Columbia also produces a large selection of standard cotton shirts that you can wear for just about any occasion. They’re very budget-friendly and the cotton is lightweight, breathable, and cozy for long days on the road. They also make one of the best rain jackets out there, and it doesn’t break the bank.

On a broader scale, all of Columbia’s fabrics are comfortable and adequately durable. Take note, however, that I’ve found the lower price equals slightly less durability for some of their products. While I love how Columbia clothes fit and function, I’ve also found them to wear out earlier than other brands.

Arc'teryx : Best Adventure Travel Clothes

If you’re interested in the most up-to-date technological innovations in outdoor gear and travel clothing, consider Arc’teryx . More than other travel clothing brands, they focus on the performance of their clothes, along with a ruggedly practical design.

Their bread and butter is technical adventure gear for sports, like climbing and mountaineering. Therefore, you’re guaranteed durable and performance-driven garb designed to be put through the wringer.

Patagonia’s quality is unparalleled. They use the highest quality fabric and manufacturing processes available for their gear (which is why they make some of the best midlayers out there). Furthermore, they’re very transparent about where they source those materials, and it’s all ethical.

What I mean by “minimalist” is that these travel pants don’t feature any overt logos, bulkiness, or patterns. Just a simple, well-made design that extends to all KÜHL products. That makes them perfect travel pants.

For all you women out there, KÜHL even has an exciting activewear dress collection. The fabric ranges from mighty merino wool to standard cotton, but each one is incredibly cozy and perfect to wear on the road.

These merino wool socks genuinely live up to the company name, and they’ll last trip after trip and season after season with hardly any signs of wear and tear. They are durable, warm, and breathable, and they feature merino wool’s natural odor resistance. Merino is the best material for base layers, and that includes your socks!

The natural temperature-regulating properties of wool also makes these socks ideal for both cold and hot weather. Their designed to keep your feet comfortable no matter the temperature. They also sell a wide range of sock thicknesses, from super lightweight running socks to thick, cushy winter ones.

Eddie Bauer is an extremely well-known travel clothing brand with plenty of options for both men and women. For my part, I love their travel pants think they’re one of the best jacket brands out there. Their Guide Pro pants are water-resistant, stretchy, and very swish. Meanwhile, the jackets are lightweight, breathable, stylish, and perfect for men or women.

I also have an Eddie Bauer down parka that I love. I can wear it during the day and stay comfortable without overheating. Meanwhile, my favorite pair of Guide Pro pants look at home on the trail, in a restaurant, or just lounging around.

My emphasis on their pants and jackets is not to imply that I’m not a fan of Eddie Bauer shirts, however. They offer a wide variety in both technical and cotton that are appropriate for casual or activewear. Take note that I feel that their shirts are a little on the boxy side, and they wouldn’t be my first choice to dress to impress, but they’re functional nevertheless. In particular, I think Eddie Bauer makes great shirts for sun protection while hiking in warmer weather.

If you close your eyes and try to imagine what a traveler or backpacker looks like, what do you see? Anyway, for a long time I also had a pretty narrow definition of traveler dress sense and kind of put backpackers into either the badly dressed or the barely dressed category. But, it really doesn’t need to be this way! Backpacker chic and travel clothes can actually be stylish and practical.

Choosing the right clothes to take travelling can actually be pretty tough. You need to make sure you have the right clobber to wear for all occasions but at the same time you want to try and pack as lightly as possible. And of course, more often than that the “normal person” clothes you wear in your day to day life back home simply won’t cut it. To be fair, you would be forgiven for thinking that you need to bear a whole new wardrobe or (at least suitcase) of threads before you hit the road.

Ok, so, what are the best travel clothes? Well before we give you our list we want to give you some rational first!

There are a few golden rules to finding travel clothes to take on any trip.

The first thing is to try and find items of travel clothing that are versatile and can be worn in a variety of situations. For me, the best traveling clothes are those that perform multiple tasks in one!

Examples of this include the humble vest – it can be worn to the beach in all its glory, it can be worn under a shirt on a night on the tiles, and it can be used as a base layer when things get a bit nippy. Other examples are dark coloured, zip-to-shorts trekking pants – you can wear them to trek, they can *almost* pass for smart, and you can zip them down to shorts and show off your calves. You get the concept right?

The next tip is to pay attention to materials and fabrics . You may be forced to wear your items more than you usually would and washing them may be a struggle. Therefore, look for fabrics that are quick drying so you can cheekily wash them in a hurry, and also look for anti-odour technology in case you end up having to wear the same socks for days on end. Anti-crease fabrics that don’t need to be ironed are also pretty useful too.

Look for light, compact items as much as possible. Jeans will only roll up so much but linen pants will squeeze into even a backpacks side pocket. If you need to pack a winter jacket , then consider investing in a specialist item such as Rab Goose Down. Whilst the Nomatic is the ideal luggage option, it is way too big to use as a daypack. The Osprey Daylite on the other hand, is perhaps the perfect daypack. At 18 liters, it’s the perfect size for trips to the beach, city tours or day hikes mixing decent storage capacity with lightness.

There are plenty of internal pockets and pouches designed to hold keys, phones or even cigarettes as well as a quick access side pocket for water bottles. At $65, it’s a bit of a bargain and comes with the Osprey All Mighty Guarantee.

Aesthetically, the daylite is also pretty easy on the eye and can be worn in both outdoor and urban settings. 

For the team members wanting a versatile and comfortable bag for everyday use, the Daylite offered the perfect solution. Of course, this is not really that useful as a daypack if you’re going hiking or if you have a lot of stuff to carry. However, the trick to successful travel packing is to pack plenty of practical items and a few luxury items for “best” use.

Many of our team love to keep their most valuable items close by, especially when transiting. Having an additional purse means things like passports, wallets and even hard drives and compact cameras can be kept on the body whilst on a night bus or plane ride. They also love that this doubles as a going out back ticking that all-important box of versatility!

When packing travel clothes, our tip is to bring vests, vests and more vests. Vests are such a wonderfully versatile item – you can wear them in all their glory (and show those guns off), “dress them up” by putting an open shirt over them or you simply use them as a base layer in case of cold nights. Oh, and they are ideal for sleeping in!

You can get vests pretty much anyway. Most high-street fashion chains offer vests for around $10 per pop or even x 2 for $12. Or, you can buy nice, pretty ones with art prints or psychedelic designs on them.

I usually make sure I bring at least one specialist outdoor vest made from breathable, quick-drying, odour-resistant fabric too.

What can I say, our team are a sexy bunch and they love to get those guns out! Who can blame them?

You already have t-shirts right? I don’t need to tell you why these are necessary or where to buy them. All I will say is avoid heavy fabrics and avoid t-shirts that are tight otherwise you will sweat your armpits off the very minute you step out of the plane.

One tip is to bring at least one sports-style t-shirt whether it’s a football (soccer) shirt or a trekking t-shirt. These are useful as they tend to be breathable and quick drying. This one from Patagonia is a great example of one of the best travel tops on the market.

Our team really loves these shirts because firstly, they weigh so much less than traditional cotton t-shirts meaning the save on weight. But they also find that they are much more versatile for backpacking trips as they work well for both time spent exploring a new city and hiking in sweaty conditions. The shirts are also good to use a baselayer with a thicker t-shirt for when extra warmth is required and it’s something our team does often.

