Tour of Britain: Olav Kooij makes it three on stage 3

Jumbo-Visma rider holds off Van Poppel to extend race lead

Jumbo-Visma's domination at the 2023 Tour of Britain continued on stage 3 in Beverley as race leader Olav Kooij won his third stage in a row, beating Danny van Poppel (Bora-Hansgrohe) to the line after another impeccable lead-out from his Dutch team.

The 21-year-old secured his 10th win of the season after jumping off teammate Wout van Aert's wheel on the rising road to the line at the end of the 155km stage, holding off Bennett and Ethan Vernon (Great Britain) to secure Jumbo-Visma's 55th victory of 2023.

The team controlled the peloton for much of the day and were back to the fore in the final kilometres as the likes of Edoardo Affini and Nathan Van Hooydonck led the way for Van Aert and Kooij to repeat what they'd done in the opening two days of the race.

Leading from the front, there was once again little chance that any other sprinter would be beating Kooij, with Van Poppel managing to get closer than anyone had on stages 1 and 2, at least.

155km earlier, right at the start of the race, the trio of James Fouché (Bolton Equities Black Spoke), Harry Tanfield (TDT-Unibet), and Nícolas Sessler (Global 6) formed the break of the day. Mountain classification leader Fouché was striving to collect more points on the two classified climbs on the day as the break's advantage maxed out at the three-minute mark

Jumbo-Visma controlled the front of the peloton for race leader and double stage winner Olav Kooij, while up front Fouché duly picked up eight more KOM points at the two third-category climbs of the day.

Those climbs – 40 and 80km into the stage – were the main events of a largely quiet day up the road for the break, with Tanfield leading the way over the day's only intermediate sprint after 110km. By that point, what was once a three-minute gap had closed down to under a minute, with Fouché dropping back early and leaving his two breakaway mates to battle on into the final 40km alone.

Passing that 40km mark, three riders from Saint Piran – Alexandar Richardson, Harry Birchill, and Jack Rootkin-Gray – took a flyer off the front of the peloton, riding a mini team time trial across to the break 30 seconds up the road.

The five leaders held their gap for a handful of kilometres, though with an upping of the pace as the cross/tailwind hit they wouldn't hold out for much longer as the peloton swallowed them up with 35km to go.

10km later, attacks flew at the head of the peloton as reigning champion Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar) was joined in a strong move by Connor Swift (Ineos Grenadiers), Nathan Van Hooydonck (Jumbo-Visma), Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe), Rasmus Tiller (Uno-X), Tim Naberman (dsm-firmenich), Nicolò Parisini (Q36.5), and Bolton Equities Black Spoke pair Matthew Bostock and Jacob Scott.

That group held a 20-second lead as they hit the final 20km, though they weren't settled, with Politt and Bostock both shooting off the front. Jumbo-Visma pulled behind, bringing the bulk of the attack group back at 17km to go, though Politt and Bostock fought on.

Movistar joined the chase heading into the final 15km, their might combined with Jumbo-Visma surely spelling the end for the two escapees. In the end, Politt gave up the ghost at the 7km mark, while Bostock pushed on a little longer before he was caught at 6.2km.

With that, yet another sprint showdown at the finish was set up as Q36.5 and dsm-firmenich also joined the fray at the front of the peloton. The final 3km would be dominated by WorldTour titans Jumbo-Visma and Ineos Grenadiers, however.

Edoardo Affini and Van Hooydonck led into the final kilometre, setting up the script for Wout van Aert and Kooij to put the final touches on a third victory in a row. Van Hooydonck pulled off at 500 metres to go, leaving Van Aert to power up the final stretch on the uphill finish. Van Poppel and Vernon raced along on Kooij's wheel, but neither had the power to pull along or get past the Dutchman in the final metres, leaving him and Jumbo-Visma to celebrate once again.

Tour of Britain 2023 overview

The Tour of Britain is an eight-day race that offers up a gentler alternative to the Vuelta a España taking place on the continent. Taking place across England and Wales from September 3-10, this year's edition has a sprinter-friendly route that's rounded out with a mouthwatering Queen stage in South Wales.

The stage race's varied terrain typically favours the puncheurs of the peloton, with Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) all getting their hands on the overall title since 2018.

The latter of those stars returns to the race this year, alongside another highly talented multi-disciplinarian in Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers). Also on the startlist is his Spanish teammate Carlos Rodríguez and Irishman Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Tour of Britain 2023 route

This year's Tour of Britain route is relatively sprinter-friendly, owing to the terrain in Britain, but it heads to Wales for a decisive final day which ramps up the climbing.

Tour of Britain 2023 contenders

The combination of many sprinter-friendly stages and a testing Queen stage on the final day of this year's Tour of Britain mean a whole host of riders could find success in England and Wales.

Overall winner in 2021, Wout van Aert ( Jumbo-Visma ) returns to the race as a hot favourite alongside Tom Pidcock ( Ineos Grenadiers ). Both riders could threaten on just about any of the parcours.

