Essential Vietnam & Cambodia Tour

Essential Vietnam & Cambodia

The itinerary was interesting, hotels adequate and in most cases clean. Train ride was tiresome but we put it as life experience. Our CEO, Sita, was very enthusiastic and helpful. We had a great group of mostly older travelers so our needs were similar. We really enjoyed Halong Bay stay. The only change we would suggest was not getting up in the middle of the night to be at Angkor Wat so early. We waited for almost two hours in darkness waiting for sunrise and it wasn't worth it. We were so tired afterwards that we could not really enjoy visiting Angkor Wat temples. The local guides in Vietnam were very hard to understand (maybe find better ones?), so we've missed on some info. Cambodian guides were much better.

Endless Beauty of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand - 19 Days Tour

Endless Beauty of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand - 19 Days

This tour was epic for me. As a first time American to all these countries was a dream. Danny from the Legends Company was very informative, took care to keep us informed and accessible by Whats up to help and assist with travel issues. We picked a private driver and guide. It was so worth it in hot weather. The hotels and meals were good. The itinerary was great. I would recommend spending more time in Thailand on your own after the tour. I believe this was a great out and a great price.

Glimpse Of Indochina In 16 Days (Vietnam,Cambodia,Thailand,Laos) Tour

Glimpse Of Indochina In 16 Days (Vietnam,Cambodia,Thailand,Laos)

In Total the trip was good in that we were able to see a part of the world that we had never and might never again) see. However there were various things that were surprises to us. The fact that it was our responsibility to check in for flights booked by Tour Radar was a surprise and added a level of stress in the midst of the trip that could have been dealt with by advance communication or by Tourradar offering another element to the package which includes a concierge type service which gets boarding passes (ie could use the in country tour guides). Not all hotels had staff that could communicate effectively (if at all) in English which would have made the first days in a city easier . Finding good restaurants, ATMs, drug stores etc. Some of your guides were helpful in providing a lot of that information when they dropped us off at the hotel. Chang our Bangkok guide did not do that and with th e challenges of hotel staff to communicate , our first day or two in Bangkok was the low point of our tour. Also the next day city tour was poorly done and the length of the tour could have been extended a little so the city tour was more comprehensive. Also I am told Thailand is a beautiful country but we saw nothing of the beauty that might have made Thailand famous. We enjoyed the Hare Residence in Siem Reap and would suggest keeping it in the program.. Also Laos was enjoyable , as was the hotel but the only suggestion would be to add or provide the opportunity for a visit to see one of the elephant reserves near to Luang Prabang. A city tour of Na Noi (and Saigon) would have been good to include. We came early so were able to book our own tours in Ha Noi but feel we really did not see Saigon at all. Overall the trip was good. I would suggest (as previously mentioned) a concierge type service for older travellers and maybe expanding the tour groups to 8-10 would make that more cost effective

Tour was amazing. Food was amazing. My group was amazing. But Kim made this trip 10x more amazing than ever expected.

Epic Asia Tour

I had the best time ever on Epic Asia. The itinerary was incredible - we got to see so many amazing things. My particular highlights were the snorkelling trips, elephant sanctuary, and seeing the lanterns in Hoi An. All transport was super well organised, I had no stress at all! A particular shout out to Mea, Adam Casey, and Tola, who was all excellent group leaders. I would recommend this trip to anyone and everyone!

Splendid of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand 18 Days

From the onset, TourRadar thru their local agency, PrestiGo, took care of everything. Receiving us at the airport dropping us to the hotels. Tours were amazing, great transportation and well versed your guides. It was a seamless and wonderful travel experience. We were both in our 70s and were well taken care of. Thank you Tourradar!

Fantastic of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand in 16 Days - Halong Bay/ Hoi An/ Siem Reap/ Phuket Tour

Fantastic of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand in 16 Days - Halong Bay/ Hoi An/ Siem Reap/ Phuket

The Tour went without any problems. All transfers, hotels and tours went perfectly. Very good experience. Just a few small repairs: the tour on the second day in Siem Reap to the lake and crafts is of no interest. It is a pure waste of time. I suggest which will be replaced by a second day of visiting the temples of Angkor. The hotels chosen (5 stars) were excellent, with the exception of the Angkor Miracle in Siem Reap (bad breakfast and in need of renovation). Contact with the operator without being in person was always quick and without problems. Very good experience. I recommend it without hesitation

