Top regional restaurants
Rick stein at bannisters mollymook .
English celebrity chef Rick Stein’s seafood restaurant sits inside boutique hotel Bannisters by the Sea in Mollymook. The food is simply prepared, but of the highest quality – think Goan-style mussels from Jervis Bay, grilled scallops from Shark Bay – and is perhaps only outshone by sweeping ocean views from the breezy, light-filled dining room.

Jim wild's oysters .
Shuckers don’t get any more experienced than those at Jim Wild’s, occupying a shack at Greenwell Point. The estuary of the Crookhaven and Shoalhaven rivers is the breeding ground for Jim’s distinctive Sydney rock and Pacific oysters – the only other thing on the menu is fresh prawns. The motto here is, ‘nothing fancy, just fresh’.

Small-batch breweries & distilleries
Jervis bay brewing co .
Located in coastal Huskisson, this brewery creates a range of intriguingly named drops that reference local history and landmarks. Like the Point Perp Pilsner, the Eggcellent St. Chocolate Milk Stout, and the Rainbird Dark Lager. There’s a relaxed beer garden to enjoy those beers (and non-alcoholic offerings, too), and a rotation of food trucks, serving up the likes of wood-fired pizza and gourmet burgers.
Jervis Bay Brewing Co. , Huskisson
Flamin Galah Brewing Co
There are plenty of places to perch at this brewery, whether at tables on the front lawn, inside at the bar or at the back beer garden. As well as more than a dozen beers on tap at any time, the brewery produces its own low-calorie fruity seltzers and vodka, and has an array of popular cocktails on offer. The Nest, an on-site food truck, dishes up flathead tacos, sliders, wings fries and more.

Old Salt Distillery
This small and charming distillery makes a range of artisanal gins, vodkas and fruit liqueurs that take home awards across the country – they also make small-batch beers, real fruit-based seltzers and non-alcoholic sodas, all of which are on tap. 1. J ervis Bay 2. South Coast 3. Dolphins
With royal np, grand pacific drive and the whitest beach in the world, $ 725 /2 guests extra guest: from $ 110 , rural heritage, jervis bay, grand pacific drive & the whitest beach on earth.
The day trip to Jervis Bay lets you discover the jewel of the NSW South Coast. Located just over three hours south of Sydney, Jervis Bay is a beautiful destination! Discover stunning white sand beaches and cruise through turquoise waters on a dolphin watching tour!
Jervis Bay boasts the purest seawater in the world. So it’s no wonder that a large group of bottlenose dolphins live here, which we can visit on a cruise. Other marine life can also be spotted in the bay: Weedy sea dragons, small penguins, seals, the endangered nurse shark, Pacific gulls and – in the migration months October-December and May-August – even southern right whales and humpback whales!
Not to be missed on a day trip to Jervis Bay is a walk on the whitest beach in the world, Hyams Beach. With a bit of luck we might even spot a wallaby.
Heading south with the dramatic Great Dividing Range to the right and the Pacific Ocean to the left, we drive through lush green dairy pastures, past small coastal villages and along stunning ocean beaches.
From coastal villages to white sandy beaches, the NSW South Coast is a fascinating part of Australia!
Our first stop is Mt Bulli Lookout, overlooking the pretty Wollongong coastline. There we marvel at the daredevils among the paragliders who fearlessly plunge into the abyss from the high cliffs. We gaze at the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge – a brilliant piece of engineering along the road that awaits us: the Grand Pacific Drive. This 140-kilometre award-winning coastal road is lesser known than the Great Ocean Road in Victoria and the Captain’s Cook Highway in Far North Queensland, but no less spectacular.
Of course, we’ll stop at a beach for a photo, a short beach walk or, why not, a refreshing dip in one of Australia’s signature safe rock pools. Look out for sooty oystercatchers and hunting Pacific gulls. After surfing, continue south and stop at the famous Kiama Blowhole.
Upon arrival in Huskisson, you will have free time to explore the area and have lunch (included in the price). Then it’s off on our Jervis Bay dolphin watching cruise! Jervis Bay Marine Park is home to bottlenose dolphins, seals, penguins, seabirds and migrating whales (May – October). You may encounter any of these animals on our 2-hour dolphin cruise!
After the dolphin encounter, you’ll have time for a walk on the White Sands Trail, which runs along the bay past beautiful white sandy beaches. Jump in the water and take a swim (conditions permitting) or feel the sand between your toes.
On the way back to Sydney, we make a short refreshment stop at a scenic spot that our guide will identify that day.
Around 6.30 am we arrive at the hotel. Tired, but full of experiences that will never be forgotten.

