Apple store field trips will be replaced with a new educational experience.

Avatar for Michael Steeber

Apple has officially retired the Apple Field Trip program previously offered in its retail stores. In its place, “a new educational experience” is coming soon.

Prior to the onset of COVID-19, K-12 students, youth groups, and teachers could schedule hands-on group sessions at their local Apple Stores through the Apple Field Trip program. Students worked together with Apple Creative Pros to find their creative passions, and educators explored how to take their classrooms further by making the most of Apple tools and resources.

Both Today at Apple and the Apple Field Trip program were disrupted when nearly every Apple Store closed this spring due to the pandemic. While Today at Apple has returned online with virtual sessions and will someday return to physical Apple Stores, the Apple Field Trip program will not. Apple today removed its Field Trip registration system and noted that customers can no longer book sessions. “Stay tuned,” Apple says, for “a new educational experience.”

In the meantime, Apple is still offering Apple Camp at Home sessions  for kids through July 31, along with a free workbook students can download to complete at their own pace. Apple’s Education website  provides schools, teachers, and parents with resources for at-home learning.

Local News | Burnham Orchards pick-your-own apple school field trips return this fall

School administration and teachers can book field trips to the apple orchards for an educational experience around the farm, according to Alexis Burnham, chief operations officer for Burnham Orchards.

This is the first  tour since 2020, Burnham said.

“We are doing so many new things this year,” she said. “My thought was well why not bring them back?

“I, personally as a leader, feel it’s important to my mission to make sure we’re creating good experiences for little kids specifically.”

The addition of school field trips creates a unique opportunity for students and staff to learn more about farming apples and what it takes to grow and harvest them at a high rate, Burnham said.

The experience can help children who may take an interest in farming learn more about how to incorporate it into their future, she said.

Burnham Orchards in Berlin Heights has a variety of pick-your-own apple orchards for guests to pick apples straight from the tree. (Larissa Beriswill - The Morning Journal)

“It’s exposing children to that to see if there’s any interest, or maybe, plant that seed for the future for them,” Burnham said.

Experiences depend on the package chosen, however, every child will have the chance to take a hayride containing different educational information pertaining to age group, and pick their own apples in the designated orchard, she said.

Of over 20 apple varieties grown on the farm, 15 of them are available for pick-your-own, but options vary as harvest differs for each type, Burnham said.

Some apple varieties available this year on field trips can include Honeycrisp, Red Delicious, Empire, Melrose, Suncrisp, Granny Smith and Fuji.

“Administrations, teachers and staff are excited to be coming out to the farm again,” Burnham said. “We don’t even know what we’re going to be picking until the week before, depending on what ripens.”

Teachers also can utilize the tours for educational purposes of their own, she said.

New this year, students can tour the packing house and attend specific classes like home economics.

“Teachers are really excited and are actually integrating the field trips into some of their lesson plans,” Burnham said.

Other new additions to the farm this fall include a new gem mining station for youngsters, a corn hole putt-putt course, improvements to the tire swing playground and an adults Fire Truck Bar with eight hard cider varieties.

Burnham said the farm also added Sensory Saturdays for people with sensory challenges who want to enjoy a trip to the orchard, market or bakery.

“We’re limiting the amount of tickets that they can buy,” she said. “There will be no music and a quiet tent just in case someone needs to decompress or needs a quiet moment to themselves.

“We’re very excited about that.”

The farm also will host a series of Fall Festival events evolving from a space theme in light of the April solar eclipse.

The festival starts Sept. 21 and will take place every weekend until Oct. 27, Burnham said.

Guests can walk the space-themed corn maze, she said.

They also can participate in answering trivia questions throughout the maze where the right answers can be turned in for a $1 off coupon good in the market or bakery.

Burnham Orchards hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and market hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

“We have more time for fun, more food trucks, more activities,” Burnham said. “Don’t hesitate to reach out to Burnham Orchards to see if we could partner on whatever you have coming up.”

