Travel Companions for Seniors – How to Find the Best Travel Partner for You

Many women over 60 love to travel, but don’t want to travel alone. If you’re looking for alternatives to traveling solo, perhaps you would do well to find a good travel partner.

Traveling can be a bit of a stress-test for a friendship – being in new surroundings with a different schedule, different food, and even different customs and languages can present challenges to your friendship if you’re not prepared. Some otherwise wonderful friends are not always the most ideal travel companions.

Before you embark on a long journey, it’s best to think ahead and talk in advance to make sure you and your travel partner are well suited to travel together.

Here are a few tips for how to communicate and plan to find the perfect travel partner:

Discuss Your Goals for the Trip

What do you most want to experience on this trip? Are you hoping for a relaxing visit to the beach, or a bustling sightseeing tour with an action-packed itinerary? Do you want to spend time alone, or stay together most of the time? Do you want to meet new people, or get to know each other better? Do you want to experience serenity or stimulation – do you want to retreat from civilization, or get caught up in the excitement of an urban center?

It’s best to have a sense of what kind of vacation experience you want to get, prior to embarking on the journey. Talk with your travel partner about your hopes and expectations. Even if you don’t agree on absolutely every aspect of the trip, make sure you have enough common ground and can support each other in finding your ideal vacation experiences along the way.

Choose a Good “Roommate”

It’s wonderful to have a travel partner to share the adventure with – but make sure you are compatible. Is your travel partner easy to get along with in close quarters, or do they have a lot of particular needs that make it difficult to share space together? Do you enjoy each other’s company? Can you have fun talking to each other for hours – and more importantly, perhaps, can you enjoy the silence together and share space without constantly having to entertain each other?

Talk About Your Budget

Traveling with a friend is a great way to save money on accommodation and meal expenses, but make sure that you both have the same idea of what you want this vacation to cost.

Will you be splitting the costs of the trip (hotels, restaurant meals, tours, etc.) or each paying your own way separately? Does one of you have more expensive needs than the other – will you both be happy in a no-frills hotel, or do you need a more deluxe set of accommodations?

Talking about these issues in advance can avoid any misunderstandings or hard feelings once you are on vacation.

Take a Short Trip Together First

It’s often best to take a test run with your new travel partner, to make sure you can be a good team on the road. Before you book a round-trip ticket to the far side of the world, consider taking a short weekend trip to stay at a nearby Bed and Breakfast.

Choosing the right travel partner can make your vacations even more enjoyable and often affordable. Just make sure to discuss some expectations upfront to make sure you both can get the vacation experience you were hoping for – without any misunderstandings or disappointments along the way.

Have you ever traveled with a friend? What did you learn from the experience that you can share with the rest of the community? Do you have any other senior travel tips to share? Please join the conversation.

Finding Senior Travel Companions

You're an avid traveler, fascinated by unknown places and new experiences. You know where you'd like to travel and have done some trip planning . There's just one stumbling block: You want to find a travel companion, someone who wishes to see the world and has a travel budget similar to yours.

If you're single and retired, it's not necessarily easy to find others to match your travel pace. Thankfully there are more resources now than ever before to connect adults who want to set off and explore together, whether it be a local day trip or a month-long backpacking experience.

Identify Your Vacation Goals and Travel Style

If you want to travel with at least one other person, you will need to spend some time thinking about your travel goals and travel style. If you don't know how you like to travel, you will not be able to explain your travel expectations to potential travel companions, so consider the many travel options trips include before beginning your search.

  • Hotel rooms: Do you prefer luxury comfort, mid-range hotel accommodations, or bargain hostels?
  • Dining: Do you want to experience Michelin star-level dining, local favorites, chain restaurants, or fast food? Would you prefer to cook your own food in a vacation cottage or efficiency suite?
  • Transportation: Are you comfortable taking public transportation or do you prefer to drive your car or travel by taxicab? Are you willing to walk long distances?
  • Sightseeing: Which travel activities suit you best? Museums, adventure and outdoor travel, historic sights, guided tours , spas, and shopping excursions are just some of the options you should consider.

It's important to know how you like to travel. Going on a trip with another person is an intimate experience, and you'll want to be sure that all travelers have the same expectations before taking off.

Word of Mouth

One of the best ways to find a like-minded travel companion is to tell everyone you know that you want to travel, but need someone to go with you to keep costs down. Ask friends and family to pass along your contact information if they meet someone who wants to travel and is trustworthy.