Discover Indochina: 10-Day Private Expedition (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand)

Danke

Was an absolutely amazing experience and definitely recommend! I did the Thailand and Vietnam tour (29 days) and wish I could’ve done more! The days are packed with great activities e.g cooking classes, kayaking, releasing lanterns in Hoi An and the day with the elephants (one of my fave bits!) but you also get a nice amount of down time, to do as you please (go to the pool/gym/sunbath/explore). We had Sam S as our leader for Vietnam and Em for Thailand and they were so SO amazing, went above and beyond in so many ways and helped us so much with our onward travel too. Even after the tour, when we were in a different country they helped us so much! Sam also organised 2 big cakes to be brought out at one of our group dinners for special occasions 1. Was a couples first wedding anniversary and 2. Was a girl who had been offered a job while on the tour. It was so thoughtful and that is just one example! So shout out to Sam and Em for everything and just being great people, not just leaders! We all made friends with them super quickly and they are both naturals at the job, they deffo deserve a pay rise ???? You also make friends with your group so quickly and I’ve met so many lovely people doing the tour and it’s an amazing way to see a country! It was lush not having to worry or book anything and it all be taken care of and can’t recommend it enough ????

What people love about thailand and vietnam tours.

We did our tour with Bravo Indochina Tour. The tour was excellent arranged which met with our expectations. Our tour guide and driver were great knowledge and helpful. We felt so comfort with the services provided and arranged! We would highly recommend this tour!

The communication and respect provided by Legend Tours was exceptional. I ask a lot of questions. I received timely responses every time. I made changes 3 times to my itinerary and each time was seamless, and without judgement. Eventually, I had to switch companies due to adding another country Legend doesn’t cover. Again, I was treated with the utmost respect. I plan to to use Legend Tour in the future because of the stellar customer service!

tours vietnam and thailand

When is the best time to visit Vietnam & Thailand?

The best time for visiting Vietnam and Thailand is from October to April. The temperature is cool; the sky is clear from north to south in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the west coast of Thailand is more advantageous when compared to the east coast – the majority of the year is pleasant for travelers.

What are the top places that you should not miss when taking a tour to Vietnam & Thailand ?

Hanoi, Vietnam's capital and second-largest metropolis, is the country's political, economic, and cultural hub. Hanoi is a historic metropolis with traditions dating back over 1,000 years. The city contains several areas of ancient importance and beautiful scenery, earning it the moniker "land of millennium cultural relics."

The splendor of nature and artistic significance of Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a magnificent jewel in Vietnam's tiara. Visiting this area is like entering into a fairy tale, the stuff of tales, with dozens of towering limestone islands, karst grottoes, and quaint junk boats cruising the brilliant emerald waters.

Hoi An is a popular tourist attraction with a 1,500-year heritage. Therefore, Hoi An Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was previously named one of the top 10 tourist cities in Asia, attracting visitors from all over the world with its long white-sand beaches and many interesting activities.

Contrasting to the bright lights, swift pace, and loudness of certain Asian megacities, Bangkok's more laid-back feel and easily navigable public transit. Besides, the golden chedi of Buddhist temples and wats that provide seclusion around the city spring up among supermarkets and skyscraper structures.

Chiang Mai, Thailand's second-largest city, is the opposite of Bangkok. It is surrounded on all sides by rainforests and situated between the country's northern mountains. Visitors to Chiang Mai frequently spend learning about the region's rich cuisine, relaxing in the simple lodgings, and viewing the historic temple ruins.

Phuket Island

Phuket Island, which is situated on the sea trading route between China and India, is a fusion of several civilizations that have left their imprints. Due to the attractiveness of its amiably wonderful beaches and crystal-clear oceans, it is not only still the wealthiest district in Thailand but also vibrant and raucous.

The best itinerary for a Vietnam & Thailand tour?

You will first arrive in Ho Chi Minh City - the largest city in Vietnam with plenty of scenic spots and historical sites first. Then take a flight to Hoian to enjoy a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 1,500-year heritage then continue to take another flight to Hanoi - the country's political, economic, and cultural hub and Halong Bay - another UNESCO World Heritage Site and then transfer to Bangkok, Thailand. Here, there will be two options: Bangkok with Phuket if you are the people who prefer the beach or Bangkok with Chiang Mai if you are the people who prefer mountains & minority ethnic.

How many days should I spend for a tour to Vietnam & Thailand?