The top 10 tours to book in Jervis Bay
Carla Grossetti
Sub-Editor & Journalist
30 October 2023
Discover more about Jervis Bay by booking an expert-led tour of the landscape.
It’s easy to understand why Jervis Bay is considered one of the jewels along Australia’s East Coast. In addition to its natural good looks, Jervis Bay offers the trifecta of coastal, marine and hinterland national parks. Here are the Top 10 tours to book in Jervis Bay that will show the region in its best light.
Go dolphin and whale watching
Whale watching in Jervis Bay extends from May to November, which covers the migration pattern of these majestic mammals as they cruise along the coastline. The chance of seeing whales on a Jervis Bay Wild tour is high as the whales come within a few clicks of the sea cliffs on Jervis Bay peninsula as they head north and, a few months later, come to rest with their calves in the sheltered bay. Both Jervis Bay Wild and Dolphin Watch Tours offer dolphin-watch tours year-round.
Whale watching in Jervis Bay extends from May to November.
Explore the region on a stand-up paddleboard
Time seems to fold in on itself while on a sunset experience with SUP with George . There is plenty to see while paddling around the protected perimeter of Jervis Bay Marine Park, which is an ideal place to absorb the beauty of your surrounds while learning about the importance of the Jervis Bay ecosystem. Look out for the resident dolphins on a group tour, or book a Brunch on the Beach experience where you SUP your way to a special location to find a picnic waiting for you.

See ancient rock art on an Indigenous cultural tour
Gadhungal Murring ‘means belonging to the sea’ and by taking visitors for a walk around Huskisson/Wandi Wandian Country, Gadhungal Murring founder Raymond Timbery connects visitors with ancient Indigenous stories passed down by his Bidjigal Dharawal clan elders. The tour provides visitors with opportunities to sample bush tucker, see the beauty of sacred Aboriginal middens and experience the stories, dances and songs that underpin the landscape.

Spot seals and dolphins on a South Coast Passage Cruise
A tour around Beecroft Peninsula with Jervis Bay Wild is punctuated with stops along the way to see ancient sea caves, watch dolphins at play and come across a seal colony. The South Coast Passage 2.5-hour tour starts and ends in Huskisson. Get your smartphone ready to snap a photo of the iridescent blue water framed by towering sea cliffs onboard the Jervis Bay Passage Cruise , which ploughs past Point Perpendicular Lighthouse. Dolphin Watch Cruises also offer jaunts around Jervis Bay.
Frame yourself with towering sea cliffs onboard the Jervis Bay Passage Cruise.
Hire a fishing charter
Satisfy all your fisho fantasies on a fishing charter out of Huskisson with Simos Afloat , which caters for game, sport, estuary, reef and bottom fishing. Enjoy the thrilling scenery from the comfort of the shaded deck of the Broadbill Cat as your captain navigates to great fishing spots such as Steamers Head or Georges Head. Expect to encounter everything from snapper to nannagai, bonito and tuna while fishing in the pristine waters.
Satisfy all your fisho fantasies.
Swim with whales and seals
There is no guarantee you will see whales on a Dive Jervis Bay tour. But statistically, there’s a 50:50 chance you will see these creatures in the wild during their migration north to breed and south to feed in Antarctica. Depending on conditions, the excursion may include a swim through some sea caves, a visit to a shark sanctuary and dolphin watching. In September and October, join Dive Jervis Bay for a Swim with Whales and Seals experience. Woebegone Freedive also has expeditions to the seals and a permit to swim with the whales.

Learn to surf
Local surfer Jerry Brown grew up in Jervis Bay and turned his passion into his business with the Jervis Bay Surf School . Beginners can sign up for a learn-to-surf session with one of JB Surf School’s qualified surf instructors at one of the local beaches that have gentle rolling waves that are ideal for beginners. The JB Surf School provides all the gear (surfboards, wetsuits, rash vests etc).
Jervis Bay Sea Kayaks
Set off for a paddle around Jervis Bay on Sea Kayak Jervis Bay’s most popular touring route from Iluka Beach around to Murray’s Beach in Booderee National Park. The 1.5-hour Discover Jervis Bay Sea Kayaking Tour also glides around Bowen Island without landing on it (it’s a bird sanctuary) to get a good look at the shearwater sea birds that make the remarkable 15,000-kilometre migration from Alaska each year and a colony of little penguins.

Catch the Husky Ferry
The Husky Ferry Service is a short and sweet 10-minute shuttle service from Myola to Huskisson. But the ultimate bucket- list experience is booking a sunset cruise on the dinky little boat over summer where you can BYO wine and cheese and punt up Currambene Creek with captain and DJ Dave. The Husky Ferry is also available for a two-hour private charter for up to 12 passengers.