Senior Centers

Depending on where you live, your local senior center might be just the place to find a travel companion. Many senior centers offer both day trips and weekend adventures, but even if you don't find those destinations interesting, you can meet people who enjoy traveling at one of the center's other programs. Try an exercise class—you'll want to be as fit as possible for your next trip—or a cultural class, such as music appreciation. You might just bump into someone who could be a future travel companion.

Travel Groups

Travel groups come in all varieties. Sometimes these groups are called travel clubs or vacation clubs because they often have some type of membership requirement, which could include membership fees or dues. You may be able to find a travel group through your church, place of employment, public library, or school alumni association. Once you find a congenial group, you can take trips with the travel group or plan an independent trip with travel companions from that group.

If you are looking at travel groups to join, be sure you understand the difference between a travel group that charges a small amount ($5 to $10) per month for dues and a vacation club that requires a membership fee of several thousand dollars. In 2013, the Better Business Bureau's Dallas and North Texas office published an investigation into travel club selling practices, focusing on the vacation club scheme and the high membership fees some vacation clubs charge.

Online Groups & Meetups

Websites and online communities like Meetup.com , for example, allow members to search for, join, and even start groups dedicated to travel, dining, and almost anything else that interests them. For example, a meetup group called "50+ Singles Travel and Social Group" organizes day trips, social events, cruises , tours, and visits to special events in the Baltimore area.

Always exercise caution when revealing personal information to members of an online group. Never agree to meet an online acquaintance in a private place; always meet in public. Use good judgment and trust your instincts when deciding to participate in a group event. Meet a potential travel companion several times before agreeing to book a trip together.

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

active travel partner

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations include Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, and the company arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

People start thinking about their retirement bucket list and how to travel with companionship as they retire. The wrinkle in travel for seniors came when COVID-19 forced many older adults to re-think or cancel their plans. Even now, COVID and vaccination requirements can complicate the most well-laid plans. Older adults are the most vaccinated group in the US and feel more confident about traveling now.

Jump ahead to these sections:

What is a senior traveling companion, and what do they do, how much does a senior traveling companion cost, pros and cons of senior traveling companions, how to find a senior traveling companion for you or a loved one.

The senior travel industry is rebounding. Travel agencies that cater to older adults reported significant increases in bookings in 2021. As eager as older adults are to take to the roads and airways, safety, access to medical care if needed, and companionship are top of mind. People are living longer, and as the average age of a senior traveler increases, so does the desire for protection and guidance. Many seniors refuse to let their physical conditions prevent them from traveling.

Senior traveling companion services are an excellent option for single or partnered older adults who want the security of another person or group to accompany them. In cases where someone requires hands-on assistance, a companion is a necessity. You may not have considered this option before, but after learning more about a senior traveling companion, you might decide this service is just the ticket to the grand vacation you have been dreaming of.

A senior traveling companion is someone who can be younger and accompany a senior on a trip as a professional planner, tour guide, or caregiver. Or a senior traveling companion is another older adult or group of adults who travel to the same destination together.  Each category of companion will have different tasks and motivations.

Travel buddy or companion

A travel buddy is paired with you for similar interests and destinations. A travel buddy or companion service will:

  • Allow you to pair with a preferred travel companion. Some services are similar to dating sites where you can designate gender, duration, location of trips, etc.
  • You can contact the people you think are compatible to discuss and decide whether to travel together.
  • A travel buddy service is for singles, couples, and groups.
  • Using a travel companion service is not necessary. You can use word of mouth, the local senior center, or a social media shout-out for a buddy to travel with.

Travel planner

Plenty of senior travel planners will plan your trip and find others to join. A travel planning service will be more expensive since they handle all travel details. A senior travel planner will:

  • Offer a wide selection of cultural and adventure trips to suit any physical level. Many of these trips will be local and others international with varying lengths and expenses.
  • A travel planner will plan every detail, from flight itineraries, hotels, rental car arrangements, daytime activities, and the number of people on the trip.
  • Some travel planners will not only plan your trip but find a suitable companion for the one you want to take.
  • Travel planners will investigate all vaccination requirements and ensure you comply with local health laws.

Senior travel clubs

Senior travel clubs are groups of seniors who pay membership fees to the club and get vacation packages at bulk rates. Travel clubs specialize in everything from active adventures to academic and cultural trips. Of note are reports of scam travel clubs, so vet any travel club carefully to ensure they are legitimate.

