How to get WhatsApp on iPad

Lewis Painter

WhatsApp is an incredibly popular iPhone app, connecting more than a billion active members around the world every day. It lets you send messages to friends, or groups of friends, over Wi-Fi or 4G/5G and make savings on your phone bill. (Of course, you may end up paying for data if you go over your limit, so don’t go crazy!)

Unfortunately, right now WhatsApp is only available for iPhone–there isn’t a version of the app for the iPad despite the fact that WhatsApp boss Will Cathcart (in January 2022) acknowledged in an interview that people had been asking for an iPad app for a long time . Cathcart revealed that much of the infrastructure to develop an iPad app is already in place, but he made no immediate promises.

Things could be about to change though. In September 2023 a WhatsApp beta (version 23.19.1.71) seems to include an iPad-compatible beta version!

WhatsApp beta for iPad is available on TestFlight and can be installed on the iPad if you are part of WhatsApp beta testing program. If you want to install the WhatsApp for iPad beta read this .

If you aren’t part of the WhatsApp beta, don’t despair. In this tutorial, we show you how to use WhatsApp on the iPad using WhatsApp Web. This service connects to the WhatsApp account on your iPhone (or Android device) and forwards the messages on to your iPad, allowing you to send and receive messages, pictures and videos. It’s not quite native WhatsApp on the iPad, but it’s the next best thing.

WhatsApp for iPad release date

While right now there is no WhatsApp app on the iPad, but it does look like there is one coming soon. As of September 2023, WhatsApp beta testers can try out a WhatsApp for iPad beta.

Over the years there have been many indications that WhatsApp would eventually come to iPad, including Will Cathcart’s revelation above that people have been asking for one, but this beta looks like the most promising evidence yet.

Back in August 2021 there were reports that the team at Meta/Facebook-owned WhatsApp was working on a WhatsApp for iPad app. That news came via WABetaInfo, the Twitter (now X) feed for Whatsapp beta news:

• Is WhatsApp for iPad a web app? No, it's a native app! • Will WhatsApp for iPad work independently? Yes. • Is WhatsApp for iPad already available? No. • WhatsApp beta for iPad? If you have WhatsApp beta for iOS, you will automatically have the iPad version in the future. https://t.co/aQYBBtW7Sb — WABetaInfo (@WABetaInfo) August 21, 2021

There is also a WhatsApp Desktop version. See: How to get WhatsApp on Mac for more information about that.

How to get WhatsApp on iPad using WhatsApp Web

Whatsapp for iPad

While there is not a WhatsApp app for iPad yet, there are ways to get your WhatsApp on your Apple tablet.

Follow these steps to get WhatsApp on an iPad:

  • Open Safari on your iPad and head to web.whatsapp.com .
  • Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.
  • In Whatsapp tap on Settings.
  • Tap on Linked Devices.
  • Tap Link a Device.
  • Use your iPhone to scan the QR code and pair with your iPhone.
  • A web page should now load and display all your recent WhatsApp messages, along with any media or voice notes.

Be aware that there are a few limitations when using WhatsApp this way. Most importantly, unlike when the service is used on a Mac or PC, notifications from web browsers aren’t supported on iOS/iPadOS. You won’t be notified of new messages.

Apart from that and a few small bugs, however, the service is pretty easy to use and a great alternative for WhatsApp users keen to access the service on iPad.

WhatsApp Web is a free and easy way to access the WhatsApp service on your iPad. Although you won’t get notifications (as you would when using the service on Mac or PC), it’s a great way to easily access your messages on a tablet.

When will WhatsApp finally work on the iPad ?

Just tried to follow these instructions to add WhatsApp to an iPad, but the WhatsApp website doesn’t show a QR code. Used their download button, but the downloaded dmg file isn’t opening on the iPad.

Any suggestions how to do this without the QR code?

Superb advice – thanks very much

Super handy and super helpful, thank you for the step by step guide!

My phones screen broke while traveling how do I access whatsapp on my iPad without being able to scan a QR code?

I’ve been using Messenger for WhatsApp on my IPad and it MOSTLY works great. The only drawback, and it’s significant, is that I have to re-link it to my WhatsApp account with the QR scan…at least once a week. Don’t know why that is, and it’s pretty annoying, but it’s the only issue I’m having.

Connected easily with IPhone.

instructions work great! thank you

Followed these instructions and it worked great to add whatsapp. The only thing I had a bit of trouble with was adding it to the home screen. I didn’t have an ellipsis in my address bar. I clicked the first button to the right of the address bar and the same menu popped up that is shown above.

Thanks for showing the way. Followed your guidelines & it worked.

I’m using this method for so long Sometimes browser does not want to open whatsapp web even if you activate Desktop view But alot of times it works.

One can use WhatsApp Web App available on Microsoft Store on Windows 10 or/and via any Browser and on other versions of Windows as explained above. The Browser need not be only Safari. My experience is that there is no Lag. But if anyone has joined the Multi Device Beta like me, not only Occasional, instead, there is a long Lag.

How to Use WhatsApp on iPad While Waiting for the Official App

WhatsApp has introduced several new features on its mobile app over the years. From support for multiple devices to the ability to undo deleted messages , the messaging app has come a long way. However, one big miss we fail to wrap our heads around is the lack of a native iPad app. This might make you wonder — how to use WhatsApp on your iPad? Don’t worry; even if there’s no official way (yet), there are some workarounds.

How to Use WhatsApp on iPad

If you work from the convenience of your iPad and want to continue your conversations on the go, using WhatsApp on your iPad can be vital. After all, the platform has become a means of global communication. So, tag along to understand how to set up WhatsApp on your iPad and use it to send and receive messages seamlessly.

Is There a Dedicated WhatsApp App for iPad

Frankly speaking, no. There is presently no dedicated WhatsApp app for the iPad. However, a test version has been seeded to a few beta testers. You can read more about the beta version in the latter portions of our article. The fact that there is a beta version indicates that a stable version is in the works and should come out sooner or later.

image 515

A dedicated application is a boon. Using a full-fledged app in comparison to a web version is always better. This is especially true in the case of WhatsApp since the web version strips away the possibility of phone calls, video calls, etc. Even notifications can be a hassle with WhatsApp web. Nonetheless, you’ll have to give up on some features when using WhatsApp on the iPad because we will use the web version of the service.

How to Use WhatsApp on iPad

Let’s cut to the chase. There are two ways to use WhatsApp on your iPad. The first is where good ‘ol WhatsApp Web comes to the rescue. In the latter method, we’ll show you how to try and get hold of a beta version of the app. Read on to find out how to use both of these methods.

Method 1: WhatsApp Web

Let’s talk about how to set up and use WhatsApp Web on your iPad. Get hold of your iPad and follow along.

Step 1: On your iPad, head to Safari or any other web browser. Then, type web.whatsapp.com in the address bar and hit Enter. If viewing this article on your iPad, click on the button below.

Open WhatsApp Web

Step 2: Before you head further, open WhatsApp on your phone. Head to Settings > Link Devices and then tap Link Device. You can then place your phone over the QR Code on your iPad to enable WhatsApp on your iPad.

Tap Linked Device

Note: You cannot use WhatsApp on your iPad without an account on your phone. Hence, you must ensure you have a phone with a SIM to run WhatsApp on your iPad. Once linked, though, you can continue using WhatsApp on your iPad even if you don’t use it on your phone.

Step 3: Now, scan the QR code on your iPad’s screen with your phone. Once you scan the QR code, follow the instructions on your phone to set up WhatsApp Web. Then, access WhatsApp Web. Your chats will be displayed on the left pane.

Use iPad

Once you’re done setting up the web version of WhatsApp, sending and receiving messages is pretty much the same as on your phone.

