There are two mont royal hiking trails: via the stairs and around Olmsted Trail.

This information is in regards to hiking mount royal Montreal via the stairs and NOT using the switchbacks around the Montreal mountain.

Easy Montreal Hike – How to Hike Mont Royal Montreal

How to get to starting point to climb mont royal.

By metro: Take Line 1 to Peel Metro Station which is the closest to Mount Royal Park Montreal. From here, follow Peel Street to the path at the Uni.

By foot: Wherever you come from, if you head toward Downtown Montreal (where the skyscrapers and central station is) before getting to Old Montreal, you will pass the entrance to McGill University.

By bus: Bus number 11 will take you to the entrance of the Uni near Tim Hortons (classic Canada).

Directions for Mount Royal Lookout

Walk the length of the path within the McGill University grounds towards the main building and bear left.

Join a slightly inclined road so the main building is on your right.

Cross the road until you get to Pine Avenue West and Peel Street intersection and cross at the traffic lights.

This is the beginning of the hike up Mont Royal at the stairs or turn right to follow Olmsted Trail.

Either follow every set of stairs you can see on this route as you go up or follow the switchbacks on Olmsted.

You’ll see many more stairs like this:

Continue on the path until you see the large building at the observatory.

Directions for Finding the Mont Royal Cross

Continuing the mont royal montreal walk, you will want to the find croos.

From the lookout, turn your back to the city to look at the main building.

Follow the path to the left of the building (so the building is on your right).

This is the start of the circular loop that, if you keep following it, you will get back to the lookout spot.

After 20 minutes, you will find a small path that you can take to the right that will get you next to the cross.

Then you can either turn back on yourself to get back to the mount royal Montreal lookout or you can continue the trail to get you there quicker and to complete the loop.

Woo, you have completed the Mount Royal hike!

What Is The Montreal Cross?

The Mount Royal also known as Croix du Mont Royal sits at the top of the hill overlooking the city. It has been there, in one form or another, since the 1600s, starting as a wooden cross that the founder of Montreal placed there as a vow if the city survived flooding. Which it did.

Today it is made of steel, stands at 98 feet and covered in LED lighting.

Our Plateau Mont-Royal & Mile End walking tour kicks off when you meet your MTL Detours guide at the edge of Saint Louis Square, right in front of the Institut de tourisme et d’hôtellerie du Québec. The surrounding area boasts beautiful Victorian-era architecture, and we’ll lead you down some residential streets to point out the typical architecture of the neighbourhood – iconic three-story triplexes with their distinctive wrought iron outdoor staircases.

Next, we’ll visit the multicultural hub of Saint Laurent Boulevard, where different waves of immigrants have arrived and settled over the years. Along the way, we’ll see plenty of photo-worthy murals and street art – evidence of Montreal’s reputation as one of the world’s top mural arts hotspots! We will learn about the Jewish influence in the city and walk by some important Montreal “institutions”, including the legendary Schwartz’s Deli, one of the oldest delis in Canada.

Of course, this wouldn’t be an MTL Detours tour if we didn’t take you to some hidden gems along the way! Please note , we ask that all guests  arrive at least 10 minutes before  the tour start time. As our tours begin on time, latecomers may not be able to join the tour.

Tour ends in the vicinity of Waverly and Saint-Viateur Street.

This tour has an age minimum of 12 years old. Please check out our private tour option to include guests under 12.

Not wheelchair accessible and not suitable for guests with mobility restrictions or serious health issues. Please inquire about the possibility of booking a private tour.

Guests must like to walk – a lot! This tour involves plenty of walking at a decent pace (up to approx. 6km /4 miles). Be ready to be on your feet and moving for close to the entire 3-hour duration.

Places to sit and rest are very limited.

Does weather affect the tour?

This tour runs in all weather – rain, shine, or snow! However, we occasionally have to cancel a tour in the event of extreme or violent weather (severe thunderstorms, freezing rain, high winds, or major snowstorm, for example). Should this occur, you will be offered another date or a full refund. Please monitor your messages/email if inclement weather is expected.

How should I dress?

Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions! These tours are entirely outdoors.

Cancellation policy

Our tours are 100% refundable up to 24 hours before the tour start time. Please be mindful that the later you wait to cancel, the harder it is for us to fill your spots. If you cancel less than 24 hours ahead of time or do not show up for the date and time that you booked, unfortunately, any sums paid will be 100% non-refundable. No-shows, bookings for incorrect dates/times and late arrivals are not eligible for refunds. We can try to fit you onto another tour, pending availability, but cannot guarantee this option. How Long Will This Montreal Free Walking Tour Take?