Several fastmen will be hoping to scoop up stage victories with Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma) and Ethan Vernon (Great Britain) arriving at the race on the back of promising seasons, whilst an out-of-form Sam Bennett ( Bora-Hansgrohe ) will hope to challenge too.

Stage 8 includes four category one climbs and will likely decide the overall. Expect the likes of Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiers) Tobias Halland Johannessen ( Uno-X Pro Cycling ), Mark Donovan ( Q36.5 Pro Cycling ), Stephen Williams (Great Britain) and Carlos Verona ( Movistar ) to come to the fore alongside Pidcock and van Aert.

What happened in the Tour of Britain 2022?

The 2022 Tour of Britain was cut short following stage 5 due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Movistar's Gonzalo Serrano was crowned the overall winner ahead of Ineos Grenadiers' Tom Pidcock. The pair matched either other blow-for-blow during the five days of racing that did take place but the Spaniard decisively edged out Pidcock to win stage 4 in Duncombe Park, Helmsley, meaning he was ahead by three bonus seconds when the race was curtailed.

Tour of Britain history

The Tour of Britain has established itself as the leading men’s stage race in Great Britain. The race is now in its 19th year and regularly attracts a mix of WorldTour teams and UK-based squads. The race is often used as a stepping stone and preparation event ahead of the UCI Road World Championships but that element has been taken away by the decision to host the Worlds earlier in the 2023 season. That said, the Tour of Britain is still expected to produce exciting racing between some of the best riders in the world.

In 2022   Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar Team) came out on top to win the overall ahead of the Ineos Grenadiers pairing of Tom Pidcock and Omar Fraile. Other former winners include Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel, Julian Alaphilippe and former Tour de France winner, Bradley Wiggins. Sprinter Mark Cavendish currently holds the record for the most Tour of Britain stage wins with 10 victories spanning his long and decorated career.

The Tour of Britain has evolved into one of the toughest cycling races in the world, attracting some of the sport's biggest stars. This year, all eyes will be on 23-year-old Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers). Having won Olympic gold in Tokyo and won a stage at this year's Tour de France, he's expected to leave his mark on the 2022 Tour of Britain too.

The race started in Aberdeen, Scotland, before snaking its way down to Hawick, crossing the border into Durham and taking in Redcar. Stage 5 – the longest ride of the 2022 Tour de Britain – kicks off in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire. Stage 6 rolls through Gloucestershire and features three sprints. Stage 7 starts in West Bay on the English coast, and will test the riders with two brutal climbs: Whiteways Hill and Okeford Hill.

The finale stage – stage 8 – takes place on the Isle of White. It's a 148.9km run from Ryde to The Needles, culminating in a final climb with a gradient of 9.6 percent, making it one of the hardest climbs of any Tour of Britain.

Cycling fans in the UK can watch every moment of the race free on ITV4 - the channel will broadcast all eight stages live from start to finish. Make sure you know how to watch a free 2022 Tour of Britain live stream from anywhere in the world. Instructions just below.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) helps you get around this obstacle. A VPN creates a private connection between your device and the internet, such that the servers and services you’re accessing aren’t aware of what you’re doing. All the information passing back and forth is entirely encrypted.

There are lots of VPN providers but some are more reliable and safe than others. As a rule, we suggest a paid-for service such as ExpressVPN which offers a 100 per cent risk-free money back guarantee. Tour of Britain Women: Lizzie Deignan 'grateful' as Wales to host first two stages of 2024 tour

  • Published 5 days ago

Women's Tour of Britain

The Women's Tour of Britain will return to Wales

Britain's Lizzie Deignan says she is grateful the Tour of Britain Women has returned "against the odds" as British Cycling revealed the route.

Wales will host the first two stages of the 2024 race, which starts on 6 June.

The first edition under its new name - it was previously known solely as the Women's Tour - will begin in Welshpool, with stage one ending in Llandudno.

"I'm really grateful to the people who have made it happen against he odds," said Lidl-Trek's former winner Deignan.

"Hard work has gone on behind the scenes to pull this event off. Sometimes it's underestimated how much it takes to put on a race," the 35-year-old added.

The Women's Tour was cancelled in 2023 after organisers failed to find the funding required for the race.

The world's top female riders and teams will race through Wrexham on day two as the rebranded event returns this year.

The tour will then move on to Warrington before concluding in Greater Manchester on Sunday, 9 June.

Deignan added: "People in the UK are brilliant sports fans and there's this sense of excitement and thrill at being able to be part of a spectacle like a bike race - and it's exciting to be able watch at the side of road and to be in centre of that is not something I take for granted."

Jon Dutton, chief executive of British Cycling, said: "While there is still a great deal of work to do, today is another important milestone in our journey and reflective of the enormous goodwill and support which major road cycling events continue to enjoy.

"Our primary focus has been to deliver a safe and competitive race in 2024, but we remain every bit as determined to harness the race's spotlight to make a real impact in the communities which it touches, and know that is a vision which resonates strongly in conversations with prospective commercial partners and hosts."

The four stages include varying terrain, with the first stage beginning in mid-Wales before riders head to Llandudno on the north coast.

Starting and ending in Wrexham on day two, riders will take on the challenging climbs in the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley.

