Review: Eurowings Discover A330-200 Premium Economy

a plane on the runway

I enjoyed a very pleasant flight on Eurowings Discover onboard an A330-200 in premium economy class and found the service, amenities, and even the food excellent.

Eurowings Discover A330-200 Premium Economy Review

Eurowings Discover is owned by the Lufthansa Group and serves leisure destinations around Africa, the Mediterranean, North America, and the Caribbean. I did not set out to book a longhaul on Eurowings, but my destination was Mombasa, Kenya and the schedule of the Eurowings Discover flight from Frankfurt (an overnight flight) lined up perfectly.

I booked this flight as a Lufthansa flight number in premium economy and although business class space was available for booking with miles (using both Air Canada Aeroplan and United MileagePlus), I was not able to use PlusPoints to secure the upgrade, since even though Lufthansa owns Eurowings Discover and sold this flight as a Lufthansa flight number, it was not really a Lufthansa flight.

After a long walk to the C Gates and stop in the Lufthansa Bistro Lounge , it was time to board.

Eurowings Discover (4Y) 134 Frankfurt (FRA) – Mombassa (MBA) Monday, November 28 Depart: 08:10 PM Arrive: 06:30 AM+1 Duration: 08hr, 25min Distance: 4,157 miles Aircraft: Airbus A330-200 Seat: 12K (Premium Economy Class)

This flight operated from Frankfurt to Mombassa then continued on to Kilimanjaro. Onboard a very junior crew greeted me. Business class features the Lufthansa longhaul seats in a 2-2-2 configuration:

Economy class is arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration:

But today I was flying in premium economy class.

I’ve flown the Lufthansa premium economy seat before, though it has been several years. After a long overnight flight from San Francisco to Munich in which I got a lot of rest, I was not tired so this seat worked out quite well, despite being an overnight flight. However, I really don’t view premium economy as a halfway between economy class and business class: it’s much more like a larger economy class seat than anything like a lie-flat business class seat.

The seats are made by ZIM and arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration, with 17 seats on my particular aircraft (there are three different configurations of the 4Y A330) and no curtain between economy class and premium economy class. Seats are 18 inches wide with 38 inches of seat pitch, a footrest, and a recline of eight inches, which is about double that of economy class.

Recline is manually adjusted and there is a small storage compartment and power plugs in the center console between seats.

a seatbelt lock with a seatbelt in the middle

There’s also a small compartment intended for water bottles located in the seat in front of you.

a bottle in a container

It’s a very comfortable seat if you do not need to sleep.

Sitting at each seat was a very soft and plush blanket and pillow, which is much better than the bedding offered in business class on Austrian, LOT Polish, or SWISS. I had brought a blanket along, fearing an economy class style blanket, but curled up in this blanket and quite enjoyed it.

I may have nodded off for a couple of hours, but spent most of the flight working and enjoying German movies.

I always enjoy mood lighting onboard, which can make any aircraft feel modern.

IFE + Wi-Fi

Each seat on this plane has an individual screen with a library of movies, TV shows, games, and music.

With my work done and plenty of caffeine in my body, I watched a couple of German movies which I quite enjoyed. One, Alles in bester Ordnung , was about minimalism and holding onto material goods (a personal struggle of mine) and the other, called Stasi Komodie , was about a writer in Berlin who was able to review his Stasi file years after the fall of the GDR.

a screen shot of a computer

I even watched Oblivion, a 2013 Tom Cruise film I had not recalled watching previously.

I only watch movies on planes and quite enjoyed this binge.

Complimentary headphones were provided.

The screen could be controlled by tapping it or through a passenger service unit.

a remote control on a seat

There was no wi-fi internet available onboard, but there was an intranet system that included a moving flight map, duty-free catalog, option survey, and a selection of magazines.

(the gaming link did not work, producing a very odd page and nothing else)

The views out the window, especially during sunrise and landing, were mesmerizing.

