Learning the LIRR: An NYC Guide for Travelers

lirr

Running from Long Island to Manhattan, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the busiest commuter railroad on the continent. If you’re visiting New York City and plan to see Long Island, too, you’ll want to know all about the LIRR. As an NYC local, I’m here to help.

According to the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority), the LIRR is the oldest railroad in the country operating under its original name. Since it was originally chartered on April 24, 1834, the LIRR has served millions of New Yorkers. These trains transport over 300,000 people on any given weekday, and the system runs more than 700 trains.

Suffice it to say, these trains are busy, and if you plan to use them, you’ll want to be prepared. Read our guide to get the scoop.

How to purchase tickets

Long Island Rail Road

There are multiple lines of the LIRR that run throughout Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties. These trains can take you out to the Hamptons, to a concert at UBS Arena, and so many more places during your visit to New York City .

You may purchase your tickets from an MTA employee or a kiosk at one of the train stations. You can also use the MTA TrainTime app to purchase tickets directly on your phone. I like to use my phone so I can do it quickly and easily without having to deal with an unfamiliar machine or a person.

Local tip: While you can buy tickets on board the trains, they will be slightly more expensive. Buying in advance will save you some money!

Navigating peak and off-peak hours

LIRR

Peak tickets cost more money, so check the LIRR schedule to see if you’re traveling during peak or off-peak hours. The MTA charges peak fares during business rush hours on weekdays for trains scheduled to or from NYC terminals. Peak fares during LIRR business rush hours are:

  • 6-10 a.m. arriving in NYC
  • 4-8 p.m. departing from NYC

If you’re in New York for vacation and can adjust when you’re moving around in a more flexible way, try hopping on the LIRR during off-peak hours to save yourself money. Just know that the price can fluctuate.

To learn more about LIRR fares, check out the MTA website .

Where you can go on the LIRR

Long Island Rail Road

The LIRR can take you out to Long Island, obviously, which means you can get to the Hamptons pretty easily. While there, you can see the many lighthouses this beachy area has to offer. Spend a day sitting in the sand, if the weather’s nice, and browsing the boutiques.

Long Island is more than just the Hamptons, though. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Long Island Aquarium, especially great for families
  • Jones Beach State Park, with its 6.5 miles of sandy shoreline
  • Old Westbury Gardens, an early 20th-century mansion surrounded by 200 acres of landscaped grounds, lakes, and woods

Each of these can be found on Long Island. It’ll just take some navigating with the LIRR map and maybe some walking or buses.

Local tip: The LIRR will get you to and from the JFK airport (it’s technically on Long Island!), so you can plan to use one of these trains when you’re flying to NYC for your trip.

Which direction to travel on the LIRR to get to NYC

LIRR

Headed to NYC from Long Island aboard the LIRR? It’s easy to get there. Here are the steps if you’re on Long Island and going to New York City:

  • Choose Penn Station as your destination.
  • Wait for the train on the Westbound platform.
  • Get off at Penn Station (which is on 34th Street).

From there, you can explore all New York has to offer. Head uptown for Central Park and its many sights or head downtown and get on the boat to the Statue of Liberty and take a tour of history .

What about your return trip? If you’re leaving Penn Station and going to Long Island, then make sure you input the correct information into the kiosk or your app and wait on the Eastbound platform.

Keep your tickets

View this post on Instagram A post shared by MTA Long Island Rail Road 🚉 (@mtalirr)

Once you purchase your tickets, make sure you hold onto them! MTA employees may or may not ask for them while you’re on board the train. Though there are times you might ride the train without your tickets being checked, it’s better to have them than to be caught off guard and forced to pay an elevated fee on the train.

Have the schedule handy

Check out the MTA LIRR website for the latest schedules. You can also monitor the schedules and get alerts on the MTA app. If you’re in a station, look for the monitors that tell you which route is on which line and when it’s leaving.

Reading & Northern Railroad: Map, Roster, Excursions

logoad1.jpg

Last revised: October 10, 2023

By:  Adam Burns

The Reading and Northern, officially the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad (or RBM&N), is an eastern Pennsylvania Class II regional railroad which operates over 300 miles of predominantly ex-Reading Railroad trackage (although the company also operates lines owned by other fallen flags).