With a 7 – 10 days tour, Hanoi, Halong Bay (Vietnam), and Bangkok (Thailand) are the three best destinations for choosing on this trip. If you have 4, 5 days more, you can add Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam or Phuket (if you are keen on the beach) or Chiang Mai (if you prefer the mountain) in Thailand. In case you have a 15 – 20 days tour or more, you absolutely can visit Ninh Binh, Hue, and Mekong Delta in Vietnam and Phuket, Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai together.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally,  you will need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey and current visas to enter Vietnam and Cambodia. You will not need a visa to enter Thailand for the short duration of this tour. Please Note: Your passport should contain at least three blank visa pages.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, please contact a consulate or embassy of Vietnam, of Cambodia and Thailand to determine if entry visas are required.

Tauck has collaborated with VisaCentral in the US to assist our guests with processing and issuing their travel documents. If a guest opts to work with VisaCentral, their services are available online at www.visacentral.com/tauck . To speak directly with VisaCentral Customer Service, call 844-860-7199 (toll-free in the US) or email [email protected] .  All US citizens require a valid passport to enter Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, and that passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of travel. (Please note that although adult passports are valid for a full ten years, children's passports require renewal every five years.)  Your passport must also contain a minimum of at least 3 blank visa pages. Please be advised that that extra visa pages are no longer available for passports. If you need additional pages in order to comply, you must renew your passport even if your current passport has not expired.  If you are a United States citizen and do not have a valid passport, please contact the closest US passport agency or consult the US State Department web site for detailed information on how to obtain or renew your passport at: www.travel.state.gov .  A visa is not required for Thailand.  Visas are necessary for both Vietnam and Cambodia. Please note that these visas must be processed within 90 days of your arrival.  All fees will be listed on visa paperwork.  The visa fee, as well as any applicable consular fees and shipping fees, are not included in the tour cost. The visa application will include the amount of the visa fee, which varies by destination.  Additionally, you may elect to obtain a Vietnam e-visa online at https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/en and/or a Cambodian e-visa on line at www.evisa.gov.kh  Non-US citizens should contact the embassies or consulates of Vietnam, Cambodia & Thailand to determine what documentation is required.  We advise bringing a photocopy of your passport as well as 2 extra passport photos in case your passport is lost during the tour. Be sure to check the expiration of your passport. New passports and visas may take several weeks to obtain.  IMPORTANT NOTE: Failure to obtain ALL necessary documentation prior to your tour may result in being denied entry into a country, or delays in entry until proper documentation can be obtained. In consideration of the larger group (and to maintain our planned itinerary), travelers who have failed to obtain the necessary documentation in advance may need to remain at the airport, and could thus be responsible for arranging (and paying for) their own transportation to join the group. Tauck will not be responsible for obtaining any missing documentation, nor will Tauck be responsible for any expenses incurred, missed tour components or other losses resulting from the failure to obtain proper travel documents in advance.  Regardless of which visa service company is used, the application will require a summary of your Tauck itinerary, which we will be happy to provide. Please email [email protected].   Please note: Because a visa is an official document, Tauck cannot apply for a visa on your behalf, and we are very limited regarding the assistance we're able to provide. If you require help, we recommend working with a reputable visa service company as they can provide the highest level of assistance.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

Due to strictly enforced weight restrictions on the on-tour flights, luggage weight per person must not exceed 44 lbs (20 kg) and you are permitted only one piece of checked luggage. Luggage exceeding the allowable weight is subject to excess baggage charges, which may result in a considerable additional expense.

The maximum allowable weight for carry-on luggage is 15 lbs (6.8 kg), and the maximum allowable dimensions are 22" by 14" by 10" (55.9 cm by 35.6 cm by 25 cm).  These dimensions include all wheels, handles, pockets, etc. If these dimensions are exceeded, the carry-on piece will be checked.

Regulations within most airports require that customers handle their own luggage through customs.

Checked Luggage – General

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour. If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking  here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking  here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

This Southeast Asia tour is very active and includes 6 on-tour flights. You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain that may, at times, be rocky and muddy, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Southeast Asia is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion. Please Note: There are numerous steps on this itinerary. In addition to walking, various other modes of transportation used to highlight the different aspects of Southeast Asian culture and geography for this tour could include airplane, boat, sampan, cyclo and tuk-tuk (auto rickshaw).

