We saw some old houses and farms too, in these remote, beautiful places. As we moved along Loch Beag, we saw Eas a’ Chual Aluinn, majestic as it is but not in full flow. Nevertheless, it was an awe-inspiring moment to see Britain’s highest waterfall. There was another waterfall too, albeit a smaller one across the valley.

The weather on the day was fantastic, which made the landscapes even more stunning.

Fantastic new boat trip from Kylesku

We have thoroughly enjoyed walking to both the Point of Stoer and round Handa Island several times. This boat trip to the sea stacks of Stoer and Handa however offers a completely different perspective on both places. Being at sea level allows you to get up really close to the rocks and seabirds and the opportunity to be in amongst the wildlife. When Mike and I did this trip in July, we watched the guillemots jumping off the rocks like little penguins and were also fortunate to see a White Tailed Sea Eagle and several porpoises; an added bonus. Derek and Nicola are great hosts and the trip is relaxed, informal and informative about wildlife, geology and the history of the area. There is also a Cape Wrath Landing Tour which is 8 hours and includes lunch, which we are also keen to try.

Easing out of Kylesku, Integrity takes us into the great expanse of Loch A Chairn Bhain. Continuing seawards, we are gifted with an increasingly panoramic view of the ruggedly beautiful Sutherland coastline. There is quite a distance be to be covered before arriving at our first stack, the Old Man of Stoer. However, this is no occasion for boredom. Integrity, is a modern vessel and powers comfortably and speedily along the ocean surface. Additionally, the knowledgeable Nicola is on hand enthusiastically supplying information on matters natural, historical, geological…the list is nearly endless! The “Old Man” is first glimpsed in distant silhouette, but soon Derek navigates us to a more detailed view of this imposing structure. Standing 60 metres tall, and having the outward form of a game of Jenga in its final stages, it provides nesting for several species of bird. Next on the agenda is the Great Stack of Handa. Closing in on it, almost to within touching distance, the afternoon sun is blocked out and the raw, stark, almost unnerving, majesty of the rock towers 70 metres immediately above. Every guano-drizzled layer of the sedimentary rock is richly populated with myriad birds of almost myriad varieties – puffins, great skua, shags, razorbills, fulmars and others all engaged in a cacophonic jostling for living and breeding space. But don’t worry if you don’t know a puffin from a penguin, or a fulmar from a finch, as Nicola, with her aforementioned encyclopaedic knowledge, will confidently identify all the species within this teeming display of avian diversity. Reluctantly leaving this fascinating metropolis of bustling birds, we commence our leisurely return to Kylesku with our minds full of memories and our eyes soaking up the sight of the North West coastline glowing in the mid-afternoon sun. A wonderful end to a wonderful day.

Just returned from an absolutely magical sea tour around the coast of Sutherland on board ‘Integrity’ with Derrick and Nicola. The boat is a lifeboat style modern powerboat very comfortable and choice of out in the open or inside. Really friendly, lively and informative. We have been on a few boat tours around Scotland and the Islands - this was undoubtedly the best. We saw sea eagles, seals, deer, puffins and countless different sea birds nesting on the cliffs of Handa Island. Unforgettable experience with the majestic mountains and astounding rock formations as backdrop. Thrilling! If you are heading into the northwest highlands, this is a splendid trip not to be missed. The backdrop of the Assynt hills from Foinaven to Suilven and beyond was magnificent, and an unexpected bonus to see them as part of a single panorama. We hope you can locate the sea eagle's nest: that part of the coast was quiet and beautiful- the sandy beach at Oldany Island looked magical. Having visited Handa Island previously, we particularly appreciated the proximity to the cliffs, and being able to drift amongst the rafts of common, black and bridled guillemots. It was exciting to hear the cacophony of bird sound, see the chicks perched on the narrow ledges and to watch puffins in flight. Our boat tour is a wildlife and wilderness experience in one of the last unspoiled areas of Scotland. During the tour, you will see Britain’s highest waterfall. Eas a’Chual Aluinn is the highest waterfall in the United Kingdom with a sheer drop of 200m. When in full flow it is over three times higher than Niagara Falls.

You will see the sea lochs of Glencoul and Glendhu. The wildlife includes many seals (and seal pups) and seabirds. We often see razorbill cormorants puffins, sea eagles, and golden eagles.

Run from Kylesku harbour, just yards from Kylesku Hotel.

Sailing times are: 10.30am, 12pm & 2:00pm - though private charters can also be arranged. Each cruise is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes - this can vary slightly. Fully licensed and insured for all passengers. Adults, children & dogs welcome.

Come and discover wildlife and visit the seal colonies. We also have sightings of porpoises, dolphins, basking sharks, whales, and lots of species of seabirds including sea eagles.