I usually travel with 1 or 2 shirts, they are definitely good travel clothes for any type of trip. They are a great versatile item as they can be dressed up or dressed down – you can wear them to go for cocktails or to hit the beach. Ideally, try to choose shirts made from light materials and try to choose shirts that look good both buttoned up, and unbuttoned over a vest – this offers you some variety.

I usually make a point of wearing a shirt whenever I go to the airport or have any kind of encounter with authority; looking presentable just seems to make them look a bit more favourably on you.

Another tip is to pick up at least one technical, breathable, quick-drying shirt as these come in useful for jungle treks.

As we’ve mentioned above, our team are all about versatility and they just love the many varied uses shirts have. They often tend to prefer long sleeve tops for hiking through jungles and other bug-infested environments and when combined with a technical t-shirt above it gives them a mega adaptable clothing set up.

Tactical Pants

Choosing the right legwear to pack for travels can be quite tough. In my normal life, I usually live in jeans and yet they are often just not suitable to take on my travels. Firstly, denim jeans tend to feel a bit sweaty once the temperature passes 20 degrees (Celsius) and then of course, if you wear jeans to go on a hike they can seriously chafe.

This is where tactical, trekking pants come in. They are made from breathable fabrics, tend to be a bit looser in the fit and are therefore perfect for wearing in weather climes. The downside is that they can look a bit nerdy and you may end up feeling out of place in cosmopolitan cities. The trick is to shop around until you find a pair that mixes practicality with a style you are happy with.

Bonus points if you can find a pair that zip off into shorts – it’s like a 2 for 1! There are loads of different brands out there making travel and trekking pants but to get you started, check these out from REI.

Zip-offs might not be the sexiest piece of gear, but our team swear by them. Again, versatility is the name of the game and when hiking in jungles full of god knows what, ya’ll want to protect your legs! Then again, at the end of said hike when you end up on the beach and want to soak your beaten feet, zip those bad boys off and enjoy. Boom! Whose sexy now!?

Shorts – Multiple Pairs

For some strange reason I used to be embarrassed to wear shorts which is weird as my hairy legs are a thing of beauty. Anyway, I am over that hang up now and tend to wear shorts most days when I go traveling.

I recommend bringing several pairs of shorts with you. If you have space in your luggage, then go for a pair of “beach”/Bermuda shorts, some more stylish denim/chino shorts as well as a pair of tactical/military cargo shorts with loads of pockets – these are great for trekking, cycling and general adventuring.

If you need some advice on choosing the perfect cargo-style shorts, then start with these from REI. They are water resistant, quick drying and have plenty of pockets making them ideal for backpacking and traveling.

Our team love a good pair of shorts it has to be said. Most of us spend a lot of time in hot weather climates so they’re our day-to-day wear. Our team in particular love these cargo shorts because not only are they below the knee (great for temples etc) but they offer increased functionality when it comes to carrying accessories without the need for a bag.

Harem Pants

Perhaps the quintessential backpacker item, you can’t NOT own a pair of harem pants if you are serious about backpacking! These are great to wear on those hot, tropical nights, for lounging around your hostel and yes, for Yoga class. 

Yes, they are cool travel clothes. However, my advice is NOT to wear them to the airport, when getting visa extensions or for any other encounter with authority – on these occasions, always make some effort to dress a bit smarter.

Rab Lightweight Down Jacket

No matter where in the world you are going, you will need some kind of jacket. Even if you are headed out to the tropics, it can still get cool at night and seriously frigid if you climb any mountains. At the very least, it will be useful to have a jacket with you when you arrive back home in Seattle/London/Paris on a cold morning.

The kind of jacket you need will depend on where you are going and when. This Down Jacket by Rab is excellent for fending off cold temperatures. Goose down is like magic and will keep you body warm and cosy even in near freezing temperatures. As such, this jacket is ideal for traveling in spring, autumn or if you are headed to the mountains.

It also packs down to a fraction of its size meaning it will sit quietly in your luggage and hardly take up any room at all.

It does have a hood and offers some water resistance in case of rain. However, if you need a proper, full on rain jacket, check out our next suggestion.

Our team always carry a lightweight and compact down jacket on any backpacking trip, even to Southeast Asia! They swear by this Rab jacket as it seems to hit the sweet spot between offering a good level of warmth, especially when layered, whilst being super packable.

Arc’teryx Beta Lt Jacket

When it rains in the tropics, it really rains. Whether you are traveling around India in monsoon, or simply get unlucky in Ecuador, it usually pays to have a proper, waterproof jacket with you when you hit the road.

We have tried a fuck ton of water proof jackets over the years and this is by far the best one we have tried. The Arc’teryx Beta weighs just 300 g / 10.6 oz, making it one of the lightest pieces of performance clothing in your backpack – it packs down to the size of a large grapefruit and definitely weighs less than one. It’s fully waterproof and will withstand a hell of a beating from the rain gods whilst you stay dry. 

Arc’teryx gear is also some of the most stylish gear in the outdoor space. It is also, amongst the most expensive gear in the outdoor space too.

Again, the team never leaves the house without a good waterproof jacket and no matter where their trips take them. They’ve tried a bunch of different jackets out over the years but feel the quality of the Arc’teryx Beta combined with its unbeatable weight makes it a winner for backpacking.

Converse All Stars

Choosing the right footwear to pack for your travels is not always straightforward. Shoes are kind of a bulky item in your luggage so you want to bring as few pairs as possible but you also need footwear for a whole number of situations. Whilst many backpackers tend to spend a lot of time wearing flip-flops (thongs) these are most definitely not appropriate for all occasions.

Converse All Stars, are a bit of a multi-tool kind of footwear. You can wear them for a night on the town and you can do moderate difficulty treks with them. Because they are made from light canvas material, they are breathable enough to wear even in tropical climes so your feet won’t get too sweaty.

Whether you go for the hi-tops or the regular pump style is a matter of preference – both are good.

Our team love Converse in particular because the canvas upper of the shoe is easily folded over so it takes up hardly any room in their bags. They also like that converse can be worn for everyday travelling but can also look decent enough for a night out too.

Salomon X Ultra 3 Low Aero Shoes

If you intend on doing some proper trekking or heading to the mountains, then you need to think about bringing some proper technical footwear. Walking boots are (literally) made for walking but they are not always ideal for backpacking as they are big and chunky and can eat up precious room in your luggage. 

Fortunately, these Saloman X walking and hiking shoes offer much of the support and protection of walking boots but are a bit smaller and lighter meaning they will snuggle nicely in your backpack.

For the team they always try to travel with a good pair of walking shoes (not boots) on their trips. This means that they are always prepared should they want to go on a hike. They love the Saloman X in particular as they are light and comfortable to wear walking around a city day to day too and don’t make their backpacks too heavy.

Sandals or OluKai ‘Ohana Flip-Flops

Sandals and flip flops are the preferred travel footwear of many backpackers. They are cheap, airy and easy to kick off when you hit the beach making them the obvious choice for many. They also slot into backpacks very easily taking up hardly any space whatsoever.

However, thongs are not suitable for all occasions. Remember that they offer no protection for your feet and many travelers have stubbed or broken their toes on uneven pavements whilst wearing them. Also, if you wear thongs to ride a motorbike or scooter, please be extra careful where you put your feet.

