A Mekong Delta Day Tour From Saigon + Travel Tips

Mekong Delta Saigon

This post may contain affiliate links to things like tours, hotels, Amazon associates and products. These help me earn a small commission at no additional charge to you.

My recent Mekong Delta day tour from Saigon reminded me how special the Mekong region is. Green, glorious riverbanks groan under the weight of palm trees, while floating villages and markets emphasize how nature and humans can work together. The humming, humid world below the palm tree canopy reminded me of my last visit, three years ago. Then, I’d just escaped the 9-5 (pfft, 9-9 thanks to travel saving) and was on my first solo adventure, rapidly ticking off places on my Southeast Asia bucket list .

I spent three days in the Mekong Delta region while spending 3 months in Southeast Asia as I travelled on a budget tour that took me from Ho Chi Minh to Cambodia and only cost £30 for the entire time’s accommodation, food, transport and activities. I believe prices have increased now but it’s still a viable option with regular Mekong delta tours from Saigon to Phnom Penh, Cambodia .

mekong delta day trip saigon

Fast forward three years and I jumped at the chance to return during a Mekong Delta day trip from Saigon, also known as Ho Chi Minh. After a 9am pick-up, we ditched the concrete jungle and  replaced sights of swerving scooters with meandering riverboats.

Mekong Delta day tours from Saigon

It’s easy to take a Mekong Delta day trip from Saigon as several companies run tours daily, picking you up in the morning and returning to the city by later afternoon. Depending on your Saigon itinerary , you can take a full day excursion to the Mekong Delta or a half-day trip combining a Chu Chi Tunnels tour in the same day.

Leaving Ho Chi Minh

Our tour guide kept us entertained on the 2-hour journey by telling us local facts and explaining a little about the Vietnamese language. He told us that there are six tones of Vietnamese meaning a single word can have six meanings depending on the accent. Indeed, the word ‘ma’ can apparently either mean mother, ghost, rice, guilt or horse depending on the way you pronounce it. As you can imagine, when texting became a thing this caused all kinds of misunderstandings, like people asking for newspapers and getting condoms. Carnage!

Arriving in My Tho & visiting a temple

Ben Tho temple

Our minibus pulled into My Tho town where we hopped out to explore Vĩnh Tràng Temple . I was expecting it to be one I remembered from last time but it turned out to be a totally different place I’d never been before. It was stunning with an ornate design that looked more like a palace, and some enormous Buddha statues. Half an hour there was plenty of time for the others, but time’s always tight for Where Goes Rose when she’s setting up self-timers and finding things to balance her camera on! Still, I made it back to the bus in time even if I was a little sweaty (in Vietnam this is a common occurrence!).

Ben Tho mekong day tour

Boarding our boat & sampling honey tea

From My Tho jetty we climbed aboard a narrowboat which was to be our mode of transport for much of the day. To reach the shady, narrow waterways that the Mekong Delta is famed for, we first had to travel down the enlarged main river. Our first port of call was a honey factory where some members of the group held a rack of sleepy bees, and we all sampled sweet honey tea. The Mekong region is full of flora and fauna, and many local businesses work closely in conjunction with the natural environment. Honey tea was really tasty, though as usual in Vietnam I had a sneaking suspicion my daily sugar intake was going to be off the scale. Luckily we had a more natural sugar break scheduled and stopped for some popular  Asian fruits . Jackfruit is my favourite, and dragon fruit is pretty yum, too.

Coconut candy and rice wine

Afterwards, we headed to a coconut candy production centre where our guide showed us how to husk coconuts. The process involves a dangerous dance with a sharp spike (note to self: never do this at home!) which apparently experts do up to 1,000 times a day. I think I’d prefer to eat 1,000 pieces of coconut candy which I remembered from my last trip. So gooey and addictive!

Less tasty was the shot of rice wine we were invited to try after. Named after two things I enjoy, there’s absolutely nothing I like about rice wine!

Lunch stop

We hopped on the back of an enlarged tuk-tuk for the highlight of our Mekong Delta day trip… lunch! A woman next to me mused she was already full from the snacks, to which I made a noise of agreement then devoured enough food to end a nationwide famine. Seriously, it was so good especially the sticky ginger chicken. Dessert was watermelon and a giant ball of sticky rice paper. It sounds weird but tasted divine!

The highlight – a Mekong Delta canoe ride!

