Culture and customs.

Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.

This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

History and government

Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history, all influencing the country we all know and love today.

Ancient history

While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.

Pre-modern history

Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious, and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture, and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.

20th century

It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.

These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.

The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.

Reflect on the historic and sobering sites of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while on an 24 day Ultimate Japan tour.

After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.

Experience Japan's historic sites on a 13 day Land of the Rising Sun tour.

Top places to visit in Japan

One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next, you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan. Wander through the streets of Tokyo on our 12 day Classic Japan tour.

If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore', which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order. Experience Osaka on our 12 day Japan Family Holiday.

The home of temples, palaces, and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Spot Geisha in Kyoto on our 9 day Japan Express tour.

4. Kanazawa

A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town, and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras. Explore Kanazawa on our 11 day Cycle Japan tour or on our 10 day Essential Japan adventure.

5. Hiroshima

Most travelers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.

6. Yudanaka

This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).

Geography and environment

Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.

Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.

Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.

Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines, and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.

Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colorful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.

If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.

What to buy

  • Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.
  • Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.
  • Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.
  • Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.
  • Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores.

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.

Sapporo Winter Festival

Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.

Hadaka Matsuri

Head to Okayama to watch thousands of men wearing nothing but loincloths vie to touch the chosen 'naked man'. It may look like a bizarre male-bonding exercise but it's actually a historic cleansing ritual dating back thousands of years. Dates change yearly.

Fuji Rock Festival

Held annually in the stunning surroundings of the Naeba Ski Resort, this outdoor music festival is huge and draws in big-name acts and local bands Thousands of music lovers flock to Naeba for three days of camping, music and partying in the summer months.

Is tipping customary in Japan?

Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.

What is the internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Cell phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. You will be expected to hide your mouth behind your hand if you must take a call in public. If you want to use your cell phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Japan?

In Japan, toilets range from high-tech bidets to standard western-style flushable toilets to squat toilets, which are still common outside the city. Sometimes you may need to pay for toilet paper, which can usually be purchased from a vending machine nearby.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

There’s never a bad time to travel to Japan but the months that see the most travelers are March, April, and May as the weather is mild and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The warm weather (with low humidity levels) of September, October, and November are also suitable months to visit Japan – you’ll even be treated to landscapes colored with oranges, reds, and browns for autumn. While winter can be cold, this is the best time for snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow festivals. On the other hand, the summer months see high humidity levels that can leave some travelers uncomfortable.

What is the weather like in Japan?

  • Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 50 to 68°F, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
  • Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 70 to 90°F depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
  • Fall (September to November): temperatures range from 45 to 68°F. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
  • Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 32 to 59°F. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .

How safe is Japan?

Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travelers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

LGBTQIA+ travelers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalized yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is Japan accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The needs of travelers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted.  Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make traveling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.

It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.

Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.

Travelers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.

If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Japan?

Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.

Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.

Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.

The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.

Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.

What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

  • 'hello' - Konnichiwa

Reviews of this Operator

We have just returned from a cosmos….

We have just returned from a Cosmos tour- Gourmet Tuscany. We stayed in Montecatini Terme and traveled from there to many wonderful places, in towns and the fabulous Tuscan countryside. We visit Vineyards for wine tastings, farms for cooking lessons and lunches and dinners in authentic Italian restaurants. All assisted by a friendly, informative tour director. First class holiday

Excellent in every respect

I recently did a 2-week "best of Italy" tour with this company. Our guide, Daniella, was fantastic, the itinerary was excellent and they catered for my rather difficult dietary requirements really well. Really happy and will certainly book with them again

A wonderrful experience

WE saw so much. The tour director Mladin was very knowledgeable and made the experience so enjoyable. The bus driver Paul was so nice and helpful. A couple of the hotels had no refrigerators to keep the water cold. We had to carry our own luggage to and from the rooms. There should have been porters to help us. Over all we had a great time.

