Metallica Kicks Off M72 World Tour: Set List and Videos

Metallica kicked off their M72 World Tour  at Amsterdam's Johan Cruyff Arena on Thursday, beginning a sprawling road trip that will run through late 2024.

You can see the set list and videos from the performance below.

The metal giants kicked off their 16-song set with "Orion" — their first time using the  Master of Puppets instrumental as a show opener since 2011, according to setlist.fm . Other mainstays such as "Master of Puppets," "Battery," "Fade to Black," "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Sad but True" also appeared.

Several classic songs were notably omitted on opening night, including "Enter Sandman" and "One" (the band played no tracks off  ... And Justice for All ). Metallica is playing two shows in each city on this tour, changing set lists and opening acts each night to create a "No Repeat Weekend," so those songs could still appear at their next show.

The band also played three songs off its new album  72 Seasons : "Lux Æterna" and the live debuts of "Screaming Suicide" and "Sleepwalk My Life Away." Metallica released their 11th album two weeks ago, marking their first full-length since 2016's  Hardwired ... to Self-Destruct . The LP debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, ending a chart-topping streak that dated back to their 1991 self-titled album .

James Hetfield described the album's concept in an official statement: "Seventy-two seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told 'who we are' by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry."

What Has 500 Speakers, 87 Trucks and 2 Nights of No Repeats? Enter Metallica’s ‘M72’ Tour

How the band is getting most of its fans to buy tickets to two shows in a row — and bringing them closer to the action than ever.

By Robert Levine

Robert Levine

Metallica

HAMBURG, GERMANY — The pre-concert VIP tour of Metallica ‘s M72 stadium staging is something of a show in itself.

A few hours before the first of two “no repeat” weekend Metallica concerts — where the band plays different songs every night — on May 26, Jon-Michael Marino , a member of the band’s management team is walking the floor of the Volksparkstadion. It is set up for the band’s performance with a giant ring-shaped stage, the center of which will be a fan-filled “Snake Pit,” and eight monolithic towers of monitors and speakers. Each of the towers is anchored by a raised platform that doubles as VIP seating, with eight folding chairs decorated with the black-and-yellow color scheme of the band’s new album, 72 Seasons .

Metallica

The platforms are needed to anchor the towers — which weigh in at 11 tons without the bases, Marino says — so the band’s team figured they might as well put seats there, too. For a fee of $7,272 — the price a deliberate echo of the album title — fans can reserve the entire platform for both nights, complete with a cooler full of drinks and some other bonuses, as what the band calls an “enhanced experience.” The platforms are about half as high as the stage, so “you’re right in front of them,” Marino says, meaning the band. “You feel like maybe you should put your phone away.”

Metallica

“We try to do something a little different every time we go out,” says Cliff Burnstein , co-founder of the management Q Prime, which has managed Metallica for decades. Metallica has already done arena tours in the round, so it wanted to try doing the same thing in stadiums. But the band’s team felt that the normal setup – a circular stage in the center of a football field, would create too much distance between the group and its audience.

James Hetfield

Metallica Singer James Hetfield Visits Wounded Ukrainian Soldiers in Hospital

“I was that kid who used to sit in the last row, so I thought, how do you make this better,” remembers Dan Braun , the band’s creative director and scenic and production designer. (Braun, who has worked for the band for three decades jokes he “grew up in that hotbed of the entertainment business: Milwaukee, Wisconsin.”) “You move the stage closer to the crowd” — hence the ring, which has fans inside and out – “and you create twice as many front-row seats.”

That requires a production that travels in 87 trucks — 45 for the band and its setup, plus two groups of 21 each for the steel stage and towers. Loading in and building the stage and towers takes several days, so while the band uses one setup, the other leapfrogs it to the next city on the tour. (There are 130 people in the band’s crew along, plus 40 steelworkers, local hires and truck drivers.)

Metallica

The load-in is so complicated and expensive that it creates an incentive to play two shows in each venue. “Playing a stadium is so expensive production-wise,” Burnstein says. “The value of doing two shows is there’s only one set-up and load-out, so we’re basically partnering with ourselves to lower the cost.”

Doing pairs of concerts in each city with a pledge to not repeat the same songs, an idea Braun says came from frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, encourages fans to see both shows. “We know from past experience that people will travel for a Metallica show,” Burnstein says — and many fans seem just as interested in traveling for two. (The Hamburg show was packed with fans who would be back two days later, and a few planned to see the band in Munich next year.) Since the band will only play 22 cities in 2023 and 2024, many fans will have to come to them.

