Wine in Croatia, like so much of Europe, is part of daily life. Croatia’s lengthy coastline along the Adriatic Sea provides favorable conditions for cultivating vines, which line the coastal hillsides. The Istrian peninsula is known for its spectacular wine-making and – as such – wine tasting in Rovinj is an absolute must-do!

Rovinj Wine

Rovinj, Croatia View from north of town

Not only can visitors get a taste of the locally-produced wine in Rovinj, they can get it straight from the source. In addition to the shops and bars in Rovinj that sell local wine, there are two wineries and a winery tasting room that are within walking distance from the Rovinj Old Town.

One of the best things to do in Rovinj, Croatia is to visit the three wine tasting locations on a convenient and easy Rovinj Wine Walk.

Croatia’s Wine History

Glass of white wine in Apartment Herc in Split, Croatia

Croatia’s long wine history dates back to the Ancient Greeks in the 5th century BC, but has seen many changes in current times. When Croatia was part of Yugoslavia, producing wine from traditional family vineyards was discouraged.

During the break up of Yugoslavia, many of these vineyards were destroyed and, more recently, wild fires consumed a great number of vineyards along the Dalmatian Coast. However, locally-produced wines throughout Croatia are flourishing and it’s quite evident…especially in Istria.

Visitors planning a trip to Croatia should definitely put tasting the local wine on their itinerary!

Istria Wine

We saw grapes growing in fields and at private homes during our Rovinj Wine Walk

In Istria, white wines triumph over reds. Istrian white wines tend to be dry and fruity. Although red wine is less prevalent in Istria, Teran is a big, jammy, spicy wine that is commonly produced in this area of Croatia.

Wine Tasting: Shops and Bars in Rovinj, Croatia

For those not wanting to take a Rovinj Wine Walk, Piassa Granda has many local wines to chose from

Sampling the flavor of Istrian wine is fairly simple in the Rovinj Old Town. Every cafe and restaurant in Rovinj serves local wine. Additionally, the numerous wine shops and souvenir shops that line the streets sell wine, too (and offer free samples to tourists!).

Surprisingly, there are not that many dedicated wine bars in Old Town Rovinj…but there are a few! The charming Piassa Granda features a fantastic wine list of the area’s finest wines. The helpful waitstaff can make recommendations.  2023 Update: NOW CLOSED!

Two other wine stores in Rovinj are both near the Rovinj Market; Wine shop “MAGI” and Engel Wine & Cheese Shop.

However, visitors who are interested in learning more about the locally produced wine have the opportunity to visit Rovinj wineries.

Rovinj Wineries

The stunning countryside, as seen from the hiking and biking trails in Rovinj Croatia

While the Old Town is a dense jumble of cobblestone lanes, there is spacious land – and numerous vineyards – just outside the Rovinj town center. Visitors eager to taste Rovinj wine from wineries don’t have to go far. There are two wineries – and a winery tasting room – within walking distance from the Old Town.

Wine Walk: Wine Tasting in Rovinj, Croatia

Picturesque lane in Old Town Rovinj, Croatia

Stoked to have found wineries so close to the Old Town, we created our own wine tasting route. The short walk – just 1.5 miles – can be made in a loop, beginning and ending in the Old Town. Using our directions, map and tips, visitors can follow in our footsteps for a fun afternoon of Rovinj wine tasting tour.

Would you rather join a guided tour to nearby Rovinj wineries? We feature popular Rovinj winery tours at the end of the article!

#1 Villa Dobravac, Rovinj

The views from Villa Dobravac - the first stop on our Rovinj Wine Walk - are amazing!

Villa Dobravac is many things – a hotel, a restaurants, a bar….and a winery. Featuring nine award-winning wines, Villa Doravac is a perfect place to begin tasting wine in Rovinj!

In addition to the on-site wine-making and bottling facilities, the Dobravac family also makes their own olive oils. Visitors can sample the wines – and other agricultural offerings and food pairings – from the restaurant’s spacious patio.

Dobravac Wines

The first stop on our Rovinj Wine Walk was at Villa Dobravac

Of the two red choices, I favored the Fuga, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. I liked that it was bold and had a bit of spice to it. Kris preferred the Toccata, a blend of Merlot, Teran, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which had a fuller fruit flavor and was slightly softer.