You’ll also see the most amazing scenery with fantastic views of Assynt’s stunning mountains as well as beautiful beaches and the amazing Split Rock.

Wildlife cruises last for an hour and a half and depart every day, from April until October, at the following times: 10 am, 12 noon, 2 pm and 4 pm.

Sunset cruises last for an hour and a half and depart every evening, from April until October, at 7 pm.

We offer sea angling trips from Lochinver or Kinlochbervie. These trips can be tailored to suit our clients from one hour trips to full day charters. We get regular catches of cod, haddock, pollock, ling, spurdog, mackerel and much more.

During my boat trip, we sailed through the sea lochs of Glencoul and Glendhu, spotting loads of seals and some seabirds. There were even mussels on the loch walls. We saw some old houses and farms too, in these remote, beautiful places. As we moved along Loch Beag, we saw Eas a’ Chual Aluinn, majestic as it is but not in full flow. Nevertheless, it was an awe-inspiring moment to see Britain’s highest waterfall. There was another waterfall too, albeit a smaller one across the valley.

The weather on the day was fantastic, which made the landscapes even more stunning.

The area’s geological importance is also emphasized, particularly its role in teaching 3D thinking to geoscientists.

A Moving Story

Although the ground beneath our feet seems solid, in reality the surface of the Earth is made up of a number of plates which float across its surface. When plates move away from each other this can create huge rifts, faults and volcanic ridges.

The Big Freeze

2.4 million years ago the climate cooled so dramatically that Europe was plunged into an Ice Age lasting until 11,500 years ago.

Reading The Rocks

Reading the rocks.

Sedimentary rock starts out as little grains carried along in rivers and streams and is built up of many layers of sediment, eventually becoming compacted under the weight of layers above until it becomes rock. Erosion along the coast has exposed these rocks and in some places you can see ripple marks made by an ancient river.

The Highlands Controversy

By the start of the 19 th  century, geologists were beginning to examine regions in some detail. In 1819, Dr John MacCulloch published a work in three volumes,  A Description of the Western Isles of Scotland …  which remained the classic account of the geology of the area for at least fifty years.

Bears, Reindeer and Environmental Change in the Last Ice Age: an update from the Assynt Bone Caves

The NWH Geopark is partnering with Loch Broom Field Club in a talk by Tim Lawson in the Committee Room of Ullapool Village Hall. Excavations  by Peach and Horne in 1889 and James Cree in 1926 found reindeer antlers, bear and lynx bones and a possible polar bear, in addition to Neolithic human bones and artefacts from the Viking Age. Learn what modern techniques can tell us about these remains and the dates and events of the last Ice Age. Tim will discuss the cave excavations and the results of the latest research into the various artefacts uncovered including animal and human bones. £3 entrance fee Free to Geopark Friends, Ambassadors and members of the Lochbroom Field Club.

North Coast Geotour

Please note this tour is fully booked for 2024. The North Coast Geotour will consist of 8 field days and has two more field days than the other geotours and is based in Durness. Transport via minibus will be available from Ullapool to Durness, all field localities and the return trip back to Ullapool. If Geotour participants wish to use their own transport that is also an option. The Geotour will be led by Pete Harrison, the NW Highlands Geopark Geologist. Find out more      

Thrust and fold geometry of the Lewisian and Torridonian in Upper Glen Oykel

This geological outing in the Assynt Window will view the thrust and fold geometry of the Lewisian and Torridonian in Upper Glen Oykel. The Loch Ailsh syenite intrusions and its field relationships of the with the Cambrian carbonates and quartzites will be examined. Some questions that we will try and answer are: How can we explain the distribution of the Torridonian outcrops? How does the Lewisian overlie the Torridonian? What are the relative ages of the thrusts? How far did they translate and in what direction? What is the relative age of the Syenites and felsic sills intrusions? The trip will be guided by Keith Milne, who mapped this area in detail for his B.Sc thesis in 1976. If the weather conditions are good, then it is planned to walk about 5km up the valley. The first part of the walk is along a good track. The second part of the track is not too steep, but occasionally rough. Binoculars are recommended. The Glen cuts through about 500m of topography allows the 3D geometry of the thrust surfaces to be interpreted. This can be displayed on the terrain together with the geology and dips of the beds, as in the following link:  Glen Oykell Geology Places are limited. The NW Highlands Controversy: geology, geologists and social climbing in Victorian times – Talk by Peter Gutteridge

