I tried the Liforme yoga mat. Here’s what I thought. (Review)

Liforme Yoga Mat Review

My wife was recently in the market for a new yoga mat.

She takes hot yoga classes about 3 times per week at a local studio, and her old Lulu mat had been worn down to the bone.

I’d just finished doing some research on the best mats for hot yoga and told her, according to everything I’d read, she absolutely had to try the Liforme yoga mat.

After putting it through the paces at a few high-intensity hot yoga class, here’s our hands-on, in-depth Liforme yoga mat review!

Overall, the Liforme yoga mat has been a gamechanger.

The grip is rock solid even under extremely sweaty conditions, and the lines on the mat make a massive difference in helping you be intentional about hand and foot placement. Though it’s a little on the heavy side and the included bag can be a bit cumbersome, we’re absolutely in love with the Liforme mat and highly recommend it.

But let’s take a little bit of a closer look.

(You can also jump right over to Amazon to get your Liforme mat now .)

What is the Liforme yoga mat & what makes it unique?

There are a few pretty awesome selling points of the Liforme mat that make it a great pick, but the boldest and most noticeable thing about it is the alignment lines on the mat.

Instead of just a logo or a plain surface, Liforme mats have something called an “AlignForMe,” system etched into the padding.

According to Liforme, these lines are specifically designed to help yogis improve their technique, navigate the mat, and provide an excellent foundation for their workouts.

The spots on the mat include:

  • End to end lines , for even length-wise placement
  • Reverse points for extra length-wise alignment
  • The Lotus , or the center of the mat
  • 45-degree lines for heel alignment
  • A central line for width-wise alignment

(Scroll down to the next section for an overhead look at the lines and the full mat.)

Liforma yoga mat alignment lines

Outside of that, the Liforme mat also makes some other big promises:

Supremely grippy:

I’m not sure I’ve ever read more positive reviews regarding the grip and non-slip texture of a yoga mat. People absolutely rave about this mat for sweaty hot yoga sessions.

I wouldn’t consider this an extra tall mat or anything, but it’s a hair wider and longer than your standard yoga mat. Pair that with the alignment lines, and you get lots of space for your practice.

Eco-friendly:

These mats are completely PVC free, which is an awesome bonus. Liforme claims these will biodegrade in 5 years or less in a normal landfill if you do ever decide to throw it away.

How big is the Liforme yoga mat? (Dimensions & weight)

The Liforme yoga mat

This mat is a tad bigger than your usual mat.

Most mats measure in at around 24 inches wide by 68 inches long.

The Liforme mat is 26.8 inches wide and 72.8 inches long — a good 2 to 4 inches bigger in both dimensions.

Again, I wouldn’t consider it an extra long mat, but it’s great to have that little bit of extra room if you’re on the taller side or like to really take up the full space of your mat during practice.

This yoga mat is also pretty thin, at only .16 inches. That’s a fraction thinner than my wife’s old Lulu mat, but it’s not among the thinnest mats on the market.

Weight wise, the Liforme is definitely on the heavier side, weighing in at 5.51 pounds. It’s dense and solid, but not overly bulking.

Does it come with a warranty?

As far as I can tell, there’s no official warranty on these mats.

On Liforme’s website, under Shipping & Returns, they mention that you can return a mat within 14 days if you’re not happy with it.

But when it comes to wear and tear over time, it’s not clear if they offer a guarantee of the product’s longevity.

However, I’ve heard really good things about Liforme brand’s customer service, so if you have an issue with your mat, I’d reach out and I’m sure they’ll help however they can.

How do you clean the Liforme yoga mat?

This was definitely a big question we had, because we all know how sweaty and gross yoga mats can get if not cared for properly.

According to the instructions that came with our mat, here’s what you need to do:

  • After class, unroll your mat at home and let it dry fully before storing it back in the bag
  • Every 5-10 uses, wipe it down with very heavily-diluted soap, lemon juice, or white vinegar (also heavily diluted in water)
  • Always let it dry fully after cleaning
  • Don’t leave your mat out in the sun
  • When it’s dry and not in use, keep it rolled up and stored away
  • Avoid contacting the mat with lots of creams, oils, or other skin products

And that’s pretty much it! Easy peasy.

What happened when I took the Liforme yoga mat to yoga class

Alright, so we tried it out over the course of a couple of hot yoga sessions.

What did we think?

My wife is the yogi of the family, so below I’ll paraphrase her impressions.

The grip on this mat is EXCELLENT.

I believe her word for it was “game-changer.”

It’s extremely grippy and solid without feeling tacky at all, even under really sweaty conditions.

(She practices hot yoga in a 95 degree room and sweats… a lot!)

There might be a tiny bit of slippage if you’re literally planting in a puddle of sweat, but this mat can hold up to a ton of moisture and still provide insane grip.

Liforme calls it “warrior-like” grip.

She mentioned that on the old mat, she was having trouble with side planks, but with a better grip her strength on that pose has improved dramatically.

It’s also important to note that the bottom of the mat, itself, is extremely grippy. So not only do you not slip on the mat, but the mat stays firmly planted in place on the floor with ease.

Not much to say here.

It’s a comfortable mat, thin but not so thin you feel like you’re practicing on the floor.

There’s just enough cushion, but plenty of firmness, for a great practice.

We got the pink mat, and she’s absolutely in love with the color.

You can also grab it green, blue, or black.

As for the lines, some people may or may not like the way they look, but they are a SERIOUS advantage when it comes to your yoga practice.

They’ve helped my wife be incredibly intentional about where she’s putting her hands, her feet, and the way she’s spacing her limbs and body. The lines and spots are excellent landmarks for consistency in your poses.

It’s common for yoga mats to smell out of the box, and the Liforme was no exception.

It had a mild odor when we first opened it up, but nothing worse than your average yoga mat.

She reports that the smell wasn’t a factor in any of her classes, even with her nose right on the mat in child’s pose — and that’s saying something because she has an EXTREMELY sensitive nose.

So you may not love the smell right out of the box, but it shouldn’t be a problem once the mat has aired out.

Liforme Yoga Mat Pros

Alright, so what did we love about it?

So many things!

The grip on this mat is truly unbelievable. I even tried it myself, and the rumors are true… you won’t budge on this thing.

If you’ve ever had trouble with firmly planting yourself during tough poses or slipping around during hot yoga sessions, you really need to try the Liforme.

The alignment lines:

I’ve heard some people find these lines distracting, and if you’re a highly advanced yogi, you may not need them. But a little extra guidance as far as spacing and foot and hand placement can be AMAZINGLY helpful.

This is probably the biggest thing that sets the Liforme apart; I don’t know of too many other mats that have this feature.

The total package:

This mat just works.

It’s not a complicated piece of equipment with tons of bells, whistles, and features, but it does what it does extraordinarily well.

It locks into place on the floor and gives you a perfect surface for your practice. You’d be surprised how much little slips, slides, and adjustments can knock you out of your flow or meditative state.

The Liforme mat eliminates those problems and lets you get out of your head and into your body.

Liforme Yoga Mat Cons

There wasn’t much we disliked about this mat, but let’s get into a few of the minor drawbacks:

No getting around it, the Liforme is not the cheapest mat on the market.

You’ll want to check Amazon for the latest price , but expect to pay close to twice what you would for most popular mats.

Don’t get me wrong, the value and quality are literally off the charts. But this mat won’t fit everyone’s budget.

The Liforme mat comes with a nifty carrying bag, which we liked overall, but the bag is a little bit cumbersome.

It’s not the easiest thing in the world to get the mat (which is already a little heavy) rolled up and back into the bag, especially when it’s really sweaty.

The bag would be awesome for taking a trip, but for day to day use we prefer yoga mat staps.

