I Used to Work on a Cruise Ship, and These Are the 13 Things You Should Never Leave Port Without

A former crew member reveals the most important packing essentials.

Kelsey’s writing has appeared in outlets like Condé Nast Traveler, TripSavvy, Edible Magazine, and TimeOut. Some of the most standout experiences in her travels include living in Tokyo, abseiling in Vanuatu, surfing in Costa Rica, and cycling through the Pyrenees mountains.

Travel + Leisure

My first career as a cruise ship entertainer had me sailing all over the world, living and working aboard these large floating resorts for six to eight months at a time. After years of roaming the world’s ports and experiencing every ship and shoreside scenario that you could imagine, I became adept at packing a single suitcase to ensure a comfortable life at sea.

Although living on a ship long-term is different from taking a 10-day cruise, crew and guest cruise packing lists are similar — emphasizing items that make sailing more comfortable and easy. Whether you’re embarking on a world cruise or just escaping to the Caribbean for a quick trip, these essential travel accessories are what my fellow seafarers and I would suggest bringing to make life on the water all the more comfortable. From versatile travel bags to helpful gadgets and genius seasick remedies , here’s what to pack for a cruise like a pro.

Travel Voltage Converter

Most ship staterooms are outfitted with a three-prong 110-volt (North America-grounded) and a 220-volt (Europe) outlet. It’s always a good idea to carry an international adaptor and surge protector to safeguard your devices from electric irregularities. What's more, smaller interior cabins may have only two outlets, which could pose a problem if you and your guest have multiple devices to charge at the same time. Useful for more than just onboard, an internal adaptor is also handy for cruise itineraries that drop you off in multiple countries. Keep this adaptor in your day bag so you can plug it in ashore if your tech needs a charge.

Liquid I.V. Packets

Cruises are vacations, a time to enjoy yourself and indulge. But it’s all too easy to go a tad overboard (ship pun intended) on alcoholic beverages, savory foods, and sunbathing. If you think a hangover is bad, just wait until you have one on a rocky ship at sea. To avoid losing a precious day of your cruise, bring along Liquid I.V. powder, an electrolyte mix that delivers hydration to the bloodstream faster than just water alone. Each bag comes with 16, travel-friendly powder packets and you have your choice between 17 flavors.

Portable First Aid Kit

Visits to the ship’s medical center can be pricey. Avoid this unexpected expense if you can by bringing  your own first aid kit. Start by packing your essential prescription medications. Then,  add bandages and antibiotic ointment for attending to small surface wounds. Bring pain relief medication and cold medicine, just in case. Don’t forget antacids and over-the-counter medicines to ease digestion. Sunscreen and aloe vera gel are must-haves  so you don’t spend your whole cruise hiding from the sun. Bug repellent and after-bite lotion will also ease your sleep if you’ve run into sand fleas at the beach. If you have any allergies, make sure that you have an EpiPen or your chosen allergy medication.

Portable Charger

When I lived on a ship, I would be one of the first ashore and the last back onboard. Exploring new locales is one of the best parts of cruising. If you like to head ashore for the whole day, you’ll want to keep your phone charged so you can navigate your way back to the ship, call for help in case of an emergency, and snap pictures and videos of your destination. Carry a powerful battery bank with you like the Anker Portable Charger so your phone doesn’t die and you’re prepared for long adventures, or fun overnights, in ports of call.

Waterproof Phone Pouch

You’re never far from water on a cruise ship, which means that you’ll want to protect your tech with waterproof gear. Great for island cruise itineraries, this phone bag is watertight and retains touchscreen operations through its polyvinyl shell. It comes with a detachable lanyard should you want to take it into the waves and capture underwater adventures. Even if you’re not going in the water, this pouch will protect your phone from snow and rain, too. Beach-bound cruisers will also find it useful for keeping their phone sand- and salt-free too.

Collapsible Umbrella

Weather on a cruise can be tough to predict, particularly for various ports of call. Even if the forecast is fair, weather can change in an instant particularly if you’re cruising near shoulder seasons. You’ll be grateful to come prepared with an umbrella so you aren’t forced to buy the marked-up ones in port or onboard. Even if there’s no sign of rain, a good umbrella doubles as a sun protectant for harsh midday sun.