Schools workshops from the Apple Store

Apple Stores across the UK have expanded on their existing free workshop programme and extended the scheme to schools.

Teachers wanting to find out more about Apple products can now sign up for one of its Field Trips alongside their pupils.

The onsite team from Apple will show students and teachers how its products can make great tools for teaching and learning.

Pupils can create something on the spot; or they can bring in a project they’ve already worked on and turn the store into a theatre, sharing their achievements with parents, teachers and friends.

Field Trip to the Apple Store

Students will use the Mac computers in-store to create photo albums in iPhoto, edit video in iMovie, make Keynote presentations, or even compose their own songs in GarageBand.

Whether your students create projects from scratch or come to showcase their own work, Apple will provide all the hardware and software they need.

Staff will be on hand to answer questions and give expert on-the-spot advice, and every participating student and teacher gets a free T-shirt.

Who can take part in an Apple Field Trip?

Field Trips are open to Primary and Secondary school students and teachers in the UK. Each event can accommodate up to 25 students.

How long is a Field Trip?

‘Showcase’ Field Trips last one hour and ‘Create’ Field Trips last 90 minutes. To schedule more time, contact your chosen Apple Store.

When can I book a Field Trip for?

Field Trips run every autumn and spring. Registration is now open for weekday events at selected stores. Details on year-round programmes can be found on Apple’s Youth Programmes website.

Apple Summer Camp

Apple Summer Camp is another youth education scheme from Apple, suitable for children aged eight to 12.

Pupils will learn to make movies by storyboarding ideas, shooting video and creating an original soundtrack.

Alternatively, kids can create interactive books complete with their own illustrations and sound effects.

For more information visit www.apple.com .

Apple Store Field Trips retired, new education events coming soon

Apple DRW College Prep 100cameras

What you need to know

  • Apple has officially retired Apple Field Trips at the Apple Store.
  • The program was popular for educators and students.
  • New educational experiences will take its place, but they have not been announced yet.

When the pandemic caused Apple to close its retail stores across the world, two of its popular in-store programs were also affected.

While Today at Apple went virtual and will be returning to stores in due time, Apple's popular Field Trips program has gone another way. Reported by 9to5Mac , the program has been officially discontinued the program.

"Stay tuned," Apple says, for "a new educational experience."

Apple has not said exactly what the "new educational experience" will be, but it will most likely resemble something similar to benefits that the Field Trips program brought to students and educators. The Field Trips program brought together teachers and students with Apple's Creative Pros to learn how to use Apple's technology to take their learning even further.

It is currently unclear when Apple will roll out a new program to replace Field Trips. If digital, it could launch at any point, but if held in stores we could be in for a wait depending on region.

One of the goals at Alexander Leigh Center for Autism is to create experiences for our students that allow them to enter into the community to practice their skills and have some good old kid fun. The staff at All Seasons Orchard were accepting of the special needs of our students and made sure that they felt welcomed. The kids had a blast! We are grateful for the partnership we have built with All Seasons and we look forward to this season.

Took a senior group to this wonderful location and it was such a great experience. The All Seasons Orchard staff was so accommodating, friendly, and really went the extra mile for us! Cost package was great but not nearly as great as the memories made with the residents! Parking was easy and bus transfer was quick and close to the entrance. The School:

Apple School is a non-profit, non-discriminatory educational organization whose purpose is to provide quality preschool education and a quality Before/After School Program in an environment of warm support for each child. Established in 1982, Apple School has obtained Private School status and is not affiliated with any religious organization or corporate franchise. Our objectives are to expose children to the widest possible variety of experiences in order to arouse their curiosity, challenge their physical and cognitive abilities, and encourage self-expression. We will encourage independence in the care of self and the mastery of everyday tasks. We plan to utilize the wealth of talent and expertise available in this unique community to bring a myriad of enrichment activities and experiences into the classroom to complement our daily schedule.

