Windstar Knows the Way to the Caribbean

IF YOU COULD DESIGN THE PERFECT ISLAND itinerary it would look a lot like these. Ports of call would include tiny towns and hidden harbors known only to private yachts and small ships like ours. Schedules would allow for dropping the Watersports Platform in turquoise bays and raising sails on the way to your next island rendezvous. And the laid-back island vibe would continue on board with a mouthwatering Signature Onboard Barbecue by the pool. Best of all, on every cruise there would be one day that was even more special than the rest, when you land on a secluded beach for Windstar’s Signature Beach Party, elaborate buffet and watersports included.

10 of the best small-ship Caribbean cruises to avoid the crowds

Give the biggest ships a miss for unspoilt islands, empty white-sand beaches and a more personalised service — these are the smaller cruises to book now.

Scenic Eclipse is equipped with kayaks, Zodiacs, ebikes and paddleboards — and two helicopters

I f you dream of deserted beaches and castaway islands, a Caribbean cruise can be a shock to the system. On my first cruise from Florida to Puerto Rico, my colossal ship would often dock alongside at least two other equally giant vessels, dwarfing local towns crowded with disembarking passengers. I’ve since returned on smaller ships to destinations including the British Virgin Islands and the Grenadines and the difference is startling, with more unusual ports, quiet local villages to explore and almost-empty beaches. True, the ships may not come with water slides and mini golf, but you can usually expect top-notch food and attentive service rather than buffet queues and scrambles for sunloungers. These are some of the best small-ship Caribbean cruises.

1. SeaDream Yacht Club

Gustavia in St Barts, a port of call for Sea Dream cruises

Best for feeling like you’re on a yacht Pretend you’re a billionaire aboard your very own yacht by booking a SeaDream Yacht Club cruise. Sharing space with just over 100 guests, you can expect serious pampering, with alfresco movies, double Balinese sunbeds and all kinds of toys available to borrow, from jet skis to bikes for impromptu rides ashore. You’ll also visit all the ports the bigger ships miss, from the idyllic Terre-de-Haut in Guadeloupe to pretty Gustavia in St Barts , where high-end restaurants and boutiques cater to the island’s usual celebrity clientele.

2. Silversea

The focus is on wellness in the Otium spa aboard Silversea’s Silver Dawn

Best for luxury Silversea’s Silver Dawn may welcome nearly 600 passengers on board but it’s still small fry when it comes to the mammoth cities-on-water offered by most Caribbean cruise lines. The difference is noticeable when it comes to on-board service, with almost one crew member per guest and a lavish all-inclusive package that includes 24-hour room service, a butler in every suite, champagne throughout the ship and one shore excursion per port per day. Silversea will even send a chauffeur-driven car to bring you to the airport from your home.

3. emerald cruises.

Emerald Sakara calls at some of the Caribbean’s least-visited islands

Best for smaller ports Bigger is definitely not better when it comes to squeezing into some of the Caribbean’s smallest and most picturesque ports. Emerald Cruises’ sleek 110m-long Sakara holds just 100 guests (and 76 crew) so its Eastern Caribbean voyage can dock at some of the region’s least-visited islands. Mayreau Island is just one and a half square miles, has no proper roads and just a single unnamed village, but plenty of powder-soft white beaches you’re likely to have all to yourself. Be sure to visit Salt Whistle Bay, where the bath-warm Caribbean is separated from the churning Atlantic by a slim strip of sand.

4. Seabourn

Martinique is among the islands you’ll visit aboard Seabourn Venture

Best for longer voyages Launched in July 2022, Seabourn’s luxe, purpose-built expedition ship Seabourn Venture is normally found in the Antarctic or the Amazon. However, a handful of cruises on this 132-cabin ship visit some of the Caribbean’s most exclusive spots including glamorous, volcanic Martinique and the BVI’s beautiful Jost Van Dyke, named after a Dutch pirate. The ship continues on to far-flung locations including Rio de Janeiro and the Amazon basin for a real once-in-a-lifetime holiday. For a simpler round trip from Barbados , Seabourn’s bigger Ovation still welcomes only 600 passengers and feels equally exclusive with a Dr Andrew Weil spa, gourmet in-suite dining included and a champagne and caviar beach party to up the glamour stakes.