They will then cross the border to begin and end stage three in Warrington, a flatter route which will favour the sprinters.

British Cycling take on organising Tour of Britain races for men and women

The fourth and final day sees riders depart from National Cycling Centre, the home of British Cycling, before finishing the tour in Leigh.

Rod Ellingworth, Tour of Britain race director, said: "It's been a monumental effort by the whole team over the past 10 weeks to confirm the stages for this year's Tour of Britain Women.

"The race will take in four competitive and challenging routes, some challenging climbing in Wales and what I'm sure will be brilliant crowds on the roadside throughout."

Tour of Britain Women 2024:

Stage 1 - Thursday 6 June 2024: Welshpool to Llandudno

Stage 2 - Friday 7 June 2024: Wrexham

‘Monumental effort’ means Women’s Tour of Britain goes ahead in 2024

  • Condensed four-stage race begins in Welshpool on 6 June
  • Lizzie Deignan: ‘I’m grateful to the people who have pulled it off’

British Cycling has named the host towns for this summer’s Tour of Britain Women after what has been described as “monumental effort” to make sure the race goes ahead.

Ten weeks after the Guardian reported the governing body would organise the race in-house following the collapse of SweetSpot group, the outline of the route has been unveiled, with an opening stage starting in Welshpool and finishing in Llandudno on 6 June.

Stage two will start and finish in Wrexham, stage three will begin and end in Warrington, and the final stage will start outside the National Cycling Centre in Manchester and finish in Leigh on 9 June.

This year’s race will be limited to four stages – down from six for the previous edition of the Women’s Tour in 2022 – due to the time restrictions British Cycling has faced, but there is an ambition to grow in the future.

Rod Ellingworth, the former deputy team principal of the Ineos Grenadiers who joined as race director last month, said: “It’s been a monumental effort by the whole team over the past 10 weeks to confirm the stages for this year’s Tour of Britain Women.”

The governing body’s chief executive, Jon Dutton, admitted there had been “many” moments in the last 10 weeks where he feared the race might not take place. “I dare say with 52 days to go there will be a few more bumps in the road,” Dutton said.

“We’ve had local authorities, start towns and finish towns who’ve said: ‘We’re in’ and then subsequently said: ‘We’re not in’ and that’s difficult. We’ve always had the idea of a condensed, compact race and when one pulls out that’s an issue across the board.”

British Cycling is also working on the men’s Tour of Britain, with that race due to take place over six days in September rather than the usual eight.

Dutton added that British Cycling is continuing to seek further investment for what he described as two “expensive races”. Much of the money will come from hosting fees and broadcast contracts, close to being agreed but not yet finalised, but there is a need for more commercial revenue.

All six of the UK’s UCI Continental level teams have signed up for the women’s race, and the former world champion Lizzie Deignan will swap her Lidl-Trek jersey for Britain colours to lead a national squad.

after newsletter promotion

“Sometimes it’s easy to underestimate how much it takes to put on a race so I’m really grateful to the people who have pulled it off against the odds,” Deignan said.

The 35-year-old wants to use the race to prepare for a busy summer which will hopefully include the Paris Olympics, but admitted the broken arm she suffered in a crash at last month’s Tour of Flanders had come at a bad time.

“The main concern for me is it’s during Olympic selection time so I’ve missed a good chunk of races I was peaking for in terms of getting selected,” said Deignan. “There’s plenty of time until the Olympics itself to get fit and ready, but selection is harder than it’s ever been so it’s obviously bad timing.”

Stage two from Kemer to Kas is a much longer 190km and with a couple of lumps near the start and a sizeable climb 60km from the finish it could see a much more attacking race.

Stage three from the popular resort of Fethiye to Marmaris is a very hilly affair but maybe not hilly enough to get rid of the sprinters who could have their day again at the finish.

There are two classified climbs on stage four including a second category ascent after 94km to shake things up so it is likely a much smaller group will make it into Bodrum to contest the finish.

Stage five between Bodrum and Kusadasi is lumpy again but the climbs are smaller so the pendulum again swings in favour of the fast men, although they will be made to work for it, especially over the final peak with 30km left to race.

Stage six is the queen stage with a mountain top finish at Manisa. This 20km climb takes the riders up above 1000m altitude and will be pivotal in deciding the outcome of the general classification.

Stage seven has just one minor lump just before half way before an absolutely pan flat run to the line and then the race ends with stage eight in and around the bustling city of Istanbul.

Simon Warren has been obsessed with cycling since the summer of 1989 after watching Greg Lemond battle Laurent Fignon in the Tour de France. Although not having what it took to beat the best, he found his forte was racing up hills and so began his fascination with steep roads. This resulted in his 2010’s best-selling  100 Greatest Cycling Climbs , followed to date by 14 more guides to vertical pain. Covering the British Isles, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain he has been riding and racing up hills and mountains for over 30 years now. He hosts talks, guides rides, has written columns for magazines and in 2020 released his first book of cycling routes,  RIDE BRITAIN . Simon splits his time between working as a graphic designer and running  his 100 Climbs brand  and lives in Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District with his wife and two children.