(You can get straps that fit almost any yoga mat here on Amazon .)

Liforma yoga mat carrying bag

A tad bulky:

This mat is specifically designed to be a few inches wider and longer than your standard mat, and as such, it weighs a tiny bit more.

It’s not bulky or cumbersome, really, but if you’re looking for something crazy lightweight (or you’re super, super petite), this might not be the one for you.

Wrapping Up

What else can we say? We absolutely loved this yoga mat.

To recap, you’d be really hard pressed to find a mat with:

  • Better grip — This is definitely one of the best choices around for hot yoga
  • Alignment lines — They’re not for everyone, but for a lot of people they will revolutionize the way you practice yoga
  • Higher overall quality — This mat is eco-friendly and made to last.

I don’t think I could possibly give it a higher recommendation.

All that’s left to do now is for you to check the Liforme out on Amazon for the latest price and more stellar user reviews.

Hope this helped!

The Liforme Yoga Mat is one of our top contenders for those looking to take their yogi game to the next level. From the mat’s appealing aesthetics to its impressive functionality, this yoga mat has left a lasting impression on us. Upon first touch, the mat promises a sense of reliability and support. With a thickness of 4.2mm, it strikes the ideal balance between cushioning and stability, which provided a comfortable yet grounded experience throughout our practice. The Liforme Yoga Mat boasts an attractive design that caught the eyes of fellow yoga class attendees with its colorful and gold embellished alignment.

Size : 185cm long x 68cm wide

Thickness: 4.2mm

Weight: 2.5kg

Materials: Rubber base, polyurethane top surface, high grade non-toxic and eco-friendly ink

Colors: Black, Blue, Dusk Blue

The generous dimensions of the Liforme Yoga Mat, measuring 185cm long and 68cm wide, offer ample space for fluid movement and unrestricted positioning. Whether we were trying to master challenging poses like the headstand or indulging in restorative stretches during the testing of this mat, we found this Liforme number accommodates a range of needs, making it a top contender for one of the best yoga mats .

We found transporting the mat was a breeze with a complimentary carrying bag included by Liforme. The main reason why we found the handled bag useful is that the mat falls on the heavier side, weighing approximately 2.5kg.

We tested this yoga mat in a Vinyasa class, indoors at home and outdoors on a hot summer's day to test out how anti-slip this mat really is when things get hotter. Despite finding this mat a little on the heavy side, we certainly were not disappointed with the quality, stunning aesthetic and how supported we felt on this mat during our various practices but in this review, we will guide you through all of our praises and critiques in more detail. Liforme yoga mat: How we tested

Liforme yoga mat being tested by Live Science writer, Jessica Downey

To help our readers who are considering buying the Liforme mat, we subjected the mat to rigorous testing in various environments and yoga sessions to establish where it excels and how it could do better.

Firstly, we took the Liforme Yoga Mat to a Vinyasa class, where we explored its performance during fast-paced sequences and challenging transitions. We paid close attention to how well the mat held its grip on different surfaces and whether it provided the necessary stability for smooth movements.

Next, we brought the mat indoors for home practice sessions. Here, we tested its anti-slip properties on different flooring types, including hardwood, laminate, and carpet. We focused on stability during static asanas and monitored whether the mat stayed securely in place, preventing any unwanted slipping or sliding.

To further gauge the mat's anti-slip capabilities, we took it outdoors on a hot day in summer. With temperatures rising, we put the Liforme Yoga Mat to the test in a high-intensity mobility session. The goal was to assess its grip under potentially sweaty conditions, ensuring it maintained stability even when temperatures soared.

Liforme yoga mat: Price and availability

Currently, this model is available for purchase directly from the official Liforme website, or from Amazon . Priced between $149 and $185, this Liforme Yoga Mat reflects its exceptional quality and attention to detail. This is likely to put a fairly large dent in many buyers' pockets, especially during a cost of living crisis but we couldn’t fault the mat's durability and performance making the investment justifiable for those seeking a long-lasting and reliable yoga companion.

The Liforme Yoga Mat is a premium choice that will appeal to dedicated yogis who prioritize quality, durability, and enhanced performance, and are willing to invest in a mat that will support their practice for years to come.

Liforme yoga mat: Design

First of all design-wise, we were impressed by its thoughtful construction and attention to detail. We tested out the Black option but the Liforme mat is available in several charming colors to suit different preferences.

The mat is constructed from planet-friendly materials. This was a big plus for us as we strive to make environmentally conscious decisions when reviewing and weighing up different products. It’s PVC-free and made from high-quality, non-toxic materials. Notably, these mats are biodegradable within one to five years in normal landfill conditions, contributing to a more sustainable approach to yoga equipment. Additionally, the mat features durable, non-toxic, and eco-friendly ink in its printing process, ensuring a vibrant design that stands the test of time.

Liforme Yoga Mat - design

The Liforme Yoga Mat exhibits a ‘warrior-like’ grip. This feature helps to provide an exceptional non-slip surface, maintaining stability and safety even during intense and sweaty sessions. Its unique three-layer construction and quick-drying CleanGrip® technology is there to prevent sweat from penetrating the natural rubber base, maximizing hygiene and grip for a confident practice.

Weighing 2.5kg, it requires some extra effort when it comes to transporting it to yoga classes or travelling further afield with it. Nonetheless, the 4.2mm thickness offers enhanced comfort and stability during your yoga practice, making up for the mat's heaviness by ensuring a solid and grounded feel that allows you to fully immerse yourself in each movement and posture without discomfort or distractions.

Liforme yoga mat: Performance

We have tested out some of the best yoga mats for grip in the game so our standards are high, just read our Yogi Bare Wild Paws Natural Rubber Extreme Grip yoga mat review to see the competition .

Lo and behold, the Liforme yoga mat held its own when we put its grip quality to the test. We found that the mat's "warrior-like grip" played a pivotal role in enhancing our yoga practice, particularly when it came to more challenging transitional moves in a Vinyasa class. We also found that moves which require a wide leg stance were executed with confidence and stability, thanks to the mat's exceptional grip.

While the black color option added a touch of elegance to our yoga sessions, we did notice that dust and small smudges were more noticeable but that is to be expected with a darker shade of mat. However, the it’s easy-to-clean nature, combined with the included storage bag, allowed us to keep it tidy and protected when not in use. The complimentary storage bag proved to be a convenient accessory for safeguarding the mat from dust and maintaining its overall cleanliness.

Liforme Yoga Mat performance

The alignment design featured on the Liforme yoga mat was a valuable tool for maintaining balance and establishing proper positioning on the mat. The alignment markers act as helpful guides, which assisted us in aligning our hands, feet, and body in various poses.

The only grumble we had and one aspect to consider when choosing the Liforme yoga mat is its size and weight. The mat's generous dimensions, measuring 185cm long and 68cm wide, provide ample space for unrestricted movement. However, in smaller yoga environments such as a busy class, in a bedroom or other small space at home or during travel, we found that its larger size became a limitation. The mat's substantial footprint and weight made it less suitable for easy transportation, as it occupies significant space and adds to the overall load.

Liforme yoga mat in its carry case

Liforme yoga mat: Care

We recommend our handy go-to guide on how to clean a yoga mat , but for this review we also sought out instructions for care via the Liforme website itself, which offers plenty of advice on keeping your mat in good shape and maintaining its pretty design and overall cleanliness.

After each practice, especially those that induce a good sweat, we made sure to allow the mat to thoroughly dry before rolling it up. If we used it in a class where we had to vacate the space promptly, we unrolled it at home to allow it to air dry as soon as possible.

