Nanortalik is on Nanortalik Island in southern Greenland .

Understand [ edit ]

Nanortalik is one of Greenland's "larger" towns, with a population of 1,256 in 2018. It is similar in size to Narsaq , and like Narsaq, is much smaller in number of restaurants and attractions than major town Qaqortoq . The name Nanortalik is Greenlandic for "the polar bear place," but the chance of seeing any polar bears in Nanortalik these days is not very big. However, a few polar bears can be spotted during spring as they hitch rides on the drifting ice from eastern parts of Greenland.

Nanortalik is home for one of South Greenland's most comprehensive museums set up in the old colonial buildings, each one of them telling a piece of the history of Nanortalik. This "Open Air Museum" offers visitors a chance to see kayak's, the women's boats, pit huts and other interesting things form the past.

Like many towns in Greenland, Nanortalik is slowly decreasing in population. Settlements like Nanortalik are in danger of disappearing.

Get in [ edit ]

Basically there are 2 ways to get to Greenland, it is either from Iceland by Icelandair or Denmark by Air Greenland . During summer season port of entry to South Greenland is via Narsarsuaq Airport which is between mid June to the end of September. From then on means of transportation is by sea or air with Diskoline from Narsarsuaq to Nanortalik.

There is a ferry stop and a heliport in Nanortalik. Otherwise, like most towns in Greenland, there are no roads connecting it to other towns. Getting to anywhere in Greenland without a tour guide is a challenge.

Get around [ edit ]

The town is only a few hundred yards wide, so getting around Nanortalik should not be a problem.

Charming nanortalik, greenland summer walking tour – wildflowers, icebergs & music.

Nanortalik, Greenland

Nanortalik is a charming village to see and is on the route for cruises crossing the Atlantic.  As an Acupuncturist-at-Sea on a cruise ship I enjoyed my Nanortalik Greenland walking tour very much and love sharing my experience.   Because it is so small, you can easily enjoy the village in a half-day adventure.  So, read on to learn about how to make the most of your time in this unique port-of-call.  I was there the end of July, so enjoyed sunny skies with large swaths of yellow wildflowers.

Nanortalik means “Place of Polar Bears,” even though they are rarely seen here.  The small village of about 1200 inhabitants is on an island on the shores of the Labrador Sea.  While the winters are understandably cold the summer is a great time to visit with temperatures that reaches the highs into the 40’s – 50’s F.   Also, it lies at the mouth of the Tasermiut Fjord in a very picturesque setting.   The locals are very friendly and love to sing, so you can expect street performers and even a choir in the church.

Nanortalik Greenland Walking Tour What to See & Do in a Half-Day

I absolutely loved my 3-hour walking tour here and pretty much experienced it all spontaneously without preparation.  I just walked down the main street toward the old town and became immediately entertained with murals, the landscapes and scenery, along with the friendly locals.  Firstly, I just walked around and took in the views of the granite knolls carpeted with yellow wildflowers, enveloped by mountains and sea.  The morning sun burned off the fog and vibrant, blue sky appeared.

I walked by the main wooden church with choir performances every hour.  Then, I went to the Old Town, preserved by about 10 buildings with vintage artifacts and photos.  It cost about $10 and was well worth it.  The setting helps you to imagine what it was like to live in this remote area, especially more than 100 years ago.

IMG_2541

The buildings in the Old Town housed various artifacts needed for survival in this part of the world.  For example, I went inside an old blubber house, a fish packing plant and peat house.  There is a Greenland Flagpole that I climbed its ladder to the top for a 360-degree panoramic view of the sea, mountains and even lingering icebergs.  I found a bench seaside with a large iceberg less than 20 feet from me.  It was interesting to sit in the presence of this unique testament to the northern chill.

Lastly, I stopped in the church to listen to the choir and then walked on down the street to listen to the street performers.

IMG_2539

The locals were very friendly and festive with their music and arts for sale.   Two young girls approached me with puppies.   Also, there were signs for one hour water tours to see the icebergs.  And there was a busy café called Café 44.  Overall, it’s a charming experience with a sense of being off the beaten path.

Nanortalik is similar, however smaller than the nearby Qaqortoq.  Both are very dramatic with brightly colored buildings and dramatic scenery.  To learn more about these southern Greenland destinations, check out my other blogs.

Glad you found this website helpful. However I did not do the iceberg tour so do not know the cost. Enjoy Nanortalik!

