it creating some beautiful campsites. It is abundant in wildlife and vivid flora. During the springs, many species of rhododendrons and other wildflowers color up the trail. There are many varieties of birds that dwell in this National Park which makes it a bird-watcher's delight. The distinctively remote trail is lit up by the energy and happy-mindedness of the locals, some of whom accompany us on the trek as our support staff. You also witness the mixture of Tibetan, Nepali, Sikkimese, Subba, and Lepcha cultures in this entire trek route in form of its people, their way of living, and architecture.

In short, this is one of the best treks to be done in the Eastern Himalayas.

 Phoktey Dara Trek highlights

Phoktey Dara Trek - Why Its A Must-Do

  • The Phoktey Dara trek boasts the best views of the Sleeping Buddha formation, which is formed by Mount Kanchenjunga and 16 other popular peaks aligned in such a way that it appears like a giant Lord Buddha sleeping over the clouds.
  • The Phoktey Dara trek also provides the rare opportunity to view 4 of Worlds highest 8000-meter peaks together in a single frame. The peaks are  Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Lhotse, and Mt. Kanchenjunga which are the top 5 highest mountains in the World except for K2, which lies in the Karakoram range.
  • Not just this. The Phoktey Dara trek offers the panorama of more than 26 peaks of Bhutan, Sikkim, and Nepal. Chomolhari, Narsing, Jupono, Tenchenkhang, Pandim, Simvo, Goecha Peak, Forked Peak, Kanchenjunga, Kumbhakarna, Frey, Rathong, Koktang, South Kabru, North Kabru, 3 sister peaks, Everest, Makalu, Chamling, Chomolonzo, Lhotse, Nuptse, Baruntse, Macchapucchare, etc
  • The Phoktey Dara trek goes through the dense jungle of rhododendrons, magnolias, and many other wildflowers, some of which are only to be found in these mountain ranges of the Himalayas. Rhododendrons and magnolias bloom from late March to early May and the entire route is mystified by their color and fragrance.
  • The Phoktey Dara trek is home to numerous species of wild birds and a lot of wild animals. Since this trek is less frequented by human beings, it makes one of the ideal treks to sight wildlife.
  • Watch out for the glorious, dramatic, and magnificent sunrises and sunsets on the Phoktey Dara trek.
  • The Phoktey Dara trek offers a great opportunity to experience the hospitality of some of the most welcoming and loved tribes in the Himalayas. They are namely the Lepchas, Sherpas, Bhutias, Limboos, and other Sikkimese and Nepali people. They have a rich culture and their deep connection and love with mother Nature is something to be inspired from.
  • The Singalila Pass - Phoktey Dara trek is a borderline trek that swings between India and Nepal multiple times. It's altogether a different experience to trek on this ridgeline which divides different states in India and Nepal. The villages that come on the way are very beautiful.
  • Crossing over from Sikkim to West Bengal via the Singalila pass

  • Sandakphu Phalut Trek and Phoktey Dara trek boasts similar views. However, the major difference lies in the fact while Sandakphu Phalut is a homestay trek, Phoktey Dara on the other hand is a mix of camping and homestay trek. 3 of the 6 nights on the Phoktey Dara trek are full of camping in the natural environment right in the middle of the forest surrounded by the tall mountains of Sikkim and Nepal.
  • While you can still camp on the Sandakphu Phalut trek, the ambiance is spoilt by neighboring homestays and occasional landrover driving beside the camps. Phoktey Dara trek offers a pure camping experience.
  • If homestays and tea-houses are one of the plus factors of the Sandakphu trek, the Phoktey Dara trek too boasts of it for 3 nights. Hence you get to experience both of them.
  • While the Sandakphu Phalut trek is a borderline ridge trek and 3 nights on it are spent in Nepal and the remaining 3 in West Bengal, the Phoktey Dara trek touches the border but all the accommodations are in Sikkim and West Bengal. Though we mention this point as a difference, I must also say that Mother Nature does not understand borders. That's only for humans.
  • Sandakphu trek being a tea-house trek is cheaper compared to the Phoktey Dara trek which is a camping trek and also involves resources from 2 points. Guides/Cooks/Helpers and Horses hired from Uttarey need to be paid for their return journey without utilizing their service while we proceed towards Phalut with another guide and other resources from this region.

