Average price for Hybrid e-bikes

According to our math, the average price for a trustworthy Hybrid e-bike is 2480 $ . However, even if your budget is less than the average, you might still be able to get a top-quality Hybrid e-bike. In short, before purchasing your ideal e-bike do some research about its components, and also check for reviews online.

Overview of components

The fork installed on this bike is the SunTour NEX model. The travel on this model is mm . Bike forks are good shock absorbers and provide a smooth ride and a great experience. In short, you should always ensure you have a good fork when purchasing a bike.

When it comes to wheels, the E-SPRESSO TOUR 408 e-bike is equipped with the 700c aluminum model. These are the most popular wheels for road, aero, gravel, cyclocross, race, and gravel bikes. However, these wheels don’t perform so well when passing over obstacles.

Nothing is more important on a bike than its ability to brake properly. Merida E-SPRESSO TOUR 408 is equipped with Mechanical Disc brakes. They are much easier to maintain than hydraulic disk brakes. However, they don’t have the stopping power of hydraulic brakes.

Merida s-Presso I8-D review

Hub-geared hybrid

www.robertsmithphotography.co.uk

merida s presso tour 408

For many years, Merida manufactured bikes for other companies behind the scenes, but these days it sells them under its own name. The S-Presso I8-D is at the top of Merida’s 700C urban hybrid range. The ’08 model shown here has vertical dropouts, which explains the derailleur-style tensioner; the ’09 bike gets forward-facing dropouts instead, which is better.

  • Frame and fork: Decent and not-too-heavy hybrid frame with all the fittings you’d expect – and some you wouldn’t. But wait for the ’09 model for its improved dropouts.
  • Handling: Crisis-style cornering courtesy of the awful CST tyres undermines everything else. Change those and you’ve got a good medium-pace flat-bar commuter.
  • Equipment: The Alfine hub is the business for an urban bike, with a good range and slick operation. Hydraulic disc brakes are nice and the positioning of the rear rotor is good.
  • Wheels: Acceptable hoops – it’s just a pity the front is way out of dish.

The aluminium frame uses a top tube and down tube that have what Merida calls a ‘shotgun’ profile, looking from the underside like two smaller tubes side by side. Merida claims this provides ‘better energy absorption’. We’re sceptical, though it does help tidy the cables out of the way.

Frame fittings include the usual rear carrier rack and mudguard eyelets. Additionally there’s a ‘K-Mount’ – a dedicated frame fitting for a Hebie kickstand. The rear disc brake mounts have been moved forward onto the chainstay, which prevents the brake calliper fouling a rear rack.

The Merida’s standout component is its Shimano Alfine eight-speed hub. Gear ratios are the same as the Nexus 8, which it evolved from: 0.53, 0.64, 0.75, 0.85, 1 (oddly, not direct drive – you’re going through spinning hub internals to get it), 1.22, 1.42 and 1.62. With the 20-tooth sprocket fitted, that’s approximately the same range as an 11-32T cassette.

The Alfine's internal gears turn on ball bearings rather than bushes for better efficiency, and they are smooth and quiet thanks to a double roller clutch. Its seals are good, and it can be fitted with a Center Lock disc rotor.

In use, the Alfine hub feels more egg whisk than pepper grinder. You can shift when pedalling, although too much pressure delays the shift, particularly between fourth and fifth. If you want to alter the gearing, you can get sprockets from 16-23T (but only 18 or 20T if you use the Alfine tensioner, as on our test bike).

A downside to using the Alfine hub is that it’s harder to get the wheel out. You’ll need a spanner and you’ll have to disengage the gear cable. But that means it’s harder for thieves too, so less worry about your back wheel going walkies.

The front wheel on our test bike was true but significantly out of dish – the rim wasn’t centred between the dropouts. Your dealer could fix this at point of purchase, and you could ask him to change the CST tyres while he’s at it.

To reduce production and delivery times, we are sometimes forced to make last-minute specification changes. Please be aware that those changes might not be reflected on these product pages and images.

PROLITE 66 TRIPLE BUTTED ALUMINUM

When creating high-end aluminium frames, we use our proven PROLITE 66 (6066) aluminium, as it is incredibly light and durable. In addition, it works exceptionally well with our hydroforming technology, allowing us to create complex shapes, featuring triple butted wall thicknesses, an almost carbon-like appearance and the best possible stiffness-to-weight ratio. While lesser alloys might be cheaper, it is the ideal choice for high-performance bicycle frames.

HFS - HYDRO FORMING SYSTEM

‘C-Mount’ equipped bikes have the fixing points for a rear rack already integrated (some bikes require model specific rear rack), making fitting fast, simple and reliable.

X-TAPER HEADTUBE

Steering precision is vital to safe and confident handling, and the X-TAPER HEADTUBE allows us to significantly boost this precision. A larger headset diameter at the bottom paired with a smaller one at the top helps to deal with the strains modern riding and equipment can put on the headtube, all without adding unnecessary weight. It allows tapered forks to be fitted with ease and delivers precise and confidence-inspiring steering.

SMOOTH WELDING

This is a process we use to give a nice flat finish to our welds instead of the scaled, 'stack of coins' effect TIG welded joints often have. The welder uses the welding torch to go over the joint twice, helping to smooth out the filler material. It takes a lot of skill to do this, but it delivers strong and smart-looking frames that have the appearance of a carbon fibre frame at first look.

INTERNAL CABLE ROUTING

On the majority of our frames, we run the gear and brake cables and hoses through the frame. The cables enter and exit the frame through smooth sockets, or we use one of our other systems like SMART ENTRY or WIRE PORT to be routed through. Running the cables inside the frame protects them from the elements, gives a clean and neat look and can offer aerodynamic advantages.

SMART ENTRY

Many of our frames offer internal cable routing, where the gear and brake cables are run through the frame for maximum protection and a clean look. Some internally run cables can rattle when riding over uneven surfaces, but our SMART ENTRY system prevents this from happening. Cables, housings and brake hoses are clamped under tension to prevent noisy cable movement. All inlets are completely interchangeable to deal with any kind of cable or wire.

Shimano's Di2 electronic shifting system offers fast, smooth and reliable shifting. In particular, in the road world, it has proven itself as the primary choice when top performance is at the top of the agenda. With that in mind, we have a broad selection of performance road frames that are Di2 READY and can accommodate the electrical cable, battery and other little tweaks that the system requires.

Being able to turn your bike into an all-weather commuter that has mudguards and other fittings can be a real plus, in particular when riding on wet and perhaps muddy roads and tracks on a regular basis. To make fitting easy, some of our bikes are F-MOUNT equipped. These integrated fittings mounts make adding mudguards fast and simple. Please note that some bikes require model-specific mudguards.

Integrated mount on the chainstay to fit a Merida kickstand (or any commercial kickstand).

Similar to our F-MOUNT, where various fixing points for mudguards are part of the frame offering, the C-MOUNT equipped bikes have the fixing points for a rear rack already integrated, making fitting fast, simple and reliable. The C-MOUNTS are an additional feature that improves the day-to-day versatility by adding loading capacity to your bike, ideal for commuting and shopping trips. Please note that some bikes require model-specific rear racks.

CASTED MOTOR BRACKET

The e-bike motor mount has a sophisticated shape that is only possible to create with casting technology. Casting this piece allows us to create a complex yet lightweight shape that gives an extremely strong connection between the motor and the frame for improved performance and reliability. It also gives the bike and motor a smooth and cleanly integrated appearance.