This was by far the part of the day I was most excited about, and I rushed to get the front seat. While the island where we’d eaten lunch had been busy, the waterways were so peaceful. Our boat glided through so silently that I felt guilty about the clicking sound of my camera!

boat ride

Sadly, our Mekong Delta day trip was nearly over and we boarded our big boat again – just in time as the heavens were about to open. We wore plastic raincoats and sipped from coconuts on the way back to the mainland. From there, it was back on the minibus and home to Ho Chi Minh.   What a cool day – the Mekong hasn’t changed one bit since my last trip! Book your Mekong day tour:

MEKONG DELTA DAY TRIP

Vietnam quick links Getting around by air – it’s easy to get between cities by flight. I use Skyscanner to find the best-value flights, using the ‘search by month’ tool to find the cheapest dates. You can also use the ‘to anywhere’ feature if you’re flexible on where you’re going. Stay connected with E-sim data plans that don’t require delivery or collection; just span the QR code. In my opinion, Lonely Planet offer the best guidebooks. Get the latest Lonely Planet Vietnam . For Vietnam buses and trains , I use 12GoAsia . The search feature allows you to compare prices and durations. I use Booking.com for accommodation. They have the best range of hotels and self-catering apartments, plus you can filter by review score and price to find the best-rated budget places. For hostels, I use Hostelworld . To save money on accommodation, I use Trusted Housesitters , a website that connects homeowners going away and travellers who can sit their homes & pets. For activities, I use GetYourGuide as they have a huge range of affordable tours. Need travel insurance ? I use True Traveller (for UK & Europe residents) since it’s affordable but covers everything you’d need including various activities, valuables and pre-existing conditions. Unlike some companies, they insure you if you’re already travelling / don’t yet have your flight home booked. Get a quote . For travel insurance for other nationalities, I recommend Hey Mundo and for long-term digital nomad travellers, I suggest Safety Wing . I think you probably meant “tones” – instead of “tongues”, as in Chinese Mandarin has 4/5 tones, Cantonese has up to 9 tones, and the list goes on with those that are called “tonal languages” (which also makes them a lot harder to learn and practice).

This being said I loved your article and it’s been a great help for my 4 days trip to Saigon so thank you Rose!

Hey Sebastien, thanks for explaining that. I’m always learning so much travelling, it’s hard to keep track of everything! So glad the article has helped and I hope you enjoy Vietnam!

Saigon, Vietnam

Dubbed as the Pearl of the Orient, Ho Chi Minh City, or more popularly called by its former name Saigon, is not only Vietnam’s biggest center of economy, education, science, and technology, but also one of the best tourist destinations that keeps the country’s ancient culture and traditions alive in every corner. Located in southeastern Vietnam, this populous metropolis covers a large area of about 2,061 square kilometres (796 square miles) and surrounds the Saigon River, making it a bustling commercial and passenger port, typically for Mekong River Cruises. Most cruises, from deluxe to luxury vessels, from private to multi-cabin ships, occupy the city as an important port of call in the cruising route among various destinations in Southern Vietnam and Cambodia, including Cai Be, Can Tho, the Mekong Delta, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Visitors can choose to either enjoy a sightseeing day trip in Saigon or expand to a multi-day tour around the city’s famous neighborhoods, both are great ideas. As Vietnam’s second most visited city, Saigon boasts a multitude of timeless tourist attractions and captivating travel experiences that cater to every visitor’s desire. If you are history buffs, a variety of historical spots related to periods of French colonization and the Vietnam War will surely make you fancy when in the city. Among the most popular sites are the Reunification Palace, Municipal Theatre (also known as the Opera House), City Post Office, and City Hall, mainly situated in District 1 within a short distance from each other. While the Reunification Palace is a must-visit place for those wanting to see how the formerly South Vietnam's Presidential Palace looks like, the Saigon Central Post Office is an excellent example of the French colonial style constructed at the end of 19th century by the famous French architect Gustave Eiffel. Not far from this prominent feature lies one of the symbolic landmarks of Saigon, the Notre Dame Cathedral. Built between 1863 and 1880, this magnificent structure is best known for its neo-Romanesque style architecture, which attracts large numbers of tourists to visit and makes it an unbeatable photogenic attraction in the city center. Another option to satisfy your curiousness is various museums scattered throughout the area, including the Ho Chi Minh City Museum, the War Remnants Museum, Revolutionary Museum, Museum of Vietnamese History, and the Museum of south-eastern Armed Forces. For visitors who want to avoid the crowds of tourists in the busy center, the impressive Cu Chi tunnels in north-west of the city makes for a perfect day tour with plenty of outside activities like crawling through the narrow routes of the underground tunnel or experience a shooting range. At the first sight, Saigon delivers an impression of a vibrant and dynamic megacity, yet a whirlwind exploration will give you an insightful glimpse on the city’s intriguing mixture of modern and traditional elements that co-exists in an incredible harmony. It’s very easy to encounter some faded, ancient colonial buildings juxtaposed with modern skyscrapers. Any visitors to Ho Chi Minh City are recommended to pay a visit to numerous Chinese style pagodas and cultural spots, such as Thien Hau Pagoda - a place dedicated to Lady Thien Hau, the sea goddess, the enchanting China Town or Ben Thanh Market - one of the most recognizable images of the city as well as an ideal place to witness the local life. Last but not less, for those traveling with family, Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Dam Sen Tourist and Cultural Park, Suoi Tien Amusement and Culture Park, and Can Gio Mangrove Reserve are unrivaled options for fun-filled day trips with kids. For backpacking travelers, the "Backpackers’ Quarter" on Pham Ngu Lao Street and Bui Vien Street in District 1 are busy every night with a series of local and western bars and cafes. Meanwhile, foodies can easily sample a ton of delicacies from Vietnamese regional specialties to international cuisine inside a marketplace, on street’s sidewalk around open-air kitchens or hidden alleys’ eateries.