Darjeeling Gorkhey Timburey Home Stay Trek

  • Duration 6 Days
  • Destination India
  • Difficulty Level Easy
  • Max Altitude 2438mt

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the village lifestyle. Time moves slower, and there is no rush to be anywhere. The anxieties and worries that you carry with you will disappear each day on the trail. Realize that the trivial problems of everyday life are quite small in the grand scheme of your lifetime. You will become present on the trail and feel a sense of inner peace. By the end of the Homestay Trek in Darjeeling (Village to Village), you might just want to stay!

Before the homestay trek begins, we have a full day of cultural exploration in Darjeeling. There is so much to see in Darjeeling, that one day simply is not enough, but we see as much as we can. Check out the Toy Train, an UNESCO World Heritage site . Also, one cannot leave Darjeeling without tasting its famous tea from one of the many tea plantations. After sipping an energizing cup of tea, it’s time to check out some of the elaborate monasteries and temples in the city.

The following day, we leave for the trek. Traverse through hills and forests, staying in village upon village. Each night you will stay in a rural accommodation. The facilities are simple, yet comfortable and home-like. Eat the local cuisine, which is often more hygienic and organic than food in the cities. Learn how to make some of the foods in the process! Experience the peaceful environment and lovely Nepalese and Sikkamese hospitality. Learn about their history, culture, customs, food, and festivals while staying with them. In fact, if you would like to schedule your trek during one of the exciting festivals, we can arrange for that! Just let us know. You can read books about these local ethnic groups, but to actually live with them is a much more authentic experience. The connections you make will last a lifetime!

Few treks connect you this well with the local people, facilitating a learning experience between both groups. It is truly a once in a lifetime experience. The snapshots of the natural landscapes and wildlife will be remembered, but it is the genuine moments that you share with the Sherpa, Rai, Tamang, Dukpa people that are most cherished.

  • Wonderful opportunity to explore the local culture.
  • Visit Darjeeling  Zoo, one of the best zoos in the world to receive the prestigious International award "The Earth Heroes" 2014 out of over 300 zoos worldwide.
  • Experience the popular UNESCO heritage Toy Train Joyride in Darjeeling.
  • Homestay with a local family in a traditional village.
  • Experience our local culture and tradition.
  • View of beautiful terrace fields during your hike.
  • Rivers, springs and waterfalls along the hike.
  • Trek to neighboring hilltop villages.

Michael heather yoder, united states - june 14, 2024.

Our family of 5 just completed the 4 day Sandakphu trek. Subash was very accommodating and helped us find the trek that best fit our traveling schedule. He communicated well and assisted with logistics in lodging and transportation beyond just the trek. He met with us ahead of time to carefully go over the schedule and give us tips on how to best prepare, including foods to avoid, things to take along, etc. Our guide, Pemba, was very friendly and made sure we had what we needed. He never seemed impatient when we asked hundreds of questions or stopped to take innumerable pictures. He took great care of us and was fun to be around. Our hosts were friendly and knew what foreigners preferences were. The authentic, local cuisine was a highlight. If Pemba knew we especially liked a certain dish he made sure to ask for it again. Overall it was a great experience and we definitely would recommend Ashmita Trek & Tours!

Andrew Otis, Sri Lanka - August 28, 2018

We did a trek of different villages in the shadow of Sandakphu in the Singalila Forest - a 4 night, 5 day journey starting in Mane Bhanjang and ending in the forests near Rammam. Our guide, Pemba, was a gracious host and always willing to answer our questions. Highlights of the trek included learning how to cook momos, and especially the parts of the trek that were deep in the forest, away from people. From start to finish Ashmita Trek and Tours delivered, and delivered well.