Method 2: Beta For WhatsApp via TestFlight

A beta version of WhatsApp for iPad was floated on TestFlight. This was first done around the final months of 2023. However, the beta testing program is presently full. There is a possibility that the beta channel will open up from time to time. Hence, it is wise to keep tabs if you’re purely an app-based person. You can access the invite to join the beta program using the link below.

If a beta version ever becomes available, install it like a normal app on your iPad and sign up for the service using your mobile number.

However, there is no formal indication about the release of the stable version of WhatsApp for iPad. We’re hopeful that the beta testing phase will end soon with a stable WhatsApp app for the iPad as the end result.

Bonus: How to Create a Home Screen Shortcut for WhatsApp Web

While notifications will be a big miss when using WhatsApp Web, you can set a shortcut on your home screen for ease of use. Whenever you want to access WhatsApp on your iPad, tap on this icon instead of going to the browser and punching in the web address.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp Web using Safari on your iPad. Now, choose the share icon. Then, tap Add Bookmark.

Select Bookmark Sign

Step 2: In the new screen, select Add.

Select Add Bookmark

Step 3: You can access the shortcut on your home page.

FAQs for Using WhatsApp on iPad

Yes. You can send texts simultaneously with your iPad and iPhone. As soon as you send texts via one platform, it automatically reflects on the other.

An app-based interface always outweighs a web setup. An application is smoother to use. Further, WhatsApp web has its disadvantages. For instance, there is no built-in notification system. You cannot place or receive phone calls. As a matter of fact, you cannot place video calls on WhatsApp Web. However, till a stable version of WhatsApp is launched for iPad, WhatsApp web is the only refuge.

Well, there are several messaging applications that have been developed, but WhatsApp enjoys a huge market share in several countries. If you wish for an alternative to smoothen the knots between your iPad and iPhone — one option can be Apple’s Messages app. Apart from that, you can explore Signal or Telegram . Both these services have dedicated iPad apps.

Use WhatsApp on All Devices

WhatsApp connects billions of people across the world. For users who work from their iPads, WhatsApp is a big miss. However, we hope our methods come to your rescue and help you use WhatsApp on your iPad. Happy WhatsApp-ing!

How to Use WhatsApp on iPad

Despite strong competition from the likes of Telegram and Signal, WhatsApp remains the most popular mobile messaging platform by a mile, connecting over a billion active users around the world every day.

Whatsapp Feature

While the iPad app has yet to to launch, it is already possible to use WhatsApp on an ‌iPad‌ via the web without the iPhone associated with your account having to be connected to the internet. Keep reading to learn how it works.

WhatsApp on iPad

Previously, the WhatsApp mobile app was required to authenticate an account used on another device, such as a computer, and it used a QR code to link a user account to a web browser. While that initial link is still required, the connected phone that has the WhatsApp app on it is no longer required once the link has been made, which means you can continue to use WhatsApp on your ‌iPad‌ without needing your smartphone.

The following steps show you how to link your WhatsApp account to your ‌iPad‌ using the service's new Multi-Device support, currently in beta.

  • Launch WhatsApp on your ‌iPhone‌.
  • Select Settings -> Linked Devices .
  • Tap Multi-Device Beta , then tap the blue Join Beta button.

whatsapp multi device support

After following these steps your device will be linked to your WhatsApp account, and you'll be able to access WhatsApp on your ‌iPad‌ to send and receive messages and view chat threads, without needing to rely on your phone being connected to the internet.

Bear in mind that it's not currently possible to delete WhatsApp messages or conversation threads from your ‌iPad‌. It's also worth noting that you won't get new message notifications on your ‌iPad‌ when you're not using the web app. On the plus side, personal calls and messages remain end-to-end encrypted across devices.

If you don't use your ‌iPhone‌ for over 14 days, your ‌iPad‌ will be disconnected. Lastly, given that the feature is still in beta, WhatsApp cautions that the performance and quality of its service may be affected, although happily, users can leave the beta at any time.

How to set up and use WhatsApp on iPad

Even though reports of WhatsApp launching a native iPad app have been making the rounds for several years , there is no official WhatsApp app for iPadOS yet. However there is a workaround to use WhatsApp on iPad.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of installing and using WhatsApp on your iPad, so you can stay connected with your friends and family on the big screen.

WhatsApp on iPad

Before you begin: You must have activated WhatsApp on an iPhone or Android phone, as you can’t sign up for a new WhatsApp account on iPad.

1) Open Safari on your iPad and visit web.whatsapp.com .

2) You will see a QR code that you have to scan using your smartphone:

  • If you have an iPhone: Open the WhatsApp or WA Business app and go to its Settings > Linked Devices > Link a Device > enter your iPhone passcode.
  • If you have an Android phone: Open WhatsApp or WA Business app > tap the three dots icon from the top right > Linked devices > Link a device > use your device passcode or biometrics authentication to open the scanner.

3) Scan the QR code you see on your iPad screen.

Your WhatsApp app on iPhone and WhatsApp Web on your iPad will be linked, and you will see all your chats inside Safari on your iPad. From here, you can send and receive messages and files.

Using WhatsApp on iPad

Using WhatsApp in iPad web browser

1. Chat: Tap the conversation from the left side to select it, and enter your message in the ‘ Type a message ‘ box. Tip: Pinch in with two fingers on the big iPad keyboard to make it smaller and place it anywhere .

2. Start a new chat: Hit the messages icon from the top and select a saved contact. These aren’t the contacts saved to your iPad’s Contacts app, but they are synced from your phone and only appear in this WhatsApp Web browser tab.

3. See WhatsApp Status or Stories: Hit the circle icon from the top left to see statuses put up by people in your address book.

4. Search for messages: Use the search bar from the top left to find messages from all your chats. Or, hit the search button from an ongoing chat to see specific texts only from that person’s conversation.

5. See the person’s profile: Open the chat, tap their name from the top, or hit the three dots icon from the top right and select ‘Contact info.’

6. Create a group chat: Tap the three dots button from the top of the left sidebar and choose New group .

7. Archive, mute, delete chat, pin, mark as unread, or block a chat: Tap an ongoing conversation once or twice from the left side until you see a tiny arrow. Now, tap this arrow to take the desired action.

Manage a chat in WhatsApp on iPad

8. Enable disappearing messages: Open the chat on WhatsApp for iPad, hit the three dots icon, select disappearing messages and pick a duration . After that, tap the back arrow button from the top to return to the chat screen.

9. Delete or forward messages of a chat: Open the chat > tap the three dots icon from the top right > Select messages > tap the messages > now use the delete icon  or the forward arrow icon .

Send PDFs, PPTs, and other documents

  • Select the documents icon and pick Choose Files .

  • Tap to select one or more images and hit Add .
  • Finally, tap the green send button.

Tip: Use drag and drop

  • Make sure the WhatsApp chat is open in Safari, and then do one of the following:
  • Split View: Enter Split View with Safari and another app like Files or Photos.
  • Slide Over: You can also open the other app as a Slide Over window with Safari in the background.
  • Now select the file from the other app and drop it over the open WhatsApp chat window.
  • Finally, hit the send button.

Drag and drop file to send it via WhatsApp

Besides that, you can also use the regular drag & drop method. This involves dragging a file out of the Files app or Photos app and then using another hand to open Safari and dropping the dragged files there.

Add the WhatsApp icon to your Home Screen

  • Open WhatsApp Web inside Safari on iPad.
  • Tap the share button and hit Add to Home Screen .
  • Edit the name if needed and tap Add .

You will now see the WhatsApp icon on your iPad Home Screen .

  • Every time you tap this Home Screen icon, it will open WhatsApp Web and reload/refresh the page.
  • For the most part, I recommend tapping the Safari icon on your iPad Dock or Home Screen. It should show any new messages; if not, you can always refresh the page.

A few good things about using WhatsApp on iPad

No reliance on your phone: Once you set up WhatsApp on your iPad, you will receive new messages here, even if your phone is switched off or not connected to the internet.

