‘Top Gun’: 30 Things You Didn’t Know About the Tom Cruise Classic (Photos)

Fighter-pilot blockbuster was released on May 16, 1986

Top Gun

Now that “Top Gun” is revving up for a sequel , TheWrap counts down 30 facts about the iconic movie you may not have already known.

(The facts not directly cited in this gallery came from the 30th anniversary edition Blu-ray/DVD of “Top Gun.”)

tom cruise photos top gun

1. The role of Maverick was written expressly for Cruise — whose performance in “All the Right Moves” gave the writers inspiration for the part.

tom cruise photos top gun

2. Cruise was initially reluctant to take the role of Maverick, but his mind was immediately changed after his first time up in the air with The Blue Angels.

tom cruise photos top gun

3. Val Kilmer initially turned down the part of Iceman until director Tony Scott tracked him down and passionately recruited him.

tom cruise photos top gun

4. When it was in the casting phase, “Top Gun” became the hot title around town. Nearly all young Hollywood men wanted to be involved, including a very young Charlie Sheen , who was said to be willing to take any part, even a small one. (He didn’t get one.)

tom cruise photos top gun

5. Scott’s original vision for the film was “‘Apocalypse Now’ in an aircraft carrier.” He later realized it was a “definite popcorn movie… the rock ‘n’ roll stars of the sky.”

tom cruise photos top gun

6. The original script called for Goose’s death to be the result of a midair collision. The Navy wouldn’t approve that, so they changed it to a scenario that was more plausible, depicting an accident that actually happened (but didn’t result in death).

tom cruise photos top gun

7. The look of the actors in the pilot program was inspired by Bruce Weber’s photography, specifically his first book featuring scantily clad (and some nude) male models in a military theme.

tom cruise photos top gun

8. The original title of the film was “Top Guns” — plural.

tom cruise photos top gun

9. Kelly McGillis’ love interest character, Charlie, was originally supposed to be an officer. But the Navy wouldn’t approve a script involving two officers fraternizing. Filmmakers needed the Navy’s involvement, so they changed her profession to that of a Navy consultant, one who assesses pilot performance.

tom cruise photos top gun

10. Scott had to fight the studio to cast McGillis. Execs wanted a younger “more fashionable” actress to play opposite Cruise.

tom cruise photos top gun

11. Remember John Stockwell, who plays Cougar in a memorable scene at the beginning of the film when he gets so scared he struggles to land his jet? He’s gone on to direct sun-soaked popcorn flicks like 2002’s “Blue Crush,” with Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez , and 2005’s “Into the Blue,” with Paul Walker and Jessica Alba , along with the 2006 horror movie “Turistas.”

tom cruise photos top gun

12. The love scene was shot after filming wrapped. Yes, there was no love scene in the script!

tom cruise photos top gun

13. McGillis’ hair was different by that time, she recalled in a 2013 interview, so that’s why the sexy sequence made use of silhouettes and dim lighting. (McGillis’ wrong hairdo is also why she wore a hat in the elevator sequence, also part of reshoots.)

tom cruise photos top gun

14. McGillis, knew Kilmer before the movie, she revealed in the aforementioned interview. They went to Julliard together.

tom cruise photos top gun

15. Encouraged by filmmakers to do so, the cast partied a whole lot during the production in order to get into character. “I remember it being one giant weekend as far as making the thing,” recalls Kilmer in the film’s DVD commentary.

tom cruise photos top gun

16. Hanging out constantly, the lead cast also played basketball, tennis, and went to the driving range.

tom cruise photos top gun

17. In order to keep their onscreen rivalry alive, either Cruise would join the group of partying cast mates or Kilmer would. But the two never hung out together.

tom cruise photos top gun

18. According to Barry Tubb, who played Wolfman, the cast would pile into Kilmer’s van (a vehicle in which Kilmer claimed he lost his virginity). They would use it to “wreak havoc across the Mexican boarder” before racing back for their call time on set.