Good morning, I would like to know if it is possible to see icebergs in Nanortalik without taking a boat trip, just by walking along the water’s edge

Yes, the icebergs float close to shore, but they do move so no guarantee for the day you are there. There were icebergs close to shore when I was there.

When I was there, I saw a couple close to the waters edge in Nanortalik. However, it always changes. The icebergs float nearby but to see a lot of them, it is best to do boat tour. If you are on a cruise, you will probably see many icebergs on the cruise.

Cruise Greenland

The white church of Nanortalik in South Greenland

Icebergs, archipelagos, polar bears, sheep farms, the mighty Atlantic Ocean and rugged mountainscapes help shape the exciting Nanortalik region in the southernmost part of South Greenland.

There is a land’s end feeling to the Nanortalik region, akin to the North Cape in Europe and other remote but accessible edges of large landmasses. Out here the Atlantic Ocean meets rugged coastlines and human settlements, and cruises to Nanortalik are often on a transatlantic itinerary either east- or westbound, and often with a trip further up the coast into Western Greenland included.

Deep fjords, steep mountains, and icebergs may remind travelers of East Greenlandic landscapes while green meadows, farmed hillsides and even patches of forest echo the kind of landscape the Norse first met when they arrived here 1,000 years ago and named the place Greenland.

Nanortalik itself is the largest fishing and hunting community in the southeastern parts of South Greenland but with no more than 1,300 souls this is a tiny town compared to the outside world.

Life here is tied to the seasonal rhythms of sea and fjord fishing, the arrival of sea ice in the spring and tending to sheep on the farms inland, and in a series of images and words below we have told the story of both everyday life and cruise experiences in town.

The most popular hikes are perhaps the trips to Klosterdalen and Quinnguadalen, which have views of the fells of up to 2,000 metres and lots of glaciers.

Nanortalik Tourism has hikes of various levels of difficulty and duration: from day-long excursions to week-long hikes with tent and equipment. Practically all equipment can be hired from Nanortalik Tourism, which has both great experience and expertise.

Sail out to uninhabited islands, pitch your tent and sleep in the great outdoors. There are plenty of options – and the choice is yours. You can also go on package tours which take you to specially chosen areas of historical and local cultural interest.

Climbing and mountaineering

Some of the world’s most challenging rock faces that attract climbers from all over the world are found in Tasermiut fjord. Each year climbers and expeditions come to Greenland to take on the challenge, including the challenge of Ketil – at 1,800 metres, the world’s highest rock face.

In addition, there are unique climbing possibilities in almost all the fjords south of Nanortalik near the unspoilt Cape Farewell. Nanortalik Tourism helps provide transport to and from the sites, and has many years of experience of logistics and technical guidance in connection with expeditions in the mountains.

These activities are for very experienced climbers and mountaineers only.

If not in Greenland, then where else? The kayak was invented in Greenland, and in South Greenland the fjord system is perfect for kayaking. Many kayak expeditions begin in Nanortalik, and at Nanortalik Tourism you can hire an extensive range of items, including tents, kayaks and equipment.

Paddle out and explore the area with views of the icebergs and kilometre-high rock faces. Head out to uninhabited islands, pitch your tent and sleep in the great outdoors – the possibilities are endless and the choice is yours.

However, be aware of the capricious weather which can change in an instant. Experience of kayaking is necessary – on the other hand, however, you can be sure of kayaking trips that are unlike anywhere else.

We also organise guided kayaking trips in collaboration with the Scottish kayaking and mountain centre Glenmore Lodge and Norwegian Northern Exposure to the areas around Cape Farewell.

Inuit culture

Get close to the fabled Inuit culture, which today still makes its mark on modern Greenlandic towns and society as a whole. The most well-known examples are probably the small tupilaks, which today are popular souvenirs, but which in former times were used to contact the spirits.

Explore the remnants of the old settlements, the oldest buildings in Nanortalik town and much more. Head out to the “board” and see the choice of food and how the day’s catch is sold.

Nanortalik Tourism customises trips and package tours which provide an insight into culture and local history.

History of the Norse settlers

Get close to the history of the Vikings – or the Norse settlers, who, led by Erik the Red, made landfall on the coasts of southern Greenland more than one thousand years ago. Explore the remnants of the old settlements, study the stone ruins and hear how the Norse settlers lived.

Nanortalik Tourism’s excursions and package tours are tailor-made to give you an insight into local and cultural history.

Nanortalik Museum has a unique exhibition of the Norse settlers, including the famous clothing from Herjolfsnæs. A visit to the local museum also provides an understanding of the life of the Norse settlers and their activities in South Greenland.