You get almost all the features: Using WhatsApp on the web/iPad doesn’t restrict you for the most part. As evident from the above steps, you can send files, photos, and contacts, create polls, see stories, access starred messages and more.

Main drawbacks

No chat notification: Apple is still working on allowing notifications in Safari on iPhone and iPad . So, you won’t get notified of new WhatsApp chats on iPad. And since Chrome, Firefox, and all iOS browsers are forced by Apple to use their WebKit engine (the tech that powers Safari), no such popular browsers can send notifications.

No audio or video call: You can’t make calls using WhatsApp Web on your iPad.

Repeated refresh: iPadOS may freeze or kill the open WhatsApp Web Safari tab to manage RAM. Because of this, you may have to reload WhatsApp in the browser frequently.

Can’t publish stories: Though you can view statuses/stories of others, you can’t add your own using iPad.

Several account settings are missing: You don’t have access to privacy, chat, account, and other WhatsApp settings on your iPad.

Why you may still want to use WhatsApp on iPad

Transfer files: If you receive files on WhatsApp on your Android phone but want to read them comfortably on your larger iPad screen, then you can set up WhatsApp Web on your iPad and access the files there. If you use WhatsApp on iPhone, you can easily AirDrop them to iPad.

Ease: You can put your iPad horizontally on a stand to make it easier to chat using the big iPad screen.

Take a phone break: You can switch off your phone for any reason but still get to use WhatsApp.

Alternatives

iMessage: The Messages app is built into iPadOS, and it lets you send and receive iMessages. Besides that, you can also enable SMS support for your iPad’s Messages app .

Third-party chat apps: Unlike WhatsApp, most other chat services offer native, well-built apps for iPad. Telegram , Signal , Viber , LINE , Facebook Messenger , Skype , Discord , Microsoft Teams , and Slack are some of the most notable options.

Note: WhatsApp is available for Android tablets .

About third-party WhatsApp apps for iPad

You will see several resembling apps when you search for “ WhatsApp ” on the iPad App Store. All these are unofficial apps that use WhatsApp Web inside a wrapper. We recommend you refrain from using any of them as there are no real advantages, and they may lead to security or privacy issues.

How to use whatsapp on ipad.

Using the WhatsApp Web service you can get the messenger working on iPad, and add a shortcut to your home screen too.

WhatsApp has been a mainstay of the social media world in recent years, a handy messaging platform that can actually flex to become a pretty adaptable network if you like.

One area where it's been lacking though, is in native apps for tablets - specifically, there still isn't a dedicated app for the iPad (although one is apparently on the way), making it a bit of a challenge to get WhatsApp working on an Apple tablet. If you're keen to do just that, there is a workaround that we'll lay out below, though.

How to get WhatsApp on iPad

Your first step in getting this service working on your iPad is to get logged in to your messages. Here's how you do that:

  • Open Safari (or any other web browser) on your iPad.
  • Type web.whatsapp.com in the address bar at the top.

Now you should see a screen with 'Use WhatsApp on your computer' on it, and a QR code on the screen. Depending on whether you're using an iPhone or an Android phone , the process is slightly different for actually getting the service connected. Open your chats screen on your iPhone or Android phone.

On Android: tap the three-dot menu in the top right, and tap ' Linked Devices '

On iPhone: tap 'Settings' in the bottom right, and then ' Linked Devices '.

  • Tap ' Link Device '
  • Confirm using your authentication - whether that be fingerprint scan or FaceID scan
  • It'll ask you for permission to access your camera - accept it
  • Point your camera at the QR code on the iPad screen.

It'll take a short while to load everything, but once done, you'll see your chats right there. The interface loads very much like a standard WhatsApp chats view, right there in your iPad's browser.

Add a web app shortcut to your home screen

If you want to mimic the app experience, you can add a shortcut to the service right on your iPad home screen. That way you have a WhatsApp icon on your home screen that looks just like a regular app icon. To add it, follow the instructions below:

  • The share icon in the top, to the right of the URL bar. It looks like a square with an arrow pointing upwards.
  • Find 'Add to Home Screen' and select it.
  • Give the shortcut a name like 'WhatsApp' and save it.

Now you'll have a shortcut for WhatsApp Web on your iPad Home Screen. You can tap it to launch the service whenever you like, almost like a native app.

Once loaded, it even looks and feels like the app. The only difference being, you won't get notifications like an app when new messages come through on your phone. You'll have to open it, wait for it to refresh and then you'll see new messages.

So there you go - for now that's the way to get WhatsApp on your iPad, and get it feeling - almost - like having a native app on your screen.

Will there be a WhatsApp app on iPad?

While the above steps are a very solid solution for now, there have been rumours for years that WhatsApp (and its parent company Meta) will release an actual native version of its app for iPad.

That looks closer to reality than ever before thanks to recent betas that have actually included iPad compatibility for the first time, so we're now expecting that the app gets an iPad version sooner rather than later.

Designed with iPhones and Android smartphones in mind, it unfortunately doesn't have a dedicated iPad app. That will hopefully change in the future, but for now, here are some workarounds on how to download WhatsApp on iPad and safely use it.

You need to already have WhatsApp set up on your iPhone or Android smartphone.

Does WhatsApp Work on iPad?

The WhatsApp iOS app doesn't work on iPad. It's only available on the App Store for iPhone users. It won't work on any iPad right now, until WhatsApp decides to launch an iPad version of the app.

However, you can get WhatsApp to work via the web interface and a small workaround method that works via the iPad's Safari browser. It's not perfect, but it's an option.

How to Set up WhatsApp on iPad

Setting up WhatsApp Web on your iPad doesn't take long. Here's how to get get started.

Any iPad with an internet connection will work with WhatsApp Web, although the instructions are slightly different depending on the age of your iPad.

Open Safari and go to web.whatsapp.com .

The website will display a QR code to pair it with your iPhone.

If it doesn't, you may have an older iPad which requires slightly different instructions further down.

On your smartphone, open WhatsApp.

Tap Settings > WhatsApp Web/Desktop .

Scan the QR code displayed on your iPad.

The website will reload and display all your WhatsApp messages.

Remember to log out once you've finished using the site.

How to Set up WhatsApp on an Older iPad

Older iPads use iOS rather than iPadOS which means its settings are slightly different. If your iPad doesn't automatically display the QR code when you go to web.whatsapp.com, here's what to do.

iPads that don't support iPadOS include the original iPad Air, iPad Mini 3 and below, and iPad 4th generation and older.

Tap and hold the refresh icon to the right of the website address.

Tap Request desktop site when it appears.

Wait a moment for the website to reload to the desktop version of the site, which will display a QR code to pair with your iPhone.

How to Chat With WhatsApp

Chatting to someone via WhatsApp on your iPad is nearly as simple as using the app. Here's how to get started once you have WhatsApp web open in Safari.

Tap the name of the person you want to message.

Tap the Type a message dialog box.

Type your message, then tap the arrow to send it to your friend.

Another option you have in WhatsApp is "view once" messages, which expire once the recipient has opened them. To use this feature, you must turn this feature on before you send each text or image, meaning you can't just turn it on and automatically make everything "view once."

View-once messages expire after 14 days if nobody reads or views them, and neither you nor the person you send them to can save, forward, or star (favorite) them.

What Limitations Are There to WhatsApp on Your iPad?

Because WhatsApp isn't really meant to work on your iPad, there are some key limitations to what you can do on it.

  • No notifications : You won't get any notifications when you receive a message from someone. You have to manually open the website every time you want to check for new messages.
  • Different contacts : The list of contacts from your iPhone or Android smartphone will be displayed in WhatsApp Web, rather than the contacts on your iPad.
  • Limited voice notes : You can't send voice notes through WhatsApp Web, although you can still play received ones.
  • Existing account : You require an existing WhatsApp account to use this method.

