Review: Four Seasons Private Jet

Four Seasons Hotels And Resorts Private Jet experience is taking the Four Seasons experience to another level. Put simply, if you have the means, you can now fully immersive Four Seasons Private Experience both in the air and on the ground – you never need to leave!

The Four Seasons Aircraft Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts have an all-new Four Seasons Private Jet, evoking air travel’s bygone glamour and thoughtful, guest-centric design.

Four Seasons Hotels And Resorts are not the only hotel company that offers private jet journeys. Aman hotels and Abercrombie & Kent are just two other suppliers that offer similar private jet journeys between their hotels and the hotels they partner with. But in this extremely high-end but competitive marketplace, the new Four Seasons jet looks like it will take the top spot.

The new A321LR aircraft, part of the new Airbus NEO family, is being fully customized by Four Seasons and tailored to the continually evolving vision of its industry-first Private Jet experience. This new Four Seasons Private Jet offers 48 custom handcrafted seats, where guests can socialize more easily while seated.

It offers the widest and tallest cabin in its class, with a new spacious lounge area inviting guests to socialize. It becomes the stage for a series of Four Seasons artisans to showcase their talents and craft in interactive workshops, enriching the guest’s in-flight experience.

The new Four Seasons Jet took flight in 2021, but you can still book scheduled journeys aboard the existing jet, which continues to receive exceptional guest feedback.

Ten Four Seasons trained in-flight crew, including an Executive Chef, a Sous Chef, a Four Seasons Concierge, and a Global Guest Services Manager, are committed to making the journey truly personalized.

Even the dining experience has been taken to an entirely new level, with a quality of culinary excellence, presentation, and service rarely enjoyed in the skies. Four Seasons chefs at the hotels provide local ingredients cooked fresh in the air with an aviation-code steam oven. (Commercial jet-style convection ovens only reheat, leading to typically poor in-flight meals). Petrossian caviar and Champagne are also served at any time on the Four Seasons jet. The innovative meals using fresh ingredients will be served on the finest tableware and linens, all with impeccable Four Seasons service.

When you arrive at your seat, you will enjoy a rather nice array of goodies that Four Seasons gift to you and which include a Bvlgari toiletry kit, cashmere blanket, Bose noise-canceling headphones, a custom-made leather travel journal by Moleskin with a matching ballpoint pen.

Each guest also receives an iPad before the trip, on which you can preload music and movies. You will also enjoy free Wi-Fi for fliers to visit websites and send e-mails. You can’t stream video content on board or you will mess up the connection, but they do supply a  select library of both new and contemporary films and TV shows which are available to download.

Why are these trips so special?

If you are allergic to befriending staff, pilots, and the passengers next to you on the flight, you are out of luck. These planes are designed to both provide the highest level of service whilst maintaining a fun and friendly environment, and conversation is encouraged with staff, pilots, and other guests.

Itineraries are planned to avoid long hauls. On around-the-world tours, flight times range from 3.5 hours to 8 hours, with an average of 6 hours. Pilots also land in smaller civilian airports wherever possible.

The bottom line is that this plane is an ultra-luxury shuttle between Four Seasons resorts worldwide. It takes all the hassle away from travel, and prices include all accommodation, meals, drinks, ground transportation, and even custom excursions are inclusive.

Four Seasons wants to take you on the ultimate private plane trip — starting at $130,000

Tanner Saunders

It's one thing to take a business-class flight to one of the world's most popular hotels. But it's an entirely different experience to take the private plane of one of the world's most popular luxury hotel brands and crisscross the world staying at its best resorts.

Well, not for Four Seasons — and not for those with tens of thousands of dollars to drop on what, for most people, would be considered beyond the realm of even a once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

If you're wondering what I'm talking about, let me introduce you to one the most aspirational trips a person living on this planet can take: the Four Seasons Private Jet Experience .

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

What is the Four Seasons Private Jet Experience?

Four Seasons knows luxury — and back in 2015 it took the concept to new heights, literally, when the Canada-based hotel company started curating ultra-luxury regional and around-the-world trips to its various properties on board a private jet. Guests on these trips travel together to world-famous destinations but each individual traveler or group can have elements specifically tailored to their needs and desires. Four Seasons tosses in "a few surprises along the way."

four seasons flight tour

Since the program launched, hundreds of travelers with very, very deep pockets joined Four Seasons for "exclusive, often life-changing experiences" that include flights between each hotel or resort on the jet, accommodations at a Four Seasons hotel or resort (or luxury accommodations selected by the Four Seasons team in more remote locations).

The luxe experience also includes door-to-door luggage handling, assistance with visas and travel forms alongside expedited customs and security (when available), an onboard doctor for any health issues or emergencies, a dedicated guest service manager to help with any and every need (trust me, you're paying for it!) and even an onboard executive chef, Kerry Sear, to serve world-class meals 40,000 feet in the sky.