If you’re wanting a good mix between lightweight and durable, we would suggest you check out Vivobarefoot’s line of boots and shoes . They do a great job of freeing up your feet and being relatively breathable, so if you’re not too keen on sandals, they might be a good option for you.

My advice is to bring a good pair of shoes or sneakers and wear flip-flops only for the beach. You can find flip flops pretty much everywhere but if you want a good pair that won’t fall to pieces after a week, then check out this pair by Olu’kai.

Standard flip flops might be the backpacker sandal of choice, but our team prefer the extra support these offer with their cross-over strapping and adjustable back. It means that if they’re out and about and the terrain does turn a little more challenging, then they can simply summon their inner mountain goat and crack on!

Laundry Wash Bag

At some point your travel clothes will get smelly and dirty. When this happens, try to avoid storing them with your clean clothes as the odours will spread. The solution is simple enough, pack a travel laundry bag – you throw your dirty stuff in it and when it’s full, you take it to the laundry.

You may even want to consider buying a travel wash bag – a water tight, rubber laundry bag which you use to actually wash your clothes inside simply by adding detergent and shaking it about. Obviously the standard of washing you get isn’t the same as what you get from a machine, but it is quick, cheap and very ecological.

Over the years we have sampled many laundry bags and wash bags and this one by Scrubba has become our favourite.

It might seem like a simple enough thing, but you’d be surprised how many laundry bags our team have been through before settling on this one! Others on the market rip easily, get stinky themselves or leak their stank right through their porous material! This bag on the other hand not only solves those issues but offers a great place to actually wash your undies too!

Odour Resistant Underwear

Never leave home without good travel underwear . Socks and underpants are the foundations upon which all empires are built and I suggest bringing at least one full week’s supply of underwear with you.

When you’re traveling, underwear tends to get seriously sweaty and you may even sometimes be forced to live in it for days on end. To countenance the sheer griminess, bag yourself some breathable, odour-resistant underwear.

Now we’re talking! The team are big fans of these keks and they wouldn’t go anywhere without them! So, next time you look at a picture of one of us… well, use your imagination! Once they switched from plain old cotton to these technical undies, they’ve never looked back!

Sunglasses by Abaco

So yes Sunglasses can be picked up for a couple of dollars on pretty much every roadside in Southeast Asia. However, these are almost always low-quality items that offer no protection from the sun, can actually cause eyesight problems and more often than not will break within a week or so.

How We Tested The Best Travel Clothes

There is no perfect or exact science when it comes to testing out travel and outdoor gear. When it comes to the best travel clothes, however, we’ve got heaps of experience over the years with various different bits of gear on various trips.

Of course, the best clothing for travel is a subjective matter, but we’ve tried a lot of shiz out, so we think we’re well equipt to give you a few pointers! What clothes should I wear in Italy in winter?

Pack a pair of warm gloves , a thick scarf , and a hat . If you are planning to go to the north, I suggest a padded winter coat and layer of merino wool thermals , too.

In the south, you can take a winter coat or a quilted jacket. The rule in winter is to dress in layers as temperatures might change during the day, so pack some long-sleeve tops, warm sweaters , and cardigans .

A waterproof rain jacket can be useful, but I would suggest taking an umbrella, as it is more handy and fashionable.

To maximize your vacation time, fly into the city where you’re starting your trip and out of the city where your trip ends. Many times it’s the same price and saves you from having to spend extra time and money to go back to where you started your trip.

How do I get around Italy?

Italy has several great transportation options that make it easy for you to get around Italy and hop from city to city. Train is one of the most popular options for traveling from one region to another. Seat61 is an excellent website offering extensive train travel tips for destinations around the world including Italy train travel.

Trenitalia operates three different high-speed rail options, Frecciabianca, Frecciargento, and Frecciarossa, and you can easily book tickets or look at schedules online at Trenitalia . Dear Alex, I could really use your expert help! I’m a 60 year old fashion forward man, well traveled in Italy and typically for a month, and only take carry-on luggage. All of your advice to others above is spot on! My upcoming 2-month trip (mid-Mar to Mid-May’22 – half by car/half trains) is creating a clothing dilemma for me as I’m traveling from cold to warm, early spring to late spring, formal to informal and multi-country. Month 1: Milan-Verona-Bologna/Emilia Romagna region; Month 2: Menton FR-Aix-Bordeaux-Bilboa, SP-Barcelona-home/USA. I like to blend in and I’ve always been able to stay in the gray/black color scheme so everything goes with everything. But other than Milan/Verona, this trip feels more like lighter colors (mid-blues/blacks/whites) are in order. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

We are going to Athens, Santorini start of September then the across to Italy for 3 weeks from 9th September. I have downloaded your packing list to help me get started. I was just in Northern Italy last week. Polo shirts are very popular with Italian men. Guys 30 and under wear shorts but those older do not in the cities. Metallic or beaded sneakers were popular with women and in store windows.

After having been in Bologna for around 4 months now, since August (summer), I can’t say I’ve really paid attention to what people are wearing. Contrary to (probably popular) belief, I wouldn’t say Italians dress over-the-top / always-in-fashion — or if they have, I just didn’t notice it? I felt like everyone dresses pretty “normally”, i.e., I’ve never really had a problem with what I’ve worn. EXCEPT:

I do recall feeling a taaaaad out-of-place during the summer, with my sleeveless top and shorts (not even that short, mind you). I could totally tell that those who were in shorts were almost all tourists. (Then again, it was Ferragosto, which is basically a month-long holiday during August, so there weren’t many locals around to begin with.) But, at the same time, I think there were those of the younger (i.e., my) generation Italians who would wear shorts too. Although, if you want to visit any of the churches, I’m saying it now: No shorts / sleeveless. 😛

I can’t wear flats for lack of proper support, so I think I’ve finally found some clog-type shoes that are really comfy to wear for excursions – though not very pretty. Hi there! I will be going to Florence, Venice, and Rome from December 23-Jan 3 and I am trying to figure out what shoes to bring. I am leaning towards booties/heels for night time and a pair of oxfords for day time exploring the cities, but I’m not sure if oxfords will be warm enough. Is it still common in Italy (specifically, Venice or Cinque Terre) that restaurants don’t let you in without heels?

Great informative article on what to wear. I would absolutely caution not to wear flip flops unless you’re at the beach since you’ll immediately stand out as a tourist. As a far as revealing clothing, just make sure you always have a light jacket and I would avoid short shorts. Italians are bit more modest in their dress but they always layer and accessories. As long at you throw on a light blazer and a scarf you’ll look great.

My husband and I are planning on spending a few weeks in Italy late Sept/early October, these lists are wonderful! Also, thanks for posting a list for men, that’s very helpful. The last time I was there in May I got cold at night and was wondering if I could wear my flat black “riding” boots. They are so comfy to walk in but I don’t want to look out of place. How to dress in Singapore: a visitor & tourist guide

Ever wonder what to wear in Singapore? As you may know I live in Singapore which is a hot and humid place. So let’s discuss how to dress in Singapore and stay cool throughout the day.

Dressing for Singapore weather

The weather here can make dressing in a way which is cool, comfortable AND stylish difficult.