The atmosphere at Dobravac is stylish, but laid-back. We savored each glass of wine while taking in the views of the Rovinj Old Town and Adriatic Sea in the distance.

#2 Vivoda Wine, Rovinj

Vivoda was the second stop on our Rovinj Wine Walk

The Vivoda family has been producing quality wines since 1952 using the region’s well-known grapes: Malvazia, Teran, Merlot and Muscat White. Their signature wine is St. Euphemia (named after the the Rovinj St. Euphemia Church ) – a white wine that ages for 16 months in oak barrels.

The Vivoda Winery is an inconspicuous complex housed in a neighborhood that can easily be missed. We passed right by it and had to double back around to find it…and we are certainly glad we made the effort! Unpolished and industrial, Vivoda Winery is, perhaps, less a tasting room and more a functional wine making facility.

The Vivoda Winery Experience

When we arrived, we were unsure if they were even open until another patron walked in, approached the counter and unloaded several large empty water bottles. A man appeared from behind a cask and took the bottles to the back…only to return with them filled with wine.

Completely baffled by this unpretentious method of buying wine direct from the winery, we asked to try a glass of the Vivoda Teran, which he offered to us free of charge. There was only one table (a converted barrel) in the front of the room with two chairs, so we somewhat awkwardly took a seat. As we sipped the full-flavored wine, we watched more people come in, all with their empty bottles to be filled.

We consulted the price list and were astonished to find each 1 liter bottle only cost around $5 USD. Noting the bin of used plastic bottles next to the counter, we fished out a clean one and asked for it to be filled with Teran and enjoyed it later during an amazing Rovinj sunset .

#3 San Tommaso Wine, Rovinj

We ended our Rovinj Wine Walk on the harbor at San Tommaso Wine Bar

Not actually a winery (the San Tommaso Winery is actually located on a 150-year-old estate 10 miles outside of Rovinj in the town of Bale), the San Tommaso Vinoteka is a lovely tasting room. Located directly on the Rovinj fishing harbor and offering outdoor seating with views of the Old Town, San Tommaso is a fabulous last stop on a Rovinj Wine Tasting Walk.

They pour their own wine, as well as products from other Istrian wineries and have knowledgeable staff on hand for questions. We recommend taking a waterfront table and enjoying the sunset, with a glass of San Tommaso wine in hand, of course!

Top Tips for your Rovinj Wine Tasting Walk

Rovinj, Croatia Best Restaurants and places to eat

  • Allow about 2 hours to complete the Wine Walk, including stops for tastes at each place.
  • During our visit in the autumn, the Villa Dobravac bar opened at 2:00pm and Vivoda opened at 3:00pm. San Tommaso and the other wine bars and shops had longer opening hours. Verification of open hours during your visit is suggested.
  • Street signs in Istria are in Croatian and/or Italian.
  • Visitors could also complete our Wine Route via bicycle. Read our tips for Biking in Rovinj .
  • If heading to Vivoda, don’t forget to bring an empty liter water bottle!

Things To Know about Drinking Wine in Rovinj, Croatia

  • Most wine pours in Rovinj are 100 ml (often listed as .1l), which is quite a bit less than a standard pour in an American bar or restaurant. We actually thought it was nice because we were able to sample several types of wine that way.
  • Like most wine, prices range by quality. A glass of the local boutique wine can start at $10 and quickly shoot upwards. At the wine bars in Rovinj, even more expensive varieties are offered. However, at local cafes, a glass of Istrian table wine can cost as little as $4.

Here is what's in store for you

This private full-day wine tour is dedicated to wine lovers who wish to discover the quiddity of the wine-making heritage in Istria.

Imagine mysterious lands hiding fabulous hilltop towns, and colorful vineyards with old, authentic estates and wineries where you can taste the traditional flavors accompanied by the finest Istrian wines. To capture the essence of Istria you have to use all your senses!

