If you come in warmer weather, make sure to visit the Boxerwood Nature Center and Woodland Gardens. The pretty landscaping will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale. Kids will enjoy exploring the pretty gardens as well.

Other highlights include the Stonewall Jackson House and the Col-Alto Mansion. The mansion has been transformed into an inn where you can stay. It’s situated on beautiful grounds and features 86 rooms. Ten or those rooms are originals that have been carefully restored.

Middleburg is located just 40 minutes from Washington D.C., making it another Virginia tourist attraction that you can couple with a visit to D.C. This picturesque old town is the epitome of old Southern riches. It looks like something out of a storybook.

You’ll find rolling green hills, white picket fences, and horses galore. If your kids like horseback riding, you’ll find plenty of opportunities here. Middleburg’s historic old town offers some pretty brick walkways, historic buildings, and a pretty main street.

Middleburg has a bit of a sleepy vibe, making this an excellent spot to scope out if you’re ready for a quieter family weekend with older kids. The best time to come is in the spring. This is steeplechase season, and thousands of people gather to enjoy a drink while watching the races.

Roanoke is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering you easy access to city living while surrounded by nature. This makes an excellent hub for exploring the Appalachian Mountains if you’re an outdoorsy family.

Roanoke itself offers plenty of activities like paddling, hiking, and climbing. Roanoke is also great for biking. The city has been voted one of the most bike-friendly areas in the country.

If you’re tired of land and want to get on the water, head to a nearby river for kayaking or canoeing. Roanoke also has interesting underground sights, like the Natural Bridge Caverns. If you have little kids, head to the Mill Mountain Zoo. They’ll love identifying the wildlife there.

Roanoke is also an excellent spot for shopping. You’ll find the usual department stores and chain retailers and have the opportunity to discover original boutiques. The farmer’s market and antique shops are worth visiting for unique souvenirs.

Yorktown is yet another Virginia destination that offers a heavy dose of history. In this case, it’s Yorktown Battlefield, a famous revolutionary war site. It’s where George Washington won the war and is open for tours all year.

That said, the city has far more to offer than history. Head to the waterfront and explore the beach. One fun family activity is taking a sailing tour down the York River. These charter tips also give you a chance to see dolphins.

When you’re done sightseeing and ready for a bite to eat, take the family to the Historic Riverwalk Landing. You’ll find a slew of fantastic seafood restaurants dishing up fresh-caught fish. If it’s warm weather, you can also pack a picnic and enjoy your food with a view of the river.

Richmond perfectly straddles the line of history and the modern-day. The city features many sights dating back to the Civil War and Colonial times. However, it is also a buzzing modern hub full of fun things.

Take a visit to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts or explore the hip area of Carytown for yummy bites and boutique shopping. Are you looking for some nature? Visit the Maymont mansion and grounds, featuring gorgeous Japanese and Italian gardens.

Richmond is also a dream for families that love to eat! Check out the Kuba Kuba restaurant for yummy Cuban cuisine, for example, or sample a milkshake at the Village Cafe. Parents might be interested in trying the many craft brewery beers made right in the city.

Other points of interest include the Science Museum of Virginia, The Virginia Holocaust Museum, and the Edgar Allan Poe Museum. The Richmond Arts District is also a great spot to shop for souvenirs and mingle with locals.

Charlottesville is the former home of Founding Father Thomas Jefferson. While you’re here, make sure to visit the University of Virginia campus and the president’s former home, Monticello. Both are noteworthy for their architectural splendor.

The highlight of this little college town is the Downtown Mall. This brick-paved pedestrian area offers restaurants, bars, and shops—including a great toy store. When you’re ready to get out of the city, head to the nearby James River or Blueridge Mountains for tubing, canoeing, or hiking.

When the parents are ready for a drink, the nearby vineyards are worth visiting. They offer plenty of rolling hills and outdoor space, giving kids a place to let loose while parents enjoy a drink. Come in the spring or fall to make the most of the outdoor space.

If you want to take a little step outside of Charlottesville, head to Montpelier. It is just a short drive north of the city and is the old home of former U.S. President James Madison. Book a tour to learn more about how he lived. Also nearby is the former president of James Monroe, Highland.

Mount Vernon is a great day trip from Alexandria. The estate is the former home of famous U.S. President George Washington, making this a great pitstop if you’re looking for something educational for the kids.

Book one of the mansion tours to learn all you can about this beautiful place. You can ogle Martha Washington’s jewelry collection while kids are sure to get a kick out of seeing Washington’s wooden dentures. You can also visit Washington’s tomb while you’re here.

The house dates back to the 1700s. You’ll have the chance to see artisans practicing traditional crafts from those days, like grinding corn, spinning, and weaving. There are also old plantations nearby, providing a valuable opportunity to educate kids about this aspect of American history.