Not including the time spent at each stop, this self-guided Montreal walking tour will take an estimated 1 hour and 45 minutes of pure walking from place to place. 

However, plan to start relatively early in the morning and set aside an entire day. That way, you can really take your time and check out all the cool things to see and do. As you’re about to find out, there are lots!

The Perfect Self-Guided Montreal Walking Tour

​​ Say “Mount Royal” three times fast. Does it sound familiar?

That’s right, this park is where the city of Montreal got its name! Needless to say, there’s no better place to start your free walking tour of Montreal than at its namesake. 

Mount Royal Park is located on a hill, so be prepared to do a little physical exercise. If you’re really not feeling it, you can also take the bus number 11 from the corner of avenue du Park and avenue du Mont-Royal Est to the Remembrance/Chemin du Chalet stop. This will leave you a short walk away from the Mount Royal Lookout!

However, as the day is young and your tour has just begun, I recommend doing the 25-minute nature walk up the side of the mountain on foot. 

After all, that’s what Canada is known for — rocks and trees and trees and rocks — and it wouldn’t be a true Montreal walking tour without seeing any!

Take the Chemin Olmsted from the monument up to the staircase. There will be signs for the “Chalet du Mont-Royal,” “Belvédère,” and “Point de Due” — the latter is what you want to follow to reach the breathtaking view of the city skyline. 

In the summer, you’ll find dozens of joggers, bikers, and picnickers, but Mont Royal Park is an excellent place to find things to do in the winter in Montreal too. Cross-country skiing is a popular option, but you can also just stroll around and admire how mother nature transforms the leafless forest into a snow-capped winter fairy-tale.

2. Saint-Laurent Boulevard

Back down at the monument, you’re just a few blocks away from the Boulevard Saint-Laurent. Take your time to walk down this street nicknamed “The Main” as you head towards the river. 

Boulevard Saint-Laurent is teeming with boutiques, shops, cafés, clubs, bars, and restaurants, and the famous Schwartz’s smoked meat deli if you get the munchies. 

And make sure to keep your eyes wide open for the beautiful murals that decorate this street. But don’t dawdle too long; there are lots more sights to see on your Montreal walking tour, and you surely don’t want to miss them! 

3. (Optional) Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Montreal was founded in 1964 with just a couple hundred works of art, and has since grown into a collection of over 8,000 art pieces by artists from Quebec and around the world. The art shows remarkable diversity, embracing historically significant events, current societal issues, and emerging practices.

This stop on your Montreal walking tour is optional, and in fact, until December 2021, it’s out of the tour entirely, as the museum building closed for reconstruction in June of 2021 .

The renovations will take four years to complete, doubling the building’s size and turning the museum into a representation of the very thing it houses — contemporary art. 

In the meantime, a temporary museum space will open in the nearby Place Ville-Marie, and will include exhibitions and creative workshops.

4. Chinatown

It you’re a budget traveler looking for free things to do in Montreal , then Chinatown is a definite must! Just stroll around the block-sized neighborhood and let your eyes feast on the colorful streets soaked in history. 

Montreal’s Chinatown is one of the oldest Asian communities on the North American continent, emerging in the 1890s as Chinese immigrants moved from west to east on the newly built Canadian Pacific Railway. Most of them settled in Montreal, creating a residential neighborhood which has since become largely commercial.

This area is basically one large block, bordering rue Saint-Dominique, Boulevard René-Lévesque Ouest, avenue Viger Ouest, and rue Jeanne-Mance. It’s sliced in the middle by rue de la Gauchetière Ouest and Boulevard Saint-Laurent, where most of the businesses are concentrated. 

If you walk along the borders of Chinatown, you’ll find the four ornate gateways, or “paifang”, marking the entrances to the area. I highly recommend checking them out, as no other Chinatown in Canada has this many pairings! 

Of course, there are many other things worth seeing in Montreal’s Chinatown, including:

• The “May an Old Song Open a New World” mural : Prepare a good pose before you come here, as this is one of the most Instagrammable spots in Montreal!
• The Wing Building , built by the same architect as the Notre-Dame Basilica.
• Place Sun Yet Sen : a public square with a traditional Chinese decorative structure that doubles as a souvenir shop.
• The Lee Family Association and Wong Won Su Association , where newly arrived Chinese immigrants received support and counseling. Today, a display of photos and artifacts offers you a peek into the immigrant’s journey.

If you need a change of scenery, why not dive down into Montreal’s Underground City? 