Medical and transit companion

Many older travelers have medical problems, cognitive impairment, or mobility issues. In these cases, a senior can hire someone to travel with them to assist with the trip and care needs. Assistance can consist of:

  • Managing medications
  • Helping with bathing and dressing
  • Checking vital signs
  • Find health services at your destination.
  • Handling any durable medical equipment needs

The cost of a senior traveling companion depends entirely on the type of service you want and need. If you simply want to book through a tour agency that caters to seniors, you will pay your portion of the trip, and the other travelers will pay theirs. Most travel group plans offer a discount if you share a room. If you are going through a service to find traveling companions, there will be a membership fee to find compatible travel buddies.

For seniors who want to hire someone to accompany them on their travels, the cost will depend on the tasks required. ZipRecruiter esports that the average hourly pay for a travel companion in 2022 was $27.89 an hour. This hourly cost can be significantly higher if more assistance is needed, especially if a nurse accompanies you on a trip. You will also likely need to pay for all their trip costs, including airfare, meals, other transport, and tourist entrance fees.

Senior traveling companions can be a terrific option, but you will want to consider some additional details before taking the plunge. Let’s review some of the pros and cons of a traveling companion.

Pros of a senior traveling companion

  • The primary reason people choose a traveling companion through an agency is the convenience of paying someone else to do all the planning, which puts less stress on you. A senior traveling companion program can handle as many or as few travel details as you want.
  • The opportunity to meet new people and form friendships
  • Another benefit of a senior traveling companion is the safety and security of having a companion with you at all times.  Also, an itinerary tailored to your comfort level where there are few surprises can provide a sense of security to many travelers.
  • The assurance that someone will take care of your care needs.
  • A senior traveling companion allows you to explore destinations and things to do in retirement that you may not have considered before.

Cons of a senior traveling companion

A traveling companion is not for everyone, and it may not be possible even for those who prefer a companion. You may not find anyone you feel comfortable with, or the cost is too high.

  • The cost of a senior traveling companion can be prohibitive, especially if you need and want a companion to take care of your medical needs. Even in programs where everyone pays their costs, the pricing will be higher than if you planned the trip yourself. The do-it-yourself programs where you pay a fee to find a compatible traveling companion and do all the planning yourself are probably the most affordable.
  • The appeal of having everything organized for you is the very aspect of a traveling companion that some people don’t like. There could be a lack of travel flexibility. Many travelers prefer the unpredictability and spontaneous nature of unorganized travel. Finding themselves on a trip where they wish to change the itinerary is a downside for those folks.
  • The whole idea of a senior traveling companion is to have company on a trip and have someone to share the experience. But there is always the possibility of incompatibility, and you won’t find out until you are on your way. Sharing a room with a senior traveling companion is usually less expensive, but you give up privacy.
  • There is the possibility that you book an active travel trip that turns out to be too challenging. When you are with a group, you don’t have the option of scaling back the activity level.

Finding a senior traveling companion for you or your loved one could be lengthy, depending on what you are looking for. You may be surprised by all of the group travel options for seniors. If you or a loved one is looking for a companion that will provide more personal care as a senior travel companion, you will need to vet the company and the companion. Consider these questions:

  • What experience does the companion have, and on what types of trips?
  • Can you provide references for the specific companion that will come on the trip?
  • What are your safety protocols?
  • Are your companions CPR and first aid certified?
  • What insurance options are there through your company, and what does it cover?
  • How do you communicate with other family members during the trip?

If you are looking for travel companies, reviewing choices online might be best. One feature to consider is if you are looking for an “active” vacation which could entail hiking, biking, and walking. Most legitimate companies will have a guide to the activity level for each trip so you don’t overextend your physical capabilities.

Perhaps a river cruise or more extensive cruise is more up your alley. Or your interests may be more cultural or academic. Try and narrow your interests so you don’t waste time investigating companies that don’t offer what you want.

Other ideas for finding people locally to accompany you and others on trips are Meetup , senior centers, and Facebook. The other possibility is to reach out to friends who might have an interest in traveling together. If you find one or more people willing to travel and can agree on a place, a travel agent can make as many arrangements as you want.

A Senior Traveling Companion

A senior traveling companion can be a great way to access travel and adventure safely.  The key to a successful experience is to be open to a new travel companion while choosing your trip wisely. Accept that no trip or companion is perfect but that the journey will likely be one you will remember.

How to Choose a Travel Partner

Last Updated: February 13, 2022 References

Traveling solo gives you the freedom to create your own schedule and do as you please. But traveling with a partner has its benefits, too. For example, a travel partner can provide moral support and celebrate in the rewards of firsthand experience with unfamiliar locations and cultures. To ensure that a travel partner is one who can add value to your journey, choose someone who has similar travel preferences and personality characteristics. There are several steps you can take to find a travel partner who will enhance your journey.

