The Best Time to Visit Cuba

It’s pretty much summer all year long in Cuba, but some months are hotter, stickier, and more uncomfortable than others. The best time to visit Cuba is between November and April. These are not only Cuba’s driest months but also good bets for 70 degree blue sky days made for exploring cobblestone streets and lounging on secluded postcard-perfect beaches.

While December through February are Cuba’s coldest months, temperatures are usually in the 70s. Lows might dip into the 60s, but you’ll never need a coat, hat or gloves. Winter days are long, with nearly 11 hours of daylight even in December, and there are few better places to escape the winter back home than a Caribbean island nation where summer lasts all year long.

Peak Season in Cuba

Easter, Christmas, and New Year’s are popular travel times in Cuba. Hotels, flights, and tours can book up ahead of time, and prices may increase slightly as well. Snowbirds seek out Cuba throughout the winter months when temperatures are far cooler and often accompanied by snow, ice, and strong winds back home.

Cuba’s Hurricane Season

Hurricanes are rare in Cuba, but to further minimize the possibility of trip disruptions, avoid planning travel to Cuba in August and September. While hurricane season officially runs from June through November, Caribbean hurricanes most frequently occur in August and September.

June through August are the hottest months of the year in Cuba and the country’s summer season. Average temperatures are in the 80s but don’t be surprised by a 90-degree day. Summers in Cuba can also be humid, making for a hot, sticky, sweaty vacation that’s more uncomfortable than it needs to be. Cuba’s rainy season stretches from April through November and could cramp your Cuban summer beach style.

But summer brings some of Cuba’s most exciting festivals, and Cubans are more likely to be off from school and work for summer vacations, making some destinations more lively than at other times of the year.

Events to check out

• Late June brings a celebration of bolero music to Havana and bolero concerts to Santiago de Cuba and other cities across the country.
• July brings Fiesta del Fuego, a sizzling celebration of Afro-Caribbean culture, to Santiago de Cuba, a Spanish settlement in southeastern Cuba that’s known for its colonial architecture, revolutionary history, and Afro-Cuban cultural influences. The event draws speakers, guests, and musical acts from across the Caribbean.
• July also brings one of Cuba's marquee celebrations, Carnival, to Santiago de Cuba, considered the most African city on the island. Carnival floods Santiago de Cuba's streets with masked partiers and lengthy conga lines. Carnival migrates to Havana in August, though the capital city's celebrations are generally more muted than in Santiago de Cuba. Still, you're sure to find plenty of street parties and open-air concerts to keep you busy.
• In August, Havana also hosts an international hip hop festival. Temperatures may be sizzling, but so is the hip hop scene in Havana at this time of year.

September and October can still be muggy and hot in Cuba, but temperatures start cooling off in November. October is one of the slowest months in Cuban tourism and provides additional opportunities for bargains and enjoying this country without the crowds.

• September may still be muggy, but this is when Cuba honors its national saint, the Virgin of Cobre. Pilgrimages to her altar occur in the small Cuban town El Cobre and celebrations in her honor are held across the country early during the month.
• October brings the Days of Cuban Culture, a chance to celebrate Cuba's anti-colonial spirit and rich Afro-Cuban culture.
• Also in October: the Matamoros Son music festival in Santiago de Cuba, an International Ballet Festival in Havana, and an International Fishing Tournament, held at Jardines del Ray beach.

Winter is the best time to visit Cuba. These months may bring bone-chilling temperatures to much of the world, but Cuba remains a paradise from November through February. Temperatures are in the 70s, the water is warm, and it’s like winter isn’t even real. Do be aware, Christmas and New Year’s are popular travel times in Cuba. Hotels, flights, and tours can book up ahead of time, and prices may increase slightly as well.

• By December, the temperatures in Cuba have cooled to idyllic 70-something degrees. Still, the International Festival of New Latin American Film is likely to coax travelers indoors with a packed schedule of films showing over 10 days in early December.
• Late December brings Las Parrandas, an extravagant Christmas Eve Carnival with late-night parades, ornate floats and lots of fireworks.
• January in Cuba is for jazz lovers and when Havana—a hotbed for Cuban jazz music—hosts an International Jazz Festival .
• February brings the International Book Fair, focused on Spanish language texts, to Havana. Havana's international book fair is considered to be among the top book fairs in Latin America.
• Havana hosts the Habanos Festival in February, as well. This is one you'll want to visit if you're a cigar aficionado with a penchant for a Cuban stogie.

Spring can also be a pleasant time to visit Cuba, but April and May have the potential to bring rainy days. Cuba’s rainy season begins in April and runs through November with the wettest months seeing rain for an average of nearly 11 days a month. Temperatures are quick to climb, so don’t be surprised to find hot, muggy weather already settling in during April vacations.

• Mid-march is when you'll want to visit Cuba if you can't get enough of the country's exquisitely maintained classic cars. Havana hosts a weeklong celebration of classic cars each March to celebrate the Detroit dinosaurs that fill its streets. There's usually at least one caravan of classic cars from another Cuban city.
• To experience something truly unique, plan your visit in May when Cuba hosts its May Day parades and public gatherings across the country. The biggest of these events occurs in Havana's Plaza de la Revolución and draws upwards of 100,000 people. May Day is the traditional socialist observation of Labor Day.
• Late May brings the International Blue Marlin Tournament, a big-game fishing competition held at Marina Hemingway.

The best time to visit Cuba is between November and April when the weather is dry and temperatures are cool and pleasant. In the winter, daily temperatures typically fall between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 77 degrees Celsius.)

The rainy season begins in April and lasts until November, coinciding with hurricane season which begins in June.

August is the hottest month in Havana with an average high temperature of 89 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) and an average low temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius).

First of all, there is no wrong time to visit Cuba, as such. But there are a few factors to take into account, chief among them is the weather. Cuba has a hot and sunny tropical climate, with dry and wet seasons: the dry season runs from November to April; the wet season from May to September. However, even during the wet season, you can still expect balmy temperatures, and the downpours never last that long. But assuming you want the least amount of rain, and the most amount of sunshine, the dry season is generally the best time of year to visit Cuba.

Broadly speaking, in terms of rainfall and temperature, the dry season months of March and April are the best months to visit Cuba. It’s dry and warm during this time, with average temperatures sitting at 27-29˚C during the day, and comfortable at night around 19-21˚C.

Other considerations affecting when to go to Cuba

There are factors besides the weather to take into account for figuring out when to visit Cuba. The peak tourist season in Cuba runs roughly from mid-December to mid-March, and all of July and August. Prices are highest and crowds thickest in summer, when the holiday season for Cubans gets under way.

As much of the atmosphere of the smaller resorts is generated by tourists, Cuban and foreign, out of season they can seem somewhat dull – although you’ll benefit from lower prices. The cities, particularly Havana and Santiago , are always buzzing and offer good value for money throughout the year.

Compared to the all-out celebrations in other countries, Christmas is a lowkey affair in Cuba, with the emphasis on private family celebration. New Year’s Eve, also the eve of the anniversary of the Revolution, is much more fervently celebrated. And if you’re going to base your trip around one key event, carnival in Santiago, held each year in July, is unmissable.

The dry season in Cuba falls roughly from mid-November to April. This is when dry weather matches sunny days and warm temperatures across the island. So if it’s wet and cold where you are and you’re looking to thaw out, this is the best time to travel to Cuba.

Visiting Cuba in December – February

In the winter months of January and February the mercury can drop as low as 15˚C, and even lower at night. If you intend to go into the mountains it’s advisable to pack something warmer than a T-shirt. The cooler temperatures make for good sightseeing though, although it’s perhaps less ideal for sun worshippers hoping to bake on one of Cuba’s soft sandy beaches.

January and February are great months to visit the sixteenth-century town of Trinidad and Sancti Spíritus , and Santiago , with temperatures sitting around a not too fierce 28˚C.

Bear in mind that prices spike over the Christmas period and you’ll need to book well ahead if planning to travel to Cuba at this time.

In terms of cultural events happening around now, there are a few biggies. The ten-day film festival (Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano Festival) kicks off in Havana in early December and is one of Cuba’s top events, and the Bienal de la Habana (Havana biennale) showcases the best in visual arts. Cubans go all out for New Year, which also celebrates the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, and mid-January sees the excellent Havana International Jazz Festival. Visiting Cuba in March – April

March and April are the best months to visit for long days of sunshine and dry weather. It’s the perfect time to lay down your towel on one of Cuba’s picture perfect beaches, such as Playa Ancón, or Playa Los Pinos on Cayo Sabinal – or if you’re after a livelier scene, Varadero.