Formal Night Attire

Almost every cruise has a formal night where guests are encouraged to dress in elegant wear. This event usually occurs on a sea day at the beginning of your itinerary. Formal nights are fun and evoke the old-world, slow-travel glamor of cruising. Even the officers dress up and don their formal ship whites. When everyone onboard participates in the formal night dress code,  it makes the event all the more special and luxurious, so remember to bring a few upscale resort looks onboard. This stunning Tadashi Shoji Off-Shoulder A-Line Crepe and Taffeta Gown will do the trick, but if you’re shopping on a budget, there are plenty of swanky cocktail dress options at Amazon; start your search with the Anrabess Pleated Maxi Dress or PrettyGarden One-Shoulder Slit Maxi Dress — starting at $43.

Sand-Free Beach Towel

Most cruise guests bring the ship’s pool towels shoreside for lounging. But, the terry cloth towels cling to the sand, bringing it back in your bag to be dumped on your stateroom floor. If you want a tidier beach trip, bring along a sand-free beach blanket like this Turkish Beach Towel. It's made with cotton and folds up slim so it won’t take up too much space in your suitcase. What's more, it dries quickly to prevent your bag and its contents from getting soggy.

Packing Cubes

When I reached out to a crew member friend to discuss packing tips, his first thought was emphatically packing cubes. Organization is key to enjoying your cruise, particularly on the day that you embark as it’s the most hectic day for all staff onboard. By the time that you’re able to check into your room, it’s almost time to sail away, and you’ll probably want to be on deck with a daiquiri and sweet treat in hand, not organizing your wardrobe — which is why I recommend traveling with packing cubes. They're not only great for condensing your suitcase contents but also keeping them organized and easy-to-spot, so you can spend less time searching for the things you need and make unpacking and getting ready a breeze.

Collapsible Duffel Bag

One of the perks of cruise ship travel is that, unlike airlines,  most cruise lines don’t have strict luggage policies. For travelers who like to shop or collect souvenirs, this is a huge perk. On itineraries with excellent shopping, cruising can be a great way to source neat gifts. Onboard shopping is also a fun way to pick up items to remember your trip. If you’re worried that you won’t have room in your case for your purchases, bring a collapsible duffel bag like this handy 40-liter version from REI for your treasures. Amazon reviewers also love the Gonex Foldable Travel Duffle Bag and the Vomgomfom Travel Duffle Bag for the same reason.

Reusable Collapsible Bag

If you’re cruising around islands, you can make this collapsible tote bag your designated beach bag. Its nylon fabric makes it easy to brush off sand and it dries quickly should you need to wash it (or accidentally get it wet while you're at the beach). If you’re cruising around Europe, you’ll quickly learn that single-use plastic bags are often banned. Many markets, shops, and stores expect everyone to come with their own bag to take away their products. This reusable bag folds to a pocket-size when you’re not using it, so you can keep it in your purse or backpack until you need it.

If you’re a light sleeper, the noises of a ship may come as a shock. Whether it’s the sounds of the anchor dropping at 5 a.m. or your raucous neighbors enjoying late-night revelry, earplugs will help you get restful sleep at sea — no matter the time of day. Make sure you pick up this on-sale pack of 60 at Amazon; they're made with soft foam for a comfortable and adjustable fit and deliver impressive noise-canceling capabilities.

Non-Drowsy Seasick Patches

If your itinerary is taking you through rough waters, like the Drake Passage or the Tasmanian Sea, be prepared with remedies to fight motion sickness. More than 11,500 reviewers swear by these seasick patches that use a holistic herbal blend to fight nausea. The onboard medical center offers Dramamine to seasick guests, which will make you sleepy and groggy. If you want to stay alert while fighting the nausea, these non-drowsy patches are the way to go. A few crew tips for fighting sea stomach: stay on the upper levels of the ship, munch on green apples, and keep your eyes on the horizon.

7 Gifts Cruise Crew Members Really Want & Need

gifts for cruise members

Sharing is caring!

It’s not uncommon for cruise passengers to want to acknowledge the hard work of cruise ship crew members and show appreciation. In fact, in many facebook groups and message boards, gifts for cruise ship crew members is a hot topic of discussion.

Some people wonder if there are items cruise workers need and find difficult to get these days, and others like the idea of giving something that will make their lives better.

On a recent cruise, I had an interesting conversation with a crew member, that opened my eyes to what can really make a difference for cabin stewards, waiters and other cruise ship workers.

In this post I share 7 gifts cruise crew members really appreciate.

Gifts for Cruise Crew Members that Are Most Appreciated

Tips & cash.

cruise crew bags

Yes, cash is king. This might be obvious, but the best “gift” you can give your cruise cabin steward, waiters and even your favorite bartender, is a nice tip.