Wear athletic clothes and sneakers, as the trip requires a fair amount of walking. You can then engage in more active activities, like boating and biking. The estate offers beautiful scenery, with woodlands, fields, and lakes.

If your little ones love the water and big ships, Norfolk is a must-see on your Virginia itinerary. The coastal city is home to the U.S. navy’s oldest port. You can marvel at ships that served in the Second World War, like the USS Wisconsin.

To learn more about the port, visit the Hampton Roads Naval Museum or the Nauticus National Maritime Center. You can also get out on the water yourself with a boat tour. Finish up with a visit to Ocean View Beach Park; pack a picnic, stroll the boardwalk, and collect seashells.

If your children are interested in the creatures of the great blue deep, take them to the National Maritime Center. The highlight is undoubtedly the Touch Tank, where you can get up close and personal with underwater critters like starfish, hermit crabs, and urchins.

The Best Virginia Getaways for Families

The countdown to Spring Break and Summer Vacation is on for kids in Virginia! And if you're looking to stay local, Virginia has so many family-friendly getaways that all ages will enjoy.

I have 11 Virginia destinations for you and your family to try this year. These are the best Virginia destinations we've tried with our kiddos, and they are fun in any season. Each one of these Virginia getaways has been approved by my kids. While they have been 6 or younger on each vacation, these are Virginia resorts and hotels are surrounded by fun for all ages. The best part? All of these spots are 3 & half hours or less from Richmond.

1. Hot Springs, Virginia: Opening in 1766, The Homestead Resort is located on 2,300 acres in the Allegheny Mountains & it’s hosted 23 presidents! It’s just under 3 hours from Richmond, so it’s the perfect getaway for families. 

We love the historical aspect of The Homestead Resort and their resort activities. You can pick from guided hikes, zip lining, horseback riding, skiing & more. Our favorites are the Smore’s Express, fly fishing & putt putt. Also, I highly recommend a spring/summer getaway because the outdoor pool is so much fun - little kids’ splash zone, lazy river & water slides!

Check out the events calendar before booking your stay. If you’re visiting during a holiday, there will be lots of festivities like resort BBQs, concerts, games, etc. 

Reserve a first floor room in the Deluxe Garden Wing. The rooms are larger & the French doors go directly to the lawn. Our kids loved running around outside our room. 

Make dinning reservations when you book your stay. If you want to eat at The Jefferson, select an earlier dining time. We also loved Woody’s & the main dining room.

2. Cape Charles, Virginia: The charming beach town of Cape Charles is located on Virginia's Eastern Shore, and it has about 5 blocks of beachfront on the Chesapeake Bay . It 's Virginia's best beach for families because of the calm, shallow water.

While most families stay in beach rentals, Hotel Cape Charles  is a boutique hotel located ~3 blocks from the beach. This hotel offers complimentary breakfast, beach towels & chairs for guests. You can also rent your golf cart through this hotel if you are staying 2 or more nights.

I love Hotel Cape Charles for quick getaways because it has everything you need - you don't need to pack any bear gear. We only stay on the first floor, since we need 2 queen beds and the hotel doesn't have an elevator. Climbing the stairs is rough with tired kids! The first floor rooms also open into a large courtyard. This was really nice once we put the kids to sleep, we could enjoy the outdoor space without waking them up.

Heads up: the water is usually too cold to swim in between November and April. But it definitely depends on your preference and the current weather.

3. Irvington, Virginia : Located on Carter's Creek, The Tides Inn  has a casual, but elevated style.The backside of the resort has water views from every spot - the outside dining area of Chesapeake Restaurant, the lawn, the pool, and Fish Hawk. Not all rooms have river views, so if this is a priority to you, make sure you book one with water views instead of garden views.

The resort  offers complimentary activities . Bikes are available for all guests without a fee- they have 12 inch bikes and up, plus there are bikes with baby seats on the back. They have yard games like cricket and bocci ball, and there are board games in the hall next to the lobby. You can also ride watercraft like kayaks, canoes and paddle boards. The Tides Inn Marina  office has maps of Carter's Creek and a guide to wildlife you can see around the peninsula.

Bayside Explorer Kids Club  is a program created to inspire and entertain children ages 4-12 with supervised activities around the resort and Carter's Creek. Activities such as painting, nature excursions & history tours are from 9am-2pm daily. This is for resort guests only, and there is an additional cost to participate in the programs.

I also highly recommend trying one of the excursions. We tried the oyster excursion when my children were 4 years old and 2 years old, and we absolutely loved it! Captain Will taught us so much, and we got to learn a ton about oysters and the bay.