While we didn't purchase the Liforme cleaning solution specifically, we achieved excellent results by wiping down the mat with a mild detergent solution and a soft towel, ensuring to remove any dirt or residue. We then carefully dried it using a separate towel, guaranteeing its complete dryness before storage.

Taking the mat's biodegradable nature into consideration, we were mindful of prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can accelerate degradation. We followed the manufacturer's recommendation to roll the mat with the colored side and alignment design facing outward.

Other than a few small oily looking smudges showing on the mat there are no visible faults to this mat. Liforme does warn customers to avoid practicing on the mat after using body oils or moisturizers, which is where we fell short. All in all,  the mat remained in tip-top position during our testing and we think this is down to it being made of quality materials and the helpful up-keep guidelines set out by Liforme.

Liforme yoga mat: User reviews

Of the twelve reviews left on the Liforme website for this model, just about every one scores the mat five stars out of a total of five, bar one who only dropped one star from their rating. This buyer admires the look of the mat but had a few small qualms, “Debris shows up on it because it’s so dark. If you do warrior poses quickly it’s difficult to turn quick and keep your balance BUT for gripping it’s superb! Your palms/ fingertips, pads of toes and feet are like suction cups.”

The other reviews shout out the great quality of the materials and how this Liforme option is a big upgrade from previous less grippy models bought from other brands. One buyer claims this is the best yoga mat ever. They left the following words in their five-star review, “They seem expensive but when you get these mats you realize they're actually cheap considering the craftsmanship that's gone into them.” They also commented on how suitable it is for other forms of exercise including bodyweight exercise and HIIT classes.

Another person says this Liforme mat has allowed them to perform kneeling poses again, with the thickness of the mat fully supporting them from hard surfaces.

If this yoga mat isn't for you

Image shows a half-unrolled pink Lululemon Reversible 5mm Yoga Mat.

As much as we enjoyed testing out this Liforme mat, we appreciate that it won’t be the right fit for everyone. Thankfully, if it doesn’t tick all your boxes, your options aren’t narrowed down as there are plenty more great options out there.

One such option is the Heathyoga Yoga Mat with Alignment Lines, priced considerably cheaper than the Liforme mat at $37.99. It too has been designed with markings for hand and foot placement and is an excellent choice for beginners looking to ensure correct alignment and minimize the risk of injury. With its wider and longer dimensions compared to standard mats, it also comes with a free Velcro strap and carrying strap for added convenience.

Another noteworthy choice is the Lululemon Reversible 5mm Yoga Mat, which is another pricier mat but less than the Liforme option, costing you $128. Renowned for its quality, this mat offers durability and outstanding traction in both wet and dry conditions. While it may have a slight initial odor and is prone to scratching, its performance compensates for these minor drawbacks.

Or for travelers seeking a highly portable option, the JadeYoga Travel Yoga Mat is an ideal choice. Moderately priced at $69.95, this mat is thin, lightweight, and compact, folding down to the size of a yoga block. Its textured design provides excellent grip, ensuring stability during your practice. While it lacks significant padding, it takes up minimal space in your luggage or storage. Although it can become slightly slippery when heavily saturated with sweat, it resists marking or staining.

It depends on your standards of what you personally want in a yoga mat.

I’ve been doing all types of yoga for over 15 years and instructing yoga for more than half of that time. I’ve personally tired dozens of different yoga mats and this one comes in at the top for many reasons.

But again, that depends on what you want.

I’ll dive into some of the obvious benefits of this mat, as well as some of the hidden ones as well. If you are on the fence about this mat then I hope this liforme yoga mat review will help you make the decision either way.

Let’s take a quick look at the product...

Liforme Original Yoga Mat With Alignment Mark System

Over 830 Ratings!

  • Best grip of any yoga mat on the market so you never slip - even when you're dripping sweat!
  • Enjoy the feeling of confidence in your yoga practice when as you keep in perfect alignment through poses.
  • Veteran yoga students & teachers swear by this mat due to the professional feel and comfort they have while practicing.

It has fantastic reviews…

In fact, I’m pretty sure this is the highest rated yoga mat on Amazon. If not, it’s at least in the top 3 by a thin margin.

So why do people, myself included, love this yoga mat? Well there are a number of reasons which we’ll discuss below.

Keep in mind that part of why this mat is so popular has to do with people’s experience with OTHER mats before finding this one.

After you use enough crappy yoga mats then you come up with a short list of things you DON’T want in a yoga mat. Such as…

  • Slipping when you sweat
  • Slipping when your hands & feet are dry
  • Too little room to move around
  • Dealing with a rank chemical smell from the mat
  • Too much cushion on the mat that affects your balance
  • Too little cushion on the mat when you sitting

Fortunately, the Liforme yoga mat addresses all these issues and more...

The Obvious Benefits

Alignment Markings The Mat

The first thing that probably caught your eye was the lines on the mat.

Liforme yoga mats all have alignment lines on their mats. Some people may not care at first, but after a couple of uses you start to really find them helpful.

You’ve probably heard alignment cues such as, “Here in Warrior 2, be sure to keep a straight line from your front heel to the middle of that back arch of your foot.”

Well now you’ll know EXACTLY what they mean and how to line up.

But it’s not just the fact you know where you are. You now have a measure of where you are going as well...

Helps To Track Progress Too

The AlignForMe system from Liforme has few lines at the front and back of the mat.

This allows you to tell how deep you are in poses like:

  • And many more

You can see in real time if your foot is closer to that first line or the second line just a bit farther away.

This means you can track your progression in postures to know how deep you are.

It’s pretty cool to have these simple lines on the yoga mat. Personally, I can’t do the splits - yet. However, I know how far I have come because of the alignment lines.

The Size Of The Liforme Yoga Mat

The size of this mat is 72.8" long x 26.8" wide at 4.5mm thick.

Now that may not be very impressive or a big deal to you, but the standard size for most other yoga mats is only 68” x 24”.

Now regardless if you’re 6 foot tall or not doesn’t matter. The benefit of having a slightly bigger mat is that you’ll have to move around less.

How many times have you ever had to reposition yourself on your mat when you’re doing certain poses? This happens to me a lot in shavasana on smaller yoga mats.

Furthermore, it’s not massive. If you play in the NBA and need a large yoga mat then this will be small for you. The point I’m trying to make is that if you’re between 5 foot and 6 foot then this mat’s size is perfect.

A Downside That Doesn’t Really Matter

So here I am talking about how wonderful the size of this mat is when there is an inherent downside to this.

Most yoga towels (especially after you wash them) may not cover this mat completely. If you have mild OCD tendencies then it could be quite distracting to have your towel significantly shorter than your mat.

But this may not matter as much as you think…

Most folks use a yoga towel because it helps them to stay griped on the mat better when they start sweating. This is very common in hot yoga classes.

I’ll get into this later, but fortunately you won’t slip on this mat. It’s actually the best mat for hot yoga I have ever found, and I’ve been teaching hot yoga classes for over 6 years.

So while your towel may look odd with this somewhat bigger mat, ultimately it may not matter because you don’t really need a towel.

How It Feels

Here’s what happened when I first tried a Liforme mat before an advanced hot yoga class one day…

My fellow teacher friend Crystal has a Liforme and said, “give it a try!”

The second I stepped on the mat I was impressed. The FEEL of my feet on the mat was solid and soothingly stable.

But the real test came later when I was in Downward Facing Dog. I you’ve ever had troubles with your hands slipping in Down Dog then you know what I mean.

Anyways, I was dumping sweat, my hands were anything but dry, and they stayed solid in place and didn’t slip once.

You just feel safe on this mat. That’s the best way I can describe it. Like you’re lovingly held in place, but are also free to move as you please.