Even if you auto or prepay your gratuities on a cruise, giving extra cash above and beyond the cruise ship gratuity is very much appreciated by cruise ship staff.

Crew members often send money home to their families. Money can also be used to purchase any items that they need, including wifi or SIM cards, so cash is very useful.

Edible Gifts (Chocolates & Candies)

cruise crew bags

Crew member cabins are usually very small. Therefore there isn’t a lot of space to keep items you may bring onboard as a gift. However, cruise ship crew can enjoy and share any edible gifts like chocolates and other treats.

If you know the crew member, you may have an idea of his or her preferences. For example, does he or she like salty snacks like chips or Doritos?

In most cases you won’t really know, but bringing a box of chocolates or local treats from home is a nice gesture.

Toiletries & Convenience Items

cruise crew bags

For some time after the cruise restart, many cruise ship crew members weren’t able to get off the cruise ship when in port. This meant getting convenience items and toiletries was a challenge.

For this reason, some cruise passengers brought basic items and toiletries like shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste and moisturizer to cruise ship staff. Through the grapevine, I’ve heard more recently, that crew aren’t as much in need of these items anymore as they can either get off the ship or order things to the cruise ship that are delivered.

If you feel it’s appropriate, you can always ask a crew member if you can pick them up anything while in port of call.

Positive Comments

Cruise Tip: take photo of crew member nametag

While tangible gifts like tips and chocolates are nice, something that can make a huge difference for cruise crew members is leaving positive comments on surveys and comment cards.

When cruise ship staff get positive comments and feedback, this goes a long way towards their career with the cruise line. Good ratings can mean promotions onboard and even rewards and privileges onboard their cruise ship.

When you get off the cruise ship after disembarkation, you’ll be sent an online survey to review your cruise experience. Make sure to fill it out and use this this as an opportunity to highlight any cruise ship staff that made a positive impact on your cruise vacation .

A Handwritten Note

Thank you note

Over the years, writing a personalized thank you note is not very common. So, when you take the time to write a handwritten note to a crew member, this can be more meaningful than you think.

As a crew member mentioned to me recently, many cruise ship staff are away from home for several months and it can be very lonely. Those passengers who have personal interactions, even if brief, are meaningful and have an impact.

A handwritten note, usually accompanying a tip, is very appreciated.

cruise crew bags

Kindness costs nothing but makes the life of cruise ship crew more enjoyable. Working on a cruise ship isn’t easy. Even if they enjoy their work, which many do, there are times when it’s likely tough.

Saying please and thank you, and showing appreciation is nice. Remembering their names, asking how they are doing or about their families or life back home, is a good way to learn more about them too.

Let’s face it, positive interactions with guests, probably help to make up for the times that cruise passengers have complaints .

Ease Their Workload

cruise crew bags

Cruise ship cabin attendants, waiters and other staff work really hard, often for many hours a day. Try not to give them extra work by not leaving your stateroom an absolute mess.

Even at a restaurant or in the main dining room, try as much as possible to be respectful and not create extra work.

There is no obligation to give a gift to cruise ship crew members. However if you are wondering, giving tips or gratuities, being kind, and filling out the post-cruise survey are 3 things that are very much appreciated by cruise ship staff.

Oh no! Thanks for sharing your story Maria

I love your videos and information for cruising. What do you consider to be an appropriate gratuity for the cabin steward especially if he went above and beyond the normal service?

This is a great question. That said it’s very personal & there’s no right or wrong answer. In some of my videos about this topic, many cruisers will share their own experience in the comments of what they gave as an additional tip.

Cruise Ship Crew Travel Procedure Luggage Manual

cruise crew bags

The Cruise Company is NOT responsible for expenses incurred as a result of lost,  damaged or excess baggage (Extra, overweight, oversized baggage fee)  while joining / leaving Company vessels.

TRAVEL TIPS:

Below are some general tips when preparing to travel:

1. Be sure to attach a luggage tag to each baggage that will be checked in at theairport. It is recommended that luggage tags be attached to all carry-on items in case these items are left in the airplane overhead bin.

2. Inside each bag, place a copy of your itinerary (i.e. flight details, hotel details, joining letter) along with contact information.

3. Be sure to remove any old airline tags that were placed on your baggage from previous trips.

4. As so many bags look alike, it is recommended that crew attach something (i.e. stickers or labels) to their baggage that is easy to distinguish and identify at a glance.