Old South &Florida tour

Great organisation, tour guide(Kris) and driver(Tony) who went extra mile and good group of people from all over world. The hotels were excellent in New Orleans and Nashville and very good in other cities. The itinerary was well thought out with visits to Gracelands and Grande ole Oprey topping the bill. We added 3extra nights in New Orleans (giving us 6nights) which was absolutely fab and would advise anyone doing this tour that they consider some extra nights to see and do as much as you can

The tour director expertise and…

The tour director expertise and personality made the trip all the more pleasant. No stress. The local guides as well added to the beauty of this trip. They were knowledgeable and personable. I also have to mention the travelers (the group of 21). The people were friendly an accommodating. Before leaving the island of Hokkaido, take the bullet train through the Seikan Undersea Tunnel which connects Hokkaido to the Japan's main island, Honshu. Once on the main island of Honshu make your way through Matsushima and Nikko, both known for their scenic views, temples, and shrines. Customer Testimonails

I went on my trip in March 2023 and it was AMAZING. I've been planning to go to Japan for over six years and AJT was able to help me accomplish my dream. From the first time I reached out, everyone I spoke to was incredibly kind and full of knowledge. They were also very patient with my overwhelming amount of questions! The reps at the company let me know what I needed to apply for and fill out, along with due dates and timely reminders. I was also able to add on a 4-day Seoul addition with ease. Our guide, Billy, met us at the airport and was literally the most perfect tour guide. (He even assisted me with picking up my mobile wifi at the airport). I highly recommend him for your tours! He is incredibly knowledgeable about the places we were going. You could even ask him questions about places we passed and he would be able to tell you in-depth, despite it not being a part of the tour. I felt very comfortable with him and in extremely capable hands. I could go on and on about Billy, or the places we visited for days, but to sum it up, this trip, this tour is 100% worth it. AJT is incredibly thorough in helping me organize this whole trip, outside of my flights. I cannot wait to go on another tour with them! 100/10, definitely recommend!

The tour was great and well organized. The guide Billy and driver Nagato-San made all the difference. I haven’t seen a more conscientious guide than Billy. The tour gave a good flavor of different areas of Japan (I believe 19 prefectures?). We got the fully Cherry Blossom experience as well as the sites, food and culture!!! The communication was clear and concise.

I like the tour a lot especially that it was ny first time in japan. I wish all meals were included though and dotonbori included as well. Our tour guide Ms. Kim Kida was great and kind and she did her best during our tour and did above and beyond in handling some of the guests. Our tour driver Mr. Okuda was great as well and made sure our ride was safe.

Me ha ru was great at information. I learned a ton even after doing homework in advance. Japan is lovely. What needs fixed on this tour is timing (multiple over 12 hour days was insanity and even with that we lost a few items off the itinerary because people were DONE), accurate information about timing (stops were often underestimated, and our group was not particularly slow), and the included food was ... Not good (I'm not particularly a fan of japanese but why was there no ramen meal, and multiple meals involving cold rice, and food, including raw food, that was pre plated for Lord knows how long before we got there). People who already liked Japanese food were likewise unimpressed). If those things were fixed this would've been amazing, as it was it was good. Group consensus was that the imperial palace parking lot, the textile overpriced factory and the idea of going up into one of the castles could have been axed. Also, given the weather going up only to station 4 on Mt Fuji was too expensive timewise, a stop below when the mountain was out would've been preferable.

Excellent tour our guide Mr Ito was very friendly,, knowledgable and at the same time extremely responsible Hotels were all very good

Highlights of Our Unforgettable 2023 Japan Autumn Tours

We’re excited to share the highlights of our unforgettable 2023 Japan autumn tours. We had a great time with our guests, exploring Japan’s rich cultural heritage. The weather was perfect, and the fall foliage was beautiful. Take a look at these snapshots capturing the essence of our small group tours.

2023 Japan Autumn Tours

We travel with all of our guests, offering assistance whenever needed. As Americans who know Japan, understand its culture, and speak the language, we make sure that every detail is taken care of, from selecting top-notch hotels to finding the best routes and discovering hidden gems. Click here to see our small group Japan tours.

All of our 2023 Japan autumn tours started in Tokyo , with a visit to the Tsukiji outer fish market. It’s been a bustling hub of food vendors, shops, and restaurants since the early 20th century. The outer market offers an array of seafood, produce, and Japanese delicacies in a vibrant atmosphere.