In 1854, the discovery of fossils near Durness on the north coast of Scotland triggered one of the bitterest scientific controversies of Victorian times. Geologist Sir Roderick Impey Murchsion, director of the Geological Survey, claimed that the fossils proved that much of NW Scotland was a conformable sequence of rocks belonging to his Silurian system. But geologist James Nicol of Aberdeen University, suggested that the fossils were younger and went on to suggest that the geological succession was broken by a series of major faults. In 1860, Murchison invited the ambitious, young survey geologist Archibald Geikie, on a tour of NW Scotland to pass on his knowledge of the geology. During the 1860s, Geikie rose through the ranks of the Geological Survey with Murchison’s support, eventually taking up the chair of Geology at the University of Edinburgh, endowed for him by Murchison, in 1871. Against an increasing tide of scientific dissent during the 1870s, Geikie continued to support Murchison’s view on the geology of NW Scotland. In 1883, Geikie, now Director of the Geological Survey, assembled a team of Survey geologists to map NW Scotland, who eventually showed that Murchison was wrong.   Peter Gutteridge Bio I’m a geologist specialising in carbonate rocks, recently retired from doing consulting work that took me all over the world, particularly Latin America, the Middle and Far East and around Europe. I am continuing my geological career at Manchester University, writing all the papers I never had time for when I was working. I was introduced to the Moine thrust controversy as an undergraduate at Leeds University where it, and NW Scotland, has become part of my life ever since. Places are limited. THINGS TO DO…

We are utterly spoilt for beaches with each one having its own character. Here are the main ones...

OLDSHOREMORE Toilets An expansive beach with its white sands makes this a unmissable visit (pictured above).

POLIN This quiet flat beach is our favourite for many reasons, but we'll let you decide. Situated just beyond Oldshoremore, you can either walk over the headland or drive directly there.

SANDWOOD BAY Toilets in car park Beyond Oldshoremore and Polin, a footpath takes you the four miles to Sandwood Bay. When you arrive, you will discover the isolation and beauty of this unspoilt sandy beach. Head north to Kinlochbervie and then head towards Sheigra and park at Blairmore. Make sure you take a picnic! There's a handy toilet block in car park before you walk out.

ACHMELVICH Toilets A small but beautiful sheltered bay near Lochinver which is normally hooching (def: busy). Great for paddleboarding or if you have a wee boat. We would also highly recommned you climb over the headland at the end of the beach where there is another much quiter beacher that is also stunning.

CLACHTOLL AND CLASHNESSIE If you are driving the Drumbeg loop road from Kylesku to Lochinver you will discover these two glorious beaches - unmissable whatever the weather. If you're hungry en route there's Flossies (café) and Catch Toll (fish & chips) both at Clachtoll.

SCOURIE BAY The nearest beach if you need a quick fix with a nice walk out to the point.

DURNESS BEACHES As you enter Durness, take a left down to the expansive Balnakeil beach with its sand dunes and wandering cows. If you stay on the main road you will come to Sango Bay which has fantastic rock formations jutting out of the beach. If you head 3 miles further along you will come another beach where the Golden Eagle Zip Line operate the most northerly zip line in Western Europe.

There are many other beautiful beaches including Ardmair, White Shore Beach in Culag Woods, Rhue, Achiltbuie and Sheigra.

The Discover Assynt website is a fantastic resource when planning things to see and do during your stay. You will find all sorts of information about castles, caves and walks, as well as general services available in the parish of Assynt. If you're keen to do some hills, then Walk Highlands is a brilliant source of information which you can print out in advance of your stay.

Mckenzie Mountaineering  offer guided walks and  Hamlet Mountaineering provide a range of activities including climbing and guided days out. Ben, Rosie and Tim are passionate about the outdoors and no matter what the weather assure you a great day out, kayaking, climbing, or discovering hidden gems of the area.  

Here are a few of our highlights ...

REAY ESTATE Across the Kylesku Bridge is the Reay Estate where there are a number of excellent walks. Some guests like to walk from the lodges, but we would recommend you drive over to the car park as on your return you'll thank us! There is a fairly flat walk along the edge of the loch which is great for wildlife watching. Glendhu Bothy is at the end and the walk is approximately 4.5 miles in each direction. Alternatively, walk as far as the Hydro and take a left turn uphill. This circular route will take about 3.5 hours and will bring you back to the car park at the start. Fantastic views of the area. There is also a shorter walk (1 mile in total) which takes you down to the old jetty opposite the Kylesku Hotel, and is smooth underfoot.

QUINAG The mountains awaiting you are calling (Sàil Gharbh and Sàil Ghorm). They can be tackled individually or you could even make a day of it and conquer all three in the range. A not to be missed opportunity as the views are outstanding. Take your binoculars and spot your lodge! Heading south from the lodge, the car park is about 5 miles, cross the road and follow the path in.

THE BONE CAVES , just south of Inchnadamph An area of great botanical, geological and historical interest. Animal bones found in one of the limestone caves - including brown bear, reindeer and lynx - suggest the cave may have been home to man at the end of the last Ice Age - some 11,000 years ago! There is also an added incentive of Sovi's Coffee who brew exceptional coffee!