As the boats are small, the ships are able to enter smaller parts of the river and enter into places that other ships can't

As the ship are small, they are able to navigate right through the Gao canal and dock at Saigon port, other ships are too big and they stop at My Tho and the passengers need to take a bus to Saigon

The same for Siem Reap, during high water the ship is able to dock at Siem Reap port

1. 4 Reasons You Must Visit the Mekong Delta in Vietnam

A floating market.

The Mekong Delta is the only area in Vietnam where you can visit a floating market. Crisscrossed by rivers and rivulets, some villages are often more accessible by waterways than by road. This has nurtured the floating market culture. Unlike the floating markets in Thailand, the floating markets in the Mekong Delta, such as Cai Rang Floating Market, are still the main way for local people to trade. Although you will still see travelers there, it is a good chance to be like a local villager, buying a simple breakfast (pho) in a breakfast boat and tasting this famous Vietnamese delicacy while the beef in the soup is still hot. Trying to bargain when buying fruit is another highlight.

Remember to get up early as the best time to enjoy the floating market is from 4 to 7am. Fewer trading boats will be seen after 8am.

Learn about the History and Culture of the Vietnamese Minority People

As the home of ethnic minority people (predominantly the Viet people who comprise the largest population of Khmers outside Cambodia, the Muslim Cham, and the ethnic Chinese Hoa), diversity in the Mekong Delta has melded into a harmonious society which is just too beautiful to be overlooked.

A short candy-making class is a great choice of activity to help you blend in with the culture of the locals, while earning the skill of how to make a tropical sweet.

Enjoy the Countryside Scenery by Escaping the Hustle and Bustle of Ho Chi Minh City

Just 2–3 hours away from Ho Chi Minh City by car, you will discover a totally different vibe. Numerous rivers, canals, orchards, rice fields, boats, and floating houses will lead you to see the authentic village life of South Vietnam. You can feel this rice bowl's past and present in person.

Visit the Tropical Fruit Orchards in Villages

In the Mekong Delta, hectares of fertile soil are vastly cultivated, creating – beside being Vietnam's rice bowl – a huge and famous fruit garden with various tropical fruits such as rambutans, durians, jackfruits, mangosteens.

With its pleasant tropical climate and nature, the fruit season seems endless and the vegetation always green. Broaden your knowledge about exotic fruit and learn how to pick it by accompanying a local farmer in the tropical fruit garden.

Some of the famous fruit orchards are Cai Be Orchard; Tien Giang, Phong Dien, and My Khanh Orchard; Can Tho, Cai Mon Orchard; Ben Tre. By visiting a fruit garden, you enrich your local experience while directly supporting the local economy.

2. Top 5 Destinations to Visit in the Mekong Delta

Visiting the Mekong Delta can be a challenge when it comes to the details of where to go, what to do, when to visit, and so on. Prepare for the journey and pack lightly for the following cities, which are the Mekong Delta's main cities with suitable facilities for travelers.

Can Tho is about 3 hours away from Ho Chi Minh City by car. It is also the best place to stay overnight for a morning visit to Cai Rang Floating Market (30 minutes by boat).