My friend and me went on a four and a half day Village trekking tour with Ashmita Trek Darjeeling and it was really the experience and trip we hoped for! Our guide Tshering and the organizer Subash the Owner made this trip really easy going for us, by providing excellent information about the area, organizing comfortable guest houses and pik-up services and really caring about our satisfaction.  I recommend Ashmita Trek and Tours to everyone seeking an uncomplicated and good service when trekking in Darjeeling or Sikkim. Grade: A***

John L, Australia - May 10, 2015

Our small family group stayed in Darjeeling for sightseeing and visiting nearby locations significant to our past family history in the area.the proprietor Subash was amazing. He arranged everything we needed, and met with us frequently to ensure that the customised activities and day trips went perfectly. All of the drivers and vehicles he arranged were excellent. There was a severe storm on our first night in Darjeeling which severely disrupted power supplies and communications, but Subash ensured that our stay was perfect despite these obstacles. We highly recommend Ashmita Trek and Tours.

Beecoy, United Kingdom - March 27, 2015

We did the Sandakphu trail and loved it. Our guide was great and everything was planned out. The homestays we stayed at were wonderful people and the accommodations were very clean. Definitely a cultural experience. I want to use this tour company again in the future.  They are also very accommodating. We had planned for a five day trek but the day before my friend had an allergic reaction and Subash worked out a 3 day trail we could do and still make it to the top!

You must be wondering what is Barsey Gorkhey hiking? The gentle walk from Hilley to Barsey and also from Bhareng to Gorkhey inside pristine jungle is probably one of the finest in Sikkim. More than 250 cm of rainfall and above 2000 m of altitude makes the prevailing climate of this area wet and cold and hence proved ideal for it’s dominant floral genus Rhododendron to grow rapidly and diversify. April and May are the best months to visit this place if Rhododendrons, a lots of them, fascinates you. With the onset of spring Rhododendrons start blooming all around the terrain and stays till mid May, till monsoon takes over.

If you are in luck, Mt. Kanchenjunga is also visible from Barsey Guras Kunj (trekkers hut in Barsey) in the early morning. In the dense forest of Pine, Oak, Rhododendrons, you surely wish to get lost into the nature to find your soul, while you trek to this sanctuary. Also with great hospitality of locals, local food will make you feel like home while you will be staying in these villages of Okhrey & Gorkhey. So, now it’s time for you to get out of your comfort zone, spent quality time with nature and explore the less explored Barsey Gorkhey hike and be a #Banzara.

Sandakphu and Phalut Trek on Singalila Ridge:

The Sandakphu and Phalut trek, or the shorter Sandakphu trek , is a must to do trek for people looking to explore Darjeeling or Sikkim hills with breathtaking panoramas of Himalayan peaks. Our given itinerary follows the Singalila Ridge from South to North. For this reason, this trek is also called the “ Singalila Ridge Trek” .

sandakphu-phalut-a-himalayan-panoramic-route

About our trail:

Our trail reaches its highest point, Sandakphu, at ~ 3636 m/11926 ft. This is the highest point in West Bengal, in the district of Darjeeling. Phalut is another tabletop on the same ridge that is further north of Sandakphu, almost at the same height of ~ 3620 m. Due to its northerly position, i.e., its proximity to the high mountains, Phalut offers somewhat closer mountain views of the Sikkim and Nepal Himalayas.

One of the finest ridge trek in the Himalayas – Mesmerising sunrise and sunset views

As already said, the trail follows the famous Singalila Ridge, a prominent spur that runs southward from the Kanchenjunga massif. This ridge is the border between India and Nepal in the Eastern Himalayas. The east side of the ridge is India, and Nepal is on the west side. Although not as interior as some of the Sikkim treks that we arrange, this trail is still among one of the most scenically rewarding in the Indian Himalayas.