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather in Southeast Asia is generally hot and humid year round with little fluctuation. Average high temperatures in Southeast Asia generally range from 65° to 90°F (18 to 32°C) in Hanoi to 85 to 95°F (29 to 35°C) in Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City, with high humidity throughout the year. Rainfall amounts are much heavier from May through October than they are from November though April.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website,  noaa.gov , by clicking  here .

What To Pack

The climate in Southeast Asia is hot and humid year round. We suggest that you pack lightweight, casual clothing. While it is quite rainy and hot for most of the year, our departure dates are always scheduled when weather will be optimal.

Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible. Casual, cotton clothing is recommended. Sturdy yet comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in are essential. For dining in the evening, and for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, you may wish to dress up a bit, but certainly be comfortable. Jackets for men are not required.

Valet laundry service is available throughout the entire tour. Hairdryers and irons and ironing boards are either located in your hotel room or are immediately available upon request.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Toiletries, sundries, and over-the-counter and prescription medications may either be difficult to find or not available in Southeast Asia.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey across Southeast Asia:

  • Casual, cotton clothing
  • An optional sports jacket for men
  • Casual yet elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Light sweater
  • Light waterproof jacket
  • Sturdy yet comfortable, walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Toiletries, sundries
  • Pre-moistened towelettes
  • Handkerchiefs
  • Antibacterial lotion
  • Medication for allergies/aspirin/upset stomach/diarrhea
  • Insect repellent
  • Travel alarm/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Camera, film, memory cards, chargers, batteries and other photography accessories
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

Take a dreamy Halong Bay cruise

Board a traditional Vietnamese junk boat and cruise the emerald waters and limestone karsts of Halong Bay. We’ll visit Tien Ong Cave and Cua Van Fishing Village, enjoy a swim at one of the golden beaches, then watch a cooking demonstration and the dazzling sunset on the boat, where we’ll sleep for the night.

Enjoy a Water Puppet performance in a local theater

The Water Puppet performance is a northern Vietnamese art form, which paints the story of rural life in Vietnam a thousand years ago. The puppeteers stand in waist-high water to represent flooded rice fields and you’ll be swept up in the legends they tell through their dancing puppets.

Visit Cua Van Fishing Village

We’ll visit the ancient Cua Van Fishing Village on our Halong Bay cruise, and stop to meet the locals who live in the traditional floating houses. It’s the largest fishing village in Halong Bay, with around 180 floating houses set on gentle waters surrounded by beautiful limestone mountains.

Help local farmers in Thanh Dong Organic Village

Our Local Specialists will take you to Thanh Dong Organic Village in Hoi An, where you’ll meet the local farmers and spend time learning about their daily working routines. You’ll also get to help the farmers in the garden and discover their unique methods that leave a positive impact on their environment.

Visit the UNESCO-listed Imperial Citadel in Hue

Jump on the back of a cyclo and take a journey to the Imperial Citadel in Hue, the former capital and home of the Nguyen emperors. You can enter the large square fortress and explore the ancient palaces and temples, and we’ll even take you inside the Purple Forbidden City.

Our top 5 things to do in Vietnam

Our Vietnam vacation packages reveal the magic of the country, from the magnificent Halong Bay and the ancient citadel of Hue, to the local farmers in Hoi An.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

Located in Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is the final resting place of President Ho Chi Minh, the iconic Vietnamese Revolutionary leader. Known to his people as ‘Uncle Ho’, his body is preserved in a glass case and protected by a military honor guard.

Temple of Literature

One of Hanoi’s most beautiful sites, the Temple of Literature is an ancient complex built in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius and scholars. It’s also home to the Imperial Academy, Vietnam’s first university and you can see the historic pavilions, turtle steles, courtyards, a lake of literature and the Well of Heavenly Clarity.

My Son Temples

The My Son Temples are a complex of ancient Hindu temples, built between the 4th and 14th century to worship the god Shiva. It was once the site of royal religious ceremonies and the burial place for Cham royalty, and today you can explore the ruins of this UNESCO-listed site.

Best museums in Vietnam

Our Vietnam escorted tours will reveal the country’s best museums, from the ancient My Son Temples to the resting place of President Ho Chi Minh.

One of Vietnam’s most famous dishes, pho is a noodle soup that’s loved all over the world. It’s made from a slow-stewed beef broth poured over rice noodles, and topped with slices of chicken or beef. You can also add a variety of herbs, sauces and chilli to your tastes.