But, I’ve learned a few tricks along the way which I share with you now to make thinking about what to wear in Singapore easy – whether you’re visiting, vacationing or relocating.

Temperatures range from about 33 C (89.6 F) during the day in Singapore to 22 C  (71.6 F) in the evening. This is combined with a very high humidity level of about 94%.  

As you can imagine, the weather is rather sticky here.

This weather is pretty much the same the whole year round.

‘m not complaining though; I very much prefer the Singapore weather to that of my home country The Netherlands, where it is usually cold and miserable.

But how to dress for Singapore?

Now you may think that dressing for Singapore is a breeze, which it is, if you stay outside all the time.

In that case all you need are some shorts and a singlet or t-shirt.

The less you wear, the better and pure cotton, linen or silk is mandatory.

You may want to pack an extra t-shirt in your bag, because you will sweat all over in no time at all.

So make sure to take your deodorant with you as well!

HOWEVER, most of you will not just walk outside, as a lot of Singapore’s activities take place indoors.

And then dressing in Singapore comes with whole new challenges.

So here is a quick how to dress and pack for Singapore guide in case you ever come to visit me 🙂

Singapore’s changing temperatures

Above I am wearing my Rollie sneakers . It’s rare to see women wearing heels in Singapore except for nights’ out because you will tend to do lots of walking.

Although the outside temperature is hot and pretty much the same whole year round, it is a different story when you go indoors.

Air conditioning is everywhere in Singapore and the Singaporeans like their aircon freezing cold.

On a recent visit to the chiropractor the lady was wearing a big winter jacket and scarf indoors. No kidding!

The problem is that even though you may not like the aircon, it is often centrally controlled and in many offices and buildings you cannot turn it off.

My general dressing advice for what to wear in Singapore

So my advice to everyone visiting Singapore is to always take a cardigan, pashmina or scarf, wherever you go.

You never know when freezing temperatures (indoors) are going to hit you.

Blazers are not so practical as they are far too hot outside, but pashminas and cardigans can easily be stowed away in your handbag.

And if you take both, you will be covered for every situation.

What to wear in Singapore in…

The office : temperature can vary a lot, but some offices are really freezing cold. Business attire tends to be quite formal. Depending on the temperature in your office it’s ok to wear suits with blazers.

It’s always best to wear layers as you never quite know what the temperature is going to be like. I always see visits to business offices as an opportunity to wear a nice suit or pants.

A Taxi : taxis are affordable and everywhere in Singapore. So chances are you enter one on your stay here. The temperature inside taxis here is freezing cold though, so be prepared.

The Park : anywhere outside in Singapore, you want to wear as little as possible. Singles and shorts / skirts are the most comfortable. Or wear a long sleeved very thin cotton shirt so you’re covered and protected from the sun.

Metro (MRT) is air-conditioned everywhere.

Shopping malls tend to be on the cold side too, although you usually get away with a light scarf here. There are a LOT of shopping malls in Singapore so expect to spend a lot of time there, when you’re into fashion!

The Cinemas are very cold as well, so I always wear long pants when going there. This is actually a good occasion to wear a jacket as well. Most cinemas are inside shopping malls, so you can try on your ‘warmer’ clothes for once.

Fairs tend to be a place to show of your best day clothes. So dress up for the occasion.

Parties : definitely dress up for these. If outside, then wear your sexiest party dress. Do the same for inside but be sure to bring some cover.

Fancy bars and clubs : guys be sure to wear long pants! Although you can wear shorts in many bars here, some of the fancier ones (like the popular Skypark bar at Marina Bay Sands) require you to wear long pants. Otherwise they will not let you in.

A “what to wear in Singapore” travel capsule

If you’re visiting for a short break in Singapore, you will want to think about creating a travel capsule !

I tend to think that keeping your capsule to three colors will mean you can mix and match everything in your closet. Go for a mix of prints, patterns and plain pieces to give your capsule interest.

Singapore clothes: Wear natural fabrics

I love natural fabrics not only because of the way they look, but because they keep me cooler in the hot climate of Singapore.

If you wear polyester or other manmade fabrics here, they tend to keep heat, and sweat, in and you can soon start to feel pretty uncomfortable, making them impractical options for what to wear in Singapore.

Having said that, some of the modern fabrics used in athletic wear are especially designed to be moisture-wicking, so if you are planning on some walking or hiking through nature parks and reservoirs like Macritchie or taking a trip to do some cycling on the little island of Pulau Ubin, you could think about packing some lightweight tops and shorts or leggings.

What style of clothing do residents wear? Is there a Singapore dress code?

A good way to decide what to wear in Singapore is to think about what locals wear. You will find that Singapore is a place of fairly classic dressing. It’s unusual to see anything too outlandish in this cosmopolitan city. 

Most Singaporeans dress very formally for work. However, when not at work or a party, Singapore tends to be a very casual place. Most people live in tee-shirts, shorts and flip-flops. 

Tops for Singapore

As with any trip, you want to make sure that the pieces you take with you to wear in Singapore are versatile and will work hard in your travel closet.

Choose tops in natural fabrics that you can wear with your shorts, skirts and cropped pants. You can always dress them up with jewelry. Also make sure you have a top that is a little smarter for evening.

Coats, jackets and cardigans for Singapore

On the face of it, it may seem ridiculous to pack outerwear for Singapore. However, if you are planning on spending any time at all in taxis, malls, cinemas and certain bars and restaurants, you will find that the air conditioning is very cold.

You may want to slip a cardigan or lightweight blazer over your outfit to ensure that you don’t get too chilly. Just bear in mind that you are likely to want to fold up whatever coat or cardigan you take with you.

Singapore can also have rain at any time of year; sometimes very heavy rain showers. However, I tend to carry an umbrella with me rather than a raincoat or anorak as I find I get too hot outside in an extra layer. 

If you are doing a fair amount of walking, however, you may prefer to pack a jacket. Make it a lightweight, travel jacket that you can fold up and pop into your bag in cash of rain. Otherwise, you may end up wearing one of those rather attractive plastic tourist ponchos.

Singapore fashion: Pants for Singapore

You will want a mix of shorts for day and pants which can be used for both day and evening.

You may find that it makes your packing easier to choose mainly plain pants for your “what to wear in Singapore” capsule so that you can mix and match your tops more easily.

Dresses and skirts for Singapore

Pack a nice evening dress in case you want to head to a swish restaurant or bar. While Singapore is quite casual by day, and you will definitely see many people at bars, particularly those which are indoor/outdoor venues, still in tee-shirts and shorts, there are also lots of opportunities to dress up.

Singaporean women definitely like looking elegant and classic. 

I would also pack a dress which can take you from day to evening, and skirts or dresses you can wear casually during the day.

Swimwear for Singapore

Depending on your trip itinerary, you may well find yourself doing a spot of swimming in Singapore. You could opt to head to one of the beach clubs at Sentosa or you may be very glad of a cool dip in your hotel pool after a day of sightseeing. 

As you would expect from a city sitting almost on the equator, Singapore is hot and humid. You can get burnt whether the sun is shining or it is an overcast day. So, I would also opt for a rash vest to make sure you can cover up if you want to spend the day at the beach either relaxing or paddleboarding. I’d also include a cover-up in case you want to pop that over your swimsuit for lunch.