What is the Four Seasons plane like?

The Four Seasons Private Jet Experience takes place on a custom Airbus A321LRneo. The plane has 48 lie-flat seats with 6 1/2 feet of personal space and a plush ottoman on the opposite side for extra legroom or a convenient seat for a fellow traveler to stop by and chill for a bit.

The chairs also have fold-out trays for meals from chef Sear or to use as a handy workspace while in flight.

While traveling between destinations, guests can visit the onboard lounge for "intimate workshops, educational demonstrations or culinary surprises" hosted by Four Seasons "craftspeople" to help pass the time. (And wouldn't you rather learn how to craft a perfect mojito instead of watching "Harry Potter" for the 47th time anyway?)

four seasons flight tour

The plane has a one-to-six crew-to-passenger ratio with the inflight team having trained at Four Seasons University to master the art of service so your favorite drinks and snacks will be waiting for you as soon as you get on board.

If that's not enough, Four Seasons designed the plane with "champagne and caviar" as its inspiration.

And of course, there's a bathroom on the plane with a full-length mirror, leather bench, luxury amenities and (probably) the softest toilet paper in the sky.

TCS World Travel sells and operates each journey on behalf of Four Seasons and the flights are operated by Titan Airways Limited.

Where does the Four Seasons Private Jet Experience go and how much does it cost?

four seasons flight tour

The real question is where doesn't the Four Seasons Experience go? And then there's the bigger question: How much can this possibly cost? Let's me just say these trips aren't cheap and each experience is priced differently — but each per-person price could easily buy you a couple of average-price cars (and probably a pretty OK house where I grew up in Texas).

Each year, the company releases a set of itineraries that literally span the globe, from around-the-world trips that hit multiple continents to themed itineraries that visit ancient sites like Petra and the Pyramids of Giza or adventurous destinations like Machu Picchu and even Antarctica on the same trip.

Here’s how much it will cost you to charter a Four Seasons private jet

W ant to take luxury travel to new heights? Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts is offering the opportunity to charter their custom-designed private jet for a limited time in 2024. But this exclusive experience comes with an eye-watering price tag.

The sky-high costs

For approximately $115,000 per day, up to 48 guests can enjoy the ultimate in personalized air travel aboard the Four Seasons private jet. This Airbus A321neoLR aircraft has been outfitted with 48 flatbed leather seats, a luxurious lounge area, and an exceptional in-flight dining experience curated by an executive chef.

The cost covers the private jet flights, all onboard services like gourmet meals, personal iPads and Bose headphones for entertainment, and the expert crew of 10, including pilots and dedicated cabin attendants. You can even opt to add an onboard physician, tour manager, or extra crew at additional expense.

However, the $115,000 daily rate is just for starters. All ground transfers, hotel accommodations, tours, activities, and most meals at your destinations come as extra costs to be arranged separately or through Four Seasons.

Where can you jet off to?

Wondering what kind of dream itinerary could justify such premium pricing?

Four Seasons suggests incredible travel experiences like the ultimate “set-jetting” adventure to visit filming locations of popular movies and TV shows shot at their properties. Or perhaps a global sporting event tour, catching the Summer Olympics in Paris, car racing in the Netherlands, football matches across Europe, and the U.S. Open tennis tournament. Another option is an epic holiday celebration spanning multiple European Christmas  markets, a ski trip in the French Alps, and a New Year’s Eve finale in an exotic locale like Dubai or Finnish Lapland.

The Four Seasons team will work with your group to fully customize the private jet itinerary based on your interests and budget. You can even choose to recreate one of their pre-designed Private Jet Experience routes, like Ancient Explorer or International Intrigue , but on your preferred dates.

While the nightly lodging costs at Four Seasons luxury hotels and resorts will add up quickly, the true luxury lies in the seamless, tailored travel experience without the hassles of commercial flights and standard tour groupings.

The chartered Four Seasons private jet can fly up to 4,600 miles without refueling. Its advanced air filtration system refreshes the cabin air every few minutes, removing 99.9% of particles for maximum health assurance. Of course, the privilege of complete privacy and the ability to control every aspect of the travel experience from the group size to the itinerary are also prime draws for Four Seasons’ ultra-wealthy clientele.

Bottom line

Chartering the Four Seasons private jet offers an exclusive and customized travel experience with luxurious amenities for up to 48 guests but comes at a hefty price tag of $115,000 per day, not including ground transfers, accommodation, or most meals. This luxury is ideal for those seeking ultimate privacy, control over their itinerary, and the seamlessness of avoiding commercial flights and standard tours. According to Four Seasons, this opportunity is only available between August 4 to 26 and December 20 to 27, 2024.

The A321 private jet experience

While we already know a lot about the long-range capabilities of the A321neo and the A321LR, its the Four Seasons' inflight experience that is stealing the show. On board, the private jet has an experienced flight crew, which includes a dedicated Concierge, Executive Chef, and Journey Physician.