Also known as rice paper spring rolls, goi cuon are light and fresh rolls with plenty of flavor. A rice paper wrapping is filled with bean sprouts, lettuce, meat or tofu and other crunchy vegetables. It’s best served with a sweet or spicy sauce for dipping.

Banh xeo is a thin crepe filled with shrimp, pork, bean sprouts and fresh herbs. It’s a classic northern Vietnamese dish with French influences, and the best way to eat it is cut it up in bite-sized pieces, roll it up in lettuce leaves and dunk it into the zesty side sauces.

Best food in Vietnam

An organised trip to Vietnam with Trafalgar will ensure you taste the best of Vietnam’s incredible cuisine, from warm bowls of pho to fresh goi cuon rolls.

I've traveled to 9 out of 10 countries in Southeast Asia. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes I made along the way.

  • I've traveled solo to nine countries in Southeast Asia.
  • I've made many mistakes, from traveling during monsoon season to forgetting to bring enough cash.
  • Travelers should make sure they plan ahead and research each country's culture.

Insider Today

Over the last two years, my journey as a travel enthusiast and Business Insider's travel reporter in Singapore has brought me to almost every country in Southeast Asia.

In total, there are 10 countries in Southeast Asia , and I've traveled to nine of them — Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei. Myanmar remains the only country in the region I have not visited, and while I am keen to explore it, I have held off on visiting because of the country's ongoing civil war.

I've watched the sun rise in Angkor Wat in Cambodia and cared for elephants in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I've explored the Bornean jungle in Brunei and crawled the Cu Chi Tunnels in southern Vietnam.

But it hasn't always been easy. I've made several mistakes traveling across the region , especially as a solo traveler. Here are five mistakes I made and how to avoid them.

1. Going during monsoon season and not planning for the weather.

tours vietnam and thailand

In July, I traveled to Thailand on a reporting trip to cover the budding cannabis industry . There, I was met with heavy rain nearly every day. In Bangkok, I was staying in a hostel in Chakkrawat , a district with narrow, meandering streets, which made it difficult to walk anywhere in the pouring rain.

I didn't plan for the weather, so I didn't have an umbrella or poncho with me and had to rush to get one at the last minute. I also had a packed itinerary with a lot of travel between meetings, which was a hassle in the constant downpour.

Before traveling to Southeast Asia, make sure to avoid two seasons — the monsoon season, which often comes with strong typhoons in countries like the Philippines, and the burning season, where farmers burn land for fertile soil. This is a common occurrence in countries like Laos, Thailand, and the island of Borneo, which is shared between Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

When I traveled to Laos in April last year during the burning season , most of my plans — including a hot air balloon ride — were canceled because of the thick smog. I also didn't have an N95 mask with me, and I ended up with a sore throat.

If you do plan to come during these seasons, make sure to pack accordingly and plan a flexible schedule.

2. Traveling during Ramadan and expecting the same practices everywhere.

tours vietnam and thailand

Having grown up in Singapore, I'm familiar with the practices during Ramadan , the holy month for Muslims, where they fast for most of the day. I studied Malay for seven years, and in school, I often fasted with my Muslim classmates and ate only in private.

Still, in many cities in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia , non-Muslims are free to dine in public, so long as they do so respectfully. But on my trip to Brunei in April — at the height of the burning season and in the middle of Ramadan — there were more practices I needed to observe.

Most restaurants were closed, and diners weren't allowed to eat there even if they were open — only take-out was allowed. Eating in public was a major faux pas even for non-Muslims, and if you want to drink some water, you can only do so when nobody is around.

It wasn't easy, especially as Brunei was sweltering at 100 degrees Fahrenheit on some days. I made do by returning to the hotel for lunch and grabbing a big dinner with the locals at the night market after they had broken their fast.

3. Not packing enough modest outfits when visiting temples and mosques.

tours vietnam and thailand

Southeast Asia is pretty liberal, and you can wear whatever you want in many places. In popular destinations like Phuket, Thailand, and Bali, Indonesia, lots of tourists walk around in bikini tops and shorts, and locals mostly tolerate it.

But there are certain places you do need to cover up, like places of worship, which include temples and mosques. When I visited Angkor Wat — the famed temple complex in Cambodia — in February last year, I found some tourists being told off by the local tour guides for wearing shorts and tank tops — "Tomb Raider" style.