Can Tho is the Mekong Delta's main city and transportation center, where the Mekong River meets the South China Sea. You can wake up early in the morning, roam around on foot or rent a bike, or take a ride in a sampan at a floating market.

Can Tho will be the best choice if you're planning an extension for 1 or 2 nights from Ho Chi Minh City.

My Tho is commonly visited by travelers for a 1-day Mekong Delta tour from Ho Chi Minh City as it is only 2 hours away by car. It is renowned for its boat trips in the Mekong Delta region. It is also known for its special soup, hu tieu My Tho.

The floating market works only in early morning, thus this will be missed if you take 1 day tour from Ho Chi Minh.

A similar distance from Ho Chi Minh City as My Tho, Ben Tre is an industrious city with friendly and warm inhabitants. It is relatively laid-back and quiet compared to other cities and is a place where you can comfortably wander around and witness the daily lives of the local people.

Travelers who choose to take a boat trip from Vietnam to Cambodia will choose this destination. Board the boat there and you will reach Phnom Penh in Cambodia in about 5 hours. In this city, you can find inner peace and listen to the soothing water flow at Tra Su Bird Sanctuary.

Read more about three ways to get from Vietnam to Cambodia .

It is a river port and center of agriculture and trade. It is one of largest cities in the Mekong Delta.

3. Getting To and Around the Mekong Delta

Boating, mostly by bamboo raft or motorboat, is the main form of transportation in the Mekong Delta. To get there, you will first need to take a private car or bus from Ho Chi Minh City to one of the port cities that service it, namely Cai Be or Can Tho.

As the fourth largest city in Vietnam, Can Tho has its only airport with direct flights to Hanoi and Da Nang.

Read more information about transport to and around the Mekong Delta .

4. Food and Drink in the Mekong Delta

Although it's named the 'rice bowl' of Vietnam, rice is not the only delicacy in the Mekong Delta. You will get to taste local dishes that originated in or have been popularized by the Mekong Delta region.

5. Where to Stay in the Mekong Delta

If a floating market doesn't appeal to you, you can stay overnight in Ho Chi Minh City. Would you like to try some special accommodation? No problem — why not rent a private boutique boat or try a homestay? Contact us to arrange it for you.

To enjoy an early morning floating market, an overnight stay in one of the port cities is necessary. We highly recommend Can Tho as it is nearest to the biggest floating market, Cai Rang Floating Market, with a journey of just 30 minutes by boat. Also, being the fourth largest city in Vietnam, it provides accommodation that ranges from hostels to luxury 5-star options.

6. A Brief History about Mekong Delta

Though currently a part of Vietnam and inhabited by people who are predominantly ethnically Vietnamese, the Mekong Delta has experienced a number of changes throughout its history.

The Delta is thought to be the ancient capital of the Funan Empire – a multi-ethnic empire that dominated the area from the first to the sixth centuries. After the fall of the Funan Empire the area was much influenced by the Chinese and Khmer Empires.

In Cambodia, the Mekong region is still known as Lower Khmer due to its long occupation by the Khmer people. In 1979 the Vietnamese army invaded Cambodia to stop attacks on Vietnamese villages and ultimately the Mekong Delta became Vietnamese territory.

Today, there are still sites where ruins of these ancient empires can be observed at Oc Eo and other similar locations.

Mekong River Cruise

Our family including 4 and 8 year old children absolutely loved our journey along the Mekong River. Hong was so helpful and thorough working out our requirements and making sure everything was to our satisfaction. I sent numerous requests and questions, and Hong patiently and efficiently handled them all. The river cruise was wonderful, and exceeded our expectations. We were a little worried about the safety of the 4yo on board the boat, but the staff were fantastic and the other passengers were very kind to both children. I thoroughly recommend this company to ensure a fantastic and memorable Mekong River cruise Valerie Vermaas - Australia

How safe is Vietnam?

iVietnam is a relatively safe country to visit but there are increasing instances of theft, especially in HCMC where pickpockets and snatch thieves on motorbikes are the worst menace. The best tip is to be vigilant at all times. Often cute kids or old grannies have deft fingers. Leave all valuables (expensive watches, jewellery, glasses, etc.) at home, and don’t even wear flash costume jewellery. Make sure you have a firm grip on cameras and shoulder bags at all times and never leave anything you value lying around unattended. I would also not advise taking cyclos late at night, especially in HCMC. our guides will advise you what is “do and don’t” case by case.

