The 93-meter high Statue of Liberty is another must-see. You can get there by ferry, and there is also a museum that is worth visiting.

A trip yo New York wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Central Park one of the absolute must-see places on the East Coats. It sits in the middle of Manhattan and is huge with 25,000 trees, a lake, ponds and fountains. The easiest way to explore is on foot or by metro. 

The Metropolitan Museum of Art backs onto Fifth Avenue and contains 5,000 years of art from all over the world – if you love art, it could take you a whole day to see it all! Other places to visit include the Rockefeller Centre, Times Square, and Brooklyn Bridge plus the myriad of different shops. Grab an early dinner because Broadway is a must-do in the evening – there are 41 shows to choose from!

Washington, DC 

No travel to East Coast USA is complete without a visit to the nation’s capital, Washington, DC – one of the best cities on the East Coast. This beautiful and historic city is located 5 hours south of New York City on the East Coast. DC is best known for its politics and historic landmarks, but it is also a city filled with vibrant neighbourhoods, incredible nature and great food.

Must see locations include walking on the National Mall and taking in the Lincoln and Washington Monuments, White House, and Capitol building. Tip : Make sure you check them out at night when there are fewer crowds and beautiful photo ops! 

Take time to explore one or two of the free 18 Smithsonian museums and galleries in the city. If exploring outdoors is more your interest, you can’t go wrong visiting Rock Creek Park located in the middle of the city with 2000 acres of lovely trails and bridges. 

Off the tourist path, check Union Market in NE and the lively H Street Corridor with some of the best local restaurants. You can even take the only free Streetcar up and down H Street. (Highly recommend Toki Underground or Maketto).

With some of the most delicious food and drinks in the country, fantastic music and very entertaining nightlife – it really is one of the best places to travel on the East Coast, that often gets overlooked!

Top things to do here include taking a food tour. It’s a great way to get a sampling of all the local cuisines and learn the difference between Creole and Cajun cooking. See a live jazz show – New Orleans is the place where jazz was born. Here, you’ll find many incredible live jazz shows at night. Take a cemetery tour – NOLA’s historical tombs are above ground (due to the high water table). They are actually quite beautiful and interesting to see. In fact, New Orleans is one of the best East Coast vacation destinations for foodies and jazz fans!

If you’re looking for a place to stay, The Royal Sonesta is a nice hotel in a prime location. Pro tip: if you pick a room on the Bourbon Street side, you’ll have some fun views, but it will be LOUD at night. (They provide earplugs, but just an FYI. Bourbon Street is crazy until the sunrises!) Another great option is to stay at one of the many awesome  Airbnbs in New Orleans .

Chicago 

Chicago is a city that fantastically blends old and new, modern and historic – an absolute must-see city on your East Coast travel. It is the home of so much incredible art deco architecture, contemporary sculpture and design and many exciting East Coast attractions such as hidden-away jazz and blues bars that come alive in the dark of night.  

A three day stay in Chicago  is enough to just scratch the surface, but it would easily be possible to spend longer here. Staying around the Magnificent Mile is an excellent idea because you’re mostly walking distance to downtown and attractions like Navy Pier and the Chicago Riverwalk.  

In winter, Chicago can be bitterly cold, but so rewarding. Lake Michigan freezes over and looks utterly magical from up close at Oak Street Beach. In summer months, the same spot transforms from a winter wonderland into a lovely small swimming beach with fantastic city views.  

Millennium Park is a huge drawcard to Chicago, and most visitors will be familiar with the bean-shaped reflective Cloudgate sculpture that has become synonymous with the city. But Millennium Park has much more to offer including a winter ice-skating rink and an installation called the Crown Fountain which features faces of Chicago residents projected on two pillars at opposite ends of a reflecting pool.  

The food of Chicago is also a huge drawcard. Visitors absolutely cannot leave the city without trying Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza or a Chicago-style hotdog from the iconic hot dog restaurant Portillo’s.

Austin, Texas, is one of the best places to visit on the East Coast of USA. Located in the middle of the state, Austin is known for its excellent barbecue, bat colony, and the pink granite capitol building.

Florida has many top-notch attractions, and  Disney World  is one of the most unique and best places to vacation on the East Coast for families. There’s nothing like it anywhere else. The other Disney parks are special, but Disney World tops them all.

The Texas Hill Country

The Texas Hill Country is by far, one of the best places to go in the East Coast and  the most beautiful places to visit in Texas.  It’s a large expanse of land between Austin and San Antonio featuring rolling green hills, rivers, historic small towns, and Texas’ wine region. 

Some destinations like Hamilton Pool and the distilleries in Dripping Springs or the original location Salt Lick BBQ can be visited as a day trip from Austin. But with so much beauty to discover, the Hill Country is one of the best places to vacation on East Coast. 

Rent a car and hit the road to explore the region’s small towns and the beautiful scenery in between. Fredericksburg is the most popular in the area and a great place to use as a base. 

Highway 290 leading into town is lined with vineyards, try Predernales and Becker for some of the state’s best wine and views!. 

Hike Enchanted Rock and try authentic German food downtown. Just 15 minutes outside of Fredericksburg is Luckenbach. This historic town hosts live music on the back patio of its original post office turned honkey-tonk bar. 

Another must-see historic small town is Gruene. It’s home to the oldest dance hall in Texas and regularly hosts some of the state’s most popular musicians. Dine at the Gristmill next door for a delicious dinner perched on the cliffs over the river.

Acadia national park.

Arcadia National Park is one of the best places to travel in the East Coast for adventure lovers.

There is no one perfect time to visit Acadia, but if you are going to visit, their summer boasts the best weather and the highest temperatures (as well as the highest number of visitors). 

As one of the oldest National Parks, Acadia preserves some of the most rugged coastline of the North Atlantic United States. Named for the early French settlers to the area, the Acadian wilderness boats beautiful hills, forests, and seas teeming with wildlife (particularly the lobster that the state is famous for). 

Among some of the highlights to Acadia is some of the best hiking in the northeast and getting to see the first rays of light in the US from the peak of Cadillac Mountain. 

No park in the northeast compares to Acadia’s size and diversity, and it’s the only park designated as a “National Park” in this region of the United States. 

If you do visit, be sure to check out some of the popular hikes such as the precipice and beehive trails, although they are maybe tough for those afraid of heights and exposed cliffs. 

There are great trails along the water and among the hills around Jordan Pond for some more relaxing hikes. For those with more time, a visit to Schoodic Peninsula and Isle Au Haut, which are beautiful and fare less touristed than the park’s main areas.

Everglades National Park

The World Heritage Site of the Everglades National Park is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast. When you are in the area, explore the Everglades City, a charming fishing village with a population of 443 people, with great food, and a long history. It is known as the fishing and stone crab capital of Southwest Florida. 

The Everglade City is located on the western gateway to Everglades National Park, nearby Chokoloskee Island. If you are looking to spend a few days exploring this incredible area, the  Ivey House Everglades Adventures Hotel  is a great option. 

The best time to visit is between October and May when the weather is cooler and drier. The temperature and the humidity levels are lower, the mosquitoes are not around, and hurricane season has passed. Shenandoah National Park

One of the most beautiful places to go in East Coast United States is less than 2 hours from Washington, DC. Shenandoah National Park stretches along a ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering scenic views, classic park lodges, and excellent hiking. 

Skyline Drive winds along the mountain ridge for 105 miles and is the centrepiece of the park. Along the drive, 75 overlooks give easy access to eastern and westward views of the Virginia mountains and valleys. Over 100 trails, including the iconic Appalachian Trail, criss-cross the park. 

Many of the best things to do are in  Shenandoah National Park’s Central District . Here you can stay in either of two lodges, Skyland or Big Meadows, and explore the park’s natural and historic sites. Both lodges have restaurants for dining with a view and meals to-go.

Shenandoah is a year-round destination, but most facilities close in the winter. Late spring and early fall are two of the best times to visit when mountain laurel and fall foliage colour the views.

Silver Springs State Park, Florida

If you’re looking for the best places to visit on the sunshine coast, you’re in luck.  Florida is filled with hidden gems like Silver Springs State Park .  Tucked into the Ocala National Forest, this blue lagoon is naturally heated by underwater thermal vents. At only $6 a person for admission, you would think this haven would be overrun with tourists, but fortunately for you, it remains a secret to most travellers.

Manatees frequent Silver Spring State Park lagoon during the winter months to keep warm, and it’s not uncommon to have the opportunity to swim with them. If you have a kayak or wish to rent one you can also leave the lagoon and explore the maze of mangroves that cut through Floridas’ centre. 

Most local Floridians spend the day swimming and BBQing during the hot and humid summer months, but the Silver Springs State Park is a perfect and stunningly beautiful destination to visit year-round.

There is no doubt that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most beautiful places in the United States and one of the best places to vacation on East Coast. This area is located along the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. The mountains are part of the Southern Appalachians. This is America’s most visited national park, but it is huge, so you will definitely be able to feel as if you are away from the bustle of everyday life.

The park has ridge upon ridge of seeming endless swaths of forest-covered mountains. The ever-present morning fog settles in the folds of these ridges to give this area the nickname “The Smoky Mountains.”

You will find many activities in this area. The hardest part will be choosing what to do. There are auto tour routes, bicycling, fishing, hiking, white water rafting, horseback riding, and much more.

This park is world-renowned for the diversity of its plant and animal life. It is considered a biologists paradise. One of the most popular things to do in the park is to observe wildlife, including elk and black bear. You will also be able to see old settler’s towns from the early 1800s to get a feel for what life was like in these mountains in the past.

Another fun activity is waterfall chasing. There are innumerable waterfalls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some are just a short walk off a roadway, and others are deep in woods down hard to find trails. The waterfalls in the park are simply stunning.

A visit to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, one of the most beautiful places to go on East Coast, is a time to delve deep into nature and refresh your spirit with the beauty of these mountains.

Most Beautiful Islands of the United States

Oahu, hawaii.

Hawaii is one of the best places to visit in the USA. It’s got the perfect climate, amazing landscapes and friendly locals. While you can be pretty happy visiting any of the Hawaiin Islands you should put Oahu to the top of your list. It is slightly less touristy than some of the other islands, especially if you stay on the North Shore, and it has some of the most ruggedly beautiful scenery. 

The North Shore is a mecca for surfers, and you’ll notice the laid-back surf vibes as soon as you arrive. The pace of life doesn’t move too quickly up there, which is a great way to live. One of the main attractions on the island of Oahu is Kualoa Regional Park, where the original Jurassic Park was filmed. 

You can go on a quad tour through the park or simply enjoy the views from a distance at the beach on the north end of Kaneohe Bay. The mountains here are formed into deep ridges covered in tropical greenery that truly gives off the Jurassic Park feel. From the beach, you’ll also get a cool view out over the water towards Mokoli’i island. 

If you’re looking for the ultimate beach to spend the day on then head to Lanikai Beach where you’ll find white sand and crystal-clear blue water. This is also one of the most protected beaches on the island, making it ideal for swimming, stand up paddleboarding and kayaking. You’ll also get a great view out to the Mokalua Islands right from the palm tree-lined beach. 

The Courtyard by Marriott Oahu North Shore is a great place to stay as it is right on the beach but also has a huge pool for you to relax in. You can find it near the town of Haleiwa on the North Shore of the island.

Kauai, Hawaii

The most beautiful destination in the USA has to be Kauai, Hawaii. It’s an island full of adventure and relaxation. With majestic coastlines and lush forests, white sand beaches and deep canyons, Kauai, Hawaii has got to be on your USA Bucket list!

This tiny island chain is known for its swaying palm trees, laid-back culture and beautiful beaches. In fact,  Kauai’s beaches  are some of the best in all of Hawaii. Offering incredible snorkelling, huge wintertime waves and plenty of surfing and boogie boarding, you could spend days beach-hopping on Kauai.

Perhaps even more unique than the beaches in Kauai are its mountainous terrain. The Waimea Canyon is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. It’s massive, multi-coloured canyon makes its way from the island’s centre down to the ocean. 

The NaPali Coast along the northern shore is rugged, gorgeous and a truly breathtaking experience. Giant, jagged cliffs reach out of the sea up to the sky. The unexplored forests and waterfalls make for a truly unique destination.

Of course, all the beauty comes with a price. The best ways to see Kauai, Hawaii on a budget is to wait for affordable flights and find inexpensive accommodations. You will find the best deals on vacation properties and condos versus hotels.

