1. Fontface Ninja

Fontface Ninja is a free browser extension that helps you figure out and try fonts. You can inspect, try, buy and bookmark any fonts on any website with just a couple of clicks.

When installed, just hover over a typeface to see the font name, size, line spacing, line height and color of the letters. Then you can click to try a typeface without leaving the website where you are browsing. Plus, Fontface can provide the price and links to buy for more than 30,000 typefaces.

2. Everhour Time Tracker

Everhour Time Tracker keeps track of how much time you spend working in project management tools. It’s a great extension to help designers (and freelancers) see exactly how much time they are spending on certain functions.

3. HoverSee

5. Theme and Plugins Detector for WordPress

Do you ever wonder what tools are powering another website? The Theme and Plugins Detector for WordPress tells you exactly what’s working in the background of other websites on the popular content management system.

04. Coda Notes

Web designers awaiting feedback from colleagues, or even clients, will benefit from Coda Notes, which lets you draw annotations on websites. Once the toolbar icon is selected a drop-down menu appears, displaying five simple tools to annotate with.

You have the ability to draw, highlight, erase, leave sticky notes and enter text, all on top of a web page. Once you have finished making notes, click ‘send notes’ and email a screenshot to your chosen recipient.

05. Dribbb(b)le

Since Dribbble is a design community, it's safe to assume that all the users will have high screen resolutions. So this Safari Extension, created by Eren Emre , increases the width of it from 940px to 1104px. It also kills all the tiny thumbnails on Dribbble and replaces them with bigger, 400x300 versions.

It automatically determines the hex value of the color you choose and copies it to the clipboard, allowing you to paste it right away in the drawing tool. ColorZilla keeps a history of all the colors you've picked, so you won't lose track of your top selections. Moreover, the extension can generate website palettes and create gradients that you can download in CSS format.

ColorZilla doesn't work for Safari, but you can use its alternative — Color Picker. It speeds up the process of picking colors and copies their value in any format you need: NSColor, UIColor, HEX, RGB, etc.

If you have never worked late into the night, you're in the minority of designers. Isn't dark mode the best option for the darkest time of day? There's conflicting scientific evidence, but many people believe that dark mode reduces the negative impact of blue light. The blue light emitted by electronic devices is believed to cause eye strain, dry eyes, and severe migraines. The Dark Reader extension is a pet project of software engineer and accessibility activist Alexander Shutov who often works late and wanted to create a tool to ease eye tension in the dark.

With the Dark Reader extension, you can join the "dark side" regardless of the time of day. The tool allows users to adjust brightness, contrast, and font settings to make pages more readable. Plus, dark-themed websites look astonishingly elegant. The extension is available for both Safari and Chrome users.

HoverSee's functionality is right in its name — when users hover the mouse over images and links, they see them larger and more clearly. The extension also provides previews of videos and websites alongside available descriptions. And, of course, it's a lifesaver for users with visual impairments.

HoverSee works great for websites with extensive image galleries and direct image links — for example, Facebook and Twitter. On Youtube, the extension automatically plays a video in its expanded mode. The tool is very easy to customize. You can adjust video delay, min and max zoom, whitelist or blacklist certain websites, autoplay or mute videos, and more.

If a better alternative is listed, click the site, and PriceBlink loads the alternate option in a separate tab. This simple extension could save you a lot of money over time. 

Password Management: LastPass

Safari has built-in password management, but LastPass is much better at the job. It works across multiple devices and also gives you somewhere to store files and notes securely.

A lot of the time, you'll need to delve into the separate app to use it fully, but the Safari extension gives you the ability to generate secure passwords, quickly fill in forms, or add notes, all directly from your browser. It's a real game changer for security and privacy concerns.

How often do you find yourself looking at a great long-form article and realizing you don't have the time to read it right now? With Pocket, you just need to click the "Save to Pocket" button, and the link saves to your account so you can easily consult it later on. It works across multiple devices and you can tag and label articles so that everything is neatly organized. 

Ad blocker: Adblock Plus

Easy to set up.

Settings can be a little tricky.