Food + Drink

Dinner was served after takeoff with breakfast prior to landing. Service began with a pre-departure beverage; a thick non-alcoholic orange mango drink that was very refreshing.

a plastic cup with orange liquid on a tray

After takeoff, dinner service began with a moist towelette.

people sitting in an airplane

Dinner choices included a Chinese-style chicken dish or butternut squash ravioli in a mushroom sauce. The ravioli was genuinely excellent ( one of my top airline meals of 2022 ) and I also enjoyed the shrimp appetizer and brie cheese.

a tray of food on a table

I did not think alcohol was included, but ordered Mionetto spritz (like an Aperol spritz) nad was not changed.

a bottle and a cup of liquid on a table

Metal cutlery is used in premium economy class.

a tray of food on a tray

At the end of dinner, a hot chocolate chip cookie was served, which was another unexpected treat.

a hand holding a cookie

Two hours prior to landing (which I felt was at least 30 minutes too early, but was awake anyway), breakfast was served. I was not expecting another substantial meal, but breakfast began with another moist towelette and included scrambled eggs with cooked spinach and tomato chutney, a side of deli meat, yogurt with blueberries and apricot sauce, and a hot bread roll. I enjoyed it and even found the coffee quite acceptable.

a hand holding a white napkin

Just prior to landing, every passenger was offered a mint.

a small packet of peppermint on a blue fabric surface

Eurowings Discover did a great job with catering out of Frankfurt.

The lavatory was clean and featured L’Occitane-branded hand lotion and airline-branded soap.

Amenity Kit

Eurowings Discover uses the same amenity kits as Lufthansa, which for premium featured a reasonable grocery tote bag (I love these) with an eye shade, ear plugs, and socks inside.

a folded blue and white fabric

Service was outstanding onboard. The crew all looked to be in their early to mid-20s and there was a great desire to serve, which was evident from the moment I stepped onboard. These flight attendants are paid less than their counterparts at Lufthansa and this has prompted some contentious labor battles, but the crew was charming and attentive.

We landed on-time in Mombassa, where the majority of passengers remained onboard since this flight continued to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania (JRO). Those who did exit were hit with a blast of summer heat…we were not in the Northern Hemisphere anymore! A jetbridge was drawn to the plane, but much of the walkway to the immigration area was outdoors.

a group of people in a hallway

I had a much more pleasant flight than I was expecting on Eurowings Discover and while I always prefer business class over premium economy, the product was genuinely not bad. The food was quite edible, the service excellent, blanket superb, and I walked away quite happy I had chosen this route to reach Kenya.

I just don’t understand Premium Economy. Every time I’m on a long haul flight, I generally change before landing, and when I look in to the PE cabin, all the pax look just as tired and exhausted as if they were flying in Y.

' src=

Yeah it really does not seem to add much but I guess if pax feel it’s worth it..

' src=

For a daytime flight of up to 8-10 hours my wife and I prefer PE to the individual pods for business class. we can actually see each other and converse over meals or whenever. For a daytime flight we are not interested in any serious sleep, and the PE seats are more than adequate for dozing off for a while if we feel like it. Unobstructed aisle access is no big deal either. I’m 6’5″, and the legroom is not an issue.

Unfortunately, many airlines price their PE award seats nearly as dearly as business, rather than closer to an economy award ticket. Also, you can only get that satisfying rush of superiority when you look at the plebes if you are in business I guess.

' src=

What a lovely premium economy experience. The food looked wonderful

I would just like to know how eggs are offered on planes.. are they scrambled at the caterer then frozen and reheated. Didn’t know eggs reheat well, if so, never tried it.

' src=

Are you serious? The dinner entree looks vile.

' src=

It was delicious. Great pasta dish.

' src=

Did the footrest make the seat more or less comfortable? Or was it pointless having it?

Also, does having a bulkhead seat give you a leg room advantage in this cabin?

' src=

Eurowings premium economy looks like a better product than narrowbody domestic US business class.

Your listed the plane in the header Matthew FYI “Aircraft: Airbus A320-200”

I just read this, as I am embarking on a flight from Atlanta to Cluj Napoca, Romania in a few weeks. I booked with Lufthansa, but, flying Eurowings from ATL-FRA in premium economy. Your article was very encouraging. Vielen dank!

Review: Eurowings Discover Airbus A330 Business Class (Mauritius to Frankfurt)

Wednesday  newsletters  always feature a  hotel  or  flight  review.