Shoes for Singapore

Unless you are working while you are in Singapore, or you are heading out for a meal or party which doesn’t require much, or any, walking, Singapore is all about flat shoes.

It’s quite rare to see anyone wearing high heels on the streets of Singapore. Think about flip flops and comfy shoes that you can walk in to see sights such as the Botanic Gardens, Marina Bay Sands or Gardens by the Bay, or that you are comfortable in for a spot of retail therapy on Orchard Road. 

Plus, the benefit of flip flops is that if it does rain, your shoes won’t get ruined.

Accessories for Singapore

Umbrellas, hats and sunglasses are all vital accessories in Singapore.

Singapore is one of the safest cities in the world, so you would have to be very unlucky to fall victim to crime.

I’ve even seen people leaving their mobile phones on the table to “chope” or keep their table in the local hawker markets while they pop to one of the food stalls to put in their order – not that I would recommend that. The other local option is to put down a packet of tissues! 

But, you may still want to opt for a specially designed traveller bag so you can keep all of your valuables safe, and keep your hands free. 

When choosing a travel bag, make sure you find one you can fit a bottle of water in as you will want to carry water with you wherever you go to make sure you don’t get dehydrated.

In the end, packing for Singapore is pretty easy. A lot of breezy clothes,  and some scarves and cardigans. Enjoy the lovely temperature in the evenings, where you can sit on a terrace with almost nothing on and take in the atmosphere of Singapore! You should definitely come and visit.

I had the choice of going to Japan or Singapore this month, and I chose Singapore because I wanted some warm weather! but hearing that it’s extremely humid has me dreading my decision! I never really liked Hong Kong because I felt it was too muggy and now Singapore sounds worse! doh! Thanks for the tips though, at least i’ll be prepared…i hope

Hi Gemma. Thunderstroms are usually short and when one comes, you will just hide somewhere. It is still very hot, so you don’t need anything other than a light cardigan for the indoor airconditioned spaces. Although you can expect a shower everyday, they usually don’t last long so you should still be able to plan all your activities around them.

Thanks for the advices sylvia..I’m heading to Singapore with my friends…and that’s the first time I’m going on a foreign trip…Singapore sounds amazing and there are a lot of lovely places there to be visited…I was really concerned about what to wear there as in india the weather of this part of the year is really cold and dry…so there was a big confusion about what to wear…Warm clothes or cool ones…Your article proved to be very helpful to me…but one thing I wanted to ask that if it is alright to wear skin tight jeans or knee length shorts here during the day time….????

Streetstyle is very casual here so you can certainly wear those. Skin tight jeans will be a lot warmer of course so lose clothing is preferred when you are sightseeing. When commenting again please don’t use shorthand as I had to edit your entire comment and fully spell the words…

Your advice is just what I was looking for – it’s hard to imagine Singapore’s temperatures from damp chilly Manchester,UK. Thanks so much for this advice. My mom and I are coming to Singapore in November after a little over a week in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We live in the US – one in Denver where its hot but dry and the other in San Francisco where its cool but humid. We were both scratching our heads at what we should pack since I’m 41 and she’s 68, so we know better than to show up in shorts, tank tops, and flip flops looking like we are headed for the beach. I’ll bring a cardigan and pashmina both now! I’d already planned to bring linen pants and cotton tops.

Hi! Glad to have found this post. I am off to Singapore next week to visit my sister who lives there. I’m a 46 year-old slim woman and always wear pretty short shorts at home in the summer. Should I plan to keep my legs / upper legs covered with skirts or longer shorts while in Singapore?

If you are outside in the evening all you will need is a very light top. It’s still very warm in the evening. No need for a sweater. You will only need a sweater or cardigan when you are inside as the aircon can be too cool. That is why cardigans are so good as you can just pop then on when needed. Theatre dressing is not so formal. Many people wear their nicest clothes but there is also quite a lot of casual attire. Make sure to bring a cardi (aircon again). No definitely leave your boots at home. They are much too hot for Singapore!

What to Wear in Thailand: Stay Practical, Cool & Respectful

Upon landing in Thailand, you’ll likely be greeted by warm, sunny weather and a serious blast of humidity.

That jumper you wore on the plane will have you sweating like crazy as soon as you exit the airport arrivals floor.

But before you tear off your clothes and go bare-chested, or put on a bikini or pair of Speedos, bear in mind that Thai culture promotes a conservative dress code in public.

With this in mind, you will need to pack clothes that help you stay cool and look casual, and conservative when necessary – when visiting cultural sites and temples.

It's not just about making sure you're not offending anyone, but also about being comfortable and not dripping in sweat.

This guide will help you pack the right attire for your trip:

You'll learn what's appropriate on the beach and in the local town, what clothes are best to wear when shopping in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and what clobber to wear in the evening when you're up for a party.

From the shops to the beach to the bar, this guide contains everything you need to know.

What to Wear in Thailand: Cultural Tips 101

Traditional dress in Thailand is modest, characterized by fitted clothes that cover the legs and arms.

Even though it's boiling hot, you may be shocked to see Thais wearing long trousers (pants) and long sleeves. Often just looking at locals makes you feel hot.

One reason for this is to cover their skin from the sun, but another is that Thai culture values modesty, along with respect and courtesy too.

Many Thais, particularly women, feel more comfortable in modest clothing. That's not to say Thai women don't love dressing up for an evening out like Western females do, but there's a time and a place.

This is certainly the case at local temples and when visiting government buildings and places considered to be of a “high level”.

Unsuspecting tourists may find themselves getting a few frowns from locals for wearing package-hugging shorts and a vest at a temple, or for walking shirtless around a shopping center.

Aim to be a traveler who’s in touch with the local customs by treating places of worship and authority with respect.

Of course this is a holiday, and naturally you'll be packing your shorts, vests, and flip flops, but you should also bring some full length trousers and a shirt or two with you – one with short and one with long sleeves.

For those staying at 4/5 star hotels, it isn't the done thing to wear a vest down to dinner in the evening, so you may need some casual garments.

For men: throw in a couple of polo shirts, button-down collared shirts, and full length cotton/linen trousers. You'll certainly need these if visiting the Grand Palace and other temples.

For women: bring along loose pants and tops that cover the shoulders. Summer dresses are great as they are versatile and can be worn in many situations, keeping you cool and looking modest.

For public places, you might choose to avoid spaghetti strap tops, especially without a bra underneath – this is a classic tourist error.

That said, you can always drape a shawl or sweater over your shoulders when need be.

All tops should have modest necklines. Too much cleavage is considered immodest, particularly on public transport.

Even though you will most likely see some cleavage on show from young Thai women, particularly in Bangkok, you won't get a pass because you are the foreigner :).

That's the way it goes!

Materials for Keeping Cool

If possible, wear clothes made from a moisture-wicking fabric; it will help immensely with the heat and humidity.

If you can’t find quick-dry, buy clothes that are synthetic-polyester blends.

Though they don’t sound appealing, they’ll be much lighter and airier than cotton, which gets soggy from sweat.

Be careful with your choice of long pants and jeans. While an acceptable form of leg wear, they can also be stifling if you’re not used to the heat. The last thing you want is a sweaty crutch and wet patches showing on your bottom.