5. It is recommended that you bring a small amount of clothing items in your carry-on. If your baggage gets lost, you will have some clothes to change into.

6. Make a note of what type of bags (color, type, and manufacturer) and any distinguishing characteristics. Having this information will be helpful should you have to report lost baggage.

BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE POLICY:

Please consult the individual airline's baggage policy prior to travel as airlines are constantly changing their respective Checked & Carry-on Baggage policy. In the event an airline charges a checked baggage fee (not an excess baggage fee) or a fee for a 2nd baggage to be checked in, please retain your receipt(s) in order to submit a claim for reimbursement.

NOTE : Claims for reimbursement for 3 or more checked baggage or for excess baggage fees will not be considered unless otherwise stipulated in the crew member's employment agreement. (Check your employment contract agreement )

Please refer to Section 63.02.01 TRAVEL INCIDENT AND CLAIMS PROCEDURES:

Checked Baggage:

Piece Concept Policy: When travelling to/from the U.S. or Canada, each piece of luggage should not exceed a linear dimension (length+width+height) of 62" and a weight of 50 lbs/23 kg. Maximum 2 bags allowed.

Weight concept Policy: This system is used in all areas except where the "piece" concept is used. Each piece should not exceed a linear dimension (length+width+height) of 62" and a weight of 44 lbs/20 kg. Maximum 2 pieces allowed only.

Carry-on Baggage:

When travelling to/from the U.S. or Canada, most carriers allow one carry-on item.

* 1 purse, briefcase, or camera bag

* or 1 laptop computer (computers cannot be checked and must be carried on);

* or 1 item of a similar or smaller size to those listed above

Size Restrictions:

To avoid delays as well as fees, follow these general size requirements:

* Baggage may not exceed 45 linear inches (or 115 cm) in combined length, width, and height

* Baggage must fit easily in the Carry-on Baggage Check, which is located near the check-in counters and at the gate, and is approximately 22" x 14" x 9" or 56 x 36 x 23 centimeters.

EXCESS BAGGAGE POLICIES

Crew and Officers may be subject to an excess baggage fee if maximum baggage allowance is exceeded. Unless otherwise stipulated in the crew member's employment agreement, the Company is not responsible for excess baggage fees when joining/leaving a vessel.

Please contact the airline directly or visit their website to review their current Excess Baggage Policy.

Music Managers and Musicians:

Music Managers and Musicians who incur excess baggage fees for their equipment may submit a claim by sending a completed claim form and original receipts directly to the Manager of Air Services.

LOST BAGGAGE:

If a crew member or Officer finds that his/her baggage did not arrive, they should do the following:

1. Go to the Airline's Baggage Claim Office located at the airport and file a report.provide contact details(i.e. cell phone number and/or email address), as well as a detailed description of your baggage.

2. Make sure the representative processing your claim provides you with a phone number as well as a Baggage Claim tracking number before leaving the airport in order to follow up on the status of your claim.

3. If joining a vessel, please notify the Port Agent so they can assist in tracking the status of your claim and advise them that they may send an e-mail notification to the Crew SAP/ Crew Manager of the vessel if baggage is located after sailing. The Port Agent will assist in forwarding the baggage to the next suitable port. Princess Cruises agrees to cover the Port Agent fees and shipping fees to have the luggage forwarded to the next port (these fees range from $40 to several hundred dollars depending on the distance involved.)

4. Once onboard a vessel, crew member must contact the Crew SAP / Crew Manager to inform them of the missing luggage, and provide the Crew Office with the claim information from the airline. Crew members should also provide the Crew SAP / Crew Manager an itemized list of belongings in each missing luggage piece and the approximate value.

5. Crew members will be issued a complimentary toiletry kit and will receive complimentary laundry services for five days or until luggage is delivered to the ship, whichever occurs first.

6. If luggage has not been recovered by the 3rd day, shipboard management may authorize a $50 voucher from crew Club funds to be given to the crew member for the purchased if incidentals. It is the responsibility of the HR Manager / Crew Club Treasurer to track all lost luggage costs.

7. In the event the luggage is not recovered, the crew member is encouraged to make a claim to the airline for lost luggage. Claims may take several weeks to be resolved; therefore it is at the discretion of shipboard management to issue an additional voucher for up to 200.00 USD from the Crew Club fund. These funds should be reimbursed by the crew member once the lost luggage claim is resolved.