ALL ABILITIES WALK near Lochinver A lovely quiet flat walk ideal those with limited mobility or little kiddies that like to scoot or bike. Turn left to Lochinver at the bottom of Loch Assynt junction and its about 5 miles along this road. Look out for the tiny green sign and car park on your right. There's also a composting toilet along the walk.

CULAG WOODS Just outside Lochinver, on the road to Inverkirkcaig, is our new favourite place . If you’re looking an atmospheric woodland walk, this full of lovely little paths (some hilly) and has a quirky play park, ideal for picnics and wandering. Make sure you go all the way to White Shore Beach as the pebbly beach is a one-off! Great for a wet day as its pretty sheltered.

WAILING WIDOW WATERFALL A lovely hidden waterfall just 5 minutes up the road, back towards Ullapool. The 10 minute walk to the foot of the waterfall is well worth it, albeit there is a bit of a scramble along the narrow pathway by the stream.

OLD MAN OF STOER An hour's walk from the car park near Stoer lighthouse, the Old Man of Stoer is a spectacular sea stack. The coast's sandstone geology has also led to the formation of caves, arches and cliffs - the latter teaming with seabirds. Go carefully - these cliffs can be dangerous.

LOCHINVER A busy fishing port, Lochinver provides a full range of visitor facilities and services including boat cruises and bike hire . The local pottery - Highland Stoneware - is world famous. The Assynt Visitor Centre is now located in the Leisure Centre.

DURNESS & SMOO CAVE A scattered crofting community backed by a series of beautiful beaches. Smoo Cave is a spectacular limestone cavern. A wooden walkway enables visitors to view the waterfall in the inner chamber - which can also be explored by a boat trip . Exhilarating! Don’t forget to visit Cocoa Mountain for your hot chocolate fix in the Craft Village on the left as you come in to Durness.

ACHILTIBUIE & INVERKIRKAIG The Achiltibuie area is renowned for its unforgettable seascapes and some great coastal walks - especially from Reiff. From here a wonderful twisty road leads to Lochinver via Inverkirkaig - a crofting township overlooking a beautiful bay. A path beside the River Kirkaig leads to the Falls of Kirkaig and on to the foot of Suilven - Assynt's famous 'sugar-loaf' mountain.

HANDA ISLAND Visit in spring and summer to see some of the 30+ bird species which breed here including razorbills, puffins and great and arctic skuas. The boat sails from Tarbet beginning at 9am, with the last return sailing at 5pm. Sailing everyday except Sunday. They don't take bookings so if you can get there by 9 you'll be able to make a day of it. Take plenty water and food and if you want to take advantage of the crystal clear waters, don't forget your swimmers. The trip is unfortunately not suitable for dogs. More info here .

KYLESKU – The Waterfall Tour Visit some of the most stunning scenery up Loch Glencoul to see Eas a’Chual Aluinn – the highest waterfall in Britain, with an abundance of possible wildlife sightings and local seal colonies. More info here . Daily tours from April to September from the jetty in Kylesku, dog friendly.

FISHING With so much water comes so many opportunities to fish. If you just fancy bringing a rod and giving it a go, then there are plenty of little spots around the lodges where you can give it a go. For fly fishing then Stewart Yates has over 30 years experience. His details can be found here .

KAYAKING AND CANOEING Kayak Summerisles provide Sea Kayak and Canoe adventures in the Summer Isles and North West. We've had so many guests say this has been one of their highlghts. Book early to avoid disappointment.The closest place to hire kayaks is Inverness at Graham Tiso although many guests bring their own inflatable ones.

PADDLEBOARDING There are many incredible spots to take a paddleboard to and you can now hire from Assynt Paddleboard Hire . Feel free to bring your own if you prefer and we can let you know some of the great places to go once you get here!

THE DIPPING LUGGER West Shore Street, Ullapool Situated on the shore of Loch Broom, just along from the ferry terminal, this new restaurant offers something very special - a superb tasting menu that showcases the fantastic produce that surrounds Ullapool. OLD SCHOOL Inshegra, Kinlochbervie 01971 521383 Another delicious place for lunch or dinner is Old School at Inshegra, on the road to Oldshoremore, before Kinlochbervie. The food is so tasty and fresh that you’ll probably want to make another trip just to try something else on the menu. Make sure you leave room for their homemade ice-cream. Even if it’s just one scoop we think it’s the best in the area.

The Ullapool Smokehouse is located in the Industrial Estate, on the left as just as you drive into Ullapool from the North. Absolutely delicious hot smoked salmon and trout.

Unfortunately the supermarkets don't deliver up to the lodges, but guests often arrange a Click and Collect at either of the two large Tescos in Inverness, or stop off at the Tesco in Ullapool. We can also recommend Drumbeg stores who can deliver essentials and local produce to your lodge pre-arrival.