I recently enjoyed a sunny holiday on the beautiful island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. You can read my trip reports here:

Today: Eurowings Discover Airbus A330 Business Class (Mauritius to Frankfurt)

I recently flew Business Class in a  Eurowings Discover Airbus A330-300 from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) in Mauritius to Frankfurt International Airport in Germany. Eurowings Discover is the newest leisure airline of the Lufthansa Group, flying to leisure destinations across the Americas, Asia and Africa. The airline launched in July 2021 with two flights to Zanzibar and Mombasa, each of which departed from its hub in Frankfurt. The carrier has steadily expanded since its launch and currently has a fleet of 10 Airbus A320s and 11 (ex-Lufthansa) Airbus A330s. Eurowings Discover is not to be confused with Eurowings; although both airlines are closely related and use the same branding, they’re actually two separate airlines: Eurowings is a low-coast airline that focuses on short-haul flights from Germany, whereas Eurowings Discover focuses on medium- and long-haul flights.

On its longhaul destinations, like Mauritius, Eurowings Discover operates its A330 aircraft, which offer a Business Class product that is 100% identical to the one offered by Lufthansa. From the Business Class cabin layout and seats to the amenities and meals, I couldn’t tell the difference with a regular Lufthansa Business Class flight. It is actually nice and refreshing to see a leisure airline (considered to be low-cost) offering the exact same premium product as its full service sister airline. And although I read some negative reviews about Eurowings Discover prior to my experience and was expecting the worst, I was pretty happy with my flight and the excellent onboard service. Of course, the 2-2-2 Business Class layout has become a dated product but it might still work on leisure routes, where passengers are often families or friends who want to sit together.

Have you ever flown with Eurowings Discover? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment .

  • My verdict (score)

Mauritius’ only international airport is located in the south east of Mauritius, about 48 km or 30 mi (a 45 minutes’ drive by car) from the capital city Port Louis. The airport, which has a capacity of 4 million passengers is named after Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the first Prime Minister of Mauritius. It features a modern terminal, constructed in 2013 and designed after the “traveler’s palm”, a tropical plant that grows on Mauritius. The airport has two lounges and Eurowings Discover’s Business Class passengers have access to the Amédée Maingard Lounge, the flagship lounge of the island’s flag carrier, Air Mauritius.

The Amédée Maingard Lounge is spread over two floors but only the downstairs area was open during my visit (which was rather disappointing since – based on reviews of other bloggers – the upstairs floor seems to offer a better experience). The space is divided into a sitting area and dining area, with plenty of seating available. Unfortunately, the downstairs lounge doesn’t have windows, although a green wall adds a colorful and lively design touch, which lifts the ambiance a bit. A buffet is located next to the main seating area, offering both hot and cold food options (mostly soups and rice dishes), salad, fruit, and drinks.

Other facilities at the lounge include a selection of newspapers and magazines, flat-screen TV with satellite channels, showers and free Wi-Fi.

2. BUSINESS CLASS CABIN

Eurowings Discover’s A330-300 features 30 Business Class flat-bed seats with 180 degrees recline, 28 Premium Economy recliner seats, and 225 standard Economy Class seats.

Located in one large cabin in the front of the plane, the 30 Business Class seats are arranged in a 2-2-2 layout and spread over 5 rows. The windows seats are staggered by a few inches (cm), while remarkably, the center seats are angled slightly towards one another. The latter is great for couples but not for solo travelers, since the feet compartment is located right next to the one of your neighbor, and it is possible that your legs and feet occasionally touch the ones of your neighbor while resting or sleeping. Overall, all seats lack privacy, and there’s not even a divider or privacy screen between paired seats, although I assume this might work for a leisure airline (with most passengers being couples, families, or friends traveling together).

As already mentioned, the Business Class cabin is exactly the same as the one offered in Lufthansa’s planes (with some subtle differences, such as headcovers with the Eurowings Discover logo instead of the Lufthansa logo). The cabin has a clean and unremarkable yet very German-esque design, with white cabin walls and grey seat covers creating a neutral color palette. The only colors you’ll see are the wooden panels between paired seats.

3. BUSINESS CLASS SEAT (+ BEST & WORST SEATS)

The Eurowings Discover A330 Business Class seat is quite comfortable in the upright position, with a pitch of 162 cm (64 inch) and a width of 52 cm (20,5 inch). A reading light is located next to the head rest. The center arm rest holds the seat controls, a handset for the inflight entertainment, and a fold-out tray table. The other armrest – either along the window or the aisle – can be lowered or raised, allowing for more comfort in the seat’s flatbed position.

Each seat is equipped with its own entertainment screen, whose position can be slightly adjusted according to the passenger’s need. A storage drawer is located below the TV screen, as well as a small footrest (ottoman) that becomes part of the seat when fully reclined. As mentioned above, paired seats in the center of the plane share their ottomans, with a small divider in between (although not sufficient to prevent accidental feet cuddling with your neighbor), while the footrests of the paired seats on the side are separated by a large console.