tom cruise photos top gun

19. Kilmer ad-libbed when he coughed the line “bullshit” in the hangar scene.

tom cruise photos top gun

20. Pilot Art Scholl was killed while performing a stunt during filming. He intentionally dove into a spin to capture it on a camera mounted inside the plane and failed to recover, making impact with the Pacific Ocean.

tom cruise photos top gun

21. Cruise was nervous and stressed, feeling the pressure of carrying the film. “He was as out of his depth as I was,” recalled Scott.

tom cruise photos top gun

22. Edwards and  Ryan , who play husband and wife in the film, also dated in real life.

tom cruise photos top gun

23. Ryan was not Scott’s first choice to play Goose’s wife. The late director was initially reluctant to cast her because she had been a soap opera actress on “As the World Turns.”

tom cruise photos top gun

24. The film originated from an article first published in California Magazine.

tom cruise photos top gun

25. Jack Epps Jr. wrote the movie with Jim Cash, his writing partner on films like “The Secret of My Success” and “Turner & Hooch.” Epps decided “Top Gun” was more of a sports movie than a military film after he went for a real jet ride. “Things happen with such force,” he said of experiencing six Gs of force in midair. “This was one of the greatest athletic things that I’ve ever been involved with in my life.”

tom cruise photos top gun

26. The so called “Top Gun” award for which the pilots in the film compete doesn’t actually exist in the real Navy.

tom cruise photos top gun

27. “We’re paying $1 million for Tom Cruise so we gotta show some flesh,” recalled technical adviser Pete Pettigrew of what filmmakers said regarding the need for a locker room scene.

tom cruise photos top gun

28. Then-Paramount executives, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Michael Eisner , didn’t like the script. The film was sidelined until a new CEO, Ned Tanen, took over and greenlit it during a lunch meeting. He hadn’t even read the screenplay.

tom cruise photos top gun

29. The actors who played pilots got certified and did a training course with the Navy, including riding in an F-14 jet. Rick Rossovich, who plays Slider, earned the nickname “Rock” after he almost sunk like one in a pool during pilot training before filming.

tom cruise photos top gun

30. The Navy reported a 500 percent increase in applicants to its aviation program after the film came out, according to the 2004 book “Operation Hollywood: How the Pentagon Shapes and Censors the Movies.”

If you’ve made it this far, you get the Top Gun award of top Top Gun fans. Reward yourself with this history of the volleyball scene .

Tom Cruise slid into a living room back in the early 1980s and began a pop-culture journey that has soared to an iconic film career.

From those classic movies like “Risky Business,” Cruise has risen to a level of worldwide stardom that few actors—if any—can claim they have achieved.

His fame has been the quintessential Hollywood tale for nearly 40 years, one filled with controversy and marriages, rumors and roars, and a resume that includes some of the biggest hits in the cinematic vault.

The nostalgia mixed with a general infatuation with Cruise is at an all-time high in 2022, as the long-awaited (and delayed) “Top Gun: Maverick” hits theaters over Memorial Day weekend.

The rush of aerial excitement and the actor’s appearances have the camera flashes popping, which is nothing new for the legendary talent.

Just take a look back through his career…

Tom Cruise Shares First Look Photo as ‘Top Gun 2’ Begins Production

Tom Cruise Top Gun 2

Tom Cruise has heralded the start of shooting on Paramount ‘s long-anticipated “ Top Gun ” sequel. Cruise tweeted an image late Wednesday featuring his character, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, looking at a fighter jet down the tarmac.

The teaser image for “Top Gun: Maverick,” which Cruise also posted on his Instagram page, featured the legend “Feel the need,” a reference to the original film’s legendary quote, “I feel the need – the need for speed,” accompanied by the hashtag #Day1.

#Day1 pic.twitter.com/7jjPL277Es — Tom Cruise (@TomCruise) May 31, 2018

Sources confirmed to Variety on Thursday that the sequel had started filming in the U.S.