Next, we headed over to Senso-ji in Asakusa. Founded in the 7th century, it is believed to be Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple. Then we ended the evening with a fun, hands-on Japanese cooking class.

japan tour february 2023

On our 15-day tours, we visited Kamakura and Nikko. Kamakura is home to the Great Buddha (Daibutsu), a giant bronze statue located at Kotoku-in Temple.

Nikko is renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The most famous being Toshogu Shrine, the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

We were fortunate enough to have beautiful weather the day we visited the Hakone Open-Air Museum with our October 15-day tour participants. This outdoor art museum was founded in 1969 and has a large collection of pieces by renowned artists such as Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso.

Another favorite with our guests is Nagoya . The fourth-largest city in Japan, Nagoya tends to fly under the radar of most tourists. The city was originally established as a castle town in 1612, just before the beginning of the Edo period.

japan tour february 2023

The Nagoya of today is modern and sophisticated. It’s a big hit with visitors because of its easy access, amazing shopping, and great dinning. It offers the big-city feel, with a small-town crowd.

Inuyama Castle

We also visited Inuyama Castle on our September 8-day and October 10-day tours. Inuyama Castle is one of the country’s oldest surviving castles, dating back to the 15th century.

japan tour february 2023

We explored the mountain village of Takayama with our September 8-day Intro to Japan Tour and October 10-day Highlights of Japan Tour . We visited an Edo-era house, tasted sake at a 300-year-old brewery, and ate some famous Hida Wagyu beef on sticks.

japan tour february 2023

The end of winter may be cold, but the air is permeated with promises of spring . February is a festive time in Japan, full of celebrations, traditional events, and fun activities. There is plenty to do, so let’s have a look at some of the best things happening this month.

1. Setsubun

2. winter sports, 3. sapporo snow festival, 4. winter illuminations, 5. kawazu cherry blossom festival, 6. plum blossoms, 7. nagasaki lantern festival, 8. valentine’s day, 9. yokote kamakura festival, 10. zao snow monsters, japan wonder travel tours , other articles you might be interested in.

Setsubun ehomaki

Have you ever thought of performing mamenaki (bean throwing) in order to keep away demons ? No? I bet you will want to try after reading this. According to the Japanese lunar calendar, February 3 marks the end of winter and beginning of spring, and on this day it is customary to ward off evil by throwing beans around the house, starting with the area furthesrt away from the entrance. If you don’t want beans everywhere around the house, it’s okay to just do it at the front entrance, and many shrines and temples also host various mamenaki events. This is a fun activity, especially for kids, with a family member (at home) or shrine representative wearing a demon mask, and people chanting “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (Demons out! Happiness/fortune in!) while throwing beans after the demon.

Another tradition is to eat ehomaki , a long and very thick sushi roll, for good fortune while facing the so-called “lucky direction” and making a wish. The “lucky direction” changes every year, so make sure to check! Setsubun is celebrated at many temples and shrines throughout Japan and is a festival you won’t want to miss.

snowboarding

One of the best things about a country with four distinct seasons is all the different sports you can enjoy at different times of the year. Winter also has no shortage of fun sports, the most popular being skiing and snowboarding. Many ski resorts are located only a few hours from Tokyo , but you can also go all the way north to Hokkaido . Ice skating is another popular activity, and it’s not uncommon to find ice rinks in big cities and beyond.

There are plenty of lesser-known winter sports gaining popularity in Japan, too. Some ski resorts offer activities such as dog-sledding with huskies or riding snowmobiles on dedicated tracks. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are fun for anyone, regardless of skill level, as a form of wintertime hiking. Ski resorts across Japan are the best places to get started on your winter sports adventure, and many offer equipment rental for the activities on offer as well.

When: all winter long

Sapporo Snow Festival

One of Japan’s most popular winter festivals is held in Sapporo and is the ultimate way to celebrate all things snow and ice. There is so much to see and do at this festival, with art, culture, sports, live music, food, and – of course – the famous ice sculptures. The events are scattered across three different locations and offer something for everyone, from relaxing strolls to adrenaline-pumping snowmobile rides. And you won’t be alone here: more than two million visitors attend yearly, making it Japan’s biggest winter festival.

