The Art of the Cruise: Q&A with Park West Gallery

Interview with Park West Gallery

Wondering what a cruise ship art auction is all about? First: it’s exhilarating, exciting and educational, even if you don't know a thing about art. Second: it’s about learning to appreciate the finer things in life, which can include surprisingly affordable art - the ultimate of all vacation souvenirs! Imagine hanging a Thomas Kinkade in your living room or a colorful Peter Max at your office. Wow, what a great cruise memory you’ll be able to enjoy every day! Third: Did I mention there’s free champagne?

You don't have to be an art aficionado to buy what you love. Some of the Park West Gallery artists that have captivated me over the years include French painter Jean Claude Picot and Salvador Dali's Divine Comedy series, as well as artists Tomasz Rut from Poland and Shari Erickson of Atlanta.

Let’s learn more about the art of the cruise! Here’s my Q&A with Stoney Goldstein , Vice President of Sales for the land-based Park West Gallery of Southfield, Michigan. Since 1969, Park West has had the pleasure of helping over 2 million clients start a love affair with collecting art. They ship about 6,000 artworks to their clients every single week and proudly offer auctions on every ship in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet, including the new Norwegian Bliss .

I don't know anything about art and I've never attended an onboard auction before. What's your advice?

The wonderful thing about art is that you don’t need to know anything to enjoy it. The best advice we can give is, “Follow your eye.” You will know when a certain work of art connects with you—you’ll just feel it. And, once an artwork catches your eye, don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Besides the art auctions, do you offer any other events onboard?

We're always very excited about our shipboard programming. These aren't just art shows-they're events! On a seven-day Norwegian Cruise Line itinerary, we will usually offer around three unique auctions, each with a different theme and featured artwork. You can come, have a glass of champagne on us, and watch the auctioneer go. If you've never attended a live auction before, it's quite an experience. Everyone who attends receives a small promotional artwork and then we do raffles for larger works throughout the auction.

But we don't just do auctions. Throughout a weeklong cruise, we also usually hold three to five different art seminars, receptions, or exhibitions. Our art experts might take you through 30,000 years of art history in 30 minutes or they might host a "night at the museum" evening art gala. Our goal is to make art engaging and fun for everyone.

I’ve heard that art is expensive.

We pride ourselves on carrying artwork that will fit every budget. If you just want one small painting for your living room or if you're completely redoing your corporate offices, we have an incredible variety of artwork available.

In fact, we recently rolled out an all-new e-gallery to all of our onboard galleries. If you can't find exactly what you're looking for on the ship, one of our personal art consultants can help you browse over 2,300 works in our digital galleries. We even have a tool that will allow you to try out different frames on each work in our e-gallery, so you can know exactly what it will look like when you get it home.

What art mediums will passengers see onboard Norwegian Cruise Line ships? Are there any new techniques?

Park West offers a huge variety of artistic mediums—unique paintings of all kinds, watercolors, etchings, graphic works, lithographs, sculptures—the list goes on and on.

Our artists are constantly experimenting with new and exciting mediums. We have two new mediums, in particular, that our artists and collectors absolutely love. One is called dye sublimation, where the artist uses an advanced technique to transfer their image onto glass, metal, or plastic surfaces. That's related to our other new medium, the caldograph, where the artist bonds their image onto a wooden panel-it's a modern twist on a classic medium. ("The Mona Lisa" was actually painted onto a wood panel!)

Are some art mediums more popular than others?

Our clients love variety, so it's hard to say if one medium or size is more popular than another. We sell art of all shapes and sizes. On Norwegian Cruise Line, we definitely see a lot of interest in artwork from Peter Max, Lebo, and Guy Harvey, which makes sense because all three have painted the hulls of Norwegian ships. It's no surprise, after seeing a work of art that big, that a cruiser might want to take a piece of that home with them.

For more information, read: A Closer Look at the Hull Art on Norwegian Cruise Line Ships .

I need an insider tip: what are your favorite up-and-coming artists you can get enough of?