Although the plot is being kept under wraps, it’s been previously reported that Cruise’s character would now be a flight instructor and that the film would explore a world of drone technology, fifth-generation fighters and the end of the era of dog-fighting. Joseph Kosinski, who is directing the sequel, told ComingSoon.net in October that his approach would be “appropriate for the times we live in.”

“The navy is very different now than it was in 1986,” said Kosinski, who previously worked with Cruise on 2013 sci-fi pic “Oblivion.” “It’s just a different world now, so you can’t remake the first movie. It has to adapt, [but] I certainly want to re-create the experience of that movie, which gives you a front seat into the world of naval aviation and what it’s like to be in a fighter jet.”

Eric Warren Singer, who wrote Kosinski’s 2017 “Only the Brave,” worked on the screenplay alongside Peter Craig (“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay”) and Justin Marks (“The Jungle Book”).

The Paramount Pictures movie is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer for Jerry Bruckheimer Films and David Ellison for Skydance. Cruise also serves as a producer.

No other casting has yet been announced. The original film co-starred Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Tom Skerritt, Anthony Edwards (whose character did not survive) and Meg Ryan.

“Top Gun” grossed $179.8 million domestic and nearly $357 million worldwide on its release in the summer of 1986. It was directed by Tony Scott, who had been working on the sequel with Cruise prior to Scott’s death by suicide in 2012. The original film was produced by Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, who died in 1996.

In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected “Top Gun” for preservation in the National Film Registry as one of the 25 films named annually that are “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is scheduled for release on July 12, 2019.

Tom Cruise Feels the Need for Speed in First ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Photo

Tom Cruise Top Gun

He’s feeling the need for speed! Tom Cruise has officially shared the first photo from his upcoming film Top Gun: Maverick .

The actor, 55, who just joined Instagram in January, quietly posted the pic on his personal account on Thursday, May 31. “#Day1,” he wrote.

Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is ready to jet off in the promotional teaser. Geared up, he looks out into the distance as he holds his helmet and wears his uniform and trademark aviator sunglasses. “Feel the need,” the pic reads.

After much speculation (and hoping!) Cruise confirmed in May 2017 that a Top Gun sequel was in the works. “It’s not going to be called Top Gun 2,” the actor told Access Hollywood that June. “I didn’t want a number. You don’t need a number.”

Skydance CEO David Ellison even teased the possible story line two years prior. “It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today are all fun things that we’re gonna get to dive into in this movie,” he told Collider in 2015. “There’s gonna be jets, very fast jets. There’s gonna be an aircraft carrier, maybe two – and a wide range of jets. [There] may be a volleyball scene.”

Tom Cruise shares first photo from "Top Gun" sequel

By Andrea Park

June 1, 2018 / 1:10 PM EDT / CBS News

Tom Cruise shared the first photo from the long-awaited "Top Gun" sequel. The actor announced with a photo that the film is now officially in production. The photo had a line from the original movie emblazoned on it -- "Feel the need" -- as Cruise's character, Maverick, watches a plane in the distance. He captioned the photo, "#Day1."

It's been 32 years since the first "Top Gun," which was released in 1986. The first film follows Maverick as he navigates elite fighter pilot training, becoming friends with Goose and trying to romance his instructor, Charlotte.

"Feel the need" refers to a famous scene from the first film when Maverick and Goose are preparing for take-off and Maverick says, "I feel the need -- " and the two, in unison, say, "The need for speed" before high-fiving.

  • Tom Cruise reveals name of "Mission Impossible" movie on new Instagram account

In 2017, producer Jerry Brukcheimer talked about the possibility of a "Top Gun" sequel.

"Listen, it's an iconic character that [Cruise] helped create, so I think we would like to see what happened to Maverick for the last 30 years,"   he told Entertainment Tonight .

  • Tom Cruise addresses "Valkyrie" fake butt rumors

Last year, Cruise  talked about the sequel's name .