"The new Airbus A321neo-LR aircraft has been fully customised to Four Seasons exacting specifications, with input from previous Four Seasons Private Jet passengers.  Offering the widest and tallest cabin in its class, the 48-seat interior has been configured for even greater comfort with as much space as possible for guests to spread out and makes themselves at home." -Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts

Who's actually flying the aircraft?

It wouldn't be too surprising to learn that Four Seasons doesn't have an AOC (Air Operators Certificate) of its own. But with our website's clear aviation focus, we wanted to see if we could find the actual aircraft registration and the operator behind the service. While it took a little bit of digging, we think we found some of the behind-the-scenes information.

Four Seasons' private jet has partnered with TCS World Travel to provide these luxury excursions. In turn, TCS World Travel partners with Titan Airways to arrange the actual flights. Titan Airways is a UK-based wet lease operator based out of London Stansted Airport. We know that Titan Airways took delivery of a brand new A321LR jet from Airbus on October 26th. The aircraft is registered as G-XATW.

This aircraft information was confirmed by a Four Seasons spokesperson.

Four Seasons Hotel Moscow, Russia – Review

Being first has its privileges.

four seasons flight tour

Moscow at night, as seen from an upper floor of the Four Seasons Hotel

MOSCOW – Sometimes, life is a series of firsts: my first car, my first trip to Russia, and checking in at the brand new Four Seasons Moscow only to find out that I was the very first guest.

After a somewhat long but pleasant drive from Sheremetyevo airport in one of the hotel’s BMW 7 Series, during which my driver, Victor, pointed out some interesting sites, I arrived at the new Four Seasons, situated next to Red Square, in the heart of the city.

The brand-new building is a faithful copy, down to the dual façade, of the Hotel Moskva, built in the 1930s with Joseph Stalin’s approval. That hotel, designed by Alexey Shchusev, had over 1,000 rooms and served as a base for important visitors as well as to the Soviet Union’s leadership. Today the hotel, which occupies the same massive block as the Moskva did, has far fewer rooms, more retail space, and includes condos.

DSC_0807

A liveried bellman greeted me in English by name and escorted me to the front desk, where two clerks appeared to be in a celebratory mood. After completing the brief formalities I found out the reason, I was the first guest to actually check in. It was Thursday, the day before the formal opening. A hand-written card from the hotel’s ebullient general manager, Max Musto, confirmed my “first guest” status later on.

The hotel’s 180 rooms have 40 different layouts, and even the smallest is generously sized at a spacious 40 square meters (431 square feet). My Premier Room, located on the hotel’s tenth floor, was over the main entrance and in the wing with arched windows, looking out over Manezhnaya Square. (The story goes that, when the building was first designed, the architect submitted a drawing of the façade to Stalin with each of the two wings having a different design, expecting him to choose one. Stalin is said to have put his signature exactly in the middle and, because everyone was afraid to tell Stalin he had not made a selection, it was decided to construct the building with one wing with larger windows and a more ornate façade and one wing with smaller windows and simpler details.)

My room was large enough to be considered a junior suite. It was divided by a partial wall housing a flat screen television that could be viewed from the bed as well as from the living room area.

Pursuitist’s Week In Luxury: Four Seasons Moscow, Jimmy Choo and Diane Von Furstenberg

Here are the top five hottest news stories in luxury within the past days. Pursuitist chose these as they have the greatest depth and breadth, those that combine wide popularity and with trend possibility. Read on!

The Four Seasons Moscow opens on October 30, 2014.

If the building looks familiar, it is because the building appears on the label of Stolchinaya Vodka, and on an historic Russian postage stamp —  It was the old Hotel Moskva, opened in 1935 — demolished in 2004.  Five years later, a replica of the Hotel Moskva was completed, and houses The Four Seasons, very close to Red Square. It has five food and drink venues including Italian and Russian restaurants, a 24-hour fitness center, a glass-roofed lap pool and a 32,292 square foot spa, which will open early next year.

The 180 rooms and suites all have floor-to-ceiling windows, many have balconies, with marbled bathrooms and Roberto Cavalli amenities. Each has an inroom iPad allowing you to book spa appointments and order room service. House automobiles (BMW 7 Series) are equipped with free WiFi and an iPad.

Jimmy Choo Goes Public .

On a crisp  Friday  morning, in mid October   Jimmy Choo  became the first luxury shoe company to make an IPO move, listing about a quarter of its shares on the London Stock Exchange for 140 pence ($2.25),valuing the company at about 546 pounds ($874 million), $63 million more than Labelux paid to acquire the company in 2011. Jimmy Choo was founded in 1996 by Jimmy Choo and  Tamara Mellon , alongside Choo’s niece Sandra Choi, who has served as creative director of the label since its inception.