1. Go to web.whatsapp.com . The WhatsApp web interface will appear.

2. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone. Tap Settings at the bottom right of your screen to bring up the Settings menu. Tap WhatsApp Web/Desktop.

How to use WhatsApp on iPad

Lewis Painter

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, boasting one billion daily users and an incredible 65 billion messages sent every day, helping people keep in touch no matter what. The iPad, especially with a connected keyboard and trackpad, provides a great way to browse and send WhatsApp messages but, unfortunately, there’s no WhatsApp for iPad.

That’s the end of it, right? Wrong. While there might not be an official WhatsApp for iPad app, there is a way to use WhatsApp on your iPad: WhatsApp Web. We explain everything you need to know right here.

Using WhatsApp on an iPad

Although WhatsApp is rumoured to be working on multi-device support for the popular messaging service, the only way you can use WhatsApp on an iPad right now is via WhatsApp Web. That means you’ll have to connect your WhatsApp-enabled iPhone to your iPad via Safari – it might sound complicated, but it’s a straightforward process that’ll take no longer than 30 seconds, and it’ll work if you’ve got an Android too.

  • Open Safari on your iPad and head to web.whatsapp.com . If you’re running iOS 13, skip ahead to step 3.

ipad safari whatsapp

  • On your iPhone, open WhatsApp and head to Settings > WhatsApp Web and scan the QR code displayed on your iPad to pair the devices. If you’re on an Android, open WhatsApp, open the Chats screen, tap the three dots and select WhatsApp Web to scan the QR code.
  • WhatsApp Web on your iPad will then refresh, displaying all your recent WhatsApp chats with friends and family. Enjoy!

The only real downside to using WhatsApp Web on an iPad is the lack of notification support; while you’ll get notifications when using the service on a Mac or PC, Apple doesn’t currently allow websites to access push notifications via Safari on iPhone or iPad. You’ll hear the familiar chime with incoming messages when you’ve got the website open, but you won’t be notified once you close your browser.

Oh, and while WhatsApp didn’t initially support the sending of voice messages over WhatsApp Web on iPad, the company has since added full integration – a big win for iPad users!

How to use WhatsApp on an iPad

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, and yet it’s not possible to use the WhatsApp app on Apple’s iPad. Fortunately, there’s a clever way around this.

While it’s not possible to use the WhatsApp app on your iPad tablet, you are able to use the WhatsApp Web service on a web browser instead.

WhatsApp Web launched back in 2015, granting access to the messaging service to iPad users. There are sadly a few restrictions to this compared to using the official app, with the absence of message notifications particularly frustrating. But it does at least allow you to read, write and send messages from your iPad.

So if you like the idea of using WhatsApp on the big screen of your iPad, then follow the steps below to find out how you can start using it right away.

What you’ll need:

  • A smartphone with WhatsApp installed
  • An active internet connection

The Short Version

  • Open Safari on your iPad and head to web.whatsapp.com

Open WhatsApp on your smartphone

  • On Android, tap the three dots in the top-right and tap Linked Devices. On iPhone, tap Settings and then tap Linked Devices

Tap Link a Device

  • Use your smartphone to scan the QR code displayed on your iPad
  • Send and receive WhatsApp messages on your iPad!

Head to the WhatsApp Web page in Safari

Tap Linked Devices

Use your phone to scan the QR code on your iPad

Send and receive WhatsApp messages on your iPad

Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t allow web-based apps to deliver notifications via Safari, so no, you can’t get notifications on your iPad – you’ll have to keep your connected smartphone nearby to be alerted to incoming messages.

While there’s huge demand for a WhatsApp app for iPad with full functionality, there’s no official app available just yet – though leaks have teased that an iPad app could be in development. Plus, there’s a WhatsApp app available for macOS, so we can’t imagine it’d be too difficult to port that to iPadOS . We’ll just have to wait and see for now!

Yes! If you want quick access to WhatsApp Web, simply tap the share button in the top-right in Safari and tap Add to Home Screen.

The big omission for many will be the lack of notifications, but it’s not the only limitation of the WhatsApp Web interface on iPad. You’ll also struggle to make and receive both audio calls and video calls when using the app on a tablet.

How to use WhatsApp on iPad (2024)

ipad safari whatsapp

WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging services. It allows you to send messages, make or receive voice or video calls, complete payments, etc. Regardless of the size of WhatsApp’s user base, the application is not available for iPad users. However, you can still get WhatsApp on your iPad through WhatsApp Web.

Additionally, you can even create and add a WhatsApp Web shortcut to your iPad’s Home Screen for easy access. Read along to learn how to use WhatsApp on iPad.

What is WhatsApp Web?

Even though WhatsApp does not have a native application for the iPad, you can get WhatsApp on your iPad through WhatsApp Web. For those unaware, WhatsApp Web is a browser-based solution that allows you to access your WhatsApp account on any web browser.

Apart from your primary phone (iPhone or Android), you can link your WhatsApp account with up to four devices through WhatsApp Web. Initially, you will need your primary device to link your account with other devices. Once the process is completed, you can access your WhatsApp account through linked devices even when your primary device does not have an internet connection. You can send and receive messages, upload and download media , and a lot more.

How to get WhatsApp on iPad using Whatsapp Web

  • Open Safari on your iPad → head to web.whatsapp.com
  • Now, open WhatsApp on your iPhone.
  • Tap Settings at the bottom right corner.

Tap on Settings, Linked Devices, Link a Device in WhatsApp

  • Authenticate yourself using Face ID, Touch ID, or Password.
  • Now, your primary device will open the Scan QR Code page.

Scan QR Code displayed on your iPad screen

  • WhatsApp Web will download all your messages, and once the loading bar is completed, you’ve successfully set up WhatsApp Web on your iPad.

After you’ve linked your WhatsApp account with your iPad, you can access the service whenever you want just by heading to the WhatsApp Web page on Safari. Also, you can access your WhatsApp account, read and send messages, etc., through WhatsApp Web even when your primary device is not connected to the internet. Also, WhatsApp Web has a few limitations, which we will discuss in detail later.

Add WhatsApp Web to iPad Home Screen

To shorten the process of accessing your WhatsApp, we recommend adding a WhatsApp Web shortcut to your iPad’s Home Screen.

  • Open Safari on your iPad.
  • Head to WhatsApp Web .

Tap the Share icon on iPad

A shortcut with the WhatsApp icon will be added to your iPad’s Home Screen. You can access WhatsApp Web directly with this shortcut.

What are the limitations of using WhatsApp Web?

WhatsApp Web does not offer the same features available on the native WhatsApp app available for iOS and Android. Listed below are all the limitations of using WhatsApp Web.

  • WhatsApp Web will not notify you about any new messages.
  • When you access WhatsApp Web on your iPad, it will display your primary device’s contacts (iPhone or Android) and not the contacts present on your iPad. We have a guide to help you send WhatsApp messages to users not added to your contacts .
  • You cannot make or receive voice or video calls through WhatsApp Web.
  • While you can view Status Updates by others in your contact list, you cannot add a Status Update through WhatsApp Web.
  • Last but not least, the biggest limitation of WhatsApp Web is that you need to have an existing WhatsApp account to use the service. So, if you were planning to get a cellular iPad just to use WhatsApp, please drop those plans.

Despite these drawbacks, you need not worry about privacy, as all the messages imported from your WhatsApp account to WhatsApp Web are end-to-end encrypted.

Back in August 2021, there were several rumors about WhatsApp testing a beta version of WhatsApp for iPad. Considering we are already in 2024, it is possible that Meta will release a native WhatsApp app for the iPad.

Yes, you can use WhatsApp Web on your iPad even when your iPhone is not connected to the internet.

Enjoy WhatsApp on your iPad!

