As the name suggests, American Cruise Lines sails exclusively on the rivers and coastlines of the United States. Popular cruises visit destinations along the Mississippi River, on the Hudson River, throughout New England , and lining the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line also tours Alaska , the Southeast coast including Florida , and the Puget Sound between Washington state and the Canadian border.

What to expect: American Cruise Lines operates 19 relatively new small ships and river vessels (the average ship is about 5 years old), ranging from modern riverboats to small coastal ships to authentic paddlewheelers. Comfortable cabins can accommodate up to three people per room, and all ships offer single staterooms designed exclusively for solo travelers . Each room boasts picture windows, a spacious bathroom and – in some cases – a private balcony. In the ships' public spaces, cruisers can enjoy daily onboard entertainment like jazz and blues performances, as well as presentations by historians and area experts.

The line promises an all-American experience. As such, you can expect to find American staff aboard the American-built ships as well as food that pays homage to the destinations you will visit, from New Orleans -style andouille sausage gumbo to New England-inspired seafood boils. Complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres are served every night prior to dinner; all meals, snacks, and wine and beer are included in the base fare. A family-owned business founded in 2002, AmaWaterways operates 29 river cruise boats that welcome 150 passengers on average.

The cruise line aims to provide excursion-rich experiences and offers unique themed sailings for passengers with certain interests. Wine-themed voyages are perfect for oenophiles wishing to explore some of Europe's most popular wine regions, while a concierge golf program will transport passengers from one famous golf course to the next. Or, opt for a holiday river cruise to visit magical Christmas markets around Europe. In 2024, AmaWaterways will offer three new Black history-themed itineraries.

What to expect: On board, guests can expect cabins suitable for couples or single travelers, as well as a set amount of connectible rooms designed for multigenerational families. Staterooms are spacious, with perks like bathrobes, slippers and plush bedding. Cabins can feature up to two balconies with AmaWaterways' twin balcony design, which allows for a full, step-out balcony alongside a French balcony with sliding glass doors. Avalon Waterways sails 19 riverboats along popular thoroughfares like the Danube, the Rhone, the Seine, the Nile, the Rhine, the Moselle, the Mekong, the Ganges and more. In 2024, it will also sail the Douro River in Portugal.

What to expect: Launched in 2004, Avalon stands out for its spacious vessels – known as Suite Ships – which feature some of the largest rooms in the river cruise industry and beds that face wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows, providing panoramic views. Additional stateroom perks include complimentary breakfast in bed, L'Occitane toiletries, sitting areas, ample storage space and mattress toppers.

Travel company Tauck wears multiple hats: It operates small-ship voyages around the world, land tours across seven continents, small group journeys for an average of 24 travelers at a time, family tours and – finally – European river cruises. Six new river itineraries in Europe are on the docket for 2024. Take your pick from nine river vessels to explore popular waterways like the Douro, the Moselle, the Rhine, the Danube and the Rhone.

What to expect: All-inclusive fares cover shore excursions, onboard activities and entertainment, gratuities, beverages and more. Plus, Tauck offers exclusive access to unforgettable experiences like wine tastings at private vineyards and gala dinners in historic castles.

More than 80% of the staterooms feature French balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing for excellent views. Other in-room amenities may include adjustable climate controls, satin linens, pillow-top mattresses, terry cloth robes and more. Outside of your cabin, you'll find perks such as a sun deck, a putting green, enrichment programs like cooking demonstrations, a fitness center and complimentary bikes for onshore exploring.

Tauck caters to affluent, English-speaking cruisers – primarily Americans in the 55-and-older age group – though you may also find families with adult children on board. The line appeals most to travelers who prefer all the details of their trip to be taken care of for them, versus those who like to plan activities independent of the cruise line.

Previously known as Emerald Waterways, Emerald Cruises transports travelers across some of the most popular rivers in Europe and Asia, including the Danube, the Rhine, the Douro and the Mekong.

What to expect: The cruise fare covers all meals, beverages with lunch and dinner, daily shore excursions − which include more physically rigorous options called EmeraldACTIVE – Wi-Fi access and gratuities.

Emerald operates nine river vessels, all of which boast luxurious public spaces and accommodations with en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. Common-area amenities span heated indoor pools, sun decks, spa and wellness facilities, and a variety of eateries. Onboard fitness classes are available, as are other forms of entertainment. On shore, cruisers can borrow bicycles to explore historic city centers.

Typical clientele aboard Emerald Cruises' voyages includes American and British passengers around retirement age, though some younger travelers may make an appearance as well. Children 12 and older are permitted on board and on tours, but there are no kids clubs or designated activities for younger cruisers. Special rooms and dinner reservations are available for solo travelers.

What travelers say: Cruisers on recent sailings – especially first-time sailors – enjoyed their experiences on Emerald Cruises. High points included the attentive crew members and the stress-free booking and planning process. However, some felt that customer service and communication were subpar.

From the Danube to the Mekong, Australian travel company Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours offers lavish, all-inclusive river sailings with an emphasis on customization. The more upscale sister brand of Emerald Cruises, Scenic affords travelers the opportunity to do as much or as little as they want while on board and ashore.

What to expect: Enrichment activities are hand-picked by the line's "Journey Designers," and vessels provide a top-notch level of service thanks to their high crew-to-passenger ratios. In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 160 to 510 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers were pleased with their experiences aboard Scenic's vessels, praising the spacious cabins, pampering butler service, and knowledgeable crew members and tour guides. However, some travelers were particularly disappointed with the food.

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

For arts and culture lovers, the eight-day Music Cities Cruise along the Mississippi, Ohio, and Cumberland rivers presents an opportunity to visit several charming cities and towns in the South. The itinerary is offered on four different 180-passenger ships, including the American Serenade and the classic American Splendor paddle wheeler.

The voyage begins in Memphis, where passengers can visit the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, take in a show at one of the nightclubs along legendary Beale Street, or tour Elvis Presley's mansion, Graceland. This eight-day round-trip cruise takes in historic estates, military sites, and comunities bursting with Cajun and Creole culture. After departing New Orleans, the Viking Mississippi stops in the Louisiana towns of Darrow and St. Francisville, which boast Greek Revival mansions, Spanish moss-draped avenues, and even a haunted house . Day four brings travelers to the oldest city on the river, Natchez, Mississippi, home to a rich African American heritage . The next day, guests can learn about one of the most consequential battles of the Civil War at Vicksburg National Military Park before setting sail for the vibrant capital city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The ship then returns to New Orleans, where guests can stay longer or catch a flight home.

Spotting wildlife and sipping wine go hand-in-hand on this UnCruise Adventures expedition around the Pacific Northwest. The seven-night round-trip journey from Portland isn't your typical leisure cruise. Instead, passengers get to go on rainforest hikes, rafting adventures, winery visits, and scenic kayaking excursions through dramatic canyons.

After the champagne departure from Portland and a stop at Astoria, Oregon, the ship passes through the Columbia River Gorge. Passengers can disembark for a guided hike, then return for a wine tasting with the ship's sommelier. The gourmand adventures continue with an excursion to Walla Walla, Washington, which includes visits to olive oil makers, chocolatiers, and family-owned wine cellars. Day five begins at the mouth of the Palouse River, where guests can kayak or paddleboard. The next day, passengers can visit Columbia Hills State Park and Rowena Plateau on foot or by skiff boat while enjoying river dips, farm-to-fork delights, and a wine tour and tasting. Guests then disembark at The Dalles, Oregon, for whitewater rafting or a relaxing winery tour. The adventure ends with a farewell dinner back at Portland.

Staterooms vary from ship to ship, but one thing is certain, it’s guaranteed to be your home away from home for a few days. Let’s get acquainted with some staterooms and suites that might be on your ship.

Suites are often situated in the most desirable location on the ship: on the top deck, either right in the front or back (for ultimate panoramic views) or midship (for stability). Typically suites are the largest of the staterooms onboard, some having more amenities than others.  Standard Size:  295 - 600 sq. ft.

Dual balcony stateroom

The Dual Balcony Stateroom combines your walk-out veranda and seating area with a french balcony to enjoy the sights while sitting indoors. Standard Size: 175 - 215 sq. ft.