During this whole day tour, you will have the opportunity to visit three different wineries. All wineries selected for this tour differ in approach to winemaking and style of the wines. Some wineries have a very long tradition, some are young, but they all have one thing in common: they are among the best in Croatia, boasting international recognition and awards. You will learn about different styles of production: long maceration, no maceration, aging in barriques, in big wooden vessels or stainless steel tanks... and taste fresh and aged wines made from indigenous, Istrian grape varieties but also blends with international grape varieties.

In each of the three wineries, you will enjoy a tasting of 5 to 6 wines combined with delicious, local snacks like Istrian cheese, sausages, and olive oil. The experience also includes a visit to the wine cellars to get familiar with the technology and the process of wine production.

In between the winery visits, you will make a stop at the fabulous, hilltop town of Grožnjan, known as the town of artists, to discover a magical side of Istria and enjoy a 4-course early dinner in a fantastic, family-owned restaurant combining traditional cuisine with modern touch.

In all wineries, you will be accompanied by an expert guide or the owner of the winery him/herself. Only the best wineries and restaurants are included in this full-day private tour of Istria, and wine tastings in wineries are scheduled by special arrangement. After the visits, you are by no means obligated to buy wines, but you will have the chance if you wish to.

We went on the "hard trail" and it involved a lot more off trail adventures than I was expecting, way more than just a walk in the woods. We found two truffles! This area is absolutely beautiful and having a knowledgable guide was fun and made it very relaxing. Overall it was an incredible day I would recommend to anyone! Read more Written 3 October 2023

The Istrian countryside is breath taking and she knew the geography well, including small historic towns. The truffle hunting excursion eith the dog was very unique and fun. The olive oil tour and tasting was great. The wine tasting overlooking the countryside at Rossi was an incredible highlight. Would definitely recommend this excursion. • Q4744FAjenb 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles One of my favorite experiences One of the best tours I’ve ever been on! Agi took my boyfriend and I throughout Istria for the day. She went above and beyond the itinerary and offered to add in extra stops along the way for views and pictures. We went to Ipsa for olive oil tasting and snacks. They were almost never ending with the various snacks brought out and they also had us sample three types of wines. Next stop was Karlic for some truffle hunting. There they taught us all you could ever know about truffles, and the history of their truffle business. We were also served various snacks with truffles as well as home made scrambled truffle eggs and donuts with “trufella” (chocolate truffle). We were able to watch them make the eggs and donuts as if we were in a live cooking show. After we ate more truffle snacks than you could imagine, we went on the hunt with their professional truffle hunting dogs. We spent about 45 minutes in the forest with the dogs. I would recommend sneakers for this part because although it’s not strenuous, the trail is somewhat steep. At the end of our hunt Agi met us with the car to take us to Motovun where we walked the city walls. Our last stop was Matosevic Winery. We were greeted with a welcome glass of white wine to sip on while learning all about their various wines and the wine making process. Lastly we sampled 7 wines while enjoying some charcuteries. During the drive between stops Agi taught us all about the history of Istria and the rest of Croatia. This tour is worth every penny! Read more Written 21 June 2022
  • davidemG4410PD 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing immersion into Istria We were thoroughly impressed with the day Agnieszka put together for us. We have been fortunate enough to experience private experiences across the major wine regions across France, Italy and Spain and we were pleasantly surprised with the diversity of experiences she created for us in northern Croatia. Not only did she she put together an amazing day of olive oil/wine tasting and truffle hunting, but the car rides in between visits were enriching educational experiences where she helped provide historical and cultural context to our experiences. The truffle hunting portion of the day was truly unique to anything thing else we’ve done in Europe...who doesn’t love an afternoon of hanging out with dogs and having a meal showered in truffles? The olive oil was among the best we’ve tasted in the region and very educational to learn the different extraction techniques used across countries. Agnieszka also has a number of great connections in the up and coming Croatian wine scene which is a must do for wine lovers who enjoy big body reds and high character whites. • TineMorrison 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Boutique wine tour with amazing guide We booked the half-day wine tour visiting Benvenuti in Kaldir and Matosević in Krunčići. Our guide Agnieszka picked us up in Rovinj at 9:30 and we spent the entire day together. She was very helpful and informative, sending information in advance over email and had great knowledge about the wines and vineyard culture once we arrived at each winemaker. It was great to spend the day with a local who was so passionate about wine and could suggest other wineries to go to on our own after the tour. The tour itself was very comprehensive and we enjoyed visiting 2 boutique family-run wineries. Each winery had multiple glasses of wine along with small snacks of cheese, meat, and olive oil. In between each visit we also stopped at scenic view points to take pictures of towns such as Motovun and Pazin. Agnieszka was helpful throughout the day answering questions. Even after our tour we kept in touch and she went above and beyond by helping us to figure out how to bring a few bottles of wine back home with us. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who is interested in wine and seeing the surrounding areas of Istria. Read more Written 26 October 2020