Much could happen to the brand, or to any brand, after it goes public. Their stated aspirations are to move into Asia, as they recognize the wealth in this market. Right now, they are adding 10-15 stores each year. The company may hope to create investment capital to fuel their ecommerce platform to become even more multinational, multilingual, innovative, and personalized than it is already.

It is a competition show centering on the fashion designer’s quest to find a global brand ambassador for her label. It promises to provide an intimate, back-office view of the internal workings of von Furstenberg’s empire, as she and her team test a group of ambitious young women. Filmed in New York, the contestants will be jet-setting to various locales, to DVF sponsored events, and working on multi-million dollar campaigns, as well as producing charity events.

Viking Cruises To Start Ocean Cruises In May 2015.

The First Ocean Star will go on Maiden Voyage, May 2015.  Los Angeles Viking Cruises recently announced the launch of its ocean product line, Viking Ocean Cruises ( www.vikingcruises.com/oceans ) marking the introduction of the travel industry’s first new cruise line in nearly a decade.

Developed from the ground up to return the focus of cruising to the destination, Viking Ocean Cruises will begin sailing in May 2015 with its first vessel— Viking Star —embarking on maiden voyages in Scandinavia and the Baltic; and the Western and Eastern Mediterranean. Viking Cruises has expansion plans in both the ocean and river cruise categories, with a second ocean ship on order for delivery in 2016 and conditional orders and options for four more additional ocean vessels.

“It is our view that in the race to build bigger ships, many cruise lines have lost sight of the destinations to which they sail,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises. “With our new ocean cruises, we are applying the same principles behind our award-winning river cruises to our itinerary and ship design; privileged-access excursions; and onboard experiences to make destinations the true focus.”

The Waldorf Astoria, Manhattan, is sold to China’s Anbang Insurance Group – With Interesting Consequences.

Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. (HLT) , the largest publicly traded hotel operator, is considering buying high-end urban hotels or resorts to spend $1.95 billion in proceeds from the sale of  Manhattan ’s Waldorf Astoria hotel.

Hilton, which earlier this month agreed to sell the property on Park Avenue to  China ’s Anbang Insurance Group Co., is looking at hotels in U.S. gateway cities and resort properties, Chief Executive Officer Christopher Nassetta said.

Hilton said it will have more specific details on assets and markets in the next 60 to 90 days. The company is seeking to spend the Waldorf proceeds in a 1031 exchange, to defer the payment of capital-gains taxes.

Hilton’s sale of the 83-year-old Art Deco building, which occupies an entire block in midtown Manhattan, is the largest ever for a U.S. hotel, according to research firm Lodging Econometrics.

The Rick Steves guide to life

Travel mogul. philanthropist. legal weed champion. the real rick steves is so much more complex than who you see on tv..

four seasons flight tour

EDMONDS, Wash. — At first glance, it is hard to tell that Rick Steves is protesting.

In the center of his hometown, America’s favorite travel host is perched on the edge of a fountain roundabout engaging in some friendly civil disobedience. As cars circle the intersection, Steves smiles and waves, looking more like an Elf on a Shelf than an angry picketer. This is his way of reminding people he wishes they’d stop driving here.

Steves’s family moved to Edmonds when he was 12, and the 68-year-old is still happy to call it home. Rather than relocate to his beloved Europe, he dreams of bringing some European sensibilities to the edge of the Puget Sound, less than 20 miles north of Seattle.

When he’s not traveling around Europe, writing about Europe or running his multimillion dollar European tour company, the prolific TV host and author likes to squeeze in some local activism. The roundabout routine is his push to block off Edmonds’s very American Main Street for pedestrians. If you squint at it, you can see what Steves sees: this would be the perfect place for a lively town square.

“I like a lot of things about Europe but I love the urban energy of Europe. I love the piazza,” Steves said in a wistful tone you might recognize from PBS. “We don’t have a piazza.”

Unfortunately for Steves, the voting majority of the city does not love the idea of parking their SUVs farther away to shop. So despite his Boy Scout enthusiasm, the most famous man in Edmonds must keep up the perch-and-wave. This is not his only crusade.

Spend any amount of time with Steves, and you’ll encounter a total ham who loves a zany bit. But if you ask him about serious issues like car-free zones, he’ll bring up other causes that are dear to him: affordable housing, supporting the arts, creating senior centers for the elderly to age with dignity.

He’s anti-Trump and pro-cannabis. He does not care if that is bad for business.

The average Rick Steves fan has likely missed this side of him. On TV they see an always-sunny history lover who makes going abroad feel approachable for the average American. That’s an incomplete picture, like thinking you know Paris because you’ve seen the Eiffel Tower on YouTube.

Meet him in Edmonds, and he’ll fill in the rest.

It may look like a lot of gallivanting, but being Rick Steves takes a lot of work.