Sanibel Island 

If your dream US destination includes a secluded tropical island and  beautiful beaches, Sanibel Island  may be just what you’re looking for. Tucked away just off Ft. Myers on Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast, Sanibel is a small barrier island, separated by a tiny inlet from its sister island of Captiva just next door.

These islands are a world away from the bustling nearby cities of Ft. Myers, Cape Coral, and Naples, and offer one of the best getaways in the US for a relaxed family gathering or romantic escape.

There’s plenty to enjoy on Sanibel if you love world-class shopping and dining. But it’s the quieter more natural attractions that draw most visitors — like cycling along quiet bike paths that run the entire length of the island or kayaking the JN “Ding” Darling Wildlife Preserve. Visiting the Sanibel lighthouse at sunset is also a highlight of any visit.

Mackinac Island, Michigan 

Are you looking to visit the most beautiful destination in the USA? Hands down, the place is Mackinac Island, Michigan. Located between the upper and lower peninsulas of the state, this magical island is just about eight miles around and requires a ferry to get there. 

But wait, there’s more! The real impressive part of this island is that no cars are allowed on the island. Everything is done by foot, bike or horse and carriage. It is like stepping back in time. This is a top  travel bucket list  destination in the Midwest but is increasing in visibility around the world. 

Some of the must-do activities on the island are: a carriage tour to get the full overview of history and layout of the land, afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel, a rum runner form the Pink Pony, definitely walk around and taste fudge from all the shops – the island is known for its famous fudge, watch a sunrise on the lawn of Mission Point Resort and sunset from the West Bluff or the porch of the Grand Hotel, rent a bike and ride the outskirts of the island, visit Arch Rock, eat fancy for an evening at The Woods Restaurant, and if you are there during the Lilac Festival, take it all in. 

Popular dishes on the island include white fish anything (dip, sandwiches, spreads, etc.) and the pecan ball served at Grand Hotel restaurants.

If you are looking for an iconic hotel to stay in on the island, the Island House is perfectly situated just past the bustling Main Street and overlooks Lake Huron and the boats in the harbour.

Nantucket is a charming island which lies 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Along with Cape Cod and  Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket  has a well-earned reputation as an idyllic summer vacation destination.

Nantucket is easily accessible from the mainland and Martha’s Vineyard by ferry or plane. Thanks to the need to organise a flight or a ferry, the summer crowds on Nantucket are much less than on mainland Cape Cod. There are only about 10,000 year-round residents, and the population increases to about 50,000 in the summer months.

Nantucket is a small and fairly flat island which is easy to explore by foot or by cycle. There are two towns on the island with a long and narrow shape (approximately 15 miles long by 3 miles wide). It’s perfect for people who love the outdoors with hiking, cycling and water activities, such as kayaking and surfing. It’s easy to rent bicycles as well as water sports equipment. There are about 30 public beaches to explore as well. 

Historically, Nantucket was influential in the whale trade, which made the island very wealthy. Nowadays, there is a whaling museum and three lighthouses that attest to its maritime importance. Today, the island’s wealth is mainly derived from tourism to a well-heeled crowd. 

There are luxury hotels and charming B&B’s for accommodation as well as plenty of boutique shops and restaurants. The vibe is preppy chic. 

Located in a historic Greek Revival building, we like the Periwinkle Inn B&B which has a great location in town within walking distance of many activities. Created from a former lifesaving station, the HI Nantucket Hostel is also renowned for being very nice with a great location.

The USA is packed with bucket list cities, parks and attractions but if you’re looking for the best of the west coast we have 25 favorite spots or the best of the east coast, keep reading!

1. Dry Tortugas National Park, Flordia: This national park off the coast of Florida is comprised of islands and features an abundance of marine and bird life!

2. Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts : This little gem of an island is in the south of Massachusetts and has the cutest colonial style.

3. Baltimore, Maryland : This city is quirky, it’s adorable, it’s charming – that’s why they call it Charm City – and it’s well worth the stop.

4. Atlantic City, New Jersey : Known as the Las Vegas of the east, Atlantic City offers casinos, wide beaches, and boardwalks.

5. Savannah Historic District, Georgia:  Spanish moss trees adorn this district and make it appear otherworldly. (pictured below)

6. Watkins Glen State Park, New York : With gorgeous gorges and waterfalls, Watkins Glen State Park is quite the adventure.

7. Smoky Mountains, North Carolina/Tennessee : This beautiful mountain range is often blanketed with fog, hence the name.

8. Walt Disney’s World, Florida : This is a classic vacation spot that you just can’t miss! Release your inner child at Disney World.

9. Shenandoah Caverns, Virginia : Haunting structures made by stalagmites and stalactites are on display at these cool caves!

10. White Mountains, New Hampshire : An absolutely breathtaking mountain range, the White Mountains have many hiking spots and photo ops! (below)

11. South Beach, Miami, Florida : If you’re ever in need of a beach day, South Beach is the place to go. It’s warm and beautiful all year round!

12. Acadia National Park, Maine : As the only national park in New England, Acadia National Park boasts beautiful scenery and a lovely getaway in Bar Harbor.

13. French Quarter, New Orleans, Louisiana : The french quarter is the oldest part of New Orleans, and as you can probably tell, has much french influence.

14. Lincoln Memorial, DC : What better way to celebrate the man who freed the slaves than by visiting his gorgeous memorial! (below)

15. Niagara Falls, New York : Possibly the most famous waterfall in America, you can’t miss a trip to Niagara!

16. Everglades National Park, Florida : Half land and half water, the Everglades are beautiful and support an ecosystem unique to the country.

17. Times Square, New York : It’s full of tourists all year round but you cannot miss a trip to the iconic Times Square.

18. Stowe, Vermont : This little town functions as a fabulous ski resort in the winter and offers gorgeous landscapes in the summer! (below)

19. Charleston, South Carolina : Known for its elegant old-fashioned aesthetics, this city is worth the visit for the picture alone.

20. Newport, Rhode Island : Newport is a quaint beach town in New England and known for its mansions from the gilded age.

21. Nashville, Tennessee : Known as the country music capital of the world, Nashville is a must visit for all those who enjoy country music.

22. Lake Placid, New York : Lake Placid became famous for hosting the winter Olympics twice, but now is just a serene and gorgeous vacation spot. (below)

23. Portland, Maine : This coastal city is known for its mix of quintessential New England quaintness and large city life!

24. Montauk, New York : A vacation spot for those living in New York City, Montauk is the perfect escape from the city with quiet beaches and chill vibes.

25. Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, Pennsylvania : One man’s trash is another man’s treasure as the saying goes… well Philly’s Magic Gardens is an art exhibit made entirely out of trash into mosaics.

I grew up in New Jersey, went to school in Providence, RI and then lived in Southern Florida. Some of my greatest childhood vacations were in Martha’s Vineyard! This list is great!

I have a good experience of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens because I have been there many of the times in my whole life to explore the beauty of this alluring garden and always spent lovely time there. It is a really good place for fun and tourists can enjoy the hiking and many other most exciting activities.

Yes it is one of my absolute favorite places, so gorgeous! 🙂

you said the best time to visit East coast the USA is November to February. I’m planning my trip in mid October. What will you recommend this? Also, tell me how many days will be enough in the US if I just want to explore the Cali and Michigan

Yes, mid October is a great time to visit the East Coast! October/November you might see some leaves changing colors for fall, which is very hard to time right. The US is huge so you would need to save time by flying between California and Michigan. It depends, you can see maybe some of one area of Michigan like Ann Arbor in a weekend, but California is huge and each major city might ideally require at least 3 to 4 days to fully enjoy from: (in order of my favorites): San Diego to San Francisco to LA.

Absolutely October is a great time to visit the East Coast, you might even be lucky to see the fall foliage leaves changing colors! California and Michigan are far apart so it depends on how much you want to see but if you have a limited amount of time at least 3-5 days each per city. Keep in mind California’s many destinations like San Francisco or LA or San Diego can also be far apart too and you need at least 3-5 days for each city in California! Hope that helps! 🙂

Best Places to Visit on the East Coast

The East Coast has a lot to offer including historical attractions, beautiful beaches and stunning coastline, national parks and mountains, incredible fall foliage, charming towns and large must see cities.

Some of these must see places I have already visited and recommend and the rest are places that I have added to my personal East Coast USA bucket list for future travel. So read on if you are looking for inspiration and ideas for your next East Coast vacation or road trip.

What States are in the East Coast?

The East Coast includes all the coastal states that have shoreline on the Atlantic Ocean: Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The East Coast region of the USA also includes Vermont, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia even though they do not have coastal access to the Atlantic.

East Coast Bucket List

Here are the best places to visit in the East Coast . I have included at least one destination from every state to make it easier to plan an East Coast USA road trip .

Maine Bucket List

• Explore Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, one of the best National Parks in the US. Here is a self guided driving tour you can use to explore the park.

• Visit Portland, a charming coastal city packed with historic landmarks.
• Visit Kennebunkport, a historic coastal town in southern Maine known for its beaches and being home to the summer home of the Bush family.

New Hampshire Bucket List

• Explore the stunning White Mountains, a mountain range with many hiking spots of all levels.
• Drive Kancamagus Highway , a 34.5 mile scenic drive along Route 112 and one of the best New England drives for fall foliage. For those that prefer not to drive, you can visit on a fall foliage day trip tour from Boston .

Vermont Bucket List

• Do a fall road trip in Vermont to see the beautiful fall foliage.
• Visit the picturesque town of Stowe .

Massachusetts Bucket List

• Visit Boston . Some Boston must dos include walking the Freedom Trail, watching a game at Fenway Park and celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.
• Relax at Cape Cod.
• Learn about the history of the witch trials at Salem .

Pennsylvania Bucket List

• Visit Philadelphia. Visit Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the Eastern State Penitentiary and have a Philly cheesesteak.
• See the historical attractions in Gettysburg , including the grounds of the Battle of Gettysburg, the most important battle of the Civil War.

New Jersey Bucket List

• Go gambling in Atlantic City, one of the most popular and well known cities in the Jersey Shore.
• Hang out at Liberty State Park and enjoy great views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.
• Visit beautiful Cape May. Just look at all the things to do in Cape May, NJ and you’ll realize how amazing this place is.

West Virginia Bucket List

• See the New River Gorge Bridge. If you are feeling adventurous, you can sign up for bridge walk guided tour where you cross the catwalk under the bridge.

Delaware Bucket List

• Visit Rehoboth Beach, a Delaware beach town with the Rehoboth Boardwalk, plus Cape Henlopen and Delaware Seashore state parks.

Maryland Bucket List

• Visit Baltimore. Don’t miss the historic waterfront neighborhood of Fells Point and make sure to try Maryland’s famous crab cakes.

Washington, D.C. Bucket List

• Exploring the capital of the United States of America is a must on any East Coast bucket list. Must see attractions include the Capitol Building, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and National Mall. The city is especially beautiful (but crowded) during the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring.

Virginia Bucket List

• Visit Luray Caverns , the largest and most popular caverns in the East Coast.
• Explore Shenandoah National Park. Make sure to drive all or part of Skyline Drive, the one and only road that goes through Shenandoah National Park. Read : Complete Guide to Shenandoah National Park .
• Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, a National Parkway and America’s longest linear park known for its scenic beauty. It is considered is one of the best road trips in the US and runs for 469 miles through Virginia and North Carolina starting from Shenandoah National Park. One of the most picturesque stops is Mabry Mill , a  watermill located at milepost 176.2.
• Explore historic sites and museums on a visit to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown Settlement.
• Visit Virginia Beach .

North Carolina Bucket List

• Visit Asheville. One of the highlights is a visit to the historic Biltmore Estate , the largest house in the United States.
• Visit the Outer Banks , a chain of islands off the coast of North Carolina.
• Visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park, America’s most visited national park, which is located on the border between North Carolina and Tennessee.

• Drive the South Carolina portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Highlights in South Carolina include: The Blowing Rock (a formation with sweeping views of peaks, forests and the Johns River Gorge), Linn Cove Viaduct (a 1,243-foot long bridge made of segmented concrete that hugs the face of Grandfather Mountain and one of the most photographed sections of the parkway) and Linville Falls, North Carolina’s most photographed waterfall.

South Carolina Bucket List

• Visit the charming city of Charleston.
• Visit Myrtle Beach, a vacation resort known for golf and a beach with a boardwalk and music variety shows.
• Visit Hilton Head Island , offering 12 miles of pristine beaches and several golf courses. If you visit between May and October, you can see the sea turtles that visit the beaches to lay their nests. There is a ferry service from Savannah, Georgia .