Below is a satellite map image showing an aerial view of the Singalila Ridge. You can easily see how open the vista is when you are walking along the ridge.

hiking-trail-on-singalila-ridge

You will get spectacular panoramic views of Nepal Himalayas including Kanchendzongha range, Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, Janu, Chamlang, Baruntse and a host of Sikkim peaks all seen in one stretch. You may absorb the serene “Sleeping Buddha” formation from multiple vantage points following our trail.

Trekking inside the Singalila National Park – the forests of Eastern Himalayas:

The Singalila National park area has rare species like Red Panda and is a birder’s paradise. Flowering of Rhododendrons and Magnolia turn the forest with red, pink and white shades during spring and foliage hue during autumn-fall.

Suggested Sandakphu & Phalut trek Itinerary 2023:

Our route follows the Singalila Ridge, which is the border of India and Nepal. Due to stay restrictions, non-Indians, i.e., foreigners, can’t stay in Nepal homestays or tea houses anymore like the Indians do. So the Indians and foreigners will have different itineraries.

Day 1: Drive from NJP railway station or Bagdogra airport to Chitrey   (~ 2200 m, 7200 ft) – 90 Km – 4 to 5 hours. Shared homestay accommodation. Foreigners can’t stay here, but 3 Km down at Maneybhanjung  (~ 1980 m/6500 ft). Day 2: Trek to Tumling (~ 2900 m/9500 ft) – 9 Km via Meghma ;– 5 to 6 hours. (Foreigners need to stay inside West Bengal, India at Tonglu GTA Trekkers Hut , shared dormitories ~ 3050 m/10000 ft.) Day 3: Trek down to Gairibas (~ 2570 m/8430 ft) and up to  Kalapokhri (~ 3100 m/10200 ft) – 12 Km – 6 to 7 hours. As there is no accommodation in this area inside India, foreigners need to trek directly to Sandakphu (6 Km further ahead) or else stay back at Gairibas GTA Trekkers Hut . Day 4: Trek to Sandakphu (~ 3636 m/11930 ft) – 6 Km – 3 to 4 hours. Stay in a lodge/hotel/trekkers hut, etc. (For foreigners accommodation is at Sandakphu GTA Trekkers Hut ) Day 5: Sandakphu to Phalut – 21 Km – 8 to 9 hours at a moderate pace. Accommodation at GTA Trekkers Hut (shared dormitories) for ALL. Day 6: Wake up early and hike (~ 15/20 mins) to Phalut Top   for the sunrise views. – After breakfast, trek down to Gorkhey – 15 Km – 4 to 5 hours. Lodge or a homestay accommodation. Day 7: Trek to Srikhola bridge via Ramam – 12 Km – 5 hours; Drive to NJP or Bagdogra – 150 km – 6 hours or transfer to Darjeeling – 90 Km – 4 hours, etc.

Important notes regarding the itinerary:

Infograhics on Singalila Ridge trek:

From the below image you will get a general idea about the Singalila Ridge trek in Darjeeling that includes different variants and possibilities.  Note that foreigners/non Indians must stay within India.

singalila-ridge-infographics-trail-accommodation-in-india-nepal

Foreigners, i.e., non-Indians, must walk and nightstay on the Indian side of Singalila Ridge:

This is a teahouse-style trek that follows the famous Singalila Ridge, forming the border between Darjeeling (West Bengal) in India and Nepal. As a matter of fact, you can get better facilities and services in terms of accommodation, food, comfort, etc. on the Nepal side (homestay, lodge, and hotel).

Whereas on the Indian side, the area falls inside Singalila National Park and is a restricted area. Only basic government-made trekker huts are there along the trek route for accommodation at night. You will have more options for homestays and lodges once you are outside the core area.