4. Rice, Virginia: Sandy River is not your typical hotel experience. This laid back adventure resort has glamping tipis & log cabins. As a family of 4, we stayed in The Thunder Bird with a king bed & queen futon. The tipis have a variety of bedding options, bathrooms, a kitchenette, TV & heated floors! You also get a fire pit, grill, chairs & a picnic table.

Sandy River Outdoor Adventures offers paddling boarding, zip lining & mountain biking. You can try boating & fishing on Sandy River Reservoir - it’s 740 acres & full of wildlife. The outdoor pool is also heated, so you can enjoy it most of the year (closed November to beginning of March). While you can visit just for activities, staying on property gives you a 20% discount on all adventures activities!  

Sandy River Distillery is also on property. They also have live music every Friday & Saturday night and you can try a tasting. Sandy River also hosts special seasonal events like their annual Easter Egg Hunt, Spring Festival, Snacks with Santa & more! 

The annual Easter Egg Hunt & Spring Festival is from 4-7pm on March 30, with the egg hunt at 4:30. There will be a petting zoo, live music, food trucks, a bounce house & the Easter Bunny himself! 

High Bridge State Park , Bear Creek Lake State Park and Twin Lakes State Park are all less than 20 minutes away.

5. Virgin ia Beach, Virginia: We have had the best experiences at Marriott’s Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel  when we've traveled to Virginia Beach. If you are looking to make an overnight stay in Virginia Beach, I definitely recommend it.

We were really impressed with the hotel - it’s the sister hotel of The Cavalier so you have access to that resort too, but at a more reasonable price. It’s family friendly with an indoor zero entry pool and heated outdoor pool. The Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront has dining options on property and room service is available.

Besides playing at the beach, we like to check out Nauticus. This maritime museum has interactive exhibits on the environment, industry and military. Nauticus has rotating exhibits & permanent exhibits, a discovery center, STEM programing, and the Battleship Wisconsin!

We also love to visit Norfolk Botanical Gardens. Located in Norfolk, this botanical garden  has over 60 different gardens, including a children’s garden. WOW Children's Garden  has a world-themed splash park, passport gardens, a nature walk with habitat gardens, and so many opportunities to learn & play. There are over 15 miles of trails (most are stroller friendly). Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden members can visit for free!

Don't miss out on visiting First Landing State Park while you're in Virginia Beach either.   First Landing State Park  is the most visited state park in Virginia! There’s a lot of history here - it’s the location where the first English colonist landed in 1607. Legend also has it that Blackbeard (the pirate) hid in the Narrows area of the park. The park was built in part by an all African American Conservation Corps between 1933-1940.

6. Ro anoke, Virginia: On of our favorite Virginia hotels is in Star City-- Hotel Roanoke . This stunning Tudor-style hotel is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains & is on the National Register of Historic Places (built in 1882). The hotel’s food is delicious plus there is a Starbucks in Steam Coffee & Eatery in the conference center.

It’s right next to Market Street Walkway , and there’s a glass tunnel that goes over the train tracks. It has a map of spots in Downtown Roanoke: Virginia Museum of Transportation, Elmwood Park, Mill Mountain Greenway & Taubman Museum of Art.

It’s about 10 minutes from Mill Mountain  - the big STAR! Mill Mountain has biking & hiking trails, a zoo & a playground. The views are gorgeous from the top!

7. Williamsburg, Virginia:   Great Wolf Lodge  is about an hour from Richmond, and it’s a really easy getaway for families. The resort has a lodge vibe with family suites & themed suites - some have cabins or tents for kids to sleep in! While the main attractions are the indoor & outdoor water parks, the resort also has restaurants, an arcade, a bowling alley & so many family friendly activities on property.

8. Ly nchburg, Virginia: At just about 2 hours away, Lynchburg is an easy drive from Richmond, even for the littlest kids. While we like this spot as a day trip destination, we also love staying at   The Virginian  .

The Virginian is in the heart of downtown Lynchburg, near Amazement Square  (the children’s museum). The hotel has three restaurants - The Marigold Cafe, a casual cafe with breakfast and lunch, The Skyline Grill, a roof top lunch & dinner spot, and William & Henry Steakhouse, a fancy, adults only dinner one. Both the cafe and the grill offer meals to go, so it's easy to enjoy your meals in your room, too.

When you are lynchburg, I highlight recommend visiting Seaquest and Snow Flex.

SeaQuest: SeaQuest  is a 20,000 square feet petting zoo aquarium that opened in 2019. There are about 1,500 animals - turtles, sting rays, sloths & more. You get to touch & feed animals from around the world!

Snowflex  is a mountain top recreation center with ski slopes, mountain tubing & a sledding hill. The mountain is covered in Snowflex - a special surface that’s slippy & grippy, essential for snow sports, plus it’s soft to fall on (no hard ice or packed snow)!