What about medical insurance?

It is advised that travelers should have some form of medical insurance before arriving in Vietnam. Although there are several international medical clinics in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, generally the country still lacks adequate medical care for serious illnesses and injuries, especially in other areas. Therefore, we advise that travelers have sufficient cover for emergency medical care as a precautionary measure. Should I take my money in cash or travellers’cheques? The official currency of Vietnam is the dong, which can not be purchased outside Vietnam. The main banks in Hanoi and HCMC can handle a fairly broad range of currencies nowadays, but the dollar is still the most widely accepted. I therefore recommend taking a combination of US$ cash and US$ travellers’ cheques, with the bulk in travellers’ cheques for safety. American Express, Visa and Thomas Cook cheques are the most recognised brands.

Saigon cyclo tour.

Today I did the Saigon Cyclo tour with the Saigon Adventure people. My guide was Daisy. She was soo sweet, friendly and nice to me. She told me alllllll about the different places. She knew her stuff and her English was so good, it gave her a big plus to understand the history and Culture of the Vietnamese. Highly recommended. Going through the city in the cycle is a bit of an experience, I could say. But it was so much fun and hey, I made it back in one piece!! Daisy was great. And the man riding the cyclo was cool too!!

Sightseeing Ho Chi Minh by Scooter with Saigon Adventure Tours

When I planned my trip to Vietnam I wanted to give my teenage kids a fun adventure filled with thrills with their mum. Well we did it all! Totally loved Vietnam! Ho Chi Minh was amazing and finding Saigon Adventure Tours was our luck. They were very professional and all my emails and questions were answered very quickly by the delightful Lieu .I was very excited but bit apprehensive about my decision to go by scooter because of my kids when I saw the traffic, but we were lead by a great guide Sony and his lovely colleagues Kris, Nhat, Nu and Racheal. They handled the roads very professionally and I felt totally at ease after 2 minutes sitting on the back. Like I'd been doing this all my life!

We also took Saigon Adventure Tours to Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta and had a great day with their tour guide Ryan. I highly recommend this company. They were all extremely sweet and fun tour guides who gave us great memories to go home with.

Cuchi tunnel/Mekong delta and HCM Wight seeing: Super tours

We (my wife, I and 3 kids 14, 12 and 10 yrs old) did two tours with Saigon tours and both of them were great.

The first one was a combined Cu Chi tunnel / Mekong delta Visit ( My Tho) taking a full day; pick up at 7:30am and back in the hotel 6:00 pm. The tour was guided by Daisy and Ryan, both being extremely friendly and nice young students, They are ambitious and enthusiastic young people which is really heart warming to experience. To visit both Cu Chi and Mekong in one day we felt, worked out well for us. We spent like 2 hours in Cu Chi and something like that in Mekong delta too. Although it means you cannot “take all the time of the world”, it was good enough for us. The place where we had lunch was great, beautiful garden and delicious food.

Second tour was a city sight tour on the back seat of a scooter, taking half a day, pick-up at 1:00pm and back in the hotel 6:00pm. This was super fun and although we were a little nervous before because of the hectic traffic in HCM, we felt 100% safe during the whole trip. Our guide and scooter drivers (Sophie, Kris, Thuyen, Chong and Trung) again were really lovely and super nice young people. All students and ambitious and they were really eager to provide us good fun and a great experience. our kids loved them! The tour was also nice. Taking part of the hectic traffic on the backseat of a scooter is an experience on itself. Besides that it was an excellent way to get to know HCM a little bit and get an idea of where the nice spots are. All together our conclusions is that Saigon Adventure provides great tours and can be proud to have young people as guides as we were lucky enough to have on our tours.

Fantastic Waterbus Tour

For the last day of our Vietnam vacation we booked a private motorcycle tour - a combination of Saigon unseen and Saigon countryside. Sony was a very knowledgeable tour guide and the girls were absolutely awesome and safe drivers. All spoke very good English and we had so much fun with them. We enjoyed the motorcycle ride in the (for us) very busy, crazy traffic very much and this tour made our trip in Vietnam unforgettable. We would definitely recommend Saigon Adventures and their guides if you want to make memorable tours around Saigon!

