Complete Guide to Cruising from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach

While they would never be mistaken with the world’s most popular cruise ports like Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles and Long Beach are still heavily trafficked cruise ports.

Hundreds of thousands of passengers each year sail from the Port of Los Angeles and the Long Beach Cruise Terminal.

Today, you can have your choice of cruise lines in the area, from Carnival to Princess to Norwegian to Royal Caribbean. Meanwhile, itineraries have expanded beyond simply the well-known Mexican Riviera trips to include coastal California cruises, trips through the Panama Canal, and even cruises to Hawaii and Canada.

Los Angeles & Long Beach Cruise Port Locations

Both ports are located just a few miles of each other, with one in San Pedro and the other in Long Beach.

If you’re unfamiliar with the area, these cities are both part of the greater Los Angeles area and are about 20 miles south of downtown LA. If flying in for your cruise, expect the trip from Los Angeles International (LAX) to take at least 30 minutes and possibly more due to traffic.

Which port you cruise from will depend on which cruise line you sail. To help you find your way, we’ve covered each port in detail below.

Sailing From the World Cruise Center (Port of Los Angeles)

The Port of Los Angeles is the busier of the two ports. A number of lines, including Princess, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity depart from the port. 

The port features three berths (91-93). Expect it to take about 30 minutes to an hour to get to the port from the Los Angeles International Airport. 

Getting to the Port of Los Angeles (World Cruise Center)

Southern California is known for its car culture. It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that the most convenient way to get to the cruise ship is to drive (if you’re in the area and have a car) or take an Uber/Lyft. These services provide access from all major airports in the area. And you can be picked up anywhere else in the area to get to the ship on your own schedule.

Expect the ride to cost at least $50 for a car from LAX to the cruise port. Higher rates will apply if going a longer distance or during peak times.

• Los Angeles International (LAX): 30 min
• Long Beach Airport (LBG): 25 min
• John Wayne Airport (SNA): 45 min
• Downtown: 40 min

Parking at World Cruise Center

Of course, if you live in the area — as millions do — then you may be interested in simply driving and parking at the port. 

The good news is that there is ample parking right at the port. You can park practically at the terminal and walk right in. While the convenience is nice, it does come at a cost. Rates are $20 per day for most vehicles. So over the course of a weeklong cruise, you can expect to spend $140.

Want to park cheaper? If you are traveling from farther away and plan to stay at a hotel in the area, then look for a hotel with a park and cruise package. With these deals you can get your hotel and have parking (and often a shuttle) included.

Due to the location of the port, there aren’t any independent parking lots nearby that we know of.

Where to Stay for a Los Angeles Cruise

Flying into Los Angeles for a cruise? It’s always a good idea to plan to arrive into the city the day before. That way if there are any delays, you aren’t scrambling to make it to the port — or have any worry about missing the ship.

So where should you stay? The area around the port (San Pedro) offers a number of hotels within just 1-3 miles of the ships. This includes some right on the waterfront and some that offer a shuttle service to get guests to the cruise terminal.

Sailing From the Long Beach Cruise Terminal

Los Angeles — while far from being the biggest cruise departure port in the country — offers two different cruise ports. The Long Beach terminal is a short distance from the Port of Los Angeles (about 15 minutes via car). It serves Carnival Cruise Lines, which primarily sails shorter trips to the Mexican Riviera.

The terminal here is one of the most unique in the country as it is a large dome. It used to house the famous Spruce Goose and also served as a soundstage for Hollywood movies. Today, it holds passengers as they prepare to board the ship.

Visitors will also recognize the historic Queen Mary, which is docked permanently at the port. As with the Port of Los Angeles, expect it to take about 30-45 minutes to get to the cruise port from the LAX airport, depending on traffic. If flying in, Long Beach Airport is much closer, reducing travel time.