He spends three months of the year overseas, researching, writing, recording, refining tours, updating guidebooks. If he’s not planning or producing content, he’s often doing promotional events across the United States. This year Steves is celebrating the 40th edition of his first book, “Europe Through the Back Door.” Over the course of his career, he’s built a privately held company that generates $120 million in revenue a year, published 110 books, filmed 12 seasons of “Rick Steves’ Europe” and produced more than 750 podcast episodes.

“It’s just like coordinating a three-ring circus,” Steves said.

That is: really fun, sort of exhilarating and extremely complicated. To pull this off, Steves does not observe the French 35-hour workweek. He’s a workhorse with a reputation for keeping a frenetic pace year-round.

“It’s more of an American work culture,” Amy Duncan, Steves’s communications director, told me. “He’s an unapologetic capitalist but he is also a socialist.”

He makes enough money to fly first class, but he only sits in economy, claiming he doesn’t mind being cramped.

“It never occurred to me that I’m suffering,” he said. “As long as I’ve got an aisle and a seat that reclines, I’m happy.”

Actually, Steves believes airlines should only have one class. It’s part of his egalitarian worldview. He’s also anti-points and anti-miles, refusing to sign up for airline loyalty programs because he believes they bully us into complicating our lives.

Steves also enforces a self-imposed “ carbon tax ” on his tour company, which takes more than 30,000 people to Europe annually. For every customer, Steves invests $30 to atone for emissions created by their flights between the United States and Europe. Last year, that added up to $1 million donated to a portfolio of organizations, Steves said.

“I don’t need to be a slave to the quarterly profit statement. I want to be around and profitable in 10 years from now in a world that you can travel in that’s stable,” Steves said. “This is a smart investment and it’s an ethical expense that I should pay for.”

Rick Steves will tell you he’s motivated by making money; the more he can earn, the more good he can do with it.

“Vicarious consumption, that’s one of my things,” Steves said.

After amassing a windfall from the 2001 George W. Bush tax cuts for high earners, Rick Steves donated $1 million to support the local symphony and performing arts center. In 2005, he used retirement savings to buy a 24-unit apartment complex for the local YWCA’s use as transitional housing for women and children. He figured he’d eventually sell the complex and live on the earnings. About a decade later, he changed his mind and donated the complex valued at $4 million.

He also gave more than $4 million to help build the Edmonds Waterfront Center, a vibrant gathering place for seniors where his daughter had her wedding in 2021. And he gave another $2 million for a similar center in the nearby city of Lynnwood, which broke ground in mid-April .

“Rick puts his money where his mouth is,” said Nancy Leson, a former Seattle Times food critic who used to let Steves’s daughter babysit her son. She’s appreciated his regular presence in the community, like hosting events for local politics at his house and shopping at the farmers market .

“He changed travel,” local resident Karen Howe said on her way into the Waterfront Center with a friend. She’s used Steves’s guidebooks for years. “He’s introduced us to places that most of us would never think of going.”

Rick Steves hasn’t won his piazza battle, but he has brought European touches to Edmonds. At the Rick Steves’ Europe headquarters, there’s an E.U. flag hanging from the mocha brick facade. And gargoyles that drain rainwater, just like at the Notre Dame cathedral.

“Gargoyles scare away evil spirits,” Steves points out, unable to suppress his inner tour guide.

Here Steves employs more than 100 people: editors, audio producers, tour specialists and cartographers such as Dave Hoerlein, his first employee. That’s excluding the fleet of guides and drivers he contracts across the pond to shepherd tour customers.

Inside, he bounds through a maze of cubicles, his neck craned forward, always at an eager pace. His 6-foot frame appears leaner than previous seasons of his life, but his signature look is familiar. No, not khakis and a button-down. That’s vintage Rick. These days, he wears dark jeans and a button-down, plus a thin scarf and leather sneakers.

During a day of meetings, Steves’s fjord-blue eyes lit up at the minutia of the business. He went over new maps with Hoerlein. He and longtime co-author Cameron Hewitt addressed problems like finding a “less glitzy” stop on the Amalfi Coast that’s not Sorrento. They discussed whether a place is worth visiting after it’s gotten too popular, and Steves indulged in some gallows humor.

“It’s going to be like holding the corpse of a loved one who just died,” he said.

His critics argue the “Rick Steves Effect” can turn a charming village, restaurant or museum into a tourist magnet. Matthew Kepnes, the travel writer behind the blog Nomadic Matt , points to the Swiss town Zermatt, which he says Steves put on the map, and has since dealt with overtourism . You’re bound to bump into groups with Rick Steves guidebooks in Italy’s increasingly crowded Cinque Terre.

Whether Steves is actually to blame for changing a place is up for debate. There are plenty of destinations he’s covered that haven’t been inundated with swarms of Americans (see also: Gdańsk).