Agnieszka is an outstanding guide and conducted the most complete and informative tour we have ever had in Europe, and we have been traveling there yearly for over 40 years. It was a complete day of joy. Food and wine plus the many sights were the best and made better with Angie's commentary. Highly recommend her and this tour to all serious travelers. • Neema13 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles WINE TOUR & TRUFFLE LUNCH A MUST DO TOUR!! A friend and I planned this tour a couple of months prior to visiting Croatia. Rovinj was the 1st town we stayed in during our 2 week vacation. We opted for the day long Wine & Truffle tour. From the get go, Agnieszka was very prompt to answering any questions, as well as customizing our tour to our desired time. Mind you, this was nearly 2 months prior to our trip. This tour FAR exceeded our expectations. Between the carefully chosen wineries, the complimentary charcuterie boards and her knowledge of the region... there was never a dull moment. Agnieszka even went out of her way to take us to a remote, family owned olive oil vineyard because we showed interest in purchasing some olive oil in the Istria region. What we appreciated most is that this was a laid-back, no pressure, enjoyable experience. We did buy multiple bottles of wine and olive oil each ... simply bc we LOVED it. Our Truffle lunch: during our booking we expressed our love for Truffles. Again, Agnieszka picked the PERFECT restaurant that included all things truffle. We ate to our hearts content ! Although our tour went a bit over our booked time, at no point did we feel rushed. Another added BONUS: based on the conversation we had throughout the day ...Agnieszka offered & followed through with a personalized email of a list (a VERY long & thought out list) of vineyards and restaurants to visit during our entire 2 week stay along the Croatian coast. This was a much welcomed surprise as both my friend and I are both food and wine lovers!! I cannot express enough how much we enjoyed our day. This perfect day in Rovijn will definitely be a memorable one. Thank you Agnieszka for making this such a positive experience for us. We look forward to sending you many referrals from the USA! • Bess S 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A Day to Treasure My husband and I joined another couple for a great day of wine tours with Mihaela. We first visited Misal winery. This winery makes only sparkling wines. We were able to visit the bottling area and were taught about the process of making the sparkling wine. The next winery was a small family winery, Clio. This was a bonus winery as we were meeting with another couple and Agnieszka, Mihaela's tour guide partner. We then visited the beautiful hilltop town of Groznjan. We were able to wander around the small streets filled with artist shops. Our next stop was Kabola where wines are aged in amphorae. Lunch was a 4 course feast at local restaurant. Our final stop was Kozlovic, with beautiful views of the surrounding area. At each winery we were given full explanations of the wine making process, fed delightful snacks, and treated as treasured guests. Mihaela gave interesting explanations and commentary throughout the day. The van was very comfortable and Mihaela was a great driver. Mihaela and Agnieszka were wonderful and knowledgeable tour guides and we appreciated the opportunity to experience Istria with them. Read more Written 31 May 2018

Mihaela picked us up from Motovun where we were staying and took us to our first winery, then we explored the town of Groznjan. It was a beautiful artist town with beautiful views and picturesque streets. After another winery we had a 4-course lunch and wrapped up the day with our final winery. All the wineries were beautiful, unique, and had delicious wines that are specific to the Istrian region. We also had snacks of cheeses, meats, bread and olive oil and more at each winery. The lunch was delicious and somewhere we wouldn’t have found on our own. I would highly recommend booking a tour, Mihaela and Agnieszka made the day memorable and it was one of the best days of our trip!