"It's not going to be called 'Top Gun 2,' it's going to be called 'Top Gun: Maverick,'" Cruise revealed. "I didn't want a number. You don't want a number. You don't need a number."

"We're going to have the same tone that we had for the first one. Stylistically, it's going to be the same," he added. "It's going to be a competition film like the first one, and it's going to be in the same vein, the same tone as the first one. So a progression for Maverick."

"Top Gun: Maverick" is set for release in 2019.

Prince William and Kate Middleton got all dressed up to welcome the stars of Top Gun: Maverick to London's Leicester Square on May 19

In London on Thursday night, May 19, Prince William and Kate Middleton helped welcome Tom Cruise and his castmates to the U.K. premiere of Top Gun: Maverick in Leicester Square.

The royals went glam for the evening, with William in a navy tux (and loafers embroidered with F-18 planes!) and Kate in an off-the-shoulder gown by Roland Mouret

Cruise graciously helped Kate up the steps and into the theater.

Outside the venue, William and Kate met more of the film's stars, including Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly.

The duchess chatted with the actors; she previously met Cruise at the 2021 Euro final in London, according to the Express .

Cruise was fresh off the Top Gun: Maverick premiere in France at the Cannes Film Festival, where he received an extended standing ovation.

Kate also caught up with Top Gun: Maverick star Jon Hamm.

On the way down the theater steps, Cruise and William were deep in conversation.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer was also on hand for the big premiere.

The cast took five for a group photo in front of a plane brought to the red carpet for the starry occasion.

Tom Cruise Had A 4-Word Response When He Saw The Story For Top Gun 3. So, What's Next?

Short but effective!

Top Gun : Maverick was a monster success in 2022. The Tom Cruise-led blockbuster did record breaking numbers at the box office, and the action film even landed a Best Picture nomination that year. It was a hit with audiences as well, and everyone seemed to love the sequel to the 1986 Tony Scott film. Plans for a Top Gun 3 seemed inevitable, and recent reports suggest that Paramount is moving forward officially with a Top Gun threequel . Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently opened up about the film, revealing Cruise’s reaction to hearing the story idea for the film.

The legendary film producer recently spoke to ScreenRant about the studio’s plans for Top Gun 3 , and how development on the film is progressing. The good news is that plans seem to be actively in motion, with Maverick director Joe Kosinski attached to direct again. As for Cruise’s response to hearing about the story plans for Top Gun 3 , according to Bruckheimer, he said:

I really like that.

This is admittedly a very short response, and not much to go off of. But when it comes to making a Top Gun film, Cruise’s approval is everything. It took over 30 years to get Top Gun: Maverick off the ground because the Jerry Maguire star didn’t want to proceed until the script was just right. Cruise is also a major producer on the Top Gun films, so his opinion is incredibly important for the future of the franchise. Getting him to sign off on at least the story pitch is a really great sign for a script to finally be put together. Even with this good news, it still may be a while before we see Top Gun 3 on the big screen. Bruckheimer said of the film:

It will be Tom Cruise [leading the cast]. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and [Tom] said, ‘I really like that,’ so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing ‘Mission: Impossible’ right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.

Bruckheimer is right to say that Mission: Impossible is a massive commitment for Cruise, especially in the most recent years. Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part 1 faced a number of delays due to a complex COVID production. Additionally, Mission: Impossible 8 had to stop filming due to the 2023 Actors and Writers strikes. As a result M:I 8 has also been delayed to 2025 . In general, the Mission films are complicated productions with their complex action sequences, and logistics involved. With such an undertaking, Cruise pursuing a Top Gun 3 in tandem with M:I responsibilities feels almost, well, mission impossible .