Getting to the Long Beach Cruise Port

As with the World Cruise Center in San Pedro, your best bet for getting to the port if you need transportation is with an Uber or Lyft. These services are widely available, including offering rides from the major airports.

Prices will vary depending on where you are coming from. For reference, you can expect to spend around $60 for a ride from Los Angeles International to the Long Beach cruise port. Prices will vary based on traffic.

Here are some estimated commute times from certain points:

• Los Angeles International (LAX): 30-40 min
• Long Beach Airport (LBG): 15 min
• John Wayne Airport (SNA): 35 min
• Downtown: 45 min

Parking at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal

For many people, they don’t have to worry about a ride to the port. Roughly 20 million people live in the greater Los Angeles area that includes Long Beach. That means many people are able to simply drive to the cruise ship.

Of course, if you are driving, then you will need a spot to park. The port offers ample parking in a garage that’s right next to the terminal. However, that convenience comes at a cost. The port charges $23 per day for parking. Over the course of a weeklong cruise, expect to spend upwards of $160.

There are also hotels in the area that offer cruise parking for guests. Stay a night and you can leave your car while you sail — for a reduced cost versus parking at the port. If you plan on staying in a hotel the night before your cruise, this deal can save you a nice chunk of change.

Where to Stay for a Long Beach Cruise

Flying into the area before your cruise? Or maybe you want to be able to relax before you sail, instead of having to drive to the cruise ship on the morning of your trip? No matter the reason, Long Beach offers a number of hotels that are within just a short distance of the terminal.

As well, the terminal is right across from the city of Long Beach itself. That provides a lot to do right near the ship. For example, you can stay the night before, visit the Aquarium of the Pacific or The Pike (an outdoor shopping mall with restaurants and entertainment options), or even spend some time on the beach.

Busted: 8 myths about the Royal Caribbean world cruise

On Dec. 10, 2023, Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas departed on the Ultimate World Cruise, the line's first-ever around-the-world sailing – a 274-night voyage that's set to call on 60 countries. Because the sailing is one of the longest cruises in the industry's history, it's understandable that people who aren't regular cruisers might be curious, particularly if they didn't know voyages like this one were a thing.

What I can't understand, though, are the complaints, the worry and the manufactured drama that have, so far, stemmed from the sailing. From wide-eyed reports of — gasp — being charged for bottled water to allegations of cliques forming among passengers, the world cruise has people talking.

Social media is largely to blame, with new-to-cruise influencers posting TikTok content about things that are new to them but not necessarily new in the world of cruising. That, in turn, has led to other non-cruisers' viral obsession with content that's coming from the vessel on a daily basis.

Here, I'll tackle some of the complaints and debunk a few cruise myths about this sailing.

World cruises are a new concept

No, they aren't. When influencers began posting about the Ultimate World Cruise on social media, people lost their minds over the idea of nine months at sea. Although this is Royal Caribbean 's first-ever world cruise, long sailings that cover much of the globe have been happening for more than 100 years.

Several lines offer them annually, and they often sell out. They last for months at a time, visit dozens of locations and cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. (It's rumored that the most expensive suite for Royal Caribbean's full nine-month trip cost the occupants more than $700,000.)

I should also mention that it's common for crew members' contracts to last up to nine months, so that much time at sea is fairly routine for people on ships, even if they aren't there for vacation.

You have to book the entire voyage

You don't. As the cast of characters slowly takes shape through TikTok posts, there has already been at least one claim of a passenger departing the cruise early , as though this is some kind of reality show.

There are many reasons — including emergencies and bad behavior — why someone might leave the sailing prematurely. However, it's likely many early departures that will happen on this voyage were planned that way.

That's because cruisers are able to book just a portion of the world sailing, choosing from four segments of up to 60 days each or any of 17 shorter individual sailings that range from nine to 28 days.

There's a caste system on board

Some of the recent posts make it seem as though there's a Titanic-esque system in place that prevents people in the least expensive cabins from using the same facilities as the rest of the general ship population. That's not true.