It Stays Put No Matter the Floor

Some other mats have a different sliding problem…

It has to do with how much the mat slides on the floor.

I hear a lot of people say, “My yoga mat is good at home on the carpet, but once I take it to a tile or hardwood surface then it starts sliding too much.”

Again, Liforme comes to the rescue. This mat is amazingly stable on any flooring type.

One caveat… I’d stay away from using this mat on dirt or on the beach. The tiny bits of grime can scratch up the surface of your mat which could make it loose some of its tactile and non-slip properties.

Travel Version

Liforme Travel Yoga Mat With Alignment Mark System

Over 140 Ratings!

  • Enjoy the same level of safety and stability, but in this sleek travel mat version.
  • At only 2mm thick it rolls up small for easy packing and storage.
  • No slipping on the mat and no sliding on the floor means you can practice on any surface without fear of loosing traction.

Is made of rubber which can be troublesome.

Granted, rubber made from rubber trees is natural and sustainable, but the real problem is that rubber mats often smell like a tire factory.

Thicker Jade and Manduka mats often smell bad for weeks or even months on end. This mat however will lose it’s smell in about a week of use.

Now that may be a deal breaker for some people, but unless you go with a cotton or TPE yoga mat then you’ll just have to deal with some type of smell for a short amount of time.

A Quick Word About Yoga Mat Materials

You want to stay away from mats made with PVC.

This mat does not have PVC which is partly why it’s so expensive. PVC is cheap to make and manufacture, but is harmful to the planet and in some cases the human body as well.

Mats you can find at discount stores use this material all the time. If you can’t shell out the hundred-some-odd dollars for a Liforeme mat then at least consider spending $40 or more for a non toxic yoga mat.

I’ve tried so many different mats in my quest to find a good mat for hot yoga.

I want to be very clear about something… When you read reviews on Google or Amazon about how a mat, “has good traction and doesn’t slip.” Just don't believe them.

Here’s my short experience with other yoga mats:

  • Cotton yoga mats your hands will slip when they are dry.
  • Cheap-o PVC mats get very slippery when wet
  • Manduka and Jade mats are okay, but ultimately if you sweat a lot then you’ll need to buy a towel to prevent the slipage
  • TPE yoga mats are good for the first 2 months, but then they lose their grip pretty fast.

Liforme are the best yoga mats to use in hot yoga - period. You could be doing yoga underneath a waterfall, inside the amazon, inside of a massive sauna and you won't slip. That’s how good they are.

You Don't Need a Towel

I like to travel light…

I don’t want to keep up with a dozen different yoga towels just to do yoga either. I want to grab my mat and some water and go to class.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been getting ready to teach a large yoga class and a student will inevitably ask me, “Hey do you have an extra towel? I didn’t bring mine and now I’m going to be slipping throughout the whole class.”

If you have a personal preference of using a towel on top of your yoga mat then that’s fine. I know that yoga is a very personal experience and you should do what feels best to keep you as present as possible in your practice.

That being said, an extra benefit of this mat is that you don’t need a yoga towel. Maybe just a hand towel for a brow wipe here and there.

How Long It Lasts

Here is the only minor downside to this yoga mat…

If you do intense yoga classes 4-5 times a week then this mat will eventually lose some of its amazing gripping qualities.

You’ll notice that the places where you put your feet and your hands are the first to go.

However, this does take about 1-2 years to get to this point.

If you only go to yoga 2 times a week, then this mat will last you 4-5 years.

For the die-hard vinyasa goers out there this mat is wonderful. It just kinda sucks to have to buy a new one every 18 months. However, if you’re THAT serious about yoga then you may not mind.

So Is It Worth The Investment?

This is a, “I’m going to treat myself,” type of yoga mat.

If you have been doing yoga for a while with a junky PVC yoga mat and want something much better then yes, you should buy this mat.

I know I’m biased, but it’s frankly hard NOT to be when this mat checks all the boxes. I love Liforme, they’re just the best.

I would tell you if a mat sucked…

In my opinion hemp and jute mats kinda suck. Cotton mats are okay, but bad for hot yoga and don’t provide enough padding. Jade and Manduka mats are really good, but this one is just a tiny bit better.

This mat is 100% worth it if you do yoga more than 2 times a week.

If you only do yoga once or twice a week then check out a TPE yoga mat and save yourself some money.

6 Best Travel Yoga Mats in 2023

liforme travel mat review

By Mary Beth Skylis

Collage of travel yoga mats on green background

As someone who exercises frequently and is always on the move, I’ve discovered that not all workout equipment is well suited for travel, especially when it comes to yoga mats . Over the years, I’ve tested out a lot of travel mats during trips across the world—and the ones that stood out all shared similar features (such as a compact design, easy-to-clean surfaces, and lightweight structure).

But don’t just take my word for it: To help you identify a great travel yoga mat for your next trip, SELF consulted experts and pulled together a list of the best options available. Whether you want to keep up with your practice on vacation or stretch it all out while on the road, one of these mats can help you achieve those goals.

How to choose a travel yoga mat

First things first: If you’ll be bringing it on the go, it has to be easy to haul: “When it comes to a travel mat, it has to be grippy, lightweight, and portable enough to fit in my carry-on bag,” Jake Panasevich , a registered yoga instructor based in Philadelphia, tells SELF.

As for yoga mat material, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a popular choice for travelers because of its grip—but many yogis prefer natural rubber, which offers a bit more cushion. And for an easier-to-clean mat (a major plus when you’re on a trip), look for a closed-cell design , meaning the material is nonporous, Sarah Larson Levey , a registered yoga instructor and cofounder of Y7 Studio in NYC, previously told SELF.

Though standard yoga mats are generally at least three millimeters thick, something thinner is ideal for folding, rolling, and squeezing into travel bags, Morgan Rodríguez, a registered yoga instructor and founder of Grounding Down , tells SELF. You should also consider overall weight: Most options range from two to seven pounds, but an ideal travel mat will come in a little lighter—say, between two and four pounds. That said, minimalist mats may not be well-suited for all yogis: A thicker mat with more cushion might feel way more comfortable for people with sensitive knees or joint pain, Annie Moves , a registered yoga instructor at Alo Moves, previously told SELF.

Other features can help keep your mat ultraportable too. For instance, strap bands keep it folded or rolled up during expeditions, replacing bulky mat bags.

Below, you’ll find yogi- and expert-recommended picks, as well as some of my favorite mats. All of these options are under four pounds, less than two millimeters thick, and super easy to pack.

Manduka eKO Superlite Travel Yoga Mat

Best Overall: eKO Manduka Superlite Travel Mat

The Manduka Superlite Travel Mat is one of Panasevich’s favorite travel yoga mats. It has a closed-cell structure, which helps prevent moisture from seeping into the fibers, so it doesn’t get too stinky with regular use. When it’s time to pack, you can easily fold this mat down to the size of a laptop.

Liforme Travel Mat

Best for Form: The Liforme Travel Yoga Mat

The Liforme Travel mat comes with alignment markings, which show you where to position your body to maintain proper form. Its thin design helps keep it portable for travel, and the rubber surface is grippy enough for sweaty workouts. One customer wrote: “This is the absolute best mat for hot yoga or for any yoga where you’re going to sweat. It’s tiny and so easy to take with you on the road.” That said, at over three pounds, this Liforme Travel Yoga Mat is the heaviest option on our list.

  • Weight : 3.5 lb
  • Thickness : 2.2 mm
  • Unrolled size : 71" long x 26" wide

Lululemon The Mat

Best for Hot Yoga: Lululemon (Un) Mat

Hot yoga lovers know how difficult it can be to find a mat that stays sticky even after it gets drenched in sweat. This is one area where Lululemon’s (Un) Mat excels: It features Lulu’s famous grippy layer, which helps minimize slipping and sliding, even as the class warms up. Plus I love that it’s substantially lighter than most Lululemon mats, which makes it easier to transport during my travels.