This optional stop will take you into a subterranean labyrinth right under the heart of the city. Stretching over 33 kilometers, the Underground City connects metro stations to shopping plazas, with every possible form of activity along the way.

If you’re lost, just follow the RÉSO network signs that tell you where things are located, from artisanal souvenir shops and stylish boutiques to endless food and entertainment options. Colorful fountains and extensive playgrounds also offer plenty of things to do with kids in Montreal!

Works left by the Art Souterrain Festival make sure art-lovers get their fill, while free Wi-Fi and the Espace Services charging station keep even the biggest social media addicts content. Basically, there is something here for every traveler. 

Diving into this underground pedestrian network is also a great way to escape the sweltering heat or face-numbing cold that frequently invades the city streets, all without holing yourself up at home. If you’re looking for things to do in winter in Montreal, look no further than the Underground City!

You could easily spend the entire day in the Underground City, but don’t lose track of time, because your Montreal walking tour isn’t quite over yet!

6. Old Montreal

Now, it’s time for our Old Montreal self guided walking tour!

This stop is practically made for Montreal walking tours , as it’s Montreal’s historic center.

The word “historic” might feel somewhat exaggerated when it’s applied to buildings built predominantly in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially when you compare it to Europe where you can casually stroll past buildings that date back to hundreds of years BCE. But for a country that only recently celebrated its 150th birthday, 300 years is practically ancient. 

Needless to say, Old Montreal will give you a taste of Canadian history, with its colonial and European past etched into every cobble-stoned street. Some streets have even kept their original names! This area is also purely pedestrian, creating the perfect atmosphere for walking tours in Montreal. 

The buildings vary in architectural style and have been mostly preserved. Today, they serve as shops, boutique hotels, galleries, cafés, bars, and atmospheric restaurants. With so many beautiful spots scattered around, it’s one of the best Montreal solo travel destinations!

If you’d like to visit everything there is to see in Old Montreal, plan to spend up to 2 hours here. However, if you’d just like to see a few highlights, here are some landmarks worth noting:

• Edifice Aldred : A building with a strong resemblance to New York’s Empire State Building, and also built in the same year (1931)!
• Vieux Séminaire de St-Sulpice : The city’s oldest building (1657), and still surrounded by its original stone walls.
• Hôtel the Ville : The city hall which was nearly destroyed by a fire in 1922.
• Château Ramezay : Initially home to French governors, then taken over by British governors, then invaded and held by American rebels, and also a temporary home to Benjamin Franklin — if walls could talk, this building would put Gossip Girl to shame!
• Notre-Dame Basilica : An intricately decorated basilica and where Québec-born singer Céline Dion got married in 1994 — just step inside and you’ll see why!

Some destinations in our old Montreal walking tour, such as the Notre Dame Basilica, cost money to visit. But no need to worry – there are also many free things to do in Old Montreal!

If you’re staying late in the city, come back to see this part of town in a different light. And I mean literally — over a dozen buildings are illuminated at night, creating a wonderfully romantic atmosphere. It’s one of the best things to do at night in Montreal!

7. Old Port of Montreal

• Cost : Free (outdoors)

As we near the end of our walking tour in Montreal, we come to the Old Port of Montreal. Once the commercial hub of the city, this area has since been transformed into a waterfront park. 

In the summer, there are an abundance of Old Port Montreal activities; it’s a prime spot for walking, jogging, cycling, and in-line skating. But if you’ve had enough physical movement for the day, I recommend sitting in the park and doing some people-watching!

You’ll also have a great view of Habitat 67 , a distinctive 158-unit housing project built for the 1967 World’s Fair. The architect’s original vision for the building was to show what affordable community housing could look like — but ironically enough, it’s become a private high-end apartment complex. 

8. La Grande Roue de Montréal

• Opening Hours: 10 am-11 pm, Monday through Sunday
• Cost : Just under $26 
• Time Estimate : 20-minute ride

The last stop on our Montreal walking tour is La Grande Roue de Montréal. You may be relieved to hear that this stop involves more sitting than walking — it is, in fact, a panoramic Ferris wheel.

The price may be a little steep, but this isn’t just any old Ferris wheel. Bringing you to a height of 60 meters, La Grande Roue is the biggest observation wheel in the country. 

Keeping in mind that Canada is prone to experiencing extreme weather conditions virtually any day of the year (Canada, eh?), La Grande Roue offers its guests the rare comfort of air conditioning or heating, making it one of the best things to do in Montreal in winter and summer!

This is the perfect ambiance for admiring a 360-degree view of the city. The ride lasts for 20 minutes, giving you ample time to soak up the twinkling lights of Montreal.

