The post Sparta Announce 2023 US Tour Celebrating 20th Anniversary of Wiretap Scars [Updated] appeared first on Consequence .
Sparta have announced a 2023 US tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Wiretap Scars . The outing will feature support from ’68, Thursday singer Geoff Rickly , and zeta.
It’s technically the belated 20th anniversary of Wiretap Scars , which was released in August 2002. The album features the single “Cut Your Ribbon” and the epic fan favorite “Air.”
After initially announcing the first leg which runs from May 4th in Mesa, Arizona, through a May 19th show in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Sparta unveiled two more legs, including a June run and a July/August jaunt. All told, the tour now spans 40 dates, concluding August 12th in Dallas.
Tickets for the first leg are already available, while the second two legs go on sale this Friday (April 14th) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster . Fans can also look for deals or purchase tickets to sold-out shows via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.
Sparta was formed in 2001 by members of At the Drive-In after the latter band’s initial breakup. After a couple of hiatuses and multiple personnel changes, frontman Jim Ward and bassist Matt Miller remain Sparta’s only permanent members, as they play shows with a touring drummer. The post-hardcore act’s most recent album is a 2022 self-titled effort .
Editor’s Note: This story was updated on April 12th with news of the tour’s second two legs.

Sparta Extends 'Wiretap Scars' 20th Anniversary Tour With Dates in NYC, Boston, Nashville, Chicago & More
Tickets for the first leg are on-sale now with the additional tour dates going on sale this Friday at 10am ET.
As previously announced, Sparta, the El Paso band featuring Jim Ward, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their critically acclaimed debut album Wiretap Scars with a tour of the U.S.
Today, they announce even more dates with Geoff Rickly (Thursday) and zeta as support. See below for a full rundown of new dates (in bold) as well as the previously announced tour dates with Rickly and '68. Tickets for the first leg are on-sale now here with the additional tour dates going on sale this Friday at 10am ET.
This marks Sparta's first tour of 2023 and a follow up to their fall 2022 tour supporting The Get Up Kids.
Featuring fan-favorites "Air," and "Cut Your Ribbon," Wiretap Scars was released in August 2002. At the time Sparta was Ward, Matt Miller, Paul Hinojos, and Tony Hajjar. The 4 formed Sparta following the break of their former band, the post-hardcore At the Drive-In.
Sparta currently consists of Jim Ward and Matt Miller who are joined by drummer Neil Hennessy on tour. Last year, the band released self-titled album Sparta which followed 2020's Trust The River , both released on Dine Alone Records. Trust the River marked the first full length studio album from the band since 2006's Threes. Ward has also recently released his first solo album Daggers (Dine Alone Records).
When it comes to his long and fruitful career in music, Jim Ward is not guided by vanity or money or some grand narrative in which he's the central player. It's all about the song, the melody, the lyric. So in late-2017, when he began making heavier, more riff-laden music, he rang his Sparta bandmate of more than 20 years, bassist Matt Miller, and began work on Trust The River. Beyond Sparta, Ward has performed in various bands and under several monikers over his long and winding career- from the iconic post-hardcore band At The Drive-In, his alt-country project Sleepercar, to a slew of solo albums.