At the push of a button, the seat reclines into a full lie flat-bed with a length of 78 inch (198 cm). The seat feels a bit firm though and unfortunately, Eurowings Discover does not provide a mattress to enhance the sleeping comfort.

What are the  best Business Class seats  on Eurowings Disover’s A330?

  • All seats, except for those in the first and last row, are quiet good for couples. Make sure to prebook your seat online (which can be done free of charge) to avoid disappointment at the airport, since Eurowings Discover’s flights are often fully packed.

What are the  worst Business Class seats  on Eurowings Discover’s A330?

  • The 2-2-2 Business Class layout does not make the cabin very attractive for solo travelers, since you will always end up sitting next to a stranger. And unfortunately, there is no screen between adjoining seats for added privacy.
  • Window seats don’t offer direct aisle access.
  • Passengers seated in the first row of both cabins may be bothered by the noise of the galley and passengers going to or returning from the lavatories.
  • I also suggest to avoid the last row of Business Class, which is just in front of the Premium Economy bassinet seats.

4. AMENITIES & BEDDING

Eurowings Discover’s Business Class passengers receive the following amenities on longhaul flights:

  • A Lufthansa Group amenity kit, which is wrapped inside a reusable tote bag. The kit features the essential travel items (e.g. toothpaste, toothbrush, socks and a single breath mint) as well as some L’Occitane toiletries. To reduce waste, eye masks and ear plugs are not provided inside the bag but are available in the lavatories
  • A comfortable, thick pillow
  • An excellent blanket
  • AKG noise cancelling headphones

EUROWINGS DISCOVER BUSINESS CLASS

Two meals were offered on this Eurowings Discover’s day flight from Mauritius to Frankfurt: a light breakfast after takeoff and a 3-course dinner prior to landing.

Breakfast service comprised:

  • Yoghurt on crispy muesli with fresh pineapple, blueberries and orange
  • Smoked salmon with creamy horseradish
  • Scrambled eggs with dried tomato and broccoli
  • Rolls, croissant, selection of ham, honey and Nutella

I had the following selection from the menu for dinner:

  • Appetizer from Norway’s Fjords: cold smoked salmon filet on pea- and cauliflower crème, pickled carrots and pumpernickel crumbles
  • Salad: mixed leaf lettuce with tomato, olive oil, and balsamic dressing
  • Main course (described as ‘German classic meets Italian classic’): braised beef cheeks in aromatic gravy, purple gnocchi, and sautéed Zucchini
  • Dessert: passionfruit cake with raspberry compote

Food was actually quite good and the dishes were nicely presented (except for the main course of my dinner, which had a rather unappealing look, although it did taste excellent).

6. ENTERTAINMENT

Eurowings Disover’s inflight entertainment is similar to Lufthansa’s, and that’s not good news. The system is controlled by a handheld remote, but unfortunately, scrolling with the handset through the selection of movies and TV shows is very slow. The TV screen has a low resolution and the program itself has a dated layout, but nonetheless it offers a large choice with more than 100 films in up to eight different languages. Hollywood blockbusters, new German and European productions and films from Japan, China, India and many other countries cater for all tastes. There are also 200 TV programs available as well as a big choice of entertainment content for families and children. The audio section features a large selection of CDs, audio books, playlists and podcasts from around the world.

8. OTHER INFLIGHT EXPERIENCES

# CREW : The Eurowings Discover flight attendants on this particular flight coudn’t have been better. They were professional, efficient and discrete, and seemed to love doing their job.

# LAVATORY : Eurowings Discover’s A330-300 features two lavatories for Business Class passengers, both of them located in the galley between the two Business Class cabins. The lavatories were stocked with Vervaine toiletries.

They canceled a flight from Rome to Hamburg not offering a new flight until 2 days later. No offer of hotel, no offer of $$$ for food. Then the replacement flight was canceled as well. We arrived home 3 days later than scheduled and this was within Europe! I have ever since tried to get compensation and reimbursement for the extra expenses that occurred because of the 3 day delay. 3 months later I still haven't heard back and there is no phone number to call to inquire. You can only continue to write emails. I've seen bad customer service in the airline industry but this complete lack of response is a first. Never again Eurowings.