Parc du Mont-Royal is a beautiful hilltop park offering hiking trails and spectacular views of the city

The city of Montreal derives its name from Mount Royal, the large hill that overlooks Montreal Island and the Saint Lawrence River. Spread out over the hill is Parc du Mont-Royal, the most famous of Montreal's parks. From the upper portions you can enjoy unsurpassed views of the city and its surroundings.

The mountain is technically more of a large hill with a total of three peaks ranging in height from 659-754 feet above sea level. Covering an area just shy of 500 acres, the park offers visitors a wide range of activities. From spring through autumn visitors can enjoy walking or hiking on the many paths and taking in the beautiful vistas of the Montreal Skyline and beyond. Paddle boats can be rented at the small lake. During the winter months you can still walk or hike, but you can also enjoy cross-country skiing, ice skating on Beaver Lake or tubing and tobogganing on the toboggan runs. Equipment rentals are available. For a real workout try climbing the Mount Royal Stairs, 400 wooden steps up the mountain starting from the corner of Peel Street and Pine Avenue.

The park is beautiful anytime of the year, but is particularly well known for the colourful displays of foliage throughout its mixed forests during autumn.

A prominent feature of the park is the giant 103 foot cross that sits atop the hill. Brilliant LED lighting make it especially prominent at night. The lights are normally white, but the color can be changed for special occasions. The current cross was erected in 1924, but its roots go all the way back to 1643 when the first cross was erected to fulfill a vow made by the city's founder, Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve, when praying to Virgin Mary to prevent a threatening flood.

There are a couple of popular lookouts on the hill. The largest is Belvedere Kondiaronk which was built in 1906. It sits in front of the historic Chalet du Mont-Royal, a magnificent stone building constructed as a 'make work project' during the Great Depression which served as a venue for Big Band concerts throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Today the Chalet can be reserved for major provincial, national or international events providing they do not interfere with the ability of visitors to access the park and the lookout. When the Chalet is not being used for a special event, you can visit the cafeteria for snacks and refreshments. The rustic interior features exposed wood beams and a stone fireplace. Original paintings illustrating the history of Montreal hang from the walls. The other belvedere, a bit of a lovers point, looks east toward Olympic Park.

During the summer season you can ride a free shuttle bus between Laurier Metro Station and the Belvedere Kondiaronk lookout. The 804 Shuttle operates every 30 minutes. Scroll down to the directions section below for more details.

The greenspace of Mount Royal is further extended along the western flank by two expansive cemeteries; Mont-Royal and Cote-des-Neiges and on the northeast by Parc Jeanne-Mance which has a soccer field, baseball diamonds and tennis courts. Dining in the park is available in the Pavilion located by Beaver Lake where you can choose from a cafeteria or formal dining room.

With so much to offer, Parc du Mont Royal should definitely be on your must see list and is a place where you can easily enjoy the better part of an entire day. For a completely different view don't miss the opportunity to visit one of the lookouts at night as well.

How to get to Parc du Mont-Royal by Metro

By Metro and Free Shuttle Bus: From mid June until mid September STM offers free shuttle bus service between Laurier Metro Station and the Kondiaronk Belevedere lookout. The Route 804 Shuttle operates every 30 minutes with departures from Laurier Metro Station between 9 am and 12:30 pm.

By Metro and Bus: Take Metro Line 2 to Station Mont-Royal and catch bus 11-O (West) at stop 54005 on the east side of the station. The first stop in the park is by a lookout that provides some nice views to the east. There is a hiking trail that starts from the south end of the parking area located at the stop. The bus makes 2 more stops along the park before looping around at the other end close to Beaver Lake and the Pavilion which is another good place to disembark and begin exploring.

By Metro and Hiking: if you feel like a good workout, you can take Metro Line 1 to Peel Station; exit and walk (northwest) up Peel Street to the steps at the base of Mount Royal where you can climb up the 400 steps (9 minutes to the start of the climb). Plateau Mont-Royal is home to some of Montreal’s most striking frescoes, notably as part of the well-respected Mural Festival . Only in Montreal could you host an event where people are encouraged to literally paint the town. The 10-day affair is largely based in the vicinity of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and features free outdoor concerts, an art fair and guided tours.

That is in addition to the dozens of occasional commissioned works by local artists across the neighbourhood as well. Definitely something for your Instagram stories!

Although not quite as leafy as, say, London, Montreal does quite well nonetheless in terms of green grassy spaces, especially in Plateau Mont-Royal.