The preferential treatment everyone seems to be complaining about is called loyalty status, and we know a thing or two about that here at TPG.

The more loyal you are to the brand (in the case of Royal Caribbean's Crown and Anchor Society , the more nights you've sailed with the line), the more perks you receive. They might include small things like priority boarding, the use of a dedicated onboard lounge, free Wi-Fi or laundry, and a welcome cocktail reception when the sailing begins.

It's similar to obtaining airline lounge access, early check-in at hotels or line-skipping privileges at Disney World. Any time you've paid for something, even in a roundabout way through loyalty, there are privileges. But, in the end, everyone on the vessel has access to the same general bars and lounges, spa and fitness facilities, entertainment options, restaurants, pools and outdoor decks.

Plus, by the end of the voyage, everyone who was there for the full nine months should have reached at least Diamond Plus, the second-highest status, due to the length of the sailing.

Generally, the perks for being booked in a suite are more exclusive than they are for having high loyalty status. Although it's not available on Serenade of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's dedicated suite enclave, the Suite Neighborhood (found on Oasis Class and Icon Class vessels), offers special dining rooms, lounges, sun decks and concierge services for passengers booked in the most expensive cabins.

Drinks are free

I'll forgive you for not knowing this if you've never cruised before. Big-ship cruise lines like Royal Caribbean are not all-inclusive like resorts. While your base fare includes your cabin, meals in multiple restaurants, use of onboard facilities and entertainment, it does not cover alcoholic beverages, specialty coffee, soda or bottled water .

Cruise lines don't hide the fact that most drinks aren't included. You have only yourself to blame if you didn't do your homework before boarding.

With Royal Caribbean, you can order and pay for drinks a la carte or purchase a soda or alcohol package for a per-day cost for the entire length of the voyage.

Free drinks generally include iced tea, lemonade, drip coffee, tea and tap water. The tap water is purified and safe to drink, so if you're someone who needs a bottle of water, bring a reusable one with you.

The ship is running out of supplies

Contrary to what certain recent posts about wine list changes might have you believe, the ship will not run out of food and drinks. Sure, some items might be crossed out on menus if they're unavailable, but that's not unusual when traveling. It doesn't mean food or drinks are running low in general. It just means the particular item you like might not be available.

The folks who handle cruise provisioning have it down to a science. They know exactly how much of everything — from eggs to toilet paper — a ship will need for a given period of time. They also know when and in which ports they'll need to restock. However, that doesn't mean all brands can be procured in all places when they do so.

It's entirely possible that your favorite food, wine or brand of spirits won't be available, but it's not a reason to worry. The line will find something to substitute for it whenever possible. I assure you that you won't run out of options for eating or drinking, even on a nine-month voyage.

Cruise ships never break

Like any other machine, cruise ships require and receive regular maintenance because sometimes mechanical issues arise. These can range from engine room issues to more minor problems like clogged toilets or balcony doors that stick when you open them.

Every few years, each vessel goes in for extensive work. This includes both aesthetic improvements like replacing carpeting and mechanical maintenance on engines and other parts essential for the ship's safe operation.

In between, vessels receive regular tune-ups from an entire team of onboard engineers and maintenance employees; they work below deck to ensure everything runs smoothly and to fix problems when something goes wrong.

In early January, reports of an onboard leak ... well, leaked. Serenade of the Seas sailed through a storm, and some of the rainwater made its way into the onboard fitness center. Ships are constantly surrounded by water, and rough weather can bring all sorts of unexpected outcomes. Fortunately, the crew is trained to quickly and efficiently handle these types of messes if they happen, and the bridge — the captain's control center — is equipped to detect storm systems that are truly dangerous and alter course to sail around them.

Cruise itineraries don't change

Speaking of storms, earlier this week, Serenade of the Seas had to alter its course a bit on the way to Antarctica to avoid rough seas, which are typical in that region — especially this time of year. Many internet users were shocked about the change in itinerary, but if you follow the cruise industry, you know that itinerary changes and port substitutions happen all the time.

