Malawi Safari Tours & Holidays

Malawi is a great choice for a well-rounded safari holiday. Dubbed ‘the warm heart of Africa’, it’s an amazing country to visit for people wanting to experience African life, culture, scenery and wildlife. Malawi isn’t a prime wildlife destination where people fly in and out of parks and hardly interact with the local people or get a feel for general life – it’s quite the opposite. So, if your interest in Africa goes beyond the quintessential African safari, Malawi might well be the country for you.

8 Questions About Malawi Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

lake malawi national park tour

When is the best time to visit Malawi?

“A Malawi safari is possible at any time of the year. July to October, which corresponds with the middle and end of the Dry season, is the best time for wildlife viewing. At this time, the bush thins out and animals gather around remaining water sources. However, this isn’t the case in Nyika National Park, which is located at high altitude and tends to be very cold during these months. The warmer summer months from November to May tend to be more pleasant and productive for wildlife viewing on the Nyika Plateau. Malawi is a varied country with a lot to offer aside from safari activities, so most people will visit some of the parks as part of a more general tour. The cooler, drier months from May to August usually offer the best travel conditions throughout much of the country. October can be extremely hot.”

What are the major attractions?

“Lake Malawi is the third-largest lake in Africa and covers about 25% of the country’s area. It forms part of a string of Rift Valley lakes and is by far the biggest attraction of the country. There are several resort areas along the lake offering sandy beaches as well as excellent diving and snorkeling. This friendly, laid-back country offers a great introduction to Africa, and tourism establishments are refreshingly integrated with local communities. Malawi is not a prime wildlife destination, but there are several good Malawi safari packages including options such as Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve. Nyika National Park is a scenic park at high altitude offering a very different experience from the bush safari destinations. There are also several forest reserves, and hikers are catered for on Mt Mulanje and Zomba Plateau.”

How much does a Malawi safari cost?

“Malawi vacations tend to be relatively affordable. In fact, the country had long been a popular backpacker destination before other tourism facilities developed, and today budget travelers remain well catered for. In recent years, more establishments have opened up for midrange and upmarket package tourism. As anywhere in Africa, safaris tend to be some of the more expensive activities on a holiday. Liwonde National Park is Malawi’s most established safari destination and it offers accommodation for three different markets: camping, a standard midrange camp and a luxury exclusive lodge. So no matter your budget, Malawi safari prices should be well within your reach.”

What is the wildlife viewing like in Malawi?

“Malawi is a very scenic country, but it’s not primarily a wildlife destination. Having said that, the parks have improved hugely in recent times and its reputation as a wildlife destination is growing steadily. Majete Wildlife Reserve is a Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) destination and part of it has been set aside as a private concession for the famous Robin Pope Safaris. With the help of African Parks, Majete has been regenerated and restocked from almost nothing, and it is rapidly becoming a top wildlife destination. Another gem to include in Malawi safari trips is Liwonde National Park. This very scenic park is on a beautiful stretch of the Shire River and boat-based safaris here are particularly rewarding. Hippos and crocodiles are abundant, and elephants can often be found drinking as well. Nyika National Park, which is more reminiscent of the European countryside than the African bush, offers a more low-key experience. Many antelope species can be seen grazing on the grassy hills, and leopards are often spotted on night drives.”

How safe is Malawi for tourists?

“Malawi is a safe country to visit. It is politically very stable and it lacks big cities on the scale of Nairobi, Dar es Salaam and Johannesburg, which are usually the crime hot spots of any country. The rural nature of Malawi makes it almost a hassle-free destination. Of course, there is some petty crime in the cities (as is the case all over the world), so normal safety precautions should be taken when walking around unguided.”

How do you select a reliable tour operator for a Malawi trip?

“Malawi is not a mainstream destination and it isn’t on many general tour operators’ portfolios. A good place to start looking is on SafariBookings.com. There are several Malawi tours on offer, as well as links to operators that do bespoke Malawi packages. Always check the online reviews for customer satisfaction and avoid any operators with limited or too much negative feedback.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“Although Malawi initially mainly catered to backpackers, there is now a full range of accommodation available when on a safari tour. Different levels and styles of accommodation can be found in most parks, including the old-style luxury tented camp. On a different level of class is the exquisite lodge run by Robin Pope in Majete Wildlife Reserve. A full range of accommodation options is available along the shores of Lake Malawi, ranging from small resorts and boutique hotels to backpacker hostels, campgrounds and guesthouses.”