5. Hurtigruten

Hurtigruten’s MS Fram is a purpose-built expedition ship

Best for included shore excursions Group activities and trips in port can hike the cost of even the most budget-friendly cruise. Purpose-built expedition ship MS Fram from Hurtigruten has just 119 cabins yet doesn’t skimp on the extras with several shore excursions included on its Caribbean itineraries — almost unheard of on most cruise lines. These include a scenic drive round St Lucia ’s rainforest-wrapped mountains and a tour of diving paradise Bonaire that includes a chance to sample the local cactus liqueur. The ship spends summer in the Arctic and winter in Antarctica, so you’ll need to act fast to book the Caribbean voyages on offer between seasons.

• Best cruise lines for solo travellers • Best family-friendly cruises

6. Star Clippers

The five-masted Royal Clipper accommodates just 227 passengers

Best for cruise and stay Make the most of a holiday in paradise by staying as long as possible. Banish the jet lag with seven lazy days poolside in Barbados then board the Royal Clipper, a five-masted ship that resembles a traditional tall ship and holds just 227 passengers. The billowing sails will add a real sense of nautical romance to your voyage to ports including St George’s in Grenada , Tobago Cays in the Grenadines and Kingstown in St Vincent, home to one of the oldest botanical gardens in the western hemisphere.

7. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Guests on Seven Seas Navigator benefit from a generous all-inclusive package

Best for all-inclusive You’ll want for nothing on an ultra-luxurious Regent Seven Seas Cruise which has one of the most generous all-inclusive packages on the high seas. Forget lukewarm buffets and think 24-hour room service, unlimited drinks, free minibar, all-suite accommodation, wi-fi, an extensive lecture programme and unlimited shore excursions. Four of the ships sail to the Caribbean — opt for Navigator which is the smallest with under 500 passengers and offers itineraries that take in the chic beaches of St Barts, Bonaire’s colourful capital Kralendijk and postcard-perfect Martinique.

8. Scenic Ocean Cruises

Guests on Scenic Eclipse can get a bird’s-eye view of the Caribbean from one of the ship’s helicopters

Best for gadgets Built to navigate Arctic waters, Scenic Eclipse is as high-tech as it comes below deck, but the 228 passengers don’t miss out on state-of-the-art trappings either. The ship comes equipped with all you’ll need to explore Caribbean ports, with kayaks, Zodiacs, e-bikes and paddleboards. Fancy a bird’s-eye view of the brilliant blue waters below? Eclipse has two helicopters on board to give guests a real bucket-list experience.

Mayreau Island is one of the destinations you’ll visit on Le Ponant

Best for an ultra-exclusive experience Ponant offers the most intimate cruise of all on their iconic, three-masted yacht Le Ponant, which holds just 32 guests. It was the first sailing ship in the world to be awarded the Relais & Châteaux label in 2023, and its regular seven-night Caribbean itinerary includes a host of shore excursions. Visit a turtle sanctuary in Bequia, try traditional dance lessons on Mayreau Island or join a guided tour with a local naturalist in the Tobago Cays, known for turtles, turquoise waters and kaleidoscopic coral reefs.

10. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Evrima brings a touch of Ritz-Carlton luxury to the Caribbean

Best for shorter cruises The very first yacht from the Ritz-Carlton hotel chain launched in 2022 to bring its high-end service and fine dining to the seas. Two more yachts are due to follow before 2025 but the company’s Evrima will remain its smallest, with fewer than 300 passengers. This has regular sailings in the Caribbean starting at just four nights for those looking for a quick escape. Offering a round trip from San Juan, it minimises sailing time with a stop each day in the British Virgin Islands ’ Virgin Gorda, St Maarten and St John in the US Virgin Islands. Just enough time to wind down and top up the tan.