  • Weight: 2.32 lb
  • Thickness: 1.5 mm
  • Unrolled Size: 71" long x 26" wide

Yoloha Nomad Air Cork Yoga Mat

Best Cork Option: Yoloha Yoga Nomad Cork Yoga Mat

The combination of cork and natural rubber means this mat is flexible and easy to fold or roll. I’ve personally taken the Yoloha Nomad mat on so many adventures, and I’ve found it has phenomenal durability and non-slip grip. Plus, I can easily tuck it away into most baggage compartments.

JadeYoga Jade Voyager Mat

Best Grip: Jade Yoga Voyager Mat

The Voyager comes with the same reliable grip that Jade mats are famous for, which allows yogis to keep their hands and feet firmly planted—even during an ultra-sweaty flow. This model in particular can pack down to a third of the size of a standard yoga mat. “I bring my trusty Jade mat everywhere. I even flew it to Nepal. I’m not willing to sacrifice the right amount of padding or non-slip grip,” Amy Burgart, a yoga instructor in Colorado, tells SELF.

  • Weight : 1.5 lb
  • Unrolled size : 68" long x 24" wide

Gaiam Folding Travel Exercise Mat

Best Budget Mat: Gaiam Foldable Yoga Mat

Finding ways to budget can help you get the most out of your travels, which is just one reason why this Gaiam mat is a great pick for adventurous yogis. Not only is it the least expensive one on our list, but the mat also folds into a 10-inch-by-12-inch square, which makes it easier to tuck away in your suitcase.

One reviewer called it a “must for flight attendants or frequent travelers.” Whereas, another customer loved that it’s “lightweight, folds up easily and compactly, and fits in a suitcase. It has a nice sticky surface to help you hold poses.” It even comes with a lifetime guarantee!

  • Weight: 3 lb
  • Thickness: 2 mm
  • Unrolled size: 68" long x 24" wide

L'Oréal Blackett

Want to invest in a Liforme yoga mat? When it comes to great yoga mats, there are tons of options on the market and it can be overwhelming to narrow it down to just one. Whether mastering a difficult yoga pose or using it for an intense HIIT workout, we rated the Liforme yoga mat for its suppleness, durability, grip, and texture.

Liforme was created by American yoga enthusiast James Armitage, who wanted to help both instructors and yoga-devotees with their alignment. The mats are detailed with unique markings that they’ve deemed their "AlignForMe system" to help you have a more effective session. Liforme mats are also highly ranked for their incredible grip. I personally wanted a mat that could handle both a warrior pose but could potentially double for other workouts, and Liforme’s options offered the best of both worlds, making them some of the best yoga mats currently on the market.

The Liforme mats averages at $170 (£90-£115), a particularly steep price for a yoga mat. However, Liforme mats are yoga accessories that are worth the investment for those who want to take their practice seriously and won’t leave them gathering dust in the cupboard.

The Liforme yoga mat: what you need to know

Design of the liforme yoga mat.

The Liforme mat comes in a wide array of colors but its most distinctive feature is the "AlignForMe" markings on each mat. With most people working out from home these days, the handy line along the center of the mat and clearly marked areas for hand and foot placements offer a great indication of whether or not you’re aligned (or about to topple over). Without the benefit of directions from an in-person trainer, the markings are a great help when taking yoga classes at home. I found that I was even more balanced than usual, as I was more aware of my foot placement. By shifting my feet a few centimeters within the markings, I even felt my posture change and correct itself.

Material of the Liforme yoga mat

The majority of yoga mats are made out of rubber, PVC or latex, which are not always environmentally-friendly materials. As a proclaimed "plant-friendly" brand, however, Liforme’s yoga mat is made from recycled rubber and is PVC-free. Once old mats are tossed out, Liforme states that it takes one to five years for the mats to decompose in normal landfill conditions. As many look to move away from plastic and there are plenty of biodegradable mats made from natural materials like cork, cotton, and more, Liforme mats are not the most sustainable activewear mats available, however.

Performance of the Liforme yoga mat

The very reason we use a yoga mat is to ensure we get a good grip, and each mat can vary in this respect. There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to master a particularly unsteady tree pose and sensing that your mat is shifting beneath you. The Liforme crew claims to have the “grippiest Yoga mat material currently available on earth”. It’s a bold claim, yet the mat certainly is grippy. It did not budge throughout my 30-minute home yoga session—and I certainly put it through a myriad of fitness tests. On my HIIT sessions, this mat can withstand impact even during my heavy-footed jumps and sweaty burpees. The mat is firm but comfortable and my knees, which tend to give me trouble, felt supported throughout. I would be keen to try this mat out in a hot yoga class where I tend to be the sweatiest and slippiest person in the room. Liforme is pretty confident that it could stand the Hot Yoga heat, too, and states that the mats stay “grippy” even when "sweaty-wet."

Weight of the Liforme yoga mat

At 4.2mm, the Liforme mat is thick and noticeably weighty. If you’re looking for lightweight activewear accessories to carry around, then this may not be suitable, as it could become cumbersome to tote while you're bopping about between yoga sessions. While it is a thick mat, however, I felt grounded and supple rather than squishy. At 185cm long by 68cm wide, it’s a significantly longer length, too. As a tall person, I’ve mistakenly purchased mats that don’t span the length of my legs and arms, so I appreciate the room to stretch my limbs. Although, I do wonder if it’s a little too long to fit in a traditional class. I wouldn’t want to be that annoying person taking up too much space.

How to clean your Liforme yoga mat

It’s recommended that you clean any yoga mat regularly, especially if you enjoy sweaty sessions. You’d be surprised just how germ-ridden these mats can get! If you're wondering how to clean a yoga mat the right way, the brand suggests sponging it down with a tiny bit of dish soap and water every five to ten days. They warn that using heavy and abrasive sprays can wear down the durable material over time. Then, let the mat air dry whilst laying flat. Also, Liforme warns against wearing lotions and oils when using the mat as they can cause permanent stains.

Is the Liforme Yoga Mat worth its price tag?

When in the yoga studio, owning a Liforme yoga mat can feel like a point of pride. Many yoga enthusiasts save up to own one and it feels like a great investment to take with you along your yoga journey. I appreciate that the Liforme mat is made specifically for yoga practice, yet it’s durable enough to withstand a HIIT class or other home workout if it calls for it. It is a heavy mat to carry around and would probably leave you a bit out of breath if taken on a particularly busy commute. While it’s not the most public transport friendly, Liforme has also released a lighter mat to travel with. As many adapt to working out at home, the O.G. mat is great for home-based workouts. The nearly $150 price tag is a stretch, yet for those who expect frequent use, this is a yoga mat that can withstand a lifetime of warrior poses.

The Lifeorme Yoga Mat is made with a natural rubber base with a top surface of Liforme's eco-polyurethane. Each mat includes etched markings to help with foot and hand positioning (Liforme calls this its 'AlignForMe' system), and comes with a sturdy carry bag included. The original is available in a range of colourways, and Lifeorme also offers a selection of alternatives with different themes, as well as the option to create your own completely personalised mat.

These are widely regarded as being some of the very best yoga mats around, but they're a fair bit pricier than many alternatives. So do they warrant that premium price tag? Read on for our full Liforme Yoga Mat review.