Ultimately, the captain's top concern is safety, which means the ship will divert wherever necessary in order to keep the vessel, passengers and crew out of harm's way.

Cruise ships can switch up their itineraries for a number of reasons, including medical emergencies, unrest in planned ports of call, mechanical issues or, most commonly, weather conditions.

When this happens on a voyage that's already underway, cruise lines will usually refund port taxes and fees for any ports missed, as well as shore excursions purchased through the cruise line. However, per the terms and conditions that every passenger agrees to in order to sail, cruisers are not entitled to additional compensation in these cases.

You'll get sick on the ship

It's possible but unlikely. One influencer — who freely admits she's never cruised but did live in a dorm room once — created a bingo card for the sailing . It lists several ridiculous scenarios like "stowaways," "pirate attacks," "COVID outbreak," "2nd COVID outbreak" and "mass norovirus."

The reality is that cruise ships have always had some of the most stringent health protocols anywhere, thanks to requirements put forth by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the 1970s as part of the ongoing Vessel Sanitation Program .

In 2019, 30 million passengers took a cruise, but only 1,201 cases of gastrointestinal illnesses were reported to the CDC . It seems like a lot, but it's actually just 0.004% (four one-thousandths of 1%). While it's still possible to get sick on a ship, as it is anywhere, the difference is that cruise lines are well-versed in prevention and prepared if illness occurs.

Bottom line

There's lots of misinformation stemming from the social media reporting on Royal Caribbean's nine-month Ultimate World Cruise, and most of the drama is coming from people who are new to cruising.

Cruises hold a lot of surprises — some delightful and some frustrating — for newbies. However, just because something is new to you doesn't mean it's news.

With that in mind, I'm happy cruising is receiving more attention from a new generation that might not be as familiar with it. Perhaps these online world cruise chronicles will convince someone who hasn't sailed before to give it a try. Either way, it's important to get the facts right if you're going to share information or commentary.

Royal Caribbean's Silversea shares its take on a world cruise

R oyal Caribbean's 9-month Ultimate World Cruise just ended with Serenade of the Seas returning to Miami on Sept. 10. The cruise made headlines, mostly for good reasons, but there was a lot of drama onboard for the roughly 800 passengers who stayed on the entire voyage, not just segments of it.

There were multiple people on the ship who consider themselves influencers and seemingly no aspect of the trip managed to stay off social media. There was a death, itinerary changes, some marital discord, and all sorts of drama.

That was to be expected when you put people in close quarters for that long coupled with unlimited alcohol. The Ultimate World Cruise moved from Florida through South America, Antarctica, China, Madagascar, and about 60 total countries.

Royal Caribbean executives have promised a second Ultimate World Cruise, but it has not set a date and CEO Michael Bayley did point out the logistical challenge a cruise of this scale entails.

Another Royal Caribbean brand, Silversea, will be offering its own world cruise and it can be booked now.

Silversea focuses on World Heritage sites

While Serenade of the Seas is a small ship by Royal Caribbean standards, it's still large enough to be limited to where it can dock and sail. It Can carry about 2,400 passengers while Silverseas's Silver Dawn, which will be used to the world cruise, has a capacity of 596.

The cruise line shared details of its take on a world cruise.

"Silversea, the leading ultra-luxury and expedition cruise travel brand, has opened general sales on its World Cruise 2027, The Three Oceans. Set to call in 80 destinations – more destinations than any voyage in the company’s history – the 149-day sailing will connect 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 35 countries," Silversea posted on its website.

The cruise line's destinations team will also be working on unique experiences for the cruisers.

"Additional opportunities to meaningfully connect with the local culture will abound, with exclusive events crafted by Silversea’s destination experts, dozens of S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) culinary experiences, various seasonal enrichments, and much more," it added

Silver Dawn will depart Los Angeles on January 8 and arrive in Copenhagen on June 7, 2027, "unlocking the unique cultures, histories, and ideas of the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans for guests," the cruise line shared.