Georgia Bucket List

• Visit Helen , a Bavarian-style town in Northeast Georgia which hosts an annual Oktoberfest every fall.

Florida Bucket List

• Visit Miami. Highlights include Miami Beach, Wynwood Walls and the Little Havana neighborhood. One of the busiest time to visit other than spring break is during Art Basel in December.
• Drive from Miami to Key West on the scenic Overseas Highway (one of the best American road trips ).

• Swim with manatees in Crystal River. You can join a day tour from Orlando if you don’t have a car.

The 21 Wildest East Coast Beaches

Not all stretches of sand are created equal. These are the Atlantic’s best, most adventurous shorelines, from Maine to Florida

If you’ve ever lived along the East Coast, there’s a secret that all curious, outdoorsy people soon discover: the wildest, most deserted places are often those abutting the Atlantic. That’s right, the best East Coast beaches can be every bit as remote-feeling as Western landscapes. This is easier to comprehend when you realize that the East Coast has roughly 30,000 miles of coastline. (The entire Pacific Coast, by contrast, has 7,863.)

This revelation came to me early, while exploring New England in my twenties, and re-confirmed it in my 30s and 40s, as I looked to escape New York City on weekends. Since then, I’ve driven as far as Maine and North Carolina’s Outer Banks—roughly eight hours in either direction—from NYC to explore an “undiscovered” beaches and maybe catch a fish or two. I’ve also road tripped all over the south’s Lowcountry looking for an empty stretch of sand, and have spent way too much time on Florida’s Atlantic Coast trying to to catch a redfish or bonefish on a fly rod.

Look, I’m not foolish enough to think anyone can be an “expert” on 30,000 miles worth of barrier islands, salt marshes, and tiny beachside communities. But I’ve explored enough to say with confidence that there are some wild damn places out there, and I’ve been lucky enough to discover a few that are well worth a visit.

Here are just a handful of my favorites. This list also includes a mix of both remote, undeveloped gems and impossible-to-ignore standbys that are great simply because of their, well…beach vibes. It’s a whole thing, and any town that has it, like Cape May, New Jersey, or Folly Beach, South Carolina, is worth a look-see, too. Trust me, you can’t go wrong with any of these beaches, as long as you’re packing some sunscreen (and maybe a bottle of bug spray for the real remote ones).

Best Beaches in Maine

Location: Twelve miles south of Bar Harbor Why We Love It: Soft sand surrounded by the coniferous forest of Acadia National Park

This is probably Maine’s most iconic beach —a pocket of white sand framed by rocky shorelines and wind-flagged trees—and one of the most beautiful beaches in U.S. National Parks . For New Englanders, Sand Beach is well-known—for good reason. It’s one of the few sandy beaches in this part of the state (hence the name), and it’s sheltered just enough from the wind that it’s often perfect for sunbathing on a warm day. In the summer months, there’s even a lifeguard on duty. This all means that it’s popular and you can expect crowds in July and August. Even then, only a handful of people venture into the water, because its temperature usually peaks south of 60 degrees Fahrenheit. But if you’re willing to brave the cold Atlantic, swimming here can be good. Despite its popularity, it can even feel secluded on the right day. There’s also hiking and paddling in nearby Acadia. One of the more difficult and popular treks is Beehive Trail , a 1.4-mile loop that ascends 450 feet and offers stunning views of the below.

Know Before You Go: Even though it’s inside Acadia National Park, there is no fee to access the beach. The parking lot, however, occasionally fills up on busy weekend days, so it’s best to arrive early.

Bonus Beach: Roque Bluffs State Park, Maine

Location: In the heart of Down East Maine, eight miles from the small town of Machias Best For: A choose-your-own-adventure swim, either in the cold ocean waters or in a freshwater pond

The bulk of this 274-acre park is a half-mile crescent of sand and pebbles that divides the shallow waters of 60-acre Simpson Pond from Englishman Bay. In the heat of summer, it’s possible to swim in either—or both, a plunge in the brisk saltwater followed by the comparably warm waters of Simpson Pond. While it’s great for a plunge, this is not a lounging beach, to be clear, as the pebbles make laying on a beach towel uncomfortable. But Roque Bluffs does offer a relaxing stroll with dramatic views of rugged islands jutting out of the ocean waters. There’s also a series of short trails in the fields and woodlands inside the park, with an excellent vantage point of Pond Cove and Great Cove. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a dip.

Best Beach in New Hampshire

Location: 15 miles South of Portsmouth, near the border with Massachusetts Why We Love It: A quieter alternative to its more bustling neighbors, with pristine sands

New Hampshire has the shortest coastline in the U.S. at just 18 miles, but it packs some excellent beaches into that stretch. Its most famous is Hampton Beach, a classic New England destination with white sand, long boardwalks, and a circus-like atmosphere, thanks to its string of arcades. Much better is Seabrook Beach, across the inlet from Hampton, with impossibly white sand, consistent waves, and none of the crowds. By comparison, it feels hidden, serene, and impossibly quaint. There’s a reason for this: parking is nearly impossible to find because it’s prohibited without a resident parking permit. But if you make it here, you’ll have a wide expanse of sand to stroll along or set up an umbrella. The surfing is good here, and the dunes make it seem wild, even if you’re only a few minutes to the Hampton Beach circus.

Know Before You Go: To get around the parking, take an Uber or ride a bike from the town of Seabrook, less than 5 miles away. You can also pay for parking at Hampton Beach and walk across Hampton Bridge, then down to Seabrook, a little over a mile walk.

Best Beaches in Massachusetts

Location: The Outer Cape, roughly 90 miles from downtown Boston Why We Love It: Unparalleled, wide-open stretches of soft sand and wind-swept dunes

No list like this would be complete without including Cape Cod National Seashore , 40 miles of pristine beaches, freshwater ponds, and high dunes interspersed by lighthouses, cranberry bogs, and hiking trails. The recreational opportunities are practically endless, and whole books have been written about how to make the most of the beaches here. But if you want a down-and-dirty guide for newbies, this is it. Coast Guard Beach, in the town of Eastham, is one of the most popular beaches because it’s great for lounging and swimming on the Atlantic side, and it also offers paddling in nearby Nauset Bay or Salt Pond Bay. If you want to feel like you’re walking off the Eastern Seaboard, head to Marconi Beach, with sweeping Atlantic views. Hiking along the bluffs here will make you feel as if you could see a white whale at any moment.

Know Before You Go: Traffic headed to the Cape is infamous on summer weekends, so if you go during peak times, it’s best to stay overnight or through the weekend. (Or instead, go during the week.) If you do stay overnight, Provincetown, despite its crowds and high price tags, is worth the added cost. This artist colony and LGBTQ+ capital is brimming with verve and quirkiness and the energy it adds to a vacation is a perfect complement to days spent in the salt and sand.

Bonus Beach: Crane Beach, Massachusetts

Location: Five miles from the town of Ipswich, 30 miles north of Boston Best For: Escaping the crowds and enjoying a slice of bucolic New England on your way to the beach

Cape Cod gets nearly all of the beach attention in Massachusetts, but this one, on the North Shore, features four miles of pristine shoreline backed by tall dunes and salt marshes. It can get busy on a summer weekend, but otherwise offers a peaceful opportunity for walking on the sand, hiking five miles worth of trails through the dunes, birdwatching, and paddling in the nearby Ipswich River or Essex Bay. Beach passes are required and can be purchased in advance . If you come, don’t leave before checking out Castle Hill on the Crane Estate , a palace-like summer estate built for industrialist Richard Teller Crane Jr., with impeccably maintained gardens and a rolling grass lawn stretching to the water.

Best Beach in Rhode Island

Location: In Middletown, next door to Newport Why We Love It: A city-person’s beach that has a good hike within walking distance

Locals call this mile-long stretch of sand on the southeastern shore of Aquidneck Island Second Beach , but it is anything but secondary. Not only does it have great swimming and sunbathing, the western flank of Sachuest, called Surfer’s End, is known for its consistent swells. If you get bored sunbathing on the beach, you can also easily walk to the eastern end, which is the beginning of Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge , with three miles of trails. Birdwatchers are common here because of the diversity of species, including the second largest wintering population of harlequin ducks on the Atlantic coast. It also has great fishing from shore, including an active night fishing permit system for striped bass.

Know Before You Go: This is a full-service beach, with concession stands, bathrooms, grills, etc., so don’t expect pristine wildlands—or to be by yourself. Rent a surfboard from the rental area and, after your session, check out Gilded Age mansions in Newport.

Best Beaches in New York

Ditch plains park beach, new york.

Location: Two miles east of Montauk Village, on the far eastern end of Long Island Why We Love It: It’s home to one of the best surf breafks on the East Coast.

For many New Yorkers trekking out to the Hamptons, this two-mile beach is as much a part of summer weekends as Hampton Water rosé. That’s, in part, because Ditch Plains is such a great place to set up for a day in the sun, thanks to its swim-friendly waters  (depending on conditions) and lifeguards on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day (roughly). There’s also a food truck next to the beach, called Ditch Wich , that serves up some of the area’s best poke bowls and wraps. But the reason this beach is on this list is because of the surf break just offshore, which offers good waves in just about any swell direction. The lineup is notorious for getting crowded, but there are definitely days in the fall when, midweek, you can find yourself sharing swells with only one or two other surfers—or even snagging them all for yourself.

Know Before You Go: Parking in the lot next to the beach requires an East Hampton permit (available to residents only). In the summer, take an Uber/Lyft or, better yet, rent a cruiser bike in Montauk and ride here.

Bonus Beach: Napeague Beach, New York

Location: Between Amagansett and Montauk, on the east end of Long Island Best For: Getting a taste of what Long Island beaches felt like before the crowds invaded

Tucked off Highway 27 between the prim and proper Hamptons and the bustling beaches of Montauk lies one of the area’s great secrets: a two-mile stretch of sand that even locals overlook. Technically, it’s part of 1,364-acre Napeague State Park , but the beach here feels private, in part because it’s sandwiched between two neighborhoods who guard their sand with zeal. Napeague Beach is, however, open to the public, and it’s popular with 4x4ers that have beach driving permits . You can easily walk to the sand, however, by parking at a small, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it spot on the south side of Highway 27. This is where 4x4s access the beach, and you’ll have to walk from here through the dunes. Doing so only makes the empty beach feel that much more rewarding once you get a full view of the wind-swept dunes, with the occasional surfcaster chucking rigs far out into the ocean. Thanks to its remoteness, this beach is also popular with the endangered piping plover, so it’s often closed during summer nesting season. When it’s open, however—especially in fall—it can feel downright abandoned.

Best Beaches in New Jersey

Location: Barnegat Peninsula, south of the town of Seaside Heights Why We Love It: White sand beaches in a wild landscape that feels frozen in time

Many New Jerseyans have never even been to this park, with 10 miles of sand dunes, maritime forests, and freshwater wetlands. That’s because this place is as far from the manicured sand, boardwalks, and hotdog stands as it gets. Island Beach State Park is proof that remote-feeling beaches can exist anywhere, even in New Jersey. In addition to being home to the state’s largest osprey colony, it’s frequented by peregrine falcons, waterfowl, shorebirds, and migrating songbirds. Fishermen flock here, too, whether they’re targeting the surf on the Atlantic side or casting in Barnegat Bay. There’s a designated swimming beach (called Ocean Swimming Beach), surfing, an area for kitesurfing, and even eight miles of trails. Sunbathing is really the only thing you shouldn’t do here, because you’ll be missing out on so much else.

Know Before You Go: One of the best recreational opportunities may be paddling from Island Beach into the Sedge Island Wildlife Management Area, one of New Jersey’s most productive wildlife habitats, with four different water trails to paddle through it.

Bonus Beach: Cape May Beach, New Jersey

Location: Cape May, on the far southern coast of the state Best For: Relaxing on manicured sand next to one of the most charming towns in all of New Jersey

This is the beach that many New Jerseyans will point to as their state’s best—and for good reason. The town of Cape May is lovely as hell, and downtown is adjacent to the main beach, with sugary sand that is raked cleaned nearly every day during summer, making it feel, well, pristine. It’s also welcoming, full of sunbathers and swimmers chilling out on the weekend, which is all part of the charm. This is a social beach, with the occasional fireworks show or movie on the beach night . If you want to sneak away from some of the crowds during the day, walk to the West, towards Cove Beach, which usually has more room to lay out an oversized beach towel (and great sunset views). There’s also plenty of activities nearby, including a few beach breaks good for groms, skimboarding, fishing, and paddling in the harbor.