Picking a Compatible Travel Partner

Step 1 Look for someone with common interests.

  • Think about your travel priorities. Make a list of all of your "must dos".
  • For example, maybe you are planning a trip to France. If visiting The Louvre is a priority, make sure your travel partner wants to go, too.
  • Remember that you don't have to do all of the activities together. But when you travel with someone, it is fun to do at least some things with each other.

Step 2 Consider energy levels.

  • Think about what type of trip you want to have. Are you looking forward to walking a lot? Do you plan to be doing a lot of physical activities, such as scuba diving?
  • If you anticipate being active, try to look for a friend who enjoys being active. Maybe your pal from the gym would be a good choice.
  • Likewise, if you plan to chill, take that into account. If you want to spend your days relaxing on the beach, you don't want a travel partner who will be constantly nagging you to get moving.

Step 3 Discuss financial plans.

  • Before traveling with a friend, make sure that you are on the same page concerning money. You don't want to be planning an expensive getaway at the same time your friend is looking for budget travel.
  • Try asking specific questions. You can say, "How much do you think we should spend on a hotel each night?"
  • You can also plan a budget together. Say, "Let's sit down and work out how much we want to spend per day."

Step 4 Have an honest conversation.

  • Schedule a time to sit down and talk. Try saying, "I know we've talked hypothetically about traveling through Europe together. Let's have coffee this week and actually talk that through."
  • Be upfront. If there is something about you that your friend needs to know, go a head and share that.
  • For example, you might need to say, "I'm a nervous flyer. Is there anything I should know about traveling with you?"

Step 5 Find someone who is flexible.

  • Choose a travel partner who can adjust. You don't want to be stuck with someone who declares the whole trip ruined if you have to adjust plans.
  • Travel with a friend who is pretty easygoing. Do you have a buddy who is willing to go out for sushi, even if you'd planned on having pizza? That person might be easy to get along with.
  • Make sure that you're flexible, too. Remember that you're on vacation to relax and have fun. Try to just go with the flow if you have to change your agenda.

Meeting a New Travel Partner

Step 1 Talk to a friend of a friend.

  • Ask your friends if they know anyone who wants to travel with you. For example, maybe your friend has a cousin who has always wanted to take an Alaskan cruise, just like the one you are planning.
  • Use social media to make connections. Make a post looking for a travel partner, tagging multiple friends. That way, their friends will see your post, too.
  • Make sure to try to meet your new travel partner in person before your trip. If that's not possible, correspond by e-mail or phone and get to know one another.

Step 2 Stay at a hostel.

  • A hostel is a great place to meet new friends. These inexpensive lodgings are very common in Europe.
  • Staying at a hostel is often a communal experience. Make some reservations to stay at various hostels, and get ready to meet your fellow travelers.
  • Connect with a new group of people. If you meet some people that you get along with, ask if you can go along with them to the next city.

Step 3 Find a gap year program.

  • Gap year travel is very common among Europeans. It is becoming increasingly popular in the United States.
  • Search the internet for a study abroad program. Based on your interests, you will be placed with a group of like-minded travelers.
  • Try using a reputable website such as Go Overseas. They have options for short and long trips, with a variety of locations and objectives.

Step 4 Join a travel group.

  • Web sites such as Globe Trooper offer many traveler designed trips. You can use their site to meet other people who want to visit great ski resorts in Europe.
  • These sites offer a variety of trips. Make sure to look for ones planned by people who share your interests.
  • When you are traveling with a group of new people, the same rules apply as when you travel with a friend. Make sure you have the same interests, energy level, and financial plans.

Making the Most of Your Trip

Step 1 Do your research.

  • Before you travel, take some time to do your research. Start by reading reviews.
  • Read traveler reviews of every place you plan to stay. You want to know if other people experienced big problems like the heat not working or the doors not locking.
  • Use a site like Trip Advisor. They post multiple reviews for every aspect of traveling. [5] X Research source

Step 2 Manage your expectations.

  • Try not to get upset if something goes wrong. For example, don't consider the whole trip ruined if one of your adventures gets rained out.
  • Plan to have a good time. But be ready to laugh it off if something unexpectedly goes awry.
  • Maybe you're traveling in New York, and the restaurant lost your reservation. That's disappointing, but it's also a great excuse to try a slice of famous NYC pizza.

Step 3 Disconnect from technology.

  • Don't check social media multiple times a day. Try to enjoy your own experiences.
  • Focus on being in the moment. Look around at your surroundings, and find somewhere new to explore.
  • Relax and enjoy. Make an effort to forget about work and responsibilities. You're on vacation! [8] X Research source

How to Find a Good Travel Partner (& How to Be One)

Please share if you enjoy this content!