  • Customer service

They sell headphones 2 euro each person ,9 euros for blankets , they only give drinks what they have ,not many options ..water, coke ,apple or orange and tomato juice if they have ..you ask tomato juice they say not left and then 3 hours later they offer they have only tomato juice..its like a joke..terrible cabin crew attitudes if you are in the economy class. The most terrible thing was food service ..they gave very cold a piece of bread filled with some vegetables no other options and a cap of juice in the first hour after we took off and then next meal was just 2 hours before we landed ,so almost we were sitting 8-9 hours no food at all ..Flight was from 8am in the morning to 6pm Frankfurt time I wish I know in advance they are like Easyjet,Ryanair or Wizzair even worse and I would prepare all my meals and snacks .. Other thing is flight entertainment screen and selection of films ..really limited, Leg room was other issue ,terrible 12 hours ..I even had a more leg room in any other short distance flights .. No way again , Never ever ..

I had a cancellation in September and still have received no refund. Any other airline would have refunded me by now. I can't get through to their customer service either as it is a German company. Which is surprising because it is the land of efficiency. AVOID AT ALL COSTS TAKE ANY OTHER AIRLINE NOT EUROWINGS! IT IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE AND A DISCRASE.

Never. EVER. Take a flight with these people. The flight crew was very kind, but we were stuck on the plane for nearly 2 hours trying to take off but could not due to "the computer not working". We were then shuttled off the plane and then had to wait an hour to receive any sort of news. We were then brought back onto the plane, waited another 30 minutes only to be told the computer still was not working. We were then shuttled back off of the plane and to the airport. They dropped us off in a random room with no one to talk to, no one to ask questions to, no one to answer any questions about a replacement plane. We then received an email 20 minutes later telling us we had a replacement flight 2 DAYS LATER. There were no representatives of the airline in the Barcelona airport, so we had literally no one to talk to. We stood in a line for 3 hours to try and talk to an information desk, but they gave us absolutely no help and could not even help us find a quicker flight. Eurowings is a garbage airline run by a goblin or an AI robot. Never. EVER. EVER TAKE A FLIGHT WITH THESE PEOPLE. Trying to get ahold of them is a nightmare and they have horrible communication and organization.

Discover - the "better" Eurowings?

Airbus A320 (Photo: Steffen Lorenz).

  • Last update:

  • Invite for a coffee!

A surprisingly good flight, free entertainment and an expensive aircraft model - in the Eurowings Discover A320 from Frankfurt to the Canary Islands.

It was a cold, dark January morning in Frankfurt, there had been night frosts and the day had started with my windshield being scraped clean. This trip report aroused my anticipation and curiosity when I booked it a few weeks ago. What hadn't I read and heard about Eurowings Discover in the weeks before. The most recent "favourite tool" of the Kranich Group Board, which was founded under the project name "Ocean", initially began flight operations on July 24, 2021 under flight number 4Y/OCN134 with an A330 previously operated by Sun Express Germany.

Just in time for the changeover to the current winter flight schedule, Discover then started to operate on short and medium-haul routes. In recent years there have been a large number of at least questionable decisions relating to the proclaimed "Wings concept".

The Eurowings brand, which incidentally will celebrate its 30th birthday next year, mutated into a kind of guinea pig, accompanied by the associated negative press, which had to be coped with.

There was the first attempt of the “own” Eurowings long-haul route from Cologne/Bonn, operated by Sun Express Germany, which got off to a rocky start with record delays. Then there was, for example, the integration of Brussels Airlines into Eurowings, which seemed haphazard and has since been canceled, while the A320 OO-SNN is still a single aircraft as a kind of "contemporary witness" (to this day) in Eurowings livery, happily flying through Brussels Airlines flight numbers flies the area without ever having flown for Eurowings.

The Brussels Airlines A330s, which also fly in Eurowings optics, were actually also on the road for Eurowings from Düsseldorf and later Frankfurt, at least in the meantime, even if the attempt at our own outstation in Düsseldorf had an unexpectedly short guest appearance for me. Finally, there is the Eurowings Europe Station Vienna, which never really caught fire in its own right, was then on the road for Austrian Airlines until the Corona Pandemic and today has apparently lost any (own) raison d'être. Future? Questionable.

The whole thing could now be expanded indefinitely (e.g. LGW or 4U), which is why I have one question in particular: How much Eurowings is actually in this new "Eurowings Discover"?