Park West is always adding to our family of artists. Recently, we’ve fallen in love with the work of Matt Beyrer , who creates these breathtaking paintings on wood that really incorporate the grain of the materials he’s working with. In terms of up-and-coming names, we also adore Orlando Quevedo , a gifted magic realist from Cuba, and Alexandre Renoir , a brilliant landscape artist who is actually the great-grandson of the famous Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Why should I buy art onboard when I can buy it on land?

At Park West, we're big believers that art should be for everyone. One way we put that into practice is by holding our art auctions on cruise ships. We don't expect you to come to us-we're going to bring the art to you. While you're having the vacation of a lifetime, we want to make sure that you have access to some of the most beautiful art in the world. You can browse, you can learn more, or maybe you bring home something to brighten your kitchen or office. If you leave your cruise with a new passion for art, our mission is accomplished.

There seem to be some misconceptions about onboard art auctions, can you clarify?

A lot of people only know art auctions from movies, where they seem stuffy, snobby, and expensive. In reality, our auctions are the exact opposite. We want to welcome you. Come browse with us, have a drink with us, see the show, and ask us a million questions. We love it. And, with our 40/40/40 guarantee-where you can return any artwork for 40 days or exchange any artwork for 40 months-you don't have to worry about post-vacation buyer's remorse either.

Where can cruisers find out more about the artists Park West Gallery represents?

The best source of information is parkwestgallery.com . We have full biographies of all of our artists, galleries of their works, and feature articles and interviews where you can learn even more about them.

Does Park West Gallery offer physical land-based galleries?

Yes. Park West has a beautiful gallery in our hometown of Southfield, Michigan, which is also connected to the Park West Museum, a free-to-the-public museum where we display our private collections of old and modern masters like Picasso, Renoir, Rembrandt, and more. In addition to our home gallery, every year, Park West holds several traveling land events in vacation destinations all over the world. These are often made available to our VIP collectors and they can involve excursions, fine dining, auctions, and opportunities to meet some of your favorite artists.

Park West Gallery Expands Across the Seas in 2022 with New Cruise Partnerships

After a long delay, cruise ships emerged back onto the high seas in 2021, and cruisers definitely came back in earnest!

The passengers were not only excited for the entertainment, food, and scenery, but also for the return of Park West Gallery’s popular art auctions at sea. With 2022 just around the corner, let’s take a look at what’s sure to be one of the busiest and best years ever for cruising and three fabulous new ships taking to the water—all of which will be featuring Park West’s incredible onboard galleries and arts programming. (These won’t be the only ones!)

Expanded Partnerships at Sea

2022 will be a banner year for cruising, in part because we will see Park West Gallery art onboard three brand new ships! “We look forward to further expanding our partnerships by opening new galleries and hosting art auctions and events onboard the Royal Caribbean Wonder of the Seas, Discovery Princess, and Celebrity Beyond,” said Park West Executive Vice President John Block. “We expect 2022 to be a memorable year for cruising as new ships are added to fleets and former ships are getting back into service post-pandemic. We couldn’t be happier to get our art auctioneers , gallery directors, and staff back on board!”

Cruising and Park West have fit together like a hand in a glove for decades. In fact, can you believe it’s been almost a decade since artist Peter Max’s artwork debuted on the Norwegian Breakaway , covering approximately 40,000 square feet of the ship’s hull?

Royal Caribbean Wonder of the Seas

When Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas begins to explore Caribbean ports in March 2022, it will become the largest cruise ship in the world, a crown once worn by Oasis-class sister ship Symphony of the Seas . This glorious new vessel will delight guests with Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings from Fort Lauderdale, carrying them to the rainforests of Roatán, Honduras, the cenotes near Cozumel, Mexico, and the French and Dutch paradise of St. Maarten. Guests can even spend a day frolicking on Royal Caribbean’s picture-perfect private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. And then, in May of 2022, the all-new Wonder of the Seas sets sail for European culture capitals Barcelona and Rome , transporting passengers to Provence in the peak of lavender season, and then to legendary Italian cities like Florence and Naples.