I've learned to err on the right side of caution and bring a sarong wherever I go. It's an easy way to cover up and make an outfit more modest when you need to.

4. Forgetting to pack medication, especially when I plan to eat street food.

tours vietnam and thailand

Southeast Asia has some of the world's most flavorful food. In every country, you can find food that is cheap and delicious, and that includes Singapore , the world's most expensive city. In countries like Malaysia and Vietnam, street food dishes can cost as little as a dollar.

I eat mostly street food when I travel in Southeast Asia, so medicine for tummy-related illnesses is a must. I've only gotten sick twice from eating street food — and it was the same dish both times— and unfortunately, those were the few times I didn't have medicine with me.

I'm a pretty adventurous eater. I've eaten everything from pufferfish stew to frog porridge and dishes made with intestines off the street. I've learned to wash the utensils provided before digging in and make sure the food is cooked to order and heated up before being served.

5. Relying on my card and not bringing enough cash with me.

tours vietnam and thailand

In Singapore, I don't really use cash and often use Apple Pay, mobile payments, and cards. But I've found that many stores in other countries in Southeast Asia only accept cash.

For example, on my third trip to Vietnam, I spent an hour trying to make payment via bank transfer after the staff at a luxury perfume shop — which was selling items priced upwards of $200 — informed me at the last minute that they didn't accept card or contactless payment.

I've also found the majority of street vendors in the region only accept mobile payment — which is limited to local banks — or cash. I've learned to change a considerable amount of money before leaving the airport and keep whatever I didn't use for my next trip.

'The Sympathizer': From Vietnam's war-torn spots to LA streets, inside HBO show's filming locations

LOS, ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: HBO's upcoming series 'The Sympathizer ' takes viewers on a captivating journey that transcends geographical boundaries.

While the series itself grapples with themes of war and identity, the production is spanned across multiple continents, bringing the narrative to life with authentic settings.

The story is filled with the beautiful backdrops of the bustling streets of Los Angeles, California, where the show explores the struggles of Vietnamese refugees adjusting to a new life.

The production also ventured to Thailand, capturing the essence of Southeast Asia. But the journey doesn't end there. Filming locations even include Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, offering a glimpse into the country's rich history and cultural tapestry.

The majority of filming for 'The Sympathizer' took place in Thailand, a Southeast Asian nation renowned for its stunning beaches, majestic royal palaces, and ornate temples adorned with statues.

A popular destination for tourists, filmmakers, and beach lovers alike, Thailand offers a vibrant tapestry of experiences.

Beyond its visual appeal, the country provides a plethora of activities for visitors, including snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, and parasailing. These diverse elements likely played a role in the filmmakers' decision to choose Thailand as a key filming location.

Los Angeles, California

The production team also set up shop in Los Angeles, California, capturing the essence of this dynamic American city.

The cast and crew journeyed to Los Angeles to film specific scenes that presumably required the unique urban landscape the city offers.

Los Angeles is a popular filming location due to its vast array of settings, from sprawling skylines to iconic landmarks.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Some scenes were filmed in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, adding a layer of authenticity to the series.

The production unit and actors made the trip to capture the city's distinct atmosphere.

Ho Chi Minh City boasts a rich history, reflected in its French colonial-era buildings, ancient pagodas, bustling markets, vibrant nightlife, and delectable local cuisine.

Filming here likely allowed the series to portray a more nuanced and realistic representation of the Vietnamese cultural experience.

Santa Clarita, California

While not as prominently featured as the other locations, reports suggest that filming also took place in Santa Clarita, California.

This city, nestled within Los Angeles County, offers a suburban backdrop that might have served a specific purpose within the narrative.

By filming across these diverse locations, the creators of 'The Sympathizer' have undoubtedly woven a visually captivating and culturally rich tapestry for viewers to enjoy.

How to stream 'The Sympathizer'?

Catch 'The Sympathizer' exclusively on Max starting this Sunday, April 14.

Plans for the streaming platform are available to fit your needs, with monthly and yearly options.

Choose from the 'With Ads' plan at $9.99/month or $99.99/year, the 'Ad-Free' plan at $15.99/month or $149.99/year, or the 'Ultimate Ad-Free' plan at $19.99/month or $199.99/year. Binge away!

Thailand moots Schengen-like visa for 6 Southeast Asian countries

In recent months Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has been discussing the proposal with his counterparts as part of efforts to attract long-haul travelers and boost tourism, Bloomberg reported.