Flight destinations / arrival

As of January 2022, Discover currently flies to 11 destinations from Frankfurt with a fleet of 8 aircraft, 330 long-haul aircraft of the type A200 (-300/3) and 320 - A200-21 (Sharklets version).

Traveling to Frankfurt by plane should not be a problem, as Discover is fully integrated into all Lufthansa sales channels and Rhein-Main Airport is connected to a large number of airports in the DACH region. Like the departures of the Lufthansa Group, the departure gates are generally located in Terminal 1, which means that Business Class or status guests can easily use the Business Class/Senator lounges in Frankfurt. However, due to the current legislation, a daily negative test was required to visit the LH Lounge this morning due to the 2G+ regulation, which was checked professionally and friendly separately before entry.

On the one hand, Discover has separately designated check-in counters in Terminal 1 of Frankfurt Airport. Depending on where the flight was booked, check-in is also possible via the Discover web check-in or via the Lufthansa app/website (this opens 23 hours before departure when combined with a Lufthansa flight).

Despite the fact that I had already uploaded the Covid documentation required in the course of the pandemic the day before and had also received confirmation by email, I did not receive my boarding pass in advance on this flight, which is why I had to go to the check-in counter in person in the morning for a follow-up check .

However, both the check of the documents and the subsequent security check went smoothly, so that I had already passed all checkpoints less than 15 minutes after reaching the terminal.

Since the aircraft was parked in an outside position with a short taxiway to Runway West that morning, bus boarding took place. Unfortunately, I have to say that boarding was very unstructured. At least this morning there was still plenty of room for improvement from the boarding crew in Frankfurt.

After about a 5-minute bus ride across the apron of Frankfurt Airport, I reached the A1 with the first bus about 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time, which is why I saw a punctual departure as a long way off. The crew greeted the boarding passengers in a friendly manner this morning with the plain white disinfectant wipes familiar from Lufthansa.

What immediately caught my eye was the completely different uniform of the cabin crew. Kept in a dark tone and only with light blue and violet accents, this, unlike the "smurf blue" Eurowings uniforms, was much more unobtrusive and classic.

The three A320s currently in service all have 174 seats in a 2-class configuration. Depending on requirements, the mobile class divider is installed in the front area and, together with curtains and privacy screens, separates the economy class from the business class.

In preparation for this flight, I had followed the prices and the seatmap for a long period of time, which fluctuated greatly. In the meantime, rows 1-7 were intended for business class, but on the day of travel "only" rows 1-4 were separated as business class. I think it's worth mentioning that in the end it was almost fully booked with 15 out of 16 available places.

trip report eurowings discover

With an upgrade system that works well like Lufthansa, there might have been even more in it, but unfortunately this doesn't really work at the moment and only for M&M miles plus a surcharge. On this test flight, the economy class started from row 5 and was also well occupied with 120 passengers on board.

Sockets or the like are not installed on the former Lufthansa A320SL, so the battery should be well charged on board. A minimal adjustment of the backrest (recline) is given, which means that the 3000km long flight in the front seat area (regardless of the travel class) can be survived without any difficulties.

In general, it can be said that the seat spacing in front of the emergency exit, as already mentioned, can be described as generous and is therefore absolutely worth the surcharge (when booking economy). The cabin was generally in very good condition and had obviously been carefully prepared again before the AOC change to Discover.

Since the A320 fleet usually only operates 2 flights a day at the moment and can therefore be regarded as being busy “half a day” at most – another clear indication that the cabin appeared almost untouched. However, this is likely to change quickly with the start of the 2022 summer flight schedule and the planned route network.

The flight / service on board

Like its competitors on short and medium-haul routes, Eurowings Discover offers a fee-based sales service in Economy Class with an extensive range of hot and cold dishes, sweet and salty snacks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Cold snacks such as a pretzel roll with chicken breast or the Vegan Chili Sin Carne Wrap (see slideshow) are available on board from €5, hot options such as (currently) Mac&Cheese or Chicken Terriyaki are available on board from €9,50. Half a liter of water is offered on board for €2,50 and is therefore slightly cheaper than at sister company Eurowings. As is often the case on board these days, you should have a credit or debit card to pay on board, as cash is not accepted on board.

trip report eurowings discover

In Business Class, you have the option of ordering one of the hot meals offered for sale in Economy Class free of charge. Open drinks (by the glass) are served in the same way as in Lufthansa Business Class. Before the start I was offered a non-alcoholic "Moscow Mule" as a welcome drink, but of course there was also a choice of water or orange juice. However, the reusable coffee cups made of gray plastic are a matter of taste.

