serious trekkies have long fashioned copies of their favorite costumes and props, and,back in the ’70s and ’80s, a few even put together homemade knockoffs of the captain’s chair.

a full-size replica of the captain’s chair from the bridge of the U.S.S. enterprise, as seen in the original ‘star trek’ television series.

it is a commonly held view that captain kirk’s throne was built around the black naugahyde cushioning and slim walnut arms of a model no. 2405 or no. 4449 armchair produced by madison furniture industries of canton, miss., between 1962 and 1968. the late industrial designer arthur umanoff conceived the chair as part of an attempt to replicate the danish modern look, popular then. others believe it was created from scratch.

Continuing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS), QMx delivers the original Enterprise Captain’s Chair 1:6th scale authentic prop replica.

Captain Kirk, or the designated officer in command, would direct ship operations from this seat of power on the original Enterprise during its five-year mission across the final frontier of space. Developed with QMx’s Star Trek 1:6th scale collectible figures in mind, this replica of the most famous chair in TV history is authentically styled after the original set prop. It features multiple light and sound configurations and swivels on its base just like the full-size prop.

Powered either by three AA batteries (not included) or through a USB plug (cord not included), this Captain’s Chair replica has four different light and sound display settings. Press the button disguised as a computer disk and the chair cycles through the lights and sounds for: standard bridge operations, ship wide announcement, view screen scanning and red alert.

Display this classic TV icon either with the QMx 1:6th scale James T. Kirk collectible figure or on its own - it is an instantly recognizable collectible that will be the perfect desk display for any discerning Trek fan.

Product Details

The Star Trek Captain’s Chair is a replica of the most famous chair in the history of TV. Authentically styled based on the original prop, it features multiple lights and sound configurations. Just like the full size prop on TV, it swivels at the base and would have you looking like Captain Kirk himself uh… if you could sit on it, that is.

This scaled-down (1:6) replica of the famous chair features buttons and lights on both arm rests. However, only one button, located on the right arm rest, controls all the lights and sound effects. The sound effects include the ship-wide announcement, bridge operations, red alert, and others.

There is a speaker underneath the chair, right beside the battery space. The chair also has 6 foam feet at the bottom to prevent scratches.

The main seat of the Star Trek Captain’s Chair is designed with cushioning and real fabric. There’s also a volume knob, right beside the slot for USB cable charge point.

Measuring 7.5 inches in height, this captain’s chair replica requires 3 AA batteries (which do not come along with the chair) and a micro-USB cord (also not included).

Set phasers to stun.

There’s nothing wrong with sitting in your car, flipping switches and pretending to be Captain Kirk navigating Sulu and the gang through space. But now you can do it in style, because a replica of the captain’s chair from Star Trek is available.

The Star Trek Captain's Chair

The full size chair measures 42in x 39in x 41in and is an officially licensed replica, according to retailer Sky Mall.

Onboard the chair, if you’ll pardon the pun, is a series of light-up controls and sound effect switches. Hopefully the manufacturer’s been thoughtful enough to include one button for the Star Trek theme tune.

Each armrest appears to have been decked out in a luxurious quality wood, whilst the chair’s leather backing should keep you comfortable during warp drive.

It’s worth noting that the chair swivels around too, so you can pretend to spin round and listen to Spock’s advice.

The Star Trek Captain’s Chair is available now online for $2717 (£1856/€2028), but it also carries a $400 (£298/€273) delivery charge. ®

Star Trek Original Series Captain’s Chair Replica

I think that every Star Trek fan would love to have a replica of Captain Kirk’s bridge chair. Well, now you can. This Star Trek Original Series Captain’s Chair Replica is simply amazing. It is a full size repro of the original and the details are stunning.

The chair was built by Steve Horch of HMS Creative and has all of the switches, lights and even a hailing frequency sound. I don’t know about you guys, but I find this chair to have much more character than Picard’s.

During the set’s visual refresh efforts ahead of  Star Trek: Generations , that chair was stolen from the Paramount stage (a story detailed in the Generations section of Larry Nemecek’s Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion ), and was hastily replaced for production on the feature film.

The Season 2-7 command chair was not seen again for more than two decades. While there were some online sleuths on TrekBBS and on Reddit who mulled over photos of a supposed sighting of the chair a few years ago, this upcoming Propstore auction is the first confirmed time that this once-missing chair has been seen publicly in 30 years.

From the Propstore listing:

The chair is constructed from foam core covered in sand-colored polyester suede with matching vinyl side support bolsters and hard foam rubber armrests. The armrests feature several acrylic LCARS screens designed to illuminate via an original power cord from the production, which is attached to the back and appeared onscreen under the tactical console. The consoles feature color gels associated with later seasons.   While larger panels were screwed in during production, the tape around this chair was applied to secure smaller panels. The seat of the chair is also removable, allowing it to be converted for scenes set in different timelines or universes.   Following production, this lot underwent sympathetic restoration, which included fixing it to a metal plate for stability and replacing the lights to better illuminate. The headrest exhibits signs of previous repair or replacement, while the body exhibits cracked foam, lifted adhesive around the screens, scuff and flaked vinyl, and discoloration from age. Dimensions: 33″ x 36″ x 40″ (84 cm x 91.5 cm x 101.75 cm)

In the auction listing, Propstore has shared detailed images of how their team researched and screen-matched this chair to examples of its on-screen appearance, including from nicks in the outer paint to creases in the headrest.

Such a prized relic is expected to sell for a price way outside most collectors’ budgets; while estimated at a $50,000 to $100,000 price range, our expectation is that that is an extremely conservative value that will likely be far surpassed during the live auction.

You may know this, but for the record, that's the second version of the E chair. The original was stolen near the end of filming Nemesis. They had to make a replacement quickly and they aren't identical. Most obviously, the headrest and hole are not the same. You may want to tweak your model if you want replicate the one we see in 90% of the movies.  

Was that chair built from scratch for Nemesis, or was another chair modified?