What can I expect from a safari in Malawi?

“Malawi is a friendly, off-the-beaten-track destination that will appeal to those with a general interest in Africa: its people, wildlife and scenic beauty. Malawi holidays are usually, but not exclusively, centered on the wildlife. Depending on your interests, you can focus your itinerary more toward the parks and reserves, or the lake and general African life. Most people will spend some time on the lake as well as in the parks. The diving and snorkeling is fantastic, and the calm freshwater lake makes the whole experience easier than sea-based activities.”

The Adventures of Nicole

A Quick Travel Guide To Visiting Lake Malawi

Updated June 2023, A Quick Travel Guide To Visiting Lake Malawi was originally published in January 2021

Lake Malawi was the most relaxing part of my two month trip across Southern Africa a few years back (not including my grand finale at an all-inclusive resort in Zanzibar). I will admit, a lot of it was spent lazing in on the beaches around and swimming in Lake Malawi.

Despite being quite lazy on the Malawi leg of my trip, I still managed to squeeze in time to visit a couple of lakeside villages and shopped for lovely handmade wood carvings.

Malawi is hands down one of the best countries in Africa for backpackers with a surprisingly wide network of hostels and lakeside campsites. Though don’t come to Malawi with a plan to fast track the entire country- things move slowly in Malawi, you could even argue more slowly than any of its neighboring countries. Some may complain about the snail’s-pace of moving about in Malawi, but honestly (for me anyway) it’s one of Malawi’s great blessings.

Going to or coming from Zambia? Don’t miss South Luangwa National Park or the Devil’s Pool

Destinations Around Lake Malawi

Northern malawi.

Kande Beach, Lake Malawi, Malawi

Kande

Kande Bay is a bit further south than Nkhata Bay and is a bit quieter in comparison, making it the perfect place to relax and dig your toes into the golden sands on the shores of Lake Malawi.

I ended up spending 4 days in Kande when I visited Lake Malawi, just hanging out and enjoying the calm after almost 6 weeks of nonstop travel.

Where To Stay In Kande

  • Kande Beach Lodge & Camp

Nkhata is a port and fishing town on the northern shores of Lake Malawi, just 50 kilometers east of Mzuzu, and a backpacker center of Malawi.

If you’re planning to base yourself in one place on your visit to Lake Malawi and day trip out, Nkhata Bay isn’t a bad option.

Where To Stay In Nkhata Bay

  • Butterfly Space Lodge

Sat against a backdrop formed by the Livingstonia and Nyika mountains, and flanked by golden sand beaches lined with banana palms and papaya trees, Chitimba ended up being my favorite place I visited in Malawi.

Chitimba is located at the far north of Lake Malawi, making it a good starting/ending point for those coming from or leaving to southern Tanzania or northern Zambia.

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore Manchewe Falls, and nearby Nyika National Park and Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve while you’re staying in Chitimba. The village that sits just beyond the beach is worth spending some time in for the opportunity to learn a bit more about the area and purchase intricate wood carvings.

Where To Stay In Chitimba

  • Chitimba Camp

Chitimba, Lake Malawi, Malawi

Continuing on to Tanzania afterward? Check out why you should visit Mikumi National Park

Central Malawi

Nkhotakota is a port town on the shores of Central Malawi. Nkhotakota is a great place to base yourself for exploring other parts of Central Malawi. Don’t miss viewing elephants and other wildlife at Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, lazing on Mwaya Beach, Mawira hot springs, and visiting nearby Chia Lagoon.

Where To Stay In Nkhotakota

  • Sitima Inn
  • Yanu Yanu Lodge
  • Pick n Pay Resort

Likoma & Chisumulu Islands

Likoma and Chisumulu are the only two inhabited islands in Lake Malawi, both of which are enclaves that sit within Mozambique’s waters.