Many people ask me why I enjoy traveling solo, and I have a lot of responses, including that it’s not easy to find a good travel partner. No matter how close of friends you are with someone, it can be difficult to travel together.

This is especially true on an international trip where you don’t speak the local language.

Being a good travel partner isn’t always about compromising, especially if doing so will frustrate you or cause you not to have a good time. It’s about being as considerate of yourself as the person you’re traveling with and ensuring everyone gets most of what they want.

This post includes my thoughts on what makes a good travel companion.

1. Reach Agreement Before the Trip

What kind of trip do you expect to go on? Is this going to be a five-star splurge or a bare-bones budget vacation? Are you seeking a relaxing getaway or a jam-packed exploration of a location? City or country?

What is the budget you’re able to spend, and do you both agree? One way to have disagreement and frustration very quickly is if you don’t agree on the kind of vacation you are going on.

Being a good travel partner starts at the beginning of the planning stages. I recommend discussing this when planning the trip to ensure you are on the same page. Then, continue the discussion with the decisions that need to be made.

This dialogue continues until the end of the trip as well. There are a lot of decisions you make while you’re traveling, and it’s important to come to an agreement that you are both ok with.

travel buddy, travel partner, travel companion, finding a travel partner, find a travel partner

Areas of Potential Friction

Even amongst the best of friends, you can have very different views about your vacation and your expectations during it. When you start planning your trip, keep these things in mind and discuss any issues throughout.

  • Total budget : It’s important to determine an approximate budget before you travel to ensure you’re on the same page about accommodation and activities.
  • Priorities : Is cost the driving factor in your decisions or experience? Do you want to be active, see certain things, and connect with people? Knowing your own priorities and those of your travel partner is key to agreeing.
  • Where to stay/accommodation : discuss your ideal place to stay before you book, along with your budget. Do you want a hotel or an apartment? Separate bedrooms? What amenities are important?
  • Activities : What are the things you most want to do on this trip? Do you enjoy being active, like hiking or biking, or are you more interested in sitting in cafes and watching the world go by?
  • Early or late start : Are you more of a morning person or a night owl? Do you take forever to get ready in the morning, or are you in for a quick shower, then you want to dash out the door?
  • Downtime : Do you like to go for 12-hour stretches or take breaks during the day, either when you’re out and about or going back to the room to rest?
  • Alone time : Are you used to being with someone 24/7, or do you need some “me time.” What does that look like to you: reading a book in quiet, separate rooms, solo time?
  • Dining/types of cuisine : Besides the budget, what type of restaurants do you enjoy eating in? Take out, sit down, street vendors? Do you want to dress up or go casual? Local and ethnic or American-style food (or that of your country).

What to Do When You Disagree

You don’t want to get up before 8 a.m., and your travel partner wants to be up and out by then. Or you have simple needs and want to stay at budget accommodation in a safe area, but your travel buddy has loftier expectations.

Take the time to talk through these things and work towards a compromise you can both be happy with.

When I went to Italy, I had a day when I was feeling exhausted. My friend wanted to go to a market, but I was not up for all of the hustle and bustle.

Instead of trying to talk her out of it or her trying to talk me into it, I encouraged her to go and enjoy herself while I took a nap. I was nice and rested when she returned, eager to get back out there to see more.

Alternatively, we could have agreed to go to the market on a different day and do something more chill instead.

Don’t be afraid to do your own thing for a while if something is significant to you. Or if there’s something your friend wants to do that you don’t, maybe you can offer to do something he wants to do for him to come with you for what’s important to you.

Compromise and being considerate of each other are what it’s all about.

2. Share Responsibility and Effort

A lot of work goes into planning a trip, before the trip and during. Vacations are fun, but a lot of work goes into making it that way unless you go on a guided trip where everything is planned for you.

There is research to do before you go, bookings to be made, and decisions to be made before and during the trip. It’s a good idea to expect to share those responsibilities to have a good time on the trip.

Several people I have traveled with assumed that since I travel so much, I love to do all the work. The truth is that I enjoy going on great trips, and I’m willing to do the work needed to achieve the result I want.

So, if you’re not offering to help with the research, then offer to do something else.

Some Examples

For example, on a recent trip I took with a friend to Alaska, I did most of the research before the trip. She did all of the driving.

I was over the moon as I hadn’t driven on the snow and ice for many years and was a little concerned, especially at night (I am NOT a night owl). She took that worry from me, so we both felt it was a great share of work.