Steves says he assesses whether a place wants tourism, if it can handle it gracefully. If they don’t or can’t, he may mention it but not promote it.

He has faith — maybe too much — that his clients share his values.

“Does [my work] change the personality of a town? It can. Am I a dramatic impact on Europe? No,” he said.

“There’s a handful of places I really promote aggressively that I’ve had a serious impact on, but otherwise ... my travelers are the kind of people that take only pictures and leave only footprints ... they’re good travelers.”

You don’t have to spend much time in Edmonds to see why Rick Steves never considered leaving.

The city — population roughly 42,000 — sits on a majestic inlet. You can get to a major international airport in about an hour. The community is so courteous, it has an “umbrella share” program in case people forget their own on a rainy day. As Steves walks around town, he greets people by name. He lives within walking distance to both his favorite diner and a pétanque court, the French answer to Italian bocce. He plays bongos at his church on Sundays.

In 1967, Richard “Dick” Steves moved the family here because he was worried about Rick Junior.

“I was hanging out with dangerous kids and going down the wrong trail,” Steves said. Seriously.

His dad, an Army veteran, got by in the upscale suburb as a piano technician and importer. When Steves was 14, his parents dragged him on a work trip to Europe to visit piano factories; it was a radical experience that sparked his lifelong passion for travel.

Back in Edmonds, Steves started teaching piano, eventually turning his savings into trips abroad of his own — not only to Europe, but Turkey, Nepal, Afghanistan. He went to college nearby, earning degrees in European history and business from the University of Washington, where he played in the Husky Marching Band.

After graduation, Steves figured he could keep up his routine: give piano lessons during the school year, then travel during the summer. He started teaching travel classes in the same recital hall where his piano students performed. This was back when there was no internet and few guidebooks to consult for trip planning.

The classes were a hit. At 25, Steves turned his lecture materials into a 180-page book, and self-published “Europe Through the Back Door,” in 1980.

Four years later, he hosted his first European minibus tour group, serving as both bus driver and guide.

His businesses have evolved — his bus tours now take up to 28 travelers, a number Steves says is a sweet spot between making the tour more affordable yet enjoyable for customers and profitable for the company. But his mission has remained the same: to be the best resource for European travel and help Americans travel better.

“I just focus on that and I love it,” he said. “It takes my life out of balance — which is not good — but it lets me do a lot of stuff that I believe in and that’s good.”

Steves has been open about the challenges of being a travel mogul. As built his empire, he was also raising a family. Being “married” to both took a toll. In 2010, Steves and his wife, Anne, divorced after 25 years of marriage.

Up the hill from his junior high, Rick Steves’s modest beige home offers a window into his many lives. There are family photos on the walls, from older relatives to his baby grandson, Atlas. He hosts political fundraisers on the sprawling deck. A painting of Kerala, India, nods to one of his favorite countries (people forget Steves did four editions of “Asia Through the Back Door”).

Next to his grand piano, there’s a stuffed creature that Steves calls his “Silver Fox” baring its teeth and wearing novelty sunglasses with cannabis leaves on the lenses — a nod to two of his interests: taxidermy and marijuana activism.

“It’s the civil liberties … it’s the racism … everything about it is wrong,” he said of keeping weed illegal.

As for the toothy fox, Steves doesn’t do typical souvenirs anymore, but he makes an exception for stuffed animals.

“The wooden shoes and the pewter Viking ships are so obvious,” he said. “I like to do something a little more organic and a little more striking and it takes me back there — I like it.”

He’s a very good piano player. He can also play the sousaphone and the trumpet — which he did regularly during the pandemic, performing taps for his neighbors at sunset.

Covid-19 was a nightmare for the travel business, but a miracle for Rick Steves’s love life.

After running in the same social circles for years, he and Shelley Bryan Wee, a prominent local bishop, started dating at the end of 2019. They had a lot in common. Both are progressive Lutherans. Both are divorced with adult children. But neither worked a typical 9-to-5, and one of them spent three months of the year in Europe.

Then lockdown happened. Steves, who couldn’t remember if he’d ever had dinner in the same place 10 nights in a row, spent 100 nights at the same table with Wee. It solidified their relationship.

“Shelley is a constant,” Steves said. He still struggles with the balancing act between work and love.

When the stars align and they’re both in Edmonds, Wee cooks, and Steves plays sous chef. They walk Jackson, Wee’s labradoodle, creating their own version of the passeggiata, Italy’s traditional evening stroll. They play table tennis before dinner.

When the world reopened, they started traveling together. They’ve made time for a few big vacations: a trip to Morocco, where they were caught in a windstorm that blew the windows out of their car; a luxury barge cruise through Burgundy, France, “that was embarrassingly expensive,” Steves confessed, followed by a week hiking in the Swiss Alps; and another hiking trip between remote lodges on Mont Blanc.

Before their first trip, Steves edited the contents of Wee’s suitcase, because packing light is part of his philosophy.