While on board the Wonder of the Seas, you will love discovering its eight unique neighborhoods, including the all-new Suite Neighborhood’s pool deck. Of course the visual and culinary arts will be on display too, with AquaTheater delivering live acrobatic and musical entertainment outdoors with extraordinary ocean views and Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine pushing the boundaries of culinary art, much like how Park West artists continue to showcase the enduring power of visual art.

Park West will bring you an unparalleled arts program during your Royal Caribbean vacation at sea. Join us for a toast at our onboard events, peruse the ship’s impressive art gallery, and find the artwork that speaks to you… then take it home! With the knowledge that you are now the proud owner of a phenomenal original work of art, you can continue your artistic experience on board with a dinner of crispy crab cones topped with fluffy avocado mousse at Wonderland!

While there’s a fabulous selection of art for sale in the gallery, if you want an extra side of excitement, pick up a complimentary flute of champagne then plug into the electricity of a live Park West art auction! Stay for the fast and furious bidding and maybe you’ll take home a masterpiece!

Discovery Princess

Also setting sail in the spring of 2022 will be the sixth and final Royal-class ship from Princess Cruise Line. With Sky Suites offering the largest decks at sea that have a full 270-degree sweeping view, you’ll experience cruising and west coast sunsets at sea like never before. While onboard, you will be encouraged to unwind in ultimate comfort at The Sanctuary and fill up your senses with world-class dining options from Michelin-star chefs.

The Discovery Princess begins with sailings from Los Angeles in late March of 2022, exploring Mexican Rivera ports like Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and Mazatlan before heading up to the Pacific Northwest for Alaska cruise season. Imagine, seeing the glaciers and fjords of The Last Frontier while finding the perfect new artwork to add to your collection!

After an auction or an art seminar, you can indulge in an extraordinary dinner at the Chef’s Table Lumière. This divine culinary journey begins with champagne and hors d’œuvres before moving on to a one-of-a-kind multi-course dinner created and hosted by the ship’s executive chef.

Whether you’re basking in the warm weather of Mexico and Southern California or experiencing the summer chills of spine-tingling adventure in Alaska, the destinations and ports of call you will experience on the Discovery Princess will be nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Equally as inspiring will be the art onboard the ship in the extensive Park West art gallery. You can stroll through admiring works by Peter Max , Thomas Kinkade , and Michael Godard , and attend an art history lecture to learn more about some of the great masters of the art world. Finally, you will not want to miss the entertaining Park West live auctions. There’s no charge to attend and you can participate in the bidding for a chance to take home a work of fine art that will not only be a stunning showpiece in your home but also serve as a lasting memory from your Discovery Princess vacation.

Celebrity Beyond

The third ship in Celebrity’s revolutionary Edge Series—Celebrity Beyond—arrives in Europe in April ’22 and promises to deepen the connection between you and the sea. This elegant vessel will accomplish this through expanded outdoor and open-air spaces, like a two-story Sunset Bar imagined by world-famous designer Nate Berkus, the redesigned Rooftop Garden created by the visionary Kelly Hoppen, a glass-domed Solarium pool area, and the cantilevered Magic Carpet floating platform that’s the unforgettable home of dining, drinking, and live entertainment 13 stories above sea level.

This ship’s luxurious design seamlessly blends the inside and out to make passengers feel a bond with the natural world that goes beyond anything they’ve ever experienced on water. Celebrity Beyond is set to redefine the art of luxury travel, and with that comes Park West Gallery art!

Park West Gallery Warning

Cool Cruiser

I just posted this for Carnival, but it applies to Norwegian as well...

Almost two years ago, we went on our first cruise on Carnival Victory. Most of what we purchased (Igor Medvedev) we're still happy with, which you can't purchase off Ebay and frame for any less. I suggest not participating in the auctions and working out deals in the sales office for 30% less than their starting auction price.

We did mistakenly purchase a set not knowing that it excluded frame/matted/shipped, and that was our fault. None the less, I view the experience less than favorable, and the "shill" raffle winner at the end was the topper. This individual started bidding on everything without caution or reaction, and the staff seamed to ignore her instead of cheerleading her.

