Altai Mountains

I enjoyed sitting outside at night seeing the stars and listening to the wonderful quiet and walking around in daylight, looking at the plants and the nearby great herds.… I have traveled a great deal … and this trip was one of the most educational and enjoyable.
Eco ger camps. Food. Seeing the wild horses. Feeling one with the country.… The trip exceeded every expectation I had.… The driver and guide were excellent.… The gers were comfortable.... All the food was fresh, plentiful and delicious.
I had four musts — Naadam, Przewalski's horses, riding a two-hump camel, drinking Chinggis Vodka. They were all great. Seeing the countryside from the back seat of a chauffeured Lexus was just icing on the cake.
Suddenly what seemed an empty landscape was peopled by millions of journeys. The hospitality and generosity and friendship offered by the Kazah and Tuvan families was wonderful. I had expected to feel an outsider but was welcomed into their lives.
The eagle festival was my favorite time in Mongolia. Having an eagle perched on my arm was in many ways spiritual.… I had been informed by previous visitors that a trip to Mongolia would be exceptional. It was, far exceeding my high expectations!
Traveling by four wheel drive on a no-lane freeway!! It was fantastic.… [Our tour leader] cared about our needs, and very easily adapted when the situation required. She always kept her eyes on our group and waited when the last person was walking slowly.
I liked the visits with families. Very interesting to see old traditional couples such as the eagle hunter and his wife, and then his daughter and her family who are "modern."
We have been telling all who will listen that Mongolia is the place to visit! The families we met in the gers were wonderful.… Thank you for making this experience so memorable … and did I mention FUN?
Everything went wonderfully.… [Our tour leader's] enthusiasm is contagious and he was an adept problem-solver.… I am grateful we had these specific drivers as they always knew where they were going, and could drive safely over very challenging terrain.
Very organized and it seemed to hit all the highlights.… We came back to camp every night tired and that is a good thing.… The restaurants' meals were delicious. The ger camp food was good.
Thank you, thank you! We really wanted this time be special for our family, and I am so thankful for your company in creating something unique and memorable for us!

The Great Nomad Expedition 2024

The Great Nomad Expedition - Join us for an unforgettable adventure in 2024!

Dear Adventure Seekers,

If the idea of galloping across wide open spaces beneath a beautiful blue sky excites you, then I have some fantastic news to share!

We have just returned from our thrilling 1200km ride across the Mongolian steppe, and the experience was so incredible that we've decided to do it all over again next year. That's right; the Great Nomad Expedition is back for 2024, and it promises to be the biggest, longest, and most exciting adventure out there.

Imagine crossing over 1000km of Mongolia, from the south to the north, staying with different nomadic groups and families along the way. Our journey will take us through the desert, the vast grassland steppe, and the majestic mountains, providing a glimpse of Mongolia's diverse landscapes and its rich nomadic culture.

Throughout the expedition, we will be riding on camels, yaks, reindeer, and the famous Mongolian horses, offering you a unique and authentic experience. This adventure is not for the faint-hearted; it's for those who crave something special, wish to embrace expedition travel, and seek a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Before you decide to join us, please ensure that you are a reasonably confident rider, comfortable with walk, trot, and cantering in the open.

Our journey will commence in the mesmerizing Gobi Desert, with its glowing gold sand dunes, and lead us over 1000km north, where we will conclude our expedition in the beautiful national parks with the nomadic Dukha people. This area is renowned for its lush forests, stunning mountains, pristine rivers, and diverse wildlife, including elk, bears, snow leopards, and argali.

While some days will be demanding, with about 90km in the saddle at a brisk pace, these challenges make it one of the most unique adventures in the world. The riding conditions will be like a dream come true, especially for those who love the freedom of galloping on horseback.

But it's not all about rigorous riding; there will be moments of tranquility and appreciation, where you can relish the breathtaking mountains and lakes while riding yaks and reindeer at a more leisurely pace. You'll have the opportunity to swim in waterfalls and immerse yourself in the beauty of Mongolia's wildflower-filled meadows.

Mark your calendars! The expedition dates are July 4th to 27th, 2024. We have kept the same route but made a few improvements to ensure an even better experience for you.

Now, let's talk logistics. To reach Mongolia, you can fly from the Southern Hemisphere via Seoul (South Korea), Beijing, Hong Kong, or Tokyo (Japan), with regular flights to Ulaanbaatar. Miat (Mongolian) and Korean Air are reliable carriers, and Air Asia currently offers competitive rates.

For those traveling from the northern hemisphere, Istanbul, Seoul, and Germany have regular flights to Mongolia. Miat, being a Mongolian airline, operates multiple flights daily from South Korea.

The good news is that Mongolia is now visa-free for most countries, and there's also an easy e-visa process available online. To check if you need a visa or e-visa, visit https://evisa.mn .

During the expedition, our talented Mongolian cook will prepare delicious meals even in the most remote locations. We will also enjoy traditional Mongolian feasts along the way. If you have any dietary requirements or allergies, please let us know in advance so we can accommodate your needs.

