Travel tie cases protect your ties from the rigors of travel, ensuring they arrive in the same ironed state in which you packed them. Deciding to buy a travel tie case is the easy part; picking out the right one for you — that’s where it gets tricky, especially if you're a first-time buyer.

There are two main types of tie case to choose from:

A cylinder travel tie case is a compact cylindrical cases that can generally fit a single standard-sized tie or a couple of skinny ties. While these cases may not be sufficient for a long trip, they're great for overnight stays or for people who prefer not to don their tie before they get to the office. In some cases, they’re enough to slip into a pocket.

A portfolio travel tie case is essential for trips where you need a different tie every day. These large rectangular cases have space for four to eight ties. In addition, lots of models can hold cufflinks, tie clips, and other useful accessories. While they're larger than cylinder cases, they're still compact enough to fit in a carry-on bag.

Travel tie case features

The capacity of a travel tie case refers to the number of ties you can fit inside. Cylinder tie cases can only hold one or two ties, depending on the size, while the majority of portfolio tie cases typically hold six ties, with some holding even more. Only you know the number of ties you need to travel with, so select a travel case with an appropriate capacity.  

Another important factor is the material that your travel tie case is made from. Common choices include leather, faux leather, and nylon.

Leather travel tie cases have a classic, professional appearance and are hard-wearing. Real leather cases are expensive, however, and some people avoid using leather for religious or ethical reasons.

Faux leather, also known as vegan leather, is a more affordable, cruelty-free alternative to real leather. Not all faux leather is created equal, however. Some is just as durable and long-lasting as real leather, but cheap faux leather can damage easily.

Nylon might not be the most high-end material, but it's tough and durable, with a wallet-friendly price tag. Plus, there's something to be said for going the inexpensive and functional route. This might be an item whose appearance you don’t care about.

Since the majority of people use travel tie cases for business trips, conservative color options abound. Black, brown, navy blue, and gray are commonplace, sometimes with a two-tone effect or detailing in a second color. If you're looking for something a bit bolder or snazzier, you might have to search far and wide. When it comes to travel tie cases, plain, sensible colors are the standard.

Closure type

Cylinder cases usually either have a snap fastening or a magnetic closure . In this case, a snap is the superior option. Weak magnetic closures can easily slip open and your tie could fall out.

Portfolio travel tie cases usually close with a zipper all the way around three sides. Portfolio cases can also feature snap or elastic band closures, but these don't seal up all three open sides of the case, so dirt or debris could work its way inside.

Cylinder tie cases generally cost around $10 to $15.

Basic nylon and cheap faux leather options are usually priced between $10 and $15.

Your typical faux leather and high quality nylon models cost roughly $20 to $30.

High-end faux leather and real leather travel tie cases cost somewhere between $30 and $60.

Choose a travel tie case that's just the right size. You'll be traveling with it, after all, so you don't want it to take up too much luggage space. It should be large enough to hold all the ties you'll need for your trip.

Mens' neckwear, 1800 to 1899

This article is an extension of two larger Hickory Lane projects: Golf Fashion for Female Golfers and Spectators, 1800–1899 and Golf Fashion for Male Golfers and Spectators, 1800–1899 . These are in-depth, illustrated articles created to help featherie and gutty golfers pull together era-appropriate clothing. Each decade has its own write-up, and each write-up offers specifics on everything from hats to shoes and every piece of clothing in between.

Neckwear is an easy and inexpensive way to give your historic golf outfit just the right flair. It’s easy to replicate with modern materials, and you can even purchase some decade-specific ties and cravats online on sites like Historical Emporium . The advice offered here will focus on the proper neckwear for the end of the featherie era and the length of the gutty era (approximately 1800–1899).

1800–1820: The linen or silk cravat reigned during this period. It was a style available to different classes of people, as it is simply a triangle of muslin (ideally starched), folded into a band on the diagonal, centered on the front of the neck, wrapped around to the back of the neck, then around to the front again, where it is tied in any number of ways. The highly starched and intricately knotted cravat was the style for the upper crust.