Apple School is open all year, Monday through Friday, and offers preschool classes, half day or full day programs with 3 or 5 day options. The school is open from 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM to children ages 2 through grade five. Bus transportation is provided for children attending Rockbridge, Mill Creek, Beulah Ralph or Ridgeway Elementary Schools. The school meets all state licensing requirements, serves nutritious breakfasts, lunches and snacks, and has provisions for those children who nap. The school does not take a Christmas or Spring “break”, and remains in session except for major holidays. The school will make every attempt to remain open during inclement weather. We will not automatically close when “snow days” are announced for the public schools. However, during the severest winter weather, please listen to school closing announcements on KOMU TV or KOMU TV’s website at www.komu.com

The school employs degreed teachers for their instructional programs and exceeds student-teacher ratios mandated by the state of MO. These ratios are often significantly reduced when special resource teachers are present such as our staff Music Teacher.

Admittance Policy:

It is our policy to admit and care for all children without regard to race, religion, or national origin. First consideration will be given to siblings of children attending or who have attended Apple School.

A nonrefundable fee of $25.00 per child is required to confirm a child’s enrollment or to be placed on our waiting list. A one week deposit is required for all students except siblings. This deposit is applied to the last week of the child’s attendance.

Several options for payment are available. Parents may pay weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. When paying weekly or bi-weekly, payment is due in advance each Monday. If paying monthly, tuition is due by the 5th of each month. Parents are financially responsible for any holidays, or absences which may fall on the child’s attendance schedule. Sibling discounts are extended to families enrolling more than one child: 10% discount for the second and third child. Youngest full time child pays full rate, siblings receive the 10% discount. One week’s vacation credit is offered to families whose child has been enrolled for at least six months.

Observation:

Apple School has an “Open Door” policy with regard to observations of classroom activities. However, for the protection of the children, all visitors must check in with the Director of Head Teacher before observing. We recommend visiting during the morning hours to observe the widest range of activities.

Apple School’s playgrounds are fenced. The main door to the building is locked. Access is obtained through the use of a security keypad system. Each family is assigned their own security code to use to unlock the main door. Visitors must ring the doorbell and the Director or a staff member will assist them. Persons other than parents will not be allowed to pick up any child without the parents’ prior consent and must provide a picture ID to the Director. All classrooms are monitored via video surveillance.

The Program:

A balanced program is planned to promote the child’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth. The curriculum emphasizes: large and fine motor development, independent activity periods which stimulate social interaction, imaginative growth, and dramatic expression; music and music appreciation; art, using a wide variety of mediums; puppetry; and finger-play and story periods. Because the preschooler is at an optimum age for learning, spatial relationships, mathematical concepts, and language development are presented on a stimulating level. The very spacious classrooms are equipped with developmentally appropriate materials to stimulate the child’s interest and invite exploration and experimentation through “hands on” activities. Block Area for creative block play; Home Living Area for dramatic and role play; Science Area – use of magnets, magnifying glasses, scales, varying seasonal science activities and experiments; Manipulative Area – objects and games aimed at the development of fine motor skills: lacing, stringing beads, Lego blocks, etc.; Art Area – free access to art materials and special art projects using a variety of media. Emphasis is on process-oriented art activities with the goal of developing the child’s creative expression.

Apple School is fortunate to have two acres of playgrounds which include: a large grassy area for ball games and summer water play; a large swing area; a playground with climbing equipment, slides, large play trucks, cars, etc.; a paved lot with basketball hoops and a shed full of tricycles, wagons, balls, etc.,

Large sand areas are available, as are many picnic tables under shade trees for frequent picnics in the nice weather. We have many full-sized trees which afford many shady areas in which to play. With such large physical spaces, we find there are fewer discipline problems as the children have less crowding with so many choices of areas in which to play. We feel children can learn as much from the outdoor environment as the indoor classroom.

