Hukou Waterfall

Hukou (mouth of teapot) Waterfall is the only yellow waterfall in the world and the second largest waterfall in China after Huangguoshu Waterfall in Anshun City, Guizhou Province.

It is a naturally formed waterfall when the mighty Yellow River, the mother river of China, flows through Jinxia Grand Canyon on its middle reaches. The width of the waterfall changes with the season, usually 30 meters (98 feet) wide but increasing to 50 meters (164 feet) during flood season.

Huhou Waterfall is located at the intersection of Shanxi Province and Shaanxi Province, 48 kilometers (30 miles) from Yichuan County of Yan’an and some 400 kilometers (249 miles) from Xi'an.

It is a great pleasure that a visitors should not miss in the Yellow River Basin. The mighty Yellow River, the second largest river in China, surges its way form the Qinghai Province to the border of Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces where it suddenly found its way through a narrow valley blocked by mountains on both sides.

The riverbed abruptly narrows down from 300 meters (984 feet) to 50 meters (164 feet), turning the placid water to rapids. The tremendous water splashes on the rock, forming a magnificent waterfall of 15 meters (49 feet) high and 20 meters (66 feet) wide, as if the water is pouring down from a huge teapot, hence the name Hukou (means mouth of teapot).

The scene can be overwhelming, water stirs up masses of smoke and clouds, with color turning from yellow to grey, grey to blue. The locals call this awesome scenery "smoke from river".

Over history, a number of prominent poets and painters once traveled here. Wowing at the grand view, they left numerous works giving high honor of the waterfall.

Visitors not only can appreciate the waterfalls and take photos, but also can take rafts to make an exploration, taste Yellow River carps and Yan’an wines. There are restaurants in the scenic area offering Chinese fast food and dishes featuring local flavors.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Hukou Waterfall are the period from April to May and the period from September to November. Hukou Waterfall is abundant and of great momentum which makes it a spectacular sight during these two periods.

Traveling here in winter may be of different interest as Hukou Waterfall becomes a huge silvery ice waterfall and little silver icicles hang on the cliffs around the waterfall.

Many buses to Hukou Waterfall are available at the bus station of Yichuan County, just about one hour drive. You also can take bus at Yan’an Long-distance Bus Station. There is just one bus a day starting at 7:30am and reaching Hukou Waterfalls at noon. There is tourist round bus from Xi’an to Hukou Waterfall which starts at 6:30 am and goes back at 3 or 4 pm.

Xian to Hukou Waterfall Day Tour Itinerary

In the morning, our tour guide will pick you up at the exit of Xi'an train station or your hotel lobby in Xi'an, you will find a welcome signage " Xi'an Private Tour ". And you will be transffered to Hukou Waterfalls directly. 

Hukou Waterfalls is the largest waterfall on the Yellow River, the second largest waterfall in China (after the Huangguoshu Waterfall), is located at the intersection of Shanxi Province. 165 km (103 mi) to the west of Fenxi City, and 50 km (31 mi) to the east of Yichuan where the middle reaches of the Yellow River flow through Jinxia Grand Canyon. The width of the waterfall changes with the season, usually 30 metres (98 ft) wide but increasing to 50 m (164 ft) during flood season. It has a height of over 20 m (66 ft).  Also regarded as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in China and the largest yellow waterfalls in the world. 

Just below the waterfall, there is a shining stone called G uishi (??). What makes the stone mysterious is that it moves up and down according to the water level. No matter how large the water volume, it is still at least partly visible.

The waterfalls's velocity increases, and then plunges over a narrow opening on a cliff on the river bed, forming a waterfall 15m high and 20m wide, as if water is pouring down from a huge teapot, hence the name Hukou (literally, the mouth of teapot) Waterfalls.

In the middle of the river, about 3,000 m (9,843 ft) from the Hukou Waterfall, an enormous rock catches the attention of visitors. When the Yellow River flows to this point, divides into two, rolling and roaring on and on from both sides of the rock before reconverging.