“What do you say?” she asked. “You’re talking to Rick Steves.”

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Final Rule Requiring Automatic Refunds of Airline Tickets and Ancillary Service Fees

Rule makes it easy to get money back for cancelled or significantly changed flights, significantly delayed checked bags, and additional services not provided

WASHINGTON – The Biden-Harris Administration today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a final rule that requires airlines to promptly provide passengers with automatic cash refunds when owed. The new rule makes it easy for passengers to obtain refunds when airlines cancel or significantly change their flights, significantly delay their checked bags, or fail to provide the extra services they purchased.

“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them - without headaches or haggling,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . “Our new rule sets a new standard to require airlines to promptly provide cash refunds to their passengers.”

The final rule creates certainty for consumers by defining the specific circumstances in which airlines must provide refunds. Prior to this rule, airlines were permitted to set their own standards for what kind of flight changes warranted a refund. As a result, refund policies differed from airline to airline, which made it difficult for passengers to know or assert their refund rights. DOT also received complaints of some airlines revising and applying less consumer-friendly refund policies during spikes in flight cancellations and changes.

Under the rule, passengers are entitled to a refund for:

  • Canceled or significantly changed flights: Passengers will be entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled or significantly changed, and they do not accept alternative transportation or travel credits offered. For the first time, the rule defines “significant change.” Significant changes to a flight include departure or arrival times that are more than 3 hours domestically and 6 hours internationally; departures or arrivals from a different airport; increases in the number of connections; instances where passengers are downgraded to a lower class of service; or connections at different airports or flights on different planes that are less accessible or accommodating to a person with a disability.
  • Significantly delayed baggage return: Passengers who file a mishandled baggage report will be entitled to a refund of their checked bag fee if it is not delivered within 12 hours of their domestic flight arriving at the gate, or 15-30 hours of their international flight arriving at the gate, depending on the length of the flight.
  • Extra services not provided: Passengers will be entitled to a refund for the fee they paid for an extra service — such as Wi-Fi, seat selection, or inflight entertainment — if an airline fails to provide this service.

DOT’s final rule also makes it simple and straightforward for passengers to receive the money they are owed. Without this rule, consumers have to navigate a patchwork of cumbersome processes to request and receive a refund — searching through airline websites to figure out how make the request, filling out extra “digital paperwork,” or at times waiting for hours on the phone. In addition, passengers would receive a travel credit or voucher by default from some airlines instead of getting their money back, so they could not use their refund to rebook on another airline when their flight was changed or cancelled without navigating a cumbersome request process.

The final rule improves the passenger experience by requiring refunds to be:

  • Automatic: Airlines must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops.
  • Prompt: Airlines and ticket agents must issue refunds within seven business days of refunds becoming due for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.
  • Cash or original form of payment: Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in cash or whatever original payment method the individual used to make the purchase, such as credit card or airline miles. Airlines may not substitute vouchers, travel credits, or other forms of compensation unless the passenger affirmatively chooses to accept alternative compensation.
  • Full amount: Airlines and ticket agents must provide full refunds of the ticket purchase price, minus the value of any portion of transportation already used. The refunds must include all government-imposed taxes and fees and airline-imposed fees, regardless of whether the taxes or fees are refundable to airlines.

The final rule also requires airlines to provide prompt notifications to consumers affected by a cancelled or significantly changed flight of their right to a refund of the ticket and extra service fees, as well as any related policies.

In addition, in instances where consumers are restricted by a government or advised by a medical professional not to travel to, from, or within the United States due to a serious communicable disease, the final rule requires that airlines must provide travel credits or vouchers. Consumers may be required to provide documentary evidence to support their request. Travel vouchers or credits provided by airlines must be transferrable and valid for at least five years from the date of issuance.

The Department received a significant number of complaints against airlines and ticket agents for refusing to provide a refund or for delaying processing of refunds during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. At the height of the pandemic in 2020, refund complaints peaked at 87 percent of all air travel service complaints received by DOT. Refund problems continue to make up a substantial share of the complaints that DOT receives.

DOT’s Historic Record of Consumer Protection Under the Biden-Harris Administration

Under the Biden-Harris Administration and Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has advanced the largest expansion of airline passenger rights, issued the biggest fines against airlines for failing consumers, and returned more money to passengers in refunds and reimbursements than ever before in the Department’s history.