The cruise will also visit 20 new destinations that Silversea has never called on before.

Does size really matter?

We’re talking, of course, about the world’s largest cruise ships. For some travelers, bigger automatically means better. But if you’re going to shell out your hard-earned dollars for a vacation on one of the top lines, it’s important to research if the experience is a good fit for you.

What is the biggest cruise ship?

The Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is the biggest cruise ship in the world. The nearly 1,200-foot ship set sail in January 2024 and accommodates 5,610 guests and 2,350 crew members, according to Royal Caribbean. 

According to the DNV, the leading maritime register, the Icon of the Seas has a gross tonnage of 248,663 . Gross tonnage measures a ship’s total volume. 

Icon of the Seas’ maiden voyage was so highly anticipated that it nearly sold out in just a few hours, Business Insider reported. Some cruise-goers even paid $75,000 a week to stay in an exclusive three-story townhouse complete with private balconies, a whirlpool, a backyard and slides.

What is the biggest ship ever built?

The Icon of the Seas might be the biggest cruise ship to set sail, but it’s not the largest boat in the history of maritime travel. The Seawise Giant, also known as the Knock Nevis, was the biggest ship ever built at 564,739 tons, according to The New York Times. 

The oil tanker was built in the 1970s but caught fire and sank in 1988 after Iraqi planes bombed an offshore terminal. A Norwegian company rescued it a year later from shallow waters and repaired it. The Seawise Giant continued transporting oil until its final journey concluded in December 2009.

How big was the Titanic?

The Titanic was about 883 feet long and had a gross tonnage of 46,329 tons – it’s sizable, but much smaller than the world’s biggest ship; the Icon of the Seas which is 1,200 feet long and has a gross tonnage of 248,663.

There were over 2,200 passengers on the Titanic – more than 1,500 of them died in the 1912 sinking.

Another Icon-of-the-Seas-Style Megaship? Make That 3 More.

Royal Caribbean and other companies are aggressively building over-the-top ships. “Today’s cruisezillas make the Titanic look like a small fishing boat,” noted one sustainability specialist.

The Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, drew as much criticism as excitement when Royal Caribbean launched it earlier this year, but the ship has been a hit among cruise goers. Now the cruise line is adding to its fleet of megaships.

The company already has two Icon Class ships on order — Star of the Seas, which will be launched in 2025, and a third ship that has not yet been named but will be delivered in 2026. It now has plans to order a fourth ship, set for a 2027 launch, with options for a fifth and sixth. The new ships build on the market response to Icon of the Seas, said Jason Liberty, president and chief executive of Royal Caribbean Group, announcing the agreement to build the new ships.

“Since its debut, Icon has exceeded our expectations in both guest satisfaction and financial performance,” Mr. Liberty said in a statement on Tuesday.

The 250,800-ton ship, which can carry nearly 8,000 people, has eight “neighborhoods” packed with amenities that include a 55-foot waterfall, six water slides and more than 40 restaurants, bars and entertainment venues.

Royal Caribbean’s announcement comes as the cruise industry reports record demand, attracting new customers with attractively priced packages that often include food, beverages and activities. In 2023, cruise travel exceeded 2019’s 29.7 million passengers by some two million, with 31.7 million passengers. This year, that number is expected to reach 34.7 million, according to Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s trade group.

Responding to the demand, Royal Caribbean launched four new ships this year and has seven more on order. Other major cruise lines, like Carnival, Norwegian and MSC, are also launching next-generation vessels through 2027. The trend has drawn criticism from environmental groups, who warn that the number and scale of the ships undermine the industry’s commitment to a more sustainable future.