Due to the R&N operating lines steeped in the history of anthracite railroads of years past it has adopted a paint scheme and logo very similar to the railroad which makes up most of its system, the Reading.

Since the R&N's creation in the early 1980s as just a small short line connecting two Pennsylvanian towns near Reading it has grown nearly 300%.

Today it operates an efficient and profitable railroad being named the Regional Railroad Of The Year in 2002 by Railway Age . Today, the R&N continues to grow as it is reaping the benefits of the massive boom in Marcellus Shale drilling in eastern Pennsylvania.

The railroad's success continues to grow, an astounding achievement considering the former Reading, Jersey Central, and Lehigh Valley lines it inherited during the early 1990's had been left for dead.

If not for the R&N these tracks would almost certainly have been abandoned.  For the general public the regional continues to grow in popularity thanks to its successful excursions hosted between Reading and Jim Thorpe.

lire n.r. tours

The history of the Reading & Northern began humbly in 1983 when Conrail was looking to abandon a former Pennsylvania Railroad branch between Temple and Hamburg.

Perhaps most interesting is that while the R&N is now recognized for the large assortment of former Reading lines it operates, the company did not start out operating any of its former trackage.

In any event, Conrail, during its first decade of operation severely cutback the thousands and thousands of miles of lines it inherited from the numerous fallen flags making up its system, which included this 13-mile line near Reading.

lire n.r. tours

Before the branch could be ripped out, however, the state of Pennsylvania stepped in and purchased it. It then turned around and hired Andrew Muller, Jr. and a group of rail preservationists to operate the line as the Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad.

It wasn't until 1990 that the Reading & Northern gained its true Reading heritage when it purchased from Conrail 130 miles of the fallen flag's lines between Port Clinton and Tamaqua as well as all of its branch lines in Schuylkill County.

With the new acquisitions the RBM&N not only gained many new customers but also access to several area anthracite coal mines.

lire n.r. tours

With the renewed demand for coal, particularly clean coal, these branches today are quite profitable for the R&N and all remain in service.

The former Reading lines was just the beginning, however. In 1996 the R&N expanded again when it purchased from Conrail former Lehigh Valley trackage between Scranton, Lehighton, and Wilkes-Barre encompassing another 100 miles expansion.

While this provided the Reading and Northern Railroad with additional new customers perhaps most important was its new interchange partners gained including the Delaware-Lackawanna and Canadian Pacific.

lire n.r. tours

Throughout the rest of the 1990s the R&N saw no more additional expansions, save for the split of Conrail it had to weather with its new Class I interchange being the Norfolk Southern.

Interestingly, NS afforded the railroad even more business opportunities in the early 2000s.

lire n.r. tours

Additionally, around the same in 2002 both NS and Canadian Pacific entered into trackage rights agreements to use the R&N's former LV lines as a shortcut for freight traffic moving between the New York City area and Canada.

That same year the railroad was able to revive two abandoned bridges over the Lehigh River near Jim Thorpe to connect their northern and southern divisions.

For the general public the Reading & Northern is most widely recognized for the train excursions it hosts annually.

Following the railroad's debut it began hosting intermittent trips between Hamburg and Temple in 1990, which later expanded to other parts of its system that decade.

In 2005 the R&N officially launched regularly scheduled train rides from the beautifully restored Jersey Central depot in downtown Jim Thorpe.

The trips were operated by an R&N subsidiary, the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway with most excursions running to Reading and back.

On May 29, 2017, the railroad opened a newly built depot in Reading, known as the Reading Outer Station, to provide easier access for travelers departing or boarding at that location.

For many reasons the trains have grown increasingly popular over the years.

Not only are they just a few hours drive from several major metropolitan regions but also offer perks like:

  • Authentic steam locomotives
  • Streamlined diesel locomotives
  • Navigating beautiful stone-arch bridges (the Peacock Lock Viaduct in Reading)
  • Soaring over the 156-foot high Hometown High Bridge (constructed in 1881)
  • Enjoying a wide range of accommodations (such as dome service, on-board dining, open-air experiences, fall foliage trips, Christmas rides).