  • Thanks to pressure from Secretary Buttigieg and DOT’s flightrights.gov dashboard, all 10 major U.S. airlines guarantee free rebooking and meals, and nine guarantee hotel accommodations when an airline issue causes a significant delay or cancellation. These are new commitments the airlines added to their customer service plans that DOT can legally ensure they adhere to and are displayed on flightrights.gov .
  • Since President Biden took office, DOT has helped return more than $3 billion in refunds and reimbursements owed to airline passengers – including over $600 million to passengers affected by the Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown in 2022.
  • Under Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has issued over $164 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations. Between 1996 and 2020, DOT collectively issued less than $71 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations.
  • DOT recently launched a new partnership with a bipartisan group of state attorneys general to fast-track the review of consumer complaints, hold airlines accountable, and protect the rights of the traveling public.
  • In 2023, the flight cancellation rate in the U.S. was a record low at under 1.2% — the lowest rate of flight cancellations in over 10 years despite a record amount of air travel.
  • DOT is undertaking its first ever industry-wide review of airline privacy practices and its first review of airline loyalty programs.

In addition to finalizing the rules to require automatic refunds and protect against surprise fees, DOT is also pursuing rulemakings that would:

  • Propose to ban family seating junk fees and guarantee that parents can sit with their children for no extra charge when they fly. Before President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg pressed airlines last year, no airline committed to guaranteeing fee-free family seating. Now, four airlines guarantee fee-free family seating, and the Department is working on its family seating junk fee ban proposal.
  • Propose to make passenger compensation and amenities mandatory so that travelers are taken care of when airlines cause flight delays or cancellations.
  • Expand the rights for passengers who use wheelchairs and ensure that they can travel safely and with dignity . The comment period on this proposed rule closes on May 13, 2024.

The final rule on refunds can be found at https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer/latest-news and at regulations.gov , docket number DOT-OST-2022-0089. There are different implementation periods in this final rule ranging from six months for airlines to provide automatic refunds when owed to 12 months for airlines to provide transferable travel vouchers or credits when consumers are unable to travel for reasons related to a serious communicable disease.

Miles Russell, 15, has played five rounds on the Korn Ferry Tour. He has shot under par in each one.

Russell opened the Veritex Bank Championship in 3-under 68, playing his first 17 holes bogey-free before a three-putt bogey at the par-5 18th hole Thursday at Texas Rangers Golf Club. Remarkably, he’s still outside the projected cut line; 79 players stand 4 under or better after the opening round, with the top 65 and ties making the 36-hole cut in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

Russell, the reigning AJGA Boys Junior Player of the Year, earned his spot at the Veritex Bank Championship with a T20 at last week’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, into which the left-handed Floridian received a sponsor exemption. He validated that spot and then some with four rounds under par – 66, 68, 70, 66 – to become the youngest player to record a top-25 finish on the PGA TOUR or Korn Ferry Tour, on record (since 1983).

Russell proved Thursday that his game travels well. After opening with eight straight pars in his afternoon round, he caught fire with birdies on Nos. 9, 11, 12 and 16. Although the day ended with a disappointing three-putt bogey from 25 feet at the finishing hole, missing a 4-footer for par, he’s well within striking distance of the cut line into Friday’s second round.

Russell will begin Friday 10 strokes back of leader Frankie Capan III, who shot a course-record, 13-under 58 in the opening round, matching the second-lowest score in Korn Ferry Tour history.

Here’s more from Thursday’s opening round at the Veritex Bank Championship:

  • Won back-to-back individual state titles at the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division III Championships in 2017 and 2018, winning the latter by 10 strokes off the strength of a second-round 11-under 59 on the Sonoran Desert Course at Omni Tucson National Resort

Frankie Capan III on when a sub-60 round first entered his mind… “I'd say going to the back nine. When I turned at 6 (under par)… the front nine's playing at shorter than the back nine, so you might have a few more birdie opportunities. At the same time, I'm really just still trying to hit every shot, just stay really patient and present out there to where… it was on the radar, but I wasn't really focused too much on it. I actually forgot it was par 71. I thought it was par 72, so when I got to 13 I knew that, OK, there's 59. I shot 59 before, so I thought, you know, may as well break that. I didn't know it was par 71, but was really just trying to birdie No. 17, No. 18, but unfortunately didn't get either one. Yeah, made like an eight foot slider on 18 to shoot 58. It was pretty cool.”

Capan on his focus during the round… “I knew where I was at the whole time out there. I thought it was cool, it was fun, but at the same time like you're hitting those shots. I think that's the part I fell in love with the most is just enjoying being out there, hitting great golf shots. That to me is where I get the most joy. So instead of thinking about a number or anything like that, I just want to keep hitting great shots. Obviously going lower is a result of just staying present and hitting those great shots.”

Capan on what stuck out about his round… “I think the funny thing is I look back on my round and I actually didn't capitalize on a lot of the easy holes. Like No. 1, short par 4, didn't birdie. No. 7, really short par 4, didn't birdie. I just was always in the proper spot. I would say the best shot I hit all day, I had a 7 iron into No. 9, par 5, and hit it to like four feet. That was probably the best shot I hit, because I was in between clubs and the wind was kind of swirling off the left, so (I) was able to kind of flight a 7 iron in and stuff it in there and made eagle. It gave us a nice boost going to the back nine.
