Subaru Outback: How To Use Cruise Control

Cruise Control is a cool way to put your Subaru Outback on autopilot, so to speak. In this setting, the vehicle can maintain speeds of 25mph or more without having to press the accelerator. However, it will not set at below 25mph. In addition, the feature disconnects when the brake is applied.

While this is a wonderful feature, be aware that cruise control can be dangerous on winding roads, in traffic, and on wet slippery, or icy roads. With that being said, here are the uncomplicated steps to set your Cruise Control.

2010 – 2023 Models

  • Press the Cruise Control icon located on the RIGHT side of the steering wheel, notated by the top arrow in the image ( CC Icon ).
  • Once you reach your cruising speed, press the S ET/ − button (Middle Bottom).
  • Cruise control is now SET, and you will see the following icon within the dashboard to inform you that it is now  Active .
  • You can now take your foot off of the accelerator and ride.
  • Press the RES/ + button to INCREASE your speed (Middle Top).
  • Press the S ET/ − button to DECREASE your speed. Both by 5 miles only at a time.

1999 – 2009

  • Locate the cruise control lever on the right side of the steering wheel.
  • Push the  lever down  to  decrease speed .
  • Push the  lever up  to  increase speed .
  • Push the  lever forward  to  set  the cruise control.
  • Push the  button  on the lever to  disable  it.

1995 – 1998 Models

  • Push  Cruise  on the left-hand side of the steering wheel.
  • Press  Set Coast  when you reach your desired speed.

Subaru Outbacks Are Equipped With Cruise Control Eyesight

  • Still using the buttons on the RIGHT side of the steering wheel.
  • With your speed still SET ,  press the TOP LEFT button to move CLOSER to the vehicle ahead.
  • Press the BOTTOM LEFT button to move FARTHER AWAY from the vehicle ahead.
  • If the vehicle ahead slows down, your Outback will as well, WITHOUT you pressing the brake.
  • If you press the brake by mistake, just press RES/ + to resume the previous speed .

Cancel Cruise Control

  • Stepping on the brake lightly will disengage the speed and will save the previous set speed.
  • Pressing the CRUISE CONTROL button will turn the system OFF .
  • A Car above a meter (On/Off) – Press to turn the system ON/OFF ; Be sure the system is OFF when not using it as if RES/ + or SET/ −   is active, you could accidentally hit either, which will cause your vehicle to enter cruise control mode automatically.
  • SET/ − (Set/Coast) -Used to set or decrease your desired speed.
  • RES/ + – To maintain the desired speed or to accelerate the set speed. To increase the speed, press this button.

You are now ALL SET!

**NOTE: If you are unable to activate this feature on the first try, REPEAT the steps. If you are still unsuccessful, contact the dealership for assistance or consult your vehicle user’s manual.

I would like to be able to increase or decrease 1 mile per hour at a time. Is this possible with the increase or decrease button? Please advise.

I’m told by Subaru you can decrease using the buttons. I however can only increase and decrease by 5 mph. I’m told if you hit the decrease button fast it will change by 1 mph, but I can’t do it. Subaru told me its working correctly. This is on an outback with Eyesite. On my 2017 forester I can decrease and increase by 1 mph.

Does cruise control in the Subaru 2018 Outback stay engaged when it stops the car as the car in front slows and stops? Will it resume control as that car moves on? ?

You have to press the gas pedal to reactive when the car in front moves again.

What is adaptive cruise control (acc).

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is an intelligent driver assistance feature that works as an enhancement to traditional cruise control. Using a system of advanced sensors such as radar and cameras, ACC determines the speed and conditions of surrounding traffic and automatically adjusts cruising speed to maintain a safe distance within the flow of traffic. Many ACC systems can also recognize sudden changes in traffic conditions and alert the driver to take action to prevent a crash.

Depending on vehicle manufacturer and the system itself, any number of other terms might be used interchangeably with Adaptive Cruise Control, including:

  • Active Cruise Control
  • Dynamic Cruise Control
  • Automatic Cruise Control
  • Intelligent Cruise Control
  • Smart Cruise Control
  • Radar Cruise Control

How does Adaptive Cruise Control Work?

ACC uses a set of intelligent sensors including radar, lidar, lasers, GPS, and cameras. These sensors are placed around a vehicle’s exterior to monitor the road and nearby vehicles. Gathering real-time data on the distance away and speed of the vehicle in front, these sensors allow the ACC system to adjust the car’s speed as-needed. Typically, the driver sets their desired cruising speed when they engage ACC on the highway. The system then automatically accelerates and decelerates to stay at a safe distance from other cars within the flow of traffic.

Much like using traditional cruise control, activating ACC is intentionally simple so that a driver can easily use it while keeping their eyes safely on the road. Generally, the dedicated ACC button or switch is located on the steering wheel or control panel. Pressing or toggling this mechanism allows the driver to set their initial cruising speed. In some systems, drivers can also set their desired following distance.

While operating, certain ACC systems can take extra measures for safety and convenience purposes:

  • Maintaining a particular distance from vehicles ahead
  • Making complete stops in traffic and restarting from a complete stop when traffic resumes
  • Remaining engaged at low speeds in city traffic
  • Anticipating and automatically slowing around upcoming curves
  • Adjusting to posted speed limits as they change

Once in operation, the ACC system remains working until the driver disengages by either pressing the brake pedal or manually deactivating the system using the dedicated switch or button. Sometimes, ACC will use visual and audio cues to alert the driver to brake if it detects a possible collision ahead. In these instances, the driver must then re-engage the system once traffic resumes.