Best Beach in Delaware

Location: Seven miles south of Rehoboth Beach Why We Love It: Six miles of ocean-front sand and 20 miles of bay shoreline full of possibilities

This popular state park offers easy access to the junction of Indian River Bay, Rehoboth Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. As such, it is overflowing with activities: swimming, surfing, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, hiking, paddling, crabbing, and camping, among others. There are two ocean swimming areas, patrolled by lifeguards during the summer season, and there’s a decent surf break at the Indian River Inlet , which can be great with some southerly wind protection (but is also challenging, thanks to its shallow water). If you want to stretch your legs, there’s a one-mile hiking trail through the adjacent Burton Island Nature Preserve , with raised boardwalks over the marshlands.

Know Before You Go: There’s a $5 daily entrance fee ($10 for nonresidents), but those fees help make this an extremely well-managed park, with great resources to help you plan practically any adventure, whether it’s birding, surfcasting, paddling, or something else.

Best Beach in Maryland

Location: Maryland’s Eastern Shore, roughly 10 miles from Ocean City Why We Love It: 37 miles of remote dunes with herds of wild horses

There is no other place on the East Coast that demonstrates just how wild a coastline can be like this national seashore, which stretches across the Maryland and Virginia border. Assateague is one of the largest barrier islands on the eastern seaboard with uninterrupted coastal habitats, and it has become famous for its wild horses, which have been here for hundreds of years. If you want to see them, you’re probably better off  heading to the Maryland side or by booking a tour with a third-party organizer. There are two entrances, one in the north and one in the south, and there is no vehicle access between the two (other than by going back to the mainland). If you want to really explore the beaches—and you have a four-wheel drive rig—you can apply for and purchase an over-sand vehicle (OVS) permit , which allows you to access nearly the entire length of the beach . You can fish mile after mile of remote surf or just find an open stretch of sand to sit down and enjoy the ocean breeze.

Know Before You Go: Nearly every year, it seems, Assateague breaks its previous record for visitation, with 2.3 million people coming here in 2022 . So yes, expect to share the sand. The northern end of Assateague Island tends to be less busy than the southern end, but the surest way to get away from the crowds is with an OSV permit or by walking a few miles down the beach.

Best Beach in Virginia

Location: Roughly 19 miles south of Virginia Beach Why We Love It: It remains one of the last undeveloped shorelines in this part of the Atlantic coast.

This is not the place to come if you’re hoping to lay out a towel and soak in some rays (there are no dedicated swimming areas, either), but it is one of Virginia’s most dramatic, and least visited, parks. Situated between Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the North Carolina border, False Cape State Park offers excellent stretches of open sand that are accessible only by hiking, biking, or boating to them. The reward is stunning coastal views, good surfcasting, and on the bay side, a maze of water trails to paddle. There are a series of hiking trails to choose from, too, which total 15.3 miles. These include Barbour Hill, a 1.42-mile self-guided trek through the dunes to the ocean. If you’re committed, there’s even a primitive camping program, which requires a hike into your site of anywhere from five to nine miles. But you’re almost guaranteed to be all alone.

Know Before You Go: The park operates a tram ($8 per person) that offers a four-hour guided tour through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park, which is a good way to see the wildlife here without committing to a longer hike or adventure.

Best Beaches in North Carolina

Location: On the Outer Banks, along highway NC-12 Why We Love It: Iconic lighthouses, unparalleled surf, and vast natural habitats

It’s hard to think of a better beach for a list like this. In reality, though, this is an entire ecosystem, with 70 miles and 30,000 acres of grass-covered dunes, wide sand beaches, marshes, and woodlands that are home to some 400-plus bird species, among other critters. Sure, there will be crowds and traffic in summer, but it’s hard to find a more alluring coastline with so many activities. Surfing is excellent here, with regular swells at a range of spots, including Canadian Hole and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, both near the town of Buxton. It’s also very well established as a kite-surfing hotspot, with consistent winds blowing through Pamlico Sound (launch from Kite Point ). Fishing is great, too—both on the ocean and sound sides—and paddlers can explore the flat waters on the sound side as well, launching from the Oregon Inlet Kayak Launch. There are even three different hiking trails, including a nine-mile trek through the dunes and maritime forests on Hatteras Island. Frankly, it’s hard to imagine a better seashore for basically anything you want to do outside.

Know Before You Go : Cape Hatteras National Seashore is free to enter, but there are fees for just about everything else—off-road vehicle use, camping, and climbing the 200 steps to the top of Bodie Island Lighthouse, for example ( $10 per person ). Also, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, a highlight for many people, is closed for at least the next year or two as it undergoes repairs.

Bonus Beach: Ocracoke Island, North Carolina

Location: In the southern Outer Banks , across the channel from Hatteras Island Best For: Getting away from it all

Technically, this 13-mile-long barrier island is part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, as most of it is managed by the park service, but it feels a world apart, thanks to its frozen-in-time quirkiness and just how raw the landscape feels. Ocracoke is also a testament to how going the extra mile is totally worth it. The island is only accessible by ferry , which makes the beaches here much, much less crowded. It can often feel as  if you’re alone, especially in early fall. For surfing, the beach near Ocracoke Inlet offers consistent waves, and fishermen can surfcast along the Atlantic shores or set up on the sound-side shoreline, like at South Point. Hammock Hills Nature Trail offers a good walk for hikers. There’s even a herd of ponies managed by the park service that are descendants of wild horses that have lived on the island since the 17th or 18th century, give or take a 100 years.

Best Beaches in South Carolina

Location: Twelve miles from downtown Charleston, on Folly Island Why We Love It: An eclectic mix of Southern charm and seaside cool that’s hard to find anywhere else

Folly Beach is no secret—tourists have been coming here for generations—but this 12-square-mile barrier island is the epitome of what a great seaside community should be. “Beaching” is just a way of life here, which makes the whole thing irresistible, even if you’re just walking down the fishing pier. Of course, there’s a reason people flock here: six miles of white sand, palm trees, and warm Atlantic waters ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and, of course, surfing. Folly’s most famous break is the Washout, known for kicking up some of the best waves on the East Coast. There’s also plenty of other outdoor activities, from kayaking and SUPing through the marshes on the Folly River side of the island to riding a cruiser bike around town. Folly Beach can be a bit of a scene at night, but that also makes it great for snagging some beach town energy and good eats, from fresh seafood to beachside tacos. There’s perhaps no better place to escape reality for a weekend (or two).

Know Before You Go: While surfing at Folly Beach is better in the winter, the summer months are the prime time for live music, festivals, outdoor movies, and crowds, making it the best time to experience its full intensity. Parking can be a challenge, so if you’re only coming for a weekend day, it’s best to rideshare.

Bonus Beach: Hunting Island State Park Beach, South Carolina

Location: 15 miles east of the town Beaufort, and roughly 90 miles south of Charleston Best For: A beach trip that’s as much about outdoor adventures as lying on the sand

Hunting Island State Park is South Carolina’s most popular park—5,000 acres of pristine Lowcountry that’s full of salt marshes, palmetto and live oak forests, and a four-mile-long stretch of white sand. Even with the crowds on a summer weekend, however, this barrier island feels pristine, as it’s almost totally undeveloped. And if you come on a weekday (or, better yet, in the fall,), it’ll feel downright remote. There are a number of great hiking trails in the park, including the 1.9-mile Diamondback Rattlesnake Trail and the easy-peasy Marsh Boardwalk , which might be the best spot along the coast for taking in the sunset. There’s a 950-foot fishing pier, and paddling in the marshes surrounding the island. As for the beach, it doesn’t disappoint either, and if you walk to the southern end you can see Little Hunting Island Boneyard Beach, where skeletal remains of dead trees dot the sand.

Best Beaches in Georgia

Location: Roughly 75 miles south of Savannah, near the tiny town of Darien Why We Love It: Untouched natural beauty and a rich history on the South’s most overlooked coastline

Sapelo Island, the fourth largest barrier island in Georgia, is one of the East Coast’s best-kept secrets. There are miles and miles of pristine beaches, maritime forests, and salt marshes across this 12-mile-long island, which has hardly changed since the 1980s—or even the 1880s. While the landscape here is unforgettable, the island is mostly known for its unique history, being home to the Hog Hammock community, one of the South’s few remaining Gullah Geechee settlements , descendants of enslaved West Africans brought to work on plantations along the Atlantic coast. Today, there are roughly 70 people who live in Hog Hammock. Each of the island’s two most famous buildings, the R.J. Reynolds Mansion and the Sapelo Island Lighthouse, have over 200 years of history on the island, too. In short, if you want a place that’s perfect for disconnecting from the modern world, this is it. You can ride a bike down the empty streets, kayak to Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge (of Blackbeard pirate fame) for bird-watching, or simply stroll along the untouched shores—all of which can be mind-blowingly deserted. Nanny Goat Beach, for example, is completely wide-open sand with hardly a soul on it. It’s hard to believe a place like this even exists today.

Know Before You Go: This is not the place to come if you’re looking for a quick getaway. The only way to arrive at Sapelo is via a 30-minute ferry ride, provided by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources ( $5 per person ). Planning ahead is essential, as you’ll likely need to stay the night and there are very few places to crash. AirbnB may be your best bet or reserve a spot at Cabretta Campground . Locals still protect this island and its heritage as if it’s their own—because it is. A little respect goes a long way to making your visit feel rewarding.

Bonus Beach: Cumberland Island, Georgia

Location: On the far southern coast of Georgia, just across the water from Fernandina Beach, Florida Best For: Camping in one of the South’s most serene, untouched landscapes

Cumberland is Georgia’s largest and southernmost barrier island, and it’s easy to add another superlative to this list: wildest. This national seashore stretches over 17 miles of empty beaches, framed by majestic live oaks and palmettos, and is home to a population of feral horses, which you can often see passing by on the unpaved roads. The island’s isolation is its appeal, but there is plenty to do, too. There are wide sandy shores to walk on, ruins from Dungeness Mansion to explore, and an extensive network of trails to amble around on. Access to Cumberland Island is controlled via the National Park Service, and the easiest  way to get here is via a 45-minute ferry ride (and you’ll need an advanced permit if you plan to camp here). There are no stores and very limited facilities, so you also need to be self-sufficient. But the experience of camping under the stars with the sounds of the ocean and the sight of wild horses is simply unmatched.

Best Beaches in Florida

Location: A little over an hour East of Orlando, just a short drive from Kennedy Space Center Why We Love It: A surfer’s paradise with a laid-back atmosphere on Florida’s “Space Coast”

Cocoa Beach, with its endless stretches of soft, sandy beaches, and consistent waves no matter the season, is one of the East Coast’s most iconic beach destinations. No other city on the eastern seaboard is so well-known for its surfing and surf culture (it’s the hometown of Kelly Slater, after all). It lives up to the hype. There are waves for beginners and seasoned surfers alike, with the iconic Cocoa Beach Pier providing the perfect backdrop for those looking to simply enjoy the view of the lineups. The area is also steeped in space history, being just 20 miles to the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral. You can even watch a rocket launch from the beach if you time it right (check out the rocket launch calendar at the space center’s website). If you’re looking for slower-paced activities, there’s decent fishing from the pier and the Banana River is great for paddling. Windsurfing is common here, too, so there’s plenty going on, even without rocket ships to the moon.

Know Before You Go: It may seem like cheesy activity, but the nearby Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is totally worth the trip. The same can be said of the Ron Jon Surf Shop , which bills itself as the largest surf shop in the world, at 52,000 square feet.

Bonus Beach: Sebastian Inlet State Park, Florida

Location: Florida’s central east coast, roughly 17 miles north of Vero Beach Best For: Surfing and fishing excursions

Sebastian Inlet State Park is well-known for its surf breaks and its fishing spots, which are both excellent on account of the park being situated where the Indian River flows into the Atlantic. The park’s First Peak and Monster Hole offer some of the best surf breaks on the East Coast and its waters are teeming with snook, redfish, and Spanish mackerel, making it a premier fishing destination. The Indian River Lagoon has calm waters that are good for paddling and there’s even a decent trail in the park to walk on, called Hammock Trail. There are, of course, long stretches of unspoiled sand great for sunbathing and shell collecting (this is a Best Beaches list, after all.) It’s a bit of an ordeal to drive to it, because the causeways accessing the barrier island are miles apart, but that also makes it less crowded. The best part, though, is that it’s far away from the hoopla of the Miami metroplex in the south and Daytona Beach in the north, meaning this beach is totally worth the extra effort to get to it.