Alternatively, I went on a trip to Costa Rica with a friend, which was the opposite experience. I planned everything before the trip and even heard her tell someone that she let me because I love doing it (she never asked if that was the case).

Then, I had to make every decision during the trip. This included when to go places, where to eat, and research restaurants. I tried to go for a walk to get some “me” time, and she insisted on going.

Needless to say, it was a very frustrating trip and not a fun experience for me at all.

3. Talk About Splitting Costs

Talk about how you plan to split costs during your trip before you leave. Do you plan to alternate meals or split the bills? Will you get the rental car, and the other get meals?

Or will one person pay for everything, and the other will pay after the trip? However you do it, make sure you agree and both feel comfortable.

4. Have Patience

Traveling can be stressful, particularly internationally, when you don’t speak the local language. Patience certainly is not one of my virtues, but when traveling, you have to dig deep to find it where you don’t know you have it.

I remember on my first trip to Asia, after a painfully long and sleepless flight, we arrived at a ridiculously crowded airport. I don’t recall what set my friend off, but it was about figuring out where we had to go.

He had a bit of a meltdown at the airport. That was ok—I was on it. I suggested he sit down and watch our bags, and I’d head out to figure things out.

It could have escalated to an argument since we were exhausted and cranky, but it didn’t. Don’t worry; I paid him back later in the trip with my meltdown.

He was equally patient with me and cared while I cooled off. Travel is all about teamwork when you travel with others.

5. Consideration and Compromise

No matter how close of friends you may be with your travel companion, you will have differences of opinion on things during the trip. How you handle it is essential to make for a great time on vacation.

Do you want to see something your friend doesn’t? Or does your travel partner want to stay in, but you want to go out? Take turns with the decision-making; remember, it’s ok to do things independently.

travel buddy, travel partner, travel companion, finding a travel partner, find a travel partner

6. Communication Before & During the Trip

It is crucial that you express your needs and wants during a trip. Of course, this is important at any time in any relationship. When you are traveling with a person, it’s essential.

Say what you want or what you need, and listen when the other person does the same. Although you may be friends, hanging out together and living together, even for a week or two, is very different.

Ask questions instead of assuming. Is your friend in a bad mood or angry with you? Ask the question so you can handle it so it doesn’t fester on the trip. I didn’t heed this advice once, and it strained a friendship.

I got angry and didn’t want to start a fight, so I didn’t talk to my travel partner for a couple of days on the trip. Talk about uncomfortable and awkward! It’s a shame, too, as we had a good time before then.

How to Find a Good Travel Partner

Finding a travel buddy can be challenging, and finding a good one is even more challenging. Before you consider joining a person on a trip, it’s essential to consider your wants and expectations.

Talk about them with your potential travel partner to see if you align. When you get frustrated, as you invariably may at some point in the trip, step back and consider if you are a good travel partner.

Think about how you can open a dialogue to work through the issue so you can continue to have fun.

18 Ideal Destinations for Couples Who Can’t Agree on Whether to Chill or Adventure on Vacation

Opposites may attract, but they don’t always see eye to eye when it comes to traveling together. Our travel columnist has tips on how to meet in the middle—and where to go that will make you both happy.

Any number of concerns are on our radar as we plan our next trip, from serious issues like how destinations are working to mitigate tourists’ environmental impact to inconveniences like months-long passport wait times. In this column, our travel expert addresses your questions about how to navigate the world.

My partner always wants to be super active on vacation—every day is filled with major hikes, surfing lessons, guided explorations of nearby archeological sites, zip lining. While that’s fun, it’s also exhausting, and I really want vacation to be a break from work to chill out. What kinds of trips can we take, and where could we go together, that would make both of us happy? —R&R Deprived

This is so relatable. My idea of a relaxing vacation involves waking up at dawn to surf, cycling to off-the-beaten-path taco shacks, and earning my sunset margarita with an epic hike. So when a recent boyfriend who described himself as adventurous surprised me with a long weekend in Mexico’s Riviera Maya—our first ever-trip together—I envisioned action-packed days spent swimming in cenotes and exploring ancient ruins.

Our all-inclusive resort was my first clue that our ideas of the perfect getaway might be different. Also, he didn’t book a rental car and only packed flip-flops. For three days, he blissfully worked on his tan poolside while pounding Coronas. I tried my best to chill in the lounger beside him, gently suggesting we paddle or snorkel. “We’re on vacation, babe,” he’d say. Venture out to dinner perhaps? “Why leave the resort when meals are free?” he’d argue. In short: his idea of paradise was my idea of prison.