Park West Gallery's biggest offense is selling Peter Max "unique variations", which are blatant frauds that Peter Max had never even touched. Fine Art Registry, while they've gotten into their own integrity issues this year, did pretty extensive research into the company. They had interviews with ex employees, who claimed extortion had been used to renew contracts, bullying, and unfair quota pressures. There were also allegations towards the artists themselves, claiming Park West printing more serigraphs than contracted without paying commission.

Dont forget BUYER BEWARE

deladypilot

I don't go to the auctions nor would I buy on a cruise ship. My thought is that if I want real art then the best place to find it would be at home at a reputable dealer.

Over the years there has been many stories of how you get ripped off at the auctions. Its kind of like buying jewelry on the ship. If you really want it and you really like it then get it, just remember that it probably is not worth what you paid for it.

Jewellery on the last cruises we have been on we have bought rings which when valued at home for insurance has been greater than what we paid

Also we have bought pearl necklace and braclet at $100 a time and he been valued for insurance between $750 and $1500 so I have no complaints there

But I guess like anything you buy its buyer beware lol if u get a good deal u did well if u get ripped off get over it

Its kind of like buying jewelry on the ship. If you really want it and you really like it then get it, just remember that it probably is not worth what you paid for it.

As far as the artist we love, I view it as a mistake we don't regret. We at least logged into Ebay to make sure they couldn't be purchased cheaper ($300 - $400 when you haggle with them, or $200 on Ebay unframed). We've actually purchase a couple more off the ship, and the cost is the same.

Now with the "free" painting and the 3 piece set, we were deceived, but not blameless in making sure that expenses were all disclosed. The unacceptable portion of it was pushing Peter Max frauds (2K+ each), which I got 3 sales pitches for, and having a shill win the raffle for $500 credit. These turn out to be hand picked for the person more likely to buy an expensive painting, such as the Peter Max.

Jewelry, that's another story. I met a guy who put his savings into Tanzanite gems after being told they were an instant money maker at $200 a carat. We saw them for $100 at Macy's right off the ship, and lets' not get into how much jewelry is marked up...

When we have bought jewellery it wasn't for a money making scheme but because the old warship I'm married to likes it

When ur getting pearls with 18 carat gold clasp for $100 it doesn't take a genius to know ur getting value for money

I don't mind high pressure sales, even mild shenanigans, but these cruise lines have no business giving investment advice, or selling fake work. It's like selling a fake Rolex, or listening to a stock broker who's doing a pump & dumb. it's not about "getting over it", it's about telling others to stay away. Royal Caribbean has already dropped Park West Gallery over the fraud situation, and Carnival and Norwegian should do the same. I can't speak for Norwegian, but Carnival's shopping seminar is unacceptable.

We are happy what we bought. We did not feel any pressure on what we purchased . But, you should always be careful with purchases ANYWHERE!

Not that this is apples to applies, but we took a tour in St. Lucia with a couple that purchased self serve Ice Cream for $6 at the port. I purchased pistachio ice cream in a local store for $.30, which I'm sure tasted better than what they had. The point is, it's crazy how easy it is to get ripped off or find a deal depending on where you go.

We're do u go for your apples you have the art of buying ice cream well sorted lol

We're do u go for your apples

We get our apples from an organic farmstand, in an overstock package deal.

Lol but is it as good a deal as the ice cream

Well, we bought a picture I liked. I would not necessarily call it "art." The price was reasonable and it was framed. What they did NOT add was that they would not ship it.

I was ASSURED that I would be allowed to carry it on a plane.

Yeah, right. American Airlines charged me $75 for the "priveledge" at the gate!

When I got home and unwrapped it I found it covered in plastic, not glass and that "giclee" is a fancy term for an Epson print.

Seeing how internet access is so bad on a ship it was impossible to research before I did this and I had not planned to get suckered in like that or I would have done my homework before the cruise....lesson learned.