Choose light, airy garments. Thailand gets really humid; to the point that you'll find yourself sweating just minutes after having a shower.

Keep a light top or shawl handy, though. The air-con in malls, shops, and hotels can be really cold, and coming in from one temperature extreme to another can at times make you feel feverish – especially when you're feeling jet lagged.

Practical Footwear

Before you depart on your Thai adventure, don’t forget to consider your footwear.

You should opt for comfort first and style second. After all, you are likely to be doing a lot of walking.

Some tuff rubber-soled sandal-type shoes – with good ventilation – that can easily be slipped on and off are perfect.

Instead of, or in addition to, bringing flip flops for the beach, I recommend beach shoes that can be worn around the pool, on the beach and in the water. Flip flops are good for slipping on and off but beach shoes can be kept on and tend to protect your feet better.

Keep in mind that if it rains it may be slippery ( check the weather for that time of year), and the water can come up past your ankles in some places. So don’t waste space packing too many heels or shoes that can’t be worn in a range of weather situations.

When it rains, it can rain hard. You don't want to be wearing socks and non-waterproof shoes!

Avoid bringing shoes that insulate your feet, like heavily lined boots. Such shoes require socks, which you generally won't be wearing. Socks get very smelly in Thailand!

If you're trekking this will be an exception, but go for lightweight trekking boots if you can.

Note that you will be removing your shoes frequently, as it is customary to take off your shoes when entering Thai homes, some shops, your hotel room, and temples. So you'll want to pack easy slip-on-slip-off shoes.

While taking off your shoes is customary when entering someone's home and some shops, do not walk around without shoes on in the street.

This is a common mistake that tourists make, particularly on the islands.

The islands make you feel free and want to let go of your cultural norms, but Thai culture has specific rules pertaining to feet. Walking around the city and then entering a temple, home or shop is considered dirty and potentially offensive.

Certainly don't sit down and put your feet up so that they are pointing at people waking past or sitting opposite. Soles of the feet should remain on the floor.

Clothes for City Shopping

When shopping, adhere to the general rules of modesty and wear clean, non-revealing clothes.

Casual-cool is a good way to describe a positive dress code.

Again, just because you see a Thai person doing it, doesn't mean you should do it too.

You may see a woman wearing a really short skirt and high heels, or a man with his t-shirt rolled up to his chest to give his stomach some air, but that doesn't mean it's acceptable for you to do the same.

Ladies, wear a bra, or a sports bra if that's more comfortable in the heat. No nipple exposure please!

Men, no Euro-style shorts with your package on show. And put a top on. We don't care if you have a six-pack or not, even though I'm jealous!

Thailand Dress-Code at the Beach

Thousands travel to Thailand’s southern shores to splash in the Kingdom’s crystal blue waters, which of course necessitates a bathing suit.

You'll notice when you go to the beach that most Thais are fully clothed on both sand and in the sea.

This is quite typical; largely because they are covering up from the sun and don't want to get any browner.

You will notice that Thais tend to go to the beach after 4pm when the sun is much weaker. They think we are crazy for doing otherwise!

So, what should you wear on the beach in Thailand?

Two-piece swimsuits are fine on the beach, but have a sarong to hand to cover up when you walk away from the beach.

Swimming trunks or shorts are acceptable for men, and it is generally acceptable for female travelers to wear a two-piece bathing suit.

Women should try to wear suits that are not overly revealing, especially in areas of Thailand that are adjacent to Malaysia: there’s a large, conservative Muslim population there.

Thongs are generally a no-no and may attract a lot of the wrong attention.

The beach is pretty relaxed though, and no one is going to tell you off for a revealing costume.

Topless bathing is unacceptable, and certainly don't go nude!

What you really need to be aware of at the seaside is the etiquette when walking away from the beach.

Always have a cover-up handy, and never walk through a neighboring beach town without proper shoes and a sarong or t-shirt on.

The same rules apply for riding motorbikes. Visitors should never hop atop a scooter in their bathing suits or without shoes.

That said, many guys wear swimming shorts instead of trunks, which are of course fine for riding a scooter.

Either way, good etiquette is to put on shorts and t-shirt/vest when riding/walking around.

Visiting Temples & Historical Sites

If you’re visiting a temple, opt for loose fitting breathable clothes.

The general rule is that the shoulders and knees should be covered; a practice that applies to both men and women.

Women should opt for knee-length shorts, a skirt to the knee or beyond, or a dress. Leggings are often frowned upon, so try to wear flowing pants or a long skirt if you can.

Women can carry a sarong or scarf to tie around their waist or throw over their shoulders if need be.

Men should completely button their long sleeve shirts and wear trousers. Cotton or linen full length trousers work nicely, as does a long sleeve cotton/linen top, with or without buttons.

These tops are great for temple visits. Pick one up for around 200 Baht in Thailand.

Some temples are stricter than others, and you may not be allowed to enter if you don't have the proper garb. The Grand Palace in Bangkok is a prime example of strict dress code.

Clothes for Trekking

If you’re planning a jungle adventure, you’ll need to pack accordingly.

Be sure to bring good hiking or trekking shoes/boots that have a deep tread. The Thai jungle is often wet from rain, and you don’t want to slip.

Be sure that your boots are lightweight and easy-dry. Pack long socks that will cover your ankles and shin skin.

Keep in mind that sandals and other open style footwear are a bad idea for even light trekking, since they allow easy access for hungry mosquitoes and leeches, not to mention that any exposed skin may be hurt on hazardous terrain.

Though it’ll likely be humid, your best bet is to hike in sports leggings, long pants or light sweatpants.

It’s also wise to bring along a poncho or raincoat in case of a sudden downpour. Always carry mosquito and bug repellent on a jungle adventure.

Clothes for the Bar & Disco

If all you’re after is a cold beer at the end of a hot day, you can relax because most casual bars in Thailand don’t have a dress code.

Of course, a fancy hotel will have a dress code, and “hi-society” bars and clubs in areas of Bangkok like Thong Lor will do too.

Regardless, you’ll want to make sure that you’re seen in a good light and that you're being respectful.

Choose tops with sleeves and bottoms that extend to the knees.

Wear shoes, and make sure you’re showered, even after a long day of exploring in the sun! Thais tend to take at least two showers a day, so make sure you aren't the one smelly foreigner :).

If the venue is a fancy one in the city, you can bet that there will be a dress code.

Men should shy away from wearing vests, shorts, or flip flops.

Both men and women should eschew athletic wear and choose footwear other than sneakers.

Baseball hates usually aren't allowed, and the same goes for sandals and open-toed shoes.

General Footwear Tips

While they may not be everyone's cup of tea, Crocs are a lifesaver in Thailand.

Lightweight, comfortable, waterproof and bacteria free, they’re pretty much the optimal shoe for a climate like Thailand's.

For those who don't like the clog style Crocs, men can choose from a loafer style and women can even pick up Croc ballet flats.

You don't have to pay the expensive price for the original Croc brand either. There are a number of Croc-like shoes available in markets all across Thailand that will do the job.

The reason I suggest Crocs is because you won't want to wear socks in Thailand, but when you wear trainers or shoes with a thick lining, without socks the shoes will start to smell because of the bacteria that builds up in the heat.

The key is comfortable and breathable, and to avoid any shoe that will make your foot sweat and smell.