French balcony stateroom

These staterooms will have a floor to ceiling glass door/slider that opens to allow fresh air to flow through. You will not be able to stand outside and there is no seating area outdoors. Standard Size: 175 - 215 sq. ft.

Balcony stateroom

Some ships offer a full-sized veranda and seating area outdoors through a floor-to-ceiling glass door. These balconies are generally 3-4 feet deep and 10-16 feet in length depending on the stateroom size. Standard Size: 175 - 215 sq. ft.

Window stateroom

These staterooms are on the lower level of the ship and the windows are positioned above water level. Please note that some operators refer to window staterooms as river-view rooms. The windows are usually about 5 feet above the floor, which is shoulder height for most. This window does not open. Standard Size: 125 - 170 sq. ft.

Single stateroom

This is a specially designed stateroom for solo travellers which has grown in popularity in recent years. The perk? Travellers don’t have to pay for a single supplement fee. Please note this category is extremely limited in availability and do not exist on all ships.   Standard Size: 120 - 160 sq. ft.

Your River Cruise trips questions, answered

When will i receive my travel documents.

You can expect to receive your travel documents approximately 3-4 weeks prior to departure  once you have paid for your cruise. Your documents usually include eTicket receipts, itineraries, and other essential information for your adventure.

Are shore excursions and meals included?

Most cruises on TourRadar include breakfast, lunch, and dinner served on board, with the exception of only a few operators. Depending on your river cruise operator, shore excursions may be included in the cost of your adventure. Please contact your TourRadar Cruise Consultant for a full list of inclusions.

When and where do I board the ship?

All embarkation details are included within your final travel documents. Typically boarding starts at 3:00 pm to allow the crew enough time to prepare your stateroom and get the ship ready for your cruise. Weather, water levels, and ship scheduling can influence the final docking location for your ship, so please wait until you receive your final travel documents before you arrange flights or accommodations. 

Are transfers to and from the port included?

Some river cruise operators include complimentary arrival and departure transfers within your total tour cost. If transfers are not included, please contact your TourRadar Cruise Consultant to purchase airport transfers.

What facilities will be in my room?

Most staterooms feature a good-sized bed, towels, hairdryers, a writing desk, charging ports, and ample storage space. Some ships also have laundry facilities onboard for an extra charge. Of course, these can vary from room to room and ship to ship, so please check out the Ship Details on your adventure—or contact your TourRadar Cruise Consultant—to see the full list of inclusions.

Can I take a wheelchair onboard?

Some ships are unable to accommodate travelers in wheelchairs due to difficulties with embarking and disembarking the ship, no onboard elevators, and narrow doorways on board. For travelers who use a collapsible wheelchair, they must be stored in the stateroom, which can sometimes be a tight squeeze. Please contact your TourRadar Cruise Consultant for more information.

Can I board the ship early?

If the ship is already docked, many river cruise companies will allow you to store your luggage onboard   prior to embarkation,  allowing you to explore your embarkation destination before you begin your cruise. As the crew needs to get the ship ready for your cruise, travelers are unable to stay on the ship during this time and need to wait until the embarkation time to board the ship.

Can I cruise as a solo traveler?

Yes, absolutely! However, please keep in mind that ship cabins and staterooms are designed for double occupancy and do not offer the option to share with another solo traveler, so generally, a mandatory single supplement is required . The only exception is a cruise with Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection , as they pair solo travelers together on their river cruises. See adventures with no single supplements

Boat cruises on the Riverwalk are an amazing way to see the river and downtown San Antonio.  The tours are operated by Go Rio Cruises and take place from 10am to 10pm, 365 days a year.  The tour of the main Downtown area lasts about 35 to 40 minutes and is a wonderful way to learn about the origins of the river and our downtown history.  Go Rio offers 3 convenient ticket and boarding locations at various positions on the River Walk. Riding the River Shuttle

Just trying to get from place to place as you explore San Antonio attractions? Look for the GO RIO Shuttle signs that are located along the River Walk downtown and on the Museum Reach. Boats are labeled with GO RIO Shuttle signs. Shuttles run approximately every 60 minutes. Shuttle service begins at 12 noon. Tickets also available for purchase on the boat or at any GO RIO Ticket booth.

Lunch and Dinner Cruises Lunch and dinner cruises are done on a charter basis. There are currently no Riverwalk restaurants that offer reservation based “community” type lunch or dinner cruises where you can join others on a boat for a meal.  To book a charter lunch or dinner cruise, you first contact a Riverwalk restaurant and they will assist you in chartering the boat and cater the meal for you. Chartered dinner and lunch cruises seat a maximum of 20 guests but most recommend 16 to 18 people for comfort.  It is a wonderful and charming way to see the Riverwalk. Cocktail Cruises Cocktail cruises are also done on a charter basis and catered by any number of Riverwalk restaurants. They can seat a maximum of 30 to 40 guests and can be configured for drinks and appetizers.

26 Helpful Things to Know your First Time on a River Cruise

You'll never forget your first time on a river cruise! It'll either be something you absolutely cannot wait to do again or it may be an experience you feel like you did once and it was enough.

It's not a surprise we instantly fell in love with it after our first river cruise experience. And having gone on a river cruise as first-timers, we definitely have helpful tips for you to know before you go.

1. Layout of River Cruise Ships

You may be surprised to learn that there are only three to four decks on river cruise ships. (This may especially be a surprise if you're accustomed to ocean cruises with an excess of ten decks.)

The bottom level usually has windows (or what you would equate to portholes). The upper deck cabins have balconies or windows with better views. Not all cruise ships have balconies, but the great ones do!

The bottom deck, which is usually labeled Deck 1, is the least desirable. The upper deck is usually the most desirable. (The deck names vary on Adventures by Disney river cruises and AmaWaterways ships, which gives them names like Piano, Violin, and Cello.)

Generally, the top deck of river cruise ships is reserved for lounge chairs and tables with chairs. There are fun things on the top deck of some ships though.

For example, there are herb gardens on top of many Viking river cruise ships. On Emerald Destiny, we enjoyed a bit of putt-putt golf one day and tic-tac-toe. AmaWaterways has a pool on their top deck!

There's always one restaurant (if not two) on board, and a bar and lounge area. Many ships also have a dedicated gym and a spa room where massages and facials are given. There is often a hairdresser area where you can sometimes get a manicure or pedicure as well.

2. Sometimes you'll have a good view from your cabin, and sometimes you won't

People sometimes ask us, “What side of the ship should I book my stateroom?” The answer is: it doesn't really matter.

There's no difference between a cabin on the port side or starboard side because it's likely your river cruise ship will dock on both sides. This means that you'll be facing land at some point when docked and facing the river other times.

If you really wanted to get into the nitty-gritty of what side will be facing landmarks and when you'd need info only the captain knows. In other words, you'd have to know what dock the river cruise ship was assigned at your port destination. Then you could know what side of the river might have a better view. But that is nearly impossible to find out.

It's such a trivial matter, though. You can always go to a public area of the ship to enjoy a different view. The benefit of a small cruise ship is that it'll just take you minutes, if not seconds, to walk there.

3. What area of the river cruise ship is better: back or middle?

In terms of the area of the river cruise ship that's better from back (aft) to middle (midship), there's not a huge difference. If you want to be closer to the action (that is to say, closer walking distance to the restaurant and area you disembark at ports) book a cabin closer to midship.

We'll say, however, that the closer you are to midship and the higher the deck, it's likely the costlier your cabin will be. That cost difference could be significant or insignificant based on your budget. The closer you get to lower decks and the aft of the ship, the closer you are to the engines and a little more noise when you sail.

4. You may be surprised when your ship docks against another river cruise ship your first time on a river cruise

It was surprising to be docked so close by another ship during our first time on a river cruise. We could have opened our window and touched the neighboring ship's window! The boats were literally touching.

We came to find out this is very common in river cruising. You may even need to walk through the lobby area of another cruise ship to get ashore when you're docked. (It's kind of fun though! It's always interesting to see what the interior of other ships look like.)

5. If the water is too low, the river cruise ship may not be able to sail

Ships need water to sail. And while river cruise ship boats are flat, allowing them to sail in incredibly shallow water, sometimes the depth is too shallow for safe sailing with people on it. So they need to remove the weight of everyone onboard and then bus the people from one port to another.