The joint visa would enable tourists to explore all six Southeast Asian countries on a single visa, the Bangkok Post reported.

A Schengen visa allows holders to travel in 27 member-countries for a maximum of 90 days.

Last year the six Southeast Asian nations welcomed a combined 70 million foreign tourists, according to official data.

Malaysia and Thailand, who waived visas for Chinese and Indian tourists, received the highest numbers.

Angkor Wat: This awe-inspiring monument, often hailed as one of the Eight Wonders of the World, stands as a testament to devotion and architectural brilliance. It's the largest religious structure ever constructed, encompassing temples, pagodas, statues, palaces, and chambers. Built during the height of the Khmer Empire's power, Angkor Wat was dedicated to King Suryavarman II. It typically takes three days to fully appreciate the complex, and Angkor Wat serves as your gateway to the wonders of Angkor culture. Note: The site is approximately a 40-minute drive from Siem Reap's city center.

Angkor Thom: Encircled by a grand moat, Angkor Thom resembles a fortified citadel more than a religious site. Four monumental gates grant access in each cardinal direction: north, south, east, and west. The fifth, known as the Victory Gate, leads eastward from the Angkor Thom Royal Palace grounds. Once, each gate was connected by a causeway, but today, only the south gate retains its watery approach.

Ta Prohm: Situated in the western part of the Angkor Wat Complex, Ta Prohm boasts a unique charm. Its massive stones blend seamlessly with the towering trees that have overtaken the site. This temple was commissioned by King Jayavarman VII as part of his ambitious monastery and university construction program. Its enchanting and somewhat mysterious atmosphere made it a fitting location for scenes in the movie "Tomb Raider." Note: The best time to visit is in the afternoon when the enormous trees provide welcome shade.

Bayon Temple: Built in the late 12th to early 13th century under King Jayavarman VII's reign, Bayon Temple is renowned for its iconic stone faces. From a distance, it appears as a mountain, but as you approach, the multitude of serene stone visages becomes apparent. Second only to Angkor Wat in significance, Bayon Temple holds a special place in the hearts of those who explore its labyrinthine corridors.

Banteay Srei & Land Mine Museum Discovery with Tonle Sap Lake Sunset: After breakfast, we'll explore the captivating Banteay Srei, a red sandstone marvel adorned with intricate carvings. Learn about Cambodia's land mine issue at the Land Mine Museum, discovering how they're detected and defused.

Visit a nearby village to taste palm candies and rice wine, then enjoy an ox cart ride through scenic countryside. Reach Tonle Sap Lake, Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, and take a boat to Kampong Phluk to explore mangrove forests.

Start your day at 8:00 AM as our guide picks you up from your hotel and takes you to Thailand's largest flower market, Pak Klong Talad. Stroll through the market, sample local snacks, watch flower garland making, and even try your hand at creating your own garland and lotus flower decorations, following the Thai tradition for temple visits.

Next, hop on a tuk-tuk to visit one of Bangkok's oldest temples, Wat Pho, famous for its impressive 45-meter (14-foot) reclining Buddha and the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. At 9:00 AM, you'll have the unique opportunity to witness and listen to the soothing chants of the monks.

Following Wat Pho, visit the Grand Palace, home to the revered Emerald Buddha statue, which is actually made of jade or jasper. Then, embark on a longtail boat ride along the picturesque canals of Thonburi to experience local life, with a stop at Wat Arun along the way.

Return to land and enjoy a TukTuk ride to explore the vibrant Chinatown. Stroll along Yaowarat Road, where shops offer a variety of goods, including gold. Explore the bustling Talad Kao Market, known for its diverse selection of fresh and dried fruits, Chinese herbs, and culinary delights.

Finally, we'll drop you off at your choice of MBK (a popular shopping mall), the weekend market (open only on weekends), or your hotel. Please note the dress code for temple visits, and be aware that the monks' chanting ritual occurs in the morning and may be subject to change.

Explore Ayutthaya's Rich Heritage on a Day Trip: Embark on a fascinating day trip from bustling Bangkok to the historic city of Ayutthaya, Thailand's former capital. Located just 76 kilometers north of the capital, Ayutthaya is a captivating destination steeped in history.

Founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, Ayutthaya served as Thailand's capital for over four centuries. During this excursion, you'll discover a wealth of ancient ruins and artworks that bear witness to its storied past.