However, this is great news regardless. With the main team behind Maverick back to work on Top Gun 3 , and a strong Cruise-approved story in the works, Paramount seems to have all the tools for another hit on their hands. Glen Powell has expressed interest in returning to Top Gun when duty calls, and it seems like the other cast members are down for another high-flying adventure . Even if fans do have to wait for Cruise’s schedule to clear up, if Top Gun: Maverick was any indication, Top Gun 3 will be well worth the wait.

While fans wait for Top Gun 3 to eventually hit the big screen, they can revisit Tom Cruise ’s adrenaline pumping performances in 1986’s Top Gun and 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick , which are both now streaming for Paramount+ subscribers . Racing superstar Lewis Hamilton is making the jump into Hollywood by producing Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming Formula 1 movie that stars Brad Pitt. But if it weren’t for a scheduling conflict with his racing career, he also could have teamed up with Kosinski on his last big blockbuster.

In a new interview with GQ , Hamilton recalled befriending Tom Cruise and lobbying the action star to cast him in a hypothetical “Top Gun” sequel years before Kosinski’s “Top Gun: Maverick” materialized.

“I will even be a janitor,” Hamilton said to Cruise when they would discuss the prospect of a second “Top Gun” movie. “Just let me be in it.”

“Firstly, I hadn’t even had, like, an acting lesson,” he said. “And I don’t want to be the one that lets this movie down. And then secondly, I just really didn’t have the time to dedicate to it. I remember having to tell Joe and Tom — and it broke my heart. And then I regretted it, naturally, when they show me the movie and it’s: It could’ve been me!”

Hamilton didn’t make the same mistake twice and signed on to work with Kosinski on the untitled Formula 1 movie. As an executive producer, he said that he focuses on making sure that the film is an accurate representation of life in the racing league so that it appeals to fans of all stripes.

“My point was: Guys, this movie needs to be so authentic. There’s two different fan groups that we have — like, the old originals, who from the day they’re born hearing the Grand Prix music every weekend and watching with their families, to the new generation that just learned about it today through Netflix ,” he said. “I felt my job really has been to try to call BS. ‘This would never happen.’ ‘This is how it would be.’ ‘This is how it could happen.’ Just giving them advice about what racing is really about and what, as a racing fan, would appeal and what would not.”

Top gun 3 update debunks maverick replacement theory (& it's a good thing).

After the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, Jerry Bruckheimer's recent Top Gun 3 updates are a good sign for the action movie franchise's future.

  • Top Gun 3 is in development with exciting possibilities for the franchise's future.
  • Tom Cruise's return as Maverick ensures the upcoming sequel's success.
  • While Cruise may eventually leave, characters like Rooster and Hangman could carry the franchise forward.

After the critical and commercial success of Top Gun: Maverick , updates regarding Top Gun 3 bode well for the high-octane action franchise's future. With Top Gun 3 in development , there are a lot of possibilities regarding where the upcoming installment will take the Top Gun franchise. Furthermore, breaking Top Gun: Maverick 's box-office records will be an arduous task, since the consensus is that it's one of the greatest action movies ever made. While anything is possible regarding Top Gun 3 's story, the return of one actor in particular ensures that the upcoming sequel will be another success.

Notable for the intense action scenes and incredible dynamics between Tom Cruise's Pete Maverick and Top Gun: Maverick 's newcomers, Top Gun: Maverick proved that the classic 1980s action movie's appeal is just as strong, if not stronger, today as it was during the original Top Gun . Even though the sheer number of planes that could appear in Top Gun 3 is exciting, seeing some of the franchise's well-established characters once again take to the skies would be even more fun. With producer Jerry Bruckheimer's recent updates, audiences anticipating Top Gun 3 are already in for a massive surprise .

Top Gun 3 Has The Perfect Opportunity To Fix An Issue With The Original Movie's Most Interesting Dynamic

Tom cruise's maverick won't be replaced by rooster or hangman in top gun 3, without cruise in the lead, top gun loses what is arguably its greatest asset..