This should not affect your meals or where you sleep. But if the water is too low they may bus you from one port to another in order to get the ship through the low-water area.

6. It's very unlikely you'll get motion sickness

We've experienced it firsthand: motion sickness on huge ocean cruise ships! But on river cruises, there's hardly any motion of the river. Which means it's very unlikely you'll experience seasickness.

The boat hardly moves when it's docked and certainly doesn't feel like it's shaking side-to-side when it sails. It simply feels like it's moving forward and getting you to your next destination port.

7. You'll be shocked at how my river cruise ships exist

If you sail a popular river during your first time on a river cruise, you may especially be surprised at just how many river cruise ships exist! It's most astonishing to see in popular ports, like Budapest on the Danube River.

Since river cruising isn't as widely popular as ocean cruising, it's talked about less often. But there are SO MANY river cruise companies and ships.

Why don't we hear about them in the United States?

A big reason is that a lot of them don't market to United States consumers. There are German river cruise companies, French companies, and British ones too, for example. They all heavily market to their own geographical areas. This means we never really hear of them…but they're out there!

8. Onboard evening entertainment is limited but enriching

Your first time on a river cruise may leave you wondering what there is to do after dinner your first night. But don't be surprised if you don't have a plethora of activities to choose from in the evenings. However, you'll find that cruise lines often bring local talent on board to entertain the guests.

After dinner, you may want to grab a drink and play a scheduled trivia game in the lounge, for example. Or perhaps there's a movie playing on board in a public area. (If not, there are likely movies on your cabin TV.) Or see the scheduled entertainment they bring on the ship for an hour or so.

While there is not a casino onboard, or five bars to choose from like on an ocean ship , or late-night stage show performances, we have never been bored on a river cruise. There are usually great movies on your cabin television if you want to retreat to your room, or you can enjoy a book if you want to spend some solo time with your Kindle .

If it's your first time on one, our advice is to enjoy not having to decide between a ton of activities after dinner. There's beauty in fewer options.

9. There is usually a small gym on board and often a track on the top deck

Expect the gym to be “petite” on your first river cruise. It's likely the size of one cabin. The gym is there if you need it and gets the job done, but excellent onboard gyms aren't why anyone we know books a river cruise.

Often, there is scheduled morning yoga in one area of the ship outside of the gym. A track encircles most top decks so you can walk laps on board if you like.

If you love to exercise but don't necessarily want to do it on the ship, rest assured you'll be able to participate in group hikes or bike rides in ports. Or, you can exercise on your own in port cities you visit during the river cruise.

10. Small river cruise ships mean that rooms become multipurpose

Spaces are utilized in multiple ways on a small river cruise ship. It's likened to a small living space, where space becomes more precious.

On Emerald Destiny and Emerald Sky with Emerald Cruises, the pool area turns into a cinema space at night where movies are shown. (The top of the pool is closed with a retractable floor.) The bar near the pool becomes a popcorn concession stand.

11. There are usually one, two, or three restaurants – not ten

Logically, because of the small size of river cruise ships, there's not an abundance of restaurant options. There's usually one or two if not three (which would be generous).

We loved our Emerald Destiny river cruise food experience when we sailed the Danube nonetheless; eating all our meals in the same restaurant didn't phase us one bit.

Your first time on a river cruise won't be affected by one or three restaurants, though. The more interesting thing during a river cruise is the people you connect with and the food you eat! Not necessarily where you eat it.

On that note, there are usually one or two bar areas on river cruise ships too.

12. Embarking on your cruise takes minutes, not hours

When you arrive at your river cruise ship's point of embarkation, you simply walk onto the ship and check-in. You don't go through a huge terminal like ocean cruises, or through metal detectors, or put your bags through x-ray machines. You just walk on and walk up to the front desk and check-in. It's a beautiful thing!

13. You will dock steps away from city centers in small towns and be bused into the city center of others

Your first time on a river cruise may reveal how lovely it is to be so close to the center of a historic destination. We were a lovely 20-minute walk from the center of Melk, Austria when we docked there on the Danube River.

Conversely, we had to be bused into the center of Vienna, Austria during the same river cruise. This was because the river cruises dock in the commercial area of Vienna.

14. The gangway is short: it only takes seconds or minutes to get off the ship

Part of the beauty of small ship cruising is that you can be off the ship in 120 seconds or less. It just depends on how fast you walk!

We have never found a long line forming to disembark the ship. And there's certainly even less waiting to get back on board when you're done visiting a city for the day and want to come back onboard.

15. You have to scan some sort of ID that signals if you're on or off the ship

You'll an ID when you check into the river cruise upon arrival. This could be as simple as a small plastic card with your name on it along with a QR code, for example.

After we checked into our river cruise on the Danube River in October, we arrived at our Emerald Destiny cabin to find our ID cards on the desk.

You don't necessarily need these IDs around the ship; we only needed them to check into and out of the ship when we were in port. This is so the ship can identify who is on board and who is off. Essentially, when they're ready to leave port to head to the next destination they want to know everyone is on board.

16. You can use the river cruise ship bicycles for free

If there are bicycles on board, the crew will unload them in port and allow guests to use them if there isn't a scheduled tour or activity with them. If you love cycling, this is a beautiful way to explore a town. This is included in the cost of your river cruise .

17. You'll quickly learn what “Quiet Voxes” are and what they're used for

Shoreside tours during a river cruise are carried out with the help of little audio devices, called Quiet Voxes . They’re actually quite amazing!

They allow groups of people to be on the same radio channel and listen in together as a guide leads a group tour. Each device is equipped with one earpiece, which is in a new and sealed package upon arrival.

Your Cruise Director will remind you to take your Quiet Vox for a morning tour before leaving the ship. You'll simply scan a number on a card with the tip of the device (and wait for it to vibrate to signal it registered) to get on the same channel as your guide.

You'll quickly learn to remember to plug the devices into their docking station as soon as you return to your cabin.

18. The smaller numbers in crew and the guest count will be incredibly rewarding

You'll love how quickly you get acquainted with both the crew and other guests onboard a river cruise. This is thanks to river cruises having small numbers: smaller guest capacity and less onboard crew. Surely, you'll feel the positive effects of this during your first river cruise and every time you sail thereafter.

The guest-to-crew ratio is often 2:1 or 3:1, which means you'll feel extra special when the crew does things like call you by name pretty quickly, or the captain joins you for a meal during a Captain's Dinner, which happens once during many cruise itineraries.

Because you run into the same people over and over again – whether at a neighboring table during river cruise meals , or on the same group tours, or even walking around the small port cities – a friendship forms faster.

Fewer people in the crew also mean that they may do multiple things. For example, your onboard massage therapist may also be your yoga instructor. It all contributes to getting to know one another better, and faster. And it's such a rewarding feeling to feel like your river cruise ship has become a home, even if temporarily.

19. You'll experience the exhilaration of going through locks during your first time on a river cruise 

Locks are human-made devices in rivers that help ships move from one water elevation to another. They're pretty much concrete feats of physics and science. It's a wonder to experience going through a lock for the first time on a river cruise.

If you go through one lock, it's likely you'll go through more. We went through approximately 15 locks during our Danube River cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest. Our Cruise Director during that sailing informed us that the number of locks you go through sailing from Amsterdam to Budapest is 68. SIXTY-EIGHT! Wow.

We enjoyed experiencing the locks from two places in particular: our cabin, where it very oddly feels like you're being lowered into (or rising above) a concrete box. We admit it feels cool at first then feels a little morbid. (If you're claustrophobic and in a lock, perhaps it's best to close your cabin curtains.)

The other cool place to be is the top deck. That way you can likely get a 360-degree view of what's going on around you. You can often see the captain maneuvering the ship through the lock too, then see the lock gates open when the ship is ready to sail on. It's very cool!

20. Guest ages are mixed, but they tend to skew older

We have found that it's true that there tend to be more guests of older generations onboard river cruises. However, there is always a mix of ages no matter the ratio of older to younger guests. We have always had the most delightful conversations and interactions with guests, regardless of their ages, on river cruises. We've also always been fond of getting to know the crew.