Your feet will definitely thank you!

There is no set dress code in Japan for tourists; however, you will fail to see many Japanese citizens revealing much of their bodies when out in public. 

Depending on which part of Japan you are visiting, temperatures in the summer months can reach highs of up to 90°.

At this point, the air is extremely humid, so a pair of shorts and a t-shirt are necessary. 

Keep In Mind: During these warmer months, Japanese women will often wear loose shorts and a t-shirt. The shoulders and cleavage are rarely on show, so covering these areas is advised.

Shoes, Or No Shoes?

Many Asian countries have a strict policy regarding wearing shoes indoors.

The reasoning behind this is to do with cleanliness.

Many years ago, the Japanese would remove their shoes to prevent stones and dirt from being brought inside the home.

This became a tradition, and you will fail to find many places that allow you to keep your shoes on indoors. 

So when will you be expected to take your shoes off?

At home or a hostel

Many Japanese homes have a genkan. This is a small entryway where shoes are removed.

Students are expected to remove their shoes when they arrive at school and change into indoor slippers.

Upon arrival, shoes are placed inside a wooden cupboard known as a getabako for the remainder of the school day.

School janitors are not a thing in Japan, and it is the students themselves who clean and take care of the school.

Therefore, the removal of shoes reduces the spreading of dirt.

You will find that almost all Moroccans who live in rural areas tend to dress in a traditional way, with both men and women choosing to wear full body covering modest clothes. They may even be offended at the sight of someone wearing revealing clothes, especially for women.

As it will be a very rare sight to see someone wearing something revealing, because the people who live there tend to be a lot more traditional and rigid than those who live in urban areas.

What to wear in Morocco during winter:

Most schools have a check-in desk where you'll receive a campus map and other literature. But don't bother furnishing schools with your portfolio.

"Students can leave their résumés at home," Henry Millar, a senior at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, said. "Tour guides generally do not have any sway in the admissions process whatsoever, so feel free to save the paper."

4. Pay attention on the tour, but do it solo if possible.

Some schools offer to let parents and kids take separate tours, which has advantages.

"Get excited about your child's potential future in college, but give them some space to see what they think of that school on their own," Nathan Weisbrod, a junior at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, told BI.

5. Ask all your questions, but avoid personal interrogations.

This is the time to inquire about any aspect of campus life , and don't feel shy about speaking up.

"Tour guides love getting questions because it allows us to cater the tour, especially in small groups, toward the needs and interests of the families on that specific tour," Halle Spataro, a senior at Bucknell University, said.

But some topics are off-limits, so don't ask your tour guide about their SAT scores , ACT scores , or what they wrote about in their essay .

6. Speak up, but let the student take the lead.

Parents may be tempted to raise their hands again and again, but this tour is about the student, so there should be space to let them shine.

"Try to take the back seat — or the passenger seat — but refrain from driving all of your child's interactions," Julian Jacklin, a junior at Reed College in Oregon, said. "Students who feel they can own that experience usually ask the most questions and engage with the tour more."

7. Say thanks, but don't leave with questions unanswered.

Maybe your guide didn't hear you, or your kid was reluctant to speak up. You can still get the information you want before leaving.

"There's a lot of information students are getting that day and a lot of excitement with being in a new place, which can make people forget to ask certain questions," Lorenzo Mars, a junior at Pepperdine University in California, said.

Therefore, get your tour guide's email address so that you can follow up .

8. You may know exactly what school is right but keep an open mind.

Don't be surprised if a city-living kid is suddenly intrigued by a small-town setting.

"The college search and college experience are all about getting to know yourself better and growing, so on a tour, students have to trust themselves and their judgment of the 'world' they've just stepped into," Thomas Elias, a senior at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, said .

9. Take in as much as possible, but remember to have fun.

Sure, preparing for the next four years can be scary and stressful. But it's also an exciting milestone, so enjoy the ride.

"These tours serve as great opportunities to learn more about colleges — along with their cities, culture, and people," Connor Gee, a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, said. "Have fun with it!"

10. Weigh the pros and cons of the school, but don't stop there.

Your tour may be over, but you can still learn other ways to immerse yourself in college life .

"See if the school offers additional experiences, like eating in the cafeteria or attending a class," Emily Balda, a senior at Seton Hall University in New Jersey, said. "Consider it 'food for thought.'"

We're less than two weeks away from the astronomical event of the decade: A total eclipse of the sun , which will grace the nation's skies from Texas to Maine on the afternoon of Monday, April 8 .

Millions of people are expected to travel to see the spectacle, which will also attract scientists from across the country to study its unique effects on the Earth and its atmosphere . (Meanwhile, brands such as Burger King, Pizza Hut, Applebee's and Sonic are getting in on the eclipse excitement too.)

The full total solar eclipse experience will plunge people along a narrow path into darkness midday, but people outside the path of totality can still use eclipse glasses to see the moon pass in front of the sun. It's an awesome and confusing sight on the ground and in the sky.

One task to do now is to get yourself a pair of special eclipse glasses (and luckily there's still time to score a free pair of eclipse glasses ). They're important eyewear during an eclipse because they will block out the sun's harmful rays, which could damage your eyes when you're looking at the sun — even if it's partially blocked.

Solar eclipse glasses are still readily available from plenty of vendors across the internet as of Thursday, March 28. But be wary of counterfeit or fake glasses , experts warned.

The other big factor everyone's anxiously awaiting is the weather forecast, which most experts say is still a bit far away for a specific forecast, though that hasn't stopped some meteorologists from issuing them already. But more detailed, realistic forecasts will start to roll in over the next few days.

Of particular interest will be the cloud forecast , as a deck of thick, low clouds would likely ruin the entire event. But if the clouds are higher up in the atmosphere, such as thin, wispy cirrus , they'd act to diffuse but not ruin the eclipse.

• Get the full experience in person : If you're in a narrow band of U.S. land that spans from Texas to Maine, you will see the moon block the sun and its shadow cast a night-like darkness over Earth for a few minutes. • Watch from outside the path of totality : Much of the U.S. will get a partial view of the eclipse that isn't nearly as impressive as being in the path of totality. Earth won't be plunged into complete darkness and you'll have to wear protective eyewear to see the moon partially block the sun.
• Watch a livestream : Check back on April 8 for a video feed from the path of totality. It's not the same as being there in person, but hey, at least you won't have to sit in traffic .

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path.

Where will the April eclipse be visible?

All of the lower 48 U.S. states will see the moon at least clip the sun, but that sight is a trifle compared to being in the path of totality.

Because the narrow path includes or is near some of the nation's largest cities, expect millions of people to crowd into a band of land a little over 100 miles wide that spans from the Texas/Mexico border to the Maine/Canada border.

Will clouds block the April 2024 eclipse?

It's too soon to say for sure, but history offers some clues.

Chances of cloudy skies are pretty high along much of the eclipse's northern path, and some areas such as Buffalo have about a 1-in-3 chance of clear skies in early April.

Skies are usually more clear to the south. Right along the Texas/Mexico border, chances of a clear sky can be nearly 75%.

Keep in mind that clouds don't always ruin an eclipse . High, wispy clouds won't spoil the show in the same way that low thick clouds would. In that case, you wouldn't be able to see the moon pass in front of the sun, but you would still notice a sudden darkness in the path of totality.