Although Miles Teller's Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw and Glen Powell's Jake "Hangman" Seresin were great additions to the Top Gun franchise, neither character will be replacing Cruise's Maverick as the protagonist of Top Gun 3 . Jerry Bruckheimer's Top Gun 3 updates confirm that Cruise will once again lead the action in the upcoming sequel, even if the story is still under development. As demonstrated by the impressive box-office returns and critical acclaim of Top Gun: Maverick , it seems as though Bruckheimer is acutely aware of what makes the franchise so good.

Cruise's return to the Top Gun franchise highlights his importance to its success.

Although releasing Top Gun: Maverick nearly four decades after the original was a huge financial risk, it proved to be a massive success, as audiences were just as eager to see Cruise's Maverick in action in 2022 as they were in 1986. Had Top Gun: Maverick happened with another actor in the lead, the movie wouldn't have become the critical and commercial success that it is today. While the newer characters, such as Rooster and Hangman, are respectable and likable in their own ways, Cruise's return to the Top Gun franchise highlights his importance to its success .

Why It's Good Tom Cruise's Maverick Will Still Be The Star Of Top Gun 3

Pete maverick's arc is still incomplete, and cruise is the reason why audiences see top gun..

Tom Cruise's stunt work is one of the biggest reasons to see any movie that he's in, as he's cultivated a strong reputation for ensuring the stunts are as real and engaging as possible. As such, any action movie that Cruise stars in guarantees the A-list actor will perform yet another death-defying feat for the entertainment of audiences worldwide. In addition to his commitment to his work, Cruise possesses an undeniable charisma that draws audiences into his work , and the critical and commercial success of both Top Gun movies and the Mission: Impossible franchise reinforces Cruise's star power.

Despite Top Gun: Maverick 's success, Cruise might eventually leave the franchise.

Additionally, Top Gun: Maverick demonstrated that, despite Maverick's age and reputation among his colleagues, he's still just as brash and immature today as he was in his youth . While his relationship with Penny helps him come to terms with his immaturity, he's largely still the same even by the end of the movie. After the tenuous nature of his relationship with the new characters softens over time, audiences see that Maverick has the aptitude to humble himself and become the great leader that he truly is. However, despite Top Gun: Maverick 's success, Cruise might eventually leave the franchise.

Tom Cruise May Eventually Have To Be Replaced In Top Gun's Future

Cruise might eventually get replaced if future installments continue to be made..

Cruise's return to Top Gun: Maverick made sense because, despite being in his 60s, Cruise is proving time and again that he's still in the perfect condition to realistically meet the demands of his more intense work . Furthermore, Top Gun: Maverick was a legacy sequel, as evidenced by his character's name appearing in the title, so it would have been confusing if he weren't in it. However, assuming Bruckheimer has plans to release as many Top Gun movies as possible, it would stand to reason that the franchise would eventually pass the torch to the next generation of actors.

With well-received characters like Rooster and Hangman in the perfect position to essentially replace Anthony Edwards's Goose and Cruise's Maverick respectively, there's plenty of franchise potential with those two characters alone. Furthermore, the lesser-known members of Top Gun: Maverick could also receive more recognition in future sequels or even spin-offs. While general audiences love Cruise's commitment to his projects, there's only so much that he can realistically do regarding the stunts . However, with Top Gun 3 still in development, there are plenty of avenues for Bruckheimer and Cruise to consider.

'It Broke My Heart': F1 Racer Regrets Turning Down Top Gun: Maverick Role

Lewis Hamilton had a chance to be a part of one of the biggest blockbuster films of all time, but he turned down a possible role in Top Gun: Maverick when it was offered. Looking back, the racing superstar is admitting that it was a big mistake not to get involved.

While speaking with GQ , Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton addressed his friendship with Tom Cruise along with his near-casting in Top Gun: Maverick . The story goes back to before Maverick was even in the works, as Hamilton has long been a Top Gun fan. After the two became friends when Cruise invited Hamilton to the set of the 2014 film Edge of Tomorrow , Cruise kept in touch, sometimes sending messages of support for Hamilton's races. At one point, Hamilton said he wanted to get a role in a potential Top Gun sequel if one were to ever get made.