If there's anything to know regarding ages your first time on a river cruise, it's potentially that you'll find more older people who have time off from work (or they are retired) and the money to go on small ship cruises, more so than younger generations.

This also depends on the river cruise line. More modern and active river cruise companies are going to have some more younger people on board because that's who they market to.

21. Hand sanitizer is everywhere

If it's your first time on a river cruise but not your first time on a cruise, overall, this won't surprise you. But if it's your first time on a cruise, in general, you may be surprised that there is hand sanitizer available everywhere.

We admit that it's not as shocking to find hand sanitizer everywhere these days following COVID-19.

However, it's nice to know there will be plenty of hand sanitizer on board, just like there was before COVID, no matter when you sail. (For this reason and many more, we think cruises are the safest way to travel .)

22. There is usually just one dinner seating

One dinner seating is available to guests on most river cruises. This is opposed to multiple seatings or dine-any-time models on ocean cruise ships.

There are exceptions to this rule. An example would be when the ship accommodated two dinner seatings on Emerald Cruises Danube River Cruise, while we were in Vienna.

One seating was for guests who were going to see a concert in town that evening and a later dinner seating was for guests who were foregoing the concert. In general, you'll find most river cruises have just one time for dinner because it helps things run more efficiently.

23. Room service on river cruise ships vary

Not all river cruise ships have room service. Some do, some don't.

We didn't have room service as a food option on our Emerald Destiny river cruise , but we didn't miss it. We were well fed. And the dining room on a river cruise ship is always just a one to two-minute walk away!

24. So much is included with a river cruise…but you can still do your own thing

There are a ton of things included in your river cruise for the cost , like guided tours in port. But that doesn't mean you can't do your own thing.

For example, if your ship is in a city where you want to have lunch on land, you can! There's no need to go back to the ship just because lunch is included. (We don't blame you if you want to go to back the ship for lunch, though, if it's in an accessible location and you technically already paid for it.)

The morning we docked in Passau, Germany, during our Emerald Destiny Danube River cruise was THICK with fog. There was an optional, included hike to an iconic fortress in town that morning. But Dan and I felt uneasy about going because we were doubtful we'd see a great view from the fortress's elevation with the morning fog.

Instead, we walked around on our own. It was the best decision for us and the universe rewarded us with an amazing find in town: a Dackelmuseum!

(We're obsessed with dachshund dogs. We never thought we'd come across a dachshund museum in Passau , but we did. And we discovered it thanks to being able to do our own thing whenever we wanted during the cruise.)

We ended up doing the hike on our own, later that day. And the view was spectacular!

25. You will want to pack prepared with layers

No matter the time of year you go on a river cruise you want to pack prepared for layers. Of course, your river cruise packing list may vary in terms of how thick your outer coat is, like if you're going to Europe, for example, in July versus December.

But the weather fluctuates and you want to be prepared with things like cardigans or a lightweight jacket no matter the time of year.

26. Packing comfortable walking shoes

It may go without saying, but just in case: you'll walk a lot if you're physically able to, like any trip to amazing cities and towns. So be prepared with great walking shoes that you have broken in long before your trip so you know the shoes won't give you blisters!

Dan and I always travel with a pair of all -black sneakers because they match everything and we can walk miles in them.

This was a font of information! I am not sure is you know if the divider panel between balconies on a river cruise an be removed. We are traveling with another couple and requested that on our ocean cruise. Can’t find info on that… thanks

Hi Sue! We do not know of a river cruise line that has a removable divider between balconies for staterooms that are next to each other. The largest balconies we’ve seen on river cruises in staterooms/cabins are in suites, because they’re usually longer and can fit four people. We know that’s not the same thing. However, there are plenty of areas on a river cruise to enjoy outdoor areas as a group. And, overall, river cruises are much more intimate than ocean cruises.

If we find out about a river cruise line has this feature, we will definitely let you know! We just don’t know of any that exist right now with that feature! Great suggestion for the cruise ship builders out there though. 😁

River cruises are typically 7 days but you can find shorter options on the Mississippi, for example. First time on a river cruise and I found your information very valuable thank you my question is about the rooms. Do you really stay in your room and look out the window except maybe in the morning with coffee I am traveling with friends who may pick a cheaper state room hence the windows are really up above and you can’t see out much. I wonder if you really need full wall windows on the cruise to enjoy it. Please let me know.

The answer to your question, for us, lies in your cruise itinerary and how much you’re actually sailing. For example, our Bordeaux River Cruise didn’t sail very much at all so we found we were in our room less time because we were onshore more.

But on a Danube River cruise, for example, that sails more, we loved having our room to spend time in during sailing hours and watch the scenery from our balcony or windows. Additionally, it depends how much time you want to spend together, with your friends. If it’s a lot of time, you’ll all likely hang out in common areas anyway so they won’t be in their bedroom. If they can’t see out their bedroom windows, it’s not a big deal – the cabin category may have made it possible for them to be on the cruise(the most important thing) and they can get morning coffee at breakfast and look out the windows in the dining room. Or they’ll simply grab their morning coffee from the common area on the ship where the coffee machine is, then enjoy the public lounges and balconies with plenty of great views as they sip! At night, you can’t see much from river boats anyway so the views don’t matter.

It’s really day time sailing when the sun is up that’s key. And, again, it depends how much your cruise sails and how much you’ll want to be in your room vs. common areas on the ship.

Did first river cruise in August this year, had a French balcony, Hardly opened the curtains and never opened the balcony ,only in the cabin to sleep or shower/change. Just looking at booking for next year and considering booking the lower deck at a saving of £800pp, that’s another short holiday

I am scheduled for my first River Cruise (Avalon-Rhine) in June 2023. I’m a 74 widower, traveling alone but in excellent health. Avalon offers 3 excursion activities for each stop – “Active” versus “Discovery” verses “Classic”. I’ve mostly chosen Active as I’m not much into Wine/beer or Pastry tasting or being shuttled on a bus. But under ‘active’ they also mentioned the word ‘strenuous’. I guess I’d like an idea of “their” definition of ‘strenuous’. I’m physically more like a mid 60 year old but it’s been 40 years since I’ve done a 15 + mile bike trip. I don’t think I can make it to the top of Mt. Whitney or the bottom of the Grand Canyon anymore! 🙂 Your prior experience & observation could be very helpful. Thank you.

Hi Steve! You’re going to love it! It’s so easy to make friends on a river cruise. When people hear you’re traveling alone, they’ll be keen to invite you to be a part of their group if you like! It’s a very friendly atmosphere. And good for you for traveling as a 74 widower! So many people are scared to travel alone. But there’s so much to always explore and discover in the world no matter the travel group or age. In our experience, the activities manager is usually sensitive to the needs of the group. Though we haven’t sailed with Avalon, most cruise lines are similar in that way. Simply ask about the level of activity in more detail when you’re onboard. If for some reason it’s not what you expected even before your excursion but after the conversation with the onboard team, they should let you change the excursion to one more befitting. We’re doing Danube from Budapest to Passau in mid June. Weather at night is cold. Do I need warm clothes inside for dinner or will a top/shirt & pashmina suffice? Thanks!

Hi Cheryl! That’s such a great question. It can be warm or cold at night during summer in Hungary/Germany but of course you’ll likely be inside or simply on the ship in the evenings with an outlier here or there if the ship is in port late or overnight on your particular cruise to explore the port a bit more. We’ve always been fine with a pashmina/cardigan that time of year in Europe in that area. Sometimes it’s colder on the top deck of the ship, outside on the water, but if that’s the case we just go inside! Thank you for all of the great info. We want to do a river cruise in celebration of our 45th Anniversary. We’ve never done a river cruise, in fact, we’ve never been to Europe. We’re not seasoned travelers. This is a big celebration for us so we want it to be nice. We are active (67 yrs. & 71 yrs.). Is there any way to somehow include 2-3 days of Paris in there? Which river cruise line would you recommend for us and which cruise would you recommend for our first time?

On USA river cruise ships, are there cabins with two beds to accommodate friends traveling together?

