The Ocean at the End of the Lane on tour

based on the novel by Neil Gaiman, adapted by Joel Horwood

Booking and details

Age guidance: 12+ yrs.

In the West End from 11 October – 25 November

From the imagination of Neil Gaiman, best-selling author of Coraline , Good Omens and The Sandman , comes the National Theatre’s major new stage adaptation of The Ocean at the End of the Lane .

This thrilling adventure of fantasy, myth and friendship, is a five-star spectacular which blends magic with memory in a tour-de-force of storytelling that takes audiences on an epic journey to a childhood once forgotten and the darkness that lurks at the very edge of it.

Returning to his childhood home, a man finds himself standing beside the pond of the old Sussex farmhouse where he used to play. He’s transported to his 12th birthday when his remarkable friend Lettie claimed it wasn’t a pond, but an ocean – a place where everything is possible…

Plunged into a magical world, their survival depends on their ability to reckon with ancient forces that threaten to destroy everything around them.

Based on the works of best-selling author Neil Gaiman, who also wrote hits like Good Omens, the tale follows a man as he is transported back to his 12th birthday while visiting his childhood home.

As the pond beside his house becomes an ocean, he and his friend Lettie enter a magical world where they have to reckon with ancient forces that threaten to destroy everything around them as they struggle to survive. Be aware that this show is not suitable for children under the age of 12, as it contains some sensitive subject matter, and children under five won't be admitted.

The show will be kicking off its tour of the UK in Oxford later in June and travelling up and down the country before ending up in London for a limited West End run from 11th October.

Read on for the full list of dates and venues, plus everything you need to know about getting tickets now.

Great energy, amazing concert. All band members are really engaged with the audience during the show and it gives great interactions. Repeating myself but the energy of it all was unreal, one of the best live shows I've been to, made me apreciate their studio albums even more.

First off, awesome show.

That said, the singer of The Ocean had lost his voice and while the music was often enough to be great, you could tell that it was a little off. Repetitive without the singer to say the least. A band like Animals as Leaders, without vocals at all, forces one to be more creative but when you rely on a singer to be present you can get away with a little repetition. On the encore they had the singer from Herod which worked out great.

A shout out to Sâver and Herod which both were great. I didn't really care for Årabrot at all, and I usually go for that kind of stuff, but it was a little too much. The woman in the band was amazing though.

All in all a wonderful show and I look forward to seeing The Ocean (with a full band) in the future.

Great concert. Powerful performance. Lead singer was very energetic. Drummer was simply unreal. All band members in superb harmony. Perfect sound quality. Engaged crowd that turned up en masse to this small venue (Voodoo Lounge) that we have visited many times. Support acts Herod and Downfall of Gaia were also very strong performers.

The Ocean At The End Of The Lane UK Tour Review

Neil Gaiman is a master in storytelling. His words transport readers to another life, another time, or another world and take you on an adventure that sticks with you for a lifetime. He weaves mystery, horror, thriller and fantasy into a story that is like no other that you have read. To say I’m a fan is an understatement, but the success of his stories have spanned across decades and evolved into adaptions that bring these magical worlds to life.

The Ocean At The End Of The Lane is a tale of the mystery and mundane that has been adapted by the wonders at the National Theatre to create a staggeringly powerful play. After a successful run in London (that had me completely gutted I missed!) I was so pleased to see it was heading on tour.

the ocean tour uk

The Ocean At The End Of The Lane follows the story of Boy. An unassuming 12 year old that enjoys immersing himself in a book. One evening after witnessing his families lodger die, he meets Lettie, the young girl who lives on a nearby farm and is anything but ordinary. As Lettie introduces him to her world, Boy inadvertently unleashes Ursula, a flea/monster that can create worm holes and ruin lives. In his venture to rid his world of Ursula, Boy must truly understand himself and find out his place in the world around him amongst the waves of grief and sorrow that is found in real life.

Boy was brought to life by Keir Ogilvy. His expressions and stage presence transported you into his world and mind whilst Millie Hikasa played Lettie, the headstrong young girl who could whip up a spell and stand her ground. But the star was definitely Charlie Brooks as Ursula. She was captivating and commanded the stage in a way that you would expect an other worldly creature to do. Her energy to bounce around stage, fly in the air and go from manic to serene was a masterpiece in acting.

the ocean tour uk

I adored the way that the supporting cast seemed to always be on stage. From moving props, to lifting the lead cast, to being that ominous creature just lingering nearby. They created monsters, moving parts, and puppets that were borderline terrifying. The staging and puppetry truly brought the show to life and injected it with a boost that places it head and shoulders above other plays. From magic touches to staggering monsters made out of the whole cast, each magical and terrifying element of this show has been worked on meticulously to create a play that is probably one of the best I’ve ever seen. The staging envelopes the characters and the striking lighting and subtle soundtrack allows the audience to feel transported into the world on stage.

