Barge Cruise Reviews for Alouette

"The crew of the Alouette - Joe, Ang, Chef Joe, and Olivia made our cruise most enjoyable. They created an atmosphere of friendliness while accommodating a first class service. The food was superb. Chef Joe prepared dishes that you could only get in 5 star restaurants. No other barge trip would be the same with any other crew. The cabin were very comfortable and roomy; the excursions very good and the guide knowledgeable and informative; the barge route was very picturesque and interesting (especially the locks). Your service, Beth, in booking the cruise was very good with good communication between both parties, kept informed every step of the way." Charles and Rita J.

Accommodation

The cabins aboard the French barges are spacious and feature luxurious décor that highlights French finesse. The only variation to this can be found aboard Belmond Fleur De Lys, where a slightly more Indian atmosphere can be felt. The colour scheme creates a light and fresh feeling and the furnishings offer superb comfort – whether it’s intricately embroidered Parisian bedcovers or stylish four-poster beds. All cabins have en-suite bathrooms as well as living/dressing areas.

The two Asian ships have been designed to reflect the local area, with artworks and furnishings commissioned by local people to add to the atmosphere on board. Each cabin is elegant and comfortable and offers facilities such as air-conditioning, iPod docking stations, satellite TV and en-suite bathrooms. Belmond Orcaella features Juliet balconies in each cabin, whilst Belmond Road to Mandalay has panoramic windows.

As the French barges have small capacities, it’s almost like having your meals prepared by your own private chef when you sail along the canals and rivers of Provence and Burgundy. The delicious cuisine is made using fresh and local ingredients and fantastic smells drift through the ship around mealtimes. You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the local wines, as some of them will be perfectly paired with each dish.

Dining options are slightly more varied aboard the two Asian ships, with options from India, Thailand and Burma served alongside European favourites. There’s the option to enjoy a morning tea or coffee in your cabin and both breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style. Dinner offers sumptuous choices from a table d'hôte menu and guests aboard Belmond Road to Mandalay can even choose to dine under the stars in the open-air grill.

All of the barges feature a comfortable lounge and dining area, along with a sundeck on which you can soak up the rays and watch the glorious scenery slide past. They also include Wi-Fi and a selection of books and games to help pass the time in between port. All except Belmond Alouette can also offer a swimming pool and Belmond Napoléon even has a Jacuzzi.

Public areas on board the Asian riverboats include a restaurant, lounge, observation deck and boutique from which you can purchase souvenirs and gifts. Each ship also has a wellness area that offers massages and other spa treatments to help you relax even further. Both ships have a swimming pool and fitness area and Belmond Road to Mandalay has the addition of a bar and al fresco dining area.

Onshore activities will vary depending on whether you choose to explore France or Myanmar, however, both destinations offer plenty to see and do. During a trip through the French canals, you will explore local markets, visit vineyards and wineries, discover UNESCO protected landmarks and cycle along the riverside.

In Asia, you will enjoy a mix of excursions that take you to remote locations and well-known places of interest. From learning about the ancient temples of Bagan through the knowledge of your experienced guide to drinking tea with local villagers, this part of the world is sure to leave a lasting impression on you.

Luxury River Cruises in France

Cruise along the beautiful rivers and canals in France onboard a luxury barge and discover the best of French food and wine.

Information We Need

At Wine Paths, we create unforgettable experiences for our discerning clients, and make wine tasting as luxurious and immersive as possible. Take in the wonderful river views, visit sophisticated French towns along the way, and discover the country’s high culture in the most stunning surroundings.

From rolling vineyards and exclusive wineries with vast outdoor space to museums and local attractions, there’s plenty to see and do on a river cruise in France . We have a number of route options, including the waterways of beautiful Burgundy or charming Champagne .

Our luxury river cruises are suitable for foodies and wine enthusiasts alike. In fact, the French consider food and drink as bedfellows, and no experience is complete without both. Onboard your cruise, you will get a chance to sample artisan cheeses or enjoy truffle tasting as well as savour rare vintages and organic wines. Dining aboard is truly indulgent, with dedicated chefs creating fine dining feasts from fresh, local products sourced from the markets en-route.

Guests will also get to dine alfresco and enjoy extensive wine menus in the sunshine when the weather allows. Whether you’re here for the food, here for the wine, or here for the sights, a French river cruise is the perfect way to travel in style.

Exploring the rivers of France

The rivers of this fabulous nation are ideal for cruising. Boasting some of Western Europe’s most famous waterways, and rivers and canals that criss cross the entire expanse of the country, there’s no better place for a holiday on the water.

The country’s five main rivers are the Loire, the Rhine, the Rhone, the Seine, and the Garonne. These waterways are the largest in France, and then there are countless smaller waterways such as canals, forming a wide and beautiful network of incredible places to cruise.