Meta – the parent company of WhatsApp – also owns Instagram and has not launched a native iPad app for the same. So, it looks like Meta is ignoring developing apps for iPadOS, which we hope will change in the near future. Nonetheless, we hope this article helps you set up and use WhatsApp on your iPad.

Even with all its limitations, having the option to use WhatsApp on iPad is excellent, especially when you do not need your primary device to be connected to the internet.

How to Get WhatsApp on Your iPad

Although there's no official iPad app for WhatsApp just yet, you can still access the messaging platform on your tablet with a workaround.

WhatsApp is the go-to app for most of us to communicate with friends, family, and colleagues. It's available on all major mobile platforms, and there's even a web version for those who wish to use it in a browser on a computer.

But what if you're an iPad user? Well, WhatsApp doesn't offer a native client for iPad yet. And although reports suggest the company's working on one, there's no official word on when it'll be available.

As a result, your best bet right now to access WhatsApp on the iPad is via WhatsApp Web. Let's see how.

Get WhatsApp on the iPad Using WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp Web is a web-based solution that allows you to access your WhatsApp account on any device using a web browser. With it, you can link up to four devices—besides your primary phone—and use them to send and receive messages from your WhatsApp account, even when the primary device doesn't have an internet connection.

Linking a device via WhatsApp Web involves a one-time setup. Here's how to do this and use WhatsApp Web on your iPad.

Step 1. Link the iPad to Your WhatsApp Account

First up, you need to link your iPad to your WhatsApp account. So, open Safari on your iPad and go to WhatsApp Web .

Any other browser would also do, but we recommend Safari since it offers the option to add a shortcut to a website on the Home Screen for quick access, which we'll need later.

Now, open WhatsApp on your primary phone. It can be either an Android device or an iPhone. On iPhone, go to the Settings tab, select Linked Devices , and tap on Link a Device .

On the other hand, if you're using an Android phone, tap on the ellipsis button in the top-right, select Linked Devices , and tap on Link a device .

Depending on the device you're using and the authentication method you have in place, authenticate yourself with a PIN or biometrics .

Finally, take your primary device and scan the QR code displayed on the WhatsApp Web page. Wait for WhatsApp to download your messages; you should've successfully linked your iPad to your WhatsApp account.

Step 2. Use WhatsApp Web on Your iPad

Once your iPad is linked to your WhatsApp account, you can start using it immediately. All you need to do is open Safari (or your browser of choice) and visit the WhatsApp Web page . Let it finish loading your conversations, and you should be able to see all your existing and new messages.

Step 3. Add a WhatsApp Web Shortcut on Your Home Screen

Opening Safari and visiting the WhatsApp Web website works fine but involves a few steps. An alternative way to this is to add a quick-access shortcut on one of your iPad's Home Screen pages and use it to access WhatsApp Web. Although this is optional, we insist you do this as it'll make accessing WhatsApp easy and save you time.

To add the shortcut, open WhatsApp Web in Safari on your iPad, tap the Share icon in the toolbar at the top, and select Add to Home Screen from the context menu.

In the Add to Home Screen pop-up, tap on Add , and you'll see an app-like icon for the shortcut on your Home Screen.

Move the shortcut to whichever Home Screen page you think is convenient, and simply tap on it whenever you want to use WhatsApp on your iPad. From there, you can see new messages you've received and reply to them, among other things.

The Limitations of WhatsApp Web on the iPad

As soon as you link your iPad to your WhatsApp account, WhatsApp will import all your messages—in an E2E encrypted manner—to your iPad.

Hereon, you can view all of your conversations, send messages, view new messages, see people's statuses, and start a new chat/group/community. However, there are a few things you can't do with WhatsApp Web on your iPad.

Accepting or making voice/video calls, adding a status, or permanently deleting a message or conversation are some of the actions you can't perform on WhatsApp Web on your iPad. Similarly, you can't search for a message beyond a couple of months back. In addition, WhatsApp currently doesn't support browser notifications. So you'll have to go back to the tab to check for new messages.

Leverage iPad's Bigger Screen Estate to Interact Better With Messages

WhatsApp Web has been around for a while. However, it only recently received the ability to use linked devices without needing the primary phone to be active, making it convenient to use on the iPad.

Sure, there are limitations—and there's only so much you can do in WhatsApp on your iPad—but for those who need to respond to several messages, this can be a great productivity hack. Simply pair a Bluetooth keyboard to your iPad, and you're ready!

Now that you have WhatsApp Web on your iPad, you may want to check out some of its tips and tricks to get more out of the platform.

How to use WhatsApp on iPad with iPadOS

WhatsApp for iPad

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world. The app is primarily available for iPhone and Android smartphones but not for tablets, including iPads. Luckily, with iPadOS, it is easier than ever to get WhatsApp up and running on an iPad. Here is how you can use WhatsApp on iPad, without buying any third-party app.

This method involves the use of Safari browser on iPad, which now supports desktop-class browsing after the release of iPadOS. Websites now load by default in desktop mode in iPadOS which is fully optimized for desktop compatible websites and web-apps. Safari on iPadOS uses the same user agent string as Safari on macOS , so websites are served accordingly.

WhatsApp for iPad 2

A few things to note:

  • You will not get any notifications since Safari on iPad does not support them.
  • The list of contacts from your iPhone or Android will be shown in WhatsApp Web, NOT the list of contacts on your iPad.
  • You can add an icon for WhatsApp to your iPad home screen by tapping the share button in Safari, and tapping on Add to Home Screen. Tapping the icon will just open the website in Safari, instead of opening it as a full-screen Progressive Web App.
  • You can share photos, videos and files from your iPad to your contacts on WhatsApp. You can also save incoming media to your iPad.
  • You can also record and send voice notes. A red microphone icon will show in Safari’s address bar, when the mic is active.

While the experience is perfect due to lack of notifications, the web app works great in Safari. There are rumors that a dedicated iPad app is in the works, and will be released soon. Whether it will work via connectivity with an iPhone or Android device, or stand-alone, is yet to be seen. Telegram, a messaging service similar to WhatsApp, already has an iPad app which works independently of its smartphone apps. There is no reason that WhatsApp cannot do the same, without compromising on security.

How to use WhatsApp Web on your iPad?

How to use WhatsApp Web on your iPad?

Thanks to WhatsApp Web, we are able to use the communication platform on several devices other than our smartphones. It is usually preferred for PCs and Macs, but did you know you can also use the feature on your iPad? In this guide, we will show you how to use WhatsApp Web on your iPad!

WhatsApp Web is a web-based extension of the WhatsApp mobile application that allows users to access their WhatsApp accounts on their desktop or laptop computers. It mirrors the conversations and messages from the mobile app onto the computer screen, making it easy for users to communicate with their contacts while working on their computers. Luckily, there is also a way to use it on your iPad!

How to use WhatsApp Web on your iPad?

How to use WhatsApp Web on your iPad: Explained

If you know how to use the feature on your PC or Mac, then you are pretty much familiar with the process. WhatsApp creates QR codes for people who want to mirror their conversations on other devices, and it is the same for iPads too. Here is how to see WhatsApp Web on your iPad:

  • Open Safari on your iPad.
  • Type web.whatsapp.com in the URL bar and go to the website. Leave the page open .
  • If you see the older home page, refresh until you see the "Load desktop site" option.
  • On your smartphone, open WhatsApp.
  • Go to Settings at the bottom right of your screen.
  • Tap Linked Devices.
  • Tap Link a Device .
  • Scan the QR code that is on your iPad's screen.
  • You will see all your conversations on your iPad screen.

How to use WhatsApp Web on your iPad?

Now, let's create a shortcut so that you can access it easily in the future. Remember that sometimes your devices might lose connection, so you might have to scan the QR code again. To create a WhatsApp shortcut on your iPad, please follow the steps below:

  • Go to WhatsApp Web on your iPad .
  • Near the URL bar, tap the Share icon, which looks like a square with an arrow showing upward.
  • Tap Add to Home Screen .