Benefits of Adaptive Cruise Control

Some of the benefits of adaptive cruise control include creating a more relaxed driving experience, particularly during long road trips and on highways, thanks to the system’s ability to adjust automatically to traffic speed variations and road conditions. Additionally, ACC encourages safe driving practices and helps reduce crash risk by monitoring following distance and alerting the driver or intervening if a vehicle is quickly approaching. Drivers using ACC may also see improved fuel efficiency, especially on the highway, since the system helps maintain an even speed and reduces unnecessary acceleration and braking.

Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control in Subaru Vehicles

The Subaru application of ACC is known as Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control. This feature functions seamlessly as part of our EyeSight ® Driver Assist technology —a comprehensive suite of safety features designed to enhance the driving experience. Nearly all Subaru models and trims come standard with EyeSight and Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control, including some of our most popular models like the Outback , Forester , Crosstrek , and Impreza . EyeSight is an available feature on our performance sports models with automatic transmissions, including the WRX and the BRZ , as well as those with manual transmissions.

Complementing its active cruise control functionality, EyeSight includes additional advanced features including Pre-Collision Braking and Throttle Management, Automatic Emergency Steering, Lane Centering, and Lane Departure Assist designed to help keep drivers safer. In particular, Lane Departure Assist and Lane Centering monitor lane markings and can help assist drivers with steering to avoid accidental drifting into another lane. The advanced ACC sensors can also recognize another driver approaching and adjust your vehicle’s placement within the lane to create a safer distance on all sides.

if the gunk was adding resistance to the circuit it would do that.... the microcomputer in the dash interprets the button presses as different resistance values, all along the same path, so it's not separate circuits for each button, just separate resistors.

Great to know, and always useful info from nappyjim! By the way, did you use your cruise control frequently? Just wondering whether the gunk build up "just happens" over time vs. frequent usage causes the gunk.

2002 - Cruise control button/lights?

  • Add to quote

First, does the cruise control button have a "click" type of engagement when you press the button? Mine just sort of pushes in and releases, unlike, say, the fog light button, and nothing seems to happen. Second, when you push the button to turn it on, does a light on the dash illuminate? I know the red light on the button should light up (I think), but mine currently doesn't, and I haven't checked that bulb yet. I pulled the switch and took it apart, but didn't check the red bulb to see if the filament was broken, as I ran out of Radio Shack replacement bulbs. I've tried to use the cruise control, just to see if it works, and so far, I'm having no luck.

Any input on this?

subaru cruise control buttons

I can't confirm on FS MY02 but I have an Impreza RS MY08 and an FXT MY 11 and on both of them the cruise control buttons push and release (no click) and a green light on the dash with "cruise" lights up. Hope this is of help to you

I looked at the owner's manual but it didn't show a "cruise" light for the gauge cluster. I used to have a 2001 Impreza 2.5RS, and I think it had one, but I couldn't say for sure. My Frankenstein '95 Impreza doesn't have cruise control, so I can't check it to compare. I will have to get some new bulbs for the illuminated part and the red "on" part of the switch, and go from there. I checked the fuse, and it was fine. Thanks for the input on the push and release (no click) part.

Definitely a momentary switch (no click). The top portion of the switch should illuminate in Amber. You can use a bulb from fog light switch, or use the switch illumination bulb for the indicator light as a test. The switch must be ON for the system to engage. Activation is the switch/stalk on the steering wheel. There is also a switch on the brake pedal, and one on the PRNDL to assure the system does not activate in other than drive, or when you hit the brakes.

Thanks. Stopped at Radio Shack today and got some replacement bulbs, then went home and pulled the switch. Both bulbs were shot, so I replaced both. The switch now illuminates, and the red indicator light comes on. I will have to check and see if the system actually works on the way to work in the morning.

subaru cruise control buttons

Did you get your cruise control to work yet? I just finished getting my switch lighting to work like it's supposed to and it sure makes life a lot easier.

Yeah, I did, the day after I posted that, actually; I just forgot to update this thread. I also realized that I wasn't using the lever properly, so it actually may have worked before, but now the lights work like they're supposed to.

My Forester is the first time for me to ever use cruise and I'm really liking it - both for watching my speed at times, and allowing me to move my legs around on long trips.

I typically don't use it (on any car), but wanted to have it working in case I want to use it.

My light doesn't work either, though the cruise control does. Could you tell me how to pull the switch and change the bulb? Thanks

Take out the plastic screw and the thing it goes into on the side of the lower dash panel, then remove the two metal screws at the bottom of the panel. One is right by the hood release, and the other is by the center console. After that, pull the panel loose, and you'll have access to the switches from behind. Unplug the switch, and work it out of the cutout with a sort of up and down motion while pushing it outward from the panel.

subaru cruise control buttons

Resolve yet? I just had a recent encounter similar to yours. I could press the "cruise" button and the light in the gauge displays but it would not engage when I set it. Found out it was a bad brake switch. After the fix (by the dealer - free as it was checked off as working prior to selling it to me), when I set the cruise, it shows SET under the CRUISE gauge display. Off course mine is a 2008 but it won't hurt to see if that's the case as well. Hope this helps somewhat.