Those wishing to try diving at some of Cuba’s top diving spots will enjoy optimum conditions, such as those around the Jardines del Rey , María La Gorda and Cayo Largo .

It’s also an ideal time to explore inland Cuba, such as the Parque Nacional Alejandro de Humboldt, which has ideal trekking conditions in March. The idyllic eco hill resort of Las Terraza and the surrounding hiking terrain also make for a wonderful stopover at this time of year. And the Viñales valley and the peaks of the Sierra Maestra would be great additions to your itinerary.

It’s worth considering it’s also peak season in Cuba – reflected in the rise in cost of flights and accommodation, especially during the Easter holidays, so we advise booking ahead as far as possible.

If you visit in the summer, and more broadly between May and October, considered the wet season, expect it to rain on at least a couple of days over a fortnight. Don’t let this put you off, though. Although it comes down hard and fast, rain rarely stays for very long in Cuba, and the clouds soon break to allow sunshine through to dry everything out. There’s also perhaps a good trade off: rain means fewer visitors – so you can be more spontaneous when it comes to booking tours, accommodation and so on. And if you prefer a quieter time during your trip, it’s a win-win situation.

Eastern Cuba tends to be hotter and more humid during this part of the year, while the temperature in the area around Trinidad and Sancti Spíritus also creeps above the national average.

Visiting Cuba in May – August

The rainy season is just beginning in May, but doesn’t really get underway until the end of July or early August. Even then, you’ll most likely still get plenty of clear days. And if you want to get in some beach action you’ll most likely avoid the rain if you get there earlier in the day. May and June temperatures make for comfortable travel.

July through September sees temperatures soar to around 32˚C in Havana and Pinar del Río . Eastern areas, such as Santiago de Cuba, experience sweltering heat of around 33˚C.

If you don’t mind a little rain and potential sogginess you can seize the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in June and July – before temperatures soar in August. Visitor numbers are fewer and it’s easier to find good casa particulares. Horseriding in the Viñales valley is a great way to explore the area at this time – horses make light work of the mud!

For festivals , July and August are the best times to be in Havana and Santiago. Both are settings for the vibrant annual carnival, and worth organising your itinerary around these lively, joyous events. Santiago is also host to the Fiesta del Caribe Santiago de Cuba, a week-long celebration of Caribbean music and dance, at the beginning of July.

Prices rise in July and August and it gets noticeably busier, as this is when Cubans traditionally take their holidays. However, the more low-key resorts come to life during this time, whereas off season the cultural activities and liveliness generated by visitors tapers off.

Visiting Cuba in September – November

September and October are the most threatening months of the annual hurricane season that runs from June to November, particularly in coastal areas. Compared to other Caribbean islands and some Central American countries, however, Cuba has so far held up relatively well even in the fiercest of hurricanes. Bear in mind though that rural areas are more vulnerable and hurricanes can cause some mountain trails and national parks to close.

Wet weather, humidity and hurricanes aside, if you’re keeping an eye on the cost and perhaps want to experience Cuba during the quieter months, September and October are good times to visit. You can dig out decent deals on everything from flights and accommodation, to tours.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Cuba?

But as you try to narrow down your itinerary while in Cuba, you may wonder what the best time to visit Cuba is.

Cuba Climate: What To Expect Around the Year

The first thing that will change depending on the month of your visit is the weather. Like the rest of the Caribbean, Cuba is a land of “endless summer” – at least at first glance. While you can definitely find outdoor activities around the year, some months will have cooler climates, sunnier skies, or even lower prices.

Seasons in Cuba

Cuba doesn’t have the traditional four seasons that temperate regions do. Instead, it has just two: a “dry” season and a “rainy” one.

The dry season lasts from November to April, and it is characterized by less frequent rain, although it’s far from completely dry. During December and January, average temperatures also dip slightly (but never reach “cold” levels under any definition), and the air gets a bit drier, which helps the air feel cooler overall.

The rainy season lasts from May to October. Expect short showers nearly every day and full-blown rainy days at least once a week during this season.

As local legend would have it, the first rains of May are particularly auspicious, as they can relieve chronic diseases and cleanse your spirit from impurities.

Hurricanes in Cuba

So what about hurricane season? Technically, hurricane season overlaps with the end of the rainy season, between June and November. During this time, the sky can go from bright to gray in a matter of minutes.

As for actual hurricanes – they rarely hit the island, and they are unlikely to affect your safety or your belongings. Cuban citizens like to joke that nothing works as well in Cuba as the Civil Defense office. You may need to spend a day safe indoors, but on the other hand, you will be able to experience one of the quintessential “island experiences.”

High versus low season

Let’s talk about tourism seasons, as they will affect the ease with which you book and the final cost of your trip.

There are two peak tourism seasons in Cuba. The first one goes from late December until March (or from Christmas to the Easter break). This is also the sunniest and coolest time of the year when the beaches are at their most enticing (and if you come from the Northern Hemisphere, that’s exactly what you’ll be needing).

The second “peak” covers most of July and August. During this time, Cuban schools will be on recess, so expect longer lines at many nature parks and museums, and you may need to share the beach with other humans.

The low season goes from early May to late June (prices drop as temperatures rise) and between September and October (tourism slows down at the start of hurricane season). During this time, expect lower prices, quieter beaches, and the opportunity to stroll around museums at your own pace.

Dealing With the Tropical Heat

If you live in a cooler or temperate country, you may be worried about handling Cuba’s tropical heat. The sharp temperature change can be a bit disconcerting, especially if you travel during your winter. Don’t worry! In my twenty-something years of living on this island, I’ve gathered a few pro tips that will help you handle the heat waves as the locals do:

• - Make sure you wear sunscreen of at least SPF 50. Even if you don’t “burn and peel” easily, a mild sunburn will leave you with a permanent cloud of heat around your body the next day.
• - Wear loose, thin clothes with long sleeves in cotton or linen. Try to keep the handcuffs and waistlines loose to allow air to flow around you.
• - Remember, “siesta” was invented for a reason! Just because we all seem to disappear right after lunch doesn’t mean we are truly sleeping. Between noon and 3 PM, it’s best to plan an indoor activity (preferably somewhere with A/C)
• - Check if your hotel room has A/C. If you’re staying at a rented apartment or home, look for one that has a sun porch or terrace and embrace the island schedule.

Festivals and Celebrations

Cuba is much more than its countryside. Its cities host a variety of festivals, summits, and parades that can be just as fascinating – it all depends on what you are looking for. From street parties to the chance of experiencing the biggest stars of vintage rhythms, it all depends on when you come.

Here are some of the highlights to look forward to:

January: The year kicks off with the country-wide celebrations for the Anniversary of the Revolution. In Havana, this is followed by the International Jazz Festival, which brings some of the genre’s biggest stars to the city.

February: The Habano Festival is all about one of the country’s top exports. You can visit Cuban cigar factories and tobacco farms, attend seminars, or book special cigar dinners that blend signature aromas with the right food pairings.

March: The largest Carnival on the island is held at Santiago de Cuba. Parades can easily last until 3 AM, but the party usually continues until sunrise.

April : The International Biennial of Graphic Humor, held at San Antonio de Los Baños, gathers cartoonists and satirists worldwide.

May : The Romerías festival combines a Spanish harvest festival with religious rituals. The town of Holguín dons its best clothes for a series of free concerts, parades, and a collective pilgrimage atop the local hill.

June : Head to Trinidad for the Fiestas Sanjuaneras or San Juan fest , which marks the longest day of the year. Dance to some of the oldest forms of African music still alive and beating.

July : During the Fiesta del Fuego (Fire Festival), the city of Santiago de Cuba loses itself in revelry to welcome back the Nzambi Congo , an ancient African deity, who is then paraded through the streets.

August : Havana’s International Hip-Hop Festival (Urban Potaje) takes place on the second week of August, just as the Havana Carnival cools down on the 7th.

September : The Feast of Our Lady of Charity (La Virgen de la Caridad) offers an unusual window into the island’s traditional religious fervor. As she is the island’s Patroness, expect her Feast to open the gates of every colonial church in Havana.

October : The International Ballet Festival of Havana may provide a window for traditional dancers, but in the smaller city of Matanzas, you can dance to the faster rumba rhythms during the Rumbero Bailador Fest.

November : In Majagua, the Red and Blue Bands Party divides the population into two teams for sports competitions, food fairs, and traditional dances.

December : In the city of Remedios, Christmas carols are replaced with Parrandas, loud and boisterous competitions in which each neighborhood prepares a special “surprise” while trying to spoil their rivals’.

Outdoor Activities

If you need sunshine and fresh air to recharge, you may have a harder time choosing the ideal dates for your trip – especially if you are booking months in advance. These activities will depend heavily on the day’s weather, which is particularly unpredictable in Cuba.

