Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park : Review

Christmas is now starting to feel like a distant memory but thankfully we’ve still got our fantastic festive days out to look back on. After previously visiting Chester Zoo Lanterns, we were interested to see Knowsley offering a similar experience. Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park seemed to be a smaller version of what Chester Zoo offered and while you don’t walk around carrying lanterns, the light up animals looked really affective. We therefore decided to book tickets to see how the two compared.

Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park Prices

The main selling point of Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park is the relatively low price. We bought the tickets online , and they cost just £7.50 each for both children and adults, with kids under three going free. We opted to pay an additional £7.50 per child so they also got Santa’s grotto included in the price.

What Is The Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park?

The event starts after dark and runs from mid November to just before Christmas. You book your tickets for a specific day and you can enter any time between 4.30pm and 7pm, with the park closing at 8pm. Santa’s grotto is booked for a specific time so you want to organise your entry so you don’t miss your slot.

The Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park consists of an illuminated trail through the foot safari where you can spot brightly lit animals on your way around. As with Chester Zoo, you don’t actually get to see the real animals, just their illuminated recreations.

Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park : Our Experience

We’ve visited Knowsley Safari Park in the Winte r before, but only for the traditional safari. We were therefore excited to see what the evening had in store.

We had pre-booked our Santa’s visit for 6pm, so arrived at Knowsley for 5pm. We were able to park the car easily (free of charge) and made our way to the admissions. We were told we would have enough time to complete the illuminated trail before our allocated time for the grotto so we set off to find our favourite animals.

The animal lanterns were very similar to the ones we saw at Chester Zoo, just on a smaller scale. All our favourites were there, including zebra, tigers, and reindeer.

Enchanted christmas at knowsley safari park - three illuminated tigers

My daughter has an obsession with penguins after watching Mr Popper’s Penguins the week before so she was delighted to spot her favourite animal in all their illuminated glory!

knowsley safari night out

Midway through the trail there was the chance to toast some marshmallows which the children loved. There wasn’t an additional fee like there was at Dunham Massey’s Christmas Lights . There was also room for the kids to sit down and enjoy their treat.

knowsley safari night out

The trail lasted approximately 30 minutes which isn’t as long as the trails at Chester Zoo and Dunham Massey but considering the low price we felt it was still good value for money.

Santa’s Grotto

Despite having pre-booked we still need to join a queue to see Santa at our allotted time. The wait wasn’t overly long though, only around 15 minutes. The waiting area was nicely decorated and festive and the time soon passed.

knowsley safari night out

When at the front of the queue we were greeted by an enthusiastic elf who had the kids giggling. Even our usually surly non-believer, who goes along with it all for his younger siblings, was caught laughing! They then went through to meet the big man himself and told him what they’d like for Christmas. They were each given a gift, all of which were unwrapped so they could actually choose something they wanted. Each gift had an animal theme in keeping with the surroundings.

Food and Rides

After the trail and visiting Santa we head to one of the stalls selling refreshments and sat down for a drink and a warm up next to the heaters. My husband had a rather disgusting hot chocolate (more hot water than hot chocolate), while the kids and I safely enjoyed our soft drinks. There was the opportunity to make hot drinks more festive with a shot of brandy or Baileys for an additional fee.

There were plenty of rides for the kids to enjoy, as there is when you visit during the day time. The prices were the same, £2 per child or £10 for an unlimited wristband. We opted for unlimited wristbands for the kids because we knew they’d only need to go on six rides each to make it worth the money.

There are plenty of rides to make the wristbands worth it and the kids had a great time. We actually stayed ride up until closing time. It was much quieter after 7pm so they were able to just walk on whatever ride they wanted without there being any queue. They probably managed over ten rides each before the park closed. We like to get our money’s worth!

Enchanted Christmas at Knowsley Safari Park : Summary

While Enchanted Christmas At Knowsley Safari Park isn’t on the same scale as Chester Zoo’s Lanterns, we still had a great time. The trail had the majority of the animals we would want to see including zebra, giraffes, tigers, and reindeer.  It’s an event that’s as expensive as you wish it to be. If you simply wanted to do the lights for £7.50 each you could easily do so. It’s just the additions fees of Santa and the rides that can make the evening a more expensive one.

The event was well organised with staff on hand to help, and despite the queue for Santa it all ran smoothly. We would definitely visit again in 2020.