The Ocean At The End Of The Lane takes you on a story like no other. It allows you to escape into childhood, grieve for those you have lost, and accept those that might be different to us. It’s a show that I would see tomorrow if I had the opportunity to and a show that needs to remain the world for everyone to see.

REVIEW: The Ocean at the End of the Lane (UK Tour, Glasgow)

Updated: Dec 6, 2023

29 August 2023

King's Theatre, Glasgow

A magical piece of theatre.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman was the winner of the Book of the Year at the 2013 National Book Awards and has sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide. As a fan of Gaiman's work (Stardust, Coraline, Good Omens, The Sandman) I have somehow managed to let 'Ocean' pass me by. The stage adaptation had a very successful six-month run in London's West end, but as the UK tour arrives in Glasgow, I remain oblivious to the plot. I expect nothing more than to be transported into Neil Gaiman's incredible imagination.

On entering the auditorium, the curtains are open and the set is dark and deep. Glimpses of a mysterious forest peek out from the wings, and the audience peer at the stage, already intrigued and inquisitive while taking their seats. Throughout the show this set comes to life in a variety of fantastic, magical, visual ways. Never have I seen depth, dark and light used so successfully on stage. The set design by Fly Davis, along with lighting by Paule Constable, come together to create a spellbinding backdrop, but also provides the perfect conditions for the ensemble cast and puppets to seemingly appear out of the depths of nowhere. It's expertly done.

The puppets are not of the Kermit the Frog nor Big Bird variety; rather they are delicate, intricate, eerie monsters. Supernatural beings that manage to be both ominous, but also hypnotic and beautiful. The puppets and the cast themselves move with fluidity, purpose, and a sort of otherworldly elegance. The choreography from beginning to end is simply stunning and really adds to the mystical atmosphere.

The fantasy elements, the illusions and striking visuals make for a magical piece of theatre, but there is a story of friendship and of growing up at the heart of the show.

"Returning to his childhood home, a man finds himself standing beside the pond of the old Sussex farmhouse where he used to play. He's transported to his 12th birthday when his remarkable friend Lettie claimed it wasn't a pond, but an ocean – a place where everything is possible... Plunged into a magical world, their survival depends on their ability to reckon with ancient forces that threaten to destroy everything around them."

The book is described by Gaiman as ' not autobiographical' but at the same time there was a farmhouse, down a lane, that went past his house... and the stories that surround it and its occupants have been swirling in his head since he was 12 years old. He admits that 'Ocean' is his most personal story, and it does feel intimate and heartfelt.

Keir Ogilvy (Boy) and Millie Hikasa (Lettie Hempstock) are tremendous in the lead roles, guiding us from a seemingly ordinary farmhouse and duckpond, into the mystical world of The Edges. Playing fairly young children, they both bring a light enthusiasm to the characters. Authentic and likeable, watching their story unfold the audience must decide for themselves what is truth and what is fantasy. And that is the question we are left with: Can our childhood memories really be trusted?

All the cast are strong, but the success of this piece comes from the way they are directed, choreographed and rehearsed to perfection, working together to seamlessly move the set and props around, from doors, to tables and even themselves - the timing and coordination, the trust between every actor on stage is obvious and makes for a bewitching production.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a magical piece of theatre, performed flawlessly. If you want to see what can be achieved in theatrical production and design, this is it.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane is suitable for ages 12+.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Gary Wilson not on board with Tour Championship change ahead of debut

author image

2024 Spreadex World Grand Prix - Day 5

Gary Wilson makes his Tour Championship debut on Monday but is not convinced it should be in the new 12-man format and his opponent agrees.

The tournament has been extended from eight to 12 players this season, with players ranked 5-12 on the one-year list starting in round one and the winners joining the top four in the quarter-finals.

It is certainly a messier format than previous years and is a step away from the neatness of 32 players qualifying for the World Grand Prix, 16 at the Players Championship and then eight at the Tour.