When: February 4-11, 2023

Osaka-castle-illuminage

One of Japan’s winter highlights is its numerous illumination events and festivals. There are so many to choose from in just about every prefecture , and they are almost always free. Incredible for strolls, dates, and photo ops, seeing the displays of lights is a beautiful way to spend a winter evening. Some must-see illuminations in February include an LED sea of clouds at Nabana no Sato in Mie Prefecture , the frozen lit-up waterfalls at Oirase in Aomori Prefecture , and the massive Yomiuri Land Illumination in Tokyo. This barely scratches the surface, but no matter where you are in Japan, there is sure to be an illumination festival near you!

When: all winter long

Peak sakura season may be between late March and early May, but there’s a chance to see some of the iconic flowers blooming even earlier than that. Famous for its early cherry blossoms , a small town on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture welcomes visitors in late February where they can enjoy a lively festival coinciding with the blooming of some 8000 Kawazu-zakura cherry trees. People flock to the 4-kilometer-long riverbank which is lined with cherry trees, and the festival also has plenty of food, drinks, entertainment, and illuminations to keep you entertained throughout both the day and the night.

When: February 1-28, 2023

Plum blossoms

Often mistaken for sakura , ume (plum blossoms) bring the first hint of spring, and they are every bit as beautiful as the more famous cherry blossoms. These flowers represent perseverance and purity and are identified by their evenly rounded petals, differentiating them from the cherry blossoms whose petals have a cleft. They also bloom earlier and are celebrated across the country at dedicated ume festivals. You can join the festivities at parks, temples, and shrines and enjoy the sour ume fruit in foods or drinks. Some of the best spots for viewing plum blossoms include Kairakuen, a beautiful garden in Mito in Ibaraki Prefecture , Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto , and the small shrine of Yushima Tenjin in Tokyo – just to name a few.

When: mid-February to late March

Nagasaki Chukagai

There’s no better way to celebrate Chinese New Year than going to Japan’s biggest lantern festival. Originally started by Chinese settlers, it became an official event in 1994 and has since then grown tremendously. With more than 15,000 lanterns, one of Japan’s biggest Chinatowns lights up with attractions such the Emperor’s Parade, Chinese acrobatics, lion dances, fireworks, and more. The main events occur in Minato and Chuo parks, close to Nagasaki’s Chinatown . Souvenir booths and food stalls are also set up to give visitors an authentic taste of China. The lanterns and twinkling lights brighten the city and make this a festive occasion not to be missed.

When: January 22-February 3, 2023

japan tour february 2023

You may have heard that Japan does Valentine’s Day differently from most western countries, and you’re right! Japan often adopts foreign holidays and adds its own spin on them, with February 14 being no exception. Here, women give chocolate not only to their loved ones, but also to male friends and coworkers, and the entire occasion revolves more around chocolate than romance. Truly a chocolate lover’s holiday, there are many events where people can go to enjoy limited edition chocolate treats, including a popular event at Tokyo Skytree . You can also go to pray for your love life at local shrines dedicated to deities said to grant love-related wishes, such as Imado Shrine in Tokyo. However you choose to celebrate, it’s the perfect time for anyone with a sweet tooth.

When: February 14, 2023

Yokote Snow Festival

The snowy season also brings traditional snow houses called kamakura to cities like Yokote in Akita Prefecture , where this festival is held. You can see various snow houses all over the city and pray to the water deity at the snow altars inside them. Enjoy a stroll admiring the many kamakura , and you may find yourself being invited inside to partake in rice cake eating and amazake drinking – a warm rice wine with little to no alcohol in it. You can even learn how to make kamakura at Komyoji Park! Head to the river to take in the beauty of hundreds of small lantern-sized and lit-up kamakura , and enjoy some festival food as well.