However, that doesn’t mean that some dates won’t increase your chances of success. Here are a few considerations:

• - Planning to hike, camp, or mountain bike? Then try to come during the dry season. During the rainy season, trails may be muddy, and some parts of the countryside may be inaccessible just as you’re passing by.
• - Snorkeling and scuba diving technically just need a sunny, beach-worthy day. Try to leave a couple of “free” days on your schedule so you can rebook any activities.
• - The fishing season in Cuba goes from March to June. If you’re interested in a specific species, check with your tour operator, and expect to “capture and free” your catch!
• - If you want to sail or surf, avoid hurricane season. Even if no hurricane is headed for the island directly, one passing through a nearby island could make the Coast Guard keep you ashore.

However, you should know that Cuba has two distinct seasons that may have a big impact on the weather, the travel costs, the mosquitoes , and, most importantly, how much fun you’ll have on your trip.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Cuba?

The best time to go to Cuba is the dry season (November to April). The most popular months to visit Cuba are March, January, and February.

The rainy season is much less popular since it’s wetter, hotter, and more humid. If beautiful weather is a big priority for you, then September, October, and June are not the best times to visit Cuba. However, budget-savvy travelers and visitors looking to backpack Cuba and avoid big crowds of tourists will love the slower season. What Is the Weather like in Cuba?

Cuba has two seasons. The wet season is when 70% of the island’s rainfall occurs, which means lots of heat and humidity between May and October. On the other hand, the dry season brings cooler, dryer weather to the island between November and April.

Despite some seasonal variations in the weather, you can expect Cuba to be fairly hot, sunny, and buggy all year round.

Keep an eye on the Cuba Weather Calendar and compare the weather forecast during your stay in Cuba against the NWS Heat Index . This way, you can measure how hot it will really feels in Cuba.

Be prepared. Sunscreen and water bottle with filte r are a must. Sunburn, dehydration, and heat stroke are all serious risks if you aren’t prepared.

Mosquito-born illnesses are also a risk, so remember to pack your insect repellent . It’s also a good idea to bring a  first aid kit if you run into any trouble.

Visiting Cuba in the Wet Season (May to October)

Cuba’s “wet season” earned its nickname thanks to the heavy rainfall that hits the island from late spring to early fall.

Due to the extreme heat, outdoor activities like backpacking and long-distance cycling may not be enjoyable. However, the beaches are absolutely perfect.

Average temperatures and humidity in the wet season

Cuba is HOT! This is true all year round, but especially during the wet season. High humidity levels magnify the heat, so prepare wisely if you travel during this time.

Rarely colder than 75 degrees Fahrenheit, daytime temperatures average in the 80s and 90s, which translates into felt-temperatures of 103°F or higher. Heat is worst around midday, so plan indoor activities between 11 am and 3 pm.

Cubans refer to this time of day as when “dogs don’t come after their master.” And when you do venture outside, bring lots of water and sunscreen !

Precipitation in the wet season

Spoiler alert: there’s a reason it’s called the wet season!

During this time, Cuba experiences most of its rain, getting anywhere from 4.7 to 6.7 inches of rain each month between June and September.

Daily thunderstorms are pretty common, especially during the afternoon. Expect the weather to worsen in late summer when hurricane season kicks off.

Sunshine and beaches in the wet season

Although you’re more likely to see dark clouds during the wet season, sunshine and blue skies are still plentiful.

Beaches are the place to be during Cuba’s wet season. The warm water and the trade winds are gentle so that you can look forward to idyllic days of swimming and relaxation.

Marine life is also pretty quiet during this time, so you won’t have to worry about jellyfish, algae, or seaweed ruining the view.

Mornings and early evenings are perfect for beachgoers, but watch out for dark clouds, rain, and choppy waters around midday. Stay safe by hopping out of the water as soon as you notice dark clouds or lightning on the horizon!

Hurricanes in the wet season

Hurricanes usually make their appearance at the tail end of the rainy season. You’re most likely to experience a hurricane from mid-August through the end of October.

Mosquitoes in the wet season

Prepare for mosquitoes — lots of them. Mosquitoes breed when the weather is hot and damp, so Cuba’s wet season is their favorite time of year.

You won’t see as many mosquitoes on the beaches, but you’re sure to run into them if you leave the coast for the cities and countryside.

Remember that mosquitoes aren’t just annoying; they can also harbor diseases like Zika or dengue.

Don’t panic. Cuba is generally safe . Just pack lots of bug spray to keep them away. If you plan to camp outside, bringing a mosquito net is also a good idea.

Food in the wet season

Most fresh vegetables become scarce or frozen at buffets in the wet season, but fruits are in vogue. Mango, pineapple, avocado, mamey , banana, watermelon, papaya, and even greens like kimbombó , fava beans, pumpkin, and sweet potato are easy to find.

A steady drinking water supply is critical to surviving Cuba’s steamy wet season. Drinkable water is relatively scarce in Cuba , and we don’t recommend drinking tap water. Bottled water is hard to come by, even in the big cities, and virtually unheard of if you venture deep into the countryside.

This will require you to plan ahead. A reusable water bottle with a built-in filter will be your best traveling companion.

Important events in the wet season

Cuba’s rainy season isn’t quite as busy as the dry season. However, there are still plenty of exciting festivals and cultural events. Here’s what we recommend checking out:

Visiting Cuba in the Dry Season (November to April)

If you don’t visit during the rainy season, you’ll be traveling in Cuba’s other season: the dry season. This occurs from November through April and is characterized by dryer, cooler weather.

Average temperatures and humidity in the dry season

The dry season brings cooler weather to Cuba. The average temperature from April to May is 78 degrees, while Cuba’s coolest months, December to March, hover around 72 degrees.

Temperatures fluctuate more during the dry season as cold fronts sweep down from the Eastern United States, so you may want to bring a light jacket or sweater .

Precipitation in the dry season

Did you know that Cuba only gets 30% of its annual rainfall during the dry season? That means precipitation is low, and storms are infrequent.

Sunshine and beaches in the dry season

Since Cuba doesn’t get much rain during the dry season, you can expect consistently clear, sunny skies. While the temperatures are cooler, the sun is still intense, so we recommend slathering on sunscreen when you head out.

One downside is that marine life also loves the dry season. Jellyfish swim near the coast and won’t hesitate to give you a venomous poke if you accidentally swim too close. Seaweed and algae will roll in one tide and wash up on the beaches.

Hurricanes during the dry season are exceedingly rare. You’re most likely to experience a hurricane in Cuba between August and October, so it’s safe to say your trip will be hurricane-free if you travel during spring or winter.

Mosquitoes in the dry season

Mosquitoes are big fans of humidity, so you won’t see as many during the dry season. However, remember that “fewer mosquitoes” doesn’t mean “no mosquitoes.” Cuba is a sub-tropical Caribbean island, so its warmth is favorable to year-long insect populations.

Food in the dry season

The dry season will be the best time to visit Cuba if you love fresh vegetables. This is the high run for harvesting. Lots of local greens become inexpensive delicacies… at least for the visitor´s pockets.

As a guest in a casa particular or Airbnb in Cuba , you can surely ask for red tomatoes, sweet peppers, cabbage, cucumbers, onions, and carrots. Salads, juices, and natural covers for the face and red skin will make you delighted.

The Cheapest Time to Visit Cuba

As a rule of thumb, the rainy season (May to October) is typically the cheapest time to travel to Cuba.

Your trip budget may vary depending on when you choose to visit Cuba.

Some travel costs to Cuba remain similar during most of the year, such as the cost of food and drinks, private transportation, Viazul buses , Internet, and entertainment.

Others, like the cost of flights and accommodations, may significantly increase depending on the travel season.

Peak season in Cuba (December to March, July, and August)

Flight prices: Prices run between $400 and $500 from the U.S. to Cuba. Traveling from the east coast of the USA is typically cheaper than the west coast.

Casas particulares : Casas fill up quickly, and you won’t see many vacancies, so booking your room well in advance is wise. If you can get a room, it’ll cost around $25/night.

Hotels: Like casas , hotels fill up quickly during peak season. A room in luxury resorts can run anywhere from $200 to $800 a night.

Shoulder season in Cuba (April, May, June, and November)

Flight prices: Ticket prices start between $300 and $350.

Casa particulares : Rooms are easier to find than during peak season, but we still recommend booking ahead of time. Nightly rates will cost roughly $25/night.

Hotels: $150-450 a night is pretty common.

Low season in Cuba (September and October)

Flight prices: Flights are more affordable at $250 to $300.