I have it in my livingroom, with the plastic film instead of glass still on it, which will probably degrade the print over time but I leave it as a pretty reminder that if it sounds too good to be true, it is... ;)

For those that say they got an appraisal for 15 times what they paid, I would offer the appraiser the sale. You could make cruising free a couple of time a year. Just buy two or three pieces each trip, turn your $300 purchase into $4500 and your golden!! An insurance appraisal has very little to do with the worth of a piece. The true value is either what the appraiser will give you for the piece, or the value of your pleasure in owning.

Neither jewelry stores or cruise lines can stay in business selling jewelry for less than their cost for very long.

Gold, silver and precious gems are sold in bulk at an international rate.

surely the insurance appraisal is the replacement value of whatever it is u have purchased

and yeah we have bought jewelery in the Caribbean and on the boat and made money on it when we got home

When (if) I go to the Park West Gallery auctions, I do it for amusement only. I always take my laptop or ipad so I can do a search for some item I might be interested in. Park West often has some sports memorabilia stuff that interests me. But when I find the price for the same thing on the internet, the Park West staff stops talking to me. I do however seem to make new friends as I walk around with my laptop/ipad. Tee Hee.:p

That sounds like the smart way to do it, and you can't throw the baby out with the bathwater. We made friends too, sipped champagne, and got most of our artwork at the lower end price. The only sports memorabilia were pictures of Mohammed Ali.

.....it's not the cruise line giving advice, Park West is their own entity, kind of like a franchise. True the cruise line allows them to sell stuff on the ship, so you know what? If no one buys from them, I don't think they would stay on the ship then.

I don't believe it is a franchise, more of a partnership, or leasing agreement. Park West likely pays rent and/or commission. A mall would likely not renew a lease for a company trying to short change people, or selling some kind of fake, to avoid getting a rep as a flee market. Barnes & Noble would drop Starbucks if the quality took a drastic nose dive. Let's say an amusement park leased to a pizza stand, and the staff were unsanitary making their guests sick.

When you offer an entertainment venue, and you partner and profit from unethical behavior, where does their responsibility end and yours begin? Royal Caribbean agreed with my viewpoint....

It's not about ethics, it's about money. If NCL can make a buck and use the 'partnership' agreement to avoid any bad press or responsibility, they will do it as long as the money rolls in.

Everything has a cost, including dropping the art gallery. An "ethical gallery" replacement would likely produce less revenue. The flip side of that is that NCL may lose some customers, or maintain a sector of their customer base who are more cautious. I agree that they'll do what's bringing in the money, but it can't be a win-win.

Over the years we've purchased three paintings through Park West. We skipped the auction (don't need that "show") and bought them outright - two Igor Medvedev and one Andrew Bone. We likely overpaid, but we're pleased with them and enjoy having them in our house - so it's all good.

I think we've bought all that we're going to however!

I thought at one point that Park West had fallen out of favor with the cruise lines following some bad press (regarding authenticity and such). I guess that it's blown over enough that the cruise lines decided that their cut was more important than reputation. ;)

Well, I can only report our experiences and they have been favorable with Park West. Our Art Representative, Jullian spent lots of time with us, explaining every detail of the art we were interested in, which happened to be two mini Max's. He actually advised us not to purchase art in the hopes of making money. Art should not always be considered an investment as we have no way of knowing whether the value will increase. He advised to purchase a piece of art because you love it! Well we love our art and TBH wouldn't think of selling it. Of what we can determine we got a pretty decent deal on it as well. As far as Columbian Emeralds are concerned, we got a hell of a deal on an emerald ring when we were aboard the Gem. That was the words directly from my hometown jeweler. :) Just be cautious with your purchases!!!

terrydtx

I will go to the auctions on a sea day and ONLY to enjoy the free champagne and not make any purchases. On one of our HAL cruises friends of ours bought over $5000 worth of Peter Max prints and found out they were almost worthless after they got home. The Gallery will not stand behind any of their fraudulent pieces they sell either! On the Nieuw Amsterdam they took over one of the prime lounges every day on sea days to sell their junk.

park west norwegian cruise line

This Norwegian Cruise sailing takes you on a bucket list adventure: What it's like aboard

F or Kylie Herd, an Australian passenger on Norwegian Dawn’s Feb. 25 southern Africa itinerary, cruising has been the best way to check places off her bucket list.