Vacation compatibility can make or break a relationship, be it romantic or platonic. Clear communication about each other’s expectations is key to avoiding frustrations and making sure both people have a great time. “Often one partner will end up acquiescing to appease the other and neglect their own needs or desires, which is unfortunate and unnecessary,” says Sandra Possing, a San Francisco Bay Area life coach.

Possing suggests having a brainstorming session where each person throws out ideas for destinations and experiences. Exploring various options can help determine a trip that satisfies each person’s needs. “Rather than prioritizing getting your own way, try to prioritize communication and connection,” she says. “Maybe the outcome ends up favoring one person this time, but acknowledge that and agree that the next time it can lean the other way.”

Vacation compatibility can make or break a relationship, be it romantic or platonic.

For years Katherine Cusack, who lives in Brooklyn, would try to keep up with her husband on vacation, only to end up stressed and exhausted. “He’s a former Division III basketball player and needs to be constantly moving and seeking adventure,” she says. “I need time to switch gears, smell the flowers, breathe the fresh air, listen to tropical birds and waves crash. This doesn’t mean I don’t seek adventure. I just also long for the art of doing nothing—to be present, thankful, and reconnect with nature and myself.”

After lots of trial and error, the couple discovered that Hawaii offered enough of what they both love: beaches where she could go shelling while he bodysurfed, boat trips where he could snorkel while she sipped a mai tai. They always return to Maui first, where they feel they can relax into a routine, and then spend a few days exploring another island.

Setting up a trip you’ll both love is not as hard as you think, but it will benefit from some forethought. The following tips will help put you on the path to vacation success.

Choose an Appropriate Destination

If your partner hates the cold, Antarctica or Greenland probably aren’t the best picks. If you don’t do well at altitude, the Rockies or the Alps might be problematic. But you’ve got to meet in the middle. How do you start narrowing things down?

Owen Gaddis, a former travel agent who now plans vacations to meet his adrenaline-fueled nature and his wife’s more laid-back sensibilities, recommends seeking out a country or region that offers something for both parties.

“If you are a super active traveler, you might be bored to death in an overwater villa in Bora Bora,” he says. “If you are super laid-back, you might be wasting an incredible opportunity to explore Patagonia.”

Gaddis suggests looking for locales that offer enough activities to entice the laid-back traveler to get out of their comfort zone—because it’s more fun to share an adventure—but also amenities and surroundings conducive to unplugging and recharging, so the active traveler is persuaded to slow down. It’s also easier to relax if you’re headed to a destination that one or both of you have been to before, he adds, as one of you will know what to expect.

Cari Gray, founder of the Toronto-based active-travel company Gray and Co., regularly works with clients who have an assortment of interests, a factor that comes into play when planning multigenerational trips with people of mixed ages and fitness levels. She says it’s important to consider seasonality as well. The Mediterranean might sound relaxing in summer, but that’s also the high period, which can mean vying for restaurant reservations and even a spot on the beach. Will you and your partner argue about that, the crowds, or possibly higher prices for visiting at that time? It’s worth discussing.

Places That Cater to Active and Laid-Back Agendas

Travel experts Elizabeth Gordon of Extraordinary Journeys in Santa Fe, Brook Lavery of Local Foreigner, and Robyn Mark of Mayamaya Travel, both based in New York City, have weighed in with a few destinations that tend to check all the boxes.

California’s Central Coast

A couple looks out at Monterey Bay, California

Amenity-rich hotels with great spas entice travelers to kick back after a day of cycling, hiking through the redwoods, surfing, or wine tasting. Base yourself at Granada Hotel and Bistro in San Luis Obispo; it puts travelers within easy reach of urban pleasures like great restaurants and shops, the waves of Pismo Beach, all levels of mountain-bike trails, and dozens of wineries.

Hikers heading through a slot canyon near St. George, Utah

Nature lovers enjoy options aplenty in the Big Five national parks—Bryce Canyon, Zion, Arches, Capitol Reef, and Canyonlands. There’s hiking and mountain biking for high-adrenaline agendas and photography and stargazing for those who want something mellow. Yonder Escalante , set within Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument, offers all kinds of accommodation options, from fancy cabins and Airstreams to RV sites. Its clubhouse area is a great place for one person to chill and meet new friends while their partner heads out on the local trails.