On the other side of the coin, snooker fans are being handed more matches and some brilliant ties in the first round, including Mark Allen taking on John Higgins and Wilson facing Mark Selby , but the Tyneside Terror is not on board with the changes.

The new format came after a surprise line-up last year saw the likes of Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, Higgins, Neil Robertson and Mark Williams all miss out on the Tour Championship, with crowds in Hull struggling as a result.

The event is now in Manchester with an expanded field, helping to make sure the big names are involved, but Wilson is not convinced it was the right thing to do.

‘I don’t agree, to be honest,’ Wilson told Metro.co.uk . ‘I never did agree from the start. I think everyone’s come to the conclusion that it’s because big players missed out last season and they’ve tried to get them in this season.

2024 Spreadex World Grand Prix - Day 5

‘I think that’s what it is, that’s how I see it. If that’s the case, you wonder why events are set up the way they’re set up. If players miss out they just change the format anyway. Events are set up to attract the top players, but if things don’t go to plan then things change so the top players still get to play in them.

‘It feels like any tournament, and we know this is a commercial world, but any tournament is there for the top players and if it doesn’t quite work out that way we’ll find a way to get you in anyway.

‘I don’t really agree with 12, I think it should stay at eight, it sounds and looks right. 32 [at the Grand Prix], 16 [Players Championship] and 8 for the last one, it’s added more complication and I don’t really know if it’s added any benefit yet.’

Wilson is number six on the one-year list so would have qualified in either format, but Selby at number 11 would have missed out in the old set-up.

However, the Jester from Leicester is also not sure the change was the right thing to do, despite arguing against himself.

‘I think 12 is not really here nor there,’ Selby told Metro.co.uk . ‘I think you either do eight or you do 16, but you can’t do 16 because that’s the Players Championship and it would be like another Masters, really.

2023 UK Championship - Day 7

‘I think it was good at eight and they should have kept it at eight. I know that would have meant me not getting in, but so be it. If I’m not in it that’s only because I’ve not been one of the eight best players this year.

‘With players having to win matches to get to play the top four, it defeats the object of what the tournament is, for me. ‘

Wilson, like most players, doesn’t have a great record against Selby but does hold a memorable victory over him at the World Championship in 2019.

However, the 38-year-old feels that is bordering on ancient history now and wants to create more recent positive memories against the four-time world champ.

‘He’s one of the toughest to play against and beat, he doesn’t give you anything,’ said Wilson of Selby. ‘You know you’ve got to play at a very good standard to have any chance, so it’s going to be tough.

Cazoo World Snooker Championship 2023 - Day Eight

‘That win was a few years ago, nearly five years ago now. At the time it was a very good win and I had a good run, but that is five years ago, time moves on quickly.

‘If that’s all I’m going to be remembered by in terms of Mark Selby, that’s not what I want. Great player, it’s going to be tough but if I can play anything like I know I can then I’ve got a chance.’

It’s been a fantastic season for Wilson, defending his Scottish Open title and winning the Welsh Open for the first time, which has booked his place at the Tour Championship and the top 16 for the Crucible.

It’s unquestionably the most successful period of his career, but it is fair to say he isn’t getting carried away.

‘I’m not feeling particularly anything, to be honest, I’m just treating this as just another tournament,’ he said. ‘I don’t want to sound boring but it’s just another tournament and I’m doing what I need to do as normal.

‘I never have got too excited. Maybe it’s because I think I’ve generally underachieved a bit. Generally when I turn up I know I’ve not performed to the level I’d like to, so you get to the point where you’re not going to get excited for anything.

‘You just turn up, try your best and see what happens. Obviously I am doing better lately, but I’m still not excited. Maybe that’s age, maybe that’s experience, but I just go into events, try as hard as I can and prepare as best I can. I don’t get excited by much these days, I don’t know whether that’s a good or a bad thing, it’s the way it is.

‘Nothing’s really changed that much enjoyment-wise, I’m on a plateau. I don’t really get excited for anything. It’s more like a job. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but at the same time I would like to enjoy things a lot more.

‘I’m doing alright with what I’ve got, I’m making the most of it, I don’t want to grumble. It would be lovely to go out and enjoy every occasion and every event, but it’s not realistic for me and I’ve learned to accept that.’

Wilson and Selby play their best-of-19 match over two sessions at 1pm on Monday and Tuesday this week.
