Japan introduces e-Visa for Indian tourists: From eligibility criteria to application process, here's a complete guide
Japan has streamlined its visa process for indian travellers with the introduction of evisas. here's your quick guide to the hassle-free application process..
Indian passport holders no longer need to carry a physical visa sticker to travel to Japan. From April 1, Japan began issuing eVisas to Indian travellers. The much-awaited Japan e-Visa programme allows anyone to apply for a visa electronically through Japan Visa Application Centres operated by VFS Global. This programme allows visitors to enter Japan for up to 90 days for tourism purposes.
Under the revised system, applicants must still submit their applications to the Visa Application Centres overseen by VFS Global, which is the same process as before. However, one notable change is in the way visas are issued. Instead of receiving traditional visa stickers affixed to their passports, successful applicants will now receive electronic visas. The e-Visa process requires travellers to present a 'visa issuance notice' on their mobile device upon arrival at the airport. It's important to note that internet access is required for this process. Any format other than a digital visa issuance notice, including PDFs, photos, screenshots or printed copies, will not be considered valid.
What are the eligibility criteria
Citizens and residents of the following countries and regions are eligible: Brazil, Taiwan, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, USA. Additionally, Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India are also included in the eligibility criteria. Residents of these countries or regions, with exceptions for those exempt from short-term visas, can apply for an eVisa through the Japan e-Visa website.
How to apply
Here's a step-by-step guide to the application process:
Step 1: To initiate the application process, individuals should access the official website of the Japan Visa Application Centre, managed by VFS Global, by visiting https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/jpn/.
Step 2: Choose the "Temporary Visitor Visa" option and review all visa requirements carefully. Download the application form, fill it out accurately, and print it. Ensure all fields are completed. Additionally, prepare photocopies of the required documents for the single-entry short-term tourism visa.
Step 3: Schedule an appointment to submit your application at the Visa Application Centre. Once booked, you'll receive a confirmation email for your appointment, which will include the letter of appointment.
Step 4: Submit your completed visa application form at the center during your appointment. Then, wait for an email notification informing you when your decision is ready for collection. You can track the progress of your visa application online using the reference number provided on your invoice or receipt. Approved applicants for the eVisa will receive an electronic visa instead of a physical visa sticker. However, travelers are required to show a "visa issuance notice" on their mobile devices upon arrival at the airport.
Step 5: At the airport check-in, display the "visa issuance notice" on your device. The travel agency will furnish a "Visa Issuance Notice" inclusive of a two-dimensional barcode. Scan the barcode using your device and input the required details to access the notice. Tap "Display" to view the electronic "visa issuance notice."
During the application process, individuals may be required to appear in person at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over the applicant's place of residence for an interview.

Japan launches e-Visas for Indian tourists. Here's how you can apply | DETAILS
The much-awaited Japan e-Visa programme was launched in India on April 1 and is valid for up to 90 days. The move aims to streamline the process of obtaining a visa to enable short-term travel from several countries to Japan.
The programme began in India on April 1. Under this e-Visa programme, Indian tourists no longer need to carry a physical passport to enter Japan. The programme is also available for travellers from Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The much-awaited Japan e-Visa programme can be availed through the Japan Visa Application centres operated by VFS Global. Under this revised system, tourists planning to visit Japan have to submit their applications to the Visa Application Centres, after which they will be able to receive electronic visas, thus removing the need to carry physical passport stickers.
How to apply Japan e-Visa?
Internet access is a must to file for an e-Visa for entering Japan. A digital 'visa issuance notice' must be presented to the authorities upon arrival at the airport, and any other format than that, including photos and screenshots, will not be considered valid for entry. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to avail an e-Visa for Japan.
- To initiate the process of applying for an e-Visa, individuals must first access the official website of the Japan Visa Application Centre, managed by VFS Global, through https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/jpn/ .
- From there on, individuals can choose the "Temporary Visitor Visa" option and review all requirements carefully. Tourists must download the application form and fill it out accurately before printing it. Correct documents must be provided by the individuals.
- Individuals can then schedule an appointment to submit their application at the Visa Application Centre. Once they have booked their appointment, they will receive an appointment confirmation email along with their letter of appointment.