9. Ma ssanutten, Virginia: This four-season resort is a little under 2 hours from Richmond, making it a very easy trip with little kids. We also drove through   Gordonsville  -- we love visiting this cute town to eat at  BBQ Exchange  or to explore   Market at Grelen  and   Montpelier .

Throughout the 6,000 acre property are hiking trails, parks and playgrounds that guests can use free of change. The Fitness and Rec Club has free movies, an arcade, a swimming pool, sand volley ball courts and basketball courts. It also has an ice skating rink in November through the winter months. We also enjoyed the gem mining & the amazing indoor water park! There is a giant water-powered playhouse, lazy river, tube slides, body slides, and an area just for children 36" and smaller. There is also a snack bar and a floor filled with arcade games. They offer day passes to the water park.

Depending on when your next family vacation is planned, you may be able to try snow tubing or summer tubing. Summer tubing  is offered between April and October, and it is set up on two lanes that drop 120 vertical feet over the course of 600 feet.

10. Chincoteague, Virginia: Located on Chincoteague Bay, t he Key West Cottages are a nautical-inspired place for families to stay on the Eastern Shore. These pastel cottages have all the perks of a hotel with all the privacy of a vacation rental. The private retreats have one room or two room layouts. Each cottage has views of either the Chesapeake Bay, the pool or the private beach. With 38 cottages & all different layouts, you can find accommodations that work for your family.

The hotel is very family-friendly! We saw a lot of families with children of all ages. The pool is zero entry, going from 1 foot to 5 feet. There’s also a private beach. While there’s no water access, it has stunning view of the bay, yard games, chairs & grills.

Assateague Island Nation Seashore is 8 minutes from Key West Cottages. It costs $10 per vehicle for a day or you can get a week pass for $25. You’ll find swimming beaches with lifeguards, restrooms & a NPS visitor center! Chincoteague Island also offers one of the most magical experiences in Virginia — you get to see wild ponies!

11. Rich mond, Virginia: If we are doing a staycation in Richmond, my top choice is The Jefferson Hotel. I like it because The Jefferson has an indoor pool, so kids can play and swim all year. You can enjoy Afternoon Tea or Sunday Brunch, all while being close to home.

RVA Tuk Tuk picks up for tours at The Jefferson Hotel too. They offer many family friendly tours including scavenger hunts and bakery tours all year, and Tacky Light Tours in December. This would be such a fun kid-friendly experience to add on to your RVA staycation!

1.  Williamsburg

Colonial Williamsburg is a special area of the city that makes visitors feel like they’ve been transported back to the 18th century. 3.  Richmond

Virginia’s capital of  Richmond  is packed full of adventure that the whole family can enjoy, especially if they’re interested in local history. You’ll find iconic sites from the American Revolution like St. John’s Church. The American Civil War Museum is located here as well. If your kids are more interested in high-speed thrills, however, you can visit Kings Dominion and ride the rides at this popular amusement park. For a more serene experience, however, you’ll find that Richmond is home to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden with its vibrant blooms and expansive variety of plant species on display.

4.  Chincoteague

Chincoteague  is an island located off the coast of Virginia that’s perfect for families looking for a relaxing vacation experience outdoors. Just west of Richmond , in the heart of Cumberland State Forest , Bear Creek Lake is the perfect getaway for families looking to get outdoors and enjoy time on the water. Bear Creek Lake State Park has a small entry fee and is ground central to the area’s activities. Boat rentals are available daily, barring inclement weather, with a beach area open for swimming. The Lakeside Snack Bar provides food and beverage amenities in season. Families can try their luck fishing for their next meal, too!

Plus, there are hiking trails within the park too. Families also have access to the adjoining 16,000-acre Cumberland State Forest. Don’t miss the 14-mile Cumberland Multi-use Trail, which is available for hiking, biking, and horseback riding: an archery range and playgrounds round out the options for families to enjoy the area. Where To Stay Near Bear Creek Lake With Kids 

Bear Creek Lake is one of the best places to find cabin rentals near Richmond, Virginia. Buggs Island Lake/John H. Kerr Reservoir

Cave Mountain Lake

Lake Arrowhead

One of the best lake getaways near Washington, DC, for families is undoubtedly Lake Arrowhead. Spanning 39 acres at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Page County, Virginia , it is just two hours from Washington, DC. Lake Arrowhead is also well situated to all the attractions in and around the town of Luray.

Activities on the lake are focused on swimming and fishing. Here, you can reel in species such as largemouth bass, channel catfish, and northern pike. There’s also a beach , accessible for a small fee in cash, where families can access canoe and kayak rentals. Beach volleyball courts, playgrounds, and picnic shelters are also available.