Great question, Carol. We know that American Cruise Lines can do two twin beds. It might be two double beds for suites, but we’re not 100% sure. But we do know with certainty that non-suite cabins can do two twin beds so you can comfortably travel with a friend. Hope that helps! – Mikkel + Dan

We have traveled on our own in Europe for many years. We are now looking at a river cruise. I have back issues where some days are worse than others. Standing is sometimes difficult for me. We are looking at Grand Circle. Any idea how strenuous the excursions are, and on a “bad” day can we skip the excursion?

You should be fine to opt out and stay on the ship or explore the port on your own, anywhere, as long as you’re back on the ship for all aboard time before it sails on to the next location. Hi Guys, My wife and I are thinking of a river cruise in 2024/5. We have never wanted to do ocean cruises due to the size of the ships and the amount of people on board. What would the average number of people on board be? My wife and I tend to travel a lot with only carry on luggage. My wife is very organised. We were wondering if there was a requirement to ‘dress’ for dinner. The trip we are planning would also include Canada and parts of Asia so we will be carrying under the plane luggage. Hi John – you’ll love river cruising! It really depends what ship you book with what cruise line, but on average river cruise ships have between 100-150 guests. Asia river cruise ships are even smaller. We travel with carry-on luggage only so we completely understand! Dinner isn’t dressy on river cruises. Think of it like business casual, which is the dressiest it gets! But you can wear nice dark jeans or slacks and a nice top (like a button down) to dinner if you want. It’s pretty casual! Are European river cruises right for families? Here are the pros, cons and best options for kids

Ocean cruises are ideal family vacations, with kids clubs, all-ages activities on and off the ship and lots of family-friendly dining options. If you've enjoyed a Mediterranean cruise with your kids, you might think a European river cruise would be equally great for a school break trip.

It makes sense. On a river cruise, like an ocean cruise, you have the ease of unpacking once while visiting multiple destinations in a short span of time. Someone else has planned the itinerary and arranged tours for you to choose from, so busy parents have fewer logistics to figure out. Meals are served on board, so you don't need to stress about making restaurant reservations in foreign cities.

There's just one problem. Traditional river cruises, in Europe and other destinations like Egypt and Asia, target older travelers, especially retirees. Middle-aged couples might also enjoy food- and wine-themed sailings or guided tours in European cities, but river ships and river cruise itineraries were decidedly not created with kids and teens in mind.

In fact, some river cruise lines have age minimums to sail. On Avalon Waterways, it's 8 years old; on Viking , it's 18.

If you've been dreaming of river cruising with your kids, don't despair. Certain lines offer European river cruises for families, with meals and activities designed for an intergenerational crowd. The experience is different from an ocean cruise, but for the right family on the right trip, it can be a great way to introduce your kids to European destinations they'd never visit on a Mediterranean or Baltic cruise.

As you decide what type of cruise best suits your travel preferences, here's what you need to know about regular European river cruises, the pros and cons of family sailings, and the top choices for river cruises with kids.

Why regular European river cruises might not be right for your family

Beyond the age restrictions, there are a few other reasons why a typical river cruise is not ideal for families with younger kids and teens.

Cabins are designed for couples

River ships are built assuming two to a room. Cabins offered on river cruises, even suites, usually lack pull-down berths, sofa beds and bunks in which kids can share a room with their family. Select ships might offer a few cabins with a third berth or connecting rooms, but you'll need to choose the right ship and book early to lock in a special cabin. Be prepared to book two separate cabins if you're a family of four.

River ships don't have kids clubs

River ships must be small to fit through locks and under bridges on Europe's rivers. They typically feature only four decks, including a sun deck on the top. The smaller ships save all of their space for cabins, adult lounges and dining rooms. Not only are there no physical kids clubs , but save for the upper deck, there simply isn't a lot of space for kids to run around.

Many river ships lack swimming pools

Only a few river ships have a "pool." That's in quotation marks because the pools are often so small they aren't bigger than a large hot tub. You might find a putting green or giant chess on the sun deck, but mainly, you'll find chairs and a short walking track. Adults might find the options limiting, too, especially on a hot summer day in Europe, but the cruise line expects passengers to spend the day exploring quaint villages.

Kid-friendly activities and options are limited

River cruises are great for offering bicycles for passengers to enjoy along paved river paths. Alas, these don't come with infant or toddler seats, and kid-size bikes are a rarity. Also a rarity: foods kids can easily enjoy at dinner if they prefer chicken nuggets and pizza. Excursions offered to passengers are also designed for adults rather than kids, with lots of walking tours to historic sites or museums. You won't find kid-focused activities like crafts or movie nights either.

Families are in the minority on board

Even if all of the above doesn't bother you, you'll have to be OK with being the lone family in a sea of couples. Your kids likely won't find peers to play with on a regular European river cruise. You might even get some side-eye from cruisers who chose a river cruise instead of an ocean cruise to avoid children.

Why you should consider a family river cruise in Europe

River cruise providers have realized that families do want to explore Europe's rivers together. Often, grandparents who have become fans of this style of travel want to take their grandkids, but they need a more family-friendly option. So select lines such as AmaWaterways (in conjunction with Adventures by Disney), Tauck and Uniworld open up select departures to families with kids and teens. Multigenerational groups and travelers without children are also welcome.

For these sailings, the lines tailor the activities in port, food options and onboard programming to a broader audience, with kid-friendly additions. These European river cruises can make fabulous family vacations for the following reasons.

Small ships create a social environment for kids and adults

If you're used to 4,000-person ships or larger, a 200-person river cruise is a big change. What's nice about a smaller passenger count is that you quickly meet your shipmates at communal dinner tables, excursions or happy hour in the lounge. And you'll definitely see those people again, as opposed to on an ocean cruise where you might never see the nice family you met on tour out and about on the ship.

On my family river cruise, I found that the relatively small number of kids and teens on board meant that same-aged kids would hang out all together, even if they wouldn't be fast friends in a larger setting. My son is not super-social, but the other teens would always bang on his door and ask him to join them playing Roblox on their devices in the lounge or giant chess on the sun deck. And with just a few hangouts (sun deck, lounge, dining room), I could let my younger daughter run off with her buddies and not worry about finding her again. (We did set up ground rules regardless.)

Extra crew members are on hand to assist families

Several river cruise lines that host family cruises will bring on extra staff to help out with kids and families. Called Family Hosts or Adventure Guides, these crew members will organize special dinners and activities for the younger cruisers, give suggestions about the best snacks and activities to discover during free time ashore and generally assist families with their travel needs.

Because the lines dedicate certain ships to the family sailings, they make sure the regular crew are fans of kids, as well. On my AmaWaterways sailing, the hotel director and the cruise manager clearly loved having young cruisers on board. Waiters made paper masks and napkin dolls to entertain the littlest sailors at dinner.

The ships are the most family-friendly in the fleet

You can be sure that the river ship chosen for the family sailings will be the most family-friendly of the bunch. That means you're likely to be on a ship with cabins featuring a third berth, connecting rooms or a pool. The cruise line might bring aboard kid-size bikes and helmets for these sailings or dedicate part of the lounge as a kids club or hangout. Menus will be tweaked to offer kid-friendly options, such as hot dogs or mac and cheese.

You get a choice of activities you might not find on your own

River cruise lines pay as much attention to off-ship activities as onboard ones on family sailings. You might find more active options like canoeing, trips to amusement parks or visits to open-air museums with hands-on activities or crafts. We even visited a chocolate museum.

But it's not all junior fun. The lines will still offer wine-tasting tours, pub crawls, museum visits, and slower-paced activities for child-free adults or families who want to split up for the day to pursue different interests. Just know that you can't leave your child on the ship while you head off to a winery.

Caveats to river cruising with kids

Even when offering a family voyage, the boat often houses kids' programs in spaces originally intended for adults. You won't find video games, movie nights, craft making or fun character interactions — even on an Adventures by Disney river cruise.

Cabins are still small

Fitting three or four to a room on a river ship will be incredibly tight, and you all will have to manage a single small bathroom. Even if you're sailing on a ship that can fit your entire family in one room, you might be more comfortable booking two rooms. On my family river cruise, that meant my daughter and I shared one room and my husband and son another.

