The Chester County Studio Tour is returning in May for its fourteenth iteration bigger and better than ever, writes Stephi Wild for the Broadway World .

The annual event that started with just 25 artists and 12 studios has grown into an amazing showcase with 202 artists in 76 studios.

The festivities will take place on May 18 and 19.

“Each spring, our tour sparks the community with the abundance of talent that our artists display, eagerly sharing their creativity,” said Jeff Schaller , Founder of the Chester County Studio Tour. “In a world of fleeting digital images and Artificial Intelligence , the studio tour stands as a beacon of authentic, personal connection.”

Schaller created the tour with both artists and art enthusiasts in mind. The event provides artists – both new and established – with a platform to exhibit their work as well as their spaces.

In the past 13 years, thousands of art enthusiasts have visited local studios as part of the tour. Visitors get a chance to delve into artists’ creative processes in an intimate and impactful way that transcends normal gallery interaction.

Visitors can also design a self-guided tour .

Chester County Studio Tour Announces Largest Event Ever Featuring 200 Artists And 79 Studios

The Chester County Studio Tour has announced their annual two-day event that showcases, highlights, and shares artists with art connoisseurs, collectors, and curious neighbors.

This year, organizers are looking forward to the largest event ever, featuring 200 artists and 79 studios throughout the region. Widely regarded as a casual way to introduce art lovers and patrons to the arts and become immersed in the creative talent scattered throughout the county, the Tour returns for its 13th year, May 20-21, 2023, at studios throughout Chester County.

"We are thrilled to announce that, for our thirteenth year, we have the largest collection of artists and studios ever involved in the tour," said County Studio Tour creator Jeff Schaller. "Over the last 13 years, we have furnished many homes with art, all while inspiring new artists to join us. We can truly celebrate over a decade of bringing the arts to Chester County. The artists are the soul and fabric of our rich cultural community. They are responsible for the success of the County Studio Tour."

To date, thousands of art enthusiasts have toured local studios as part of the Chester County Studio Tour. The region's best artists are represented in captivating studio environments that go beyond the usual gallery experience. Visitors are offered an opportunity to delve into artists' creative processes in a casual, impactful way that transcends normal gallery interaction. Studios will exhibit painting, sculpture, jewelry, photography, clay, glass, paper and fiber. All artists will be present to interact with both buyers and browsers alike.

Visitors are encouraged to design their own self-guided tour with the Chester County Studio Tour's new interactive website, sponsored by Tolsdorf Oil Lube Express. By visiting countystudiotour.com, visitors can click the "add to Itinerary" button of their favorite artists, and have Google Maps plot the most efficient route, providing turn-by-turn directions to each chosen studio. For those short on time, the tour has designed a new "Find 5!" feature, which will find the five closest studios for the visitor. Members of the public can also start with a studio close to their starting point, or anywhere they like, by using a convenient map.

The County Collector Series, sponsored by Dovetail Auctions and Pook & Pook will again be offered in 2023. The public can collect an original framed 6" x 6" piece of art for the special price of $90.00. Two-dimensional artists have created original works of art in a 6" x 6" frame. The County Studio Tour wants to make art affordable for everyone and wants to show that art can be everywhere. Whether this is one's first time buying original art or you are a seasoned collector, the tour has something for everyone. With the County Collectors Club, art is within reach. A photo of each work in this series is included in the catalogue and displayed on the website.

The 2023 Chester County Studio Tour is sponsored by Citadel Federal Credit Union; the tour is free and open to the public, Saturday, May 20, from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 21, from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Please visit www.countystudiotour.com for a map, artist and studio listings, and the catalogue. Handicapped accessible studios are marked on the studio pages in the catalogue and on the website. Email [email protected] or call 610.942.9629 for further information.

Things to do | get out this weekend and see artists’ work on chester county studio tour, 203 artists will display their work..

Man standing in art studio surrounded by works.

Paintings, prints, ceramics, sculpture, glass and fiber, will all be on display for free as the doors to 76 artists’ studios are flung wide open.

The event will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The tour started in 2005 with just 25 artists, and has grown to become a cherished annual happening.

“It’s huge,” said artist and event organizer Jeff Shaller whose studio will be open to the public, at 80 Highspire Road, in Downingtown.

“It will give a venue for artists to share their artwork and share it with the public,” Shaller said. “We are getting people in the area out and collecting artwork.

“I’m surprised how much talent there is out there and how much new talent there is.

“All the artists are excited. Working with 203 artists is a huge production. And ta-da, it’s here.”

Shaller will host guest artists at his studio from Harrisburg, southern Chester County and Berks County.

Maybe you will stumble upon the studio of the next N.C. Wyeth who Shaller is saddened that he never met.

“It’s like a legacy, a history thing,” Shaller said. “Why not do it now when you can meet the artist?

“Your neighbor could be an artist and you’d never know it. The tour takes the mystery out of the art world.”

Shaller describes his art as pop and fun, bright and nostalgic.

“You don’t want my problems on your wall,” he quipped.

One of the special treats on the tour will be the sale of what Shaller referred to as “a steal,” or a “County Collector.” Each artist has prepared a 6’’X6” piece of art that will sell for $90 when the doors open at 10 a.m. This special piece will not be on sale prior to 10 a.m. Saturday. This art is posted on the studio tour website.

While there is a catalogue for the event, Shaller said that now finding one is like obtaining the Holy Grail or a Faberge Egg.

Alas–no worries–everything you need to know about the 2024 studio tour is available at www.countystudiotour.com

Especially valuable is “Find 5 Studios,” at the website, which using your location will find and direct you to the five closest studios on the tour.