Casas particulares : Rooms are cheaper at around $20/night and much easier to find, even in popular areas like Havana. This is the perfect time for last-minute travelers.

Hotels: Vacancies are more common, but prices still run between $150 and $350/night.

Food was not in abundant limited to pork or fish no salads and not many vegetables .disappointed in all meals no variety in potatoes scares in butter ,milk ,and so much more.

We visit Cuba twice a year and have been there 21 times. We normally go to Varadero however… we booked 2 weeks at Cayo Coco for this upcoming May/20. Our last visit to Cuba was end October/19 in Santa Maria and although I had never seen a Jellyfish… I got stung pretty bad. My question is what is the season for Jellyfish in Varadero and Cayo Coco? When is the best time to visit Cuba?

The best time to visit  Cuba  falls between November and April (during the country’s dry season) with comfortable to warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine hours. But, with nice weather comes loads of tourists, so expect price increases across accommodation and activities and crowds at popular sites and cities. However, due to the country’s location and tropical climate, Cuba generally enjoys favorable weather all year round with the exception of hurricane season during September and October.

The best time to visit Havana is between December and March when the country’s going through its dry season and temperatures are warm but manageable (there’s nothing worse than being stuck in the city come the middle of the year when every step outside feels like you’re moving through solid air). If you’re lucky, there might not be as many  European  and  North American  tourists around during this time (if they head to the snow in their own countries), meaning accommodation prices will be lower.

While Varadero is a year-round destination, the best time to visit is between January and April when weather conditions are at their most stable and temperatures are warm but not uncomfortable. As it’s a resort town, expect to do plenty of swimming and other water-based activities, especially since water temperatures sit at around 75°F-84°F. 

Best for: salsa dancing lessons, hiking and local markets

It’s mostly sparkling blue skies and warm temperatures in January in Cuba however, the country can be subject to unexpected cold fronts moving in from the north so pack clothes you can layer in case it gets cold, especially at nighttime.

January also experiences very little rainfall countrywide so it’s one of the best months to lace up your hiking boots and head out into Cuba’s great outdoors. If you’re looking to challenge yourself, embark on an overnight hike to the summit of the country’s highest peak, Pico Turquino. But, if you’re after something a little less strenuous (but no less impressive), try out the popular hiking destinations of Vinales and Pinares de Mayari.

Best for: road trips, waterfall chasing and exploring UNESCO World Heritage listed sites

The peak season crowds of December and January have lessened somewhat but February is still a busy month to visit Cuba thanks to its fantastic weather – think sunny days with minimal rainfall and average temperatures of around 77°F. This kind of weather lends itself to long road trips with the car’s top and searching for natural beauty in the form of cascading waterfalls (El Nicho is our recommendation) and golden sandy beaches in Varadero and Cayo Santa Maria.

Best for: listening to traditional Cuban music and cycling through the country’s lush landscapes

The fantastic weather continues in March with warmer temperatures than both January and February and very little rainfall (March experiences the least amount of rainfall out of the whole year). Summer’s high humidity levels have also disappeared so doing any form of activity outside is automatically more enjoyable than in previous months.

If you want to make the most of the month’s favorable weather, cycling is a good way to explore Cuba’s landscapes. Hiking is also popular, especially in the morning before temperatures reach their peak. When the sun goes down, the music comes out so salsa dancing and listening to traditional Cuban musicians doing their thing is also a favorite local pastime.

Best for: cultural events and easter celebrations

Temperatures are heating up in Cuba in April – think averages of around 82°F with maximums of 95°F. But the rains expected in May haven’t arrived yet so it’s a fantastic time to get out and explore Cuba’s natural beauty. The bigger cities in Cuba are also buzzing with various cultural festivals, including the Biennal Art Festival in Havana which only comes around every three years.

Best for: May Day parade festivities and religious processions

May signals the start of the wet season in Cuba so expect plenty of rain and high humidity levels. Days will often start out hot and sunny before succumbing to gloomy skies and thunderstorms in the afternoon, so get all of your exploring done before lunchtime. But the one positive about visiting Cuba in May is that you’ll have the bigger cities and popular resort areas largely to yourself. This also means accommodation prices will be lower so your money will go further (that’s a win if we’ve ever heard one).

Best for: wandering around art galleries, enjoying cigars and fishing

Humidity levels have been turned right up in Cuba in June with high temperatures and weather conditions starting to feel like you’re in a sauna every time you step outside. Steer clear of the country’s eastern provinces (including Las Tunas and Holguin) as temperatures are often too high to feel comfortable. But, despite the threat of stormy weather (June is officially the start of hurricane season), there’s still plenty of sunshine to bask in and you won’t have to compete with the crowds of peak season.

Best for: sipping on drinks in local bars and festival-going

July wins the title of one of the hottest and most humid months out of the year but what it lacks in comfortable weather, it makes up for in lively spirit, boasting one of the biggest carnivals in all of Cuba – the Festival del Feugo (Fiesta del Caribe). Held in Santiago de Cuba, this weeklong cultural extravaganza is a celebration of pan-Caribbean music and dance and promises a fascinating insight into this country’s creative scene.

Temperature-wise, averages sit at around 90°F (maximums sit at around 97°F) and while rainfall is definitely still expected, it’s not as rainy as June or September. You can also expect travelers from Europe and North America to return to Cuba towards the end of the month as summer holidays begin but for the most part, there’ll be fewer crowds in the bigger cities.

Best for: staying in all-inclusive beach resorts and watching baseball games

Welcome to August, the month with Cuba’s highest temperatures and humidity levels. But if there’s a positive to come out of the month’s sizzling weather (average temperatures sit at around 90°F with maximums reaching 97°F), it’s the chance to relax at one of Cuba’s fantastic coastal beach resorts. Soak up all that sun and swim for hours before retiring to your room for a small siesta in the afternoon when the brief but heavy rains hit.

The European and North American crowds are well and truly here so expect to share your holiday with families and young adults looking to let their hair down now that school’s out. While this means accommodation prices will be higher, the activities on offer in August more than make up for it with baseball season starting at the beginning of the month.

Best for: birding and other eco-activities in western Cuba and diving with whale sharks.

While September sees the sweat-inducing high temperatures of the summer season start to reduce, it also marks the beginning of hurricane season with temperatures still sitting at an average of 90°F and high humidity levels. Despite the threat of dangerous weather patterns, there are some positives to traveling to Cuba in September. Peak season has well and truly dissipated by the end of the month and cities such as Havana, Varadero and Vinales are quieter and less expensive to stay in. But bring your umbrella.

Best for: cooking classes and museum visits

Hurricane season continues in October and while it’s still possible to enjoy spending time outside (especially if you’re travelling in the country’s west), this month’s weather lends itself to indoor activities such as cooking classes, café hopping and museum wandering. It’s also a great time to visit Cuba’s bustling cities if you’re a budding photographer as the intense sunlight and dramatic stormy conditions play with each other to create the most beautiful of contrasts (read: photos).

However, October is the rainiest month in Cuba so if you’re determined to explore (as you should be), come prepared with plenty of wet weather-appropriate clothing such as raincoats, water-resistant shoes and an umbrella. Humidity also remains high (so leave your hair straightener at home), along with the average temperatures.

Best for: festivals, café hopping and photography workshops

Phew, the epic rains of hurricane season are finally gone and in their place is Cuba’s dry season with average temperatures between 75°F-84°F and plenty of sunshine. While small showers are still possible here and there (except in Baracoa where thunderstorms can be expected until December), cities such as Havana and Holguin experience 10+ hours of sunlight on average and ocean temperatures of around 82°F.

Some of the most popular activities to do in Cuba in November include café hopping, dining out in each city’s best restaurants and attending one of Cuba’s many cultural festivals held during the month, including the Festival de Musica Contemporanea de La Habana and the Fiesta of the Red and Blue Majagua parties in the Ciego de Avila.

Best for: tobacco plantation tours, rum tastings and Christmas celebrations

The festive season descends upon Cuba in December, and so do the hoards of tourists from both North America and Europe in their bid to avoid their own country’s chilly weather. Yes, peak season is here but when you can expect comfortable temperatures of around 77°F with little to no chance of rainfall, who could blame those travelers for seeking out some sun?

Dry Season versus Wet Season

The dry season in Cuba runs from November to April, which makes all of those months a wonderful time to visit Cuba. May is great, too, because it’s just the beginning of the wet season and you still get many dry days. Hurricane season runs from June to November, so even though the rainy season ends in October, it's preferable not to  travel to Cuba  anytime during hurricane season.