A daily activity report is posted by the teachers, listing activities and special events which took place in the classroom that day. We offer field trips to children age five and above: community parks, farms, grocery stores, fire station, University museums, etc.

Apple School offers a Before/After School Program for children Kindergarten through 5th grade. A variety of planned and free choice activities is available daily. Full day program is available for public school Christmas and Spring Break vacations, public school holidays, “snow days” and conference days. Transportation is provided to Rockbridge, Mill Creek, Beulah Ralph and Ridgeway elementary schools. There are no additional fees for transportation. Full Summer Program offered to Kindergartners through 5th graders: indoor and outdoor activities, swimming lessons, field trips, nature lore, cooking experiences, arts and crafts. Specific topics of interest to this age group studied and explored each summer. See Summer Program page.

Music Teacher:

Apple School employs a degreed Music Teacher to conduct music classes for all the children.  She provides a wide variety of musical experiences to all classrooms. She utilizes drums, keyboards, rhythm instruments, etc. There are no additional fees for this activity. See full description of this program under “About Us”.

Creative Movement:

Our teachers provide myriad active, fun activities to assist in the development of fundamental movement actions.  The children are engaged in coordination and balance games incorporating throwing, catching, balancing, jumping, hopping, galloping, etc.   There are no additional fees for this activity. See full description of this program under “About Us”.

Our primary goal for each child is the development of a strong, positive self-concept, which will allow the child to enjoy an ever-expanding competence in dealing fairly, confidently, and enthusiastically with himself, others, and the world around him.

“A POSITIVE ADULT IDENTITY DEPENDS ON POSITIVE CHILDHOOD LIFE EXPERIENCES”

We, at Apple School, plan to provide positive experiences for each child in a climate of warmth and acceptance.

Historic Moscow is now one of Europe’s most vibrant cities – a sprawling metropolis of more than 12 million people.  The Russian capital is a dazzling mix of wide avenues, medieval churches, Soviet skyscrapers, art galleries and shopping centres.  Well-known sights such as Red Square, the Kremlin, and Lenin’s tomb are a must.

The legacy of the Soviet period is evident across the city in its architecture and the cultural scene is impressive, with ballet, theatre and art still featuring heavily in daily life.

Moscow is a fascinating destination for a school trip and sure to be one of the highlights of school life.

Live updates, what happens in disney stays in disney: nyc educrats took own kids to magic kingdom on trips meant for homeless students.

Six Department of Education employees used “forged permission slips” to take their own kids and grandchildren to Disney World and on other city-funded trips meant for homeless students, investigators alleged.

The secret perks robbed some of the city’s most disadvantaged kids of a chance to enjoy the Magic Kingdom — a trip that cost $66,000 for 50 or so adults and kids, a staffer said — and other multiple-day trips between 2016 and 2019 to Washington, DC, New Orleans, Boston, upstate Rocking Horse Ranch Resort, and Frost Valley YMCA campground, according to a newly released report by the Special Commissioner of Investigation for city schools.

Linda M. Wilson, a Queens supervisor of DOE’s “Students in Temporary Housing,” took her own two daughters on trips, and encouraged colleagues to take their sons, daughters and grandkids, but tried to cover up the shady practice when SCI started asking questions, the SCI report said.

DOE staffer Shaquieta Boyd, seen here staring at the camera, pursing her lips, took her daughter on trips for homeless students because her boss Linda M. Wilson "not only gave me permission, she encouraged it."

“What happens here stays with us,” Wilson allegedly told co-workers.

“She said everyone should stick to the same story that we did not take our children on the trip,” an employee told The Post.

“She told us to lie to the investigators.”

While some homeless students attended the trips, the staffers’ kids took up valuable spots.

One DOE educator “had to beg Wilson to allow him to add two of his students” on a trip to Disney World while Wilson and several staffers she supervised brought family members, the SCI said.