Looks Totally delightful, and one for the to do list for next year for sure.

' src=

I sometimes find the smaller Christmas affairs can be just as good as the big, grand attractions. They are normally less crowded and have a more intimate vibe because of that. I’m glad you enjoyed this and just sorry that they can’t make a decent hot chocolate! C x

' src=

im a massve fan of xmas, and have been to many xmas themed places, but some of these displays are great! i want them in my garden lol! let alone a safari park, but it looks like a great place to visit.

' src=

The light up animals look amazing! But a bit pricey I think, as your not seeing real animals. We have a farm park with loads of animals and costs the same has this.

' src=

I do love festive days out with light displays and this sounds like a great evening out

' src=

I went to something similar to this at Kew gardens a few years back and it was lovely, that’s such a good price as well x

' src=

Oh this looks so good. I love the animals there that light up so pretty.

' src=

Wow this looks like such a magical experience. I can’t believe amazing the animal lanterns look. Would love to take my kids to something like this.

' src=

Aw looks like you all had an amazing family fun adventure for sure. Happy days xx

The 8km-long-track weaves though a variety of enclosures, letting visitors meet creatures such as white rhino, African lions, European bison, Pere David’s deer and two‐humped Bactarian camels amongst many other incredible species!

Your journey will lead you through the Baboon Jungle , where you’ll meet a troop of, you guessed it, baboons! These marvellous monkeys are actually the largest of all monkey species.

They can be quite mischievous , too. However, visitors can choose to brave the Baboon Jungle, or see the baboons without worrying about the car, by either taking the car friendly route around the Baboon Jungle or booking to ride the Baboon Bus .

Enchanted takes place on the Foot Safari route .

Part of the Foot Safari is the Amur Tiger Trail, which lets you peer into the l argest tiger enclosure in Europe . Its residents are two Amur Tiger sisters Bira and Sinda , and a newly introduced male named Kuzma .

Amur tigers were on the brink of extinction in the 1940s , but conservation efforts pulled their numbers up from around 40 individuals to somewhere between 523 and 540 in 2015. Great news! But they are still at risk. Staff at Knowsley Safari hope that introducing Kuzma will encourage Bira to breed . Fingers crossed they’ll be hearing the pitter patter of tiny tiger cub paws soon. That’ll be roar -some!

The tiger project is just one of the many fantastic conservation project s that Knowsley Safari is supporting. Their work is to protect wildlife around the world for future generations.

Enchanted runs from 22nd November – 23rd December, 4:30pm – 8:00pm on selected dates. Tickets cost £7.50 per person (adult and child entry prices), with a visit to Santa’s Grotto priced at £7.50 per person.

Knowsley safari - A magical light trail in Liverpool

knowsley safari night out

What I loved about it:

The Santa’s grotto was great and Santa couldn’t have been more friendly and made it any more magical for the kids they loved it.

Suitable for:

Value for money (out of 10):.

A magical enchanted light trail around Knowsley Safari.

Christmas has well and Truly landed at Knowsley Safari park. Looking for A magical light trail in Liverpool? Then look no further. Santa and his Elves along with a bit of Christmas magic have transformed the foot safari. This wonderfully lit up enchanted trailer is perfect for children and their adults to enjoy.

Having been before I was very happy the event was back on again this year. It is great value for money as well as the kids loved it, This is Miles first Christmas event that he has been old enough to appreciate which made it even more Special.

The enchanted trail itself lasts around 45 minutes but there is nothing to say you couldn’t’ t walk around twice. The night time backdrop only accentuates the amazing lights in the woodland. Our only downside was we attended just as storm was setting in so we didn’t stay to long.

You can pay for a ride pass which is £10 per child for unlimited rides. They have rides for all ages here including a carousel ride which is Maisie’s favourite. Entry to the park is any time from 4pm to arrive early for plenty of time to take advantage of the rides and the café onsite.

Want to see Santa while you’re here? It’s £12 for a Family of 6 and you get your picture included. If you want to take your own photos you can do as well. I did try to get a photo of the kids with Santa, however, Mile’s wasn’t a fan of the Jolly bearded man and cried the whole time. But who’s young children didn’t cry the first time they met the big guy.

Overall very happy with the little Grotto and Santa himself, Anybody else a bit of a Santa snob? It sounds superficial of me but there is nothing worse than paying through the nose for a grotto visit to find a Budget Santa in a Grotto decked out with a £10 Poundland decorations budget.