Likoma is the more often visited of the two, with access by both air and ferry. The Ilala ferry arrives from Chilumba and continues onto Monkey Bay and then makes the same trip in reverse a couple of times per week.

Likoma Island is home to some of Malawi’s most luxurious lodges.

Where To Stay On Likoma Island

  • Mango Drift Lodge

Southern Malawi

Cape maclear.

Reachable by bus from other parts of Malawi or by taking the Ilala ferry from Chilumba or Likoma Island to Monkey Bay and grabbing a taxi, Cape Maclear sits on the southern shores of Lake Malawi. Life moves quite slow in Malawi’s south, making Cape Maclear a great place to kick back and relax, and a perfect base for exploring the remainder of southern Malawi.

If you want to get off the beaten path in southern Malawi, you can head to Domwe Island located 5 kilometers off the coast from Cape Maclear (I 100% regret not heading out here!). There are fully equipped tents for rent on Domwe, or you can bring your gear and do it yourself.

Where To Stay In Cape Maclear

  • Fat Monkeys Lodge
  • Mgoza Lodge
  • Annie’s Lodge Cape Maclear
  • Beachside Cottage

Grab a copy of Bradt’s Malawi guidebook to help you start planning

Monkey Bay is located just south of Cape Maclear, making it easy to stay in one place and visit the other. The Ilala Ferry that starts from Chilumba arrives at Monkey Bay connecting with other parts of Malawi.

Similar to nearby Cape Maclear, Monkey Bay has a slow and laid back atmosphere. Plan to enjoy the beach or take a kayak trip to explore the coast and small offshore islands.

Where To Stay In Monkey Bay

  • Mufasa Eco Lodge
  • Monkey Bay Beach Lodge
  • Norman Carr Cottage

Liwonde National Park

Liwonde National Park is Malawi’s most popular park, conveniently located north of the city of Blantyre. You can arrange a riverboat safari, 4WD safaris, walking safaris, and even canoe safaris to explore this long and narrow national park that sits on the Shire River.

Getting Around Lake Malawi

  • By bus:  Buses connect many of the larger towns cities around Lake Malawi. The main bus company is AXA Coach Services.
  • By ferry:  The Ilala Ferry runs between Chilumba and Monkey Bay, making the trip each direction once per week. Know that taking the ferry is quite slow. See an  updated Ilala Ferry schedule here .
  • By car:  You can hire your own, or hire a driver and car for the duration of your trip. Of course, the price will vary greatly depending on time length, and distances for hiring a car and driver. Shop rental cars on  Expedia  and  Skyscanner .

What is the history of Lake Malawi?

Lake Malawi, also known as Lake Nyasa in Tanzania and Lago Niassa in Mozambique, is one of the African Great Lakes and the third-largest lake on the continent. It has a rich geological and human history.

Geological History: The lake is believed to have formed between one and two million years ago as a result of tectonic activity in the East African Rift system. This geological process caused the Earth's crust to thin and eventually led to the formation of the rift valley. As the crust stretched and thinned, blocks of land sank between the parallel faults, creating the depression that would eventually fill with water to form Lake Malawi.

Human History: The region around Lake Malawi has a long history of human habitation. Archaeological evidence suggests that humans have lived in the area for thousands of years. The lake's shores were inhabited by various Bantu-speaking peoples, and it played a significant role in the development of local societies.

Exploration and European Contact: The first European to reach Lake Malawi was the Portuguese explorer Caspar Boccaro in 1616. However, it was David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer, who brought significant attention to the lake in the mid-19th century. Livingstone reached Lake Malawi in 1859 and named it Lake Nyasa. His explorations and writings about the region drew the interest of European powers.

Colonial Period: In the late 19th century, European powers, particularly Britain and Germany, sought to establish control over the lake and its surrounding territories. The Scramble for Africa led to the partitioning of the region, with the British claiming the majority of the lake's western shore, which became the British Protectorate of Nyasaland (present-day Malawi). The eastern shore fell under German influence and later became part of Tanzania.