Starting in December 2021, Indian authorities are not allowing foreigners/non Indian passport holders to stay in Nepal while walking on the Singalila Ridge. So for foreign nationals, the accommodation options are GTA-operated government huts within Singalila National Park. This is enforced on the spot by the Indian paramilitary personnel stationed at various checkpoints along the trail on the India-Nepal border.

You can’t stay inside Nepal, even if you have a Nepal visa. This is due to the fact that there are no “ passport control ” offices between India and Nepal along the trail.

So it is mandatory for foreigners to stay inside India and make a night halt at the GTA/Govt. Trekkers Hut while trekking inside Singalila National Park.

On the other hand, for Indian citizens, we arrange stays in Nepal teahouses, wherever possible, and their itinerary will be different than that of foreigners.

What are the accommodations during Sandakphu Phalut trek:

This is a “Tea House” trek, i.e we don’t camp inside Singalila National Park but stay in Homestay/Lodge available on the trail. As you should expect on a mountain trail, these are basic accommodation run by the local Nepali/Tibetan families. Rooms are dormitory bed type with triple/quad sharing or more. Beds and blankets are neat and clean. Don’t expect an attached toilet or running hot water anywhere.

Do we camp and stay in a tent?

No we don’t. As a matter of fact, none is supposed to camp within the boundary of Singalila National park. This trail inside national park is designed for years to run a Tea House mode trek, same as its neighbouring Nepal treks. If you prefer a pristine full camping trek, we do have more legitimate options for you. These treks lie further north to Phalut on the Singalila ridge inside Sikkim and  offer closer views of Sleeping Buddha and high mountains of Nepal and Sikkim.  Our less crowded  Phoktey Dara or Singalila Pass Phalut   trek will surely entice you for great camping experiences.

Regarding GTA/Foreigners accommodation on

Phalut has only one accommodation option. The Trekkers Hut is operated by GTA (Gorkha Territorial Administration), an govt. administrative body in the Darjeeling Hills. This can’t be booked online neither you can check availability unless you drop in to their office, either at Gorkha Bhavan, Saltlake Kolkata (near City Centre, Salt Lake) or Darjeeling, Silver Fir building office. More over it has a maximum capacity of 20 beds, and they keep few on hold for guides/porters/staff accompanying trekkers. There is NO private accommodation/lodge at Phalut or vicinity. Due to heavy demand mostly this is full in the season.

Is this trek suitable for the beginners?

Also we have noticed that beginners/first time trekkers are often finding it pretty difficult to cover the 21 Km trail from Sandakphu to Phalut. So considering both we either keep you at Phalut Trekkers Hut or at Sabarkum/Molley, a place 14 Km from Sandakphu on the way to Phalut. This is decided case to case as per each individual group. However the itinerary remains same and you reach Gorkhey via Phalut in case the accommodation is at Sabarkum/Molley.

Alternate shorter and easy Tour – Sandakphu trek:

Though the trail ahead of Sandakphu is Easy considering the terrain, but adding Phalut involves total 6 days of trek covering around 80 Km. Often it can be strenuous if not prepared well. Also beginners as well as experienced trekkers can find it exhausting to reach Phalut, 21 Km from Sandakphu in a day.

However we have started arranging a smaller version of this trail omitting Phalut from the itinerary. This is the shortened version of Singalila ridge trek and called “ Sandakphu Trek ” . The wonderful walk along the ridge is ideal for the beginners/first timers, who want to explore Darjeeling/Sikkim Himalayas. This essentially retains almost all the flavour that the Sandakphu and Phalut produces, certainly the not scenic walk to Phalut! However this is not a showstopper considering the trail is same (initial 3 days of trek) till Sandakphu. Sleeping Buddha, Famous trio (Everest Lhotse, Makalu), and numerous Sikkim and Nepal high Himalayan ranges can be observed.  The descent from Sandakphu to the beautiful village of Gurdum is similar in beauty that of  Phalut to Gorkhey trail. Finally the Sandakphu trek also ends at Srikhola same as the longer duration Phalut trail. Advantage of Sandakphu trek is this trail requires 4 days of trekking and can be done year long apart from the monsoon (June to September). The walk is not strenuous like Phalut and covers around 40 Km in 4 days which is indeed an Easy grade trek and can be completed comfortably by anyone who has got basic physical fitness and will to walk.