CU CHI TUNNELS TOUR BY SCOOTER

I was a young man during the 1960's in Australia so I was very interested in learning more about the war in Vietnam from a local perspective. So I booked the Cu Chi Tunnels tour with Saigon Adventures and my personal guide Michael (Minh Kha Tran) took me on an amazing 70km ride through the streets of HCMC and countryside to the tunnels. I felt safe and relaxed in Michael's company, he was very obliging and I learnt so much about the war, the history and culture of Vietnam and its people. The tunnel system and the resourcefulness of the people who built and occupied them was so fascinating. I would recommend this tour with this company and especially with Michael to anyone visiting incredible HCM.

VEGAN FOOD BY SCOOTER

I usually explore on my own but here I decided to try out a tour. And I loved it. I picked vegetarian food tour since I’m often not able to try street local food because all is cooked with meat, so I was curious to explore Vietnamese cousine for me. And I did :) the food was amazing, and exploring the city on a scooter was a cherry on top. Sony, my guide, was knowledgeable and happy to answer my curious questions. We ended up talking about much more than the food and city. So at the end I also New a lot about the life and culture here. I was sad that the tour then ended, although I was so full I couldn’t eat any more I can recommend any of their tours, really great especially for solo travellers.

Know Saigon better when u are on scooter (FOODS & SIGHTS)

I don’t expect so much things on this tour. When I see a small girl, named Michelle with a scooter, I felt excited! I was not sure that she can ride a scooter smoothly.

I was wrong, she did a great jobs!. I had a fun day with her. She took me to many places and local food shops. The food was very nice! Bun Bo Bun Xiao are great. She took me to the old apartment to see a real life of local people. I see Vietnamese in different way, they live together (3 generations),in a small room. OMG!

Thank you to Michelle, she is only 20 but very fantastic! Hope I meet u again in Saigon !

Saigon After Dark by scooter

I took this tour with Peter on my last day in Vietnam and it was the perfect end to my 10 day trip. Peter is such a friendly and accommodating guy, we became best buddies the moment we met. He is a true local who knows all the best places in town and surely knows how to keep you entertained. I was quite tired after a long day tour and was looking for a relaxing city tour where I can enjoy the sights and sound of this sprawling city in a most authentic yet relaxing way. Peter first took me to Chill Sky bar where we enjoyed the drinks overlooking the city skyline. He then took me to various districts of the city stopping along the way for delicious local food :) He even took me to the desert shop only locals knew about (there was no tourists around). A big thank you to Saigon adventures for arranging such a great city tour and giving me a friend for life.

Street food tour with Saigon Adventure

We are so glad that we chose to do a food tour with Saigon Adventure! It was brilliant! So much fun! The food was really tasty and it was great to ride on the back of scooters (we were very apprehensive about going on a scooter, but so glad we did it!) .The tour guides were fantastic, Michelle who did our tour was amazing, we were really impressed! We felt at ease straight away going on the back of the scooters. During the tour itself, we were treated some amazing food from all over the city, getting away from the main tourist area and into some of the best street food locations that local people enjoy. If you want to experience a variety of street food, don't think you can do much better than go on one of these tours.

If like us, you are not sure about going on the back of a scooter. I would definitely recommend you do it! Thanks again to Saigon Adventure and Michelle & Huy

Vegan food tour with Kat and Sophie

We were picked up from our hotel by Kat and Sophie who explained the plan of the tour and checked that we were comfortable on scooters. We went around the city to different districts trying vegan foods. The girls were very knowledgeable about the food telling us about the ingredients and how to eat them. They constantly checked what we could and couldn't eat and made sure we had options to choose from. They were helpful in teaching us phrases to help us get vegetarian food for the remainder of our trip in Vietnam. They were really enthusiastic and fun to be around. We really enjoyed our trip and would advise anyone to join this tour. At the end Kat surprised us with two flowers that she had sneakily purchased when we were at the flower market.

The best choice to visit Cu Chi Tunnel!

Me and my boyfriend had a private tour to Cu Chi Tunnel with this company. Everything was really well-organized. We had Henry as a guide and he was simply wonderful with us. He explained us everything about the tunnels and the war, he offered to make pictures of us and answered all our questions. This was one of the most beautiful experience we had in Vietnam and we thank very much Henry for making it so special!

Food Safari

We really enjoyed our food safari with Kathy on our first night in Saigon. this was a walking tour that took us through a number of different districts we were able to see how the locals live as well as try 20 different dishes throughout the course of the evening, most of which were new to us.......we were stuffed!! it was a great intro to the city learning how to navigate the streets and cross the roads confidently whilst being able to experience many sights, smells and tastes. I would highly reccomend this tour, it was very enjoyable and tasty.