These steps will help you create a WhatsApp icon on your iPad's home screen. When you tap on it, it will take you to the WhatsApp Web page.

How do I know if I am using the built-in QR scanner in WhatsApp?

WhatsApp has its own security measures, and the QR code is only one of them. On your smartphone, go to WhatsApp and tap Settings. Select "Linked Devices," and then you must use the "Link a Device" option on the list. That way, you will know that you are using the built-in QR scanner in WhatsApp.

Scanning the right QR code might also be important in terms of security. If you are using the official website, then there is nothing to worry about. Make sure that the website you see the QR code is web.whatsapp.com. As long as you use the official website, you will be using the built-in QR code.

Can I access my WhatsApp Web chats without scanning the QR code?

You technically can by using a third-party application, but it might not be the safest. This process needs to have some security measures, and a QR code is one of them. If you want to mirror your conversations to your iPad, we recommend you use a QR code to complete the process safely.

There is still no official WhatsApp application available in the App Store that will work on iPads. However, you can still use the network through the web interface. If you’re not familiar with this online platform, don’t worry. We’ve created for you an easy step-by-step guide that will help you get it all set up in a few minutes.

How to Use WhatsApp on an iPad

Use WhatsApp on an iPad

WhatsApp users who already use the app on their computer will find the guide below very familiar, as the platform used for iPad is the same. As mentioned, there is still no app available for iPad, meaning that the only way to use it is through an internet browser.

The guide below will help you sync your WhatsApp account on your iPad with the latest iPadOS. With versions prior to iPadOS 12, you’ll have to take some extra steps. Here’s what you need to do:

ipad safari whatsapp

And just like that, you’ll be able to start using WhatsApp on your iPad. You can create a shortcut to the app on your home screen to access WhatsApp quickly in the future. Here’s how to do it:

ipad safari whatsapp

Now you’ll have a WhatsApp icon on your home screen that will immediately take you to the web version of the app.

If you use WhatsApp Business, the process will be the same. For those who haven’t heard of WhatsApp Business, it’s the version of the app that has become a hit between small businesses and start-ups. It allows you to create a whole profile with your business information, create a catalog, and automatic responses, among other features.

The first time you sync your WhatsApp account, it may take a while for all the messages to load, it will depend on your Internet connection and the number of messages you have on the app. The best part is, your account will remain connected until you decide to log out.

While we wholeheartedly encourage using official sources of apps and programs, there might be some users who aren’t fans of the WhatsApp Web version and prefer to have an app installed. For those users, there are third-party applications available in the App Store that are worth trying. Some of the most popular are Messenger for WhatsApp, Whats Web App, and Messaging for WhatsApp on iPad.

In comparison, the WhatsApp web interface does not require the installation of external apps, which may feel that compromise the safety of our devices or the information we share. Remember WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption technology which guarantees the privacy of the messages and files we share with any other WhatsApp user.

Most of these apps are available for free but keep in mind that they may not use the same technology to guarantee the safety of your messages. Review them carefully before downloading any third-party software.

Can I Use WhatsApp on an iPad Without a Phone?

As explained in the guide above, using WhatsApp on an iPad is only possible by scanning the QR code displayed on the WhatsApp Web main page. For that reason, it’s not possible to access your WhatsApp account on your iPad unless you have an active account on your phone. This may change once an official app is launched, but we will have to wait to see what WhatsApp has in store for future updates.

With the online version of the app, once the synchronization has been finalized, you won’t need to rely on your phone to use it. However, it’ll have to stay connected to Wi-Fi. Otherwise, you’ll lose the connection on your iPad and won’t sync your messages properly.

Is WhatsApp Web Similar to the App?

Using WhatsApp on your iPad will allow you to send and receive messages, exchange media files, and even send voice notes. However, there are some limitations, similar to when you use WhatsApp from your computer. The most important is that you won’t be able to make calls.

Another important limitation is the network speed. You may notice a little tardiness in the reception of messages and the general navigation through the network. Considering this is not an application, it’s completely normal. If you like fast response navigation, you’ll have to keep using your phone for the time being.

With a steady Wi-Fi connection, WhatsApp Web can be set to reliably forward notifications and calls. This allows you to work from a larger screen and without switching devices during projects.

WhatsApp on the iPad

If you’ve been wondering about using WhatsApp on your iPad, we hope this guide was useful for you. Remember there might be some limitations regarding what you can and can’t do, but the main WhatsApp features will be available and work perfectly. With the more recent introduction of a PC app, WhatsApp might release an iPad-compatible app soon.

Leave us a comment below telling us all about your experience using WhatsApp on your iPad.

How to Install and Use WhatsApp on iPad Without iPhone

iPad in hand, iPhone at rest - connect and chat with your friends with no boundaries any further!

WhatsApp indeed reigns as a global messaging app, connecting friends and family all over, right on the go. And the best part? It is supported on multiple platforms, via its standalone app or WhatsApp web. But here’s the catch: no dedicated app is yet released for iPadOS. So, the question arises: Can you install and use WhatsApp on your iPad without an iPhone and if so, how? Let’s find that out!

how to install WhatsApp on an iPad without an iPhone

How to Install WhatsApp on iPad without iPhone

As there isn’t an app version of WhatsApp for iPad right now, you cannot technically install it. You would need to log in to your account via WhatsApp web on Safari browser, simply with a QR code scan. Now when it comes to using WhatsApp on an iPad, in the absence of an iPhone in hand, there’s often been an unfortunate barrier.

With the multi-device feature on WhatsApp, you can link your iPad to your iPhone or Android smartphone and use it from both devices in real time. Now, as it is a one-time setup, you do not have to keep the primary device nearby or online always to use WhatsApp on the iPad. Follow the steps below to set up:

1. Launch the WhatsApp Web website in the Safari browser on the iPad.

You’ll find a set of instructions on the screen explaining how to log in to your account and on the right will be a QR code.

2. Open WhatsApp on your Android device/iPhone, move to Settings  and click on Linked Devices .

3. Tap on Link a Device .

tap-on-link-a-device

4. Scan the OR code displayed on the iPad.

Once scanned, both devices will be linked and you can start using WhatsApp on your iPad. However, to continue using it without having to keep the primary device online, you’ll have to add it as a shortcut.

5. In the WhatsApp Web in Safari tab, tap on the share icon next to the address bar.

6. Tap on Add to Home Screen , followed by Add .

That’s it! WhatsApp Web shortcut will not be added to the home screen and you can just tap on it to access WhatsApp easily.

How to Use WhatsApp on iPad Without QR Code

Is the WhatsApp web QR code not working while scanning? You can link WhatsApp and use it on your iPad even without a QR code. Follow the steps below:

1. Open  WhatsApp Web in the Safari browser on the iPad.

2. You’ll see the Link with phone number instead option. Click on it.

You'll see the Link with phone number instead option. Click on it.

3. Select the Country code, enter the primary account phone number, and click on Next.

You’ll receive an 8-character code on the screen.

4. Now on the iPhone or Android device, tap on Enter code notification and unlock it.

5. Tap Confirm to confirm the location and device being paired.

6. Unlock the phone again and enter the 8-digit code that appeared on the iPad.

Without the QR code being scanned, both devices will be linked.

How to get WhatsApp on your iPad

There may be no official WhatsApp iPad app, but there is an official way you can get WhatsApp on your iPad

WhatsApp is one of the most popular apps. More than two billion folks use the platform across the world, but there’s no iPad app.

This may seem odd given the iPad is the most popular tablet series. However, there’s a good reason. It’s down to security, and the kind of encryption WhatsApp uses when sending messages between people.

A woman's hands holding an iPad Air with WhatsApp on the screen.