Where To Stay Near Sherando Lake Or Lake Monocan With Kids

For families who want to stay right near the lake, camping – either traditional or with an RV – is the primary option for Sherando Lake, and there is no on-site lodging at Lake Monocan.

However, there are plenty of home rentals in the surrounding area of both lakes. And for a resort with amenities, families can’t go wrong with the Wintergreen Resort . Lodging options range from traditional hotel rooms to condos and full homes of up to six bedrooms. Plus, resort guests have exclusive access to Lake Monocan on Saturdays, and free entry on other days.

Smith Mountain Lake

Smith Mountain Lake , less than an hour outside of Roanoke , is Virginia’s second-largest freshwater lake, offering 500 miles of shoreline and acres of fun for families looking to enjoy a lake trip. The facilities and range of activities make this one of the best Virginia lakes to vacation with kids !

Smith Mountain Lake State Park boasts a 500-foot beach with a snack bar, fishing, and boating – and plenty of rental options if you don’t have your own supplies. Families can rent and partake in tours involving jet skis, fishing charters, kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats, pontoon boats, and more. In addition, there are 13 hiking trails , ranging from a half mile to three miles, for families looking to stretch their legs and enjoy wooded areas, lake vistas, and secluded coves.

The local chamber of commerce also promotes various fun events for families, like local theater shows, nature events, and annual celebrations like Pirates Weekend. The local visitor guide offers maps and additional selections – from dining to off-water fun like mini-golf, an alpaca farm, and more!

Where To Stay Near Smith Mountain Lake With Kids

Smith Mountain Lake State Park has several lodging options managed by the park, including cabins, bunkhouses, and campsites ; cabins are open between Memorial Day and Labor Day, while camping is more widely available in three seasons of the year. This is a great place to find cabin rentals near Roanoke for families.

For a hotel stay , Westlake Waterfront Inn , Unwind and Reel’ Em Inn , and Halesford Harbour Resort offer lakefront stays. Then, The Virginian at Westlake offers a family-friendly resort a short drive away. Wake up to ocean views, dolphins swimming, navy jets flying and boats everywhere! Nothing to do today except lay your towel down on the sand and bask in the sun.

When hunger strikes, grab a bite to eat from one of our favorite grab-and-go spots like Zeke’s Beans and Bowls or Taste Unlimited , then head back to the beach to enjoy.

Start your day with a little shopping at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront . For a mix of eclectic coastal finds, it’s hard to beat Atlantic Avenue . From classic beach staples like Sunsations , to charming local boutique clothing and gift shops, Atlantic Avenue has a little something for everyone. Check out local shop, True Woman , for great styles and reasonably-priced clothing in reasonable sizes and Bargain Beachwear for a huge selection of all of the beach attire you could want at a great price. Stop by The Artery at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront  for a huge selection including local shops and boutiques. 

After your bags are sufficiently filled, head to Cape Henry military base to climb the steps of the Cape Henry Lighthouse , the first federal construction project under the new government after the Revolutionary War.  Before visiting Cape Henry Lighthouse, be sure to read  additional information on location, arrival, and rules and regulations.

Test your game at with some mini golf. Whether you prefer to play golf among the waterfalls and palm trees of Shipwreck Golf , on a safari at Jungle Golf of Virginia Beach , or even test your luck in one of our blacklight indoor mini golf options, there are several options your family will love in the oceanfront area.

After golf, walk over to Rudee Inlet for a boat ride on the ocean. Opt for the The Rudee Rocket , which is known as the greatest thrill ride on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront and is essentially a giant speed boat tour along the coast that is a must for all thrill seekers.

Wake up early for a sunrise over the water then get your adrenaline pumping with a morning of indoor skydiving at iFly . When you’re back on solid ground, head down the road for a maritime adventure at the Virginia Aquarium.

Dive into more than 800,000 gallons of fun during your self-guided tour of the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center , where you’ll explore the ocean depths and navigate Virginia’s various aquatic and marine environments throughout time. You’ll even get to see the rare Komodo dragon, exotic cobras and the endangered Tomistoma freshwater crocodile among more than 300 species of animals.

Take in the sights and sounds of the oceanfront area with a long bike ride down the boardwalk. The Virginia Beach Boardwalk was built with cyclists and walkers in mind. With separate biking and walking paths, cyclists can ride their beach cruisers along the coast without having to dodge pedestrians or cars. For a classic Virginia Beach adventure, rent a four-wheeled surrey bike and work as a team with your entire family as you pedal full-steam ahead. With rental stations all along the boardwalk, you can come right off the beach and go.

Spend your evening in style with a trip to Virginia Beach’s downtown district, Town Center , for a night of shopping, shows, and great food. Mom and dad can grab a handcrafted cocktail at Twist Martini before catching a show at Sandler Center . Stop by the Royal Chocolate  to close out the night with a tasty treat!