Food options are limited

You won't find the abundance of dining venues on a river cruise that you do on a big (or even a small!) oceangoing ship. On our AmaWaterways cruise, we ate nearly all of our meals in the main dining room (waiter-served at dinner, a mix of waiter-served and buffet at breakfast and lunch). A small breakfast buffet was set out in the lounge each morning, and occasionally, a casual waiter-served lunch was available there. Our ship had one specialty restaurant with a set menu but no room service. Between meals, you could order a set tapas plate or afternoon tea service (with little pastries and finger sandwiches) or grab a cookie, but that was it.

River ships don't offer daily babysitting

A perk of ocean cruises is the option to use a babysitter, so mom and dad can enjoy a quiet, romantic dinner on their vacation every once in a while. Even on family river cruises in Europe, couple time is limited. There were kid dinners supervised by crew members on two nights of our trip, but the supervision didn't extend beyond 8 p.m. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but know that you will be spending nearly all your time as a family.

It's a go-go-go schedule

Family river cruises tend to include tours in their fares, which makes planning easy but doesn't always lend itself to a leisurely schedule. Morning tours often require meetups at 7:30 or 8 a.m., and these might be followed by a similarly structured tour after lunch. In many destinations, you might have post-tour free time in the city but only two or three options for when you can return to the ship. Don't expect days of sleeping in and lazing around the sun deck; you will be exploring a new port daily.

River cruises are expensive

European river cruises for families are generally offered by the higher-end cruise lines and will generally cost thousands of dollars per person. Do not expect discounted fares for children. The value is high, with tours, meals, some or all alcoholic drinks, gratuities, airport transfers and/or Wi-Fi included in the price, but even in the lowest-category cabins, a river cruise is a pricy vacation for a family with kids. A family of four can easily pay upward of $20,000 for a weeklong cruise — and that's just the cruise fare.

You don't have many options to offset cruise fares with points and miles; you could pay for a river cruise with a card like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and then use points from the card to offset the charge, but you might get better value transferring your points to pay for a precruise hotel or flight.

Still want to take a family river cruise in Europe? Here are the best options

Adventures by disney.

Adventures by Disney cruises provide bubbly, family-friendly Disney employees to serve as your own tour guides through the sites along the cruise route. Disney has set up some special excursions on each cruise (like strudel making in Vienna and alpine toboggan rides in Germany's Black Forest), and you'll find that extra-special Disney touch accounting for every last detail. Trips are all-inclusive; fares cover excursions, Wi-Fi, gratuities, airport transfers and wine, beer and soda at mealtime.

The AmaWaterways ships used by Disney feature connecting rooms, as well as triples and quads, and have small pools on the sun deck. Cruises take place on the Seine, Rhine and Danube rivers.

Don't let the Disney name fool you: Some Adventures by Disney sailings are adults-only. The rest have a minimum age of 5 years old (though the recommended age is 8-plus), a big difference from Disney Cruise Line. All have subtle Disney touches, but you won't get character appearances or a theme park atmosphere.

If you want that immersive Disney experience with characters galore and a kid-first atmosphere, Disney Cruise Line offers European itineraries every summer on its oceangoing ships.

Tauck Bridges

Tauck was the river line that invented the family-focused cruise back in 2010 with its Tauck Bridges sailings. These special departures are designed specifically for families and are led by a Tauck Director with a proven track record of catering to families. They're offered on select sailings on the Danube, Douro, Rhine, Rhone and Seine rivers.

Tauck will take kids as young as 4 but believes that children ages 8 and up will get the most from excursions such as a geocaching scavenger hunt in Passau, Germany; a ride on the world's steepest cogwheel train above Lake Lucerne, Switzerland; or a cowboy demonstration and lunch at a ranch near Provence, France. The ship does not carry child-size bikes but ensures that smaller bikes are available on cycling excursions operated by local providers.

Each of Tauck's river ships features an entire deck of roomy suites that can sleep four with a pullout sofa. All have plunge pools, putting greens and top-deck grills for cookouts on select evenings (a family favorite).

Tauck recognizes that in multigenerational groups, you don't always get an even number of travelers. Therefore, it waives the single supplement on every Category 1 cabin, so a solo grandparent, relative, nanny or young adult can join the fun without paying double.

Uniworld Generations

Uniworld's luxury cruises open up on select summer dates for eight-day Danube and Rhine River itineraries for families. These Generations Collection cruises work well for multigenerational groups, offering a little something for everyone during excursions. Options might include a visit to the "Schloss Schonbrunn Experience" Children's Museum Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna; a cycling excursion on the Danube Bike Trail; or fun in the Bavarian Forest, Germany's largest national park.

Two Family Hosts plan activities for Junior Cruisers (ages 4 to 12) and teens (ages 13 to 17), including kids-only dinners, cooking classes with the chef, craft workshops and movie nights complete with popcorn. A special space is set up on board for kids and teens with board and video games, movies and treats.

The all-inclusive sailings include kid-friendly menus and complimentary beverages not just at meals, as well as Wi-Fi, gratuities and the use of kid-size and adult bikes and walking sticks ashore. Many of the ships offering family sailings have pools, as well as three-person rooms and connecting cabins.

Beyond Europe, Uniworld offers its family-friendly Generations cruises on Nile River cruises in Egypt in December.

A-Rosa Family Cruises

A-Rosa is a European river cruise line that offers family cruises for an international clientele, especially during summer break and the winter holidays. The main languages on board are German and English, so your family will get European immersion on board and ashore.

The line stands out for its dedicated kids club activities on board, including movie nights, scavenger hunts and pizza baking with the ship's chef. These are led by bilingual youth staff and cater to kids ages 4 to 15 (though there is no minimum age to sail). Additionally, the line offers family discounts; children up to 15 years old can cruise free when sharing a Deck 1 cabin with an adult. Off the ship, families can become history detectives in Vienna, meet camels and ostriches on a farm in Germany, and visit zoos, amusement parks and chocolate museums in multiple destinations.

For the best family experience, book a cruise on A-Rosa Sena, a river ship built with multigenerational travel in mind. It features a dedicated kids club space on board (plus a large spa for adults), family cabins that sleep up to five in a room with bunk beds, a shallow kids pool and a regular pool with onboard swimming lessons for an extra fee, and a kids buffet.

Bottom line

Traditional river cruises are not geared for families with young kids, but families looking for a European river cruise do have options with family-friendly sailings from lines like Tauck, Uniworld and AmaWaterways (run by Adventures by Disney). The smaller ships and busy schedule might not be every family's cup of tea, but they can be a wonderful way to introduce kids to a handful of European countries, cities and towns on one trip.

As a busy working parent, I can say that perhaps the most compelling reason to take a European river cruise is to have someone else plan the itinerary, scout out fun-for-kids activities in port and be ready to offer you a choice of tasty meals when you return. Your kids will enjoy making friends on board, and you can relax without having to navigate a giant megaship.

6 Great Places to Visit Before or After Your European River Cruise

Many river cruises are seven nights in length — a somewhat short stay in Europe after a long transatlantic flight. While cruise lines often offer pre- or post-cruise tours for an added fee, you can also easily visit nearby cities or regions on your own to extend your vacation. It’s a great way to combine tour-centric river cruising with independent exploration. Here are six great places to visit before or after your European river cruise.

1. From Basel, Switzerland: Head to Zurich and Lucerne or the Jungfrau 

If you’re taking a Rhine River cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland (or vice versa), you can add to your Swiss experience by exploring nearby regions. If you love big cities, Zurich is a short train ride away, and from there you can continue on to Lucerne. Prefer smaller towns, outdoor adventure, and epic scenery? The Jungfrau will astound you.

How to get there: Switzerland is only about the size of Maryland, Swiss trains are efficient, and the journey between Basel and Zurich takes an hour — making the city ideal for a pre- or post-cruise stay. From Zurich, it’s just 45 minutes by train to Lucerne. The Jungfrau region — known as the “Top of Europe” — offers views of 401 mountain peaks, a valley with 72 waterfalls, and a sky-high railway. To get there, you’ll take the train from Basel to Interlaken (two hours), then board a Bernese Oberland Railways train to Grindelwald, a scenic trip of about 45 minutes. If you have enough time, you can combine a visit to Zurich and Lucerne with the Jungfrau.  