Key details

Send and receive WhatsApp messages from your iPad. You will need a smartphone with WhatsApp already setup though – this won’t work without it.

Just a few taps on your iPad and your smartphone are required to get WhatsApp working on your tablet.

Can you get WhatsApp on iPad?

WhatsApp says it would like to make an iPad app, but for now we’ll have to show you a workaround which is one of our favourite WhatsApp tips and tricks .

It’s the same method we use to get WhatsApp working on our laptops, and a great way to avoid phone distraction while getting stuff done, without being accused of ignoring messages.

The method is WhatsApp Web, and you actually shouldn’t start off by searching “WhatsApp” on the iPad App Store.

While you will find some apps there if you do so, none are made by WhatsApp and under the surface they use the same official method we’re going to show you today.

It’s free, it’s stable, and supports almost all generations of iPad. Here’s what you need.

What you’ll need

  • Your smartphone
  • Internet connection

For this method we will use the tablet’s built-in Safari browser. WhatsApp needs version 11 or newer, which is available to iPads released in 2013 or newer. These include the iPad mini 2, the first iPad Air and iPad 5th Generation.

If your tablet is not ancient, it should work as long as its software has been updated in the last 4-5 years.

  • iPad Pro vs iPad Air vs iPad vs iPad mini: what’s the difference?

You will of course need an internet connection, which is why WhatApp Web on a tablet is best used at home or in the office — anywhere with Wi-Fi. While there are iPads with mobile data, most people have Wi-Fi only tablets.

We’ll also need a phone with an active WhatsApp account. The iPad method piggy-backs off this phone account, in part because WhatsApp uses a phone number to setup your messaging profile.

If you’re new to Apple’s tablet, we can show you how to set up your iPad , before you carry on here.

All sorted? Let’s start.

Open Safari on your iPad

Setup screen for WhatsApp Web on an iPad

Open the Safari app and type in web.whatsapp.com in the search bar. Simply searching for “ WhatApp Web ” online works too. The result we want pops up as the first result, in our experience.

This should load a webpage with a large QR barcode on your iPad ’ s screen.

Grab your phone

For the next step we need the phone you use for WhatsApp normally, rather than your iPad. Load up WhatsApp on it.

  • Select Linked Devices

WhatsApp's linked devices screen on a smartphone

Open the WhatsApp settings menu on your phone.

  • iPhone users : tap the ‘Settings’ option in the bottom right corner
  • Android users : tap the column of three dots in the top right corner

Then tap Linked Devices and on the next screen y ou should just see the ‘Link a device’ button. Tap that button.

Scan the QR code

A camera view will appear on your phone. Turn on your iPad screen if it has gone to sleep and hold the phone so its camera can “ see ” the QR graphic within the WhatsApp web screen on your iPad.

Use WhatsApp on iPad

A hand holding a tablet showing WhatsApp on your iPad

Once the QR is recognised , the classic view of your WhatsApp conversations should appear on your iPad.

Now that y ou’ve got WhatsApp on your iPad, you can chat away on your tablet just as you would on your phone.

A different feeling

WhatsApp on iPad will feel a little different than it does on your phone, and this method does not support notifications when a new message comes in.

D esperate for that new message ding? You can replicate these very same steps on a laptop, which will support notification sounds.

Easy access

Make whatsapp web easy to access.

WhatsApp icon on the home screen of an iPad

So far we have got you a webpage showing your WhatsApp chats. If you close down Safari, you can simply navigate back to web.whatsapp.com in future. However, there is a better way to access WhatsApp on your iPad .

Create a shortcut icon

  • Open up the WhatsApp Web view in Safari on your iPad
  • Tap the button that looks like a box with an upward-pointing arrow just right of the Search bar in Safari, at the top of the screen
  • In the menu that pops-up, tap ‘Add Bookmark’
  • Next, choose a label to appear next to the shortcut, which you’re about to place on the iPad home screen. This places a WhatApp icon on the home screen that looks just like a dedicated WhatsApp app

Move the icon

  • If you want to move this icon, long press it until a menu pops up then tap ‘Edit Home Screen’.
  • You can now drag the icon wherever you like, including the shortcut dock at the bottom of the display

What is a ‘long press’?

Instead of tapping an icon on screen, a long press requires you to hold your finger down for a second, allowing a new function to appear – usually in the form of a smaller window providing you with additional options.

Bookmark instead

  • Don’t want a WhatsApp icon on your home screen? You can bookmark it instead. Go back to the WhatsApp Web view in Safari
  • After pressing the upward arrow button by the search bar, tap ‘Add to Favourites’
  • This adds a link to WhatsApp Web in the ‘Bookmarks’ section of Safari, which is accessible from the menu icon in the top-left of the screen.

Remove iPad

How to remove a linked account.

WhatsApp lets you link your account to four devices other than your phone. If you run out of these linked devices, or simply want to unlink your iPad, here’s how to do so:

On your phone

  • Open up WhatsApp on your phone
  • On an Android, tap the three dot Settings menu icon at the top right. On an iPhone, tap the Settings gear-shaped button at the bottom-right of the main screen
  • You should see a Device Status section that shows all the gadgets currently linked to your WhatsApp account. Your iPad’s entry should show up as “Safari (Mac OS)” or similar
  • Tap that entry, and select Log Out in the pop-up to unlink your iPad

On your iPad

  • Tap the button in the left pane of WhatsApp Web that looks like a column of three dots
  • Select Log out. This will take you back to the screen we saw right at the beginning of this tutorial, with a large QR code for pairing

WhatsApp: How to use the messenger on the iPad

Photo of Simon Lüthje

WhatsApp is undoubtedly the most popular messenger service on the market. But there is one thing that really annoys many users. You are basically dependent on a smartphone to use it. However, the emphasis is on “actually”. After all, it is now also possible to use the service in other ways. For example, on a tablet. We will explain below how you can use WhatsApp on your tablet.

WhatsApp on iPad: Here’s how!

It’s not rocket science to use the popular messenger on your Apple tablet. Before you get started, however, you need to make sure that you meet certain requirements. Firstly, you need a smartphone that has an active WhatsApp account. The prerequisite for this is that the tablet is registered as a linked device.

whatsapp

You can now use Messenger on your iPad with the following steps:

  • Open the browser on your iPad. In Safari, visit the website https://web.whatsapp.com/.
  • It is important that you tap on the “Share icon” (square with arrow pointing upwards). Now click on “Request desktop site”. If you don’t do this, the browser will redirect you to the normal WhatsApp website.
  • Now pick up your smartphone. Open WhatsApp and click on the settings (gear icon in the bottom right-hand corner).
  • Select the item “Linked devices”.
  • There is a QR code on the iPad. You now need to scan this using your smartphone camera.
  • Your iPad has now been registered as a linked device. You can now also use Messenger on your tablet.

WhatsApp on iPad: own app on the way

Let’s not kid ourselves: Even if the Safari route makes WhatsApp possible on the iPad, the whole thing is not really user-friendly. To make it at least a little more convenient, we recommend that you create a bookmark in Safari. This will take you to the chat page in the browser as quickly as possible. The developers behind WhatsApp are also aware that the detour via the linked device setup is anything but self-explanatory. For this reason, they have been working on the implementation of a stand-alone app for the iPad for some time.

whatsapp

In view of the gigantic market success of the tablet, this is definitely understandable. The evidence is currently growing stronger, as WhatsApp already has a beta version of the application in the pipeline. It was possible to take part in the corresponding test until some time ago. However, the field of participants is now full, as a look at the TestFlight website suggests. Nevertheless, this is a great glimmer of hope for all those who have been waiting a long time for a stand-alone version. Until the iPad app awaits us in the corresponding app store, however, you will have to make do with the browser solution for better or worse.