In terms of health, this trip requires a reasonable level of fitness.

The cost of this incredible expedition is $10,000 USD, covering accommodation and all meals within the expedition dates. You will also receive two custom-made Mongolian garments to wear during the journey. Please note that flights and insurance are not included.

To secure your spot, we require a 20% deposit, and spaces are limited to 10 people. Full payment must be made one month before the expedition's departure date. Payments can be made to our Mongolian Bank Account or via PayPal.

Finally, if we haven't had the pleasure of speaking with you personally yet, please tell us why you'd like to be part of this extraordinary expedition. Share a little about your riding experience, previous travels, and anything else you believe would add to our team. Honesty is appreciated, and if you need to prepare before July, we can discuss how to make it possible.

If you have any questions or queries, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.

We look forward to embarking on this unforgettable journey with you!

Chloe Phillips-Harris

What is this?

What exactly is happening? Mongolia is home to some of the last true nomadic people and way of life on earth, but it is disappearing at an alarming rate. We want to celebrate this culture and wide open spaces before its gone with one epic journey starting in the Gobi Desert to the south and traveling all the way to the forests of Siberia in the North. We want to ride into the history books and celebrate nomadic life the best way we know, with one big wild ride. A 1300km ride to be exact. The Great Nomad Expedition will cross deserts, rivers, mountains and some of the most beautiful land scape and grasslands that make Mongolia famous. This is going to be the longest multi animal expedition on earth.

Get in the Saddle

The Great Nomad Expedition is unique in the world. Not just because of the challenge and distance to covers, but because its the only event to bring together the opportunity to travel using four very different kinds of animals. The Camel for the desert, the horses for the grasslands, yaks to take you over the mountains and reindeer for the forests and taiga of the north.

Come and embrace the culture and meet the animals.

Same Same, But Different: Life for the Nomads of Mongolia Today

Many recognise Mongolia as the abode of nomads.

But the term ‘nomad’ often brings to mind images of a certain kind. And many a time, these mental snapshots portray a life seemingly detached from the broader world. Could this be because of the way the media tends to portray these nomads? Maybe. Or perhaps it's the classic scenario of "you won't know until you see it for yourself."

Yet, your mental image may not be entirely off the mark. Nomadic culture in Mongolia still thrives in gers , as they hunt with eagles and wear traditional deels . But amid these enduring traditions and rituals, a wave of modernity is sweeping across the region. Gender norms are evolving, and technology is reshaping lifestyles.

In the last five years, Nomadic Road has explored some of the remotest parts of Mongolia on numerous expeditions. Each visit has shattered preconceived notions for travellers, revealing the intricate dance between modernity and tradition.

Here’s a photo essay—a curated selection from our archives, celebrating the intricate yet straightforward, ancient yet contemporary, and traditional yet modern nomads of Mongolia.

nomadic journeys mongolia

Adaptability is second nature to the nomads. Faced with sudden sandstorms or unexpected rains, they seamlessly shift gears ( and gers ) to navigate nature's unpredictability—a trait unchanged over time. In the contemporary world, they've embraced horsepower over horses to shepherd their cattle.

nomadic journeys mongolia

A common scene in the countryside, a semblance of Mongolian nomadic life: as you overland through the expansive landlocked country, you encounter small hamlets providing access to fuel and essential supplies. During one such encounter, we met an elderly local riding his bike to purchase groceries for his family.

nomadic journeys mongolia

In a local nomadic family's ger near Orkhon Valley, Nomadic Road travellers witness a timeless gesture. Men exchange small snuff bottles, inhale their contents, and pass them back. This was, is, and perhaps always will be a symbol of mutual respect in the Mongolian nomad culture.

As natural horse riders, Mongols, as young as this kid right here, excel at rearing these mighty animals and learning to hold their reins. In an attempt to recreate Naadam, Mongolia’s national festival, we engaged local villagers in various sports such as horse riding, archery, and wrestling—markers of Mongolian nomadic lifestyle even today.

nomadic journeys mongolia

Mongolia’s nomadic life holds no bar for age. This young talent appeared during our local horse race event, insisting on showcasing his riding prowess. Who were we to deny the budding maestro?

nomadic journeys mongolia

Wrestling has a rich history deeply ingrained in the Mongolian nomadic culture, transcending sport to become a way of life—a test of strength, courage, and skill. This cultural gem was also part of the private Naadam festival we organised.

nomadic journeys mongolia

The locals united to assist us in organizing the exclusive Naadam festival, many of them hailing from nearby villages. While some arrived on bikes instead of horseback, their presence was a testament to the joy these festivities continue to bring to the pastoral Mongols.