Oftentimes, locals will gather friends (along with a couple of bottles of wine for good measure) for an afternoon of leisure in the sun at any given park in the neighbourhood — although most would argue that Parc Sir Wilfrid Laurier is the de facto picnic capital of the city.

Other great parks to discover in the area?

• Try reading a book in the shadow of centennial trees by the serpentine in Parc Lafontaine
• Admire the view of Mont-Royal mountain in Parc Jeanne-Mance

In addition to vivid murals, Montreal is a sight for sore eyes with perfectly aligned rows of houses, colourful windows and twirling iron staircases.

If I had to pick one social media platform, it would probably be Instagram. I often use it to scout locations when I plan my travels; to me, it’s easier to get a real sense of a place from a local’s point of view through Instagram than through any other medium.

There’s a myriad of ways the shutterbug in you can capture the essence of Montreal in these Insta-friendly streets, in the stretch wedged between Prince-Arthur Street and Laurier Avenue:

It comes as a surprise to absolutely no one that Montrealers like their drink in the evening. And Plateau Mont-Royals bars are quite abundant, and rather attractive, too.

While most tourists will mistakenly opt to stay downtown or in Old-Montreal for a nightcap, there are true gems to be found just a bit further up north where the locals go and gather to celebrate a birthday, a milestone or just a plain old Tuesday.

Take part in special events and festivals

There are plenty of festivals and special events to take part in on Plateau Mont-Royal and not just in the warmer months, but in fact year-round.

Summer is, however, arguably the best time of the year to visit with major happenings like:

• Mural Festival (see above)
• POP Montréal in mid-September (vibrant multi-day festival championing independence in the arts by presenting emerging talents from around the world)
• The entire Mont-Royal Avenue is pedestrian-only from June to September, and dotted with 7 themed parks that were carefully designed for the occasion.
• Winter also brings Nuit blanche  to the area for those brave enough to face sub zero temperatures.
• Plus, the district’s team put together a series of lovery themed itineraries (French only, but Google Translate is your friend here) to explore the area with specific interests in mind: vinyls, used bookshops, vintage boutiques, sunny patios to get a drink. Enjoy!

Venture into the Mile End

Call it hipster capital, call it the artsiest district in Montreal — eclectic Mile End Montreal doesn’t care for labels.

Technically part of trendy Plateau Mont-Royal but infinitely more diverse, this effervescent district covers just about 10 blocks but is incidentally home to Canada’s largest concentration of artists, in addition to some of Montreal’s most acclaimed restaurants. This also is where some of the most interesting shopping in Montreal can be accomplished.

Where to hang out in Mile End Montreal

Catch a show.

Downtown Montreal is where the major arena shows will be performed; Plateau Mont-Royal, on the other hand, will welcome intimate gigs and open the stage to up-and-coming artists of various backgrounds and mediums with a promising future.

Casa del Popolo and sister establishment Sala Rossa , as well as Rialto Theatre  and Fairmount Theatre , are great places to catch live music shows while The Wiggle Room is dedicated to burlesque entertainment; Montreal Improv is quite self-explanatory, while endearingly outside-the-box  Mainline Theatre  is indie theatre’s home in the neighbourhood.

If your French allows, don’t miss out on the chance of seeing a play in one of the area’s many legendary theatres, like La Licorne , Espace Go , Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui or Théâtre du Rideau Vert .

Put on your eating pants

Rumour has it that Montreal has the second highest amount of restaurants per capita in North America – is that the best reason to wear your eating pants or what? But with so many eateries on offer, it can be hard to pick the right ones to visit during a short trip so I’ve done the legwork for you!

L'autobus 747 se rend au centre-ville de Montréal en s'arrêtant un peu partout le long du boulevard René-Lévesque, son premier arrêt est la station de métro Lionel-Groulx, permettant d'aller sur les lignes de métro orange et verte. Il termine sa course dans le quartier Latin, près de l'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), de la station centrale des autocars et de la station de métro Berri-UQAM. La ville de Montréal est desservie par le port de Montréal pour les activités de fret de marchandise. Les passagers de croisière s'arrêtent plutôt au vieux port de Montréal qui est sans contredit l'un des sites touristiques importants de la métropole.

Montréal compte deux gares de train régionales ainsi que plusieurs gares de train de banlieue. Les deux gares régionales sont la gare Centrale et la gare de Dorval .

La gare Centrale dessert des liaisons vers l'Est du Québec jusqu'en Gaspésie , les provinces de l'Atlantique , le Nord et Centre du Québec et l' Ontario à bord des trains de Via Rail ainsi que vers les États-Unis à bord des trains d' Amtrak .