Please visit Reading & Northern's website for information regarding its excursion status .

After the project was completed the R&N operated a through route between Scranton and Reading.  Since the large route purchases the R&N completed in the 1990s it has not grown considerably in terms of route miles and today still owns a system of some 300+ miles.

lire n.r. tours

During the first decade of the 21st century the railroad focused on improving its infrastructure and overall business such as installing continuous welded rail (CWR) along various stretches of main line and purchasing its own maintenance-of-way equipment.

Today, traffic continues to grow on the Reading & Northern and current customers appear to be very happy with the service the railroad provides.

Interchange Partners

Their interchange partners currently include Norfolk Southern, Canadian Pacific, Delaware-Lackawanna, Lehigh Railway, Luzerne & Susquehanna Railroad, and the Shamokin Valley Railroad.

As public and customer relations grew, in 2005 the railroad branched out with the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway , which runs every weekend between May and December from Jim Thorpe.

The star of the tourist railroad is the railroad's recently rehabbed 4-6-2 Pacific Type steam locomotive, #425, painted in a beautiful blue and gold livery.

Best Time to Visit Loire Valley

The Loire Valley sits right in the center of France, dividing north and south, so it gets relatively hot in summer (around 25°C in July) and cold in winter (around 7°C in January).

The best time to visit Loire Valley to have good weather is from April to October. Spring is a great time to visit the chateaux’s gardens, all in full bloom.

The best seasons for outdoor activities are spring and autumn. The shoulder seasons in the Loire Valley are perfect for walking and cycling.

The months of July and August see the crowds in the Loire Valley, especially around the main sites. For the best accommodation and prices, it will be key to book well in advance. Also, we recommend buying skip-the-line tickets online in advance for the main Châteaux of the Loire Valley.

The season to avoid for a Loire Valley trip is winter. The winter months see rain and cooler temperatures, and some châteaux may be closed.

How Many Days in Loire Valley

The Loire Valley has so many things to see and do that you could spend all your French holiday in this region.

To get the most out of the Loire Valley, we recommend a minimum of 3 full days, but ideally 5-to 6 days. 1. Orléans

Orléans is the capital of the Centre-Val-de Loire region . Orléans is famous as the city of  Jeanne d’Arc , a French heroine who, on the 8th of May 1429, played a decisive role in the town’s liberation from the occupying English.

Over recent years, this dynamic city has engaged in major conservation projects to reveal all its former splendor. Orléans is a good base to explore the medieval towns of Beaugency, Meung-sur-Loire, and the castles of Chambord and Cheverny.

Blois  is a beautiful city with remarkable architectural and cultural heritage. Its Old Town is very compact, and you can easily explore it on foot. In Blois, don’t miss visiting the  Château de Blois , the Loire’s finest in-town château and home to seven French Kings!

Blois is a good base to explore the medieval town of Beaugency, the city of Amboise with its Royal Castle and the Clos de Lucé, and the castles of Chambord, Cheverny, Chaumont sur Loire, and Chenonceau.

Tours is a historic city with a rich heritage. Tours was the capital of the French kingdom, even if for a short time. It is also a student city, with a lively city center populated by many restaurants and bars that pop up their terraces outside as soon as the beautiful days arrive.

Tours is an excellent base to explore the medieval towns of Chinon, and Langeais, the city of Amboise with its Royal Castle and the Clos de Lucé, and the castles of Chenonceau, Azay-le-Rideau, and Villandry.

Sitting on the River Loire banks, in the region of Pays-de-la-Loire, the city of  Saumur  has a pretty medieval Old Town to explore crowned by a fairytale medieval castle and plenty to see and do.

Saumur is a good base to explore the medieval towns of Chinon and Langeais, the city of Angers with its imposing medieval castle, the magnificent Abbey of Fontevraud – the burial place of the Plantagenets in France – and the castles of Azay-le-Rideau, and Villandry.