We strongly advice to check our “Sandakphu Trek” itinerary, who want a shorter and easier version of this trail without losing much.

A note on the motor route from Maneybhanjung to Sandakphu and Phalut and its impact:

Access to sandakphu phalut trek base (chitrey or maney bhanjung):.

We may arrange a pickup by a private vehicle from NJP railway station/Bagdogra airport/Siliguri city to our usual trek basecamp, Chitrey, if you require so. Similarly, we can arrange a drop from the trek’s end point Srikhola, to NJP/Siliguri.

You pay directly to the driver, sharing equally with your other team members; this is NOT included in the listed TREK FEE. The cost is as per the following by a Tata Sumo type of car:

NJP/Bagdogra/Siliguri to Chitrey: ₹ 4500 (plus ₹ 500 forest toll) NJP/Bagdogra/Siliguri to Maneybhanjung: ₹ 4000 Darjeeling to Maneybhajung: ₹ 2000 Srikhola to NJP/Bagdogra/Siliguri: ₹ 7000 Srikhola to Darjeeling: ₹ 4500

siliguri-njp-bagdogra-to-sandakphu-phalut-trek-base-camp-road-route-map

We will arrange a pickup  from NJP/Bagdogra/Siliguri to Chitrey and drop from Srikhola to NJP/Bagdogra. This will be shared by the team members on actual basis and paid directly to the driver. Typically a Tata Sumo/Mahindra Maxx charges Rs 3500 for a drop to Chitrey and Rs 5000 from Srikhola to NJP/Bagdogra. One such car can accommodate 6 to 8 people.  This is NOT included in the TREK FEE and to be payable directly to the driver/owner.

If you wish to reach our Trek Base Chitrey on your own by public transportation:

Reaching Chitrey without a reserved vehicle will require some local road knowledge and changing of vehicles. Return from Srikhola is much easier as there are direct shared service to Siliguri and Darjeeling.

  • From NJP railway station take a shared jeep for Darjeeling and get down at Ghoom railway station. You can get one such shared jeep from Tenzing Norgay Bus terminus/Junction area in Siliguri also. From Ghoom take one shared service for Sukhiapokhri which is 12 Km. Change from here to Maneybhanjang, 7 Km away. Our trek base Chitrey is 3 Km up on the Sandakphu road. You are supposed to reach our Homestay at Chitrey on your own. You may get one vehicle to hire from Maneybhanjang to Chitrey (for Rs 400/500) but that depends on time and on driver’s will.
  • From NJP/Bagdogra reach Darjeeling Mor (crossing/chowk in Siliguri on the way to Darjeeling) on Hill Cart Road. From here you get shared services for Sukhiapokhri. From Sukhia you can reach Chitrey as mentioned earlier. Be sure that you have enough time as you may have to wait long for your turn. Sometime you may get a direct Maneybhanjung service (essentially the cars returning to Srikhola) in around noon/early afternoon.
  • While returning things are much easier. There are morning shared services from Srikhola to Siliguri and Darjeeling. For Srikhola there are two vehicles early in the morning at 5:30 am to SIliguri. It takes 6/7 hours to reach Darjeeling Mor in Siliguri (Rs 400 per seat). From here take an auto rickshaw to NJP/Bagdogra.
  • From Srikhola you get shared services for Darjeeling city. Early morning vehicles start between 6 and 7 am. Then you get jeeps between 10 and 11 am. It takes around 4 hours to Darjeeling (Rs 200 per seat).