When: February 15-16, 2023

Zao snow monster illumination

Witness the ice-covered, monster-shaped trees, known as juhyo in Japanese, atop Mt. Zao in Yamagata Prefecture where harsh Siberian winds create the perfect conditions for this natural phenomenon. Every year it gets so cold that the trees freeze into spectacular, otherworldly shapes, which are illuminated with psychedelic-colored lights at night. You can bundle up and take a stroll, ride a gondola or even ski right through the forest of ice monsters. If you’re not too keen on trekking through the cold, you can keep warm and admire the creatures from a cozy café or on a guided snowmobile tour. The Zao Snow Monster Festival that takes place here every February includes a parade of skiers holding LED torches and fireworks, adding to the excitement.

Complete Guide To Visiting Japan In February 2024: Weather, What To See & Do

So you’re planning your travel and wondering: is February a good time to visit Japan? Indeed, winter in Japan is beautiful, especially for people looking to enjoy snow-covered landscapes , winter sports , dips in hot springs – or just aiming to get away during a quieter month! Here, we’ll share about Tokyo weather in February, what you can do in Japan in February, and so much more!

What is Japan's weather like in February 2024?

What to pack for japan in february how to dress in japan in february, what to do in japan in february: are you looking for snow or do you want to avoid it, what to do in japan in february: festivals are not the only thing the month has to offer, what to do in february in tokyo.

What is Japan's weather like in February 2024?

Temperatures in Japan vary a lot depending on the area and elevation. The average temperature in February is around 6°C (48.2°F). You can usually expect warmer hours during the day. The Tokyo area has temperatures that go from around 11°C (51.8°F) to -1°C (30.2°F). You're usually going to enjoy pretty mild weather (as long as you wear a layer or two). Hokkaido is where temperatures can be really low (as low as -20°C (-4°F)). This region is, in fact, famous for its winter activities. If you visit Okinawa or Kyushu, you probably won't believe it's winter , since temperatures tend to be much higher.

What is Tokyo weather like in February?

What is Tokyo weather like in February?

Tokyo and its surrounding areas are the driest of Japan, in February, with a record of 70-75% sunny days. It only occasionally snows in Tokyo, so if you're visiting, don't worry about having to pack those winter boots.

What to pack for Japan in February? How to dress in Japan in February?

If you are going to Tokyo or some other of the warmer areas of Japan, there are only a few things to keep in mind when packing. 1. Pack for warmth: Winter jacket, hat, gloves, thick socks, long-sleeved shirts While the temperatures are not very low, the wind can occasionally be very strong. Make sure you bring with you some nice sweaters, hats, and if you're particularly prone to feeling cold, some heavy socks. It's unlikely you'll feel the need for snow coats, or hefty boots, but it will undoubtedly serve you to pack a wind jacket and a pair of gloves or two. Something broadly used in Japan is the so-called Heat-Tech shirts. These are clothes that are very warm but also very thin, making packing and traveling that much easier. They may or may not be available in your country, but if you want some, you'll find them virtually everywhere in Japanese clothing stores and department stores . 2. Visiting northern Japan? Bring heavier clothes. You may opt, though, to go enjoy one of the most beautiful winters once you can experience. In that case, you'll visit the northern regions of Japan. Your suitcase will definitely need to fit some more stuff. Make sure to pack your regular clothes, but also heavy snow clothing, as well as snow boots, and possibly leg warmers. Heavier socks and shirts are practically mandatory. If you go for areas famous for winter sports , regular hats and gloves might not do the trick, so pack some snow gloves and hats, as well as skiing pants and jackets. If you go to Okinawa , you can pack as if you were preparing for a slightly cooler than average spring . Temperatures in the region average around 15°C (59°F), with peaks of 19°C and lowest temperatures of 11°C (66.2-51.8°F). 3. Comfortable sneakers or hiking boots In any event, you will want comfortable footwear. As in any season in Japan, be prepared to walk - possibly much more than you are accustomed to in your home country. 4. Lip Balm (preferably with at least SPF 15) Just because it's winter doesn't mean you can escape the UV! If you have particularly sensitive skin, also consider packing sunblock in your suitcase. 5. Sunglasses Especially if you will be visiting snowy areas, glare from the snow can be quite bright indeed. Sunglasses help considerably. 6. Spare phone/camera battery Feel a little more sluggish when it's cold? So can your electronics! Low temperatures can cause batteries to discharge a little more quickly than they ordinarily would, so in order to keep powered up, bring a spare power bank to help keep your gear topped up.

