India's Travel & Tourism Boom: Projections Show 58 Million New Jobs by 2033

In the coming 9 years, new jobs are also expected across emerging cities/locations like Gujarat, Lakshadweep, and West Bengal.

Fuelled by India becoming one of the world’s top travel destinations, the travel & tourism ecosystem in India has registered remarkable growth post the pandemic. Serving as a crucial source of foreign exchange, travel, and tourism contributed Rs.15.9 trillion (US$ 191.25 billion) to India’s economy in 2022 and was estimated at Rs. 16.5 trillion for 2023, said the latest assessment by talent solutions provider NLB Services.

The growing synergy of the sector has led to steadfast employment generation across the country both in Tier I and Tier II locations, NLB Services added.

Jobs During Covid-19 Pandemic

NLB Services said that in the pandemic year 2020, the tourism sector accounted for 39 million jobs, constituting 8% of the nation’s total workforce.

Post the pandemic recovery tenure, this sector was one of the sectors that saw the quickest recovery. Incidentally, talent demand in tourism recorded a 44% spike in August 2023, and 1.6 million additional jobs were expected to be added within CY 2023.

With the continued growth momentum, the travel & tourism sector is all set to add 58.2 million jobs by 2033 throughout the country, it added.

Growth Centres

From a location perspective, the top five states attracting domestic tourists so far include Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.

Top cities driving the increase in hiring include Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Kochi. In tier 2 cities, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh.

Top Roles In Demand

Prominent job profiles that will continue to be in demand experiencing y-o-y surges include sales (18% surge), business development (17% surge), chefs (15% surge), travel consultants (15% surge), tour operators (15% surge), travel agents (15% surge), hoteliers (15% surge), guides (20% surge), wildlife experts (12% surge), and transportation providers (15% surge), etc.

Looking at the experience level, as of March 2024, 50% of online job postings in the travel and tourism sector were for freshers or entry-level positions (0-3 years of experience). Intermediate-level roles (4-6 years of experience) and top management positions (15+ years of experience) each represented a 30% and 20% share of the total demand, respectively.

The travel & tourism sector is also undergoing massive transformation, with many new subsets like destination wedding travel, religious tourism, international tourism, adventure sports tourism, ecotourism, cultural tourism, and rural tourism emerging in the new decade. Another interesting emergence is that of sustainable tourism which has observed substantial global adoption, with a market value reaching $180 billion, NLB Services added.

Companies are also adopting the gig model to address talent shortages and meet the growing demand from tourists. Since January 2023, there has been a 14% increase in gig roles within the travel and tourism sector, encompassing positions such as translators, photographers, and tour guides and this is further expected to increase by 18-20% in the next 2 years.

Nonetheless, this is a big part of the tourism industry, and while it is an example of niche tourism, the sector is growing fast! There are lots of types of activities and types of travel that fall under its umbrella. This is becoming popular because it can give people a feeling of empowerment, independence, and a closer connection to nature. Whether it's going on animal safaris, rafting through white water, or ascending tall summits ".

"India's adventure tourism industry is expected to grow significantly in the coming years due to the government's aggressive plans to make the nation a global hub for adventure travel. India is preparing to welcome millions of local and foreign adventure seekers, with targets including a USD 3 trillion tourist economy by 2047, with adventure tourism contributing USD 800 billion to this goal. A plethora of professional opportunities within the sector are anticipated as a result of this growth trajectory" says Rama.

This entails welcoming 20 million foreign tourists, 80 million domestic adventure travellers, and generating USD 90 billion in foreign exchange. Ultimately, the rapid growth of this sector is going to offer a range of career and job opportunities in India.

Jeremy Clarkson is banned from India and another two countries

Jeremy clarkson has revealed all when it comes to his international travel - or rather, his inability.

He's now a full-time farmer and star of Amazon Prime Video's Clarkson's Farm .

But life for Jeremy Clarkson wasn't always so quaint and rural, with the former Top Gear frontman revealing he is in fact banned from India and a couple of other countries .