Brantley Gilbert and Noah Henson

Are You Ready for the ‘Country Metal’ Sound? Rock’s Revival Takes Rural Route

At first, the band only sold tickets to both shows together, for about 20% less than it would cost to buy both separately, and Burnstein says that between 80% and 90% of fans at each concert will attend both shows. (Fans who want more can buy one of the band’s “I Disappear” passes , different versions of which allow entry to all the shows the band plays on one continent for a year, two continents for a year, or two continents for two years.)

“A Metallica show is half-band and half-audience,” says Braun, who has thought a lot about how the group and the crowd amplifies one another’s energy. “If the band has a better experience, it’s better for the audience. If the audience has a great experience, it’s better for the band. Anything that gets in the way of that is bad.” To him, the key to the production isn’t the scale but the way it can bring fans closer to the action – to give a stadium the immediacy of a smaller room. “I like to challenge the cliches of Metallica,” which he describes as not just a great metal group but a great rock band. “They’re great entertainment,” he says. “The object is to give them the best platform to interact.”

There’s also a desire to make the show memorable — in this case, enough to see twice. “Once you raise the bar to where it is, how do you keep doing better,” says John Zajonc , known as Lug, who has worked for the band on and off for three decades and helps run the tour logistics. “The scale is massive.”

Where to buy Metallica tickets

You can buy original tickets to Metallica's 2023-2024 concert tour through Ticketmaster, though the available quantity is limited. Additionally, standard original tickets on Ticketmaster are typically more expensive than those available through verified resale platforms such as StubHub and Vivid Seats .

The prices for standard tickets at Metallica's M72 World Tour range from about $20 on the lower end to $480 for the final date of the year in December in Inglewood.

How much are Metallica tickets?

The cost of an original concert ticket to Metallica's remaining dates has dropped significantly for the reamining dates in the US, with prices starting at $16, and going up to around $60 for the cheapest dates. Prices for Mexico City dates are higher, starting around $60-$180. While some are still available through Ticketmaster, the price of a ticket varies by date and location.

Various VIP packages for Metallica's tour come at a higher price, including the "Nothing Else Matters" Snake Pit Experience, "Moth Into Flame" Snake Pit Experience, "One" Enhanced Experience, "Seek & Destroy" Reserved Package, and "Frantic" Early Entry GA Package. An example of one of the cheapest VIP packages begins at $349 for the "Frantic" package and $399 for the "Seek & Destroy" package on September 1 in Seattle, Washington.

Original prices typically come in higher than resale prices for Metallica concerts. Many of the cheaper tickets are verified resales or originals to nearer tour dates, so you might find the best prices when it gets closer to the concert date.

The Metallica concert series then moves back to North America for the fourth and final leg, which includes six international shows: Two will be held in Edmonton, Canada, in August 2024, with the band taking their final bow of the entire M72 World Tour after their four shows in Mexico City, Mexico in September 2024.

Metallica’s ‘Minneapolis Takeover’ concerts are now available as live recordings

Would anyone want to buy live tracks from the Vikings’ murky-sounding venue? Metallicats probably would.

By Chris Riemenschneider

Less than a month later, Metallica is now selling live recordings of its two “Minneapolis Takeover” concerts at U.S. Bank Stadium in August.

Each of the metal vets’ high-impact two-hour performances on the Minnesota Vikings’ field can be bought as two-CD sets via livemetallica.com . They’re priced $25 apiece or $40 for both. Digital downloads of the sets are also available in the same price range.

Metallica is offering live recordings from all the stops on its M72 Tour, another way the band modeled the weekend-long affairs after similar marathons by fellow San Francisco rock legends the Grateful Dead. Only Minneapolis, however, got to hear guitarist Kirk Hammett sing the “Mary Tyler Moore Show” TV theme. Lucky us.

Would someone really ever want to buy a live recording from U.S. Bank Stadium, where the acoustics have an even worse reputation than the “St. Anger” album? If anyone, it’d probably be Metallica fans.

Per reviews of the shows , the thrashy quartet had two of the better-sounding concerts in the NFL stadium’s eight-year history — a feat likely helped by the band’s familiarity with the vast space (it previously played there in 2016), and by these shows’ in-the-round stage setup, which filled seats all around the venue instead of leaving empty sections. Also, the recordings come off the soundboard, so they are less impacted by the sonic issues heard around the room.

Fans can go to the download section of livemetallica.com to sample the Minneapolis live tracks before purchasing the sets, from opening song “Creeping Death” on Night 1 to the finale “Enter Sandman” on Night 2.