Personally, I find a coffee from a porcelain cup that is also washable and therefore reusable much nicer and somehow more hygienic. However, this is solely due to the perspective of the beholder and, of course, the purchase of porcelain should also be associated with significantly higher costs. In Economy Class, I counted 4,5 sales runs on this flight, which lasted just over 3 hours.

In Business Class, after the aperitif and the selected warm meal including drinks, the Discover Cookie Service, which is familiar from long-haul routes, was carried out. In addition, about 50 minutes before landing, another drink request was made and (on request) a pack of biscuits was served.

All in all absolutely sufficient, friendly and courteous. The crew seemed present and experienced as well as attentive but not intrusive. From the in-flight sales range, which applied to short/medium and long-haul routes, I was able to gather that blankets can be bought for €9,50 in economy class on long-haul routes. However, anyone who wants to buy a Eurowings Discover model airplane with a stand for €42(!) decides my idea, even for me as an aviation fan a little too much of a good thing.

Entertainment/Wifi

The three A5 Sharklets currently in use that are a good 320 years "old" from the Lufthansa portfolio are actually aircraft that were previously also equipped with the Wifi service when the Mainline was deployed. Since the aircraft have now been in the service of Discover, this is no longer the case, at least for the time being.

Instead, you offer your own, extensive entertainment tool under the name "Eurowings Discover Onboard Cloud" on your own device. The overall appearance was appealing, clean, understandable and clearly structured. (see slide show)

trip report eurowings discover

First of all, I was extremely surprised that all content was offered free of charge. It remains to be seen whether this will be the case during the introduction (as was already the case with Eurowings) or permanently. In addition to the interactive flight map (as known from Eurowings), there was a fairly large selection from over 20 different films, 15 series and selected episodes of “ARD Tatort”, which was also announced directly after take-off. Both on the phone, but especially on the tablet or laptop with a larger screen, a great way to pass the time if you show up "unprepared" for the flight. In addition, of course, there is also the possibility to choose from a selection of games and for me personally, probably the most useful tool, was the possibility to choose from numerous, different, current journals and magazines free of charge and to download them as PDFs to your own device .

It is very much to be hoped that this cloud variant will remain 1:1 in scope and content in the long term and that this "USP" may even be expanded further (e.g. with Wifi service analogous to sister company Eurowings).

The author's conclusion:

From the pure point of view of the guest, without making an assessment of the tactical gimmicks of the group board, from which the German equivalent of the "Edelweiss" was forged, one must say clearly that "THE new holiday airline" of Lufthansa offers a good and absolutely competitive product, which surprised me positively in a few respects.

The visual appearance of the cabin in the Lufthansa outfit with the simple Discover accents looks just as chic as the more inconspicuous uniform of the crew. This is definitely good for the external image as a whole. It remains to be hoped that this line will be maintained with the foreseeable expansion of the fleet in the coming weeks and months and that no "general store" will emerge. The control of daily operations by the Lufthansa channels is a learning effect from the first attempt and clever.

This brings a certain routine, experience and calm into the ops, especially in the "ramp up phase". The seamless connection with Lufthansa worked flawlessly in the test, as did the handling both in Germany and on the Canary Islands. For premium passengers, the problem-free use of the Lufthansa lounge is another pleasant advantage.

The “casual” style announcements – “your Discover crew has prepared everything for it” or “if you liked it, why not tag us on Instagram with @eurowingsdiscover” are certainly more youthful and fresher on the one hand, but I personally like them little too "loose" and appear artificially put on and rather deterrent.

trip report eurowings discover

For me, the entire short- and medium-haul product of Discover is somewhere in the middle between Lufthansa and Eurowings within the group. If you are traveling in economy class with Discover on medium-haul routes and in the A320, you will find a new player who is on an absolute eye level with the direct competitors on the Canary Islands routes from Frankfurt (Condor and TUIFly). With the free options of the OnBoardCloud, you are modern in the field of entertainment and currently well ahead of the competition. The trend underlined by the corona pandemic, according to which more and more guests are also looking for and booking premium products in the "leisure" aviation sector, is completely taken into account by Business Class. The existing spatial separation alone (unlike the BizClass at sister Eurowings), which gives the flight more peace and quiet in the front part of the cabin (which of course is also noticeable in the front part of Economy), makes the C-Class at Discover look like a full product.