No one likes obtrusive ads when trying to read an interesting article online. Adblock Plus makes it simple to block ads and tracking ads that bug you, while "safelisting" websites that you want to see all the ads for. Adblock Plus takes a responsible approach to ads with an option allowing for "acceptable ads," appreciating that website owners still need to generate revenue, while saving you the hassle of the worst kind of adverts.

Being able to multitask is always a valuable skill. While you can switch between windows and tabs, it hasn't been possible to have YouTube or Netflix running alongside what you're working on in Safari.

Safari extensions add functionality to Safari, so you can explore the web the way you want. Extensions can show helpful information about a webpage, display news headlines, help you use your favorite services, change the appearance of webpages, and much more. Extensions are a great way to personalize your browsing experience.

Install extensions

Turn on extensions, turn off extensions, uninstall extensions, share extensions across devices.

Use the App Store to conveniently download and install Safari extensions. All extensions in the App Store are reviewed, signed, and hosted by Apple for your security, and they're automatically kept up to date.

Start by installing the latest macOS updates to make sure that Safari is up to date. You need Safari 12 or later to get Safari extensions from the App Store.

Open Safari and choose Safari > Safari Extensions from the menu bar.

The App Store opens to the Safari Extensions page. To download and install an extension, click Get or click the price. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.

Click Install.

After the extension is installed, click Open and follow the onscreen instructions provided by the extension.

After installing an extension, follow these steps to turn it on.

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences).

Click Extensions.

If you're browsing privately, or using a profile or web app

Browser extensions add specific capabilities to Safari by reading and modifying web content to promote an integrated browsing experience that’s tailored to your needs. There are two places to find Apple-approved Safari extensions: The App Store and the Safari Extensions Gallery webpage .

With Safari 12 on macOS Mojave and iOS 12, Apple revised the way its native web browser operates with extensions. Whereas in the past, you could easily download an extension from a developer, today you must download and install a Mac app or an Apple approved extension from the Safari Extensions Gallery page. The gallery is still operative for browser versions as far back as version 9, and is still considered a safe way to download and install Safari extensions. Regardless of the browser version, all apps from the App Store and Gallery page can update automatically.

Safari 12 blocks legacy extensions from third-party sources, and is now in the process of deprecating its own Extensions Gallery. It quit accepting new Gallery extension submissions at the end of 2018, accelerating a transition away from the Gallery in favor of the App Store. Many extensions continue to work just fine in Mohave’s latest browser.

Right now, there’s not much to the browser extension section of the App Store, which you can access via the Safari > Safari Extensions menu. Of the 66 App extensions currently available, only 27 are free. Another half dozen are 99 cents and the rest range in price to $19.99. Here are the best of the free extensions from both sources.

7 terms to know about invasive species (and some to avoid)

Effective communication in invasive species management relies on consistent and accurate terminology. Confusion is a problem when terms are not clearly defined. Agreeing on terminology helps to clearly communicate so that everyone can understand what invasive species are and why there is concern about them.  

Native and Non-native 

The first words that must be clearly defined in a conversation about invasive species are native and non-native.

• A good definition for native is a species that occurs naturally in a specified geographic area.
• At the same time, a non-native species does not occur naturally in a specific geographic location.

For example, red maple (Acer rubrum) and Norway maple are found in the United States. The red maple's native range is broad across the eastern half of the United States, but the Norway maple's range is in Europe. By these definitions, red maple is native to North America and non-native to Europe.  

Native and non-native can also be defined in a certain period, but this can be difficult to determine precisely with the movement of plants, animals, and changing landscapes.  

Introduced 

An introduced species is one that humans have relocated to a new area, intentionally or accidentally, making it non-native. Introduced species are not always harmful; they can be advantageous. For example, many introduced species enhance the visual appeal of residential landscapes, while various crop and livestock species, such as wheat, cattle, and European honeybees, offer nutritional value. 

Like the terms native and non-native, categorizing a species as introduced relies on a particular geographical area. It is more precise to clarify that daffodils ( Narcissus pseudonarcissu) are introduced to the United States rather than just using the general label "introduced." 