Liforme Yoga Mat review: design and care

The bulk of each Liforme yoga mat is made from naturally sourced, sustainable rubber, with a top layer of the brand's own eco-friendly version of polyeuthane. The two layers are heat-bonded (so no toxic glues) and the alignment markings are etched on. It's free from PVC, non-toxic, and will biodegrade in 1-5 years in normal landfill conditions. The packaging is also fully recyclable or reusable. In short, from a sustainability perspective, this is a guilt-free buy.

Lifeorme Yoga Mat: specs

Material: Natural rubber, eco-polyeuthane Weight: 2.5kg Size: L185 x W68cm Thickness: 4.2mm

At 185cm long and 68cm wide, the Liforme mat is both longer and wider than average, giving you a little extra space to play with as you explore different poses.

On the down side, the larger size and the rubber construction mean this is one of the heavier mats you'll come across. If you're regularly lugging your mat over long distances, and need something that won't weigh you down, you'd be better off opting for a foam option (typically cheaper but less hardwearing).

Liforme yoga mat, rolled up, side view

Liforme Yoga Mat review: usability and grip

Aside from the textured placement markings, the eco-polyeuthane topper is completely smooth to touch, which suggests it might be a bit slippery in use. Not so. The Liforme mat delivers excellent grip, both when your skin is dry and when things get a little sweatier – it'd be a great choice for hot yoga .

The Lifeorme yoga mat is 4.2mm, which we'd say is around the perfect thickness for most people. The rubber base does a great job of providing an effective layer of padding while still delivering a stable base for balancing poses. You'll find thicker, softer mats if you switch to foam, but the down side is that a softer surface will have you wobbling about much more.

Liforme yoga mat unrolled on the floor, showing alignment markers

Lifeorme's AlignForMe marking system is nothing short of inspired. It looks abstract to begin with, but as soon as you begin your practice, it becomes clear which parts of your body need to be lined up with which marks, making it easy to tweak your and hone your positioning. Hats off to Liforme for managing to create a design that is intuitive to use, provides helpful guidance, and looks attractive at the same time. The markings are etched onto the mat so you don't need to worry about them rubbing off. This also means you can to some extent feel the gently textured sections with your hands and feet, rather than always having to look for them.

Liforme Yoga Mat review: care

Because it's biodegradable, you'll need to take slightly more care of your Lifeorme mat. The brand warns against leaving it out in the sun for too long, as this can cause the mat to degrade more quickly, and cleaning it too frequently (once every 5-10 uses is enough) or using abrasive cleaning products. Don't let this give you the impression that these are delicate mats – all mats need some care, and the Lifeorme yoga mats are actually impressively robust.

Like traditional polyeuthane mats, Liforme yoga mats are absorbent, which means that your skin's natural oils will leave slight marks. If that's a major issue for you, head to our how to clean your yoga mat guide, where you'll find non-porous alternatives. However, a little bit of staining is far outweighed by the benefits on offer here. To keep your mat fresh and mark-free for longer, avoid practicing with freshly-applied moisturisers or oils on your skin, and occasionally wipe the mat down with a drop of dish soap heavily diluted with water to clean it.

Liforme yoga mat review

Liforme Yoga Mat review: alternatives to consider

Head to our Core Balance Alignment yoga mat review for a closer look at our favourite budget Lifeorme dupe. They look very similar, with etched alignment guides and a dual-layer design. The Core Balance option seems to be less eco-friendly (it uses regular polyurethane rather than Lifeorme's eco-polyurethane), it's water-resistant rather than waterproof, and you don't get the snazzy bag either. It's also 2cm shorter and 2mm thicker than the Lifeorme.

Another major Lifeorme competitor is the Yogi Bare mat . We haven't been able to test one of these out, but on paper it's also similar in design and build, although this one is slightly smaller and thinner than the Lifeorme. It's cheaper than the Lifeorme, but not as cheap as the Core Balance option.

Liforme Yoga Mat review: price and verdict

With an RRP of £100, the Liforme Yoga mat is right at the top end of the market, price wise. Is it worth it? We think so; this is a near-perfect yoga mat. The grip is excellent, the padding just right, and the larger size is useful too. We're also extremely impressed by the AlignForMe marking system, which looks simple, is intuitive to use, and is ideal for tweaking your poses. You are paying a slight premium for eco-friendliness – this mat is PVC-free, non-toxic, and biodegradable at the end of its life – but if you can afford it, that's a decision we'd encourage everyone to make. Do keep an eye on prices too; Lifeorme runs 20% off codes every so often ( Black Friday is a good bet, as is Earth Day).

In practicing saucha (cleanliness or purity in Sanskrit), I decided it was finally time to update my yoga mat to a more sustainable option.

I’ve been using my lululemon The Mat (le tapis) for over 2 years in a sweaty Baptiste practice. There are yoga stains that will never come out. It also started to possess a sour stench after years of bacteria build-up that also caused me to get pimples on my back during practice. After completing my 200 YTT at Be Luminous Yoga, I decided to reward myself to a Liforme (pronounced “Life Form”) yoga mat and see what all the fuss is about.

About Liforme

Liforme began to research the best way to create a sustainable yoga mat in 2008. In 2013, they launched the Liforme Yoga Mat. The mat possessed all the qualities I was looking for.

I initially saw the Liforme mat on the famous Insta-yogi feeds such of  Kino MacGregor  and Kerri Verna. Due to the irresistible powers of social media marketing, I was very strongly inclined to see what the Liforme mat was all about and if the high price point was worth it.

Read more about the history of the yog a mat here .

In my 3-year relationship with yoga, I’ve practiced on all sorts of mats: paper-thin travel mats, natural rubber with a sponge surface, hippie jute, cheap and flaky gym mats, and PVC ones. You name the mat, and I’ve probably tried it!

I eventually narrowed down my yoga mat preference to two qualities: 1) it has to have decent grip, 2) it has to have adequate cushion, and 3) has to be easy to clean.

My Liforme mat arrived within a week. It came in a large rectangular box and was neatly enclosed in a Liforme branded yoga mat bag. It was practice ready! I donated my older yoga mats ( Manduka and Jade) to friends in hopes that they would use them to begin a regular yoga practice.

Liforme Mat Pros

  • Thickness:  4.2 mm. This mat has enough cushion for sensitive joints. It’s comfortable yet very firm, making it great for both supine (on your back) and grounding poses as well as arm balances and inversions.
  • Stickiness and texture: This mat has amazing grip quality. Aside from the alignment markers that are etched on the surface, the mat is also smooth. The stickiness of the mat will prevent me from splaying across the ground in warrior or downward dog.
  • Price:  $140 USD + $25 shipping to the USA. The company is based out of the UK.
  • Material: Liforme mats are composed of natural rubber and eco-friendly polyurethane – making it PVC free and NON-TOXIC ! The top layer is absorbent (similar to lululemon ’s The Mat ) which is great for mat gripping. The mat also provides a lot of cushioning compared to other mats.
  • Eco-friendliness:  The rubber is sustainable and naturally sourced and they also do not use any toxic adhesives. Their cardboard packaging is fully recyclable as well.
  • Size & style:  At 26.8” x 72.8” this mat is wider and longer than most mats. It has proprietary AlignForMe markers etched on the mat to assist in alignment for beginner (and advanced) yogis. The mat comes in grey, pink, blue, and green!

Liforme Yoga Mat Cons

  • You can use the alignment cues on it and see if your body is off-center. I found the cues distracting. However, I know plenty of yogis that love this feature. I found myself constantly checking if my feet and hands were placed in the correct position. This distracted me from being in the moment.
  • The mat is very heavy , so it’s not a mat that you will want to carry around with you. Luckily, I practice in a studio where there are mat storage rentals. The included mat bag also has a strap to transport the mat across your torso if you don’t mind toting your mat around.