What to see and do: Zurich may be Switzerland’s largest city, but it is easy to explore on foot. The top historic sights are centered in Altstadt (Old Town) and include Fraumünster church, with its modernist stained-glass windows by artist Marc Chagall. Wander the area’s picturesque cobblestone streets, ducking into “bierkellers” (beer cellars) and perusing local art galleries. You can also learn about the early 20th-century Dada movement at Kunsthaus Zurich, which has the world’s largest collection of Dada artwork, and people-watch along the shore of Lake Zurich. 

Lucerne will charm you with its photogenic lakeside setting, vibrantly painted buildings in Altstadt, and restored 14th-century Kapellbrücke covered footbridge (the original was destroyed by fire in 1993 and meticulously rebuilt). The city is surrounded by the Alps. Ride the world’s steepest cogwheel railway to the top of the 6,983-foot Mt. Pilatus. You’ll be rewarded with scenic views and a soothing soundtrack of cowbells echoing across the mountain slopes, before enjoying an aerial cable car ride back down. 

More majestic scenery awaits in the Jungfrau region, where Grindelwald is the jumping-off point for outdoor adventures such as hiking and biking. You can also ride a high-speed gondola and then a train to Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe, which at 11,362 feet guarantees you’ll be surrounded year-round by snow and ice.

2. From Amsterdam: Explore Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp in Belgium

Rhine River cruises also begin or end in Amsterdam, where you can spend a few days enjoying the city’s world-famous canals and museums. But if you’re looking to branch out, head to neighboring Belgium and visit three cities while you savor Belgian beer, chocolate, waffles, and frites.

How to get there: It’s about a two-hour train ride between Amsterdam and Antwerp, 1.5 hours between Antwerp and Bruges, and 45 minutes between Antwerp and Brussels. If you’re planning a pre-cruise Belgium visit, fly to Brussels, then head to Antwerp and Bruges before making your way to Amsterdam to board your ship; for post-cruise exploration, head first to Antwerp, then Bruges, and end in Brussels for your international flight home. (Bonus: If you have the time, you can also add on Paris, since some train rides between Brussels and Paris are under 90 minutes.)

What to see and do: In Antwerp, a city known for its Flemish-Renaissance architecture and beer culture, top sights include the Gothic-style Cathedral of Our Lady, photogenic Grote Markt (Grand Market Square) with its guild houses and splashing fountain, and the waterfront modernist Museum aan de Stroom (MAS). Also look around at the early 20th-century Antwerp Central Station as you exit — it’s a landmark.

Spending a day — or better still, an overnight — in Bruges is a must. Most of the UNESCO World Heritage Site-listed historic center dates to the 14th through 16th centuries and is easily explored on foot or via a scenic canal cruise. Don’t miss Grote Markt, the buzzy central square, and the 13th-century Church of Our Lady, home to the famous “Madonna and Child” statue by Michelangelo. Most of all, Bruges is about enjoying the well-preserved architecture while sampling local specialties: beer, of course, but also waffles dripping with sweet toppings, indulgent chocolates, and heaping servings of moules et frites (steamed mussels and fries).

Brussels has two personalities: Its bustling modern sector is home to NATO Headquarters and the futuristic Atomium sculpture (created for the 1958 World’s Fair), while its historic center offers exceptional charm. The main historic square, Grand-Place, is especially photogenic and is home to the Gothic Hotel de Ville (Town Hall), but don’t miss the nearby Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert (an elaborate 19th-century shopping arcade) and the famous Manneken Pis (the tiny bronze cherub doing his business in the fountain). You’ll find a place to sip Belgian beer around every corner — so order a flight and taste several varieties.

3. From Bordeaux: Visit Cognac and La Rochelle, France

After a week of cruising the Garonne and Dordogne rivers in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region — where vineyard tastings are on the itinerary and local vintages are uncorked onboard — why not extend your indulgence? Head to Cognac to learn about how some of those same grapes are distilled and aged to become the prized, eponymous spirit by legendary Cognac houses in and around the city. You can also hop over to the coastal city of La Rochelle, known for its old harbor and medieval and Renaissance architecture.

How to get there: From Bordeaux, take a train to Cognac (a connection is required and the trip takes 90 minutes to 2.5 hours). Once in Cognac, you can book day tours that visit your favorite Cognac house or tour several to find a favorite. It also takes about the same time to travel from Cognac to La Rochelle by train, so you should plan to stay overnight there.

What to see and do: Cognac, a small town of about 20,000 inhabitants, is pretty much all about, you guessed it, Cognac. This dark amber spirit is produced by legendary houses set in historic castles and manors scattered amid rolling vineyards. In Cognac proper, choose from the House of Hennessy on the banks of the River Charente or the House of Baron Otard in the historic Chateau de Cognac castle. The House of Remy Martin is located just south of Cognac and the House of Courvoisier is in neighboring Jarnac. 

Next, step back in time in the historic maritime city of La Rochelle, which grew from a small fishing village to one of France’s most important seaports from the 14th to 17th centuries. Historic architecture — half-timbered houses, white-limestone buildings, shady arcades, and an assortment of lighthouses — is the main draw, along with fresh seafood. You can also explore nearby Île de Ré, which is home to quaint villages, beautiful beaches, and more than 60 miles of bike paths. Don’t miss the local food markets, especially the one in the island’s capital, Saint-Martin-de-Ré, with its picturesque harbor and 17th-century fortifications.

4. From Lyon, France: Discover Switzerland’s Lake Geneva region

The Rhône River, which cuts through the historic city of Lyon in Southern France, originates in the Swiss Alps, which are just over the border. That means that once you’ve enjoyed a Rhône River cruise to Arles, Avignon, Vienne, Viviers, and other towns in France’s Auvergne-Rhône -Alpes and Occitanie regions — or before you even start your cruise — you can easily enjoy the scenic vistas of Switzerland’s Lake Geneva region. 

How to get there: From Lyon, take the train directly to Geneva (it’s a scenic two-hour ride) and plan your return flight to the U.S. from there rather than from Lyon. If you’ll be doing the Swiss portion before your Rhône River cruise, fly into Geneva and afterward you can take a train to Lyon. Either way, this sophisticated city will serve as the starting point for exploring several lakeside towns known for stunning views, flavorful wines, and cinematic and Olympic history.

What to see and do: Geneva is Switzerland’s second-largest city and its French-speaking populace makes the transition from France easy (although the currency is the Swiss franc, not the euro). Sights here include the Jet d’Eau water fountain, which shoots 460 feet into the air in the middle of Lake Leman (the official name of Lake Geneva). It is best viewed during a stroll in the Jardin Anglais (English Garden), home to the L’horloge Fleurie (Flower Clock) which represents the city’s watchmaking history. On a clear day, you can also see 15,777-foot Mont Blanc (France’s tallest peak). Don’t miss Old Town, where you’ll find St. Peter’s Cathedral and Place du Bourg-de-Four, the city’s oldest square. One night in Geneva is plenty to enjoy the sights.

Next, take a train (45 minutes) from Geneva’s Cornavin station to Lausanne, a hilly city that’s home to the International Olympics Committee and the engaging Olympics Museum as well as Lausanne Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in Switzerland. Spend a night or two and then take a 20-minute train ride to Vevey, which has a lovely waterfront promenade and offers access to the beautiful hillside vineyards of Lavaux, where the Chasselas and Gamay varietals are definitely worth sipping. Vevey is also home to Chaplin’s World, a delightful museum located on the estate where film legend Charlie Chaplin lived the final 25 years of his life. Spend two nights here and you can also hop a train for an 8-minute ride to Montreux, famous for its annual jazz festival and landmark Château de Chillon. It’s just 90 minutes by rail back to Geneva for your connection to Lyon or to Geneva airport.

5. From Vienna: Experience Prague, Czech Republic

While many Upper Danube river cruises begin or end in Budapest, a few itineraries start or finish in Vienna. Spending a few days in the Austrian capital is worthwhile and it’s easy to then hop on a train and add on a few more nights in Prague, a fairytale city with a hilltop castle and a one-of-a-kind medieval bridge.

How to get there: The train from Vienna takes about four hours. You should plan to spend at least three nights in Prague.