Independence and Modern Era: Nyasaland gained independence from British colonial rule in 1964 and became the Republic of Malawi, with Lake Malawi as a central feature of the country. The lake has played a crucial role in the economic and social development of the region, providing a source of water, fish, and transportation. Today, Lake Malawi is known for its biodiversity, including a diverse array of fish species, some of which are unique to the lake.

Despite its historical significance, Lake Malawi has also been a source of contention between Malawi and Tanzania due to a territorial dispute over the lake's boundaries and potential oil reserves beneath its waters. This ongoing dispute underscores the complex historical and geopolitical factors associated with the lake.

Is Lake Malawi the largest lake in the world?

No, Lake Malawi is not the largest lake in the world by surface area, but it is one of the African Great Lakes and holds significance as the third-largest lake on the continent. In terms of surface area, Lake Malawi ranks behind two other African Great Lakes: Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika.

Here's a brief comparison:

Lake Victoria:

  • Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and the second-largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. It is shared by three East African countries: Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya.

Lake Tanganyika:

  • Lake Tanganyika is the second-largest lake in Africa and the second-deepest lake in the world. It is situated in the Great Rift Valley and is shared by four countries: Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Zambia.

Lake Malawi:

  • Lake Malawi, also known as Lake Nyasa in Tanzania and Lago Niassa in Mozambique, is the third-largest lake in Africa by surface area. It is located in the East African Rift and is primarily surrounded by Malawi, with portions of its shoreline extending into Tanzania and Mozambique.

While Lake Malawi is not the largest by surface area, it is notable for its biodiversity, clear waters, and the unique cichlid fish species that inhabit its depths. Each of these African Great Lakes has its own ecological importance and contributes to the region's natural diversity.

Where is Lake Malawi located?

Lake Malawi is located in southeastern Africa and is part of the East African Rift system. It is situated between Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique. The lake is elongated in shape and runs approximately north-south.

The majority of Lake Malawi's western shore belongs to Malawi, and the country's name is derived from the lake. The eastern shore is shared between Tanzania and Mozambique. The lake is also known by different names in the countries that border it—Lake Nyasa in Tanzania and Lago Niassa in Mozambique.

The coordinates for Lake Malawi are approximately 12.0°S latitude and 34.0°E longitude. The lake is the third-largest of the African Great Lakes by surface area and the second deepest, making it a prominent geographical feature in the region.

Mozambique: For the Mozambican side, you might consider flying into airports like Mavalane International Airport (MPM) in Maputo or Beira International Airport (BEW). From these cities, you can travel overland to reach lakeside destinations like Cobue or Metangula.

2. Overland Travel:

Before planning your trip, it's essential to check travel advisories, visa requirements, and entry regulations for the specific countries you plan to visit. Additionally, transportation options may vary, so it's a good idea to research and plan your route based on your starting point and intended destination along Lake Malawi.

When is the best time to visit Lake Malawi?

The best time to visit Lake Malawi largely depends on your preferences and the activities you plan to engage in. Lake Malawi experiences distinct seasons, including a wet season and a dry season. Here's a breakdown of the different seasons to help you decide when to visit:

Dry Season (May to October):

  • This period is generally considered the best time to visit Lake Malawi.
  • The weather is dry, and rainfall is minimal, leading to sunny and warm conditions.
  • The months from June to August are particularly popular as temperatures are moderate, and the risk of malaria is lower.
  • It's an excellent time for water activities like snorkeling, diving, and swimming, as the lake waters are clear.

Wet Season (November to April):

  • This season is characterized by higher temperatures and increased humidity.
  • The wet season brings rainfall, especially from November to March, which can sometimes lead to flooding in certain areas.
  • The landscape is lush and green during this time.
  • While the wet season can be a good time for birdwatching and enjoying the green scenery, it might not be ideal for water activities due to reduced water visibility and the potential for rougher conditions.

Shoulder Seasons (April and November):

  • April is a transitional month between the wet and dry seasons. It may still experience some rainfall but can be a good time for budget travelers as accommodation prices may be lower.
  • November marks the end of the wet season, and while there may still be some rainfall, it's a time when the landscape starts to become greener.