The 64-year-old Yorkshireman travelled the world on the BBC car show and then did similar later in Prime Video's The Grand Tour .

And in doing so, it's safe to say he didn't please everybody.

Away from farm life, Clarkson currently presents Who Wants To Be A Millionaire over on ITV1 and ITVX .

It was during one episode that the television presenter reveals he wasn't welcome over in India.

Clarkson revealed all while asking a question to one of his Millionaire contestants. He asked: "The Hindu god Ganesh is traditionally depicted as having the head of which animal?"

With the contest pretty perplexed by the question, he used one of his lifelines to ask the host for help.

With Clarkson not 100 percent sure, the contestant opted to ask the audience.

But it was this exchange that reminded him he is actually banned from India; a country with a significant Hindu population.

After helping the contestant guess the correct answer - elephant, if you were wondering - Clarkson spent a bit of time talking about his India ban as well as his ban from two other countries.

He said as the audience laughed: "But weirdly I’m actually banned from India... um... I... I really am.

"I tried to go there last year and was refused a visa.

“So that’s Turkey, Argentina… not that anybody would want to go back there and India."

And the reason why Clarkson is banned from India? We don't quite know, as he's never specifically answered the query.

There's not a definite answer as to why Clarkson's wasn't allowed in the South Asian country but he did go there in 2011 for the Top Gear India Special, with a 'trade mission'.

While some viewers may have found it hilarious, his sense of humour didn't go down all to well with the people in government. But there's also a chance his visa was denied simply because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

With Turkey, there's a possibility Clarkson's ban is down to another of the Top Gear specials, when they went to the Middle East back in 2010.

He, Hammond and May didn't particularly hang around in Turkey but some of their comments about roads and travel advice upset the country.

A popular news channel there, NTV, said 'exaggerated remarks' were made and the programme: "Disparaged Turkey. The presenters wore bulletproof vests and helmets and said that the southeast of Turkey should be considered a war zone.”

Clarkson's problems with Argentina may be a little more clear for Top Gear fans as the Patagonia Special in 2014 featured some rather memorable scenes.

As his vehicle, he used a Porsche with a 'H982 FKL' number plate which was very badly received by locals.

Although it was apparently coincidental, locals decided it was in reference to the 1982 Falklands War and during their journey, the car was attacked with stones and even pickaxes.

So it doesn't look like the people of India or Argentina and Turkey can expect to see Clarkson zooming by anytime soon.

The travel and tourism sector is poised for significant growth, expected to create 5.82 crore jobs in India by 2033. Despite challenges, the sector saw a quick recovery post-pandemic. In 2020, it accounted for 39 million jobs, constituting 8% of the nation's workforce. Talent demand in tourism surged by 44% in August 2023, with 1.6 million additional jobs expected in 2023. This growth trend is projected to continue, with the sector set to add 58.2 million jobs by 2033.

With a continued growth momentum, the travel and tourism sector is all set to add 5.82 crore jobs across the country by 2033, a top executive of global technology and digital talent solutions provider NLB Services said on Monday. "The growing synergy of the sector has led to steadfast employment generation across the country both in tier I and II locations. In the pandemic year 2020, the tourism sector accounted for 39 million jobs, constituting 8 per cent of the nation's total workforce. Post the pandemic recovery tenure, this was one of the sectors that saw the quickest recovery," NLB Services CEO Sachin Alug said in a statement. Advt Incidentally, talent demand in tourism recorded a 44 per cent spike in August 2023, and 1.6 million additional jobs were expected to be added in the calendar year 2023, he said. With the continued growth momentum, the travel and tourism sector is all set to add 58.2 million jobs by 2033, throughout the country, he added. Serving as a crucial source of foreign exchange, travel, and tourism contributed Rs 15.9 lakh crore (USD 191.25 billion) to India 's economy in 2022 and was estimated at Rs 16.5 lakh crore for 2023, he noted. From the city perspective, Alug said, the top five states attracting domestic tourists so far include Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. Top cities driving the increase in hiring in the sector include Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Kochi, he said adding that in tier II cities, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh, he stated. Alug said the prominent job profiles that will continue to be in demand experiencing year-on-year surges include sales (18 per cent), business development (17 per cent), chefs (15 per cent), travel consultants (15 per cent), tour operators (15 per cent), travel agents (15 per cent), hoteliers (15 per cent), guides (20 per cent), wildlife experts (12 per cent), and transportation providers (15 per cent), among others. Advt He said the travel and tourism sector is also undergoing transformation, with many new subsets like destination wedding travel, religious tourism, international tourism, adventure sports tourism, ecotourism, cultural tourism, and rural tourism emerging in the new decade. Another interesting emergence is that of sustainable tourism which has observed substantial global adoption, with a market value reaching USD 180 billion. He further stated that companies are adopting the gig model to address talent shortages and meet the growing demand in the sector. Since January 2023, there has been a 14 per cent increase in gig roles within the travel and tourism sector, encompassing positions such as translators, photographers, and tour guides and this is further expected to increase by 18-20 per cent in the next 2 years, Alug added.