What to see and do: Prague is a city that’s ideal if you love to wander — strolling back and forth across the 15th-century Charles Bridge with its centuries-old statues of Catholic saints is never boring. The views at dusk are especially magical as the “City of a Hundred Spires” shows off its distinctive skyline. You’ll be crossing the Vltava River between Staré Město (Old Town) and Malá Strana (Lesser Town) — and each side offers plenty to see. 

Staré Město is home to Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí), a medieval landmark lined with significant Gothic and Baroque buildings as well as lively bars and cafes. You’ll be captivated by the 250-foot, multi-spired towers of the Gothic-style Church of Our Lady Before Tyn and delight in the movements of the twelve apostles on the 15th-century Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall Tower. This area is also home to Prague’s historic Jewish Quarter, the National Gallery, the 15th-century Powder Gate Tower, and plenty of beer halls (Czechs consume the most beer per capita worldwide).

Across the Charles Bridge in Malá Strana, the star attraction looms high above the river: Prague Castle. This hilltop fortress is a mini city housing two palaces, two churches (most significantly the Gothic-style St. Vitus Cathedral, where Czech kings and queens were coronated), and tidy, whimsical homes along 15th-century Golden Lane (Czech writer Franz Kafka once lived here). Malá Strana is also home to the Franz Kafka Museum, the gardens of Petřín Hill, and beautiful building facades and doorways painted in bright hues and adorned with sculptures. Depending on your interests — museums, churches, local cuisine — Prague will fill your stay with vivid experiences. 

6. From Bucharest, Romania: Tour Transylvania

If you begin or end your Lower Danube cruise in Bucharest, Romania (the other embarkation or disembarkation city is Budapest, Hungary), it’s worth staying another day or two to explore this historically complex city. If you can go farther afield, head to Transylvania. Though fictional association evokes Dracula nightmares, it is actually quite bucolic and full of scenic and architectural charm.

How to get there: Transylvania is expansive and public transport can be tricky among the main points of interest, so your best bet is to search online and book a guided tour. Options generally range from one to three days and cover the top sights.

What to see and do: There are four main places to visit in Transylvania, each in a spectacular setting. Among the most famous is Bran Castle, a photogenic landmark originally constructed in 1377. Widely known as “Dracula’s Castle,” it resembles the description of the vampire’s residence that English writer Bram Stoker described in his 1897 novel “Dracula” — even though Stoker never visited Transylvania.  Historical figure Vlad Tepes is associated with the castle; as the one-time ruler of Wallachia, he had the nickname Vlad the Impaler. Another more elaborate castle to visit is Peleș Castle, which was built in the late 19th century by the first king of Romania, Carol I, in a stunning display of architectural styles: mainly German neo-Renaissance with touches of neo-Ottoman and neo-Rococo.  

Most tours of Transylvania visit three cities: Brașov, set against a backdrop of the Carpathian Mountains and home to elaborate 15th and 16th-century buildings and Romania’s largest Gothic church; Sibiu, celebrated for its Germanic architecture and picturesque main square; and Sighișoara, a 16th-century walled town with turrets, winding cobblestone streets, a medieval clock tower, and the reported home of Vlad Dracul, father of Vlad the Impaler.

Once the ugly-duckling cousin to oceangoing superyachts, many riverboats now offer similar levels of luxury, comfort, and service. They can also access historic cities or remote deltas where no superyacht can venture.

With the rise of expedition yachting in remote destinations such as Antarctica , Greenland, and Indonesia’s Raja Ampat, there’s a general belief that all corners of the globe are now accessible by private yacht charter.

“River cruising is the beneficiary of a larger travel trend in which luxury travelers are looking to do nothing,” Daniel Levine, director of New York consultancy Avant-Guide Institute , tells Robb Report . “By that, I mean they can visit multiple ports and soak up plenty of culture and history, all without changing hotels.”

This new fleet of river cruisers can access inland cities and remote stretches of countryside that are inaccessible to large oceangoing vessels. Plus, Levine says, there’s an added advantage to river travel: no seasickness.

One leader of the new set of purpose-built riverboats is Aqua Expeditions , the luxury river cruise operator whose first vessel, Aria Amazon , set sail on the Peruvian Amazon in 2011. Over a decade later, the fleet has grown to three river ships, none with more than 20 suites, cruising both the Amazon and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, along with two oceangoing yachts in the Galapagos and Eastern Indonesia. 

“On my river ships, 30 percent of departures are now private buyouts, similar to traditional charters,” says founder Francesco Galli Zugaro. These clients, mainly multigenerational family groups or large gatherings of friends, are people who tend to vacation on yachts rather than the typical cruise ship crowd. Most of them have come to the riverboats, says Galli Zugaro, after chartering one of Aqua Expeditions’ two yachts.

The desire for off-the-beaten-track travel is fueling this new interest in riverboat charters, says Frédéric Crétin, a Monaco-based charter broker at superyacht brokerage Camper & Nicholsons . “We’ve had a surge in enquiries for the Peruvian Amazon, especially with Americans since it’s not too far from home,” says Crétin, who manages whole-boat bookings for the Aqua Expeditions fleet.

Heritage Line operates five traditionally styled ships along the upper and lower Mekong River and in Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay. “Our vessels, particularly our small-ship sailing charters on Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, have seen an increase in private stays,” says CEO John Tue Nguyen. “We now average 12 to 15 charters annually, including families, multi-generational bookings and VIP travelers.”

In Egypt, a gap in the market to showcase the country’s temples in a private, exclusive way, was behind the launch of the Nile River’s first luxury charter yacht in 2022, Berge . “Our clients are mostly royal families, politicians, celebrities, and athletes,” says Armen Kazazian of Kazazian Cruises , the yacht’s owner. “They don’t want to share the Egypt experience with hundreds of other people.”

The 180-foot, nine-cabin vessel has recently been joined by a sistership, the 196-foot, nine-cabin Arax . True to superyacht protocol, charters are secured with an official MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association contract, and in the lead-up to the charter, a preference form is sent out to gather information on dietary preferences and daily routines to ensure everything is ready for your arrival. 

The differences also include having no water toys as one would on a conventional yacht charter. “But we overcome that with the destination and experiences, such as candlelit dinners on private islands,” says Kazazian. Maybe. But being restricted to a single route on a river is also fundamentally different than port-hopping along the Med or Caribbean.

Inland cruising has multiple benefits, insists Matthew Shollar of Transcend Cruises , Europe’s first charter-only, river-cruise company. “You’re not just in coastal locations and you can take your whole group off the boat to a spa, or go biking, or shopping,” Shollar says. “And a riverboat always docks close to your destination.”

In September 2025, the company’s first ship, the 443-foot Transcend , will launch, with a second identical vessel following in early 2026. Penned by Tillberg Design of Sweden, both are built to European riverboat specs but draw inspiration from superyachts for style and amenities, including a 2,600-square-foot indoor/outdoor fitness area that includes a gym, spa, and guest wellness facility. 

“The single most expensive piece of equipment on board is a hot tip from superyachts, a 144-inch C Seed unfolding television,” continues Shollar. “It’s a worthwhile investment for guests to enjoy everything from silent discos to movie nights on the sun deck.”

The company soft-launched Transcend Advance this summer to better examine the private market’s potential. It took over a five-star vessel from Riverside Luxury Cruises. One client, celebrating his 60th birthday party, had never considered a riverboat charter, but was lured by being able to host many more guests. “We designed a six-day itinerary that was flexible and unique,” says Kimberly Daley, Transcend’s chief revenue officer. “It enabled him and his friends to see chartering in a whole new way.”

Transcend will sail “the highest-demand European waterways,” including the Rhine, Danube, and Moselle, offering waterside access to historic cities like Trier, Budapest, and Belgrade.

But a second collection of smaller luxury barges is carrying charter to canals and smaller waterways. Both Belmond’s 128-foot Coquelicot and European Waterways’ Kir Royale launched in France’s Champagne region this year, with a max capacity of six and eight guests, respectively, and the possibility of whole-boat bookings. This combination of space, intimacy, pastoral views and access to exceptional vineyards can’t be replicated on oceangoing yachts.

While luxury riverboats are still a small niche compared to the larger world of superyacht charters, they offer another kind of cruising experience, one that combines slow-moving water with a relaxed lifestyle in some of the most scenic destinations on the planet.