From the pristine landscape of Acadia National Park in Maine to the exciting wildlife in the Florida Everglades, the Atlantic East Coast offers a little something for everyone. While time constraints may make it impossible to visit every popular tourist destination along the coast, there are a number of attractions that you and your family won’t want to miss. Here are 10 Must-See Places to Visit on the East Coast:

1. Niagara Falls

Majestic roaring waterfalls awe tourists at this geological wonder located on the border of the United States and Canada. Once a honeymoon favorite, Niagara Falls remains one of most popular east coast tourist attractions in the state of New York. Comprised of three waterfalls — American Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls — Niagara Falls water stems from the upper Great Lakes and the river is estimated to be 12,000 years old.

The American and Canadian experiences of visiting Niagara Falls are like night and day. On the Canadian side, you’ll walk through Clifton Hills, an exciting district including bright lights, a towering Skywheel, and entertainment like a bowling alley and glow-in-the-dark mini-golf course. Most importantly, there is a stunning view of the falls from the Canadian side. 

Meanwhile, in the U.S., your Niagara Falls experience will be more on the natural side. When you visit Niagara Falls, America’s oldest state park, youcan go hiking, biking, fishing, and birding. For a more laid-back day, visit nearby wineries and breweries. On the U.S. side, you’re at the top of the falls, as illustrated in the photo below.

2. Acadia National Park

Inspired by its natural beauty, early 20th-century visionaries donated the land that became Acadia National Park. The park is home to a diverse population of plants and animals as well as the tallest mountain on the U.S. Atlantic coast. The only national park in all of New England, Acadia National Park offers coastal views and activities for both leisurely hikers and adrenaline junkies.

Especially in the summer, the popular Acadia National Park can often hit capacity early. It’s best to purchase your entrance pass online before you go. Then, leave your car in the town of Bar Harbor and take the free Island Explorer Shuttle into the park.

3. Statue of Liberty

We can’t make a list of the top 10 places to visit on the east coast and leave out one our most recognizable icons. A gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States, the Statue of Liberty is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, was declared a National Monument in 1924, and she was restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986. 

You can buy tickets and take a ferry to visit Liberty Island and Ellis Island from either Battery Park, NY or Liberty State Park, NJ. Tickets to see the islands are about $25, plus another $3 if you want to go in the crown. If you’re looking to cut costs and get a great picture, then we suggest hopping on the Staten Isle Ferry for free from Manhattan. While it won’t actually visit the island, you’ll get the best view of Lady Liberty.

4. Lincoln Memorial

An educational stop for parents and children alike, the Lincoln Memorial is an American national monument built to honor Abraham Lincoln. The memorial is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., across from the Washington Monument. The memorial stands 190 feet long, 119 feet wide, and almost 100 feet high. 

When you’re looking for things to do on the east coast, Washington, D.C. is a must-see. Aside from the Lincoln Memorial, our capital is home to over 160 monuments and memorials. There are plenty of free places to visit, making D.C. a great budget-friendly destination.

5. Mount Vernon

Once home to President George Washington, Mount Vernon is a very popular historic estate on America’s east coast.  Located in Alexandria, Virginia, more than millions of people have visited Mount Vernon ever since the estate was officially opened to the public. Guests to Mount Vernon can visit the mansion, Washington’s Tomb , and almost 50 acres of his plantation. Best of all, you can visit anytime – it’s open 365 days a year.

6. Shenandoah Caverns

For travelers seeking a bit of adventure, Virginia’s Luray Caverns at Shenandoah National Park offer an opportunity to escape summer’s heat or warm up on a cold winter day. Belowground temperatures hover around 56 degrees year round, so the caverns are an enjoyable attraction during any season. Best of all, families with children of all ages and abilities will be able to experience the caverns.

Outside of the caverns, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy including a mining station, garden maze, and a ropes course. The nearby town of Luray includes a National Historic District with plenty of history and quaint shops.

7. Hanging Rock State Park

If you’re ready to soak up the mountains or chill under cascading waterfalls, you won’t want to pass up Hanging Rock State Park. Park visitors can enjoy over 20 miles of hiking trails. Be sure to bring your camera for the incredible views and five magnificent waterfalls!

Hanging Rock State Park is perfect for an east coast trip, as it has 73 campsites and a limited number of cabins that house up to 6 people. It’s just an hour from Winston-Salem and Greensboro and not far from the Virginia border.

8. Biltmore Estate

Just a few hours away from Hanging Rock, you can visit one of the most impressive homes in the U.S. The grounds of the 125,000-acre Biltmore Estate were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. You might know Olmsted as the creator of New York’s Central Park and the father of American landscape architecture! Once home to George and Edith Vanderbilt, the 250-room estate in Asheville, North Carolina is now open to the public. Today, visitors can explore the estate on a self-guided house tour and experience a fresh look at how people lived and worked in America’s largest home.

9. Savannah Historic District

The largest National Historic Landmark District in the United States, Savannah, Georgia features more than twenty city squares of museums, churches, mansions, monuments and famous forts of the Revolutionary & Civil War eras. The Historic District of Savannah is accented with charming cobblestone streets and manicured gardens. This destination is an attractive destination for couples and families alike.

Some say that it’s best to visit Savannah from March to July, when the azaleas are in bloom and festival season is in full force. However, this can lead to much higher accommodation prices. We suggest in the slower months of November – February, though the city does tend to shut down for Christmas. If it’s a mild year, the trees and squares will still be lush and green, even in the winter. You’ll also see a surge of price increases in March when Savannah hosts the country’s second-largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade!

10. Florida Everglades

Hikers, divers and adventure lovers on the east coast will enjoy the Florida Everglades. Everglades National Park protects an unparalleled landscape. The park provides a natural habitat for numerous rare and endangered species like the manatee, crocodile and the Florida panther. Feeling particularly adventurous? Take your family on an airboat tour to explore the park from an entirely different perspective.

High season for the Everglades is from December through April, where you’ll get the state’s dryest and most mild weather. Unlike other destinations, this is one we wouldn’t suggest visiting on off season. Aside from facing summer temperatures in the 90’s with lots of thunderstorms, you’re much less likely to encounter wildlife who will be taking cover from the extreme temperatures.

10 Best East Coast Road Trips for History, Beaches, and Seafood

Whether you're a foodie or history buff, prefer hiking or relaxing on the beach, these East Coast road trips will truly deliver.

Unlike the West Coast, where only three states border the Pacific, a total of 14 states lie along the Atlantic shores. Road trips on the East Coast offer plenty of variety, taking in mountains, beaches, rugged seashores, large cities, small towns, and Intracoastal waterways. To top it off, seafood — from Maine's lobsters and Maryland's oysters to Florida's stone crabs — is abundant. Nearly every East Coast state has a culinary specialty as well, making food a memorable part of any East Coast road trip.

We've put together 10 of the best East Coast road trips, and while these have been broken up into easy weekend itineraries you can do from major cities, you could certainly tweak them, connect the dots, and build the ultimate multiday road trip all the way from Maine to Florida. Whatever you decide, there's plenty of adventure and lots of beautiful sights to see, from the incomparable colors of Vermont in the fall to the wild horses on the beaches of Virginia and, of course, grand cities like Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Miami.

Boston, Massachusetts to Burlington, Vermont

If you're on the East Coast when the trees begin to change color, a road trip through Vermont and New Hampshire will deliver some of the greatest autumn backdrops you could imagine. Starting in Boston, head north to Lake Winnipesaukee, where you'll find one of the country's best lake towns . Dubbed "America's oldest summer resort town," Wolfeboro is a place worth spending a night to soak up the Americana aesthetic in this town that many have called "Rockwellesque."

From the lake, drive an hour north on NH-16 to get to North Conway where you can get on the Kancamagus Highway, a top-tier National Scenic Byway for fall foliage lovers that offers scenic stopping points like waterfalls and gorges. The highway travels for 34.5 miles through the White Mountain National Forest . Once you've come out the other side in Lincoln, New Hampshire, you can continue on your way west and cross over into Vermont.

Set your sights next on Stowe, Vermont's most picturesque ski resort town , and the location of the Trapp Family Lodge , the historic home of the real von Trapp family that inspired Rodgers and Hammerstein to write "The Sound of Music." If there's no snow on the ground, the area offers plenty of trails for biking and hiking, or you can enjoy a scenic gondola ride and the charming downtown area. You'll finish the trip when you arrive in the state capital of Burlington, a small city with a youthful personality as the home of the University of Vermont. You can stock up on farm-fresh groceries at the celebrated Saturday farmers market and go barhopping among the city's many craft breweries.

Boston, Massachusetts to Acadia National Park, Maine

There's no shortage of ways to explore Boston — self-guided walking tours, museum visits, and strolls through Little Italy (in the North End) and historic spots like Faneuil Hall and Boston Common are all great options for soaking in the city. Visitors can also take a harbor cruise or ride a seasonal Swan Boat in the Public Garden lagoon. Don't leave town without sampling the city's famous clam chowder and Boston cream pie.

The fastest route on this 285-mile trip takes nearly five hours and passes through Salem, Massachusetts; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Portland, Maine; and Augusta, Maine's capital, before reaching Bar Harbor. You'll experience New England's scenery and history if you take U.S. Route 1 with a few detours along the way.

Traveling north on U.S. Route 1 from Boston, you'll pass over the Mystic River. If time allows, watch for the Yankee Division Highway heading east toward Gloucester — a worthwhile detour if you're interested in seeing lighthouses, fishermen's memorial statues, and historic buildings. Back on the highway, you'll drive north, just a mile or so from the sea most of the time, briefly passing through New Hampshire until you reach Portsmouth and enter Maine. Continue through beach towns and the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge , and take State Route 9 for a detour to Kennebunkport. Spend the night, dine on Maine lobster, and check out the stunning mansions in this nearly 400-year-old town.

Take Route 9 around the shore, then head back to U.S. Route 1 on Route 208. Continue on U.S. Route 1 to Portland, another great option for an overnight stay. From Portland, three hours on the shore-hugging scenic route will get you to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park .

New York, New York to Newport, Rhode Island

Spending a few days in Manhattan is the ideal lead-in to a relaxing road trip to a quieter town like Newport. After noshing on bagels or pizza, shopping, visiting museums, and strolling through Central Park, it could be time for a change. Don't leave without walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, meandering along The High Line , and experiencing The National September 11 Memorial Museum .

When it's time to leave, head north on Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive (FDR Drive) along the East River to the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, which spans the Harlem River. Interstate 278 then takes you through the Bronx and onto Interstate 95 through Westchester County. The highway runs northeast, close to the shore of the Long Island Sound into Connecticut. You'll pass through New Haven, home of Yale University, and have an opportunity to explore the campus.

Shortly after the town of Guilford, exit onto State Route 1, which will take you closer to the sea and add about 30 minutes to the four-hour, 185-mile trip — but it's well worth it for the views and beach access. You'll join Interstate 95 again to get back on your way to Newport, eventually exiting onto State Route 102 and then Route 138.

In Newport, park your vehicle and spend a few car-free days along the shore, strolling the three-and-a-half-mile Cliff Walk , exploring vintage mansions, and enjoying fresh seafood. Take a bike ride along one of many trails or relax on a sunset cruise.

New York, New York to Washington, D.C.

This 226-mile trip takes approximately four hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. From lower Manhattan, take the Holland Tunnel that passes under the Hudson River to New Jersey. You'll be on Interstate 78 in Jersey City, with views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty . The interstate highway crosses Newark Bay on the Vincent R. Casciano Memorial Bridge, then meets Interstate 95 heading south.

Driving south on Interstate 95 (New Jersey Turnpike), Staten Island, one of New York City's boroughs, will be on your left across a narrow body of water called Arthur Kill — the word "kill" is derived from the Dutch, influential in settling this part of the northeast. Continue south on Interstate 95 through New Jersey — maybe taking a detour to the beaches of the Jersey Shore — until you cross the Delaware River into the state of Delaware. You'll soon enter Maryland, where Interstate 95 is named John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway, cross the Susquehanna River, and go on to Baltimore.

Continue south on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (295) into Washington, D.C., where there's plenty to see and do, from museums, memorials, and monuments to outdoor activities on the waterfront. The Smithsonian museums alone could fill several days, plus there's hiking, biking, and boating for those who want to spend some time outdoors.