8. Costs for lost luggage are to be tracked and may be submitted at the end of the year to Fleet Personnel, Employee Relations Manager. Consideration will be given to reimbursing the Crew Club from monies available. Costs will only be reimbursed to the shipboard Crew Club fund to the level of allotted funds available within the Crew Welfare budget. Any funds available in the budget will be distributed equitably amongst the fleet.

Cruise ship worker says there are six things you should never do while on one

Cruise ship worker says there are six things you should never do while on one

Listen to those who spend much more time on them than you.

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

A cruise ship worker has explained exactly what you should never do when setting sail - and some of the pointers might shock you.

The summer season is almost upon us and with that, a boom in travel as millions head on their annual breaks abroad.

And for many Brits , Spain is the go to destination with recent guidance giving the 16 million UK residents heading there a sigh of relief .

But some fancy something a little different, with the likes of cruise ship excursions extremely popular if you can afford them .

With one cruise ship staff member recently explaining why you should 'get ready to spend a lot of cash' on one thing in particular , another in the industry is here with six things she says you should never do if you're getting ready to set sail on any boat.

Tammy Barr has been sailing around the world , working on cruise ships, for years on end before now doing it as a customer.

Originally shared with Business Insider, here are six things she says she would never do following her experience as a cruise ship worker and now customer.

A big no-no to the drinks package

For many, this is the big question before setting sail across the world. But for Tammy, you shouldn't pay if your drinking habits aren't on the overindulgent side of things.

"I enjoy a pina colada by the pool or a Manhattan while listening to a jazz set after dinner," she says.

"Even so, it doesn't make sense for me to pay in advance for 12 to 15 cocktails a day."

Who doesn't love a cocktail (Getty Stock Images)

For Tammy, the math doesn't add up especially if the trip you're on will see you leaving the ship for multiple port-heavy trips. Going ashore means less time on the ship to drink its booze.

"I prefer to buy as I go and take advantage of happy hour and other drink specials that are available on certain cruise lines. I also check the beverage policy in advance and bring on my own wine, if allowed," she says.

Touching surfaces

It's time to utilise those elbows and knuckles with Tammy never using her fingers to touch stuff in the public areas such as elevator buttons.

"Some cruise lines are better than others at wiping down commonly touched surfaces, but I don't take any chances," she says.

"I avoid touching things others frequently touch, and I wash my hands frequently."

Illnesses such as norovirus can quickly spread on cruise ships, given there are thousands of people in a confined space, so taking this little measure could be the different between holiday bliss and holiday bliss.

A cruise ship in port (Getty Stock Images)

Upgrading your food

Most cruise liners will include the main dining room meals in your package, which is one part of why the price is so much, given you're essentially paying for perks like this in advance.

But if you want something fancy, expect to pay more on top.

Tammy says that, while ' $12 may not seem like much for a steak of lobster tail', it defeats the point. She will stick to what she's got.

Calling the ship by the wrong name

A quirky one from Tammy, but one that comes down to looking the part when you're on board.

She says: "Ships have proper names, and so do not require a definite article. For example - 'Tomorrow I am embarking on Discovery Princess' or 'I enjoyed scenic cruising on MS Westerdam'."

Basically if you want to look savvy and knowledge, drop the 'the' before the ship name. It's just not correct.

Cruise ships at port (Getty Stock Images)

Room key does not go around your neck

Tammy thinks this is a bit naff for a few reasons. For one, it can be seen as flaunting your status by showing off how often you cruise.

No one likes a show off really and the longer you are at sea, the fancier your room key.

It's also an invitation to those who have sinister means. She says: "In port, that room key bouncing off your chest looks like an invitation to be robbed. It screams 'I have money! Come and take it from me'."

Virgin Voyages cruise ship in Sydney (Matt Blyth/Getty Images)

There's no need for super busy port day

The idea of missing your cruise ship's departure and being stranded somewhere on the other side of the world is mortifying.

For Tammy, the best way to avoid this is to have pretty chilled port days so you're never at serious risk of missing your cruise ship before it leaves port.

"I've never missed a sail away, but I have cut it too close at times and have had to run down a pier or two. Just recently, as a passenger, my taxi driver got lost returning our group to the port at night," she says.

"When I realised how late we were going to be, I forked over $8 per minute to be connected with the ship. I pleaded with them to wait for us. It was a sprint through the port to get back on and we received quite a scolding from the first officer."