Beneath the waterfall is the Qilangwo Bridge which connects the two provinces of Shanxi and Shaanxi. In the sunshine, the mist is refracted by sunlight to create a rainbow spanning the water like a colorful bridge. In 1991, Hukou Waterfall was named one of the "40 Best" national scenic spots.

After the tour ends, you will be transferred to Xi'an train station or your hotel in Xi'an downtown.

It is the only magnificent yellow waterfall in the world and the second biggest waterfall in China after Huangguoshu Waterfall . Located at the intersection of the provinces of Shanxi and Shaanxi, China, the middle reaches of the Yellow River flow through Jinxia Grand Canyon.

Hukou Waterfall

The Hukou Waterfall (壶口瀑布), the largest waterfall on the Yellow River, the “second largest” waterfall in China, is located at the intersection of Shanxi Province and Shaanxi Province. Hukou Waterfalls is also known as ‘boat sailing on dry-land’.

In Hukou the water falls to the deep pond from a relatively high place, stirring the mist which rises high into the air like surging heavy smoke coming out of the river. Visitors can see various shapes of rainbows formed by the rising mist, refracted by the sunshine from different angles. Sometimes rainbows are arched, cutting into the river from the sky like a dragon playing with water; sometimes they are colored ribbons lying across the river; sometimes they become colorful masses which change second by second.

Different season Hukou Waterfall will present in different views. In spring the frozen ground thaws and the stalactites of snow fall into the pond like the mountains collapsing and the earth cracking up. In summer and autumn there is much rainfall. With the rains, the river rushes and the yellow waves seem to reach the sky. In winter, during the coldest days of the year, the magnificent Hukou Waterfalls is clad in white. The water rushes down among icicles of various sizes and shapes, stirring up masses of water fog. In the sun, the mists from the fog form beautiful rainbows, with the icicles forming what appears to be a natural ice bridge underneath.

The Hukou Waterfall is China’s second largest waterfall and a state-level natural attraction. In the year 1991 the Hukou joined the list of the “40 Best” national scenic spots in China.

Down the stream there is an odd stone – “guishi”, which moves up and down depending on the water level, at the same time, being always in the purview.

The best time to visit the waterfall is the period from April to May and from September to November. You can reach it by bus from Yinchuan and Yanani or Xian. It is better to choose morning time to visit it. The admission fee is from 37 to 91 Yuan, depending on the season. Each year, Hukou Waterfall is visited by more than 100,000 tourists from all over the world.

After a 5-6 hour drive, marvel at the distinctive landscapes of this massive plateau. Following this, visit the magnificent Hukou Waterfall , the second-largest waterfall in China, surpassed only by the Huangguoshu Waterfall in Guizhou Province. Immerse yourself in the extraordinary beauty of the Yellow River as it cascades through the stunning scenery, creating a memorable and picturesque experience on this one-day adventure.

The Yellow River bed here suddenly shrinks from some 300 meters to around 50 meters, girdling the pools of the Yellow River water into a narrow gorge and rushing abruptly down from some 30 meters high into the gorge below, with the torrential water running along a water channel of some five kilometers long to the lower reaches. The watercourse looks a lot like the mouth of a pot hence the derivation of the name “Hukou” which means “mouth of a pot”. Hukou Waterfall is majestic and surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, making it a nationally famous scenic spot. After the tour, you will be back at your Xian hotel around 9:00 pm.

How to Get to Hukou Waterfall 2024

Hukou Waterfall is a natural wonder on China's mother river - Yellow River. Known as the largest yellowish waterfall in the world and the second largest waterfall in China, it has inspired many poets and literary men as well as travelers. Many travelers regard it as a very nice supplement to their great cultural experience in Shanxi's other top destinations, like Pingyao, Datong, Mount Wutai, etc. or in Xian, Shaanxi.

Where is Hukou Waterfall

Hukou Waterfall is located on the Yellow River between Shanxi province and Shaanxi province . Two scenic areas respectively in Shanxi province and Shaanxi province are established, and you can appreciate the majesty of Hukou Waterfall from both of the two areas. So before planning your Hukou Waterfall tour , please make sure that you know which Hukou Waterfal Scenic Area you want to visit.

Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area Shanxi is located in Hukou Town, Jixian County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province (临汾市吉县壶口镇) while Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area Shaanxi is located in Yichuan County, Yanan City, Shaanxi Province(陕西省延安市宜川县). In one scenic area, you are able to see the travelers in the other scenic area on the other side of the river, but you cannot directly walk or drive to them. There is no big difference of the views of Hukou Waterfall from two different scenic areas, and you can decide which to go just according to your itinerary - in Shanxi or Shaanxi.

How to Get to Hukou Waterfall Shanxi

Hukou Waterfall is about 130km (80 miles) away from Linfen city, 280km (174 miles) away from Pingyao Ancient City, 380km (236 miles) away from Taiyuan and 660km (410 miles) away from Datong. Most travelers prefer get to Linfen first and then travel to Hukou Waterfall because there is no bus or high speed train running to Hukou Waterfall from Pingyao or some other popular gateway cities directly.

First Step: Get to Linfen first

Taking a high speed train is the most convenient way to travel China and Linfen can be reached by high speed trains from some of China's tourist destinations, like Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Lanzhou, etc. as well as many nearby cities, like Datong, Pingyao, Taiyuan, Yuncheng, etc. Among these cities, Pingyao is a very popular gateway city to take a high speed train to Linfen because of the short distance.

Second Step: Linfen to Hukou Waterfall

Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area Shanxi is 130km (80 miles) away from Linfen city and you can choose to drive or take a bus there.

By Driving: You can call a taxi to Hukou Waterfall or travel with a travel agency (like China Discovery) which offers private transfer service. The whole drive from Linfen city to Hukou Waterfall takes about 2 hours.

By Bus: There are two daily buses running to Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area (Shanxi) from Linfen Railway Station (临汾火车站) in the morning. However, you will arrive at Linfen West Railway Station (临汾西站) if you take a high speed train to Linfen, so you need to take a public bus (about 1 hour) to get to Linfen Railway Station first.

How to Get to Hukou Waterfall Shaanxi

Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area Shaanxi is about 130km (80 miles) away from Yanan city and 350km (217 miles) away from Xian city. It is available to travel from Xian or Yanan to Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area Shaanxi. But travelers always choose to start a Hukou Waterfall tour from Xian, because it can be reached easily and offers many world-class attractions to visit.

Step One: Get to Xian First

Flights to Xian: Xian Xianyang International Airport can be reached by international flights from Seoul, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Nagoya, Fukuoka, Niigata and Hiroshima in Japan, etc. and domestic flights from most big cities and tourist cities such as Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Kunming, Wuhan, Chongqing, Changsha, Nanjing, Xiamen, Qingdao, and Urumqi. Second Step: Xian to Hukou Waterfall

Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area Shaanxi 350km (217 miles) away from Xian city and you can travel between them by driving (using private transfer service) or take a long-distance bus.

By Driving: Using the transfer service from a travel agency is the best way to travel between Xian and Hukou Waterfall. The whole driving journey is about 4 hours.

By High Speed Train (plus Bus): There are 3 daily high speed trains from Xian to Fuxian East Railway Station (in Fuxian County) from which you can take a bus to Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area Shaanxi directly. The high speed train takes about 2 hours and the bus takes about 1.5 hours.

By Bus: There is one daily long-distance bus operating from Xian North Bus Station (城北客运站) to Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area Shaanxi. It is a 4 hours' journey usually.

How to Plan A Hukou Waterfall Tour

Generally speaking, it needs about 1 day to travel Hukou Waterfall, including transfer time and sightseeing time.

If you visit Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area Shanxi (山西), it is strongly recommended to travel it with Shanxi's other top destinations together, including Datong, Pingyao and Mount Wutai. A classic Shanxi tour takes about 7 days, with 1~2 days to visit the cultural wonders in Datong, 1 ~ 2 days to appreciate the old city and nearby attractions of Pingyao and 1~2 days to pay pilgrimage to Mount Wutai.