Departing from Illawarra Regional Airport, we’ll join the coastline over Kiama where you’ll have a birds-eye view of the famous blowhole and fishing harbour. From the air you’ll see all the little bays, beaches and coastal walking tracks that make Kiama a popular tourist spot throughout the year.
The coastline south of Kiama, as we track towards Gerringong, is as spectacular as it is dramatic. Having seen the meandering, rolling, Kiama to Gerringong walking track from the air, you’ll want to make that the next item you tick off your bucket list. The architectural masterpieces built as homes in some of the hills and valleys just off the coast are a sight to behold and a dream residence for most.
Gerringong itself is home to the award winning vineyard; Crooked River Wines. But just for now we’ll continue our flight and drop in for a closer look a bit later. More and more a home to the celebs, Gerringong and Gerroa boast some beautiful locations for swimming, surfing or maybe even people watching from a number of the great food outlets on the high street. Pssst! We even landed on Gerringong Golf Course a while back to take Guy Seabastian for a game of golf! Werri Beach is the main attraction for surfers though, boasting two point breaks located at either end of the beach.
As we continue down the coast, the view ahead is consumed by Seven Mile Beach stretching out into the distance. Back in 1933 Sir Charles Kingsford Smith used the beach as a runway for the first commercial aeroplane flight from Australia to New Zealand. These days avid beachgoers don’t have to worry about low flying aircraft churning up the sand while they are sunbathing. If you look down below you will see the local surf school trying to teach students the noble art of balancing on a surfboard.
As we continue along Seven Mile Beach, towards the township of Shoalhaven Heads, you will begin to make out Jervis Bay in the distance. Looking inland you can see the standalone Coolangatta Mountain which was believed to be an old volcano but is actually just a product of the natural erosion of sandstone in the area. At its based is the reknowned Coolangatta Estate Winery and Restaurant.
Just south of Comerong Island and the Shoalhaven River, the picturesque Culburra Beach leads the way to Currarong. About half way along we divert into Jervis Bay overhead the shark breeding ground at Cararma Creek. Spilling into Jervis Bay, during breeding season, the creek is home to between 80 to 100 baby Bronze Whaler sharks. Very rarely do you see fully grown sharks in the bay but at the right time of year the shark “pups” swarm the little creek mouth.
Now in Jervis Bay proper, you’ll see how the pure white sands of the beach play with the transparent, tranqil, aquamarine waters. These sandy shores are amongst the most strikingly beautiful on the planet. Onward past Callala Beach, next on the itinerary is Huskisson; home to the famous Huskisson Pub and home port for both whale watching and dolphin watching cruises.
By far the most well known beach in Jervis Bay and particularly well known for its blinding white talcum powder sands is Hyams Beach. The colour of the sand is due to the pure quartz mineral composition. Your photo’s of the clear aquamarine waters gently caressing the fine white sands of the beach could easily fool people into thinking you have been whisked away by helicopter to the Caribbean. Absolutely stunning!
As you ponder the beaches below, its not hard to imagine yourself taking a warm evening stroll with the sun blushing red, your feet bathed one moment in the soft talcum powder sand and the next in the exotic waters of the bay. But decadent thoughts for what could be will have to be put on hold. Lunch at an award winning, wining and dining venue beckons. Leaving the coastline behind we head for Crooked River Winery.
Crooked River’s commercial winery was completed in 2001. The winery boasts 280,000 litres of stainless steel fermentation and storage tanks and 70,000 litres of oak barrels. In 20 years of production, Crooked River Wines has won multiple awards for its premium quality red and white wines. Crooked River Wines is the largest vineyard on the NSW South Coast.
A spectacular setting with views overlooking the vineyard, Crooked River Restaurant is also the perfect location for lunch. With such an extensive menu there are sumptuous options for everyone no matter their taste. We guarantee that you’ll find just the right red or white to complement your meal as well.
After a couple of hours for lunch, wine tasting, contemplation and a relaxing walk around the grounds, it is time to head home. But the adventure is not quite over yet.
Departing Crooked River Winery, you will be able to catch glimpses of the distant Kangaroo Valley as well as the Fitzroy and Wingecarribee Reservoirs out to the west. To the north you will see the whole of the Illawarra laid out before you with Lake Illawarra at its centre. Strain your eyes some more and you might just be able to make out the distant jagged skyline of Sydney over a 100 km’s away.
The journey back to base is short but filled with beautiful landscape scenery; lush green hills rolling down to the waters edge; iconic architectural homes perched looking out to sea; the famous Kiama Blowhole and its smaller sibling blowing frothing seawater high into the air; Kiama lighthouse; the sparkling new marina at Shell Cove; and finally the channel guarded by Windang Island which allows the spiritual waters of Lake Illawarra to flow in and out of the Pacific Ocean.