Baltimore, Maryland to Virginia Beach, Virginia

Starting in Baltimore, this East Coast road trip will take you on a long detour from I-95 that passes through a rare coastal landscape populated by wild horses. From Baltimore, it's a 118-mile drive across the Chesapeake Bay to Delaware's Bethany Beach, a lovely first beach to set the tone for this coastal adventure. From here, travel south along the water until you reach Ocean City, Maryland, a classic American beach town to base your adventures in Assateague State Park. Open to beach campers, this 48,000-acre stretch of grass and sand is considered one of the country's most scenic camping destinations.

You'll find wild horses roaming the landscape on Assateague and further south on Virginia's Chincoteague Island, which is your next stop. There's no main road connecting the two islands (although there are many back-country campsites) so you will have to briefly go back inland to get to Chincoteague, where you'll find even more beautiful scenery, horses, and the famous Pony Swim , which takes place every summer. During the event, spectators can watch as the horses are herded across the bay by the "Saltwater Cowboys" in an impressive display of the animals' swimming chops.

From Chincoteague Island, it's a beautiful 105-mile drive with the Atlantic on one side and the Chesapeake Bay on the other. Make sure to stop for lunch in one of the small towns along the way for fresh seafood. When you reach the end of the island, you'll travel across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and arrive at your final destination in Virginia Beach, another classic American beach town, where you'll have your pick of chic hotels and a large boardwalk with plenty of restaurants and attractions for all ages.

Washington, D.C. to Nags Head, North Carolina

After taking in the sights, restaurants, and history of our nation's capital, you may be ready to head to the beach — this trip takes you about 280 miles south to the Outer Banks of North Carolina . As with most of these road trips, there's the faster way and the more scenic route. In this case, the scenic drive adds nearly an hour to the approximately five-and-a-half-hour trip, but if you're on vacation, it's worth the additional time.

Head south out of Washington, D.C. on Interstate 395 (which turns to Interstate 95). You'll pass the Thomas Jefferson Memorial , then cross the Potomac River into Virginia. Continue south until you reach State Route 3 around Fredericksburg — head east on Route 3, then south on Route 17. Called Tidewater Trail, Route 17 meanders along next to the Rappahannock River, a spot known for outdoor fun and delicious oysters.

You'll cross the York River and the James River, which empty into the Chesapeake Bay. In the city of Newport News, take Interstate 64 southeast, and in Chesapeake, take Route 168 into North Carolina. The highway meets up with Route 158, takes you along a narrow peninsula to the Wright Memorial Bridge, and south to the Outer Banks town of Nags Head. Relax on the beach, climb to the top of the still-active Bodie Island Lighthouse , or watch the hang gliders at Jockey's Ridge State Park among massive sand dunes.

Charlotte, North Carolina to Gatlinburg, Tennessee

For this scenic East Coast road trip, you'll travel to the heart of Appalachia, starting in Charlotte, North Carolina where you can pay a visit to the NASCAR Hall of Fame . From here, you'll head west to Asheville, another city with a lot of character and a unique history. Consider this your gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park . While in town, you should stop by The Biltmore Estate, the impressive mansion of the famously rich Vanderbilt family, and plan to spend sunset at the Omni Grove Park Inn , a historic hotel that once hosted American authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald and also has the best sunset views in town.

From Asheville, get yourself to the Blue Ridge Parkway, a road that provides 469 miles to explore the poetic Appalachian Mountain landscape from the comfort of your car — with plenty of stopping points to enjoy a cozy cabin lodge or gentle hike. The road goes northwest through Virginia, but we recommend traveling southwest to finish in the Smoky Mountains and then crossing the national park until you reach Gatlinburg. For a trip this grand, why not plan a big finale and book a night in one of the region's luxury tree houses? The Sanctuary Tree House Resort in nearby Pigeon Forge is home to beautiful feats of architecture with real tree houses boasting trip-making amenities like outdoor hot tubs and swinging day beds.

Wilmington, North Carolina to Savannah, Georgia

Start or end this road trip by spending a few days in the riverfront city of Wilmington, strolling Cape Fear's 1.75-mile Riverwalk , browsing the shops, or dining at one of the waterfront cafes or restaurants. Tour the Battleship North Carolina , just across the river from downtown, to catch a glimpse of its role in World War II's Pacific Theater. Spend a day at the beach or ride in a horse-drawn carriage among Wilmington's historic mansions.

When it's time to begin your drive south to Savannah, you have a few options. The fastest route is inland on Interstate 95, a little less than five hours for 300 miles. But take your time and drive near the coast on U.S. Route 17. While this will add around an hour, you'll pass through small towns and be able to stop for lunch on a nearby beach. If time allows, you could happily take three days or more to enjoy this scenic and historic section of the coast.

Head west across the Cape Fear River, then U.S. Route 17 takes you inland for a few miles south before you get close to the Atlantic shore for most of the drive. You'll pass Shallotte, its river of the same name, and the Brunswick Islands , five barrier islands with beaches, seafood, and a historic atmosphere. North Carolina's Outer Banks region, which comprises 100 miles of shoreline, is a popular summer destination, and you might decide to spend some time (or even a night) in one of the beachside towns.

Myrtle Beach in South Carolina might be your next stop, or you can continue your scenic drive along the shore and spend the night in Charleston. Continue on U.S. Route 17, driving near the Sea Islands — hundreds of barrier islands along the shores of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida — for about two hours, before arriving in Savannah.

Savannah, Georgia to Orlando, Florida

It may not be easy to leave Savannah's squares, parks, riverfront, and restaurants, but if you're planning a visit to Orlando's theme parks and many attractions, it's time to get on the road. Most of the 300-mile trip will be on Interstate 95, which runs fairly close to the coast, but there's a short detour that takes you to Sea Island , Little St. Simons Island , and Jekyll Island that's well worth an extra hour or more.

Take Interstate 16 West out of Savannah to meet up with Interstate 95 South — you'll drive mostly inland, but pass over creeks and streams along the way. Shortly after the Altamaha River, watch for a turnoff onto State Route 99, then take Route 17 south. Take a road to whichever island you want to visit. Then, continue on Route 17, which meets up with Interstate 95 again. Continue south, passing Amelia Island, and on toward Jacksonville, where you'll cross the St. Johns River.

You'll drive near the coast as you pass St. Augustine, the nation's oldest city, and a variety of beach towns. At Daytona Beach, home of the Daytona International Speedway , head southwest on Interstate 4, passing Lake Monroe and on to Orlando, where hotels, Disney World, Epcot, Universal Studios, and entertainment of all kinds await. Explore the natural surroundings at Shingle Creek Regional Park , where you can paddle a canoe or kayak, or enjoy a quiet picnic.

Miami, Florida to Key West, Florida

This classic road trip takes you to the furthest reaches of Highway 1 and the southernmost point of the continental U.S. From Miami, it's a 164-mile drive to Key West, but it's a trip that should be broken up along the way to enjoy the diversity of the many islands that make up the Florida Keys — and maybe even a detour to Everglades National Park if you've always wanted to see gators in person. Before you set out, make sure you take the proper time to enjoy the scene of South Beach, have a cafecito on Calle Ocho in Little Havana, and take a few shots for the 'gram at Wynwood Walls .

From Miami, embrace the laid-back style of the Keys by traveling slowly, first stopping at Key Largo for a slice of Key Lime Pie at Mrs. Mac's Kitchen . As you roll down Highway 1 past Islamorada and Marathon, you'll see fabulous resorts and cozy bed-and-breakfasts but for an experience that's a little different, park the car and hop on a boat to the celebrated Little Palm Island , a private island resort where you can have your own luxury bungalow. You can spend the entire trip exploring the many wildlife-rich snorkeling and diving spots, especially if you take an excursion to Dry Tortugas National Park , a protected marine reserve.

For literature fans and animal lovers, a visit to the Hemingway Home and Museum is a must, where you can meet the unique six-toed cats descended from the great American author's precious pet Snowball who lived there with him in the 1930s. Of course, with only one way to go from Key West, the drive back is just as scenic as the drive there, so keep track of your favorite spots and make sure you never miss the sunset, which is magnificent from just about every angle.

Hidden Gems On The East Coast USA, To Beat the Crowds

Fancy a road trip down the East Coast, ferreting out some beautiful hidden gems and secret towns? Or looking for a scenic East Coast weekend getaway without crowds?

If so, I’ve got you covered with a dizzying array of 20+ quaint clapboard-and-brick towns. 

These less touristy East Coast towns make the perfect getaway — with mountains, sparkling freshwater lakes, and impressive art and foodie scenes.

I’ve lived most of my life on the east coast and summered there often — from New Hampshire, to Boston, to Washington DC, and now to Pittsburgh.

I know where you can discover the most beautiful and salt-tinged spots, destinations. Places where frazzled urbanites and rusticators can escape the crowds and disappear into history or nature.

These off the beaten path East Coast towns will astound you with their unique blend of culture, culinary cred, and natural beauty.

You can string them together in one long road trip, pick several towns to fashion a week long regional itinerary, or pick one special spot for an idyllic weekend getaway.

Hidden Gem Towns on the East Coast

Let’s take a road trip through the less touristy places and hidden gem towns to visit on the East Coast, from north to south.

1. Stowe Vermont

New England is awash in winter resort towns. But picturesque Stowe is an incredible year round destination you can’t help but fall in love with.

Come summer, Stowe swaps skiing for hiking, golf, mountain biking, kayaking, swimming, and scenic drives up the winding Auto Toll Road. For a magical experience, you can go hot air ballooning over the Green Mountains.

Where mountainous Stowe really shines is its hiking trails, with a range of options to suit every level of experience. Some take you to towering peaks, others end in waterfalls.

When you’re done hiking, snack on some apple cider donuts or indulge in a Vermont Maple Sugar Body Scrub at the Snowflake Spa.

Stowe has a romantic and picture perfect downtown. Its white steepled church is the focal point. The tiny Main Street is filled with boutiques, crafts stores, and antique shops. There are libraries, museums, theaters, and cultural organizations to keep your entertained.

2. Burlington Vermont

In Vermont, there’s a saying that “you can’t throw a stone without hitting a poet/painter/potter.” As the largest town in a state of small hamlets, Burlington has developed a wonderful art scene.

To some, Burlington is akin to a mini Seattle. It’s a politically and socially progressive enclave of college students, regional power brokers, and creative minds.

The jewel of Burlington’s art scene is the Fleming Museum on the University of Vermont campus. The museum has a wide range of artworks and artists. In June, you can attend the Arts Alive Festival.

The Firehouse Center for the Arts also hosts year round exhibitions and art programs.

If you want to see a show, head to the Flynn Performing Arts Center. It’s a fully restored art deco masterpiece. The Fynn hosts concerts, plays, and traveling Broadway shows.

If you’re a foodie, Burlington will suit. It outshines much of the US with a bounty of locally grown food. Farm to table eating isn’t just trendy; it’s a well established tradition. There’s even excellent street food at Farmers and Foragers Food Truck.

3. Brattleboro Vermont

Located on the banks of the Connecticut River, Brattleboro is a gorgeous town and definitely off the beaten path. Your first stop should be the Creamery Covered Bridge, a historic landmark dating from 1879.

Brattleboro’s downtown has been revitalized. It’s now full of art galleries, upper story artist studios, and a broad array of art venues.

The Brattleboro Art Museum in housed in a restored railroad depot. It presents 8 exhibitions annually and has pieces by Andy Warhol, Wolf Kahn, and Janet Fish.

Brattleboro also has a performing arts scene focused on classical music. The marquis venue is the Marlboro Music School. Brattleboro hosts the New England Bach Festival, a winter Chamber Music Series, and the Vermont Renaissance Festival (in nearby Vernon).

Brattleboro also has a great foodie scene. Apart from the excellent restaurants, you can hit the popular Brattleboro Area Farmers’ Market, held every Wednesday and Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Or try the famed Dosa Kitchen, a food truck with a farm to table ethos serving a creative menu of Indian food.

4. White Mountains, New Hampshire

New Hampshire is so underrated. Its venerable White Mountains are a true nature lover’s dream spot. If you’re looking for a slice of unadulterated East Coast charm, you’ll love this area. There’s a whole community of businesses and people that embrace this gorgeous landscape.

You can go on horseback rides, moose safaris, tubing in the Saco River, zip lining, and kayaking. Take the Cog, a historic railroad, to the summit of Mt. Washington, the Northeast’s highest peak.