Live music review: Sparta Celebrates Wiretap Scars 20th Anniversary Tour at Parish
Sparta cruised into Austin’s Parish venue on July 26, celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Wiretap Scars . This highly anticipated release came after their 2002 EP, Austere . Wiretap Scars was well received, particularly following the downfall of the critically acclaimed band, At The Drive-In. The breakup of At The Drive-In, due to musical differences, split the band into Sparta and The Mars Volta. Both bands definitely took different paths and crafted their own sound.
Sparta was formed with the joining of Paul Hinojos (guitar) and Tony Hajjar (drums), both former members of At the Drive-In. Later, Paul Hinojos went on to join The Mars Volta, led by Cedric Bixler-Zavala (vocals) and Omar Rodriguez (guitar), who were also former members of At the Drive-In. Tony Hajjar explored his own musical projects after contributing to a couple of Sparta releases.
El Paso’s all-girl band, Acid Wave , kicked off the festivities with their late shoegaze/dream pop sound. Throughout their set, the band’s members took turns on vocals, pleasantly surprising the audience and expanding their fan base while demonstrating their versatility. Touring alongside Sparta is undoubtedly going to put Acid Wave on the map with music fans in the coming years. Make sure to grab a copy of their album on Hogar Records .
Continuing the celebration was none other than Venezuela’s band, Zeta ! The hard-rocking group took the stage by storm, catching most of the audience off guard. Their complex instrumentation filled the venue with compelling riffs and prog-rock metal vibes, all underlined by Latin beats. Zeta’s high-energy performance proved they are a force to be reckoned with. Keep an eye out for Zeta when they come to your area; you won’t be disappointed! For more on Zeta, check out a show review at The Far Out Lounge on The Cosmic Clash .
When it was time for Sparta to take the stage, loud cheers erupted as band leader, Jim Ward and bass player Matt Miller, accompanied by drummer Neil Hennessy, appeared on stage. The band’s setlist included a complete playthrough of Wiretap Scars . The show kicked off with the powerful track “Cut Your Ribbon, ” immediately igniting strong emotions as the crowd sang along to every word. As they transitioned into the second track, “Air,” a nostalgic vibe filled the room as the crowd screamed out the chorus, “We’re drinking on jet streams, through to, ideas won’t happen!”, evoking memories of the early 2000s shows in El Paso and beyond.
The album’s perfectly placed track order softened the pace with “Collapse,” “Sans Cosm,” and the beautifully crafted “Light Burns Clear.” The lyrics echoed, “L ooking back with perfect symmetry, Mistakes were you, mistakes were me, Photos fall through the glass, Paint it black to hide your face”. “ Cataract”‘ has always carried a hint of At The Drive-In influence, particularly in the song’s opening. “Red Alibi” and, “℞ Coup” lived up to expectations, with both new and old fans cheering enthusiastically for every note. When they launched into “Glasshouse,” Miller took control, delivering each note with conviction, and leading the charge on stage.
Before continuing, Ward broke his vow to play the album in its entirety but still thanked the crowd for their unwavering support, stating, “Thank you for giving a shit after all these years.” With gratitude in his voice, the band proceeded to carry on with the rest of their performance.
The last two tracks on Wiretap Scars , “Echodyne Harmonic” and “Assemble the Empire,” didn’t mark the end of the show. Sparta had some surprises up their sleeve to keep the energy going. They launched into “Breaking the Broken” from their second release, Porcelain , which kept the audience on their toes, singing along to the lyrics, “I wouldn’t trade what I got, not for anything.”
Before continuing their set with the classic, “As Oceana Sleeps.” Jim Ward once again broke with protocol to express his gratitude to his long-standing member and friend, Matt Miller, for his unwavering support over the years. He also took the time to thank the opening bands before introducing drummer Neil Hennessy. In a lighthearted moment, Hennessy jokingly attempted to mimic the brilliant style of Zeta’s drummer, eliciting a chuckle from the crowd. The camaraderie and appreciation between the band members added a special touch to the memorable night.
With a carefully curated setlist, they went on to perform “Empty Houses” and the incredible “Miracle” from their Covid pandemic release, Trust the River , in April 2020. Naturally, the band ended the show with the emotionally driven song, “Atlas.” Ward stepped away from the mic, letting his signature scream fill the air, and encouraging the crowd to repeat after him, “More than lights, expose who you are.” Sparta lived up to their promise and gave the audience what it wanted, a hard-hitting unforgettable performance.
The show satisfied the hunger to hear the classic Wiretap Scars after 20 years played in its entirety. Good luck with getting your hands on an original pressing of Wiretap Scars valued at about 200 dollars.
Sparta has three remaining U.S tour dates (including Dallas August 12) before heading to Europe for the remainder of August into September.

Sparta’s Jim Ward celebrates 20th anniversary of cult classic debut album in Philly, the ‘coolest brother’ of the East Coast