This is my go-to place to visit Santa and it will be for a long time as it’s just magical and offers so much more than just a grotto.

Already got it booked? don’t forget to use the hashtag #MakingMemoriesInLiverpool

UK's largest inflatable obstacle course arrives at Knowsley Safari for school holidays

The attraction has also slashed weekday ticket prices by 25% for the rest of august.

The UK's largest inflatable obstacle course, The Realm, has arrived at Knowsley Safari

Get the M.E.N.'s Manchester Family newsletter for all the latest from back to school news to ways to entertain the kids

We have more newsletters

It's already one of the region's most popular attractions, but Knowsley Safari has upped the ante this school holidays with the opening of the UK's largest inflatable obstacle course.

The Realm is a massive castle-themed inflatable course over 600ft long, with slides, tunnels and challenges galore.

It's open on weekdays from now until August 30 and costs £3 for kids and £1 for adults, in addition to ticket fees. However, these have been slashed by 25% for those dates, so it's not costing any more than a usual entry fee.

Read more: 50 things to do with the kids in and around Manchester this school holidays

The UK's largest inflatable obstacle course, The Realm, has arrived at Knowsley Safari

You can also buy a wristband for unlimited goes on the inflatable, which park bosses say 'is almost guaranteed to tire the children out'.

All the usual attractions are open at Knowsley, including the Safari Drive, the Foot Safari and the chance to see all kinds of animals, from tigers and lions, to baboons, camels, bears and a whole lot more.

Animal displays and talks take place daily, including the daily sea lion display at 12pm, 1.30pm, 3pm and 4.30pm and the birds of prey display at 12.45pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

It costs £3 for children to have a go

There's even more of a reason to visit this school holidays as a Somali wild ass - of which only a few hundred are left in the wild - has just been born at the site.

Classed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a critically endangered species, captive breeding programmes are extremely important for Somali wild ass and the addition of even one new foal is a huge boost for its ever-dwindling population.

The male foal, thought to be the first Somali wild ass born in the UK this year, was born to first time mum and dad Lahra, four, and Hansi, five.

A rare Somali wild ass has been born at Knowsley Safari

Lindsay Banks, team manager of Ungulates at Knowsley Safari, said: “The foal’s birth is a great moment for Knowsley Safari and the wider Somali wild ass species. There are so few in the world because they’re threatened by habitat loss, hunting, and competition with domestic livestock for resources. It means breeding programmes like ours are crucial for the species’ survival. If they stopped, Somali wild ass could face extinction.

“Somali wild ass are often mistaken for donkeys, but they are a fabulous species in their own right and deserve more awareness and appreciation. I’m sure visitors will grow to love Somali wild ass as much as we do when they get to watch our new bundle of energy give his mum the run around on the Safari Drive.”

Tickets for Knowsley Safari, costing from £15, can be booked online . Toddlers aged one and two cost £2 and babies under one go free.

08/01/2019 Cheney State Park if fully back up and going.  We do have some areas that maintenance has not been able to get to yet so we ask for your patience.  They worked very hard at getting the electrical sites fixed in Heimerman Point and Marina hookups so they deserve a pat on the back for their dedication to getting them back for the customers as soon as they could.

NEW HOURS.  STARTING MONDAY, THE OFFICE WILL BE OPEN TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY 8:00 TO 4:30 UNTIL LABOR DAY WEEKEND when we go back to off-season hours.  Hope this doesn't inconvenience our customers too much.  Extra office staff is headed back to school.

Be sure to check out O'Briens Marina on the East shore area of Cheney State Park.  There are more things being added all of the time.  Their phone number is 316-570-4136.  There is also a bait shop at the west entrance of Cheney, West Side Bait and Beer.  Lisa's number is 620-200-3893.

Our off-season office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm with a lunch closing from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm.

Be sure to check out our Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/CheneyStatePark  for current events and happenings at Cheney.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife  and  Parks (KDWP) reminds visitors that all Kansas state parks are open for business. State park camping areas, cabins, trails, boat ramps, and other amenities are open, as are many of the businesses who serve lake visitors. KDWP offices and nature centers are open during regular hours, and access to all wildlife areas and fishing lakes operated by the department remains unchanged. Regular state park fees apply.