Liforme Yoga Mat Bag

Liforme Yoga Mat Bag

  • It’s not cheap! At $140 (plus $25 shipping to the US), the Liforme mat is one of the most expensive yoga mats on the market. It’s 25 percent more than its closest competitor, the  Manduka Pro ($100 USD). ‘[Liforme] charges £100 for the mat because it’s a fair price tag based on what it costs to make,’ said James Armitage, creator of the mat. ‘We’re quite aware that the (price) is an eyebrow raiser for some people, but we’re confident that as people come to understand the benefits of the mat, they will realize the real value of the price tag. Our mat is substance over style.’ According to Yoga Journal, people  are  willing to spend top dollars on yoga gear. In 2013, Americans spent $27 billion on yoga products, an 87 percent increase over the previous five years (Yoga Journal, 2013). At the end of the day, the Liforme mat is for the serious yogi who is willing to make the investment in their practice.

Should I Buy a Liforme Mat?

Personally, I love  the Liforme yoga mat . It’s cushioned and has ample grip when dry or wet. The grip is similar to Lululemon ’s “The Mat” without the overpowering smell. This mat is very eco-friendly as it uses body-safe materials. The mat is firm yet cushioning. I noticed that the mat absorbs my sweat, which allows the mat to maintain its grip throughout practice. This is especially helpful for Bikram and power vinyasa (heated) style practices.

Liforme creator, James Armitage suggested that the mat would start to lose its grip after between 300 and 500 uses. I anticipate having to replace the man on an annual basis as I practice daily in a heated room and get very sweaty. And the life expectancy of a Liforme mat shortens the sweatier your practice. The salt in sweat erodes the sticky, top layer of the mat. I recommend using a mat towel to prolong the life of the mat.

I spoke to teachers and practitioners and tested the mat myself. The overall verdict was positive – it’s grippy, has sound eco-credentials, and has unique and helpful (especially to beginners) alignment markers that assist with practice. Not to mention, the design of the mat stands out. The most appealing design element are the four diagonal lines around the center, which act as foot guides for standing poses (i.e. tadasana aka mountain pose).

Since you can place your foot anywhere along the diagonal, this design accommodates a wide variety of alignment possibilities within different yoga styles. This mat is also the best suited for an evolving practice – it offers as much to an advanced student as a beginner.

Where to Buy a Lifeform Yoga Mat

You can purchase a Liforme yoga mat from the following approved retailers.

  • Liforme – Use this link to save 10% off your orders at Liforme.

If you’re a serious yogi and invested in your practice, I highly recommend Liforme. If you don’t have top dollars to dish out just yet, I recommend trying Lululemon ’s The Mat or the Antimicrobial Yoga Mat by Sharklet . It’s not a Liforme mat but is a cheaper alternative for any practitioner (only $68 including free shipping).

Some tips to prolong your Liforme Yoga Mat:

Prior to using your mat, it’s always a great idea to wash it first to get rid the new smell and possibly make the grip better from the start. Each Liforme mat comes with an instruction booklet on how to clean and care for your mat.

Wash your mat after every use to prolong its life and keep it fresh (keep practicing saucha). I use Mrs. Meyers All Purpose cleaner  to clean my mat. I fill a bathtub about 2″, add the cleaner then hand scrub the surface of my mat. I then rinse it while I am showering or just under the faucet.

Hang it over your shower curtain and it should usually dry within a day depending on external and internal temperatures. Roll it up and store it somewhere cool, as natural rubber deteriorates and stiffens in direct sunlight.

Monday 16th of November 2020

I was really enjoying my Yoga journey and decided to treat myself to what I imagined was the best yoga mat on the market. After less than six months of using the mat, the stickiness wore away. I felt extremely uncomfortable using the mat for fear of slipping and injuring myself. Given that I spent about $150 for the product I decided to reach out to the customer service team at Liforme. The team informed me that their yoga mats are supposed to be like a pair of running shoes you replace every 6 to 9 months. Liforme should be upfront with that information and let customers know that is the case and that you are expected to spend another $150 almost immediately for the honor of renting one of their mats. I genuinely loved the mat for the first six to 8 weeks I used it. I wish Liforme stood behind their product and sent me a replacement to see if I got a “lemon”, but they declined to meet my needs. I am back to using my original Gaiam mat which I bought 4 years ago when I started yoga. I recommend you buy 3 or 4 Gaiam mats before renting one of these from Liforme. Cheers. Jack

Liforme Yoga Mat Review: 1 Year Later

liforme travel mat review

Liforme is known for its beautiful yoga mats that also offer a unique and intelligent alignment system, but are they good enough to buy? I purchased their White Gold version and have been practicing on it for 1 year. And so for the purpose of this Liforme yoga mat review, I have done some additional research, and here is what I found.

Liforme yoga mats are some of the best rated yoga mats on the market. They come in a variety of beautiful colors and offer a unique alignment system that can be great for yoga beginners. They offer exceptional grip, even when sweaty, and offer great cushioning due to their rubber base. However, the downside is that they are expensive and not long-lasting.

It’s no surprise this brand is loved by yoga instructors and was even listed as one of the best yoga mats 2022 according to Best Housekeeping .

In this review, I discuss my experiences with my Liforme yoga mat that I’ve had for just over a year now.

The Best Things About a Liforme Yoga Mat

Alignment system – great for yoga beginners.

The key selling point of the Liforme yoga mat is its unique alignment system.

This alignment system is called AlignForMe, and it was actually the main purpose of this brand. It all started in 2004 when James , the creator of Liforme, noticed yoga teachers teaching hand and foot positioning in yoga classes and he wondered:

“Why doesn’t someone put some markers to help me position myself evenly, or help my teacher see where I’m at”?

And the result is a wide array of yoga mats that are helpful, eco-friendly, and beautiful.

I had been practicing on my black Manduka Pro for the past 10 years, and so you can imagine how different this white patterned yoga mat must have felt!

I will admit to absolutely loving practicing on this mat. Even as an experienced yoga practitioner, I actually enjoyed using the alignment system and started noticing tweaks I could make to my practice.

And so in my opinion, the former is great for yoga beginners, but I would also recommend it to more experienced practitioners who can still benefit from the alignment pattern.

Top view of my Liforme White Gold

Beauty – It Comes In Many Beautiful Patterns

The next thing to love about the Liforme original yoga mat is the beautiful colors and patterns it comes in!

I purchased the White Gold design and oh what a beautiful yoga mat it is! I decided on this design as I remember this being the very first pattern I had seen of these mats and I guess it stuck in my mind.

At the time of writing this article, I counted an incredible 29 different colors and equally stunning patterns so you are sure to find something you like.

In fact, they have just added a new version of the yoga mat, one that is fully customizable!

You can now customize your yoga mat and choose the color, and pattern and you can even add your name!

Grip – Great Grip When Wet

One of my favorite parts of the Liforme yoga mat is the incredible gip it offers, making it one of the best non slip yoga mat options on the market. I’m not sure if you have done a yoga practice on a yoga mat without any serious grip, but it can be a real pain in the neck.

As you can imagine, having good grip is one of the most important features of a good quality yoga mat. And so I wanted to try out the grip on this yoga mat. In fact, I’ve done quite a lot of research on yoga mat grip , so I wanted to see how this mat compares.

Interestingly, most mats tend to lose grip once wet. And yet that is where the Liforme yoga mat differs.

With the Liforme, you will know that once you have started to sweat you will get to experience a superior grip during your practice.

The reason is that the Liforme mat comes with a Polyurethane top layer bonded to a natural rubber base layer.

And this is why this is a great yoga mat for those who sweat a lot or go to a hot yoga class as this is a great hot yoga mat.