Start your day in the agricultural district of Pungo with breakfast at The Bee & the Biscuit . Operating out of a charming 1919 cottage, this is one of our favorite places to go for a heart southern breakfast. Their house-baked items, local flaky, buttery biscuits and Fresh Pie of the Day are an absolute must. You also can’t go wrong with any of their layered mason jar desserts, like salted caramel brownie or peaches and cream, especially when ordering to-go. Wash it all down with a delicious iced hazelnut vanilla latte.

For another unbeatable brunch option in Pungo, look no further than  Redhead Bay Cafe . Though located in a rural part of town, this place is fast-paced and bustling on the weekends, but you can always expect a warm welcome, large portions of food, and delicious craft cocktails. We love their BYO Breakfast Sandwich for a customized experience that is made to perfection. Wash it down with a Crabby Ghost Bloody Mary if you're feeling spicy.

Spend the afternoon exploring the uninhibited history of the Virginia Military Aviation Museum . It holds the largest private collection of 65 planes from the first 50 years of military aviation, and most of the aircraft have amazingly been restored to their original flying condition.

Grab some ice cream at Pungo Pizza & Ice Cream and take it to Pungo Blueberries to pick a basket of your own.

Close out your trip by heading up into the trees at the Adventure Park at Virginia Aquarium for some high-flying fun. With 15 different treetop obstacle courses at varying degrees of difficulty, this is no walk in the park. Somewhere among the nighttime climbs up in the illuminated trees, zip-lines across Owl’s Creek and the resolve-testing leaps of faith from what seems like a mile up, you’ll forget that you’re at sea level.

Spend the rest of your trip exploring the eclectic ViBe Creative District . While you can find all manners of artwork within the quaint shops and coffeehouses that comprise the area, the ViBe District is a work of art in and of itself. Look no further than the murals, most of which were done by local artists, that fill the ViBe and the Oceanfront with wonder and color. Take the ViBe Mural Walking Tour, an easy, one-mile walking tour, to see all of these colorful murals for yourselves.

10 Best Family Vacations on the East Coast

• I’m an East Coast resident, a seasoned family traveler, and a former early childhood educator who has spent years searching for and trying out the best family vacations on the East Coast with my own kids.
• The East Coast is tailor-made for many different types of family vacations. I’ve curated this list to include a variety of vacation modes, personality types, and seasonal activities.

As a lifelong East Coaster who’s vacationed in spots up and down the coast with my kids, I can say with certainty that this region of the country is absolutely brimming with some of the top family vacation spots in the whole United States. And the best family vacations on the East Coast are an especially great choice for trips built around kid-friendly activities, outdoor attractions, and the natural splendor of mountains and coastline.

Whether you’re coming from near or far, the East Coast has something to offer everyone in the family. For history buffs, baseball fans, and everyone in between, here are my personal recommendations for East Coast vacations your family can enjoy any time of year.

1. The Adirondacks, New York

A region of towering mountains, old-growth forest, and pristine lakes just four hours from New York City or Boston, the Adirondacks is one of best family vacations on the East Coast all year along, and each season offers something unique to do.

The summer months were built for fishing, swimming, biking, hiking, and paddling. In winter, snowshoeing, downhill skiing, and ice skating on frozen lakes (or on Olympic ice in Lake Placid) take center stage. Fall is a family favorite thanks to a spectacular display of crimson, amber, and orange leaves igniting the landscape, and spring brings beautiful blooms to meadows of wildflowers.

Small towns like Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, and Bolton Landing dot the region, and each sit on or near idyllic lakes. There’s a yesteryear quality to these resort areas, with lakefront dining and old-fashioned mom-and-pop shops around every corner. In Tupper Lake,  The Wild Center connects guests to the Adirondacks in a thoughtful way with multimedia exhibits and 31 acres of marked trails, plus a network of treetop bridges called the Wild Walk that’s a hit with kids and parents alike.

If hiking appeals to you, try out one of the “46ers,” the 46 highest peaks in the Adirondack range; locals aspire to all, and shops like Imagination Station in Lake Placid offer wall hangings on which hikers can highlight their peaks.

Where to Stay in the Adirondacks 

For families, Saranac Waterfront Lodge in scenic Lake Saranac is ideal. Situated right on the water, this kid-friendly hotel is centrally located for activities like hiking (easy to moderate trails abound), biking (rentals are available on site), and water sports including fishing, kayaking, and chartered boat rides (boats depart from the hotel’s private dock). Dine inside or al fresco at the lodge’s in-house restaurant, The Boathouse, then take a s’mores pack outside to roast marshmallows at one of the many fire pits for guests.