From the point of view of sustainability, I also find the idea of being able to choose food from the "normal" sales menu to be justifiable and intelligent, as this not only reduces waste at the end of the day, but may even generate additional income as business class does not consumed free food that can easily be sold in economy class. Air Berlin had already demonstrated this idea when introducing European Business Class.

After this extremely positive overall experience, I would currently prefer Eurowings Discover to the competition when booking a flight in the “premium range” and with similar flight times. Apart from the name "Eurowings" on the outside, Discover currently has little in common with the sister company of the same name, apart from their DNA. It is not a clone on short-haul routes, but a separate product, which in many areas is based more on Lufthansa than on Eurowings. It remains to be hoped for the colleagues that the decision-makers will also enjoy this project in the longer term and thus longer than was the case with the first attempt at Eurowings long-haul routes. All in all, this flight makes me very curious about my first long-haul flight with Discover on the A1, which will definitely follow in due course.

Eurowings vs eurowings discover: what's the difference.

While Eurowings and Eurowings Discover are both owned by the Lufthansa Group, their daily operations could not be further apart. They both have different air operator certificates and IATA codes, and while one focuses on low-cost short-haul routes in Europe, the other markets long-haul leisure destinations around the globe. With this in mind, let's take a look and highlight what the differences are between the two German airlines.

Created in 1993 following the merger of two German commuter airlines Nürnberger Flugdienst (NFD) and Reise- und Industrieflug (RFG), Eurowings began life with a fleet of ATR 42 and 72 aircraft. The airline later added BAe 146 aircraft to its fleet before moving on to larger Airbus A320 aircraft and even an Airbus A310. In the beginning, Lufthansa had a 24.9% stake in Eurowings which increased to 49% in 2001 before taking control in 2005 and complete ownership in 2011.

Lufthansa could not decide how to operate Eurowings

For years, Lufthansa could not figure out how it wanted to use Eurowings, which, at the time, was a mixture of Germanwings and other domestic leisure carriers. By flying a combination of short-haul European flights and long-haul tourist destination flights, Eurowings had no true identity and was in some ways competing against parent airline Lufthansa.

In 2019 the Lufthansa Group announced that all Eurowings long-haul flights would cease and that the routes would be transferred to other airlines in the group that included Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines, Austrian Airlines, and Swiss. In doing this, Eurowings could consolidate its European presence and focus on short-haul flights with Airbus A320 family aircraft. Also, now more streamlined, it would allow Eurowings to cut costs and compete better with other European low-cost carriers like Ryanair and easyJet.

The pandemic made Lufthansa consolidate

Fast forward to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Lufthansa Group moved to survival mode, looking at how it could consolidate further to ride out the storm. In early 2021, the Lufthansa Group announced that it was starting a new airline that would be focused on long-haul leisure travel. The airline was to operate similarly to Condor by working with travel agencies. More importantly, it would be a direct subsidiary of Lufthansa rather than Eurowings and would operate on long-haul and medium-haul routes.

Based at Germany's two big hubs in Frankfurt and Munch Eurowings Discover would operate more like a full-service airline with economy class premium economy and business class fare offerings. Passengers in all classes would have access to inflight entertainment of a standard equal to Lufthansa's.

The differences between Eurowings and Eurowings Discover fleets

When looking at ch-aviation.com 's fleet information for Eurowings, we can see that the airline has trimmed its fleet to concentrate on short-haul destinations. According to the data, Eurowings' current fleet of 95 aircraft is made up of the following planes:

  • 2 x Airbus A220-300s (both wet-leased from airBaltic)
  • 36 x Airbus A319-100s (eight wet-leased)
  • 53 x Airbus A320-200s (11 wet-leased)
  • 2 x Airbus A321-200s
  • 2 x Boeing 737-800s (both wet-leased)

Looking at the Eurowings Discover fleet, we can see that its 12 aircraft are more suitable for medium and long-haul operations. The planes in Eurowings Discover's current fleet are:

  • 3 x Airbus A320-200s
  • 3 x Airbus A330-200s
  • 6 x Airbus A330-300s

When summing up the differences between Eurowings and Eurowings Discover, we can say that Eurowings is a German low-cost airline. In contrast, Eurowings Discover is a German long-haul leisure airline similar to Condor.

Discover Airlines' Premium Economy boasts a pretty superior seating experience compared to standard economy class.