Cruising in Cambodia and Vietnam on a river cruise

A joint effort to untangle fishing nets in readiness for casting further upstream. Photo / Getty Images

If you want to find Cambodia and Vietnam’s actual hidden gems; places where few other tourists have trampled, it’s still possible with a river cruise, writes Nannette Holliday

A long wooden fishing boat putts past, stirring up the already murky Tonlé Sap River water. Sitting in the middle, a child and woman diligently untangle fishing nets in readiness for casting further upstream. The golden sunrise highlights a row of wooden stilt houses standing guard like soldiers on the steep riverbank opposite. The people of Koh Chen are going about their daily chores, oblivious to my intrusion.

READ MORE: Be one of the first to experience Vietnam’s only luxury train journey

Working riverboats in Koh Chen. Photo / Nannette Holliday

I’m lying in my cosy bed, peeking out the large window of my air-conditioned en suite cabin aboard RV Toum Tiou II (TT2), a cute 14-cabin teak and steel-hulled river cruiser. TT2 oozes intimate luxury and old-world charm. My every need is met with a restaurant, bar, and sundeck staffed by friendly Cambodians.

TT2 is the second smallest of the five CF Mekong/Croisi Europe ships that have navigated these waterways since 2002. I’m on their nine-day New Discovery Cruise from Siem Reap, Cambodia, to Saigon, Vietnam.

Meandering upstream towards Kampong Chhnang, the river is a hive of activity, but in a peaceful, non-urgent way. Barges ferry cars, bikes, and people from shore to shore, and hubs of fishing boats dot the shorelines. TT2 sounds its horn only occasionally to warn them to protect their nets as we pass.

These Cambodians remain unfazed by our presence. We’re travelling the less tourist route. Even when we disembark at Kampong Chhnang fishing port, there are no hawkers selling their wares.

Cultural Cambodia

Each daily off-ship activity is included and diverse, offering additional insights into the cultural traditions of the regions we travel through.

Some guests bike 4km through the lush rice fields at Kampong Chhnang. Others relax in an air-conditioned minivan to Andong Reusey Community Village, where artisans work from their homes with unwavering passion.

We watch in amazement as Sophat, a 10th-generation potter, walks around a solid tree stump, patting the clay with her hands and a paddle, miraculously crafting a perfect pot. She’s never used an electric or foot-peddled pottery wheel.

Like an agile monkey, 72-year-old Mr Ry swings between sugar palm trees collecting juice to make palm wine and palm sugar. His 73-year-old wife stirs the palm juice over a large pot on an outdoor fire, turning it into palm sugar, which they sell for US$1.75 (approx. $3) a kilo.

Kampong Chhnang's artisans, including a 10th-generation potter, showcase their crafts without modern machinery. Photo / 123rf

At Kampong Tralach, I ride on an ox cart tray reserved for transporting goods, plodding past pea-green rice fields to Pothi Rokha Ram Pagoda, the oldest in Kampong Chhnang province. Sitting cross-legged, surrounded by deteriorating 18th-century murals painted by Pal and Chea, I listen to an orange-robed monk explain his life before he blesses me.

Mr Ry, 72, toasting his palm wine with the tour guide.

While at Vipassana Dhura Buddhist Meditation Centre in Oudong, Cambodia’s former capital, we talk casually with a nun. It’s inspirational and humbling to learn about her life and what meditation means to her as she washes plates in a plastic bowl under her home at the centre.

The journey offers an array of off-ship activities, including biking through rice fields, ox cart rides, and interactions with monks and artisans. Photo / Nannette Holliday

Tours at Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City cover all the big-ticket palaces, museums, historical sites, entry fees, and some local cafes and restaurants. An English-speaking guide adds local anecdotes to his history repertoire as we comfortably travel by air-conditioned bus amid the city’s hustle and bustle.

Culinary concoctions

Asian cuisine can be equally memorable, especially in various markets. At Oudong, the eye-opening contents include snakeheads, stuffed frogs, and red ants with bananas. Fried crickets and tarantulas dominate Phnom Penh’s huge domed Central Markets, and exotic black eggs, duck embryos, and fried rats lay between traditional Vietnamese foods and tropical fruits at Sa Dec Markets. The intermingled smells of raw meat, seafood, mystery organs, slippery creatures, and ripe fruits are another world.

With all meals included and TT2′s chef preparing bountiful Asian and Western meals from buffet breakfasts to copious three-course lunches, lavish five-course dinners, and even individually chef-cooked offerings, we’re never hungry, and there’s no need to experiment unless these unusual foods are on your wish list.

