New mexico tourism is on its way to pre-pandemic tourism levels.

"We actually just broke our record number since the start of COVID-19, on July 2, when we saw about 13,800 passengers," Jonathan Small, a spokesperson for the Sunport, said.

The New Mexico tourism sector is seeing strides in the road to recovery as travel is picking up in the Land of Enchantment.

Forty-nine states across the country declared their independence from COVID-19 rules and are fully reopened as of this weekend.

"Nice to see everyone be cautious. Just being able to go back to travel and seeing new places," Matthew Swartz, a Michigan resident visiting New Mexico, said.

The vaccinations helped many people feel more comfortable traveling.

"It's great to go places again and see the ocean," Jeremy Mann, who flew back from Kauai, said.

Mann and his wife Renee Gannon took a month-long vacation after hunkering down during the pandemic.

"We didn't go anywhere until we were fully vaccinated," Mann said.

The couple is among the millions of Americans taking off as more people get vaccinated and states reopen. The TSA reports more than 2.1 million passengers went through their security checkpoints leading up to the holiday weekend.

"Our most recent seven-day average shows we're seeing around 12,700 passengers per day. Which is only down 22% for pre-pandemic numbers," Jonathan Small, a spokesperson for the Sunport International Airport, said.

Small added the Sunport is recovering from the pandemic impacts.

"We actually just broke our record number since the start of COVID-19, on July 2, when we saw about 13,800 passengers," Small said.

The New Mexico Tourism Department said travel numbers are doing much better since the start of summer.

"We're really on track to start reaching those pre-pandemic levels," Cody Johnson, a spokesperson for the New Mexico Tourism Department, said. "Hotel numbers have certainly been on a positive trajectory for a few months now."

The tourism department reports the state took a $3.5 billion dollar hit during the pandemic with travel restrictions. But now, it appears the page has turned and more people are choosing to visit New Mexico.

Visitors like Swartz are excited to explore the Land of Enchantment.

"Coming out to see Santa Fe, the museums, the plaza, all that great stuff," Swartz said.