La gare Dorval , où la majorité des trains servant de l'Ontario s'arrêtent, permet de faire une correspondance avec l'avion à l'aéroport international de Montréal Trudeau, situé tout près.

Le service d'autocars est assuré à la Gare d'autocars de Montréal. Elle est aussi accessible en métro à partir de la station Berri-UQAM.

La compagnie Orléans Express est le transporteur régional principal au Québec. Les étudiants et les personnes âgées bénéficient d'un rabais de 25 % sur le tarif régulier à bord des autocars Orléans Express.

Location d'autobus pour groupe et agence de voyage: Plusieurs compagnies offrent la location d'autocar de luxe, d'autobus et minibus, telles que: Autocar Bégin [1] , Autobus Nolisés Symphony [2] , Autobus Galland [3]

Pour vous garer, consultez le code de la route, car le stationnement est parfois bien compliqué à Montréal (jour de la semaine bloqué pour le balayage et plusieurs mois pendant l'hiver).

Pour circuler au centre-ville, il est déconseillé d'utiliser la voiture : les rues sont étroites, souvent à sens unique, et le stationnement est rare et assez cher. Il est plutôt de mise d'utiliser les transports en commun ( métro ou autobus), le vélo ou la marche pour se déplacer au centre-ville et dans les quartiers avoisinants.

Les transports en commun desservent assez bien le centre-ville que les quartiers avoisinants (arrêts rapprochés, fréquence assez élevée). Le métro ne circule pas la nuit (environ de 1  h  -  5  h ), mais certaines lignes d'autobus sur les rues les plus importantes sont en opération durant la nuit.

Afin de planifier votre itinéraire, vous pouvez utiliser Google Maps, l'application mobile de la STM, les planibus (horaire d'autobus en papier) disponibles dans le métro . Il est possible de transporter votre vélo dans le métro , sauf lors de certaines périodes à grand achalandage (heures de pointes, événements spéciaux).

Fait intéressant : le design de chaque station de métro à Montréal a été confiée à un artiste différent, ce qui fait que chaque station est unique, contrairement à d'autres villes ou chaque station est semblable.

Les grands adeptes de vélo vous diront que la ville manque de pistes cyclables, malgré le réseau cyclable de plus de 450  km , dont une partie est cyclable aussi l'hiver ! On peut également rouler dans les rues sans piste cyclable, en restant sagement dans la voie de droite, mais il faut se méfier des automobilistes qui ne sont pas toujours courtois ni très attentifs. Le port du casque est vivement conseillé mais non obligatoire.

Montréal est doté d'un réseau de vélos libre-service appelé BIXI [4] qui dessert principalement le centre-ville et le plateau. Le concept consiste en la location d'un vélo pour 5  $C ( ~3,32 € - cours du 07/09/2024) (~3,11 Fr. - cours du 07/09/2024) (~3,69 $ - cours du 07/09/2024) (~2 179,49 F CFA - cours du 07/09/2024) par jour pour faire des courts déplacements de 30  min ou moins.

Vous pouvez également utiliser votre propre vélo, mais prenez garde de bien le sécuriser avec un cadenas : le vol de vélo est très fréquent à Montréal, particulièrement dans la région du plateau.

Orientation

Il est important de noter que certaines adresses contiennent l'orientation de la rue (généralement est ou ouest, plus rarement nord ou sud). La longueur de certaines artères incite à porter une attention particulière à cette précision. À noter que les points cardinaux utilisés par les Montréalais pour se situer dans la ville sont fictifs et ne correspondent pas aux points cardinaux réels.

La limite entre les orientations est et ouest des rues est le boulevard Saint-Laurent, qui est un important axe nord-sud. La numérotation des bâtiments situés sur les axes est/ouest débutant à hauteur du boulevard Saint-Laurent, les "petits" numéros sont donc situés à proximité de cette rue. La numérotation des axes nord-sud débute au fleuve St-Laurent (le sud fictif) et augmente en allant vers le nord de la ville.

Il vaut mieux demander l'intersection quand on est donné une adresse : les rues sont parfois « très » longues (par exemple, le boulevard Gouin est long de 50  km !)

La plupart des rues du centre-ville forment un quadrillage, et lorsque les rues sont à sens unique, il existe généralement une alternance entre les deux sens.