We booked a 7D6N trek to Sandakphu & Phalut, and a driver for the following days to take us to Sikkim. The communication in advance was clear and swift. We had a great guide (Amar) and driver. We can recommend booking your trek through Himalaya Trekkers, but be aware of the more than basic conditions in the GTA huts run by the government, which are mandatory accommodation for foreigners.

Good vibes only

Done the Poon Hill trek with the help of Min and Tn. They were of great help just everytime and they had the solution for everything. Also, Min had a great knowledge that helped the three of us learning more about Nepal during the days we spent together. Really nothing bad to say. I just thank them as we could really enjoy the trek, which is just great. Nepal Mountain Trekkers owner, Ramesh, also helped us planning our days and organized for us other activities. Ask him for assistance if you need some. Just a note: don’t go to Chitwan to ride elephants and make sure to pick a good place over there, ours was terrible. A big thank again to Ramesh, Min and Tn!

You can definitely count on them for a hassel free trip

Did a 10 days trip, trek for 7 days ( poonhill, ghorepani , ghandruk circuit) with 5 kids and 3 mummies.Mr Ramesh ( the owner) is very accommodating and welcoming. He specifically assigned Min ,who is very patient , knowledgeable and experienced in handling family with young children. He has managed to handle the hiccups faced and unforseen circumstances well, not forgetting going all way out to arrange a freshly baked birthday cake for our boy in Ghorepani. We have enjoyed trekking with the awesome team comprising Mr Min, Mr Krishna,Mr Sangame,Mr Manish and Mr Bikash, who constantly ensured our safety and welfare. We are glad we made the right choice in engaging their service.Thumbs up!

Worry free 7 days trek to poon hill.

3 City Moms made it to Poon Hill with 5 young kids ranging from 5-13 years old. All made possible with a great team of guide and porters. The group dynamics were just right. They were able to bond well with the children and there was great team work amongst the team. We had nothing to worry about. From the moment we landed til we depart. Everything was well-thought. Even to the slightest details like planning a surprise cake [in the middle of the a mountain] for a boy who turned 13 during the trip and even making sure that we do not leave our belongings behind when we leave a tea house. These are the fine touches that made a trip an unforgettable one.

Dream trekking with superstar guide

Corinne-op-reis, good for new trekkers.

Being a beginner trekker, I found Mountain Trekkers good as everything was planned out ahead of time so all that was required of me was to walk. Ramesh was very knowledgeable and helped choose an appropriate hiking route that suited me. My guide was helpful and attentive. I recommend Nepal Mountain Trekkers to first time trekkers as it’s a nice introduction to the trekking world.

Amazing Adventure to Poon Hill and Ghorepani

My friend and I had an incredible time on an 8 day trek to Poon Hill and Ghorepani. This being my first trek, I was nervous about how I would go but Ramesh did an excellent job answering all of my questions and planning a very flexible schedule for us. Our guide TB made every part of the adventure feel comfortable, safe and fun. TB is a very experienced guide and has a wealth of knowledge. Hearing him share interesting information and stories about the culture and the beautiful places we were walking through really enriched our journey. Nepal Mountain Trekkers really do go out of their way to cater to your individual needs, their friendly expert guides will ensure you have the best possible time in Nepal. Ramesh and the team are professional and personable in their approach to helping you create the adventure you have always dreamed of.