A little more than 20 years ago, the El Paso-based band Sparta released their debut album, “ Wiretap Scars ” — for fans of the genre, a must-listen post-hardcore album that resulted from the demise of one of the best punk bands of all time. To celebrate the occasion, the group is playing the album in full nationwide, including Tuesday night at Underground Arts.
Sparta frontman Jim Ward first played Philly in 1997, with At The Drive-In , the band he started at age 17, and has always been fascinated by what one of the Mid-Atlantic’s largest cities has to offer.
“Coming from a pretty small city, those places are so fascinating to me,” Ward said. “You have multiple clubs, you have multiple genres of bands existing at the same time… You guys know, Philly’s got its own thing. It’s like the coolest brother of the East Coast, you know what I mean?”
Sparta rose from the ashes after ATDI broke up in 2001. While one half of the band went on to start The Mars Volta, Sparta signed with DreamWorks Records and got straight to work on a debut album. Ward had no idea that decades later, the record would still be resonating with fans.
“I don’t think I ever really think that much about the future,” Ward said. “Like even now, I don’t think about 20 years from now… it’s just kind of where life took me.”
Sparta’s success continued on their next two albums, Porcelain and Threes , which brought appearances on various late night shows. They even opened for Pearl Jam in 2003, including a stop at the Spectrum in Philadelphia ( RIP ).
Philly’s music scene has had a very direct impact on Ward, as Ben Kenney (formerly of The Roots, now with Incubus) played on Ward’s solo album, Daggers .
“When Sparta toured with Incubus, we got to be pretty good friends and we always sort of joked about playing [together], like, ‘Oh, we should do something,’” Ward said. During the pandemic, the collaboration finally came to fruition.
“He’s like my Philly connection, and I love him so much.” Ward said of Kenney. “I feel like he’s a good representation of Philly, right? Like he’s the cool uncle. He’s always like the coolest one in the band and you know, he’s the coolest friend to have.”
The Philly music scene also indirectly affected Ward, via a recommended purchase. “A year and a half ago, somebody turned me on to the Soul Glo record, so I ordered it,” he said.
Soul Glo is one of the hottest bands to come out of Philly in a minute. The album Ward purchased, Diaspora Problems, was one of 2022’s hardest hitting punk records, receiving rave reviews and ending on many critics top albums lists including Pitchfork, NPR, and The Needle Drop.
“It came in the mail. I put it on. I fucking love it,” Ward said.
In 2011, Sparta dusted off the cobwebs and got back to work, Ward released his first solo recordings , before At The Drive-In decided to reunite for a tour in 2012 . Sparta went dormant again shortly after, and ATDI were headed back on the road in 2016, until tensions rose to the surface.
“A couple of weeks before that tour started, I got kicked out,” Ward said. “Obviously that’s going to change the dynamics of everything because, you know, whether it was fair or not fair is not for me to decide.”
After more than two decades in the music business, he recognized the situation for what it was. “I kind of live by the sword, die by the sword,” Ward said. “I understand that that’s what happens in bands and you don’t always fit what everybody wants to do and I totally get it. It kind of changed what I wanted to do musically.”
Not long after, Ward called up his long-time friend Matt Miller, the band’s bassist, and Sparta was back in business.
“We hadn’t really played for years, but still were good friends,” Ward said. “And I said, ‘Hey, I just want to go play loud songs. You want to go book five shows?’… And then we ended up making Trust The River after that and I sort of just fell back in love with the band and fell in love with playing heavier music and finding my own way.”
While Ward is usually looking forward, taking a step back and looking at the journey the band’s been on has been exciting. At first, he wasn’t too keen on going on the road to play that first album. Then he heard from the fans.
“I fell in love on that record,” Ward recalled people telling him. “’I met my wife. We now have kids. My kids are 15. They love Sparta…”
It could’ve been that they saw the band at North Star Bar, he noted. It could’ve been they saw him open for Pearl Jam. But “everybody has these memories that are triggered by this record that are coming specifically to hear that record,” Ward said.
“All the cities are cool in their own way, but Philly’s always kind of had… It’s kind of like the coolest understated place, and I love that.”
Sparta plays Underground Arts at 1200 Callowhill St. on Tuesday night. Doors open at 6:30, and tickets are $23 before fees .

The Mars Volta Announce Fall 2023 North America Tour Dates
The Mars Volta have just announced a North American tour for fall 2023 that will pick up after the band concludes their summer concert dates across the world this June.
That's great news for us fans of the post-prog-rockers who last week released the album Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazón , a complete acoustic re-working of their 2022 reunion album, the poppy but downtempo The Mars Volta , which was their first LP in a decade.
See the dates near the bottom of this post.

Tickets for The Mars Volta's fall dates go on sale this Friday (April 28). Find more info here.
The Mars Volta History
Lead singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist-producer Omar Rodriguez-Lopez formed The Mars Volta after the 2001 breakup of their band At the Drive-In . At the Drive-In's Jim Ward went on to form Sparta .
The Mars Volta thereafter released six studio albums, starting with 2003's De-Loused in the Comatorium , which features Red Hot Chili Peppers ' Flea on bass. At the Drive-In briefly reunited in 2011 and 2016. Bixler-Zavala and Rodriguez-Lopez moonlighted as the garage rockers Antemasque in 2014.