Guided sightseeing

Accompany a local guide on a sightseeing trip lasting 2-3 hours. Here you’ll be shown the most important and most interesting areas of the town; the busy harbour, shops and historical sites.

There are also guided hikes to the places where Nanortalik was founded in 1797, and to the summits of Ravnefjeldet (308 m) and Storfjeldet (559 m).

If you’re prepared to allocate a little more time, the tour can be enhanced with a kaffemik or traditional dinner at the home of a local Greenlandic family. This will enable you to taste boiled whale meat and hear more about everyday life both in former times and today.

Alternatively, you can pick up a detailed map of the town at Nanortalik Tourism’s office and explore the town and its attractions on your own.

Close to the local population

Does boiled whale meat, seal suaasa, dried meat and fish and blubber prepared in traditional South Greenlandic style sound enticing? Dinner at home with a Greenlandic family, where you also have the chance to taste local dishes, is an experience that’s quite out of the ordinary – also for your taste buds.

Nanortalik Tourism also organises kaffemiks. Listen to stories from the local area and about everyday life both in former times and today in Greenland’s southernmost town.

Kaffemiks and dinner are typically organised in conjunction with a guided sightseeing tour of the town. The details are planned with you to take into account your preferences.

Souvenir shopping

In the tourist office shop you can find a wide range of souvenirs. Perhaps you’ll find tupilaks, sealskin products and other handicrafts which will act as mementos of your trip to Greenland.

We are authorised dealers of Great Greenland’s famous furs and other sealskin products. The most popular items are probably the peculiar little tupilaks, which were originally used to establish contact with both good and evil spirits.

Nanortalik Tourism’s shop also has books, music, postcards and equipment for hiking in the fells.

Nanortalik Tourism has put together a number of daytrips and package tours that take place on the water and take you to exciting areas both in terms of nature and cultural and local history.

Go on a trip to hot springs where you can relax in 37-38-degree hot water. Or head for the Ice Sheet or Tasermiut Fjord, which is regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful spots. The various trips last from a couple of hours to several days.

Visit our website and find the trip that suits you best.

The countless different shapes and forms of icebergs can be found throughout Greenland’s waters. This is also true of South Greenland, although the icebergs are generally a little smaller than those further north. It’s not unusual to see icebergs form beautiful gateways, which are tempting to sail right through.

It’s no surprise that the icebergs are one of Greenland’s most popular attractions. On trips in the Nanortalik area you can get close to the icebergs on foot, in a kayak or by boat.

Nanortalik Tourism has a large variety of customised trips which include encounters with icebergs. A full range of equipment, tents, kayaks and hiking equipment can be hired at Nanortalik Tourism, which also provides expert advice.

Icebergs and the Ice Sheet are characteristic of Greenland – indeed, they’re almost synonymous with the country which is almost 85% covered by thick ice.

The Ice Sheet is a cap of incredible dimensions which at first appears stiff and unyielding, but its rumbling and creaking reveal its changeable and dynamic nature.

On Nanortalik Tourism’s tours you can experience the Ice Sheet from several perspectives: from a kayak, on hikes, on fishing trips, etc. A full range of equipment, tents, kayaks and hiking equipment can be hired at Nanortalik Tourism, which also provides expert advice.

Hot springs

A popular excursion is to the hot springs that are found on the small uninhabited island of Uunartoq between Alluitsup Paa and Nanortalik. Here there are three naturally heated springs that flow together into a small, dammed pool.

For once, you don’t need warm clothes and sealskin gloves; a bathing costume will suffice, with the water at 37-38 degrees Celsius. Hire a kayak or other equipment from Nanortalik Tourism, head out on your own or go on a guided tour.

In any event it’s quite an experience after a tiring trip by kayak to relax in 38-degree hot water and enjoy the sight of icebergs drifting slowly by.

River fishing

The chances of catching large trout or salmon are excellent, so be prepared for delicious, nutritious meals. The char is fished in both saltwater and in rivers. It is typically fished at the mouths of rivers or at the boundary between a lake and river.

Generally speaking, char are found where the concentration of food is greatest, the water is deep enough to cover their dorsal fins and where the water is relatively still.

You can be sure of expert guidance at Nanortalik Tourism. They know the good fishing spots and can help with maps, fishing licences, equipment and kit. A full range of equipment, tents, kayaks and hiking equipment can be hired at Nanortalik Tourism.