For those looking for a little more action, the historic Sagamore Hotel on Lake George offers year-round activities on-site including and ice bar and s’mores in winter and ice cream hour and boat tours in summer.

2. Boston, Massachusetts

I love Boston’s historic attractions, interactive museums, and ample green space. Really, it’s catnip for any family seeking an East Coast vacation with an urban feel. Compact and walkable, the city is easy to explore without a car, yet close enough to all corners of the region to serve as a launching point for other New England getaways , including seaside villages and fall foliage vacations .

There are hundreds of interactive exhibits at the Museum of Science and more than 800 different sea species at the New England Aquarium. The Boston Children’s Museum is a great place for hands-on discovery and play, and it has a history of celebrating diversity with exhibits like “Boston Black” and the new “You, Me, We,” both with the goal to encourage dialogue around race and identity.

A visit to the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum is an interactive way to examine this seminal event, and the Freedom Trail is a walkable path through notable destinations in America’s fight for independence. For fresh-air fun, check out the Make Way for Ducklings sculpture or ride a swan boat at the Boston Public Garden (the ducks’ favorite) in warmer weather. Or, go for a spin on the ice at the Frog Pond on Boston Common in winter. 

Where to Stay in Boston 

With sweeping views of Boston Harbor and personalized service, the swanky  Boston Harbor Hotel  is always a hit with families. For rock n’ roll lovers or baseball fans, The Verb Hotel showcases authentic music memorabilia in every room and is just s stone’s throw away from Fenway.

3. Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

Unplug from the 21st century for a while with a visit to Colonial Williamsburg, the largest living history museum in the United States and one of the best family vacations on the East Coast for history buffs. Roam cobblestone streets filled with horse-drawn carriages while surrounded by well-preserved 18th century buildings that capture the spirit of the times.

Kids love meeting the authentically costumed re-enactors as they go about daily chores, demonstrating crafts such as bookbinding, blacksmithing, wig-making, open-hearth cooking and more. Questions are encouraged. For foodie families, historic taverns serve menus inspired by Colonial-era recipes.

Where to Stay in Colonial Williamsburg 

With a giant indoor waterpark and themed-rooms,  Great Wolf Lodge Williamsburg  isn’t just a kid-pleaser, it’s also one of the best Great Wolf Lodge locations in the country.

4. The Poconos, Pennsylvania

Situated in the northeast corner of Pennsylvania, the Poconos Mountain Region feels like a remote East Coast vacation spot, yet it’s only a two-hour drive from both New York City and Philadelphia. Natural beauty and a wealth of outdoor activities have made these mountains a time-tested panacea for the hectic pace of urban life. Charming villages, freshwater lakes, and mighty mountains are all found here. 

In summer, hiking, fishing, swimming, and boating are popular pastimes. In winter, there’s downhill skiing at Camelback, Shawnee, and Jack Frost, as well as opportunities to snowshoe and ice-skate on frozen lakes. Spring brings high waters on the Delaware River for paddling a canoe or kayak.

Late in the year, fall vacation ideas abound when apple picking, pumpkin patches, and vibrant foliage weave a patchwork of color. And if the weather doesn’t cooperate, there are numerous indoor water parks , such as Kalahari and Aquatopia. 

Where to Stay in the Poconos

One of the best all-inclusive family resorts in the U.S., homespun  Woodloch Resort has been owned and operated by the same family since 1958. With scores of activities for family members of all ages, the sparkling lake, swimming pools, ice skating, go-carts, and bedtime-friendly evening entertainment, will be a hit with all of your family members. Woodloch is an ideal multigenerational travel destination, as the variety of scheduled and unscheduled activities—including family games and evening entertainment—will bring everyone together.

5. Cooperstown, New York

While Cooperstown is best known as the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, this all-American village on the shores of pretty Otsego Lake is so much more than just a shrine to America’s favorite pastime. With costumed guides demonstrating venerable traditions, Cooperstown’s Farmers’ Museum offers a window into rural 19th century life. Ramble about the cottages and watch a newspaper being printed or horseshoes being made.

Top it off with a ride on the museum’s Empire State Carousel (open April through October), with its 24 carved animals indigenous to New York State. The Fenimore Art Museum is another worthy stop. Built on the grounds of James Fenimore Cooper’s former estate, the approach here is please-touch and family-focused.

Where to Stay in Cooperstown

Claim a rocking chair on the verandah and soak in the lake view and small-town scenery at The Otesaga Resort Hotel , a family-friendly hotel filled with history and charm.

6. Washington, D.C.

Of all the East Coast vacation spots, our nation’s capital tops the bucket list places to go with kids. You’ll find some of the most famous museums and monuments in the U.S. here, and many of them (like the Smithsonian museums) don’t cost a dime to visit. Additionally, for just $1 (50 cents for kids and seniors), go from monument to museum to metro on the low-cost, ubiquitous DC Circulator—no need for a car in this great city.