A stock (below), a pre-folded or pre-tied strip of cloth that closes in the back with a buckle or a hook-and-eye, was a ready-made substitute. Sometimes stocks also had pre-tied bows attached to them.

Early 1800s stock

White cravats and stocks were worn over tall, stiff collars during this period. Black or sometimes colored neckwear became more common. A man’s selection of knot, color, and fabric pattern became a means of self-expression.

Cravats could be tied in many different ways.

How do you tie the perfect cravat? There are many tutorials on YouTube, or go old school and read The Art of Tying the Cravat , published in 1828, which shares 32 different styles. (The author’s names are Baron Emile de l’Empesé, Conte della Salda, and H. LeBlanc, which translate, respectively, to Baron Starch, Count Starched, and H. White—a cheeky team indeed.)

1830s neckwear

1830s: The high-collared jackets popular at this time hid large and complicated cravats. So new styles of neckwear started to emerge: the bow tie, scarves and neckerchiefs (more associated with working classes—a square of fabric folded into a triangle and tied in a variety of ways; this tied style emerges in golf fashion again at the end of the century), the ascot, and the four-in-hand or long tie. Some cravats were more like tubes with no bow or knot in front, while others were tied in some version of a bow. Neckwear switched from white to black or colors for daywear.

Also new at this time was the detachable collar, which allowed one's collar to be highly starched while the body of your shirt could remain more comfortable. Styles and shapes of these collars were myriad, which gave wearers even more options.

1840s neckwear

1840s: White neckwear was now reserved for evening wear, while black or colored/patterned neckwear was common for daytime. Collars were upstanding, usually with the front tips folded down. The neckband was narrower, but the bow or knot was very large. A scarf could be knotted loosely and fitted into the opening of the waistcoat and fixed with a pin. Very large, flat, and horizontal bow ties were popular.

1850s neckwear

1850s: During this decade, tall, stiff collars lost height; softer, turned down collars began to emerge. While a cravat/stickpin combo or a large bow tie were still popular choices, a longer vertical tie had become popular attire, especially for leisure/sporting activities. These ties were practical because they stayed in place and didn’t restrict movement. Bow ties became smaller by the end of the decade.

1860s: Starched shirt collars were lower still and sometimes turned down in the front. Working men would have worn a banded collar, club collar, or rounded collar white shirt. Cravats were now made from a narrow band of fabric, usually less than an inch wide. These were tied in front as a small, flat bow, or knotted and fixed with a pin. Longer neckties were also popular.

1870s neckwear examples

1870s: Mass production of cloth and clothing meant that ready-made clothing of all types was much more available and affordable. Upstanding collars were low, and many men wore collars that folded over like that of a modern men's dress shirt. The four-in-hand tie (the same knot used today throughout the Western world) and ascots were popular.

Ties were still available in the bow tie style, as was the popular black string bow tie, made from a black silk ribbon, about an inch high and a yard long.

1885 neckwear examples

1880s: Upstanding collars and folded-over collars were still popular, and these would be worn with a bow tie or four-in-hand tie. The string tie and ascot were also still in the running. Jackets were buttoned high, leaving little room for neckwear, so ties shrunk in size.

1890s: A mix of high collars and folded-over collars were worn. The long tie with the four-in-hand knot reigned supreme. But the bow tie, ascot, and knotted scarf were also frequently worn.

Post-1900: It goes without saying that the detachable collars introduced in the 1830s were worn with collarless shirts. For work or more casual situations, men wore the collarless shirt without the detachable collar but would still wrap a scarf-like tie around the neck of the shirt, knot it, and tuck its tails in between button gaps. This style was popular among working-class professionals and bridged the gap from the gutty era into the transitional era when the Haskell ball first came on the scene.

