Indian Railways offers travellers the option to book something called ‘circular tickets’, which are essentially tickets facilitating beginning and culmination of your journey from the same station. Circular tickets are not the regular departure-return tickets, but they are used to offer unique travel flexibility for all kinds of journeys on non-regular routes as well, particularly useful for pilgrims and sightseeing trips to multiple destinations.

So, how can one book these?

indian railway round trip ticket

Firstly, why should you buy a circular journey ticket?

Circular journey tickets are applicable for a maximum of eight break journeys and standard circular journey tickets are offered by zonal railways. These tickets cover most popular destinations according to the convenience of tourists. Tourists can refer to route, fare and other details from nominated stations in each zonal railway.

The convenience factor is supreme here as you get two options. You can either choose one of the route plans already offered by the railways or you can prepare a custom itinerary and the railways will have your circular journey tickets drawn up for you.

They also provide you telescopic rates which are much lower than regular point to point fares and you also save time and hassle of booking tickets for each leg of your journey.

How to book your circular journey ticket?

Once you are decided with your travel itinerary, you may contact the divisional commercial manager of the division of certain major station to which the journey commencing station belongs. That official or some station authorities will calculate the cost of your tickets for you and inform the station manager of the same in a set format.

Festive offer

You may then purchase these tickets by submitting this form at the ticket booking office of the station from where you wish to begin your journey. Once you have purchased your circular journey ticket, you will have to approach the reservation office to reserve you accomodation for the various laps of your journey and the reservation office will then issue you reserved journey tickets for the same.

More importantly, Southern Railways doesn’t offer any standard circular journey tickets but it does provide service for non-standard circular journey tickets according to custom itineraries submitted by passengers. A circular journey ticket is charged as two single journeys–the length of each single journey is taken as half the total distance.

A concession of 40 per cent is given to male senior citizens and 50 per cent concession is provided for female senior citizens on the cost of the tickets when the travel distance is at least 1,000 km.

How to a Make an Indian Railways Train Reservation

indian railway round trip ticket

TripSavvy / James Bascara

Confused about how to make an Indian Railways reservation for train travel in India ?

Indian Railways requires reservations on all classes of travel except general class. There are a few ways you can go about making a reservation -- online, or in person at a travel agency or Indian Railways booking counter.

Online reservations are carried out via the cumbersome and slow IRCTC Online Passenger Reservation website. Alternatively, travel portals such as Cleartrip.com , Makemytrip.com and Yatra.com now offer online train reservations. These websites are much more user friendly, although they do levy a service charge and not all trains are displayed.

As of May 2016, foreign tourists are able to reserve and pay for tickets on the IRCTC website using international cards. This is facilitated through Atom, a new online and mobile payments platform. However, foreigners must have an account that's been verified by Indian Railways. This can now be immediately completed online with an international cell phone number and email address, and by paying a 100 rupee registration fee. Also, do note that Indian Railways now allows foreigners to make online bookings under the Foreign Tourist Quota , effective from July 2017.

This step by step guide will help you through the reservation process using Indian Railways facilities.

If you intend to book online and haven't already registered, firstly go to the IRCTC website and register (here are the steps for Indian residents and for foreigners ).

Find Your Train

  • Indian Railways has introduced a new "Plan My Journey" facility on the IRCTC website. Click on it, on the top left side of the screen after you've logged in.
  • Enter the details of the station you want to depart from, the station you want to travel to, and your journey date.
  • If there are no trains running directly between the stations you've selected, you’ll get an error message and will need to try some different station names. Otherwise, you’ll be presented with a list of trains. Trains can be refined by type and class of travel.
  • Select the desired train and class you wish to travel by (and quota if relevant), and check the availability of beds. You can also see the train fare.
  • If there's no availability on your particular train, it will show as Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) or Waitlist (WL). If the status is RAC, you can still book a ticket and you’ll be given a seat on the train, but not necessarily a bed unless there are enough cancellations. If you book a Waitlist ticket, you won’t be allowed to board the train unless there are enough cancellations for a seat or bed to become available.
  • Once you've found a suitable train to travel on, click on the "Book Now" option under "Availability". You will be taken to the ticket reservation page, with the details of the train you selected automatically provided. Fill in the passenger details, and make payment.
  • A similar process can be carried out, without needing to log in, on the Indian Railways Passenger Reservation Inquiry website . Click on "Seat Availability" at the top of the screen. An Indian Railways Trains at a Glance timetable is available to assist you, although it requires quite a bit of navigating! Once you've found a suitable train to travel on, make note of its name and number.