“Taking money meant for homeless students is extremely inappropriate,” said Naveed Hasan, a Manhattan public school parent and member of the city’s Panel for Educational Policy who advocates for students in need of housing. “I’m shocked.”

Family members are not allowed on field trips, even if the DOE is reimbursed for their expenses, chancellor’s rules state.

Wilson and other staffers used the names of homeless students to fabricate permission slips, then forged parent signatures on the paperwork, witnesses told investigators.

“Few of the homeless students listed on the paperwork actually attended the trips,” a whistleblower told the SCI.

At first, Wilson used a DOE contractor to book transportation, hotels, food and activities.

The city paid for the trips with a $300,000 federal grant from the National Center for Homeless Education meant to give kids enrichment and incentives to improve their attendance or academics.

Wilson supervised about 20 staffers who worked with students in temporary housing, defined as those living in a shelter, car, park or abandoned building.

Last year, a record 119,320 NYC students — roughly one in nine kids enrolled in public schools — experienced homelessness, according to Advocates for Children of New York.

Most out-of-town trips included four to six staff members as chaperones, and one or two buses for about 30 kids each, the SCI report says.

The buses alone cost about $2,700 each per trip, a staffer said. Those who went to Disney took the train.

Wilson would decide which staff members could attend a trip, assign students to each staff member to chaperone, then replace spots assigned for those students with staff members’ kids, the SCI said.

Wilson planned trips to colleges, including Washington, DC’s Howard University i n 2019, purportedly so homeless kids could tour campuses.

But she didn’t contact the colleges to arrange visits, the SCI alleges.

On a three-day trip purportedly to see Syracuse University in June 2018, the DOE group only ate lunch on the upstate campus, the report says. Then they left for Niagara Falls, more than three hours away.

After planning numerous trips, Wilson abruptly canceled a visit to Philadelphia in 2018 when she was required to process the payments for trips directly through the DOE, instead of going through a contractor.

Wilson, whose last salary was $99,726, brought one or two of her daughters on trips, the SCI said.

Other staffers accused of bringing family members are Mishawn Jack, who took two daughters; Shaquieta Boyd, who took a daughter; Virgen Ramos, who took two granddaughters; Maria Sylvester, who took two daughters; and Joanne Castro, who took two sons.

Boyd was fired, but blamed Wilson: “The supervisor in charge not only gave me permission, she encouraged it, and I had no reason to believe that this was against the rules.”

After completing its probe in January 2023, the SCI recommended Chancellor David Banks terminate all six employees and require them to pay restitution, with the amounts to be determined by the DOE.

The DOE also fired attendance teacher Jack on Sept. 5, 2023, records show.

In a settlement last month with the city Conflicts of Interest Board , Jack admitted using slots intended for homeless kids to take her two daughters to see the Broadway show “Wicked” and on a trip to Washington, DC, in 2016 — excursions she was hired to chaperone.

Jack agreed to pay a $1,200 fine, which the COIB slashed from $3,000, the approximate cost of the trips, due to the “financial hardship” of losing her job.

She also blamed taking the perks on Wilson, saying she “told staff they could bring family members,” according to the COIB settlement.

Reached this week, Wilson flatly denied that her daughters attended trips and that she allowed staff to bring their own children. She insisted that DOE’s “checks and balances” would have prevented such abuses, and called the SCI probe “a witch hunt.”

Wilson, 63, said she wasn’t terminated, but retired from the DOE.

The DOE would not say whether anyone was disciplined or paid restitution. “All staff identified in this report are no longer employed by New York City Public Schools,” said spokeswoman Jenna Lyle.

The SCI decided not to refer the cases for criminal prosecution, citing “the lack of available documentation,” a spokesperson said.

DOE staffer Shaquieta Boyd, seen here staring at the camera, pursing her lips, took her daughter on trips for homeless students because her boss Linda M. Wilson "not only gave me permission, she encouraged it."