If you want to see the grip in action, check out my video, where I test the grip with both dry and wet hands:

Eco friendly yoga mats

If you are looking for sustainable yoga mats, then you’ll see that Liforme won’t disappoint. According to their website :

  • “We make our Yoga Mats in the most planet friendly way possible to help conserve this place we all come home. We also support those who are working hard to protect the Earth”.
  • They work with Tree-Nation, which has planted over 7 million trees.
  • They have raised and donated over $250,000 to their official charity partner “Friends of the Earth”

Plus, know that the materials used are eco-friendly. According to their website : “Natural tree Rubber base and Liforme’s unique eco-polyurethane top surface.”

Regarding the White Gold Liforme mat specifically, 3% of every yoga mat sold is donated to Friends of the Earth.

Cleaning – Use soap and water

Cleaning with soap and water is the main recommended method to clean a Liforme yoga mat.

According to  WebMD , if you want to remove dirt and grime and get rid of some germs, then simply clean with soap and hot water.

And so it’s no wonder that Liforme, B Yoga, and Sugarmat all recommend using soap and water to clean your yoga mat.

And so for a regular clean every 5-10 uses wipe your mat with some soap and water. For more information check out my article here: 6 Ways To Clean Your Yoga Mat Naturally

Of course, you could always buy a ready-made yoga mat cleaner spray, or make your very own. For more information check out my article: 7 BEST Yoga Mat Cleaner Sprays: I Tried Them All

And if you’re wondering if you can put your Liforme mat in the washing machine, the short answer is no.

Why? Well, Liforme mats are not designed to be exposed to a high amount of water in this way, we would strongly recommend against putting your mat in the washing machine. For more information read my article: Yoga Mat in the Washing Machine – Yes or No?

Weight – A Comfortable 2.5kg

Yoga mat weight is actually an important factor to consider when looking for a yoga mat.

Why? Well if you are planning on traveling with your yoga mat or want to carry it to and from your local studio, then perhaps it’s best to go for a yoga mat that isn’t too heavy.

And that’s actually where the Liforme comes in. At 2.5kg it’s not too heavy to travel with and carry around with you.

For a bit of comparison, the Liforme is just a bit heavier than the Lululemon Reversible (2.4kg) and a lot lighter than the Manduka Pro (3.4kg).

Plus, if you are looking for a travel yoga mat that is much lighter and easier to travel with, then you can go for the Lifomre travel mat which weighs just 1.6kg.

Keep in mind that neither are really a foldable yoga mat, so you will have to roll them up.

Extra Long Version

Some good news for the taller yogis.

The standard yoga mat size is a length of 68″/173cm and 71″/178cm.

But what happens if you are taller than that and want your head and feet to lie comfortably on the floor when in Savasana?

Well, thankfully Liforme also offers their XL yoga mats which are 2.10m in length.

Liforme Extras

I will add this to the list of things to love about Liforme.

If you are looking for a variety of eco-friendly and beautiful yoga mats to add to your collection, then you won’t be disappointed.

Liforme has a variety of yoga accessories:

  • Travel yoga mats
  • XL yoga mats
  • Yoga pads (for handstand lovers)
  • Yoga gifts such as water bottles

And of course, they all come in beautiful designs!

The Worst Things About a Liforme Yoga Mat

As much as I do really like Liforme, it still has its issues.

It’s My Most Expensive Yoga Mat

A big hang-up with the Liforme mat isn’t a cheap yoga mat. Of course, I knew this when I bought this mat. I knew this was going to be my most expensive yoga mat.

But you know what? In my opinion, most times expensive yoga mats are worth it.

Why? Well, this one offers an alignment system that can be helpful for beginners. It’s eco-friendly, it’s pretty and its rubber base offers great cushioning (ok I would have liked it to be a bit thicker as I explain later).

If you get one of the more basic versions, it comes in at $140, while the fanciest mats (like my White Gold) come in at $190. Super expensive, I know. So if you’re looking to treat yourself, then know that you’re getting a really good quality eco-friendly yoga mat.

It’s Not The Most Long-Lasting of Yoga Mats

Another disadvantage of the Liforme mat is that it is not the most long-lasting yoga mat out there.

Ok, nothing can compete with the Manduka Pro and its lifetime guarantee. However, for $140-$190, I would have liked it if I knew it would last more than 4 years.

Check out a comparison video I did on Liforme vs Manduka Pro:

Thickness – 4.2mm Thick

One further disadvantage of the Liforme is that it comes in just one main thickness option. And that is 4.2mm thick. To put this into perspective, the manduka prolite yoga mat is 4.7mm thick , while the very popular Manduka Pro is 6mm thick .

Now, yoga mat thickness is a very important factor to look into when choosing a yoga mat . And so it is not the most thick yoga mat out there.

For me, the best thickness of a yoga mat is 6mm. Why? Well, it is thick enough so you don’t feel the floor beneath you, your joints are protected, your hands and feet don’t sink into the mat.

This particular mat has a rubber base. And so the 4.2mm Liforme can feel like enough cushioning, however, if you have sensitive joints or if you like thick yoga mats (like me) then you may feel like this 4.2mm isn’t enough.

Ok, let me point out that the Liforme also comes in a 2mm thick travel version. However, in my opinion, this isn’t really a thickness to consider for your main yoga mat.

And so if you are also looking for a travel mat that is light enough to travel around with, then yes, this is a good option! Unfortunately if you want a 6mm thick Liforme yoga mat, then unfortunately for time being at least, there ain’t that option.

Not a Latex Free Yoga Mat

The Liforme yoga mat is not guaranteed to be latex free. According to their website:

“The bottom layer of our mats is made from natural rubber, and natural rubber does contain latex. However, our top surface does not contain latex. We therefore urge caution to any Yogi who suffers from a latex allergy when using the Liforme Mats, and recommend you check with a medical practitioner as to the extent of your allergy and as to whether using a mat with even a rubber base layer could be an issue for you.”

Conclusion of Liforme Yoga Mat

Liforme is not perfect, but it is still a terrific buy. If you are thinking of settling for a cheaper yoga mat you may want to reconsider.

In my opinion, the added price it takes to get the superior quality of a Liforme is well worth it making it one of the best yoga mats 2022.

I really love the grip (with both dry and wet hands).

Not to mention the fact that its absolutely beautiful and a pleasure to practice on!

My biggest complaint is that it’s rather expensive and I would have liked it to be just a little bit thicker. But in my opinion, this is a small price to pay when juxtaposed with the plethora of great features.

Related Questions

As a general rule, your Liforme yoga mat should last between 1-2 years, especially if you practice a dynamic form of yoga every day. If you practice twice a week then your Liforme may last 4-5 years. The grip is what will start to deteriorate and once your hands start slipping you will know you need to replace your mat.

Yes, the White Liforme mat does get dirty. This can be expected given that it is a white yoga mat. However, it is easy to clean so the stains don’t need a lot of effort to be removed.

The Liforme is a better mat compared to the Lululemon. Firstly, Liforme offers a unique alignment system that can help yoga beginners. It is eco-friendly and it comes in beautiful colors. Plus, it lasts longer than the Lululemon. However, the Lululemon is more affordable and offers better cushioning.

Yes, the Liforme yoga mat is a very good yoga mat. It offers an intelligent alignment system that can help yoga beginners and more experienced practitioners. It is eco-friendly and comes in beautiful colors and designs. Its main drawback is its high price point.

  2. I tried the Liforme yoga mat. Here's what I thought. (Review)

This yoga mat is also pretty thin, at only .16 inches. That's a fraction thinner than my wife's old Lulu mat, but it's not among the thinnest mats on the market. Weight wise, the Liforme is definitely on the heavier side, weighing in at 5.51 pounds. It's dense and solid, but not overly bulking.