Advantage for Android users

But what about the competition? Can WhatsApp also be used on a tablet with AndroidOS? The answer is: Yes, and how! In contrast to the iPad, you get a standalone app here. The messenger can also be downloaded from the Google Play Store for your tablet with Android as the operating system. However, this is not possible for all devices and is subject to certain conditions. Your tablet must have a SIM card slot and also use an active SIM card. Alternatively, a mobile connection via eSIM is of course also sufficient. However, this does not only have advantages. You need to be aware that you do not use the same account on your tablet as on your smartphone. This is simply because each SIM card has its own phone number. By the way, there is a little trick that allows you to use Messenger on tablets without a SIM card. All you need is a valid phone number.

ipad safari whatsapp

This does not necessarily have to be a cell phone number. So you can save yourself the trouble of finding an additional mobile phone number just because of the messenger. Contrary to popular opinion, registering with WhatsApp also works with a conventional landline. This method also starts with the installation of WhatsApp. So go to the Google Play Store and download the messenger service. Once you have installed it, open it. As part of the setup process, you will need to enter a phone number. Simply enter your landline number. Of course, you cannot receive text messages during the subsequent verification process. Instead, select the “Call me” option. Your phone will then ring and the activation code will be dictated to you by a computer voice. Simply enter the number combination on the tablet. Once this is done, you have verified the new account and can use WhatsApp on your Android tablet without any problems.

WhatsApp is finally (finally!) available on the iPad

Published on September 20, 2023

apple logo ipad air 5th gen 2022

  • WhatsApp has launched a beta version of an iPad app this week.
  • The app allows you to use WhatsApp on your iPad without relying on the web version.

WhatsApp has lacked a native iPad app for years now, forcing people to use the web version if they really needed it on their slates. Now, it looks like a proper version of the messaging app is finally available on Apple’s tablets.

WhatsApp watcher WABetaInfo spotted the availability of the WhatsApp beta for iPad this week. More specifically, the compatible beta version is 23.19.1.71.

To get in on the action, you’ll need to sign up for the WhatsApp beta program and download the apps to your iPhone and iPad. From here, you need to set up WhatsApp on your iPad by visiting the Linked Devices feature on your phone.

Do you use WhatsApp on a tablet?

The outlet notes that WhatsApp for the iPad indeed allows you to use the app independently of your phone. The iPad app also syncs sent and received messages with your other devices. Unfortunately, it seems like some features like live location functionality and status updates aren’t working as expected right now. But it’s no surprise to see a few niggles with a beta release.

Not part of the beta program? Then you’ll have to wait an undetermined amount of time for the app to receive a stable release. This is a welcome launch nonetheless, as it gives Apple users a popular cross-device alternative to the likes of iMessage.

WhatsApp Adds Message Filters to Make Itself More Usable

WhatsApp may be one of the world's most popular chat apps, but it's notoriously hard to use. Meta wants to fix that.

ipad safari whatsapp

WhatsApp is hoping to make it easier to find some messages.

WhatsApp owner Meta is updating its popular chat app with inbox filters, borrowing a useful feature from email inboxes to help keep track of the many conversations users have throughout the day.

The update, announced Tuesday, will introduce three filter buttons to the top of the app's standard list of conversations. "All," which is the default, will show all messages, with the other two options being "Unread" and "Groups."

"We believe filters will make it easier for people to stay organized and find their most important conversations and help navigate through messages more efficiently," the company said in a statement. The free update should be available to all users "in the coming weeks," the company added.

2 billion users

The move marks another way Meta is tweaking its wildly popular WhatsApp messaging service to be more useful. The app, which counts more than 2 billion users worldwide , started as an SMS alternative for many people. Facebook purchased WhatsApp in 2014 for $19 billion .

The social-networking giant has slowly added features to WhatsApp over the years, including  secure messaging , video chat and the ability for businesses to communicate with customers , among others.

Read more: Signal, WhatsApp and Telegram: Here's which secure messaging app you should use

WhatsApp has faced struggles despite its popularity. Meta sued surveillance firm NSO Group in 2019 over alleged WhatsApp hacks. Less than a year later, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' phone was hacked through a WhatsApp message.

WhatsApp has been criticized over the years for being hard to use, particularly when  adding contacts  or  switching phones . The company has recently been overhauling its app, making it  appear more modern  and  more flexible  for people who have multiple devices.

Despite WhatsApp's wide usage, and its stated privacy efforts, CNET's reviewers have cautioned against using it in place of other secure messaging apps. WhatsApp is more convenient, more widely used and prettier than competitors such as Signal and Telegram, but the company doesn't share enough of its code widely with the public, CNET reviewers said , allowing experts to audit the company's claims.

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, how to hide the sidebar in microsoft edge.

How to hide the sidebar in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is a surprisingly good web browser with some unique capabilities, like direct and easy GPT 4 access , and it has been a fun browser to experiment with as my new default . But, like many Microsoft software products, the appearance can be a little cluttered if you’re accustomed to the more minimalist designs of browsers like Safari. For an obvious example which we’ll discuss here, when you launch Microsoft Edge, you’ll see there’s a prominent sidebar on the right side with a bunch of icons for things that you may not have any interest in using.

Let’s hide that sidebar in Microsoft Edge, giving you a cleaner and more streamlined user interface.

How to Hide the Microsoft Edge Sidebar to Reduce GUI Clutter

This is covered on a Mac, but presumably hiding the sidebar is the same on other platforms with Edge too:

  • Open Microsoft Edge if you haven’t done so already
  • Look at the sidebar on the right side of Edge, and click on the gear icon in the bottom right corner
  • Choose “Always Show Sidebar” so that it’s no longer checked

How to hide the sidebar in Microsoft Edge

  • The sidebar will immediately be hidden from view

Sidebar hidden in Microsoft Edge

You’ll now have a cleaner and more streamlined user interface in Microsoft Edge, and you’ll see that it now looks a bit more like Chrome. That makes sense, because Edge uses the Chromium Engine.

If part of the appeal of using Edge for you is that you use Copilot and GPT 4 often, don’t worry, hiding the sidebar does not hide the Copilot/GPT button, it’ll still be right there and available at any time.

For users of the Microsoft Edge browser who want a cleaner interface, you’re likely to appreciate decluttering and hiding that sidebar with its various icons for things like shopping, search, games, etc. If you frequently use the sidebar and its various buttons then you obviously won’t want to hide the sidebar.

Like any other settings change, this is not permanent, and you can always show the sidebar again by returning to the settings for Edge.

Have you ever used Microsoft Edge browser on your Mac, PC, iPhone, iPad, Android, or elsewhere? What do you think of the browser? We have a variety of other tips for Microsoft Edge here if you’re intrigued.

How to use widget stacks

You can use widget stacks to save space on your Home Screen and in Today View. You can use Smart Stacks or create your own widget stacks.

Add a Smart Stack

A Smart Stack is a pre-built collection of widgets that displays the right widget based on factors like your location, an activity, or time. A Smart Stack automatically rotates widgets to show the most relevant information throughout the day.

To add a Smart Stack:

Touch and hold an area on your Home Screen or in Today View until the apps jiggle.

Scroll down and tap Smart Stack.

Tap Add Widget.

Create your own widget stacks

Touch and hold an app or empty area on the Home Screen or Today View until the apps jiggle.

Drag a widget on top of another widget. You can stack up to 10 widgets.

Edit a widget stack

Touch and hold the widget stack.

* When Smart Rotate is on, iOS shows you relevant widgets throughout the day.

With iOS 15 and later, you can turn on Widget Suggestions, so apps you already use can automatically appear in your Smart Stack at the right time based on your past activity. An option lets you add the widget to your stack so it’s always there when you need it. Just follow steps 1-2, then tap Widget Suggestions to turn it on.

You need iOS 14 or later to use Smart Stacks or create your own widget stacks.

How to remove widgets

Touch and hold the widget that you want to remove.

Tap Remove Widget.

Tap Remove again to confirm.