For Reservations Online

Log on to the IRCTC website. If you already have your train details and you're an Indian resident, click on the "Quick Book" tab on the top left side of the screen, next to "Plan My Journey". If you're a foreigner, click on the "Services" option on the left side of the menu at the top of the screen, and select "Foreign Tourist Ticket Booking". Enter all the required train details. Select e-ticket (electronic ticket) and click on "Submit". Complete the electronic reservation form and then scroll down to the "Payment Option" section at the bottom of the page.

Choose how you want to pay and click on "Make Payment". If paying by international credit or debit card, select the ‘International cards power by Atom’ option under ‘Payment Gateway/Credit Card’. Your transaction will be processed and you’ll be provided with a booking confirmation. Print this out and carry it with you when you travel.

For more information refer to this IRCTC E-Ticket Booking Guide or Quick Ticket Booking Guide.

For Reservations Over the Counter

If you're booking over the counter, print out the reservation form. Complete the form and take it to a reservation office. Alternatively, you can obtain a reservation form at the office and complete it there. If you're a foreign tourist, try to go to one of the International Tourist Bureaus in major cities. These places are much more efficient and customer friendly. Be aware that you must pay with US dollars, UK pounds, Euros , or Indian rupees and an Encashment Certificate if purchasing a ticket there.

Tips for Making Reservations

  • All reservations, made both over the counter and online, are assigned a 10 digit PNR number. If you have a RAC or WL ticket, you can check the status of it on the IRCTC website by clicking on "Check PNR Status" under "Enquiries", and then entering your PNR number.
  • Cancellations happen often, particularly in the 24 hours up to departure. If you’re waitlisted, you’ll have the best chance of getting a bed in sleeper class as the majority of beds (and therefore cancellations) are in this class. Find out: Will Your Indian Railways Waitlist Ticket Be Confirmed?
  • The IRCTC website is closed for maintenance daily from 11.45 p.m. until 12.20 a.m. IST. Services are unavailable during this time.
  • The "Quick Book" option is disabled from 8 a.m. to noon. Choose "Ticket Booking" under "Services" instead during this time.
  • Bookings should be made as far in advance as possible (up to 120 days before departure), especially during the busiest traveling times. Otherwise, you’ll need to be prepared to be flexible about your travel dates and times, and class of accommodation. You may even find yourself on the waitlist, as demand greatly exceeds supply.
  • It's recommended that you book your tickets online to avoid the often frustrating Indian bureaucracy and disorderly crowd . However, the IRCTC website can be temperamental. It's common to get error messages right at the end, at the payment phase. If you happen to get an error message (such as "service unavailable"), try refreshing your browser or go back to the start and re-enter your transaction. Patience is the key here.
  • Sometimes the station name doesn’t reflect the place name (for example, the main railway station in Kolkata/Calcutta is called Howrah), so it pays to do a little research. You can do this by using the Indian Railways Trains at a Glance timetable .
  • Indian Railways operates a number of quota schemes. Last minute bookings are allowed through a "Tatkal" Quota on some of the most popular trains, whereby beds are released for reservation 24 hours in advance (previously 5 days). Foreigners can avail of a special Foreign Tourist Quota, which can also help in getting a bed during peak times. The availability of both quotas can be checked when you check the availability of your desired train on the Indian Railways Passenger Reservation Inquiry website. Taktal bookings open at 10 a.m. Follow these steps to make Tatkal bookings online.

What You Need

  • Details of train name and number, boarding and departure points, and class of travel.
  • Passport or other suitable identification.
  • Credit or debit card (for online bookings).
  • Reservation form (for over the counter bookings).

The Indian Railways offers tourists the facility of booking standard circular journey tickets that cover popular destinations, for their convenience. As a passenger, here are five things you should know.

1. A circular journey ticket is charged as two single journeys, where the length of every single journey is calculated as half the total distance.

2. Approach the Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) of the journey commencement station, once your itinerary is finalised. The DCM or the station authorities will calculate the ticket-cost based on your itinerary, and inform the Station Manager.

3. Purchase circular journey tickets by presenting this form at the Booking Office of the journey-commencement station. After purchasing the circular journey ticket, approach the Reservation Office to reserve accommodation for various laps of your journey. You will then receive the reserved ticket for the journey.

4. The Southern Railways only issue non-standard circular journey tickets.

WHAT IS A CIRCULAR JOURNEY TICKET?

If you wish to go on a pilgrimage or sightseeing trip to many destinations, Indian Railways provides the facility of booking Circular Journey Tickets. These tickets are highly discounted and offer you unique travel flexibility, as they are issued for all journeys (other than regular routes), which begin and complete at the same station.A maximum of eight break journeys will be admissible on these tickets. Standard Circular Journey Tickets are also offered by Zonal Railways. These cover popular destinations for the Convenience of tourists. The details of route, fare etc., for these tickets can be obtained from nominated stations in each Zonal Railway. You can purchase these tickets if any one of the standard routes suits your convenience. Otherwise you can inform the Zonal Railways about your itinerary and Circular Journey Tickets can be drawn up to suit your requirements.