Compare this style to the much more formal fashion these same two golfers are wearing in the 1895 photo shown with the 1890s entry above. Why not dispense with the tie altogether? In part, there was an expectation to be dressed up on the course. But Hickory Hacker Christian Williams makes a very good point. "As good as they were at playing golf, they were still considered working class and paid as such, so I think something else we're seeing in these photos is golfers looking the best they can within their meager means," Williams notes.

Prosecutors allegedly have a hidden informant who ‘would tighten the screws’ on Kohberger , according to an explosive claim.

According to a recent report, two roommates who survived the November shooting that killed four of their friends were messaging each other while they were awake in their off-campus rental home at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho.

On November 13, 2022, at 4 a.m., Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin were slain in a home invasion. Prior to Thanksgiving break, they had all spent a Friday night out with friends.

The information was purportedly given to Goncalves’ father by grand jurors in the case, according to a long Air Mail piece. However, the writer acknowledges that neither Goncalves nor his lawyer consented to respond.

Regarding the matter, the court has imposed a tight gag order. The family released a statement calling the charges a “very poor attempt at getting attention” and “obviously fictional.” Steve Goncalves and his attorney did not immediately react to queries from Fox News Digital about the report’s assertions.

“Steve had been told that the two survivors allegedly had not only been awake while the killings had taken place but that they had heard everything,” according to the article. “More astonishingly, his grand-jury sources alleged that the two girls had been texting one another as the murderer methodically went from one room to the next.”

Five months before Kohberger’s defense was deprived of the opportunity to contest the probable cause that led to his detention at a preliminary hearing due to a grand jury indictment, at least one of the remaining roommates saw something fishy, according to court records made public in January.

The roommate, who lived on the second floor of the three-story property, said to the police that she heard sounds around four in the morning, which she thought were coming from Goncalves having fun with her dog on the top floor. Nevertheless, Goncalves and Mogen would subsequently be discovered dead by police in the other upstairs bedroom.

The probable cause affidavit states that she then believed she heard Goncalves remark, “There’s someone here.” The probable cause affidavit states that she glanced out of her room but saw nothing.

Investigators claim that at 4:12 a.m., Kernodle was still alive and used the TikTok app on her phone.

According to the affidavit, the roommate soon believed she heard weeping coming from Kernodle’s room, which was on the same level. Peeping out, she heard a man remark, “It’s OK. I am going to assist you.

When she “opened her door for the third time,” she saw a guy wearing black clothing, a mask, and “bushy eyebrows” walking out the back sliding door. Later on, she told the police that he was “athletically built, but not very muscular.”

According to court filings, she froze in astonishment. He passed her by and turned to go. The four victims, according to the police, had all been stabbed many times prior to 4:25 a.m.

No one called 911 until about noon the next day, according to the police. Police have said that it originated from one of the survivors’ phones, but they have not disclosed the identity of the caller.

Officers responding to the horrifying sight found a vital piece of evidence close to Mogen’s body: a Ka-Bar knife sheath that seemed to have been touched by Kohberger, according to the police.

After defying a subpoena in the case, the remaining housemate—who is hardly mentioned in the probable cause document—agreed to an interview with Kohberger’s defense attorneys in April.

In the probable cause affidavit, police mostly relied on the sheath, the suspect car, and phone records. The Air Mail report did, however, also imply that they had an undercover spy who “would tighten the screws” by providing confidential evidence.

Bill Thompson, the prosecuting attorney for Latah County, informed the court earlier this year that he would pursue the death sentence in the event that Kohberger was found guilty.

In May, Kohberger filed not guilty pleas to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of criminal burglary before Idaho District Judge John Judge.

The judge last week dismissed Kohberger’s request to halt the case and revoked the order granting a fast trial, which the defense had previously agreed to forego.

On October 26, Kohberger is scheduled to return to court, where the judge will hear arguments on the defense’s improbable motion to dismiss the indictment.

Kohberger was pursuing a Ph.D. in criminology at the nearby Washington State University at the time of the killings. He is being detained at the Latah County Jail in Moscow, Idaho, without being allowed to post bond.