Taste the Wines of the Loire Valley

Wine of Loire Valley, France

If you like French wine , we recommend visiting one or two wineries in the Loire Valley Wine Region , where you’ll learn about the history of the land and get to taste several local wines, sometimes paired with delicious cheeses.

The Loire Valley is one of the largest wine regions in France. If you are looking for lighter wines, the wines of Loire Valley are right up your alley. There are great selections of lighter red wines, delicate, fruity white wines, sweet roses, and a large production of sparkling wines (named Crémants de Loire).

The Loire Valley Wine Region has different production zones. The production area closest to the main Châteaux of the Loire Valley is Touraine , located around the city of Tours.

East of Tours, the production is focused on white wines from Chenin grape variety (e.g. AOC Vouvray). West of Tours, is the land of red wines from Cabernet Franc grape variety (e.g. AOC Chinon, AOC Borgueil). The AOC Touraine produces light wines in three colors (white, red, rosé).

All these Loire Valley wineries offer top-rated tours and tastings in French and English. A visit to these wineries is also a great opportunity to buy excellent wines directly from the producers. Book your visit online in advance.

  • Domaine Thierry Cosme  – AOC Vouvray
  • Domaine Les Pièrres d’Aurèle  – AOC Touraine
  • Domaine Cahterine et Michel Langlois  – AOC Pouilly Fumé
  • Domaine Jean-Marc et Mathieu Crochet  – AOC Sancerre

If you don’t have a car, here are some suggestions for wine day tours in the Loire Valley:

  • Loire Valley Wine Tasting Tour with Private Driver (departs from Tours and Amboise)
  • Loire Valley Wine Tour in Vouvray and Montlouis (departs from Tours)
  • Caves Ambacia, Tour and Wine Tasting (in Amboise, no transportation)

Other Fun Things to Do in the Loire Valley, France

Of course, the Loire Valley offers much more than sightseeing. If you are visiting the Loire Valley for more than two or three days, consider one of these fun activities for adventure lovers:

1. See the Loire Valley Castles from Other Points of View

Hot-Air Balloon Ride - Châteaux de la Loire

A visit to the interior of the Châteaux of the Loire Valley is a must, but it’s worth viewing the Castles from other perspectives for more magnificent views.

Take a boat trip to see the Château de Chenonceau from the water . The Canoë Company  offers different boat tours that are guided or self-guided, with different itineraries.

You can also admire the Châteaux de Chenonceau (and the Loire Valley) from a hot-air balloon with  France Montgolfières . Our trip with them over Fontainebleau was an incredible experience that we recommend. You can check our review  here .

Another unique way to explore the Châteaux of the Loire Valley is a micro flight with a professional pilot . Flights last from 30 min to 1,5 hrs, depending on the chosen option. The departure point is 40km from Tours, and you will be able to admire the Châteaux de Chenonceau, Loches, Chaumont, and Amboise.

2. La Loire à Vélo (The Loire Valley by Bike)

  • Fish  – Commonly served fish in this region include pike perch/zander (sandre), bream (brème), and eels (anguilles). They are usually served with a butter sauce (beurre blanc)
  • Goat Cheese  (chèvre) such as Saint Maure, Pouligny-St-Pierre, Selles-sur-Cher and Crottin de Chavignol
  • Rillettes  – usually made using pork, it’s a textured pâté and served spread on bread
  • Touraine Rillons  (Rillons de Touraine) – slow-cooked pork belly cubes
  • Caramelized Apple pie  (Tarte Tatin) – this famous dessert comes from this region, and more specifically from Sologne

4. Shopping

Most of the Châteaux open to visitors have impressive souvenir shops with interesting history books and medieval-related merchandise.

If you take a wine tour, don’t miss the opportunity to buy a couple of your favorite bottles. Prices are always cheaper than in the wine shops in the city.

Look for the local markets for regional produce, cheese, rillettes, and local sweets.

Tours by LIR Shuttle

LIR Shuttle operates tours that capture the essence of what Costa Rica’s northwest region has to offer. Visit this page often as we always look to add experiences that will enhance your Costa Rica vacation.