Cape Town, South Africa

Two men watching the sunrise in Cape Town

A culture-rich city full of art galleries and restaurants, and proximate to the nation’s famed wine country, it has beaches for relaxing and thrilling adventures such as shark-cage diving and trail running or hiking Lion’s Head . Beach lovers should head to the seaside town of Hout Bay and stay at the wellness-focused Future Found Sanctuary or the oceanfront Tinswalo Atlantic.  Known as the Malibu of Cape Town, Hout Bay is less than 30 minutes from the city center, its protected harbor is perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding, and it’s within easy reach of the trails of Table Mountain and the Constantia wine route.

The Rio Celeste waterfall in Costa Rica's Tenorio Volcano National Park

This country’s natural abundance has long attracted adrenaline junkies and beach-goers alike. Post up on the beach with a michelada and then send your partner to kayak the coast, take surf lessons, or explore the jungle on an all-terrain vehicle. The Gilded Iguana surf hotel in Nosara is an ideal property, with all kinds amenities on-site and plenty of activities in the surrounding area.

If you can’t decide on a single destination, Mark suggests pairing a city with a nearby beach or mountain town. She often recommends combining London with the British countryside, Barcelona with the Pyrenees, or Mexico City with Mérida. Lavery directs clients to Italy’s Dolomites, a region known for its stunning limestone karst peaks and excellent hiking and biking, followed by a few days of R&R by the water in Lake Como.

Pick Accommodations with Activities Nearby

Travel is expensive, and your time is precious. Couples, families, or friends traveling together should do what they want when they want it: that may mean splitting up during the day, opting for activities of various durations, and then reconvening for meals or afternoons to share stories and experiences.

Nothing facilitates this better than the right hotel, hostel, or even campground.

Mark directs clients to properties that provide a wide range of activities and services, so you can spend a full week there without getting bored. This encourages travelers to avoid multiple plane rides, transfers, or a lot of moving around. “To me, the idea of relaxation is in not having to think,” she says. “We are all so decision fatigued that sometimes just the thought of picking a restaurant feels exhausting.”

Couples might opt for accommodations where nothing has to be preplanned, where staff help plan everything on arrival. Tried-and-true stays that please partners with adventure and relaxation include:

Gravity Haus in Breckenridge, Colorado

Tourists hotel and riverside retreat in North Adams, Massachusetts

Blackberry Mountain resort in the Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge on Vancouver Island, Canada

Awasi Atacama in the Atacama Desert, Chile

Kokomo in Fiji

Islas Secas in Panama

Noah Surf House in Torres Vedras, Portugal

Furnas Lake Forest Living in the Azores

Adventure-travel companies have started to roll out itineraries that cater to different fitness levels and interests. In 2020, Backroads launched Dolce Tempo e-biking and walking trips . Couples can hit the day’s adventure at their own pace (made possible thanks to van support), with time to enjoy sightseeing and amazing hotels. Plus, e-bikes are the equalizer for partners who prefer a slower pace than their mate.

DuVine Cycling and Adventure Co. offers Cycle and Sail trips to destinations like Greece and Turkey. A traditional Turkish sailing vessel called a gullet serves as a home base. Travelers can spend a morning cycling together, and while one heads off to tackle challenging climbs in the afternoon, the other can explore coastal villages on foot or return to the ship to snorkel or sunbathe.

Fondo events hosted by Farm to Fork Fitness Adventures include four ride distances, ranging from 10 to 70 miles, so everyone can have a rewarding day on the bike. “We regularly see couples ride different distances from one another, enjoying the opening miles together before splitting off,” says Andrew Herwig, the company’s director of operations. “What’s better than seeing your favorite person waving you in at the finish line with a cold beer?” The company also recently introduced Weekend Getaways that break up each ride with fun stops to engage with local farmers and allow the group to come back together.

Mountain Lodges of Peru designed its Sacred Valley and Lares experiences with travelers of different fitness levels in mind. Each day there are multiple options for activities, such as hikes, cultural excursions like visiting a weaving cooperative, or cooking classes. “You get to spend quality time with your partner, family, or friends for at least half a day, and every night at the lodges share stories over a pisco sour at dinner,” says cofounder Enrique Umbert. “The cool thing about the storytelling dynamic is that, many times, the less active members get inspired to participate in something active during the trip, and active members may discover new experiences, like a ceramics workshop.”

It’s All About Compromise

I’ve yet to find my vacation soulmate, but I have figured out successful planning strategies to ensure I have a great trip with my partner or friends or my mom. I might still tack on a day or two pre or post trip to get my fix of adventure, and I’ll probably get up early to run or surf while my travel buddy sleeps in. But talking through options and expectations has helped pave the way for any time spent together—and compromise helps overachievers like me realize that sometimes the art of doing nothing is exactly what I need to embrace on vacation.