The world’s largest cruise ships are now twice as big as they were in 2000, according to a report by Transport and Environment , a Brussels-based advocacy group for clean transport and energy. If vessels continue to grow at their current rate, the biggest ships in 2050 will be eight times larger than the Titanic, with a capacity to carry nearly 11,000 passengers, the report found.

“Today’s cruisezillas make the Titanic look like a small fishing boat. How much bigger can these giants get?” said Inesa Ulichina, the sustainable shipping officer at Transport and Environment. “The cruise business is the fastest growing tourism sector and its emissions are quickly getting out of control.”

Based on the current fleets of its member lines, CLIA said, there is a strong balance of cruise ship sizes. Many cruise lines argue that their larger vessels are being built more efficiently in line with their sustainability goals, with features to make them compatible with cleaner fuel sources like methanol.

The Icon of the Seas has several features designed to minimize the ship’s carbon footprint, including a waste management system that converts onboard waste into energy and an advanced purification system that is designed to treat all wastewater onboard.

“Achieving net zero is not something any one company can do alone,” Mr. Liberty said, speaking last month at a Decarbonization Summit hosted by Royal Caribbean Group and the not-for-profit Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. “It requires collective problem solving, creative thinking, and a willingness to have tough conversations.”

The evening ceremony also marked the start of a new chapter for Wonder as it makes waves as Port Canaveral’s new, year-round family vacation .

Royal Caribbean executives and teams, families, friends, travel advisors, the cruise line’s partners and more came together on board the world’s largest cruise ship to celebrate the occasion in one of the brand’s unparalleled entertainment venues, the AquaTheater. In the time-honored role of Godmother, Marie bestowed a blessing of safekeeping on Wonder , its crew and the millions of families who will make lifelong memories on board in the years to come. Located on the Pacific Coast of the United States, cruise lines operate from the The Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Center in San Pedro , approximately 20 miles south of the LAX Airport and downtown LA area.

Nearest pre and post cruise reasonable priced hotels and affordable motels are situated a few blocks away from the World Cruise Center in San Pedro ca, a quick cab ride or free shuttle from the port and piers. Several San Pedro hotels will shuttle you to the Port of LA the morning of your cruise. Many of them provide free car parking as well.

Alternatively, stay overnight in downtown Long Beach , which is 6 miles away. It’s the busiest cruise port on the West Coast of the United States. Below at berth 84 is the Los Angeles Maritime Museum , located in the former Municipal Ferry Terminal building, exhibiting the once thriving San Pedro fishing industry, displaying large ship models such as the U.S. Navy cruiser Los Angeles, and the Poseidon miniature from the 1972 disaster film. 12-Year-Old Boy Falls to His Death from Balcony of Cruise Ship Heading for Galveston, Texas

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests," Royal Caribbean told PEOPLE in a statement

A 12-year-old boy has died after falling from the balcony of a cruise ship.

The pre-teen was aboard Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas — which was en route to Galveston, Texas at the end of a week-long cruise — when the incident happened on Saturday, Sept. 7.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told PEOPLE in a statement, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests. Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

PEOPLE has confirmed that the boy fell at the ‘Central Park’ area of the ship, located on deck 8, where many of the vessel’s bars, restaurants and shops live. He sadly died before the vessel docked in Texas.

The news comes after a 16-year-old boy also fell to his death on the ship back in 2019.

According to multiple outlets, the teenager fell while attempting to climb into his room from the balcony. 

At the time, Royal Caribbean corporate communications manager, Owen Torres, confirmed the death in a statement to PEOPLE. “We are saddened by the loss of one of our guests in a tragic accident,” the statement read.

The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement at the time that the boy was on the eighth floor of Harmony of the Seas when he attempted to climb into his room because he forgot his room key.

According to a press release from Royal Caribbean, Harmony of the Seas was the world’s largest cruise liner when it launched in 2016. She departed on her maiden voyage in November 2016 from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.  

The vessel has 16 guest decks, 2,747 staterooms and can carry over 5,000 guests.