What to do in Japan in February: Are you looking for snow or do you want to avoid it?

If you enjoy spending your winter surrounded by snow, you should visit Hokkaido, or the regions of Shirakawa-go and neighboring Gokayama (read on for a comprehensive list of fun activities to enjoy in February for you snow lovers).

1. Shirakawa-go and Gokayama

For those of you who enjoy spending time in beautiful snowy landscapes and sights, it will be hard to pass on these areas. These regions, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1995, are famous especially for their farmhouses, some of which are centuries old. In Shirakawa, you can visit many villages (the most popular of which is Ogimachi) in a peaceful and quiet setting. What's more, you can truly get the best out of your stay by lodging in one of the many minshuku , traditional, family-run, Japanese-style bed and breakfasts. If you're feeling more adventurous and want to see some of the county's most uncontaminated locations, take a trip to Gokayama. Its many villages are virtually untouched by large modern buildings and offer a truly unique experience.

2. Hokkaido - Sapporo

The Hokkaido region and its main city of Sapporo , are arguably the most famous and popular when it comes to all that is winter . If you enjoy winter sports , look no further. You'll find a large selection in Hokkaido regardless of your level of expertise, preference on location, or budget. But with ski resorts, we are only scratching the surface of what Hokkaido has to offer in February.

The Sapporo Yuki Matsuri ( Sapporo Snow Festival) takes place in February every year, over seven days. It's the largest winter festival in Japan, and one of the most attended ones among all Japanese festivals. In 2024, the festival will be held from February 4–11. During the festival, the vast Odori Park is the stage of tens of snow and ice sculptures, some of which are so massive in size that they resemble actual buildings. The best time to enjoy the sculptures is in the evening when beautiful lights complement them. The festival also sets up areas for bob sliding and other snow activities. All of this is accompanied by a plethora of fantastic street food and drinks.

japan tour february 2023

The city of Asahikawa in Hokkaido also holds a winter festival (second only to the one in Sapporo ) with sculptures, food, and activities. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that the city is in the truest north of Japan, and a lot of the attractions are set in beautiful plains overlooked by gorgeous mountains . Did we mention that you'll also see a show of marching penguins in the streets of Asahikawa ? This is part of the daily routine of the penguins homed at the Asahikawa Zoo , and it's one of the cutest spectacles you'll ever see.

3. Hokkaido - Otaru

Another festival held in February is the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival. In 2024, it will be held February 10-17. Also in Hokkaido, the city of Otaru is famous for this festival that lights up the streets with 120,000 candles glowing in the snow, creating a fable-like atmosphere. The people of Otaru often like to remind visitors that the festival aims at helping people leave their troubles behind and truly enjoy the moment, and unity with nature .

4. Lunar New Year

Let’s not forget, depending on the way the lunar calendar works out, that Lunar New Year is also often held in February! The occasion is celebrated in huge festivities in Japan’s major Chinatown areas in Yokohama and Kobe .

5. Other areas in Japan

There are a number of other festivals across Japan in February. These include the Yokote Kamakura (February 15-16), in Akita (where you'll spend your time enjoying great food and landscapes while sitting in a warm igloo). The Nagasaki Lantern Festival (dates change slightly depending on the Chinese Lunar calendar) is one of the most beautiful to attend. And the ‘Naked Matsuri ’ festival in Okayama (happening between the second and the third weeks of February) will probably be one of the most unique experiences of your trip. Bear in mind however, that as February 11 and 23 are national holidays in Japan (National Foundation Day and The Emperor's Birthday), the popular tourist spots are likely to become crowded.

What to do in Japan in February: Festivals are not the only thing the month has to offer!