Average Temperatures

• December to March are the coolest months, although they are by no means cold. The average daily temperature is 72 degrees Fahrenheit.
• April and May bring average temperatures around 78 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s hot enough to go to the beach, but it’s not so hot and humid that you’ll be changing your clothes three times a day.
• From June to September, average temperatures are in the 80s with highs in the 90s. These are also the months with the highest humidity and chance of rain .

The best time to visit Cuba is between October and April . This island has a wonderful Caribbean climate and a long season of loveliness, when the days are warm and sunny and there's very little rain, particularly in Havana and on the coast. The beaches along Cuba 's south coast get the best weather on the island.

Of all the months to go to Cuba , March and April are perhaps the best, when the days are longer and sunnier (on average seven hours of sunshine), not too hot and humid, and there's little rainfall. Average temperatures in March and April are around 27-29ºC in the daytime and a balmy 19-21ºC at night.

Even during Cuba's wettest months ( May to September ), there are plenty of sunny days and the heat and humidity rarely become unbearable.

Best Time to Visit Cuba: Month by Month Analysis

January in Cuba

January falls within high season in Cuba as the winter months on the Caribbean island provide dry weather and the perfect climate.

It is not the best time to visit if you want to avoid the crowds as many people gain vacations in January and the cruise ships carrying snowbirds from the US and Canada dock almost every day in Cuba during the winter months.

January does however provide some of the nicest days all year in Cuba with perfect 21°C (70°F) that makes it possible to explore the city of Havana or head to the beach without the fear of getting burnt.

You won’t even need to worry about packing your umbrella for a trip to Cuba in January as the skies are almost always clear and a perfect shade of blue.

January is the coldest month in Cuba but luckily you never have to worry about bringing a jacket to Cuba as this Caribbean island is always warm and sunny.

February in Cuba

We visited Cuba in February and can personally attest that it was an absolutely fabulous time to visit Cuba.

It is still high season in February in Cuba but as the Christmas holiday makers and cruisers have diminished, it is a quieter month to visit in comparison to January.

Temperatures can rise to 25°C (78°F) in February. As it is still dry season, we did not experience a single day of rain during our trip to Cuba in February.

The downside of visiting Cuba in the dry months is that the beautiful countryside of Viñales will be a brown/green color in comparison to a bright green vivid color you will see in the wet months in Cuba.

Personally, I prefer a brown/green color then getting absolutely drenched in rain but the choice is yours!

March in Cuba

Tourism starts to pick up in March in Cuba as people get more holidays. During March and particularly at Easter time is the busiest time for Cuban tourism.  

Weather wise it is still a fabulous time of year to visit as the days are warm but not scorching yet 28°C (82°F) and there is still very little rain in the sky.

Unlike somewhere like Cancun, where we recently enjoyed an epic Mexico road trip , Cuba has not yet picked up as a hot Spring Break location, partly because of some restrictions still being placed on American tourism to the Caribbean island.

It is expected in years to come that Cuban tourism during Spring Break will massively increase due to the close proximity to the United States and the cheap flights from Miami and other major international hubs in the US now offered.

Until this point, Cuba proves a great destination for an older traveler in March who wants to avoid the Spring Break kids.

April in Cuba

April is the final month before the harsh temperatures and rain of summer sets in. It is also the final month of high season before rainy season in Cuba.

If Easter falls in April in the year you are visiting, you can expect crowds to be still very high in April.

Weather is beginning to get quite hot in Cuba in April with high temperatures as much as 30°C (86°F). On the plus side, April is the least humid month to visit the Caribbean island.

As April is the final month before rainy season in Cuba, if you are particularly opposed to rain, we would recommend squeezing in a visit to Cuba before the rains set in in May.

The streets of Havana are dirt based and tend to get very muddy during rainy season in Cuba.

May in Cuba

May is the beginning of rainy season in Cuba. As the rains have not fully set in yet, it is a good time of year to get low season prices and predominately dry weather. 

May is however, the beginning of very hot weather in Cuba as the long hot summer sun sets in. You can expect temperatures as high as 31°C (88°F) in Cuba in May.

With a few showers, the plus side is that if you are planning on making a trip to the countryside of Cuba, it is starting to green up and look fabulous in photography.

As the weather in May can be quite unpredictable, we would highly recommend packing a umbrella and raincoat.

Due to export restrictions, you can’t expect to buy anything like you would at home in Cuba so it is always best practice to bring the necessities with you.

June in Cuba

June is the rainiest month in Cuba, so if you don’t like rain, June is not a good time to visit Cuba.

In June, Cuba receives an average of 80 mm of precipitation throughout the month. It is absolutely essential to bring a rain jacket and umbrella if you plan to travel to Cuba in June.

As would be expected June is also an extremely hot time to visit Cuba with temperatures soaring as high as 32 °C (90°F).

The rain and heat tends to ward off the crowds at this time of year so if you are looking for the best prices on flights and accommodation this is a good time of year to visit.

If you plan to visit in June, make sure that your accommodation has air conditioning. You will probably want to retreat off the streets of Havana or Trinidad during the hottest part of the day so having a working air conditioning console is absolutely essential.

July in Cuba

July continues Cuba’s rainy season. 

Rainy season is Cuba is different to rain in other places in the world. It is hard and torrential but lasts less time meaning you need to run for cover but will be able to get back out and about sightseeing in no time.

The beach of Varadero is a popular option for holidaymakers to Cuba in July as the hot weather can make meandering the streets of Havana particularly uncomfortable during the day.

The temperature in July stays the same or marginally hotter than the month of June.

August in Cuba

Cuba is still hot and rainy in August. Bad humidity tends to add to the heat in Cuba in August meaning that Cuba can feel rather a lot like a sauna in August.

if you plan to visit Havana, you will need to plan your sightseeing for the early mornings and late evenings. Most people choose to go to the beaches rather than the cities in Cuba during August.

As August receives some of the fewest visitors, you can expect low season prices on flights and accommodation.

As Cuba is a communist country and business owners are required to give hefty fees back to the government in order to operate, you sadly won’t see the same discounted prices on accommodation, food and retail as you would elsewhere in the world.

September in Cuba

September is the start of the worst of Hurricane season in Cuba. Due to the possibility of cyclone activity in Cuba in September, it is the month with the fewest visitors to Cuba.

On the plus side, hurricanes only hit Cuba on average once every 4 years so your chance of getting caught within a hurricane is incredibly low.

During September, you can take advantage of the cheapest prices in Cuba.

September is a little less hot and rainy than June with an average of 13 days of rain throughout the months and 70 mm of precipitation. Keep in mind you will still need a umbrella in Cuba in September.

October in Cuba

October is the second month of potentially bad hurricanes in Cuba.

As mentioned above, these are incredibly rare making October one of the best times to visit Cuba as temperatures start to fall and crowds are lower.

Temperatures have fallen to around 28 °C (83°F) in October making it a more pleasant time to visit Cuba and meander the streets of Havana during the middle of the day.

There is still a good chance of rain in October so pack your rain essentials with you.

November in Cuba

November is your last chance to get into Cuba before the crowds of holidaymakers make their way there in December.

November is a nice time to visit Cuba for a mix of low season prices and sunshine days.

Although there will be a few rainy days here and there, November brings perfect weather to Cuba with a average temperature of 24°C (75°F).

If you want to escape the harsh weather that has begin to set on some part of the US, Canada and Europe at this time of year and still enjoy reasonable prices, this is the best time to visit Cuba.

December in Cuba

Due to the Christmas vacation and the cold weather in most places around the world, December is absolutely peak time in Cuba.

Due to the crowds looking for a holiday, it will be increasingly difficult to snag a good deal on a flight or accommodation in Cuba during December. You will also be battling the crowds on the streets of Havana and Trinidad.

It is not all bad news if you only have this time of year up your sleeve, as temperatures are very mild and the streets of Havana are absolutely alive with people (which adds to the atmosphere) making it the best time to visit Cuba for some people.

What to Bring to Cuba? Cuba Travel Essentials

• BRING:  Travel Insurance. Upon entering Cuba, my Dad was asked to show proof of insurance. I didn’t know this before visiting but the immigration officer informed us that you would be denied access to Cuba without proof of insurance.
• BRING:  Travel Information. As there is little wifi in Cuba, it is advisable to bring with you notes or a guidebook of all the awesome things there are to do. We would recommend bringing with you a copy of the  Lonely Guide to Cuba  with you to Cuba unless you are very organised and manage to plan every restaurant and activity in advance. 
• DON’T BRING:  Your drone. Sadly, drones are not allowed in Cuba at this stage. If you bring your drone into Cuba, it will be temporarily held at the airport. You will also be required to pay a fine to get it back.