De la mi-juin à la fin juillet, le plus grand concours pyrotechnique au monde ( L'international des feux Loto-Québec [5] ) présente une ou deux fois par semaine des feux d'artifice des plus spectaculaires. Lors de ceux-ci, le pont Jacques-Cartier (accessible via la station de métro Papineau) est fermé aux voitures, permettant aux piétons d'y prendre place pour avoir une vue à couper le souffle. L'été, le Festival de Jazz [6] , le Festival d'humour Juste pour rire [7] ainsi que les Francofolies [8] offrent des spectacles en salles (payants) et à l'extérieur (gratuits). Une multitude de fêtes et de festivals à caractère culturel sont offerts: Festival International Nuits Afrique [9] , Festival de la Présence Autochtone, FestiBlues International, Festival MEG Montréal, Les Escales Improbables de Montréal, Festival des Films du Monde, Mondial de la Bière, Festival Divers/Cité (fierté gaie et lesbienne/queer), etc. La plupart des festivals se déroulent aux alentours de la Place des Arts ou ailleurs au centre-ville. Le Mont-Royal , en plus d'héberger au pied de son versant un festival de tam-tam hebdomadaire le dimanche , permet le retour à la nature non loin du centre-ville. Il est bon de noter que certains événements de la culture under-ground ne paraissent pas sur ce site.

Le Vieux-Montréal et le Vieux-Port sont aussi des incontournables pour les touristes.

Plusieurs musées d'art (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Musée d'art contemporain, etc.) et autres musées d'histoire (Pointe-à-Callière, Musée McCord, Maison Saint-Gabriel, Château Ramezay, etc.) sont aussi présents dans la ville.

Quelques endroits à ne pas manquer :

• le parc du Mont-Royal, avec les Tam-Tam du dimanche
• le cimetière Côte-des-Neiges
• le quartier chinois
• la rue Sainte-Catherine, l'ouest avec ses boutiques branchées ; le centre (intersection du Boulevard St-Laurent) pour le Red Light et ses clubs de danseuses nues ; l'est du centre-ville (métro Beaudry et Papineau) pour le Village Gai
• la rue Saint-Denis avec ses cafés et ses restaurants
• la Petite Italie et le marché Jean-Talon : ses lieux typiques, son allure européenne
• la place Jacques-Cartier
• le Vieux-Port, quartier historique, avec sa promenade et son parc,
• la ville souterraine  : ne pas s'y méprendre, personne n'habite dans la « ville souterraine », ce sont en fait des grands centres commerciaux reliés entre eux par un complexe souterrain ; il suffit d'entrer par une des boutiques du centre Eaton ou du complexe Les Ailes de la mode.
• la vue de Montréal à partir de l'île Sainte-Hélène
• la vue de Montréal du haut du Mont-Royal
• le Plateau, le quartier des maisons colorées faisant penser à Nottinghill de Londres ; célèbre pour ses habitations de briques et de fer forgé ainsi que sa faune bigarrée plutôt cool... il s'agit du cœur de la communauté artistique de Montréal
• les quartiers Outremont et Westmount et leurs très belles maisons (cottages à l'anglaise).

L'hiver très rude et froid du Québec permet de pratiquer le patin à glace sur les nombreuses patinoires extérieures. Il y en a plusieurs dans tous les quartiers. La plupart sont gratuites (Parc Lafontaine, Lac des Castors au Mont-Royal, etc). Il suffit juste d'être équipé ! La patinoire du Vieux Port est payante (un abonnement pour la saison est disponible et très peu onéreux) mais la qualité de la glace et le décor en valent la peine ! Pour les plus frileux, les patinoires intérieures sont également nombreuses (généralement avec entrée payante mais assez raisonnable), même si l'expérience est toute différente ! Mentionnons, toutefois, la patinoire intérieure du "1000 de la Gauchetière" , ouverte tout au long de l'année et profitant de la lumière extérieure diffusée par une verrière.

Situé au cœur de la ville, le mont Royal propose également une multitude d'activités hivernales sur la montagne: ski de fond, raquettes, glissades. Les usagers du parc peuvent participer aux cours et randonnées proposées par les Amis de la montagne ou bien simplement louer du matériel pour évoluer seul au sein du parc, les tarifs de location restant très abordables. Le belvédère du mont Royal est l'endroit parfait pour admirer le centre-ville, tout en voyant le fleuve au loin.

Le hockey est le sport roi. Allez voir un match de l'équipe mythique des Canadiens de Montréal dans l'incroyable et spectaculaire Centre Bell ! « Go Habs Go ! » Mais attention, les billets sont très chers.