Nearly 200 people sick in norovirus outbreaks on Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises ships

cruise crew bags

Nearly 200 people got sick in norovirus outbreaks on Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International ships.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 94 of the 2,532 guests on Sapphire Princess reported being ill during its April 5 cruise, along with 20 crew members. The round-trip cruise, which left from Los Angeles with stops in Hawaii and the South Pacific, will end on May 7, according to CruiseMapper .

On Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas, 67 of its 1,993 guests reported being ill in addition to two crew members during a cruise that ended April 22, according to the CDC . The two-week voyage sailed from Tampa, Florida to Los Angeles with stops in countries like Colombia and Panama, according to CruiseMapper .

In both outbreaks, the guests and crew members’ main symptoms were diarrhea and vomiting.

Princess, Royal Caribbean and the ships’ crews implemented heightened cleaning and disinfection measures and isolated those who were sick, among other steps, the health agency said.

"Onboard the most current sailing of Sapphire Princess, there have been a small number of cases of mild gastrointestinal illness among passengers, the cause likely is the common but contagious virus called Norovirus," a Princess spokesperson told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. "At the first sign of an increase in the numbers of passengers reporting to the medical center with gastrointestinal illness, we immediately initiated additional enhanced sanitization procedures to interrupt the person-to-person spread of this virus. Our sanitization program, developed in coordination with the CDC, includes disinfection measures, isolation of ill passengers and communication to passengers about steps they can take to stay well while onboard."

Royal Caribbean did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The CDC has logged six outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships that met its threshold for public notification since the beginning of the year. Norovirus was listed as the causative agent in five, while one was unknown.

The illness is often associated with cruise ships but outbreaks occur in communities on land as well, according to Dr. Sarah E. Hochman, a hospital epidemiologist and the section chief of infectious diseases at NYU Langone Health’s Tisch Hospital.

“There's not something special or unique about cruise ships,” she said. “It's really any type of congregate setting, but it's also happening out in the community on a much smaller scale among households and household contacts. It just doesn't come to the attention of public health as much as it does for larger congregate settings.”

Hochman said the virus is “incredibly infectious” and congregate settings tend to have many shared surfaces, such as handrails in cruise ship stairwells or elevators. “And so, if you just have one person who's shedding the virus and touches the surface and then someone else touches it and then touches their mouth, that's how it can spread in those types of settings.”

Cruise ship medical facilities: What happens if you get sick or injured (or bitten by a monkey)

Alcohol-based hand sanitizer isn't as effective against norovirus, and Hochman emphasized that washing hands with soap and water “will do a lot to prevent the spread.”

The news comes after more than two dozen Silversea Cruises guests got sick in a gastrointestinal illness outbreak on the luxury line’s Silver Nova ship during a sailing that began in late March.

L.A. gangsters used painter suits, assault rifles and zip ties for brazen armored car heists

A Brinks truck

The driver had stepped out of the Brinks truck to make a cash delivery at a Taco Bell when he saw the gun.

The man holding the AR-15 wore a white painter suit. He fumbled for the driver’s keys and handed them to a similarly dressed accomplice, who climbed inside the armored car. A minute ticked by. The driver stared down the muzzle of the rifle. Then a shout from the truck: “Hey, let’s go!”

Police found the getaway car abandoned half a mile away. The cash and the suspects were gone.

The heist last June in Reseda was the work of a crew that targeted armored cars in a series of sophisticated robberies across Los Angeles County that netted six-figure hauls, authorities say. After casing their targets and studying routines for weeks, the crew waylaid drivers as they picked up or delivered bulk cash at banks, credit unions, markets, fast-food restaurants and a check-cashing business, according to a search warrant affidavit reviewed by The Times.

The crew was composed of ex-convicts from the West Boulevard Crips, East Coast Crips and Black P Stone gangs, some of whom had met while serving time in state prison, according to court records.

Thieves recently managed to carry off a staggering $30 million from a cash storage facility in Sylmar and loot millions of dollars in jewelry from an idling Brinks truck without firing a shot — heists that have confounded investigators and made fodder for headlines around the world. But meanwhile, a very different operation — brazen and lightning-quick robberies committed in broad daylight — played out on the streets of L.A., with all the twists and turns of a Hollywood thriller.