Why book tours with us?

Choosing what activities to do while in Costa Rica can be overwhelming. There are many options and, to be honest, all of them look like fun to us, so we understand why it can be challenging to choose what to do. That’s why we focused on tours that will encapsulate the essence of what this region of Costa Rica has to offer. We are convinced that the experiences we provide will be most fulfilling.

Additionally, all our tours are private . That means only your party will ride in our van with our guide. This will guarantee a personalized experience that larger tour operators struggle to match. Want to stay a little longer? Not a problem. Wish to leave earlier to be at your hotel for dinner? We can do that as well.

Finally, we don’t sell or recommend tours based on commission. Our main objective is to offer the best experience possible for your money. Ultimately, a slight price difference can make the difference between a great tour day and an average one.

Rincon de La Vieja Day Adventure

The first destination is just outside the Rincon de La Vieja Volcano National Park amidst a transitional dry-rain forest environment. It combines horseback riding, river tubing, and zip lines with the soothing and relaxing hot springs and volcanic mud baths. This tour can be customized to offer only the desired adventure or relaxation part.

Horseback Riding

Bijagua Sloths and Nature

The second destination takes you further inland to an area near the beautiful Tenorio Volcano National Park. With its lush tropical rainforest ecosystem, this area is home to many tropical plants, birds, mammals, and amphibian species. Most notoriously, the three-toed sloth and the poison dart frogs. For a better chance to see these forest dwellers, we visit a wildlife refuge where the chances of seeing them are exponentially higher than in the wild.

Really Easy Day Trips By Train Around The Loire Valley From Tours, France

by Sarah Wilson | Jan 21, 2023 | Europe , France , Travel | 2 comments

Last Updated on: 8th August 2023, 08:41 am

Tours

Thanks to its central location and excellent train connections to the nearby towns, Tours makes an ideal base to explore the Loire Valley and discover the chateaux of Loire.

But not only is it a great base, the town of Tours itself is also beautiful to explore.

And with so many bars and restaurants, it’s a lovely place to return to in the evening for a great meal after a long day of exploring.

Place Plumereau

Half Timbered Houses around Place Plumereau Tours

The Place Plumereau, surrounded by gorgeous 15th-century half-timbered houses, is located in the heart of the historic centre of Tours. It’s a popular place to sit and watch the world go by!

And off the square are all sorts of wonderful cobbled stone streets with wonderfully quirky shops and cafes to discover.

Saint-Gatien Cathedral

The front of Tours Gothic Cathedral

Tours Cathedral is dedicated to the first bishop of Tours – Saint Gatianus. The gothic style cathedral was built between 1170 and 1547.

The cathedral has some beautiful stained glass windows.

The tombs of Anne de Bretagne and Charles VII’s children are inside the cathedral.

And a chapel dedicated to Joan of Arc, who met with Charles VII in Tours.

Recommended Restaurants In Tours

You are spoilt for choice in Tours, and unlike many French towns, there are plenty of options if you don’t fancy French food. The Lebanese restaurant Restaurant Le Beyrouth was really good.

Here are a few of my favourites:

Le Turon

Au Martin Bleu

Le Marche Gourmand

Restaurant Le Beyrouth

Easy Day Trips From Tours By Train

Amboise .

The town of Amboise is gorgeous. If you only plan to visit one town in the Loire Valley, go here.

Enjoy the view of Amboise from Île d’Or.

lire n.r. tours

Walking from the train station into Amboise, you will cross the Pont du Maréchal Leclerc Bridge and the L’Île d’Or (Gold Island).

From the bridge and the island, you get really lovely views of the Château Royal d’Amboise and the town.

The island has a few bars and cafes and is a nice neighbourhood to wander around.

Walk around Amboise town.

As with all medieval towns, the best part is just leisurely wandering around. Step away from the main streets and explore the back roads. Enjoy a coffee or something stronger at one of the many street-side cafes.

Tour de l’Horloge (The Clock Tower)

One of the most distinctive buildings in Amboise, apart from the chateaus, is the 15th-century clock tower. It’s a nice photo stop as you explore the town.