US travel sector faces long wait for China tourism to hit 2019 highs

China gradually began lifting travel-related restrictions from January 2023 and fully lifted group tour restrictions in August last year, but the resultant rise in Chinese arrivals to nearly 1.1 million remains 60 per cent below 2019 levels, according to data from the U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO).

Trending destinations for Middle East travellers in 2024; see list

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, India and UAE remain the top travel destinations in 2024, revealed Wego, the online travel marketplace and travel app

Wego, the online travel marketplace and travel app for flight bookings and searches, revealed the list of global destinations that are popular with Middle East travellers, on May 6, the first day of the Arabian Travel Market 2024.

The insights were based on flight and hotel data from Wego users for the first four months of the year.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia have once again asserted their dominance as the top global destinations for international travel among MENA travellers in 2024, retaining their respective number one and two positions.

India held steady as the third most preferred destination for Middle Eastern travellers.

Top source markets

Egypt and India are both major source markets for foreign talent and labour for the Gulf region and have consistently held the top spots for international air travel. Going as far back as 2014, Egypt has consistently either come in at number one or two, with India invariably taking the third spot since 2016, Wego revealed.

While the top positions remained relatively stable, there were notable movements within the top 10 and beyond. Pakistan notably gained traction, climbing two spots in the rankings.

Additionally, Russia experienced a significant jump of nine spots globally, signaling its growing appeal among Middle Eastern travellers.

Popular regional rivalries

In the Middle East , Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE maintained their positions at the top, with Pakistan making a notable advancement to the fourth spot.

Qatar and Oman also saw gains, reflecting ongoing shifts in regional travel preferences.

Commenting on the trends, Mamoun Hmedan, chief business officer at Wego, said: “We are excited to see Egypt emerge as the leading destination for travellers in the MENA region during Q1 2024.

“According to Wego’s data, Egypt stands out as a favored choice among travelers seeking unique cultural experiences and diverse attractions. Meanwhile, the UK retains its position as the preferred European destination for Middle Eastern travellers.”

European destinations that lead the list

The UK continues to reign as the dominant European destination for Middle East travellers, with Italy rapidly gaining ground and securing the second position.

Italy, among the most popular tourist countries in the world, has continuously been among the top ten European destinations for Middle East travellers, 2024 is the first year that the reached the top three, coming in at number two.

While Eastern European countries such as Azerbaijan and Georgia experienced slight declines in popularity, larger Western European markets saw gains, indicating a broader trend of European destinations reclaiming traction.

Asian destinations that are popular choices

Thailand maintained its position as the top Asia Pacific destination for MENA travellers, solidifying its lead over Indonesia.

Vietnam made a notable advancement, overtaking South Korea in the rankings.

A recurring trend from 2023 persisted in 2024, with closer, regional destinations gaining favor over more distant ones.

Countries such as Morocco, Indonesia, and the US experienced declines in rankings, while regional destinations like Kuwait, Pakistan, and Jordan continued to ascend.

In 2024, Qatar broke into top 10 for the first time taking the place of Morocco which dropped two notches down to number 12.