1. Plum and cherry blossom viewing in February

The season of the sakura blossoms is usually associated with March and April in Japan, but that is a common misconception. You will be able to see cherry blossoms in February, and also the equally as beautiful plum blossoms. Plum flowers start blooming at the beginning of February, and they give a run for their money even to cherry blossoms in terms of beauty . Some of the best places to admire these flowers are: * Atami Baien plum garden in Atami * Kitano Tenmangu Temple in Kyoto * Sazuka Forest Garden in Mie * Hanegi Park in Tokyo * Kairakuen Park in Mito In Tokyo, you'll be able to catch plum blossoms in one of the most picture-perfect locations there are. The Yushima Tenjin Shrine is home of 300 beautiful plum trees, and it's open from 08:00 to 09:30.

Are you more of a cherry blossom person? While it's true that most areas of Japan start seeing the first flowers between March and April, you can admire gorgeous blossoms also beginning in mid-February. In particular, one of the best places to have your February hanami is Kawazu, south of Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture . Right near Atami station, however, is an excellent spot for viewing early-blooming cherry blossoms along the small Itogawa river .

2. Enjoy soaking in an Onsen hot spring

Let's not forget the traditional natural thermal Japanese baths, the onsen ! The experience of an onsen is terrific all year round, but in winter , it gains something special. Dipping yourself in warm, reinvigorating waters, while surrounded by a landscape of snow, has something magical that you can experience only in winter (and especially in February). If you want to know more about onsen etiquette and some of the best locations around Japan to enjoy these baths take a look at the following link.

What to do in February in Tokyo

If you're visiting Tokyo in February, there's a world of things to do.

1. Check out the illuminated streets

The streets of Tokyo light up with beautiful illuminations during winter . In this sea of lights, though, there are some illumination decorations that shine brighter than others (pun intended). The Marunouchi Illumination and Tokyo Dome City Winter Illumination never fail to impress with many fantastic lights arched around to form tunnels and embellish the already suggestive streets.

2. Strawberry picking

2. Strawberry picking

Japanese strawberries are amazing, and many people in Japan are obsessed with them. February is one of the two best times of the year to enjoy strawberries, and there are many activities in and right outside Tokyo for those of you who want to enjoy a beautiful day picking strawberries and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

3. Check out one of the February festivals in Tokyo

One of the most important festivals in Japan is Setsubun, which takes place the day before the ‘official’ beginning of Spring according to the lunar calendar (February 3). During this festival, participants throw beans at colorful demons and spirits to fend them off. Especially for those visiting with families, this can be a fun and refreshing day for kids and adults alike.

4. Enjoy Tokyo entertainment and nightlife in February

Tokyo nightlife is well known all over the world, but some things you can experience only in February. The famous Tokyo Skytree opens its last floor every Friday, in February, for what it's called Super Skytree Disco. Offering one of the most beautiful sights of the Tokyo skyline, this is truly a club night to remember.

There you have it! If you thought that the month of February would not be as amazing as March or April, to visit Japan, you probably have changed your mind. Pack your winter clothes and plan your trip to an awesome Japan in February.

今回の来日は、6年ぶりの新作『『THE SICK, THE DYING… AND THE DEAD!』

AND THE DEAD!』

Hangar 18/Tornado Of Souls(★)/Holy Wars… Sweating Bullets/Countdown To Extinction(★*)/Symphony Of Destruction(★) Peace Sells/Angry Again/A Tout Le Monde(*)/Trust/Dread And The Fugitive Mind ●キコ・ルーレイロ加入後(5曲) ・ディストピア:The Threat Is Real/Conquer Or Die!/Dystopia Soldier On!(*)/We’ll Be Back ※注:「*」印はは日本武道館(DISC 1-2)のみ。

日本武道館(DISC 1-2)の方が4曲も多く、「Countdown to Extinction」「Tornado of Souls」「Symphony of Destruction」では(事前告知の通り)マーティ・フリードマンも登場。 もうご存知の方も多いと思いますが、「Countdown to Extinction」のドラマティックなイントロに合わせ、デイヴ・ムステインがつぶやくように「Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome my dear friend, Marty Friedman!」