- After the visa application form is submitted at the centre, the tourists will have to pay their application fee. After that, the tourists will have to wait for an email notification informing them of when the e-Visa is ready for collection. Approved applicants will receive an e-Visa instead of a physical visa. Individuals can also track their visa application status online using the reference number from the invoice or receipt issued by the centre.
- While checking in at the airport, individuals will be required to display a "visa issuance notice" from their mobile devices, provided by the travel agency in either printed or PDF forms. The notice can be displayed by scanning a two-dimensional barcode with their devices and entering the required information. A countdown timer shown at the top right indicates that the notice is valid.
During the application process, the tourists planning to visit Japan may be requested to appear in person at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over the place of the applicant's residence for an interview. By adhering to the stipulated criteria, Indian tourists can experience a seamless travel experience to Japan on a tourist e-Visa, valid for 90 days.

If you're applying from the above mentioned cities, you can book an appointment online here .
You'll need to register and then log in to select an available date and time.
Booking an appointment is free of cost. You can then reschedule or cancel if required.
Required Documents
Here’s a list of the required documents:
- Passport that is valid for at least another 3 months
- Recent photographs with white background (3.5cm X 4.5cm)
- Filled visa application form in your own handwriting. View the form here (Click on "Download Form")
- Covering letter written in one's own handwriting and signed.
Here's a sample letter that you can use:
- Original NOC / Leave Approval letter from Company if you're employed. (I submitted a contract letter since I was a contractor)
- Booked accommodations for the entire trip
- Daily itinerary. You can also use ChatGPT to create a custom one for you. You can use the below format for the itinerary:
- Applicant traveling to third country before and after traveling to japan need to submit third countries visa copy.
- Last 3 months attested bank statements. You have to visit your bank’s nearest branch and they’ll give you the sealed statements to you.
- Last 2 years ITRs
- Confirmed air tickets (round trip)
Refer to VFS's website here to check the updated requirements. You must also arrange the documents in the same order as outlined in Document Checklist.
Check for Covid requirements if any. When I traveled, they asked for a triple vaccination or a negative covid test. For some reason, VFS employees asked me to submit a NOC from my parents because I was self employed and unmarried. They said if I was married, then they would need my husband’s NOC.
I checked online but haven’t found this requirement mentioned anywhere so this pissed me off quite a bit!
Appointment Day
On the day of the appointment, arrive about 15 to 30 minutes early and wait for your turn.
Once you pass the security check, collect your token number from the respective room and wait for your turn to submit your documents. Make sure to collect token first on time or else they won’t assign you a token even if you’ve entered the office on time.
Once it’s your turn, submit your documents. The employee will check your documents, and will send you back if anything is missing!
Sometimes, they ask for documents that they haven’t even mentioned anywhere so that’s incredibly annoying. Unfortunately you can’t really do anything. Make sure to carry an address proof just in case and apply from the right center!
Fees & Processing Time
According to VFS:
"The timelines given by The Consulate General of Japan, Bengaluru for the processing of each application is minimum 06 working days from the day it is submitted at The Consulate General of Japan
Please note that this is an indicative processing time only. Processing time may increase or decrease at the discretion of the Consulate General of Japan, Bengaluru.
VFS Global is involved only in non-judgmental task of visa processing and does not play any role in processing the visa application as this is entirely the prerogative of the Consulate General of Japan, Bengaluru."
Having said this, I received my visa in about 10 days.
You can check this page for the updated fees .
You can opt in for passport delivery at your home for about Rs 500 or you can come and collect it from the office yourself. Once you pay the visa fee, VFS fee and courier, (you’re only allowed to submit the fee in cash), you are given a receipt.
Track Passport
You can track your passport online. It doesn’t really tell you the visa approval status but just at what stage your application is, at the consulate, processing or passport dispatched.
You only know the approval status once you have your passport back in your hands. If it's approved, you'll find a sticker visa inside!
Please note that the above is based on my experience with obtaining a Japan single entry tourist visa. Please take everything in this post as advise and do your own research before applying. I know it can be a stressful, but you should know that it's worth it!