L'auberge de jeunesse de Montréal propose des billets à moins de 35  $C ( ~23,25 € - cours du 07/09/2024) (~21,76 Fr. - cours du 07/09/2024) (~25,8 $ - cours du 07/09/2024) (~15 256,42 F CFA - cours du 07/09/2024) pour les résidents de l'auberge. Si vous n'êtes pas résident, que vous souhaitez vivre l'expérience d'un match mais que vous ne voulez pas dépenser trop, il suffit de vous poster devant l'auberge et d'attendre que quelqu'un en sorte. Demandez gentiment à la personne résidant à l'auberge qu'elle aille acheter un billet pour vous et le tour est joué! Cela ne coûte rien de demander et cela peut faire épargner beaucoup!

Montez en voiture dans le Québec et partez faire du skidoo (motoneige) ou encore du traîneau à chien l'hiver ! Expérience inoubliable !

L'été, Montréal propose plusieurs événements extérieurs. À caractère sportif, Le football canadien est à l'honneur avec les Alouettes, jouant au Parc de l'université McGill (stade Percival-Molson), dans une ambiance survoltée, premier essai Montréal. Pour les amateurs de course automobile, le cirque de la F-1 débarque au circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, faisant vibrer la métropole pendant une semaine de festivités (généralement la deuxième ou troisième semaine de juin). Le mois d'août était tout aussi FAST avec la Série CHAMPCAR qui faisait son arrêt à la fin du mois, mais qui sera remplacé par la série NASCAR, série de type "stock car" américaine. Un autre événement s'installe dans la métropole au mois d'août, les meilleures raquettes de tennis au monde viennent s'affronter dans l'arène du stade Uniprix pour remporter la coupe Rogers. Le tournoi est disputé en alternance (une année sur deux) par les dames et les messieurs. Les amateurs de football à l'européenne (appelé « soccer » à Montréal et le reste de l'Amérique du Nord) se rendront au Stade Saputo pour encourager les joueurs de l'Impact.

Du côté culturel, venez fêter la St-Jean-Baptiste (fête nationale des Québécois) le 24 juin. De nombreuses célébrations, concerts gratuits et diverses activités émaillent la ville à cette occasion.

Le rendez-vous hebdomadaire de l'été: Les Tam-Tam du dimanche, au Parc du Mont-Royal, un immense rassemblement de tam-tam jouant en cœur. Chacun trouve sa place dans cette foule hétéroclite. On peut y aller simplement pour faire la sieste, lire un livre, danser au son des tam-tam, jouer de la musique, flâner devant les stands des marchands ambulants installés sur des couvertures à même le sol, prendre le lunch, discuter entre amis, passer du bon temps en famille, etc. Situé sur l'Avenue du Parc au coin de la rue Mont-Royal ouest, station de métro Mont-Royal. L'île Sainte-Hélène abrite un immense parc d'attractions: La Ronde. Il y a une multitude de manèges et bien d'autres activités y sont proposées. On offre aussi des billets combinant l'accès au parc et une place assise pour le festival international de feux d'artifices.

Le Vieux-Port de Montréal offre des excursions en tout genre sur le Fleuve St-Laurent : Bateau Saute-Mouton (émotions fortes!), Bateau Amphibie (idéal pour une balade en famille). CF Montréal Academy enters its fifth MLS NEXT season with three teams

MONTREAL - Starting Saturday, CF Montréal's U15, U16 and U18 men's teams kick off their 2024-2025 season in MLS NEXT, the fifth in the Club's Academy history.

The regular season will include nearly 30 matches from September to June. Ten will be played at Centre Nutrilait and open to the public free of charge. After their opening match at New England FC this Saturday, September 7, the three teams will play their first match of the season in Montreal on Saturday, September 21, against the New York Soccer Club private academy.

The Academy's U16 and U18 teams will also take part in MLS NEXT's major tournaments, including MLS NEXT Fest (December 2024) and the Generation adidas Cup (April 2025). Additionally, the three Academy teams will compete in MLS NEXT Flex in May 2025, with the aim to qualify all three squads for the MLS NEXT Cup playoffs at the end of the season.

Last season, the U17 team clinched a playoff spot. In 2022-2023, the U15 team was a finalist in the MLS NEXT Cup, a season-ending tournament in Dallas, Texas. It was the first final in the Academy's history.

"Having three teams playing in MLS NEXT this season is very positive," said Academy Director Marinos Papageorgopoulos. "Starting at U15, players will be able to benefit from four to five years of exceptional exposure and develop in the best soccer competitive platform in North America."

The Women's Program, cofounded by BMO, finalists this season in Ligue1 Québec, will return to training on Monday and the season will resume in spring.