The Loire is the longest river flowing completely in France, beginning in the Ardeche and winding through the lovely cities of Nantes, Tours and Orleans at 625 miles long. The Seine is perhaps the most famous for its route through the capital and providing the setting for top historic sites in Paris , including the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. The Garonne is just as well-recognized by food and wine enthusiasts, as it runs through the foodie region of Bordeaux . Then connecting the Garonne to the Étang de Thau on the Mediterranean is the Canal du Midi, one of our favourite cruising destinations.

Another popular cruising waterway for unbelievable food and wine is the River Marne and Canal Lateral de Marne, taking guests through the stunning Champagne region, with the most indulgent dining and tasting opportunities.

Where to go

When it comes to cruising in France, there are so many incredible destinations to explore. Many people immediately think of Paris when they consider a cruising holiday, and it’s easy to see why with all the well-known historic landmarks.

Saone-Rhone river cruises take in some of the most prolific winemaking regions such as Beaujolais, Burgundy and Cotes du Rhone, with stops at wonderful wine meccas, fine gastronomy and stunning scenery. For something a little more off the beaten track, we highly recommend the Belmond Lilas Afloat in France cruising experience blends tranquil relaxation with cultural and culinary discovery. For 3 to 6 nights you can glide through serene waterways in sumptuous king-size or double cabins, with stops in Montmerle, Abbaye de Cluny, Beaune, Chateau de Rully, St Jean de Losne, and Dijon.

Or hop on the Belmond Pivoine and immerse yourself in the land of French sparkling wines, savoring every moment in Champagne. Route options include Couvrot to Epernay, Epernay to Couvrot, Chalons to Chateau Thierry, or Chateau Thierry to Chalons.

Things to see and do

A river cruise in France can be as relaxed or action-packed as you desire. Activities on our cruises include everything from hot air ballooning and watersports to authentic market tours and truffle hunting. And let’s not forget about the amazing winery visits , vineyard tours and wine tasting.

In the Champagne region, ultra-premium sparkling varietals will be more accessible than water, and Burgundy is the ultimate destination for sampling pure Pinot Noir.

Aboard your cruise, you’ll have plenty of time to wind down in your own private space. When you’re finished basking in the sun on deck, you can retreat to your luxurious room. Some of the Belmond cruisers feature rooms with high-end embroidered Parisian bed covers and marble en-suites. So you’ll have all the opulence you need for a special trip or romantic getaway.

Tips for river cruising

At Wine Paths, we arrange cruises for discerning clients who enjoy fine dining, great wine and great weather. But it doesn’t matter whether you’re a wine expert or cheese aficionado or a total beginner – we can help you have an unforgettable holiday. Here are some tips for making the most of your trip:

  • Research the destinations beforehand

A little research about the wines and grape varieties or local cuisine will help you appreciate every tasting or dining experience.

  • Bring comfortable footwear

There will be a number of stops with plenty of time to explore on foot, so bring suitable shoes for walking around.

  • Ask for recommendations

When it comes to ordering food or trying new wine varietals, don’t be afraid to ask the waiter for recommendations.

The Newest Belmond Boat Will Have a Champagne Bar and Cruise to Vineyards in the French Countryside

The newest in the fleet of Les Bateaux Belmond is Coquelicot, A Belmond Boat, Champagne, which will sail in May 2023 — in partnership with Maison Ruinart.

belmond french river cruises

Courtesy of Belmond

Belmond, the luxury travel company behind the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train , is adding yet another one-of-a-kind luxury offering to its portfolio. In May 2023, the company will launch a luxury barge that will take travelers on week-long private river cruises in France’s Champagne region .

Dubbed Coquelicot, A Belmond Boat, Champagne , the vessel will accommodate six guests with three ensuite double cabins. Designed by French duo Emil Humbert and Christophe Poyet (who are also working on the upcoming Mandarin Oriental, Vienna), there's a spacious indoor lounge and a Champagne bar that, before each trip, will be stocked with a curated selection of the travelers’ preferred bottles of bubbly. The new Belmond boat will join the fleet of six Les Bateaux Belmond cruising French rivers (all only available for private charter).

But the crown jewel of the boat is the main deck which features two elegant, alfresco lounges, an open kitchen, a shaded dining area, and potted plants such as local herbs and wildflowers.

Belmond will also partner with France's oldest Champagne house, Maison Ruinart , to offer guests a private tour of its vineyard in Taissy alongside a tasting of its legendary cuvées. Back on the boat, Maison Ruinart’s chef Valérie Radou will treat guests to a five-course meal.

The week-long itineraries along the beautiful River Marne can be completely customized to reflect guests’ interests and preferences — from art- and history-focused tours to visiting under-the-radar wineries in the area.

Rates to charter Coquelicot, A Belmond Boat, Champagne start from €82,000 (approximately $79,500) and can accommodate up to six people. The rate includes all meals on board, beverages, all planned excursions with a private guide, and a transfer from Paris to the boat in Champagne.