Be whisked away on the Canon Mountain Aerial Tramway in beautiful Franconia Notch State Park. Or hike the Falling Waters Trail to beautiful waterfalls.

When you’re done getting your exercise, you can browse for antiques in the country towns of Sugar Hill, Bethlehem, or Littleton. For a base in the White Mountains, stay in Conway, Lincoln, or Jackson.

5. Hanover, New Hampshire

My son and I both attended Dartmouth College. So naturally, I’m partial to Hanover (and all things New England , truth be told). For a tiny rural town that’s an East Coast hidden gem, Hanover packs a surprising art punch. It’s accessible too, easily reached from Boston or Concord.

The best place to get your art fix is the wonderful Hood Museum of Art. It’s one of the oldest teaching museums in the country. It has a large collection of artifacts and art dating back to Assyrian culture in 900 BC.

But it’s not all ancient. The museum has a surprisingly good collection of contemporary art, with works by Rothko and Ed Ruscha. It also showcases contemporary African and Native American art. Inside Baker Library, you’ll find eye catching murals by Jose Clemente Orozco in the reading room. I used to study right next to them in college.

Hanover is also home to the Hopkins Center for Performing Arts (the “HOP”). There, you’ll find a wide variety of performing arts — plays, shows, concerts, special events, movies, etc.

6. Bar Harbor, Maine | Acadia National Park

Perched on Frenchman Bay, tiny Bar Harbor is a charming hidden gem town in New England. It’s adjacent to Acadia National Park, so you can visit both in a single trip.

The town’s name derives from the twice daily tide drop, when a gravelly sand bar appears creating a natural harbor.

Seaside Bar Harbor is the perfect place to go kayaking or boating. You can take a  2 hour cruise .

You can also walk the shore path, which includes a self-guided tour marked with signs telling the history of Bar Harbor. And don’t forget to have lobster! Or go on a guided food tour to discover all the best eats.

Then spend some time in Acadia National Park, Maine’s only national park. Start with the Bowl Trail, which winds around to beautiful Bowl Lake. Then climb up Mount Champlain (trickier trails) or Gotham Mountain (easer climb).

7. Camden, Maine

Camden is a jewel on the coast of Maine. It’s a mecca for sailing. And Camden offers a beguiling nexus of art, dining, and outdoor play. It fulfills Maine’s slogan of “the way life should be.”

At the north end of Camden’s main shopping district, there’s a pretty library with a lawn and benches above the harbor. There’s a great collection of schooners, sailboats, and yachts that make wonderful pictures.

Stop by the Smiling Cow, the Cashmere Goat, the Owl & Turtle Bookshop, and the Leather Bench for some unique gift ideas.

No visit to Camden is complete without taking in the view from Mount Battie. Take the a 1.4 mile trail and road. At the top, you have a hawk’s eye view of Camden and the islands of Penobscot Bay.

If you want to hit the beach, try Barret’s Cove, a fresh water beach on Megunticook Lake. It’s even quiet in the summer months.

8. Block Island, Rhode Island

Want an alternative to pricey and overcrowded Cape Cod? Try the time warp beachy charms of Block Island. It’s just 13 miles off the coast of Rhode Island.

Block Island is a diminutive playground with vast sandy beaches and Victorian homes. Block Island is casual. You come here to tie on a lobster bib, sip a beer, enjoy ocean breezes, and watch the sunset.

Besides, how much luxury do you really need? And how wonderful is it to lose the crowds?

You arrive by sea on a boat from Point Judith in Galilee. Get some wheels and take a short ride up High Street to the Mohegan Bluffs. The drive is a bit nerve-racking. But the stunning view is worth the tension. Relax and catch rays on beautiful Mansion Beach. Then it’s time for happy hour.

Block Island is littered with porches with a water view. Perhaps the nicest one is at the Spring House Hotel. Then have dinner in the Victorian-styled Hotel Manisses, dining in a lovely garden setting.

9. Aquinnah, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

Martha’s Vineyard fills up fast with vacationers in the summer from Boston and New York. They come for the island’s breathtaking natural beauty, vibrant cultural scene, and savvy foodie venues.

But the crowds are centered in the northern edge of the island. Down southwest, or “up island” as the locals call it, is a little hidden gem on the East Coast, Aquinnah. Locals and island veterans head to the small town to beat the crowds.

Located below the clay colored Aquinnah Cliffs (a national landmark), the white sand Moshup Beach is a sanctuary from the horde.

There’s a cleared path that takes you downhill to the beach, which is strewn with enormous boulders. It’s one of the best beaches in the US.

10. Chatham Massachusetts

The Cape is a no-brainer. But where to stake your claim without crowds?

Try the inimitable charms of Chatham, a secret tony town on the East Coast. The homes induce jaw drops, the historic center is walkable, and the seafood is hauled in just offshore.

Chatham’s curving Main Street conjures up low key elegance and old world charm. Chatham is the only Cape Code town bounded on three sides by water. It’s consistently ranked as one of the US’ best beach towns.

Chatham Lighthouse Beach is considered the most scenic public beach. It’s set beneath Chatham’s iconic lighthouse. This wild stretch of the Atlantic is the place for long walks and sunbathing (the surf is rough).

If you need a dose of culture with your beach retreat, head to the Orpheum. It’s a restored vintage theater showing first run movies and classics. Or take in a play or musical at the Monomoy Theater, after browsing the casual to high end shops.

11. Northampton Massachusetts

Just 2 hours from Boston , the rural town of Northampton is a cultural nerve center in New England. It’s a pretty town, ringed by 5 colleges and college museums.

Grand mansions line tree-shaded streets. The Main Street is filled with with shops, art galleries, bookshops, etc.

In downtown Northampton, there are more than a dozen visual arts venues. The Northampton Center for the Arts offers poetry readings, film screenings, and concerts. The Calvin Theater is the premiere concert venue, hosing major touring music and comedy acts.

Four of the five colleges near Northampton offer theater and visual arts. Smack in the middle of Northampton is Smith College. Its beautiful Smith College Museum of Art just received a $35 million makeover. The museum offers a year round series of art lectures, contemporary art exhibitions, and films.

Just down the road is Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. It offers contemporary and traditional exhibitions year round. You can also admire contemporary work at Amherst’s Mead Art Museum or check out national and international exhibits at Amherst’s University Gallery.

12. Woodstock New York

Tucked into a bucolic setting in the Catskills Mountains, Woodstock is known as America’s Colony of the Arts. It’s an outpost of the American Arts & Crafts Movement, one of my favorite design styles. And a Shangri-la for New York weekenders escaping the bustle of the big city.

There’s so much to do! Woodstock Guild operates Byrdcliffe Arts Colony (in conjunction with Cornell), the Kleinert/James Art Center, the Fleur de Lis Gallery, the Byrdcliffe Barn, and the Byrdcliffe Theater. The art center houses traveling exhibitions, while the gallery focuses on fine crafts.

Founded in 1920, the Woodstock Artists Association is the town’s primary visual arts venue. In addition to three exhibition galleries, the Association also hosts artists lectures and art workshops.

Its permanent collection has both traditional and very modern work. Many of the artists exhibiting also have representation in New York City.

13. Ithaca New York

In Ithaca, you will feast your eyes on one of the must see hidden towns on the East Coast. Situated in the southern Finger Lakes region of New York, the city is a natural wonder no matter when you visit.

Ithaca is well known as the setting for Cornell University. But it’s also an enticing blend of artistic, intellectual, and rural cultures. There are so many restaurants (most on Aurora Street) that none can afford to be mediocre. And the sounds of live jazz, bluegrass, or rock fill the streets.

In the winter, the sublime waterfalls at Taughannock Falls State Park freeze around the icy gorges. In the autumn, the changing leaves in Robert H. Treman State Park steal the spotlight.

With the onset of spring and summer, the vineyards along scenic Cayuga Lake Wine Trail command your attention.

A nice hike is up the Cascadilla Creek Gorge. Fuel up at Gimme Coffee, and take the vigorous half hour walk past cliffs and waterfalls. At the top, turn left and you’ll be on the handsome college campus. A must visit site for art lovers is the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Fine Art, designed by I.M. Pei.

14. Sag Harbor New York

The Hamptons are popular. But authentic Sag Harbor, dating back to the 1700s, still remains one of the East Coast’s best kept secrets.

Tucked between East Hampton and Southampton, charming Sag Harbor is the “un-Hampton” — an old whaling town where many of its buildings are still original (and on the National Register of Historic Places). This is where you’ll find peace, quiet, and sea air.

But there’s plenty of things to do in Sag Harbor — nature preserves, galleries, museums. The Bay Street Theater serves up year round entertainment.

Nearby is the Pollack-Krasner House & Study Center, where artist Jackson Pollack holed up to get away from distractions in NYC and focus on Abstract Expressionism.

Along Main Street, there are plenty of shops, design stores, book stores, and cafes. Right in the middle of the Hampton’s bays and islands, Sag Harbor is the perfect place for a weekend of beach lounging, gawking at mansions, and dining on fresh seafood.

15. Madison, Connecticut

Madison is a place only east Coasters know about. The town proves the adage that good things come in small packages.

With a population of only 18,000+ residents, this Connecticut shoreline town delivers a major dose of quintessential New England charm. During his time at Yale, Bill Clinton was so taken with Madison that he mentioned it in his memoir, My Life , calling it “especially old and beautiful.”

One of the main draws of Madison is Hammonasset Beach State Park. There you’ll find two miles of beaches, wetlands, woodlands, and a nice boardwalk. The town itself is charming and pedestrianized, full of shops and cafes. A popular haunt is RJ Julis Booksellers, one of the nation’s finest independent shops for book nerds looking for the perfect read.

Madison is also a culture filled hamlet. A fun outdoor activity is walking The Sculpture Mile. Created by the Hollycroft Foundation, it offers a unique museum-like exhibition that features art work by some of the nation’s most significant sculptors.

16. Lancaster Pennsylvania

Steeped in history, Lancaster is one of the oldest inland towns in the US. Dubbed the Red Rose City, Lancaster was originally settled by the Pennsylvania Dutch. Thousands still live this “plain” lifestyle.

You can get a first hand experience of the Amish lifestyle by taking a guided tour or a buggy ride. You can shop for Amish crafts and furniture. Or chow down on authentic Pennsylvania Dutch baked goods, such as whoopie/shofly/schnitz pie.

Lancaster is also a great cultural pit stop, home to an eclectic collection of art galleries on Gallery Row. There, you’ll find vibrant paintings, hand crafted ceramic pottery, and antiques. The music scene is surging as well, with Tellus 360 as the hottest venue and bar.

Just a few blocks from Gallery Row, you’ll find Building Character. It’s a large warehouse stocked with all manner of vintage finds and handmade crafts. Housed in a handsome red brick building, a stop at Lancaster Central Market is a must do. You’ll find both regional and ethnic specialities. If the weather is balmy, you can eat your meal in Penn Square.

To end your day with a dose of culture, head to Fulton Theater. It’s one of the nation’s oldest woking theaters. The theater hosts world class plays, musicals, and other productions.

17. Mill Run Pennsylvania

Mill Run is where you’ll find perhaps the most famous home in the United States, Frank Lloyd Wright’s remarkable Fallingwater. Fallingwater is nestled in a bucolic setting, atop a cascading waterfall. It’s the apotheosis of Wright’s long lasting obsession with nature and a must see architectural site in the US.

Fallingwater is likely the most significant building of the 20th century. Fallingwater is eye-grabbing and visually stunning. It’s a marriage of modern architecture and a wild landscape that blurs the line between the indoor and outdoor.

Wright brilliantly sited Fallingwater on top of the waterfall and anchored it to a boulder, so it would emerge “like a plant from the earth.” From any room in the house, you can hear the falling water.

On July 7, 2019, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee officially inscribed The 20th Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright , to its UNESCO World Heritage List. The designation includes Fallingwater and seven other Frank Lloyd Wright sites.

18. Gettysburg Pennsylvania

If you’re a history buff, a trip to patriotic Gettysburg is a must. This southern Pennsylvania city in the rolling countryside is easy on the eyes.

It also serves up a wholloping dose of history. Gettysburg is the site of the Battle of Gettysburg (an important 3 day battle of the Civil War) and President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

You can relive the mournful history by touring the Gettysburg National Battlefield. Start with the Gettysburg Museum for an overview of the town’s history served up by a Morgan Freedom narrated film.

There are 1400 statues and monument on the battlefield. When you’re done there, stop in at Dwight Eisenhower’s home, which is now a museum.