Established 

Many introduced species do not expand into new areas. For example, numerous non-native ornamental plants in people's gardens remain in those spaces. However, some species escape from cultivation or containment and independently form self-sustaining populations. These populations would be termed "established." 

It is important to note that species native to a specific location are also technically considered established. However, the term "established" is useful as it helps differentiate between non-native species that rely solely on human care (like crop species) and those that can survive, reproduce, and spread to new areas independently. 

Three criteria must be satisfied to categorize a species as invasive. The species should be non-native, introduced intentionally or unintentionally, and cause harm to the economy, environment, or humans.  

An example of an invasive plant in Illinois is the Amur Bush Honeysuckle (Lonicera maacki). Amur Bush Honeysuckle is widespread across the Midwest, altering ecosystems and impeding the growth of native plant species.  

Under certain circumstances, certain native species can pose environmental or economic challenges. These species can be commonly labeled as invasive or native invasive in these instances. However, these terms must be more accurate as these species are neither non-native nor introduced. The appropriate term for such situations is "nuisance."  

While all invasive species display nuisance characteristics, referring to them as invasive is preferred to emphasize their non-native and introduced status.  

For example, the trumpet creeper vine (Campsis radicans), native to a large part of the United States, can spread rapidly and be challenging to control. In scenarios like garden maintenance or managing small natural areas, the vigorous growth of any trumpet creeper in these locations can be considered a nuisance. While all invasive species display nuisance characteristics, referring to them as invasive is preferred to emphasize their non-native and introduced status. 

Range Change 

The term "range change" is the final concept we discuss. A range change happens when a species' current range expands, shrinks, or shifts. This phenomenon can occur naturally or with human involvement for native and non-native species. Hence, if a native species naturally expands its range without human intervention, it should not be labeled as non-native, introduced, or invasive. Instead, it is more accurate to describe it as a native species undergoing a range change.  

Many North American tree species native to the United States are undergoing range changes due to altered precipitation patterns linked to climate change (Fei et al., 2017). Humans are not responsible for intentionally or unintentionally relocating these species to new areas. 

Avoiding Misleading Terminology in Describing Species 

The term "native invasive" is inaccurate as native species cannot be invasive. Instead, when referring to native species causing management concerns, they should be called nuisances. 

• The term "invasive exotic" is confusing as all invasive species are non-native.  
• "Invasive weed" is misleading as "weed" is a subjective term. It can cause confusion by not specifying whether the plant is unwanted, native, non-native, or invasive. Using "invasive weed" may lead people to believe all weeds are invasive. 
• Terms like "alien," "foreign," and "nonindigenous" should be avoided as they are often linked to human migration. "Non-native" is a more suitable term for describing species introduced to new environments. 

Invasive species present significant environmental, economic, and direct threats to humans. For clarity, using standardized definitions for terminology is necessary. Knowing these key terms can help get conversations started so that changes can be made.

‘It should feel like an extension of the living room’: radical study centre is named best building in Europe

A ‘non-hierarchical’ university space that can be continually altered or even moved has won the EU’s biennial prize for contemporary architecture

A lightweight university study centre designed to be easily disassembled has won the prize for the best building in Europe . Longevity, permanence and a sense of immutability might be the ambition of most architects, but Gustav Düsing and Max Hacke would be delighted to see their building adapted and reconfigured, or ultimately dismantled and moved somewhere else altogether.

“We imagined the project as a changeable system,” says Düsing, co-designer of the new study pavilion for the Technical University of Braunschweig , Germany, which has been named this year’s winner of the EU Mies award (formerly the Mies van der Rohe award), the biennial European Union prize for contemporary architecture. “We wanted it to be a counter model to the university’s high-rise building and its conventional one-sided lecture halls. It’s more like an extension of the landscape that can be forever modified, a non-hierarchical space that the students can make their own.”