Offering a glimpse into the Mongolian nomadic lifestyle, this image captures the quintessential scene of nomads in the countryside. Amidst a dusty open road, the shepherd finds moments of bliss with cattle as companions.

nomadic journeys mongolia

Getting to know people is often best done over a hearty meal and a campfire. During our 2023 winter expedition, we lodged in log cabins near a village. A local family hosted a Mongolian barbecue dinner around a campfire, offering a warm welcome from kids and adults alike.

nomadic journeys mongolia

The Kazakh eagle hunters of Western Mongolia inhabit one of the country's most secluded regions. For centuries, they've employed golden eagles for winter prey hunting. While supermarkets are now nearby, their way of life preserves fragments from the past. Eagle hunting continues to thrive as a vital tradition in Sagsai village, home to many skilled hunters.

nomadic journeys mongolia

Yet another thrilling aspect of the eagle hunting tradition unfolds as men vie for the coveted prize—in this case, a silk scarf belonging to a local woman.

nomadic journeys mongolia

Mongolian tradition is incomplete without archery, a cherished sport of the nomads. They are some of the finest archers in the world—adept at hitting the bullseye even on horseback.

nomadic journeys mongolia

An archer’s bow no longer discriminates. While traditionally practised by men, the current generation encourages young girls to take up archery and eagle hunting and carry the tradition forward. Who knows? Changes like these may ensure the survival of these ancient practices in the Mongolian nomadic culture.

nomadic journeys mongolia

Mongolia's throat singing is a captivating art form that’s weathered bans and Soviet-era suppression. But it resurged in the 1980s, reclaiming its place as a cherished national tradition. To commemorate the last day of our Mongolian adventure, we treated our travellers to an unforgettable sonic experience with some of the country's finest throat singers and musicians.

nomadic journeys mongolia

Preparing to hit the road after a restful night at a local ger , a gracious woman in the Mongolian national costume, deel , sprinkled milk water on our tires and vehicles. In Mongolian nomadic culture, milk and milk tea hold sacred significance. Traditionally carried out by women, this ceremony bid us a safe adieu.

Perhaps soon, men will start performing this ceremony too. Who knows?

What our customers say

We have been back home from our recent nice trip and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the assistance you gave us in putting together our custom individualized trip to Western Mongolia. Everything went well and we did enjoy our trip and appreciate the expertise from you and your staffs.

Amazing and relaxing !

We stayed at Jalman Meadows for three days and wished we had arranged a longer stay. It is very remote and tranquil, all quiet, such beautiful nature, amazing views. We hiked up mountains and on flatlands, rode horses with local nomads for half a day. We also got to visit a local nomadic family in their home with the help from one of the staff who translated, and were able to ask questions about their daily life - so interesting! The gers are cozy, beds very comfortable and we slept like babies. Good food, and also available for vegetarians. Friendly staff. This was the very highight of our trip, we just loved Jalman Meadows.

5 star rating

This place is wonderful! They have excellent food, the location is fabulous and the activities are really awesome. We did the yak cart rafting and horse back riding. I highly recommend this place! The staff is thoughtful and very professional!

Simply the best camp we visited!

This was the best camp we stayed at, the attention to detail from mirrors in the gers to being able to get a hot drink anytime, made it exceptional. The staff could not do enough for you, from lighting the fires in the ger, to loading up the bucket in the shower ger. The food was good breakfast was very good. It's situation means that it cannot be seen from the main track. The gers were the best decorated & most comfortable of our stay in Mongolia.

Exotic experience

Delightful stay in a great camp where you live in a "luxury" Ger, eat delicious food and experience life in the desert. Camel Riding was a highlight. The toilet was clean and there was also a washbasin. The Camp has its own Ger where you can take a shower in warm water. The hosts were pleasant and helpful. I would recommend a stay here highly.

Wild Simplicity in a Glamping Environment

Leading up to my visit, I was researching places to stay where I could be away from social media and technology while soaking in the Mongolian wilderness. I came across Nomadic Journeys and Jalman Meadows Wilderness Camp seemed to fit that mold...

Gobi steppe ride was much more than I expected.

Gobi steppe ride was much more than I expected. Our horses and guides were absolutely fantastic. They made us feel welcome, well taken care of, safe and secure. The scenery, the horses and our guides were all delightful. The quality of the tents and meals were above what I expected. All of the elements were there -- people, horses, scenery.

The Gobi desert is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Mongolia. You will enjoy extremely remote landscapes, no cell phone coverage and nobody else around you in hundreds of kilometres apart from some nomadic families. You will enjoy a combination of big sand hills, rocky mountains with old canyons, as well as wide forests consisting of small saxaul trees, riding all the way back to Ulaanbaatar through endless steppes. The Gobi is the fifth biggest desert in the world and is home to a wide range of animals such as antelopes and Bactrian camels, of which you will see lots! The highest part of the Gobi is 1,580 meters and the entire area has over 1.2 million km2, a true enduro paradise. The first dinosaur fossil eggs have been found at the red "Flaming Cliffs" of Bayanzag, where you will probably experience one of the most beautiful sunrises you have ever seen. Riding through the famous ‘Flaming Cliffs of Gobi ’, all in all an unforgettable once in a lifetime experience.