Cuba has well-defined high and low seasons for travel, which correspond with the distinct wet and dry seasons this Caribbean island enjoys. Drier weather and sunnier skies see the country swell with visitors during the festive season around Christmas. The rainy summer months, sometimes oppressively hot , see resorts and beaches empty out significantly.

Even if you visit during the height of the high travel season, Cuba isn’t a Caribbean island that feels overrun with travelers by any means. You’ll notice attractions are busier and prices higher, but no need to write off a trip during this season.

If anything, delay your travels until after New Year celebrations wind down – even January feels calmer here after all the Cuban Americans visiting their families head home.

Hurricane Season in Cuba

The low season of travel in Cuba coincides with hurricane season in the Caribbean. While hurricane season is totally unpredictable, it officially lasts from June 1st through November 30th each year, peaking in September and October.

Hurricanes are rare, but hurricane season is universally a wetter, muggier time in Cuba, with passing rain storms almost daily and higher temperatures making air conditioning feel like a must. Cities in historically hotter eastern Cuba, like Santiago de Cuba , experience average high temperatures that reach into the 90s (32 ° C and more).

Depending on the travel experiences you’re looking to enjoy on your Cuba itinerary , choosing when to visit Cuba will vary significantly. These are some of the things many travelers will want to consider before scheduling their trips to Cuba (and some of the best things to do in Cuba while visiting).

Best Time To Visit Cuba for Smaller Crowds

Contrary to some over-built Caribbean islands, Cuba isn’t a destination that ever feels too crowded. However, traveler numbers in Cuba are lowest during the summer months when hot temperatures, more frequent storms, and the Atlantic hurricane season deter a lot of travelers from planning a visit during this season.

For a good mix of nicer weather and fewer crowds, visit during the spring season, from April through June. Resorts will have largely emptied out, and skies are sunnier as the height of the rainy season will have yet to begin.

Best Time To Visit Cuba’s Beaches

There’s no wrong time to enjoy Cuba’s most beautiful beaches . If you’re after a beach vacation in Cuba, there’s no better time than December through April or May, when skies are the sunniest and humidity the lowest. Seas are generally calm during these months as well.

Locals will tell you that there’s no time like the summer to visit the beach – in fact, Cubans almost exclusively head to the beach only during the summer, especially those escaping Havana for Playas del Este . However, the summertime is when most resorts in Cuba empty out, meaning visitors can score huge deals on resorts and hotels during this time.

Best Time To Visit Cuba for Diving

If you’re traveling to Cuba with a mind to explore the reefs, wrecks, and myriad wonders below the waves, travel during the driest time of the year – December through April – for the best underwater visibility and calmest currents. While prices for diving excursions will also be the highest during this season, you’ll have to best experience possible.

Best Time To Visit Havana

Havana is fantastic any time of the year. Parts of the city can feel a bit crowded during the highest of travel season, which corresponds with the festive season during December and the first days of January. However, even during this busy season, the city is never too overrun with travelers.

If you’re planning to exclusively visit Havana, the high season from January through March and the shoulder season months of April, May, and June make a fantastic time to enjoy the city . Good weather, particularly amenable to a city break-type vacation, makes this first half of the year our favorite time to enjoy Havana.

Havana is a popular destination for group travel, especially in the fall shoulder season of October and November. This is true for backpackers and for group travel for people over 30 , so prices for hotels in Havana start to rise during this time more than they will for beach resorts, for example.

Month-by-Month Cuba Travel Breakdown

After the festive season of Christmas and New Year’s – the very height of Cuba’s busy travel season – winds down after the first week of January, there’s a brief lull in new arrivals to the island. However, resorts remain mostly full, and prices stay relatively high around the island.

While January is considered Cuba’s dry season and “winter,” this is still very much a Caribbean island – average temperatures fall within the mid-70s (around 24°C), and plenty of sun keeps it hot throughout the day. No need to worry about storms or rain – January is historically quite dry.

February remains the height of travel season in Cuba, with resorts full and busy and beaches packed with travelers escaping winters back home. February has gorgeous weather, with lots of sun and relatively cooler temperatures, and very little rain. In fact, February is historically the driest month of the year, making it the best time to visit Cuba for perfect beach weather.

March mirrors both January and February weather and traveler numbers in Cuba. If you aren’t deterred by higher prices and fuller resorts and beaches, it’s one of the best times to visit Cuba, with warm yet refreshing temperatures and sunny skies.

Around mid-April, visitor numbers begin to decrease as travelers from cooler climates start to head home to enjoy springtime. Temperatures remain refreshing but warm, rain storms are still few and far between, and prices will start to drop towards the middle to the end of the month, though slowly.

All in all, April is a fantastic time to enjoy a visit to Cuba, especially if you’re looking for that sweet spot of good weather, lower prices, and fewer visitors.

While temperatures begin to rise in May, Cuba is still relatively refreshing and prices are lower. Rain storms start to increase in frequency as the rainy season begins in May, but this month is still a fantastic time to enjoy a visit to Cuba, with decent weather, lower prices, and fewer visitors.

The month of June and the start of summer in Cuba start to see temperatures rising quickly. With the added humidity of a rainy season in full swing and rising average precipitation levels, it is understandably not the best time to visit Cuba, though lower prices and fewer visitors make it more attractive for travelers looking for a bargain.

July is one of the hottest – and rainiest – months of the year in Cuba, with temps usually in the mid-80s (around 29°C), and frequent though quickly-passing rain storms are common. Resorts in Cuba will be nearly empty and generally offer excellent deals and packages to tempt visitors, making this a great time for a luxury stay on a budget.

July also marks the carnival celebrations in Santiago de Cuba , which are by far Cuba’s most festive and important carnival celebrations. Expect everything from music and dance performances to parades and parties. Attending carnival in Santiago de Cuba is an incredible way to experience an important part of Cuban culture and history first-hand.

Like July, August temperatures in Cuba are at their highest, and storms are just as frequent. Keep in mind that Caribbean rainstorms tend to be quickly passing, meaning that if you don’t mind ducking inside for an hour, you’ll usually be able to enjoy the rest of the day rain-free, and with far fewer other tourists here than you’d experience during the high season.

While temperatures start to drop slightly in Cuba in September, it’s also historically the rainiest month of the year in Cuba – by far. September and October are the height of the Atlantic hurricane season, so make sure to book travel insurance for Cuba that covers natural disasters like hurricanes should you need to reschedule your trip.

Temperatures continue to cool in October, and precipitation levels begin to drop quickly as the rainy season ends and the dry season begins. October marks the beginning of a nice shoulder season for travel in Cuba, so if you’re willing to risk having some of your plans rained out, you’ll enjoy lower visitor numbers and less oppressive temperatures.

November makes the end of the hurricane season in Cuba, with rain storms becoming far less frequent and temperatures turning from hot to perfectly pleasant as skies stay beautiful. With nice weather and far fewer visitors in November than in December, this month is considered by some to be the best time to visit Cuba.

Clear skies, little to no precipitation, and dropping humidity make December one of the nicest months for weather in Cuba. Were it not for the busyness of the Christmas and New Year’s season in Cuba, it’d be one of my top recommendations for when to go to Cuba.

December also marks the Havana Film Festival , which is considered “one of the most important events in the cinematic calendar” for Latin American filmmakers and actors. This is one of our favorite events of the year in Cuba – there are a ton of local and international movies that screen in theaters around the city, and super-cheap tickets make it accessible for locals and visitors alike.

Festive Season in Cuba

The final two weeks of December are by far the busiest in Cuba, with large numbers of travelers visiting the country. Many Cuban Americans visit family during this time, and the country feels busy and exciting.

Prices for everything are higher than ever. It’s a fun time to visit, but I generally don’t recommend it for most visitors because many things close while others get busy – opt for the quieter January instead!

Average temperatures in Cuba vary little. Considering humidity, temperatures feel hot for most of the year with a fair chance of precipitation about half of the year. The area is less temperate than some — in the 25th percentile for pleasant weather — compared to tourist destinations worldwide. Weeks with ideal weather are listed above . If you’re looking for the very warmest time to visit Cuba, the hottest months are July, August, and then September. See average monthly temperatures below. The warmest time of year is generally late July where highs are regularly around 90.8°F (32.7°C) with temperatures rarely dropping below 75.7°F (24.3°C) at night.

The way we experience weather isn’t all about temperature. Higher temperatures affect us much more at higher humidity, and colder temperatures feel piercing with high winds. Our perceived temperatures factor in humidity and wind chill to better represent how hot or cold the day feels to a person.

Daily highs (averaged for the month) usually give the best indication of the weather. A significantly lower mean and low generally just means it gets colder at night.