Mixed Media: Chester County Studio Tour

By Caroline Roosevelt , Columnist, The Times

chester county open studio tour

The studio of local artist Al Moretti.

What does a “studio” mean to you? What does that word evoke? Do you imagine a messy den of creation filled with loose papers (something like Francis Bacon’s hoarder nightmare?), or,  spartan–save the paint splattered walls a la Jackson Pollock? Or maybe you envision neatly stacked paintings in an airy loft, where the light pours in from slanted skylights? Take the opportunity this weekend to explore what it is to be a studio, and to house the creative energy and final products of local artists. You will find what you are looking for at this year’s Chester County Open Studio Tour.

This weekend Saturday May 18th, and Sunday May 19th, the much-anticipated Chester County Open Studio Tour descends on our region. Participants are readying their studios and yard signs, as well as putting those finishing touches on the work they’re exhibiting. This year, organizer and artist Jeff Schaler has pulled together more than 62 studios housing work by over 148 artists of varying media. The open studio tour is an excellent opportunity to take a more intimate look at the process behind the piece. Artists open up their creative spaces to the public, free of charge, to provide a more indepth art experience. Delaware County, Montgomery County and Bucks County also participate in the open studio tours as well as Philadelphia, which has an expansive tour in October.

The studio of Sarah Rafferty

Overwhelmed already? Don’t be! Chester County Open Studio Tour has thought of everything–and they are here for you to map your very own itinerary. If you check out the website, you can select at least ten studios and, through google maps, Chester County Open Studio Tour will map out your itinerary. Art and technology, merging together to accomplish a common goal–tis a beautiful thing.

I will be showing my work, alongside fellow painters Cary Galbraith, Catherine Peluso, and David Katz (who will also host us all at his studio (#32!) in West Chester, PA). Katz’s studio has been thoughtfully curated with artists who compliment each other, and work that all serves to create a crisp, colorful atmosphere whether through landscapes, still life, or figurative work. All painters–all with a contemporary persuasion. Stop in and pay a visit!

Take some time this week to plan your trip to view whatever your heart desires between 10am – 6pm Saturday (May 18) and 10am – 5pm Sunday (May 19). You’ll recognize a lot of familiar names as I’ve written about many of these artists throughout the year. Contributing artists/studio hosts include Alessandra Manzotti, Sus Iserbyt, Katee Boyle (Gallery Duo), John Baker, Erica Brown, Maryanne Buschini, Karen D’Allaird, Randall Graham, Al Moretti, Monique Sarkessian, Rob Sigafoos, Brett Anderson Walker and so many more! I hope to celebrate the fantastic art of the Chester County region with you this weekend! Tune in to Art Watch Radio this Wednesday from 1-1:30pm on WCHE 1520am when Jeff Schaller hosts artists of the Chester County Studio Tour. Until next week!

Open door artists in the 19350

chester county open studio tour

There is, contained at the working space of every artist, writer, painter, sculptor, woodworker, photographer, sculptor and artisan an energy that is both delicious and intoxicating.

Areas like this are typically wedged as an afterthought into the side pocket of an artist’s home with little fanfare. They are often scruffy with the residue of trial-and-error ideas, serving as incubators of self-doubt and vestibules for the eureka breakthroughs that happen when no one else is there.

In Landenberg, there are many studios and many artists who bury themselves there in separate acts of creation, but this weekend, eight of them will fling open the doors to their homes and the places they work and share all that intoxicating deliciousness with the entire Landenberg community.

The first Artists of Landenberg Studio Tour – which will be held on Oct. 14 and 15 – will invite the public to an open, self-guided tour that will showcase the work of eight prominent local artists and introduce visitors to ten other artists whose work is regularly showcased at several artisan shows throughout Chester County and beyond.

“Like a lot of the artists in this group, I have hosted open studios on my own, and many of us have also done it as part of the Chester County Artists Studio Tour , but we have such a great community of artists here in Landenberg, why don’t we all have our homes open on the same weekend?” said event organizer and watercolor artist Kathy Ruck, who will be one of eight hosts at the event. “This way, our neighbors and patrons can get to all our studios within a few miles of each other, and along the way, see the work of our guest artists.”

Ruck then began calling around to some of her artistic colleagues to gauge their ideas of creating a Landenberg-only studio tour, “and keep it within the 19350 area code,” she said.

The response was immediate and positive, and slowly, Ruck and other hosts began to put together a roster of other Landenberg artists, but the idea was shut down for two years due to COVID-19.

“When 2023 came around and restrictions were lifted, I thought, ‘This is the year to do it,” Ruck said.

While the inaugural Artists of Landenberg Studio Tour will serve as a showcase for 18 artists, it will also firmly solidify Landenberg’s place on the artistic map of Chester County. In contrast to this year’s Chester County Studio Tour in May – which featured 200 artists at 79 studios throughout the county, the Artists of Landenberg Studio Tour will be far more intimate, with each studio only a few miles from the next.

If the first event is successful, Ruck said that it may pave the way for future studio tours that will feature new Landenberg-based artists.

“This is the first of our tours, and it’s a great opportunity for people in our community and just beyond to get to know all these artists,” Ruck said. “I think people will really like to get to know them and be able to buy local, because we’re not just artists, we’re also small business owners. I am most looking forward to community involvement – the people in Landenberg and in surrounding communities -- recognizing Landenberg as an artistic hub.”

The Artists of Landenberg Studio Tour will take place on Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Oct. 15 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The self-guided tour is free and each studio/home is located within minutes of each other. To learn more and see the tour map, visit “The Artists of Landenberg Studio Tour” on Facebook.