Visiting Vietnam

Gliding across the border into Vietnam at Vinh Xuong, there’s an eerie shift. The peaceful little Cambodian fishing boats are replaced by massive barges piled high with gravel and export goods, sharing our cruising space on the way to Saigon. Life is hectic. Large factories loom menacingly on one side, juxtaposing intermittent rice fields, fruit plantations, and uncaring cattle on the other.

Three hours later, Chau Doc was a breath of fresh air. A kaleidoscopic border town where Khmer, Chinese , Cham, and Kinh (Vietnamese) communities thrive. It’s as colourful as the floating fishing farms dotting the Hau River’s shores, 250km west of Ho Chi Minh City.

We ride the cable car up sacred Sam Mountain, dotted with pagodas, temples, and caves. At the top, vivid patchwork farm countryside and Vinh Te Canal stretch to the border. In town, thick incense fills the air at Mieu Ba Chua Xu Pagoda. We’re shoulder-to-shoulder with locals praying before the sacred Lady Chau statue, placing baskets of fruit, flowers, and whole pig offerings beside it.

An hour from town at Tra Su Cajuput Forest, a two-person rowboat meanders through waterways, floating over carpets of waterlilies and under towering paperbark trees. This vast natural wetland is home to various birds and animals. A long motorboat then zips to the other end of the forest, delivering us to an observation tower. The panoramic, majestic views of the biodiverse ecosystem are serene. In the hazy distance, I spy Sam Mountain.

Mekong Delta magic

Further into the Mekong Delta estuaries, the hectic Sa Dec riverside markets overflow with people and produce. A short stroll away, we enjoy traditional tea and glazed ginger at Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House, where French author Marguerite Duras lived and set her breathtaking literary novel, The Lover . It’s a treasure trove of nostalgia, antique furniture, stained-glass windows, and painted cement tiles.

My heart sinks when the community project centre appears to be a typical tourist haunt, with souvenirs blanketing the entrance. But behind the facade, locals diligently produce various-flavoured popping corn and rice cakes, cook, wrap, and package coconut candy, bottle rice wine infused with snakes and scorpions, and craft delicate rice paper sheets for those delicious spring rolls we love.

Nearby at Cai Be, the cooking class didn’t pan out as expected. Mercifully, real chefs had prepared a beautiful feast, which was worked off afterwards by bike riding or kayaking around the tropically fruit-laden islet.

Meaning “Beautiful Reed”, My Tho is the largest city and a major port in the bountiful Mekong Delta. Day trips from Ho Chi Minh City are popular, and many buses roll in at 11am as we return to TT2. Minus these tourists, we’ve enjoyed three hours of profound local connections. Some peacefully biking, others wrapped by slithering snakes or safely gliding in sampans along scenic palm-fringed canals, witnessing fruit harvesting and glazed fruit production.

The water highway into Saigon

Over lunch and relaxing drinks, TT2 drifts along Cho Gao Canal, the entrance to Saigon. Close to the shore again, we spy into farmer’s homes, temples, and pagodas. The canal is a water highway servicing more than 2000 commercial ships and barges daily. We’re privileged, as the five CF Mekong River Cruise ships are the only cruise ships to sail this 29km canal connecting Saigon and the Mekong.

Cruising into Vietnam’s lively capital at sunset, we dock at Bach Dang. We have two more nights aboard TT2, complete with city tours, but tonight, five of us have chosen the only optional tour—a Vespa Nightlife Food Tour. The bright two-wheel vintage machines and our drivers are waiting.

The Vespa Nightlife Food Tour in Saigon is an exciting conclusion to the cruise, immersing guests in the city's vibrant food scene.

Four fabulous hours zigzagging amongst the capital’s crazy city traffic, sipping sky-high cocktails, staring at city lights, devouring Saigon’s best banh mi, and a sidewalk seafood banquet with locals, rounded off with a rich hot chocolate nightcap at Maison Marou Saigon.

On the final morning, while sipping my coffee on the peaceful sundeck, I knew the nine-day New Discovery cruise had shown me another world full of authentic activities , countless unique experiences, people interactions, and hidden gems away from the usual tourist offerings.

All restaurant meals aboard, on-land tours, English-speaking guides and Wi-Fi are included. Alcohol is not included. However, a good selection is available and reasonably priced, or you can take your own aboard, and they happily refrigerate. The cruise operates from Siem Reap to Saigon or in reverse.