If dry weather is what you’re after, the months with the lowest chance of significant precipitation in Cuba are January, March, and then February. Note that we define “significant precipitation” as .1 inches or more in this section. The lowest chance of rain or snow occurs around early January. For example, on the week of January 1st there are no days of precipitation on average. By contrast, it’s most likely to rain or snow in late October with an average of 2 days of significant precipitation the week of October 22nd.

Cuba has some very humid months, and above average humidity throughout the year. The least humid month is March (61.1% relative humidity), and the most humid month is October (73.6%).

Wind in Cuba is usually calm . The windiest month is March, followed by February and April. March’s average wind speed of around 7.8 knots (8.9 MPH or 14.4 KPH) is considered “a gentle breeze.” Maximum sustained winds (the highest speed for the day lasting more than a few moments) are at their highest in early March where average top sustained speeds reach 13.4 knots, which is considered a moderate breeze.

The Busiest and Least Crowded Months

The busiest month for tourism in Cuba is January, followed by December and February. Prices for hotels and flights will be most expensive during these months, though you can save if you purchase well in advance. Tourists are unlikely to visit Cuba in June. Those willing to visit at these times will likely find it the least expensive month.

Humidity and temperatures combine to make this season feel warm. Highs range from 88.2°F (31.2°C) and 82.7°F (28.2°C) with warmer temperatures in the later months. Rain is rare with 2 to 6 days of significant precipitation per month. Spring is the second busiest for tourism, which makes it a good time for those looking for things to do.

Summer (June through August)

The middle-year months have very comfortable weather with high temperatures that are quite warm. These months see the most precipitation with 6 to 7 days of precipitation per month. June – August is the slowest season for tourism in Cuba, so lodging and other accommodations may cost less than usual.

Fall (September through November)

Fall daily highs range from 90°F (32.2°C) and 82.8°F (28.2°C), which will feel very nice given the humidity and wind. It rains or snows a significant amount: 3 to 7 days per month. Tourism is fairly slow during these months due to the weather, so hotels may be lower priced.

Winter (December through February)

Weather is perfect this time of year in Cuba to be enjoyable for warm weather travelers. The average high during this season is between 83.8°F (28.8°C) and 81.4°F (27.4°C). On average, it rains or snows a smalll amount: 2 to 3 times per month. These times of year are the busiest with tourists.

Cuba is known for its warm tropical climate that makes the Island a great vacation destination. The warm and humid weather is due to its location on the northern edge of the tropics. If you want to know the most important information about the weather in Cuba and which is the best time to visit the country, keep reading the article to learn the details!

The country counts with approximately 330 sunny days in the year and the summer months are particularly hot and moist. The best season for going on round trips is the less warm and dry winter months. During winter there are relative cold periods, especially in the north coast of western Cuba. It’s also quite important to pay attention to the high levels of UV radiation all year round.

Mostly the temperatures are in the range of pleasant to really high. According to the subtropical climate zone, also the humidity is “high” to “very high”. In the annual average, temperature is around 25° C with humidity over 70%. In the Southeast of the island they are usually a bit higher and in Santiago de Cuba few degrees warmer than in Havana. Rain is more recurrent in the extreme southeast (in the mountains around Santiago and in Baracoa) than in the rest of the country. The result of the increased precipitation in these regions is a particularly strong tropical flora.

Temperatures & humidity: »mucho calor!«

While in Northern countries winters are widely considered to be the less pleasant season, in Cuba it is the summer. Especially during the months of May to October it is often intolerable hot and humid. The thermometer is practically never under 30 during the day, often increasing up to 35 degrees. At least in the cities it gets extremely hot, but at night it is a little cool. During this time the humidity is mostly in a range from 90 to 95%, so people suffer under the heat. Almost every day it is said: »mucho calor« – what a heat! 

The Cuban winter is nicely warm and also the humidity is less than in the summer. Cooler days come especially in December and January, but sometimes also in February. However, the cold periods are usually limited to a few days. If a cold front comes (see below), the thermometer can get to 15 degrees during the day and at night reach a single-digit range.

Water temperature

Thinking to go for a swim and enjoy Cuban beaches? We have good news for you: The water temperature is warm all year round, it does not fall below 24 and reaches in the peak even 29 degrees. But on a cold winter day, bathing - more precisely, leaving the water - can be quite uncomfortable. If you have no luck in winter and catch a cold front, probably you can hardly swim for ten days at a time (see cold front). Since the winters are generally too cold for Cubans, they visit the beaches almost exclusively in summer.

On the island, you have to be informed of the greatest bathing spots. The north coast borders the Atlantic Ocean in western Cuba, where the warm water from the Gulf of Mexico flows through the Florida Strait towards Europe. On the south coast is the Caribbean Sea, which is not only calmer, but also a little warmer.

The best time to visit Cuba

Attending to the outlined climatic conditions, the winter months are better for round trips and the summer months for beach vacations. Of course these trips are also possible in the summer, but they can be very exhausting, because of the high temperatures and the humidity, so loss of sweat is almost inevitable. In addition, it rains more often in summer because it is the rainy season and also the strong sun should be considered.

In summer the exposure to exceptionally high levels of UV radiation has to be expected. The northern solstice runs pretty much exactly through Havana. The UV index for Cuba shows values up to 12. According to the definition of the World Health Organization, values over 11 can be described as extreme. So you should definitely think about sufficient sun protection, with light-colored types. In this sense children are particularly at risk.

Frente Frio: dogs are protected from the cold

The coldest months are January and February: during these months the average temperature is a pleasant 22° C. In addition there is a dry season in winter. The temperatures can also fall quite strongly (see cold front). It must be expected, since it regularly happens, that it gets too cold for swimming - especially on the north coast.

There is no such thing as the best vacation time when traveling to Cuba. Depending on the travel concept and physical ability, the country is always easy to travel to. 

The rain season in Cuba

The rainy season is the period of the warm summer months of May until the end of October. During this period precipitation occurs. It rains almost every day, especially in the afternoons after the hot midday hours (tropical zenith rain). These turn out to be short and heavy rain, to very heavy rain. If the rainstorms last long enough, they bring freshness. Floods regularly happen if it rains for several days, but that is quite rare. Attending to the statistics, there are more rainy days in October.

The hurricane season in Cuba

The hurricane season in the Caribbean is from August until November, after the sea water and the air layers have heated up sufficiently. The storms feed through the energy of the sea and earth rotation helps create a vortex that grows stronger as long as conditions permit it. Severe cyclones can expand for hundreds of kilometers and remain over the ocean for up to two weeks. If they hit land, they often cause catastrophic damage in thousands of square kilometers. The devastation is a result of the high wind speeds and the giant amount of rain that can lead to meter-high floods. According to their strength, the cyclones are on a scale categorized in grades from 1 to 5. The highest category 5 counts as a hurricane when the wind speed reaches over 280 km / h.

The good news is that these fatal storms only happen every few years. Historically, the most dangerous months in Cuba were October (40 registered hurricanes), September (34), August (17) and November (10). The last major hurricane hit the country in September 2017. Cyclone [120] Irma (Category 5) devastated some Cayos and flooded parts of Havana, among other damages. There were ten deaths across the country, seven of them in Havana.

What if there was a hurricane?

The formation of tropical storms is usually well monitored, so threatened areas are evacuated in time. The people that stay in safe buildings are generally not in danger. However, you can expect power outages lasting for days (larger hotels have emergency power generators), restrictions in telecommunications and blocked roads. Airports can be so badly damaged that air traffic must be suspended.

The restoration of infrastructure in tourist regions is a priority. Overall, Cuban crisis management is typical in comparison to neighboring countries.

If there is a hurricane before you start your trip, the organizers often allow free rebooking or cancellation. When the local situation is particularly dramatic, holidaymakers can cancel package trips due to significant bad climatological conditions. For package tours, the organizers are required to fly out vacationers immediately.

Cold front in the Caribbean: »Frente Frio«

Tour operators like to advertise that in Cuba, during the whole year, the weather is perfect for dipping into the ocean. In fact, the tropical climate ensures that it hardly ever gets cold on the island. But only for some periods, because in winter there are regularly cool days. Cubans refer to the cold air coming from the north as »Frente Frio« - that is a cold front. They occur practically every winter, even several times. If you are unlucky, you can experience a cold front lasting over a week in the time from December to January.

If a cold front comes, a cool wind often blows on the coast. Especially on the western north coast, so around Varadero or Havana, it is hardly impossible to bathe, because that's where the temperatures fall the most.  At night the thermometer can go below 10 degrees.

It usually stays warmer in the southwest of the island. If you want a good weather for swimming during winter, better stay in the south or southeast - for example in Guardalavaca - because the cold north winds rarely touch these areas.