LOS ANGELES, CA- APRIL 04: Thieves made off with as much as $30 million in an Easter Sunday burglary from the Gardaworld building on Rexford Street in Sylmar. Published news reports said they entered through the roof. Photographed on Thursday, April 4, 2024. (Myung J. Chun / Los Angeles Times)

Police responded to alarm around time of $30-million L.A. heist, but thieves were undetected

Los Angeles police responded to three separate alarms at GardaWorld’s Sylmar facility on the day criminals stole as much as $30 million from the vault there.

April 19, 2024

The case took authorities from a darkened oil field in Baldwin Hills to a predawn standoff in the San Fernando Valley, where one member of the crew refused to go quietly.

But for another suspect, the police were too late. They found his body on the side of a road with a bullet in his head.

A ski mask, an AR-15 and bags of cash

The crew first struck in February 2022. An armored car driver was picking up cash from a Wescom Credit Union in Hawthorne when three men approached him, FBI Special Agent Elizabeth Cardenas wrote in an affidavit.

One wore a ski mask and a yellow security guard shirt. He forced the driver to the ground at rifle-point.

With the muzzle of the rifle pressed into the driver’s head, two others grabbed bags of cash and checks. They fled in a white Honda Accord with $166,640, according to one of the suspect’splea agreement.

Over the next year, the crew held up armored car drivers outside a Bank of America branch in Inglewood, a 99 Cents Only Store on Crenshaw Boulevard and a check-cashing business at the intersection of La Brea Avenue and Adams Boulevard, according to Cardenas’ affidavit.

Suspect wanted for a series of armored car robberies.

A Brinks driver was making a delivery at PLS Check Cashers when he noticed a green laser sight being pointed at him, the agent wrote. Three masked men approached, one holding what the driver described as a “submachine gun.”

Their orders were confusing, the driver said. They told him to lie down, then stand up, then get on his knees. After seizing his keys and gun, the suspects took bags of money from the truck, Cardenas wrote. The haul totaled $374,168.

Authorities identified two half-brothers, James Russell Davis and Deneyvous Hobson, as suspects. Three weeks before the first job in Hawthorne, an employee at the credit union had called the police to report something suspicious: a white Chevrolet Tahoe circling the branch for an hour. Its occupants seemed to be photographing a delivery of cash from an armored car.

Officers pulled over the Tahoe and questioned Davis and Hobson, who showed identification that listed an address in the West Adams neighborhood. When detectives and agents searched the Chesapeake Avenue house in October 2022, they seized a surveillance system that showed getaway cars used in the heists had been parked outside the home, Cardenas wrote.

James Russel Davis

Davis is a member of the West Boulevard Crips, according to a search warrant affidavit, while Hobson is from the Black P Stones. Questioned during a traffic stop by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies, Hobson disavowed his gang ties.

“I went all the way legit, man, all the way legit,” he said, according to a transcript of the conversation.

Hobson was arrested in February 2023. Davis was captured a month later after the FBI went public with a manhunt and a $25,000 reward. Neither man’s lawyer returned requests for comment.

Davis pleaded guilty in February to robbery and gun charges, admitting he cased the Wescom Credit Union and acted as a lookout. He faces a minimum of 10 years when he is sentenced in June. Hobson has pleaded not guilty and is set to stand trial in September.

But even as the half-brothers sat in a federal detention center, the heists continued.

Gone in 20 seconds

The morning of June 10, 2023, a Brinks armored car pulled into the parking lot of a 7-Eleven at the intersection of Florence Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard. One of the drivers stayed in the truck while the other went inside to make a pickup.

As he returned with the money, a man wearing a white jumpsuit stepped out of a white Lexus SUV holding a rifle, Det. Emily Delph of the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division wrote in a search warrant affidavit.

He shoved the driver to the ground and took the bag of cash while a second suspect trained a rifle on the driver inside the truck. “Let’s go!” the driver of the Lexus shouted. “Hurry up!”

The Lexus, which was registered to an Arkansas limited liability company, was found abandoned in a nearby alley. It’s unclear how much cash was taken during the robbery, which lasted just 20 seconds, according to Delph’s affidavit.

A ‘cold-blooded killer’ called Smiley haunted L.A. for 14 years. How he finally faced justice

Jose Luis Saenz spent 14 years on the run after he was linked to a string of brazen murders. Authorities eventually tracked him down in Mexico — but not before he popped back up on the doorstep of a man who’d lost half a million in drug money.

April 18, 2024

Seventeen days later, the crew held up the Brinks driver at the Taco Bell on Reseda Boulevard. Police found the getaway car parked half a mile away on a residential street. The silver Toyota CHR had been reported stolen at 12:35 a.m. that morning in West Adams, Delph wrote.