We were not quite sure if trekking was going to be something for us, especially because we were traveling with our 2,5yr old son. Ramesh gave us many tips, thought out of the box and suggested alternatives should the trip not be what we expected. Min, our guide was the best we could have wished for. He took plenty of time for us, arranged food and drinks, after a day or two Min just knew what we would have for drinks and would order for us so we haven’t had to wait. He chose excellent small hotels to stop along the way, played with our son and was a fine partner to have conversations with. He told a lot about the environment, life in Nepal and his native village where not much was left of it after the 2015 earthquake. We have chosen to do an 8 day trek through Poon Hill, Ghandruk, Landruk, and the hotsprings. The walking days were definitely not too long and the road there is plenty of opportunity for you to catch your breath and enjoy the view. Although we kept asking Min how far we still had to go and when we had our next stop, he kept being all friendly and smiling the whole time. We also hired a porter to carry our heavy bag along the way, it was his first trip though he seemed to enjoy it and ran uphill like he never did something else in his life After trekking we’ve decided to stay for a few extra days in Pokhara, the hotel Nepal Mountain Trekkers had arranged was really good, staff was wonderful and we just loved this city. If in Nepal, you haven’t seen the beauty of this amazing country if you haven’t been trekking. Definitely would recommend Ramesh en Min, and all other guides at Nepal Mountain Trekkers. Good price, excellent service. Would do this all over again when we come back to Nepal.

Fitness Required for Trek

To prepare for a trek, we need to strengthen our 2 prime M’s – Mind and Muscle, the body. Only then, the spending of the 3rd M – Money; a little or more, can bring to us an intense lifelong experience like trekking. At high altitude as the air gets thinner oxygen becomes less abundant. The percentage saturation of haemoglobin with oxygen determines the content of oxygen in our blood. After the human body reaches around 2,100 m (7,000 feet) above sea level, the level of oxygen in our haemoglobin begins to plummet. However, the human body has both short-term and long-term adaptations to altitude that allow it to partially compensate for the lack of oxygen. You can train yourself to run 3 kms in 30 minutes as per the schedule given below. Remember always start your training program with stretching and warm up exercises.

You can follow this stretching before run

  • Ankle Rolls
  • Wrist Stretch
  • Standing Hamstring Stretch
  • Standing Quad stretch
  • Calf Stretch
  • Finish with leg swings

After 15 min of stretching you can follow this training schedule for trekking fitness required.

Week 1: Start with 10 minute of brisk walk and then jog for 10 minutes and finally 10minutes of easy walk. Week 2: 5 minutes of brisk walk 15 minutes of jog 5 minutes of easy walk Week 3: 5 minutes of brisk walk 15 minutes of jog 5 minutes of easy walk Week 4: 5 minutes of brisk walk and jog for 25 min and cool down your body.

MIND, THE MENTAL ENDURANCE : To build our physical endurance prior to trek, we workout in a gymnasium or outdoors nearby. In both the cases, we actually choose a suitable environment for us to sweat. So, even if you get extremely fit before the trek, you don’t get exposed to the versatile environmental or climatic challenges that nature offers during a trek. All these environmental conditions have a deep impact on our body and mind too. A walk through heavy rains or snowfall, even in a normal gradient, becomes more challenging than the same trail in a pleasant weather. And it happens not only because of rain or snow makes the walk more difficult. Also, you need to adjust, tolerate and fight the adverse nature psychologically in which your body and mind are not habituated. Here, your mind comes into play. This is where the game becomes more mental than physical. 1. Bulid your own motivation system. 2. Use your passion to bring more motivation. 3. Study about your trek route to gain knowledge to plan and prepare yourself appropriately. 4. Think positive & stay focused. 5. Visualization is a common technique for handling stress. Developing mental strength is not a one day game. Your experiences are the best teacher. You become more confident after every trek. Cherish your journey after completion of the trek. Sense, the achievement. These will build your mind stronger forever, no matter where you want to use it for, a trek or a life.

THUMB RULES FOR BETTER IMPACT

1. Hire a digital trainer for free. The key is to do it perfect than more in numbers. Use video tutorial, mobile apps, read blogs and use a mirror to make it perfect. 2. Be a regular, rather inconsistent & intense. 3. Drink more water during the exercise routine and more importantly in the time of trekking. Keep dehydration, muscles cramps, and life-threatening hypothermia away. 4. Food is fuel. Maintain a well-balanced diet consist of carbohydrate, fat, and protein during your exercise and trekking days. 5. Sleep well. Finally, the lack of sleep can spoil your whole preparation for a trek.