Also, during round trips, the cold front has an effect on public life. The typical heat drives people outdoors and is an important part of life; however cities seem to be deserted during a cold front. Cubans are sensitive to chilly weather and if it gets cold, they prefer to stay in their homes. If the thermometer drops below 20 degrees, it is common that already thick jackets, hats or even gloves are unpacked.

Time difference & times of day

Cuba has the same time zone on the entire national territory (CET minus 6 hours). The time difference is minus six hours. Cuba represents winter and summer time according to the American data. It causes a deviation in March and at the end of October as the time change takes place one week later.

The longest days are in June with a good 13 hours (7 until 8:30 p.m.), the shortest in December with just under 11 hours (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.). So in winter it will be a good two hours earlier before the dark.

Havana's cultural calendar is full of visit-worthy events every month, with the more prestigious festivals taking place between October and April.

Jazz or ballet? Religious processions or fiery festivals? Cheap hotel deals or cool temperatures? You'll be able to find something to fit your taste and budget throughout the year.

Lapped by the choppy waters of the Straits of Florida, Havana is always warm, but it hits a climatic peak during the northern hemisphere winter when the weather is dry and not too humid. This seasonal guide can help you plan the best time for your visit to Havana . 

November to March and July to August are the best times for beaches

Havana’s high season stretches from November to March, when hordes of tourists from Europe and Canada flee the snow and freezing temperatures and decamp to Cuba . While many head to the all-inclusive resorts that line the north coast, a good proportion spend at least part of their time in Havana.

More than a quarter of Havana’s winter tourists come from Canada, and they start arriving in early to mid-November. Prices for flights, hotels and packages start going up from then and nudge even higher (as much as 25%) over Christmas and New Year, making this the most expensive time to visit.

As the rainy season draws to a close, temperatures become more bearable in November, and acclimatized runners line up for Havana’s annual marathon. 

December brings one of Havana's biggest international festivals, Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano (dedicated to film), and its most devotional religious procession (dedicated to San Lázaro).

Christmas celebrations have been reignited in the last two decades after practically dying out during the early years of the Revolution.

The busiest month in terms of tourist numbers is January, closely followed by February and March, when the weather is dry but not too hot and tempered by the occasional frente frio (cold front). January is Havana’s coolest month, with average daily temperatures of around 22ºC (72ºF).

Expect some shortages during this busy time, particularly in the availability of rental cars. Sharp-eyed travelers visiting in March should look out for migratory birds that congregate in some of the city's large green spaces , including Parque Lenin and the Jardín Botánico Nacional .

Crowds aside, January to March is the perfect time to visit the beaches of Playas del Este and partake in a range of water activities. It’s also the conclusion of Cuban baseball’s National Series and a potentially exciting time for fans of Havana’s Industriales team.

The mini high season of July and August is when Cubans go on vacation. This two-month-long summer spike affects the country’s cheaper hotels and rural campismos (affordable rustic accommodations) but has less of an impact in Havana, except during the city’s annual carnival in August. Scorching temperatures are guaranteed – August is the city’s hottest month.

The shoulder season months of April and October have fewer visitors

Foreign visitors begin tailing off in April, and prices start to fall after Easter. Despite waning tourist numbers, the weather remains good; April is the second-driest month, the sunniest and the least humid. 

With this good weather and less-crowded beaches, April is a good time for fishing in the Gulf Stream and kitesurfing at Tarará.

Conversely, October can be stormy, with oppressive humidity and persistent rain to dampen tourist numbers. However, early fall delivers some excellent cultural annual events.

The internationally acclaimed theater and ballet festivals – Festival de Teatro de la Habana and Festival Internacional de Ballet de la Habana – are both worth planning a trip around.

May, June and September are the best months for budget travelers

Low season is prime time for budget travelers, crowd-avoiders and those not averse to getting a little wet. Bear in mind that Havana’s showers – even in the June to November rainy season – are usually short and heavy, with the rain rarely lasting all day.

Ranking as one of the cheapest months, May marks a sweet spot between the crowded winter season and the domestic barrage of summer. It also offers a potential weather window. 

June marks the start of hurricane season, but remember that the Caribbean hurricane season usually starts with a whimper as opposed to a bang.

Big storms are an exception rather than a rule in June, although it’s the wettest month for all-around rainfall. It is also the height of mango season – reason enough to visit! September is peak hurricane season in Cuba, when the outside chance of a “big one” (usually every four to five years) keeps many vacationers at bay. 

While there are not a ton of quirky festivals to savor during the off-season, Havana never lacks life, and all the best museums and sights remain open year-round.

Accommodations-wise, you’ll pay cheaper rates and find better availability in the low season. Similarly, travelers will enjoy shorter lines, less crowded beaches and a quieter, slicker airport experience.

When you’re considering visiting Cuba you’ll usually have a little leeway at least as to when you can come, because, it’s true, there are better times of the year to visit Cuba.  And that means, of course, that there are not so good times to visit Cuba.  And so we’ll go through the different elements that go into the mix of figuring out the best time to visit Cuba.  And what you need to consider when selecting a time to visit Cuba.  There’s the weather, the cost of visiting Cuba, the availability of flights (which depend on the season), and outside factors.  Ready?

There are several things to consider when planning your trip to Cuba, many of which you’ll already have worked out because they’re the same as in other countries.  However.  A trip to Cuba is truly unique.  The geography, economic situation, and political climate mean that the considerations you need to take into account when planning your trip to Cuba are a little more complicated.   However.  It’s not difficult with a little planning. 

When is the Best Time to Travel to Cuba?  Weather

It’s hard to know where to start, but I’ll go with the weather first of all.  It’s not always obvious from afar but Cuba has two distinctly different seasons.  The wet season and the dry season.  The dry season is definitely the better time to visit Cuba from a weather perspective – unless you prefer high humidity, wet and hot temperatures.  However, you won’t be the only person traveling to Cuba during the dry season.  The dry season is the most popular time to travel to Cuba.  Most people will be more comfortable exploring Cuba during the dry season.

All about Cuba’s Dry Season

As this is the time when most visitors come to Cuba, here are some of the details to know about Cuba’s dry season.

When is the dry season in Cuba?

Cuba’s dry season is from November to April .  And yes, it’s the busiest time to travel to Cuba.  This is Cuba’s high season.  And while it means it’s the most expensive time to travel to Cuba, it also means also that there are the most options available for flights to Cuba.

The most popular months to visit Cuba during the dry season are January, February, and March.

What’s the rainfall in Cuba’s dry season?

Cuba averages 25 to 50 millimeters (1 – 2 inches) of rain a month during the dry season, but weather patterns change and they can vary dramatically depending on where you are in Cuba.  Always check the local forecast.

You’ll get temperatures from the mid-20s Celsius to the low 30’s (mid-70s to mid 80’s Fahrenheit)

Marine life in Cuba’s dry season

It’s generally cheaper to travel to Cuba during the wet season, but there is also a lot less choice –of flights specifically, so you might find it harder to get here.  However, the schedule for Viazul buses tends to be exactly the same all year round.

Cuba’s wet months are June, September, and October.  It’s hot, wet, and humid during these months.  Cuba gets more than 70% of its rainfall between May and October.  It’s not cold though.  Well, not to most folks. The weather tends to get more humid and wetter later in the summer as we head toward hurricane season.

You can expect to see from 120 mm (4.7 inches) to 177 mm (7 inches) of rain a month during Cuba’s rainy season.  

What are the average temperatures in Cuba’s Wet Season?

The months of the wet season in Cuba see temperatures during the day in the high 20s Celsius to mid-30s.  However, it’s usually very humid and wet, so it feels worse.

Will there be mosquitoes during Cuba’s wet season?

Oh yes.  This is prime mosquito breeding season.  While there are usually fewer mosquitoes at the beach once you head into the cities or the mountains then you’ll definitely encounter them.  Come prepared.  Even if you’ve booked air-conditioned rooms, plan for fuel shortages bring a mosquito net, and buy spray.  You will be unlikely to buy any on the island unless you spend a LOT.

Cheapest Time to Travel to Cuba

It is usually cheapest to travel to Cuba during the wet season – from May to October.  While the costs on the island tend to be static (fuel shortages and inflation aside), flights to Cuba tend to be cheaper at this time as it is the slower time of year for tourists.  You are likely to find that casa particulars and hotels are cheaper then too.

Specifically looking at the months of May, June, and September are when it’s cheapest to get to Cuba.

Cuba’s schools take their summer break in July and August, so you will see more local tourists at this time.  However, this is also the hottest time to visit Cuba.