How Goose Died in Top Gun

“I said, ‘Dude, if you ever do Top Gun 2 …’—which had not been spoken of, there was no story yet—‘I will even be a janitor—just let me be in it ,'" Hamilton explained.

It's not quite clear when exactly this comment was made, but some time afterward, Top Gun: Maverick was greenlit and put into production. Cruise remembered Hamilton's request and sought to make it a reality by putting the Formula One driver in contact with the movie's director, Joseph Kosinski. That led to Hamilton getting offered a role as a pilot in the film, but the timing couldn't have been much worse, putting the driver into a predicament.

Top Gun: Maverick Star Reveals the Production's Creative Solution to Bathroom Breaks

Lewis hamilton wasn't confident about his abilities.

At the time, Hamilton was in the midst of the 2018 title race. To accept the Maverick role, he would've had to take a couple of weeks off of the final months of the racing season. On top of that, Hamilton was concerned about his lack of experience as a professional actor. While he describes the decision to pass on the project as heartbreaking, he ultimately did so, worried he'd be the one to wreck the project. Looking back, Hamilton regrets the decision.

“Firstly, I hadn’t even had, like, an acting lesson ,” Hamilton said of when he got the offer. “And I don’t want to be the one that lets this movie down. And then secondly, I just really didn’t have the time to dedicate to it. I remember having to tell Joe and Tom—and it broke my heart . And then I regretted it, naturally, when they show me the movie and it’s: It could’ve been me! Oh, God, I’m still….”

It's easy to see why it stings for Hamilton to have missed out. Maverick went on to earn nearly $1.5 billion at the global box office, serving as the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise's career. It was also nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars and garnered widespread acclaim, drawing very high scores from critics and audiences alike. However, there is a third film in development , so maybe Hamilton will get another shot at joining the franchise.

Top Gun: Maverick is streaming on Prime Video and Paramount+.

L ewis Hamilton and Tom Cruise have been friends since 2015 after they became close after they both share an unwavering passion for high-octane experiences .

Tom Cruise has made a name for himself in Hollywood as a fearless actor, and proof of this has been how he does his stunts no matter how dangerous they are, something that impressed Hamilton who was interviewed by GQ and spoke about his relationship with Tom.

Tom Cruise and Lewis Hamilton are good friends

The legendary F1 driver spoke openly about how he regretted not being able to star in the Top Gun sequel after he insisted to Tom that he'd be willing to take on the part of the custodian if it meant he would be in the movie.

" I said, 'Dude, if you ever do Top Gun 2.. .'-which was not near its conception-'I will even be a janitor-just let me be in it,'" said Hamilton of his encounter with Cruise .

They both became good friends and Cruise even invited Hamilton to the set of his sci-fi action movie with Emily Blunt "The Edge of Tomorrow" back in 2014.

" My assistant called me: 'Tom Cruise has invited you to the set.' I was just like: 'Shoot, yeah?! Cancel anything, I have ,'" Hamilton mentioned.

Tom Cruise took Hamilton's word and offered him a part in the sequel to the legendary fighter plane movie, however, the F1 races were happening during the filming and Lewis could not take the time off to be on set with a tight filming schedule.

"Firstly, I hadn't even had, like, an acting lesson," he said. "And I don't want to be the one that lets this movie down. And then secondly, I just really didn't have the time to dedicate to it."

"it broke my heart to turn down the role" , Hamilton elaborated " And then I regretted it, naturally, when they show me the movie and it's: 'It could've been me!'"

Danny Ramirez who took the part after Hamilton said no thanked the racer via X for canceling his appearance in the movie " When Joe Kosinski introduced us and said that Lewis' role was gonna be Fanboy, I thanked him for saying no haha. Appreciate the assist @LewisHamilton ,".