Exploring The Caribbean: A Comprehensive Guide to Small Ship Cruises

by Judith Eve | Jun 18, 2023 | Cruise Planning & Cruiser Lifestyle

small ship caribbean cruises 2023

The allure of the Caribbean is undeniable. Its white sandy beaches, vibrant cultures, historical richness, and turquoise waters create a paradise for travelers. If you’re seeking a more intimate, immersive experience in this tropical wonderland, small-ship cruising could be just the ticket. This comprehensive guide will take you through the ins and outs of small-ship cruises in the Caribbean, helping you plan an unforgettable journey.

Why Choose a Small-Ship Caribbean Cruise?

Small-ship cruises in the Caribbean offer unique advantages over their larger counterparts. With smaller guest numbers (usually between 50 to 200 passengers), they provide a more personal, relaxed atmosphere. The size of these vessels allows them to visit smaller, less crowded ports, providing a more authentic Caribbean experience. Plus, they often focus on local culture, history, and nature, offering in-depth shore excursions and expert-led lectures.

Choosing the Right Small-Ship Cruise Line

When planning your small-ship Caribbean cruise, it’s crucial to pick the right cruise line that suits your preferences and budget. Here are a few renowned options:

  • Windstar Cruises: Known for their impressive sailing yachts, Windstar offers intimate Caribbean cruises with unique itineraries, gourmet dining, and high-end service.
  • SeaDream Yacht Club: SeaDream's casual, yacht-style cruises focus on luxury and relaxation, featuring all-inclusive pricing, gourmet meals, and access to exclusive ports.
  • UnCruise Adventures: If you're an active traveler or nature enthusiast, UnCruise Adventures might be for you. They offer adventure-focused itineraries with activities like kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling.
  • Star Clippers: For a unique sailing experience on tall ships, consider Star Clippers. They provide a blend of traditional sailing and modern comfort.

Planning Your Small-Ship Caribbean Cruise Itinerary

The Caribbean is a vast region comprising numerous islands, each with its unique charm. Here are a few destinations that small-ship cruises can help you explore:

  • The Virgin Islands: Known for beautiful beaches, snorkeling, and sailing opportunities, the Virgin Islands offer a mix of natural beauty and rich history.
  • The Grenadines: This string of islands is ideal for those seeking unspoiled beauty. Visit the Tobago Cays Marine Park, hike in Union Island, or relax on the white sands of Mayreau.
  • St. Lucia: Famous for the Pitons, St. Lucia offers stunning natural beauty, with opportunities for hiking, bird-watching, and exploring the world's only drive-in volcano.
  • Dominica: Known as "the Nature Island," Dominica is a paradise for nature lovers with its waterfalls, hot springs, and lush rainforests.

What to Expect on Your Small-Ship Cruise

Onboard a small-ship Caribbean cruise, you can expect a laid-back atmosphere. Most small-ship cruise lines lean towards casual dress codes and flexible dining options. While entertainment is more low-key compared to larger cruise ships, there is a focus on enrichment activities. Expect expert-led lectures, cooking demonstrations, and cultural performances.

Packing for Your Small-Ship Caribbean Cruise

When packing for your cruise, consider the climate, onshore activities, and cruise line's dress code. Essentials include swimwear, beachwear, casual clothes, and a few smart-casual outfits for dinner. Don't forget sun protection, comfortable footwear for excursions, and any necessary gear for activities such as snorkeling or hiking.

The Advantage of the Off-Season

While the Caribbean is a year-round destination, small-ship cruises can offer unique benefits during the off-peak seasons. The summer and fall, outside the traditional high season of winter and spring, can provide fewer crowds, lower prices, and a more relaxed atmosphere. However, this is also the hurricane season, and while operators take utmost precautions, it's essential to be aware of potential changes in weather conditions.