Standing as an elegant white steel and glass pavilion, nestled among trees on the edge of the university campus, the building houses an open-plan arrangement of flexible study spaces across two levels. From the outside, it seems impossibly slender, a thin sketch of a building formed by a rectangular framework of toothpick-thin columns and beams. Inside, it opens up as a three-dimensional learning landscape, a modular frame that invites different forms of inhabitation. Thick yellow curtains can be drawn to close off particular areas, creating ad hoc lecture rooms and quiet tutorial spaces, while the furniture can be moved outside on to balconies in the warmer months, providing outdoor study areas sheltered by a deep overhanging roof – which also shades the interior in summer.

The architects say they were inspired by the radical superstructures of the 1960s, including Cedric Price’s Fun Palace – a flexible “a university of the streets” once imagined for London – and Yona Friedman’s Ville Spatiale – a fantastical concept for a multilayered city-sized grid that could be constantly adapted. Neither of these came to pass, but some of their modular ambition lives on in Braunschweig’s 3 x 3-metre spaceframe.

While the ground floor is entirely open plan, the architects designed the first floor as a series of “islands” connected by bridges, creating separate study zones between lofty double-height volumes. Some are at the centre of it all, overlooking the action below, others are more removed and withdrawn, while desks around the edge feel almost suspended in the trees. Staircases link the different areas, inside and out, giving the sense of being inside a kind of climbing frame of learning. “It’s a bit like nesting,” says Düsing. “You offer a space that is very complex and has a lot of different qualities, then students can come in and find their spot.”

The architects describe the building as acting like a microchip on a circuit board, a central meeting point connected to all parts of the university campus. There is no front or back, but nine equal entrances all around the 1,000 square metre (10,760 sq ft) building, making it feel like an open hub, accessible from all directions – even from the footpath along the nearby river, welcome in members of the public, too. The students have already adopted the structure and started to add their own interventions: on the architects’ last visit, they found someone had even strung up a hammock from the steel frame. “It should feel like an extension of the living room,” says Hacke. “They come here to eat and play cards, as well as work.”

From a technical perspective, the building’s chief innovation is in its structural system. Inspired by Märklin construction sets (the German equivalent of Meccano), it is built from a prefabricated kit of parts that can be easily taken apart. Everything is bolted or screwed together, rather than welded or glued, in keeping with the wider movement towards circular construction, allowing entire building components to be reused. The slender frame is made of hollow steel sections that are just 10cm (4in) wide, and which also contain the electrical wiring, lighting and plug sockets, as well as housing drainage downpipes – doing away with the need for suspended ceilings and raised floors, where such services are usually housed.

The floors are made from prefabricated timber cassettes, slotted into place, while the ceilings are covered with perforated acoustic panelling which, along with the curtains and carpeted floors, creates a remarkably quiet environment. “It is a counter model to being in the library,” says Düsing. “There’s a background buzz, but it’s never overwhelming.”

The judges praised the rigour and precision of the project – which was selected from a longlist of 40 buildings across Europe – commenting on how it “has taken a clear architectural idea, scrutinised it and pushed it to the limit.” More than just a building, they added, “it could be understood as a versatile system, merging technological inventions with a flexible and reusable principle.”

The project has already garnered wide recognition in Germany, winning the national architecture prize from the Deutsches Architekturmuseum , and hailed by one newspaper critic as “what the future of German construction could look like”. In a time of scarce resources, it has been praised for being as lean and economical as possible: everything has been stripped back to the bare minimum, honed to its most essential elements to fit within the total €5.2m (£4.47m) budget (€3.2m for the construction).

The project is all the more impressive given that it is the architects’ first ever building. Düsing, 40, and Hacke, 38, entered the competition in 2015, just a couple of years after graduating from London’s Architectural Association, where they had met as students. They now both have independent offices in Berlin, but come together to collaborate with others when needs arise. “It’s a survival strategy,” says Hacke, of their loose network of seven. “We can work together when we need a bigger workforce, then go back to our smaller structures.” It is a nimble model of practice that is as agile, efficient and adaptable as the building itself.

The last winner of the EU Mies award, in 2022, was a similarly open-plan and adaptable building for Kingston University, the palatial Town House designed by Grafton Architects .