From watching the pandas romp at the National Zoo to listening to the rhythmic beat of drums at the Sunday Drum Circle at Meridian Hill Park (also called Malcolm X Park in honor of the famed activist), free options abound. Don’t skip the sparkling Hope Diamond at the National Museum of Natural History, Dorothy’s ruby slippers at the National Museum of American History, and the life-size tipi at the National Museum of the American Indian. The absorbing collection at the National Museum of African American History and Culture is another must-see.

When the hunger pangs set in, iconic Ben’s Chili Bowl offers hot dogs slathered in savory homemade chili sauce. Grab extra napkins and enjoy. Just a few Metro stops off the National Mall, families will delight in the food offerings at Eastern Market; with stalls for many kinds of foods, everyone will be happy.

Where to Stay in Washington, D.C.

Swimming in history, the  Willard InterContinental Washington  is the spot where Abraham Lincoln took up residence for 10 days prior to his inauguration, and Martin Luther King Jr. edited his “I Have a Dream” speech in the lobby. The Children’s Library highlights various individuals and events that shaped the nation’s history and played a role in the hotel’s past. 

For a slightly less expensive option, consider the magnificent Kimpton Hotel Monaco . This former General Post Office is in and of itself a destination, with magnificent modern and period decor and grand spaces fit for the nation’s visitors (and 18th century mail). As Harper’s New Monthly Magazine said of it in December 1859, “We doubt there is a building in the world more chaste and architecturally perfect than the General Post Office.”

7. Shenandoah Valley, Virginia

The scenic Shenandoah Valley has many family attractions. It’s home to Shenandoah National Park, a natural wonderland with miles of hiking trails, wildlife, and stunning views along the 105-mile, two-lane Skyline Drive that’s widely considered one of the best family road trip ideas in the entire country.

For some serious subterranean fun, head down into one of the valley’s numerous caverns filled with otherworldly stalagmites. Shenandoah Caverns is the only Virginia cavern with an elevator, allowing for an easy descent for families with travel strollers in tow. And dino-lovers will enjoy a stop at Dinosaur Land, a roadside attraction in White Post with 50 giant fiberglass dinosaur statues that the kids are encouraged to climb on. 

Where to Stay in the Shenandoah Valley 

Situated on more 6,000 acres in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley,  Massanutten Resort  is a huge property featuring an indoor-outdoor waterpark, golf, skiing, dining, and much more. If you are keen to center your trip around the National Park, the Shenandoah River Cabins are an ideal spot for families; located at the park’s west entrance, these well-appointed cabins have everything a family needs after a day of hitting the great outdoors.

8. Clearwater Beach, Florida

At Clearwater Beach, the sand is as soft as a cloud and the Gulf waters as deep a shade of blue as you’ll find on any of the best family vacations on the East Coast. The old-fashioned pier and palm-lined Beach Walk Promenade beg for a breezy stroll too.

After some quality beach time, shake off the sand and explore the community’s other attractions. Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a working marine hospital that rehabilitates rescued animals from sickness or injury with the goal of releasing them back into their natural habitat as soon as they’re ready. Animals who cannot be released remain for visitors to see and enjoy. The aquarium’s most illustrious former resident is Winter, the dolphin without a tail who starred in the popular  Dolphin Tale  movie.

Active families should head to the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail, a multi-use paved urban trail linking parks, coastal landscapes, and residential areas. The 37-mile trail spans St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs and cuts right through Clearwater. It attracts bikers, skateboarders, joggers, and walkers of all ages. 

Where to Stay in Clearwater Beach 

One of the best Florida beach resorts and situated right on the water, Sandpearl Resort ‘s rooms and suites put their location to good effect with sweeping views of the Gulf, Bay, and coast. Décor is attuned to the natural elements, so expect soothing earth tones. The gorgeous lagoon-style swimming pool is just right for a family plunge. 

9. Burlington, Vermont

With its cute pedestrian-only cobblestone shopping district, university town feel, and lake and mountain activities, Burlington is practically bursting at the seams with New England charm and breathtaking natural beauty. But that’s not the only reason why I’ve picked it as one of the best family vacations on the East Coast. Burlington is also a remarkably versatile destination with four-season charm.

The transit lovers in your family won’t want to miss a trip to the Shelburne Museum just south of town to see the Steamship Ticonderoga. We were able to find a condo in the Keystone ski resort of Colorado that accommodated our large family. There is a brand-new, high-speed lift operating to upper reaches of the more than 3,000 skiable acres. The kids enjoyed the ski fort at the top. We came from far west — Kauai — and Williamsburg to enjoy the experience.