Highlights of your journey include:

Wat Sri Sanphet: This remarkable monastery once served as a royal palace during King Ramathibodi I's reign.

Wat Phananchoeng (Wat Mahathad): Home to a revered 19-meter-tall Buddha image, this sacred site is beloved by Ayutthaya's residents.

Wat Mahathad: Explore this iconic temple, known for its Buddha head intertwined with tree roots, a hauntingly beautiful spot for photographs.

Wat Yai Chaimongkhol: Visit one of Ayutthaya's largest chedis, constructed by King Naresuan in the late 16th century. Discover numerous Buddha images and a serene garden.

Additionally, you'll enjoy a boat trip to Bang Pa-In, the former Royal Summer Residence, showcasing exquisite Thai architecture.

Chiang Mai Street Food Tour: Explore Chiang Mai, a city of stunning landscapes and a rich culinary heritage that blends traditional and modern elements. Known as a food lover's paradise, Chiang Mai offers a unique taste of Northern Thai cuisine, influenced by Burmese and Lao flavors.

Sample an array of dishes, from Northern Thai noodle soup and savory stir-fries to iconic favorites like Phad Thai, khao man gai (chicken rice), and khao soi. Satisfy your sweet cravings with Thai desserts and fresh tropical fruits.

Choose between morning and afternoon tours, each including a delightful lunch or dinner. Immerse yourself in the diverse and delicious flavors that define Chiang Mai's culinary scene.

Thailand leads push for six-nation visa to attract more tourists

Plan could encourage more business travelers and trade.

Tourists visit Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan in Bangkok in January.

Thailand is steering an initiative for a joint-visa program with countries that together hosted about 70 million tourists last year as Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin ramps up initiatives to attract more long-haul and high-spending travelers.

The plan is meant to ensure seamless mobility for travelers among the six neighboring countries.

With most leaders positively responding to the single-visa concept, tourism-reliant Thailand aims to generate more revenue per traveler and cushion its economy from headwinds such as sluggish exports and weak global demand that’s hurt its manufacturing industry.

The six Southeast Asian nations reported a combined 70 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2023, according to official data.

Thailand and Malaysia accounted for more than half of the tally, generating about $48 billion in tourism revenue.

The single-visa is the most-ambitious among Srettha’s lineup of tourism initiatives but targeted for the long-term.

The industry has served the country well, accounting for about 20% of total jobs and making up about 12% to the nation’s $500 billion economy.

Barring the pandemic years, tourism has flourished and provided a cushion against a slump in manufacturing and exports, the traditional bulwarks of the economy.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin poses for photographs with visitors during an event to welcome inbound tourists from China at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok on Sept. 23, 2023.

The tourism industry is upbeat, with Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, a former president of the Thai Hotels Association, saying "a common visa could entice long-haul travelers to make an easier decision.” The visa validity will need to be extended to 90 days from the usual 30-day period to make it attractive, she added.

Srettha’s administration has set a goal of attracting 80 million tourists by 2027. And since taking power about seven months ago, his government has signed a reciprocal visa waiver deal with China — Thailand’s largest market for tourists — and offered temporary visa waivers for travelers from India, Taiwan and Kazakhstan.

It’s also mulling a plan to open casinos inside large entertainment complexes, and event-based tourism will help the country generate more revenue.

If done right, the benefits of visa-free travel won’t be confined to tourism alone as ease of travel would be a boon for business travelers and trade, according to Bill Barnett, managing director of hospitality and property consultancy C9 Hotelworks.

But a Schengen-type visa may be an uphill task given ASEAN's poor track record in expediting multilateral policy framework and the group’s standing as a talk shop.

"Country by country seems to be the best way to do it,” Barnett said. "Bilateral agreements, where governments are leading the way for this type of thing, make a lot of sense as they are looking outward and not inward.”

For a joint visa plan, approvals have to be coordinated, and the absence of standard immigration criteria among participating nations, unlike the European Union, can pose challenges, according to Thitinan Pongsudhirak, professor at Chulalongkorn University’s political science faculty.

ASEAN, as a grouping is a divided body with a poor immigration record, he said.

With Srettha being a neophyte in politics, he may lack the clout to push through the visa proposal, Thitinan said.

"All the various things he’s been trying to do, I see it as picking low-hanging fruits and picking fruits off the ground,” Thitinan said. "Sometimes fruits on the ground are rotten.”