Downtown Gettysburg has a charming Main Street, lined with shops and cafes. many of the shops stock Civil War memorabilia, folk art, and Americana. On Lincoln Square, you’ll find The David Willis House, were Lincoln stayed preparing his speech.

19. Roanoke Virgina

This historic city is set against the backdrop of the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains. There are literally hundreds of different hiking trails making it the perfect summer spot, if you’re looking for a luscious slice of nature.

Roanoke is magical in the Fall, when the leaves turn deep copper red. But you don’t have to wait until Fall to see Roanoke’s historic spots.

While it’s a nice rural escape, Roanoke also has impressive museums, a doughty cathedral, a performing arts center, and a hot restaurant scene. You can even go on a 3 hour guided culture and food tour .

Whenever you decide to come, make sure you visit the gorgeous Carvins Cove Natural Reserve and the Roanoke Valley Greenways, which are stunning to explore.

Or, just 20 minutes from downtown, hike the trail head to McAfee Knob, one of the most photographed spots on the Appalachian Trail.

20. Asheville North Carolina

Asheville has a chill laid back vibe. It’s part history set piece, part college town, and part urban renaissance showcase. The charming town is known for its art scene, brewery scene, and eclectic atmosphere.

The main activity is just strolling around. You can do it yourself, or get oriented with a 2 hour guided walking tour .

Asheville’s two must see sites are the Basilica of Saint Lawrence and the Biltmore Estate. The basilica is designed in a Spanish Renaissance style.

The Xanadu-like Biltmore Estate is George Vanderbilt’s 250 room French renaissance castle, America’s largest home.

Downtown Asheville is delightful. The sidewalks are filled with al fresco cafes, coffee bars, and markets. In the summer, the Biltmore Estate hosts outdoor concerts on the south terrace and gourmet dining festivals.

Asheville’s crown jewel for visual arts is the Asheville Art Museum. It serves up exhibitions, lectures, films, and art workshops.

Asheville also has an energetic live theater community — North Carolina Stage Company, Asheville Community Theater, and Highly Repertory Theater.

21. Corolla | Outer Banks North Carolina

As a former Washington DC resident, I’ve been going to the laid back Outer Banks for beach vacations off and on for 20+ years. It’s not just for lawyers and lobbyists.

Vacationers from both sides of the Mason Dixon line flock to North Carolina’s Outer Banks to enjoy the warm water and endless miles of sand.

Though the Outer Banks is uber-popular, its beaches aren’t terribly crowded. Especially if you stay at the northern end. My preference is Corolla.

If you’re looking for things to do in the Outer Banks besides hitting the beach, there are plenty of options. You can go sky diving with Skydive OBX, visit the Wright Brothers Memorial, admire local art at the Seaside Art Gallery, and climb the historic lighthouses

Living in Vero Beach, I am surrounded by incredibly interesting and beautiful towns running up and down the coast that are so close in mileage yet so far away otherwise. I am continually taking road trips to visit and discover as many as I can. From beautiful beaches to one of the most historical cities in America, the pride of the space program to hidden gems, here are eleven beautiful towns you must visit on Florida’s East Coast apart from Vero Beach.

My list runs north to south, so you could easily get in your car, make St. Augustine your starting point and Miami your final destination, and see them all in one fell swoop.

11 Amazing Things to Do on the East Coast of Florida

1. st. augustine.

Explore Florida’s Historic Coast, home to St. Augustine , one of the favorite and most visited Florida cities. The Fountain of Youth Archeological Park has beautiful grounds to see, costumed interpreters in action, and, of course, the waters from the Fountain of Youth. You can even watch the cannons being fired into the Matanzas River daily. Keep the history lesson going with a visit to Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States.

Dining in St. Augustine is phenomenal, with Cuban cuisine at the Columbia Restaurant, great Southern appetizers from The Floridian , amazing seafood creations at Catch 27, and gourmet burgers at Michael’s Tasting Room. Save room for incredible ice cream sandwiches from Peace Pie.

Stay at the St. Francis Inn bed and breakfast, the oldest inn in Florida, where you’ll enjoy cozy, comfy rooms, an afternoon social, and free breakfast (that’s delicious, I might add). They have a fabulous pool and are within walking distance (or use one of the guest bikes) of most St. Augustine attractions .

2. Titusville

Titusville is an underrated Florida East Coast Town that is often overshadowed by the cities on its north and south sides. There is a cute downtown in Titusville, a fantastic brewery ( Playalinda ), pristine parks, and many reasons to stop for a visit.

Titusville is also home to the iconic Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Visitor Complex, the best place in the world for learning about the space program, astronauts, and rockets. You can dine with an astronaut, my favorite offering at KSC. You’ll learn firsthand about his/her career, space missions, and personal life. The food is good, too. Be sure to schedule several hours for your visit to the center; the exhibits are numerous, and you’ll get sucked in looking at everything and learning.

Aside from dining at the Space Center, you can eat at one of two iconic places in Titusville : Dixie Crossroads Restaurant, known for fresh seafood, corn fritters, and themed dining rooms, or Loyd Have Mercy Restaurant, delicious soul food in a cute space with the best fried chicken and collard greens outside of Mississippi.

3. Sebastian

Sebastian is a small town on Florida’s East Coast that is gaining popularity — and fast. Stay in unique and stylish waterfront cottages at Island View Cottages. These gorgeous units have a historic backstory with a modern-day facelift, free use of bicycles and kayaks, and are the perfect get-away-from-everything place to stay. Sebastian is also a great place to drop a line and catch snook, flounder, snapper, and Spanish mackerel.

Enjoy sweet and savory crepes for breakfast at Hen House Eatery and Florida’s best hot peel-and-eat shrimp from Blackfins at Captain Hirams for lunch or dinner.

A fun and free (donations accepted) attraction in Sebastian is LaPorte Farms , a private animal encounter with tropical birds, llama, zebra, and tortoises. You can also choose a free book from the massive Little Free Library on the property.

4. Fort Pierce

Just south of where I live, Fort Pierce is my new stomping grounds. Here, you’ll find a laid-back Old Florida town with modern-day amenities and fantastic restaurants. For the best seafood choices, 12A Buoy and Cobb’s Landing are both excellent.

I recommend visiting the A. E. Backus Museum and Gallery (named after and dedicated to the works of the Florida landscape painter) and then crossing the street for the $1-admission Manatee Observation and Education Center, which focuses on manatee education and coastal awareness and has a cute gift shop. Then, step outside to see the manatees, weather permitting, as they are temperamental if the weather is cold. Sip a tasty craft beer at Sailfish Brewing Company, only a few blocks away.

If you are visiting on a Saturday, enjoy one of Florida’s biggest farmers markets at Marina Square on the waterfront from 8 a.m. until noon. Also in Fort Pierce: one of our picks for the nine best hikes in beautiful Florida .

5. Jensen Beach

Jensen Beach is a lesser-known treasure on Florida’s East Coast. Go out on the water by pontoon, airboat, sailboat, or kayak for an ecotourism jaunt around the Indian River Lagoon to learn about the unique landscape (the most bio-diverse lagoon ecosystem in North America). Rental and tour companies are plentiful.

Jensen Beach was the biggest pineapple supplier in the world at one time, so naturally, there is a Pineapple Festival to honor that heritage. You can enjoy live music, great food, carnival-style rides, and crafts for sale the next time this fun-filled event is hosted.

A great place to stay is the Jensen Beach Inn , situated in the cool downtown area. Eat breakfast at Jan’s Place, go to Crawdaddy’s for Cajun and creole cuisine, and try Sauder’s Landing for fine-dining and dinner classics. Jensen has a dynamic downtown with lots to see, including an arts enclave with working artists and fantastic gifts.

6. Palm Beach

Palm Beach is a small area on Florida’s East Coast with one of its wealthiest zip codes. You’ll find shopping comparable to Rodeo Drive or Worth Avenue. This is the place for upscale boutiques, dining, and extraordinary art galleries.

My favorite attraction in Palm Beach is the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum . Called Whitehall, this Gilded Age winter estate of the railroad baron has room after room (75 in total) of beautiful antiques, art, and treasures. Stay for a proper afternoon tea at Cafe des Beaux-Arts (currently closed for the season) with panoramic views of Lake Worth and the West Palm Beach skyline. West Palm Beach is separated from neighboring Palm Beach by the beautiful Lake Worth Lagoon.

Escape to paradise at the fantastic Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort and Spa on nearby Singer Island. Rooms are stylishly decorated and have everything you could want, while the outside patio has inviting fire pits that invite you to sit and relax.

7. Delray Beach

Delray Beach — one of seven magical U.S. towns to visit during the holidays — is one of Florida’s most talked about artsy towns. Atlantic Avenue is the main thoroughfare lined with swaying palms, high-brow art galleries, unique boutiques, and fantastic restaurants. For lunch or dinner, try Vic and Angelo’s orecchiette with Italian sausage or Rocco’s Tacos yummy Austin Queso and guacamole. Order a hibiscus-flavored margarita if you’ve never tried one.

Delray Beach is home to a historic treasure, the Colony Hotel . Stay at the downtown location, which is brimming with Old Florida charm. It has private beach access, cabanas, and a saltwater pool at the Colony Cabana Club just 2 miles from the hotel, plus, it’s pet-friendly.

While in Delray Beach, consider taking a Taste History food tour to learn the area’s history and sample four to five local eateries. You can also play your favorite games and old-school pinball machines at Silverball Museum Retro Arcade.

8. Hollywood

In Hollywood, my top-rated attraction is the Broadwalk, a 2.2-mile pedestrian boardwalk along the Atlantic Ocean and Hollywood Beach with ice cream and souvenir shops and impeccable views. You can rent low-riders, adult tricycles, surreys, bikes, and special needs equipment at Sun and Fun Cycles to explore the Broadwalk differently.

The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project is incredible. I think Hollywood has the best murals in all of Florida, with jaw-dropping artwork all through the town. Art-lovers will also appreciate Hollywood’s Art and Culture Center.

Stay at the mammoth Margaritaville Beach Resort with eight dining options and the FlowRider surfing simulator in the front of the Broadwalk. You’ll have access to great pools with excellent sunbathing and tropical cocktails to enhance your vacation.

Miami is home to all walks of life, visitors from all over the world, the best Cuban offerings outside of Cuba, and second-to-none people-watching opportunities. Start your Miami experience at the Lincoln Road Mall, South Florida’s premier open-air shopping, dining, and entertainment complex. It features pedestrian-only streets with sidewalk cafes down the center. Have a coffee and pastry at Paul Bakery Cafe or enjoy shopping at 80+ stores.

My favorite thing to do in Miami is to take a Bike and Roll Miami Segway ride around South Beach. If you’ve never tried it, riding a Segway is easy and great fun. Learn how during a 10- to 15-minute crash course (don’t worry, you won’t tip over), then zip along Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive amid the priceless antique and import cars. Take in the art deco capital of the world’s stunning architecture, waterfront, parks, and local neighborhoods.

Conclude your Miami visit with a stop in Little Havana, the Miami neighborhood that is as Cuban as it gets. Feast on a Media Noche sandwich and cortadito (a Cuban coffee with a little milk) at Versailles Restaurant , an authentic eatery. While you’re there, make time for Maximo Gomez Park on historic Calle Ocho, where you can see the dozens of domino players, then browse the shops for Little Havana souvenirs and apparel.

10. Daytona Beach

It is popularly known for its world-class theme parks, family-friendly attractions, and a wide range of activities for kids. A few popular spots to explore include the Walt Disney Resort which is a magical experience filled with exciting characters, attractions, and tons of fun entertainment.

Next, LegoLand is a must-visit as well. It has rides, shows, and several exhibits. If you take a vacation here, be sure to book a room at the LegoLand hotel, it’s an experience you do not want your kids to miss.

Rochester, New York

A stop at Rochester, NY is sure to blow your mind. Take a trip down to the Strong National Museum of Play which is the ultimate play place for all kids. It is a huge space with tons of interactive exhibits for kids. Depending on the ages of your kids, you could spend an entire day exploring different exhibits.

If you have less time, look at the map and plan out the exhibits appropriate for each age group of your kids. A few favorite exhibits include the butterfly garden, zip-lining, video game Hall of Fame, Wegman’s shop, and more. 

Another great stop here is the Seabreeze Amusement Park which offers visitors over 60 attractions including thrilling roller coasters, family rides, kiddie rides, and a waterpark. 

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a city rich in history and culture, and there are plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy.