The All-Inclusive Nature of Small-Ship Cruises

Many small-ship cruise lines offer all-inclusive pricing, covering accommodations, meals, and sometimes even excursions and alcohol. This all-inclusive nature can provide excellent value for money and allows you to enjoy your vacation without worrying about unexpected expenses. However, it's always crucial to check what's included and excluded in your cruise fare to avoid surprises.

Culinary Experiences on Small-Ship Cruises

Small-ship cruises in the Caribbean often place a significant emphasis on food. With fewer passengers onboard, chefs can focus on quality, offering gourmet dining experiences that feature local Caribbean ingredients and dishes. Some cruise lines also offer culinary-themed cruises, including cooking demonstrations, food-related shore excursions, and onboard culinary experts.

Sustainable and Responsible Cruising

With the growing awareness of sustainable tourism, many small-ship cruise lines in the Caribbean are committed to minimizing their environmental impact and contributing positively to local communities. They employ practices such as using eco-friendly amenities, reducing waste, supporting local businesses, and educating passengers about responsible tourism. When choosing your cruise line, you might want to consider their commitment to sustainability.

Preparing for Your Small-Ship Cruise

Before embarking on your cruise, take some time to research your destinations. Familiarize yourself with local customs, languages, and highlights. Also, make sure your travel documents are in order and that you have appropriate travel insurance.

On your small-ship cruise, remain open to new experiences. Be respectful of local cultures and environments, engage with fellow passengers and crew, and take every opportunity to soak in the beauty and vibrancy of the Caribbean.

Adventure and Exploration Activities

A distinguishing feature of small-ship cruises in the Caribbean is the focus on adventure and exploration activities. Depending on the itinerary, you may have opportunities for hiking in national parks, snorkeling in coral reefs, kayaking in marine reserves, or exploring historical sites. These activities offer enriching ways to experience the Caribbean's natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Health and Safety on Small-Ship Cruises

With the current global focus on health and safety, many small-ship cruise lines have implemented enhanced health protocols. These may include health screenings, increased sanitation measures, social distancing guidelines, and mask mandates. Some cruise lines also have onboard medical facilities and staff to address any health concerns.

Cultural Immersion Opportunities

One of the unique advantages of small-ship cruises is the opportunity for cultural immersion. This can take the form of local-led excursions, onboard lectures, cultural performances, and culinary experiences. By interacting with local communities and learning about their histories, traditions, and lifestyles, you'll gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Caribbean's diverse cultures.

Travel Insurance for Small-Ship Cruises

Travel insurance is a crucial consideration for any vacation, including small-ship cruises. Look for a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers trip cancellation, medical expenses, evacuation, and lost or delayed baggage. Also, consider coverage for specific circumstances like weather disruptions, which can be particularly relevant for Caribbean cruises.

The Joy of Slow Travel on Small-Ship Cruises

Finally, one of the beauties of a small-ship cruise in the Caribbean is the pace. Without the rush and crowds of larger ships, you can truly savor each moment, whether that's a breathtaking sunset, a leisurely meal, or a fascinating conversation with a local guide. This slow travel approach allows you to connect more deeply with your surroundings and create lasting memories.

Conclusion: Dive Into the Heart of the Caribbean

There's a reason why small-ship cruising in the Caribbean is becoming increasingly popular. The intimate atmosphere, unique itineraries, immersive experiences, and personalized service make for an unparalleled vacation. By choosing a small-ship cruise, you're choosing to step off the beaten path and dive into the heart of the Caribbean.

So, are you ready to start your adventure? Your small-ship cruise is waiting to whisk you away to the azure waters, vibrant cultures, and stunning landscapes of the Caribbean. Bon voyage, and enjoy every moment of your unforgettable journey.

I have always been a fan of large cruise ships. For me, the larger, the better. However, there are many very nice aspects to cruising the Caribbean on a small ship cruise. Fewer crowds, and a more relaxed atmosphere certainly does sound appealing.