Hunting licenses, deer permits and boating registrations can also be taken care of here and we have a full range of brochures and information available. To get more information on seasons and purchasing permits, go to https://ksoutdoors.com

For more information about the availability and to make a reservation of a campsite or the cabins at Cheney State Park, go to www.reserveamerica.com , or call 316-542-3664. We have 225 water and electric utility sites available to reserve and 9 cabins.

Weather Station

The partnership of the Ninnescah Sailing Association, the Friends of Cheney Lake, and the Cheney Lake Association have worked to provide a weather station at Cheney State Park providing current weather conditions ‘real time’. The weather station can be accessed by going to www.ninnescah.org  and clicking on weather conditions.

Through these same partnerships and with their funding, we have some new aerial pictures in our photo gallery that help us with a better view of what conditions are and help in planning future projects. Check them out.

  CHENEY STATE PARK NEWS

Our cabins have become very popular and we have many repeat customers. The cabins came to Cheney State Park through the efforts of our Friends of Cheney Lake Group. They formed to enhance their enjoyment of Cheney Reservoir and to help provide improvements that the regular budget cannot cover. Their first project was finding funding for 7 rental cabins and after the fact providing for and paying for the upkeep of them. Our board members include the former manager of Cheney State Park, and members of the Ninnescah Sailing Association, as well as members of the Cheney Lake Association, another group formed to enhance Cheney State Park. We are very happy with the benefits that working with our Friends Group provides us.

We recently have added Cabin # 10, the Crappie, #11, the Walleye, and #12, the Catfish on the east side of the lake.  They are 2 bedroom cabins that we say can sleep up to 10 people. They have a full kitchen with a stove, refrigerator and dishes and rent for $150 a night for Friday and Saturday nights and both nights on a weekend need to be reserved. The price for Sunday through Thursdays evenings is $125 and its also the off-season price.

On the west shore area, the Osprey is a 2 bedroom cabin, and the Heron is a 1 bedroom cabin. The cost of them is $95.00 a night Sunday through Thursday and $120.00 a night on Friday and Saturday nights with an $14.00 transaction fee. We're estimate they will sleep 6 to 8 with the Osprey having two sets of bunkbeds in one bedroom, a full sized bed and futon in the other bedroom and a futon in the living area. It is also more furnished than our other cabins with a full sized refrigerator and stove, dishes, cookware and utensils. The Heron has a full sized bed and a futon in the bedroom, a futon and a Murphy bed in the living room. You will still have to bring your own bedding and towels.

It’s beautiful this time of year and very relaxing, perfect for a retreat. REMINDER! The cabins can be reserved up to a year in advance and there are gift certificates available to give as gifts. The prices of the smaller cabins are $85.00 a night on Fridays, Saturdays, and Holidays, and we require both nights on a weekend to be reserved and all three nights on a Holiday weekend. The price Sunday through Thursday is $65.00 a night and there is an $14.00 one time transaction fee for each reservation. These prices are in effect until the off-season starts October 1st. The prices are then $65.00 a night every night.

View from the Cabin

We are getting ready to staff the State Fair Cabin at the Kansas State Fair.  It's a way to see an example of the cabins that are available in our State Parks for renting.  The cabin is very well received by the public and hopefully will generate visitation to the State Parks when people see there are alternatives to "sleeping on the ground." The new online reservation system is available now so it's now possible to check availability and make a cabin reservation online.

Partnerships

Cheney State Park is fortunate to have a great partnership with the Ninnescah Sailing Association. Through their efforts, they have built a gorgeous facility and we are lucky to have such great neighbors. The sailing club sponsors events that draw participants nation-wide to our park, and we always receive positive comments about the beauty of the club grounds and our park. Thank you for being such good stewards of Department Lands.   This year the club and the lake both celebrated 50 years of existence.

Cheney Reservoir is considered to be a premier sailing, windsurfing, and kite-boarding lake. We have even been ranked one of the 10 windiest lakes by Windsurfing Magazine. Regattas are being held most weekends during the summer so you can often get a glimpse of some colorful sails.

Here are some helpful documents for your trip to Cheney State Park.

Cheney Reservoir Map

Cheney Reservior was constructed by the BOR and was finished in 1965. The lake consists of 9,600 surface acres of water. The State Park consists of 1,913 acres in three counties on the South end of the lake, both on the East shore and West Shore.