In the final heist linked to the crew, a Brinks driver was robbed while filling ATMs in South Los Angeles the morning of Oct. 16.

“Based off of the manner in which the robberies occurred, the similarities of the weapons used and the attire that the suspects wear, I believe the above-listed robberies are connected,” Delph wrote.

Combing through Hobson‘s and Davis’ phone records, detectives found they’d been communicating during the robberies with a number used by Jadie Lee Young Jr., a 30-year-old member of the West Boulevard Crips who’d served 12 years in prison for assault, Delph wrote.

Young was arrested on suspicion of possessing a gun as a felon in June 2023. Inside his truck, police found more than $10,000 in cash packaged “similar to the manner in which Brinks bundles their money,” Delph wrote. Young told the officers he’d recently bought the truck and moved into a new apartment in Windsor Hills.

Detectives got a warrant for Young’s phone records. They showed he was near the 7-Eleven during the robbery and in the area of the Taco Bell two weeks before the heist, which indicated he was casing the location, Delph wrote.

But before the LAPD could arrest Young, another police agency found him first.

A leap as cops come calling

Young lay on the side of Fairfax Avenue, among the nodding derricks of the Inglewood oil field. Sheriff’s deputies found the body at 4 a.m. on Dec. 20.

Det. Ray Lugo of the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau said Young was believed to have been shot in the head in the LAPD’s jurisdiction before his body was dumped in the hills outside the city.

His death is being investigated by the LAPD, Lugo said. Delph declined to comment on Young’s homicide.

Thief who finagled luxury hotel room keys admits to brazen diamond necklace heist

A man accused of talking his way past the front desks of posh Beverly Hills hotels and walking off with millions of dollars in jewelry admitted Tuesday that he stole a guest’s diamond necklace valued at $395,000.

April 2, 2024

In her affidavit, the detective said she learned Young was communicating during the 7-Eleven and Taco Bell robberies with a number subscribed to Zeff Rocco, an East Coast Crip who’d done prison time for carjacking.

On Rocco’s iCloud account, detectives found photographs of guns resembling those used in the robberies, Delph wrote. Rocco also shared a photograph of bundles of cash the day of the Taco Bell heist, according to Delph’s affidavit.

At 5 a.m. on March 21, a SWAT team assembled in the stairwell of a Reseda Boulevard apartment building. “Zeff Roco, this is the LAPD!” an officer shouted into a bullhorn, according to body camera footage released last week. “Come out with your hands up and surrender immediately!”

cruise crew bags

An officer managed to reach Rocco on the phone. “We’ve been waiting and our patience is growing thin,” he said, “so I need you to surrender and come out.”

Rocco hung up. Surveillance cameras captured him clambering over the balcony of his third-floor apartment, wearing only shorts and sneakers and carrying an assault rifle. He jumped down to a grass dog run and fumbled for the rifle.

“He’s got a gun!” an officer yelled before opening fire. “Don’t reach for it! Don’t reach for it! Let it go!”

The officer fired again. “Let it go! Stop reaching for it!” Four more shots boomed out.

Inside the dead man’s apartment, police found high-capacity magazines and body armor, an LAPD spokeswoman said.

That same morning, detectives arrested Disaac Jones, 33, whose DNA was found on a glove left inside the getaway car used in the 7-Eleven heist, according to Delph’s affidavit.

Jones was released on $150,000 bond after pleading not guilty to two counts of robbery. He declined to comment.

Emirates told cabin crew to report for duty during historic Dubai flood despite government's stay-at-home warning, report says

  • A historic flood brought the most rain in 75 years to the United Arab Emirates.
  • Over 800 flights have been canceled at Dubai International Airport since Tuesday.
  • Despite a stay-at-home warning, Emirates has reportedly encouraged cabin crew to report for duty.

Insider Today

Emirates flight attendants in Dubai were told to still report for duty while a flood left much of the city's airport underwater.

A memo sent to the airline's cabin crew was obtained by the " A Fly Guy's Cabin Crew Lounge ," a Facebook page where aviation industry staff share gossip and stories.

It encouraged staff to make their way to the airport despite the government telling people to stay at home.

"We are operating our flights safely, and it's important our operations carry on for the sake of our customers," the email reportedly read.

It added: "If you are rostered for duty, please continue to make your way safely to work."

Aviation news site Paddle Your Own Kanoo first reported the memo as posted on Facebook.