It's essential to consider your specific interests and activities when planning your visit. If you prefer a balance between pleasant weather and vibrant landscapes, the shoulder seasons might be appealing. However, if you're focused on water activities and sunny weather, the dry season is the most recommended time to visit Lake Malawi. Additionally, always check for any travel advisories and health recommendations before planning your trip.

The clear waters of this lake are also one of the world’s premier fresh water dive and snorkelling spots and the major tourist attraction – the water being broadly safe for swimming. Many water sports are available – including fishing, water skiing, windsurfing and sailing.

Located within the Western Rift Valley, Lake Malawi is the third biggest and second deepest lake in the continent, as well as the ninth largest in the world . The Lake is one of the African Great Lakes , and the southernmost lake in the East African Rift system, situated between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania.

The Lake is said to be home to more fish species than any other body of freshwater, including over 1000 species of cichlids, and was officially announced a reserve by the Mozambican Government in June, 2011. Lake Malawi was discovered by explorer David Livingstone more than 150 years back, and though it is completely landlocked , the country is not denied an ocean. The Lake is vast and fringed by sun-kissed shores, making it a picturesque paradise . The sparkling water invites visitors to partake in a range of water sport activities, whilst the warm sand attracts those who wish to spend some time sunbathing or indulging in a good book while catching some welcome beams of sunlight.

  • Further Info

The Lake is between 560 to 580 kilometres in length, and around 75 kilometres in width at its widest point. In total, the water of the Lake covers an area of approximately 29,600 square kilometres, and has a maximum depth of an astonishing 706 metres. The biggest river that feeds the lake is the Ruhuhu River, and at the southern end of Lake Malawi lies an outlet that runs into Mozambique’s enormous Zambezi River.

Due to the rich fish harvest in the region, Lake Malawi plays a crucial role in supporting the economy. Fishing villages are peppered along the coast and the traditional industry and practices tend to draw the attention of tourists. In spite of the Lake’s popularity, there are still long stretches of unspoiled golden sand along the lakeshore, lapped by glimmering waters. Kayaking, sailing, snorkelling, scuba diving and water skiing are but a few of the activities in which to participate here.

Tours by lake vary from the renowned motor vessel, the Ilala, to sailing in a sea-going yacht. Cruises into the upper reaches of the Great Shire River are also available, and will provide you with a spectacular experience with mother nature. Lake Malawi has acted as a main food source to its surrounding wildlife for millennia. This is due to the fact that the Lake’s water is rich in fish, such as the chambo. Some of the fish that are caught are exported from Malawi, but the wild fish population is increasingly endangered as a result of overfishing and water pollution.

The painted hunting dog was said to be extinct in Malawi, but recent research in Kasungu National Park has discovered a pack of 17 painted dogs. A project named Carnivore Conservation Malawi was established by researcher Duncan Yearly, and is currently attempting to raise awareness and funding to further the safeguarding of these threatened Malawi mammals.

It is believed that these dogs seasonally travel across the border from Malawi into Zambia to hunt within the South Luangwa Valley. Other wildlife to be seen in and around Lake Malawi include crocodiles, hippos, monkeys, and a great concentration of African fish eagles that prey on the fish in the Lake. If paying a visit to the area, be sure to make a stopover at this beautiful natural landmark.

Unsurprisingly for a Lake of its size, there is a good range of boat trips available on Lake Malawi . For a simple organised pleasure trip of up to a few hours there is a choice of destinations – places of interest along the shore, or small islands just offshore. Traditional wooden boats or modern fibreglass speed boats are available. Some trips will include snorkelling or fishing along the way.

If only one pleasure trip is to be taken, it should be out to the Lake Malawi National Park . Brightly coloured fish are easily visible through the crystal clear water, and are eager to swarm round, and feed from, any hand placed in the water holding a piece of bread or biscuit. As well as the shore and islands accessed from Cape Maclear/Chembe Village, it’s now also possible to explore the Marelli Island Archipelago (also part of the Park) off Senga Bay.

Leisurely cruises on larger boats can also be arranged from one or two of the main hotels – to last hours or days. As well as scheduled trips by motor launch, there are sailing cruises. Catamarans can be chartered, complete with skipper. Daytime cruising can be complemented by diving, snorkelling or swimming and overnight beach camping. Based at  The Makokola Retreat , the  mv Sunbird  is a 22m cruiser which sails along Lake Malawi, past Mangochi , and through Lake Malombe before entering the River Shire in Liwonde National Park.