“I just go with whatever cruise line has the itinerary that I want to do at the time that I’m available. It tends to be Norwegian, and when I saw that Norwegian had all these African cruises, I just thought, ‘I’m going to spend summer in Africa,’ because it’s an amazing itinerary,” she told USA TODAY.

When it comes to cruising, most Americans probably think of bopping around the Caribbean or checking out the wilds of Alaska if they’re feeling especially adventurous, but that’s really just scratching the surface. Cruise lines are increasingly offering diverse itineraries including expedition cruises to remote parts of the globe and introductory sailings to help travelers explore countries and regions they might never visit otherwise.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Madagascar was the real draw for months of consecutive cruises on the Dawn for Herd.

“I’ve been trying to go to Madagascar for years. I always wanted to go there way before the movies ever came out. It’s one of those places that’s really difficult to get to,” she said. “When I saw Madagascar on a cruise itinerary I was like, ‘I have to do it.’ ”

Although the Feb. 25 sailing had to skip Madagascar for logistical reasons after a delay departing Mauritius, Herd said that she was able to visit the country earlier on her trip and that it was a real highlight.

Norwegian’s Africa itineraries had various changes and missed ports throughout the season. Passenger contracts give cruise lines some leeway to alter itineraries on short notice for reasons including weather or conditions on the ground that prevent ships from reaching or being accommodated safely in a scheduled port. Such changes can be especially common in regions prone to political unrest or that lack sophisticated port facilities.

Even so, Herd said she understood why passengers who missed out would be frustrated, but she encouraged her fellow travelers to keep an eye on the positive. “I understand the disappointment. I was disappointed, too, but we’re still having a great time.”

The Feb. 25 cruise still stopped at Reunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean, which has an active volcano, as well as ports in South Africa where travelers could spot local wildlife.

Safari from a cruise

Norwegian Dawn stopped at four ports in South Africa, three of which offered safari experiences as shore excursions.

▶ From Richard’s Bay, passengers could visit the iSimangasilo Wetland Park , home to elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, zebras and other classic African big game. The park is about an hour and a half drive from the port, and Norwegian’s shore excursion included two game drives, snorkeling and a traditional South African braai, or barbecue.

Just as cruise itineraries can sometimes be subject to last-minute changes, safaris are at the whim of wild animals. Sightings are not guaranteed, but patience and vigilance are often rewarded.

▶ In Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), Norwegian Dawn’s passengers could visit Addo Elephant National Park, also about an hour and a half drive from the port.

As the name suggests, Addo is home to a huge and docile population of more than 600 elephants. These animals often congregate around watering holes accessible from well-worn safari tracks.

Even after a strong rainfall the night before the excursion, which allowed elephants to retreat into the bush and temporarily lessen their reliance on overtaxed wells, dozens of the creatures greeted visitors coming from the ship for two-hour game drives.

▶ In Mossel Bay, passengers could also access private game reserves, which often have a higher concentration of wildlife roaming free but can include animals that are not directly indigenous to the area.

Cape Town and the winelands

There’s more to Africa than safaris, and Cape Town is an especially good place to experience metropolitan life and other kinds of outdoor activities on the continent.

South Africa’s legislative capital offers excellent hiking, a great foodie culture, beautiful (if slightly chilly) Atlantic beaches, penguins and more.

For travelers willing to explore beyond the city, South Africa’s wine country is close at hand in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and many vineyards offer tastings and meal experiences. One Norwegian excursion took passengers to the Blaauwklippen wine estate in Stellenbosch, which is best known for its Zinfandel.

Is an Africa cruise worth it?

From a financial standpoint, a cruise around Africa can be an excellent way to explore. For American travelers, however, flights to and from the ship are often more expensive than the cruise itself.