What dangers are associated with the eclipse?

The  eclipse , as exciting and fun as it promises to be, comes with a growing number of safety warnings — both for what will happen in the sky and what will happen on the ground.

In addition to the dangers of looking at the eclipse without proper eyewear, we've heard warnings about potentially dangerous  fake eclipse glasses , the possibility for increased  car  c rashes  around the time of the eclipse — and possible  air travel headaches  due to delayed or cancelled flights.

Where is the best place to watch the eclipse?

Texas is considered the best state for eclipse viewing . There's a good chance the skies will be clear and its location along the southern path of the eclipse means totality will last a little longer.

A few lucky travelers will also have a front-row seat with unobstructed views — from a plane .

Will traffic be bad?

Most likely, yes — especially after the eclipse ends . Millions of people will crowd into the narrow path of totality, then many will attempt to leave all at once as soon as the eclipse is over.

When a total solar eclipse passed over the U.S. in 2017, reports say some traffic jams didn't fully clear for more than 12 hours. Even worse, a recent study reported that the 2017 eclipse "was associated with increased risks of a fatal traffic crash" – potentially as much as a 31% increase, the study said .

Also worth noting: The eclipse is expected to have impacts for air travel as well.

Why are schools closing for the eclipse?

Primarily out of a concern for students' safety, schools across the country have given students  the day of the eclipse, April 8,  as a day off, a half day or a chance for e-learning. In Tennessee, for example, officials also say it gives students a chance  to experience the eclipse with their family and friends .

UNDERSTANDING THE 2024 ECLIPSE

What is a solar eclipse definition explained..

A total solar eclipse happens when three celestial spheres — the sun, moon and Earth — line up in a specific way in space.

According to NASA, a solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth. That alignment casts a moving shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun's light in some areas. This leads to a period of partial or full darkness on a narrow stretch of Earth. 

The path is so narrow because of the huge distance and size of the sun — as well as the moon's distance from Earth. That focuses the moon's shadow on an area of land much smaller than the moon itself. The movement of the shadow across the land happens as the Earth's rotation interacts with the orbit of the moon.

A total eclipse only happens occasionally because the moon doesn't orbit in the exact same plane as the sun and Earth do. In addition, a solar eclipse can only happen during a new moon.

What's special about a total solar eclipse?

The total solar eclipse on April 8  is causing such a stir because the rare event is an astronomical experience like no other that will be unusually accessible to millions of people.

April's total solar eclipse will fall over more places in the U.S. than the total eclipse before and after it. And the broad length of the path of totality – where Americans have the best shot of getting a clear view – is "much wider"  than it was for the eclipse in 2017 , according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

A total solar eclipse is also far more impressive  than a lunar or an annular solar eclipse. Historically, eclipses have left major marks on religious and spiritual civilizations. In Christianity, an eclipse has been associated with the darkness that accompanied Jesus' crucifixion and in Islam, the passing of the Prophet Muhammad's son Ibrahim.

The USA's most recent total solar eclipse was on August 21, 2017, and stretched from Oregon to South Carolina.

When will the next solar eclipse happen?

The  next visible total solar eclipse  to cross over the U.S. after April will come in more than two decades on Aug. 23, 2044, according to NASA.

And that eclipse won't be as accessible as the 2024 one: The path of totality in 2044 will only touch the states of Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach and political space advocacy. Another total eclipse  will pass over the U.S. in 2045  that will be more accessible to Americans, including for people who live in California, Florida and Nevada.

ECLIPSE GLASSES AND SAFETY

What are eclipse glasses and why are they needed for the eclipse.

Gazing at the bright rays from the eclipse without  protective eyewear  can seriouslt damage your eye, so wearing a pair of protective glasses is important.

There's a technical standard for eclipse glasses, which are designed to block out most light and let you safely see the moon pass in front of the sun: It's called ISO 12312-2 after the International Organization of Standardization.

While there's concerns that not all glasses marketed as eclipse glasses live up to that standard, experts say usually the shortcomings aren't significant .

But as the 2024 eclipse approaches, the American Astronomical Society  has warned that there are some counterfeit and fake eclipse glasses being sold from unverified vendors that would be unsafe to use during the eclipse. They recommend buying from a vetted vendor and testing the glasses before the eclipse.

How do I get solar eclipse glasses?

How can you test eclipse glasses?

NASA shared an easy method to check eclipse glasses at home.

Buyers should put on their glasses and look at a bright light, like a flashlight. If the light is "extremely dim," or doesn't appear at all, the glasses are safe, Susannah Darling, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in an instructional video. Viewers should be able to see the filament of the lightbulb, not the glow surrounding the bulb.

Can you really go blind watching a solar eclipse?

You could severely damage your eyes . Directly staring at the sun before and after the total eclipse, or watching a partial eclipse outside the path of totality without proper eye protection, can result in permanent damage including blurred and altered vision.

While rare, eye damage from watching a partial eclipse happens in part because a person's natural response to squint when looking at sunlight does not get triggered. In the lead-up to the  April 8 solar eclipse ,  doctors and a rare set of eclipse watchers are warning about  watching this planetary event without adequate eclipse glasses or with the naked eye.

It’s hard for experts to know or even estimate how many people experience eye damage from solar eclipses. Since looking at an eclipse does not cause complete blindness, people with permanent damage may not know they have it or report it to a doctor. The 2017 eclipse , which passed from Oregon to South Carolina, is thought to have caused about 100 cases, according to the  American Astronomical Society .

How can I watch the eclipse without glasses?

If you don't have access to eclipse glasses do not use regular sunglasses — You need a more creative solution for safe viewing, like a pinhole projector .

Welding glasses are not recommended for eclipse viewing .

Should I take dogs or cats to see the eclipse? Is it safe for pets?

An eclipse itself isn't dangerous for domestic animals such as dogs and cats, but experts say it's probably best to not bring pets .

Experts' biggest concern is not what’s happening in the sky but on the ground as crowds of excited and anxious people gather, said Dr. Rena Carlson, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

“Rather than the effects of the eclipse, I would be more worried about the excitement and all of the people,” she said.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 contains a few extra color options that aren’t available in the initial character customization process, but the game doesn’t tell you about them at all. If you’re looking for new ways to spice up your look, here’s how to unlock and use dye in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

How to Unlock Dye

Dye can be bought from Alexia at the pawn guild in Bakbattahl , so it may take you a while to get to this vendor. Make your way through the border checkpoint between Vermund and Battahl and walk into the capital city to find what you’re looking for.

The pawn guild in Bakbattahl is located in the northwest corner of the city, next to the riftstone. There are only five types of dye, and they each cost 500 Rift Crystals, which is a bit expensive for a simple color change.

How to Use Dye

To use dye, enter a store where customization options are offered. In Vernworth, go to Clovis’s Barberie , and in Bakbattahl, go to Mettefere’s Cosmetics . The dyes will automatically become available for use when you speak to the shopkeeper, and they can only be used as extra hair colors.

Choose the Change Hairstyle option that costs 10,000 gold to apply whichever dye you’d like to see on your character. You can also modify your entire physical appearance at once with an Art of Metamorphosis item.

Currently, there doesn’t seem to be a way to change the color of your armor or weapons using these dyes or any other method.