Perhaps the ultimate boat journey on the Lake is on the  Ila l a , a large motorised vessel offering a scheduled ferry service up and down the lake. This is a functional ship much used by local people, but also offers passage and cabin accommodation to tourists. Bookings can be made through the local Tour & Safari Companies

Boat safaris are also offered along sections of the River Shire, particularly through  Liwonde National Park  and now Majete Wildlife Reserve .

Sunset boat cruise on Lake Malawi

Published 23 January 2021 · Updated 12 February 2023

Cape Maclear, also known as Chembe, is a small tourist and fishing village in the Nankumba Peninsula, at the southern end of Lake Malawi.

Chembe Village and the surrounding islands sit in Lake Malawi national park, the first freshwater national park in the world. The park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The waters are home to hundreds of cichlid fish species, or mbuna , nearly all endemic to Lake Malawi.

A photostory of a sunset Booze and Cruise tour of Cape Maclear with Jama Yako Tours.

Jama Yako Tour boat in Cape Maclear

Lake Malawi has around 700 species of cichlid fish, nearly all endemic to Lake Malawi. They make their home in the rocky shorelines of the lake and feed on algae. These ornamental fish, also called mbuna ,  are in high demand around the world and are exported by companies including Stuart M Grant Ltd in Salima.

They are also victims of poaching. In November 2019, four Chinese nationals were arrested for illegally entering the national park and fishing the cichlids. They were later fined K13 million (just over $16,000) by a magistrates court in Mangochi.

Cape Maclear bird life

Fish eagle around Thumbi West Island

Lake Malawi National Park has a variety of birdlife including African fish eagles, white-breasted cormorants, wading birds, kingfishers, hornbills, kestrels and swallow-tailed bee-eaters.

Fish eagle around Thumbi West Island in Cape Maclear

Fish eagles live in pairs and are believed to mate for life. The tour guides in the cape have given the different eagle pair’s names like Michelle and Barack, and Ophelia and Macbeth. With a whistle and a call, the guides toss fish into the water which the birds swoop down to collect.

Fish eagle and kite tussle over fish

But there is no shortage of opportunists in the cape. A fish eagle and kite tussling after the kite picked up a fish. Kites will normally prey on young chickens in the villages.

Most of the fish eagles make their home in the Thumbi West island off Chembe.

Ruins of Golden Sands Hotel in Cape Maclear

At the western end of the Chembe beach lies the ruins of Golden Sands Hotel. The hotel, originally called Glengeary Hotel, was built in 1946 and was owned by Mrs Wynne-Jones . The hotel was operational until the early 1990s when it shut down.

Otter Point

Otter Point

Otter Point is on the extreme west end of Chembe Village although the little animals that the place is named after are very elusive. The water markings on the large rocks at the point is evidence of how much the water levels in the lake fluctuate over the years.

Welcome from a monkey at Otter Point

We were greeted by a lone and rather shy vervet monkey. His friends had probably already retreated into the forest for the evening.

Chembe Village is dwarfed on three sides by forested hills inhabited by antelope, baboons, vervet monkeys and birdlife. Thumbi West island, on the left, is also covered in a thick forest with a very small beach and a hiking trail.  There is also Domwe, Mumbo and Elephant islands around the cape.

Cape Maclear Covid-19 hit

Talking to a couple of tour guides and handicraft makers in the area, there is a general feeling of despair due to the slow down of business which has been attributed to Covid-19 travel restrictions. Most lodging facilities in the cape cater primarily to international visitors although you will find some Malawians doing day trips. There was at least one lodge that had been closed and I know of another that has been struggling financially due to low patronage.

Last year, the Cape Maclear Community planned to hold a CapeFest, an event showcasing artists whose proceeds would help build back the tourism community devasted by the impact of Covid-19. The two-day CapeFest2021 Intimate Jazz and Arts Festival will be held from 26 March 2021.

Cape Maclear, probably Malawi’s most intimate tourist village, needs your custom !