For example, a 13-day Norwegian itinerary that begins in Cape Town on Dec. 7 and ends in Mauritius on Dec. 20 has prices that start at $899 per person for an inside stateroom, but flights can be well over $1,000 round trip. The current cheapest itinerary from Detroit, for example, is a 42-hour slog on multiple airlines via Montreal and Dubai to Cape Town. The return trip is a bit shorter, at 31 hours, also via Dubai and Montreal. That routing would cost $1,694 per person in economy as of March 18, according to Google Flights.

Logistically speaking, though, it can be much easier to book a cruise and rely on the line’s shore excursions to expand one's horizons than to coordinate one's own safari.

“With multiple diverse ports of call within one coastal continental area, our Africa voyages provide our guests the opportunity to explore lush rainforests or volcanoes, experience captivating wildlife tours, learn about the rich culture on the South African coastline, indulge in Cape Town’s incredible wine regions, and so much more,” Brian Gilroy, vice president of revenue management and itinerary planning for Norwegian Cruise Line, said in a statement to USA TODAY.

The one thing to keep in mind is that the African cruise market is less mature than the Caribbean – at many ports, there just aren’t comparable facilities to handle big ships. That doesn’t mean the cruises can’t or don’t happen, just that sometimes the operation is a little less fluid than the well-oiled Miami machine.

“Our 11- and 12-day cruises start and end in either Cape Town, South Africa, or Port Louis, Mauritius, and include an overnight stay in one of those magnificent cities, giving our guests the chance to fully explore what these regions offer. The variety of adventures our guests can experience in these destinations are endless, which makes for a truly unforgettable cruise experience," Gilroy said.

Travelers may be more likely to encounter a hiccup on their Africa cruise, but that’s all part of traveling to a new and exciting place. A missed port or an extra sea day can be a great time time to take stock, focus on the highlights, enjoy the experience of unlocking a new destination, and maybe take another sip of the wine your onboard sommelier recommended.

Just take a page out of Herd the Australian’s book. Despite some schedule changes, she said, “I’ve loved every single thing.”

Charting New Waters: Norwegian Cruise Line Unveils Ambitious Plans For Eight Ships

park west norwegian cruise line

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd  (NYSE:NCLH) has unveiled a total of eight vessels, representing nearly 25,000 additional berths to be built across three brands.

The company also launched the construction of a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the company’s private island destination in the Bahamas and its Caribbean port of call.

The strategy is expected to boost Norwegian Cruise’s product offering, guest experiences, and operational infrastructure.

The new ship orders across all three brands are scheduled for delivery over a ten-year period, between 2026 and 2036.

After the delivery of four Prima-Plus class ships from 2025 through 2028, the cruise operator is expected to take delivery of four approximately 200,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of nearly 5,000 guests, in 2030, 2032, 2034, and 2036.

Oceania Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 86,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 1,450 guests in 2027 and 2029.

Finally, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 77,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 850 guests, in 2026 and 2029.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said President and CEO Harry Sommer.

The company has obtained export credit financing with favorable terms to fund 80% of the contract price of each of the two Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises ships.

The new pier development in the Bahamas is set to begin in summer 2024 and be completed by late 2025 with an investment of about $150 million.

Stifel  analyst Steven Wieczynski reiterated a Buy rating on the shares with a price target of $25.

NCLH now has 13 ships on order over the next 12 years for a combined 41,000 berths, representing about 65% capacity growth, noted the analyst.

With a historically smaller fleet, the company has been building new ships more aggressively versus peers in order to enter/serve certain markets.

Over the next decade this will not only give NCLH the biggest growth story within the cruise industry but will also allow them to continue entering new markets with minimal cannibalization to their fleet, the analyst noted.

Owning cruise stocks when supply growth has been low for an extended period of time, as per the analyst. While the headline of eight ships might make investors panic, the analyst urged them to look at the fine print.

Overall, according to the analyst, the positives surely outweigh the negatives.

Price Action : NCLH shares are trading lower by 2.35% at $18.93 on the last check Tuesday.