It is possible to climb the tower, but the views are better from the Château Royal d’Amboise.

Château Royal d’Amboise

Château Royal d’Amboise from the side

The impressive Château Royal d’Amboise presiding high over the town of Amboise is the town’s number one attraction.

Leonardo Da Vinci is buried here in the Chapel of Saint Hubert. The chapel, however, is currently being renovated.

The château is well worth a visit, as are the beautiful formal gardens.

Allow yourself a couple of hours to explore here.

Opening Hours

Opening hours vary throughout the year. Check here for up-to-date information about visiting Château Royal d’Amboise .

Château du Clos Lucé

The red four poster bed belonging to Leonardo da Vinci

I highly recommend visiting Château du Clos Lucé; it was really interesting. This château is where Leonardo da Vinci lived and worked for the last three years of his life.

There’s also an exhibition here of Da Vinci’s inventions which was fascinating.

The château and the gardens are beautiful to explore, so do set aside a couple of hours for this one.

Buy your entrance ticket in advance to save time at the ticket office.

Opening hours vary throughout the year. Check here for up-to-date information about visiting Château du Clos Lucé.

Château Gaillard

If you haven’t had your fill of chateaus yet, there is one more in town – Château Gaillard. This one is just a few minutes’ walk away from Clos Lucé. It was built at the end of the 15th century as a Royal residence for Charles VIII.

I have to confess; I only got as far as the entrance and then thought, I’ve seen enough chateaus today; I’m off for a glass of wine.

However the grounds looked beautiful from the outside, but the castle was hidden, so if you visit, do let me know what I missed out on in the comments.

The path leading to Château Gaillard in Amboise - a great day trip from Tours

Opening hours vary throughout the year. Check here for up-to-date information about visiting Château Gaillard.

Caves Ambacia

Loire Valley is famous for its wines. And a great place to sample some local wines is at the Caves Ambacia in Amboise.

Caves Ambacia is about a fifteen-minute walk from the town centre. Do note that this winery is where wine is stored; it does not have a vineyard.

The wine cellars are over 500 years old and were hand carved directly from the cliff face.

You can do a self-guided visit for free or for €18 per person enjoy a tour and wine tasting. The wine-tasting tour is 75 minutes.

Recommended Restaurant In Amboise

Recommended lunch spot in Amboise – Le Parvis.

Love Amboise And Want To Stay Longer?

Check out these hotel deals.

I have to admit I think I preferred Amboise to Tours, so why did I continue to stay in Tours? Because I was house-sitting in Tours and was looking after a gorgeously cute cat.

How To Get To Amboise By Train From Tours

The train from Tours to Amboise takes around 15-20 minutes and can be bought in advance through SNCF .

From the train station, it’s a twenty-minute walk into Amboise. It’s well signposted, just head towards the Loire River. Once you’ve crossed the river, you’re there.

Blois is another picturesque small city with medieval cobblestone streets, a magnificent castle, half-timbered burghers’ houses, and an impressive Gothic cathedral!

The Tourist Office close to the chateau is very helpful and will provide maps (I love paper maps) and give suggestions on what to see and do in the city.

Walking around the Old Town

Even though it was raining, which meant an awful lot of coffee stops when I was there, Blois, with its many picturesque cobbled stone alleys and narrow streets, is a delight to explore.

Château Royal de Blois

lire n.r. tours

The Château Royal de Blois was built between the 13th and 17th centuries. The chateau was once home to the powerful Counts of Blois before becoming a royal residence during the reign of Louis XII in the 15th century. During the following centuries, seven kings and ten queens of France lived here, each adding their own style to the architecture of the building.

Allow around an hour and a half to explore the château.

Opening hours vary throughout the year. Check here for up-to-date information about visiting Château Royal de Blois.

House of Magic (Maison de la Magie)

lire n.r. tours

Opposite the Château Royal is the Maison de la Magie , a unique museum devoted entirely to magic.

Much of the exhibition is dedicated to Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin, a famous French magician born in Blois. Harry Houdini based his stage name on this magician.