ADVANTAGES OF BOOKING A CIRCULAR JOURNEY TICKET :

Circular Journey Tickets give you the benefit of telescopic rates, which are considerably lower than regular point to point fare. With these tickets, you not only save time but also the inconvenience of booking ticket at each leg of the journey.

BOOKING PROCEDURE OF CIRCULAR JOURNEY TICKET :

1. Once your itinerary is finalised,Write a letter describing your itinerary and approach the Chief Reservation Supervisor at your station. The Chief Reservation Supervisor will then give you a printed form and you need to fill it, you also need to mention start date to calculate end date. Now the distance will be calculated based on your itinerary.

2. You can purchase Circular Journey Tickets by presenting this form at the Booking Office. After purchasing the Circular Journey Ticket. This is just a ticket and does not guarantee reservation. So you must approach the Reservation Office to reserve your accommodation for various laps of your journey only after the Advance reservation period has commenced for that particular leg of journey. You can reserve your berth on any train according to your convenience.Fare difference may be charged in case of Duranto, jan satabdhi and other similar trains.

3. 40% concession for male Senior Citizens and 50% concession for female Senior Citizens are granted on the cost of the Circular Journey Tickets when travelling a minimum distance of 1000 kms.

Basic rules:

(1) Normal rules on Break Journey will not apply in case of Circular Journey Tickets for such circular journey which commences and completes at the same station. Return Journey on the shortest route or on a route upto 15% longer than the shortest route will not be treated as circular journey for this purpose. Circular Journey Tickets can be issued for all classes. Before issuing Circular Journey Ticket, the passenger should be asked to advise the names of maximum eight stations (excluding originating/destination station) where he wants to break the journey.

(2) Circular journey tickets cannot be purchased online.

(3) Due to implementation of GST Circular journey tickets can be issued only for SL class of travel. This is a big blow for travellers.

(4) Railway zones(except Southern issue both standard as well as non-standard circular journey tickets. Standard circular journey tickets are pre-decided routes that include popular attractions within and outside the zone, and if any of these itineraries appeal to you, you can apply for one and save out on a lot of hassles that is involved in applying for a customised route (a non-standard circular journey ticket).

Standard Circular Journey Tour Tickets Over Northern Railway:

Standard Circular Journey Tour Tickets Over South Central Railway:

http://www.indianrail.gov.in/circular_Journey_South_Central.html

Standard Circular Journey Tour Tickets Over Central Railway:

http://www.indianrail.gov.in/circular_Journey_Over_Centralrailway.html

Southern Railway does not offer standard circular journey ticket,So you can only book a non-standard circular journey ticket.

(5) A maximum of eight breaks of journey (stopovers) are permitted on a single circular journey ticket. However, a halt of less than 24 hours at a station to catch a connecting train is not treated as a break of journey, and you can take advantage of this rule by maximising the permissible gap between the arrival of your first train and the departure of your connecting train.Unlike a regular break journey ticket, you do not need the endorsement of the station master at every break of journey.

(6) You cannot repeat any section during your trip (for example, you cannot travel Delhi - Kalka, followed by a Kalka - Delhi journey later). Exceptions are made for branch lines and sections where no alternate route is possible. If, for example, you wish to travel to Rameswaram, you will have to traverse the pamban bridge twice, as there is no other route out of Rameswaram.

(7) Every circular journey ticket has a specific validity period, determined by the total distance travelled. My circular journey ticket of 4755 km had a validity of 38 days. There is no restriction on the number of days you spend at each stopover, as long as your entire trip is completed within the validity period of the ticket. The validity period for the ticket will be calculated at the sum of journey days and break journey days - journey days to be calculated @ 1 day per 400 kms distance or part thereof and break journey days to be calculated @ 1 day per 200 Kms. The ticket will be valid from the day of journey indicated on the ticket. There will be no restriction on commencing the break journey. The passenger will be required to put his signature with date on the ticket on commencement of journey.

For representation purpose only.Train route may vary.

As the distance increases the fare decreases. This is the golden rule of railway ticketing. In my case i saved about 33%.

Cancellation of Circular journey ticket:

Simply write a letter to reservation officer and present all your tickets at the counter and your CJT will be cancelled. The cancellation charges are 120inr plus clerkage of 20inr. Total=140inr

When you are on a intense backpacking budget trip across various states.Circular Journey ticket can be a saviour.