Escalier Denis Papin

lire n.r. tours

The best way to reach the Cathedral of Saint-Louis is via the stairway of Denis Papin.

Since the 19th century, this iconic stairway has connected the upper and lower part of the town. At its top is a statue of Denis Papin , a famous inventor from Blois.

Every year since 2013, the 120 steps of the staircase have been decorated in giant artwork, the theme depending on what’s happening in town, although have no idea what this painting is about!

Cathedral of Saint-Louis

Gothic-style Cathedral of Saint-Louis in Blois

Built in 1697, the late Gothic-style Cathedral of Saint-Louis (Cathédrale Saint-Louis) is the seat of the bishop of Blois. Built over a 10th-century church dedicated to Saint Solenne, it’s still possible to see the remains of the older church in the crypt.

Recommended Restaurant In Blois

Recommended lunch spot in Blois – Le Petit Honfleur

Love Blois And Decided To Stay Longer?

How to get to blois by train from tours .

Trains from Tours take around 45 minutes to Blois-Chambord Station. Then it’s a ten-minute walk into town. Train tickets can be booked in advance through SNCF.

From April through to November, a shuttle bus runs from the station to Chateau Chambord, one of the most famous chateaus in the Loire Valley.

I was in Blois on a rainy December day, so I didn’t make it there on this occasion.

Chateau de Chenonceau

lire n.r. tours

The Chateau de Chenonceau is just stunning. If you only see one château during your time in the Loire Valley, make it this one.

Also known as ‘the ladies’ chateau’ as throughout its history, it has been the ladies who have most influenced its design.

It’s the second most-visited castle in France after Versailles. So, do get there early to avoid the crowds.

The setting across the river is just so picturesque. So give yourself plenty of time to take photos.

To avoid the queues at the entrance, I highly recommend buying your ticket in advance.

Apart from the chateau and the gardens, there is not that much else to see in the immediate vicinity. The village of Chenonceaux is just on the other side of the train track, but there seems only to be a few fancy restaurants and the tourist office there.

Opening Hours

Opening hours vary throughout the year. Check here for up-to-date information about visiting Château de Chenonceau.

Recommended Restaurant In Chenonceaux

Recommended lunch spot in Blois – Auberge du Bon Laboureu r, a fancy Michelin-star restaurant.

It looked terrific but, sadly, way over my budget. Instead, I opted for a simple Croque monsieur from the local bakery. But if I had a tad more money, I would have gone.

Chenonceau or Chenonceaux ?

The chateau is Chenonceau, and the village is Chenonceaux.

Love Chenonceaux and decided to stay longer?

How to get to chateau de chenonceau by train from tours .

The train from Tours to Chenonceaux takes around 30 minutes. On arrival, you will need to cross the train track, and the chateau is just a short walk away.

Train tickets can be booked in advance through SNCF.

How To Get To Loire Valley From Paris By Train

The best way to get to the Loire Valley by train is to take the TGV from Paris Montparnasse to St Pierre des Corps. The journey time takes around one hour.

From St Pierre des Corps to Tours, regular trains take just five minutes to get to Tours. Or take a local bus from just outside the station.

If you don’t have much luggage, it’s a pleasant 25-minute stroll into Tours.

Train tickets from Paris to Tours can be booked in advance through SNCF.

Easy As ABC

So as you see, exploring Amboise, Boise and Chenonceau as day trips from Tours by train is easy.

Short On Time? It’s Possible To Visit The Loire Valley As A Day Trip From Paris.

If time is short, it’s possible to visit the chateaus of the Loire Valley as a day trip from Paris.

Linda (LD Holland)

It was very long ago but I have great memories of touring around the Loire Valley. And it has been on my travel wish list for a return visit. I like the idea of finding a base like Tours to day trip from. I would certainly head out to see the chateaux in the area. But the small towns look charming too.

Mercato - PSG : Le transfert de Mbappé fait halluciner Riolo

lire n.r. tours

« Quand tu as Vinicius, que tu as Rodrygo, que tu as Jude Bellingham...

Al-Khelaïfi a "planté" Laporta, lance Sport
