Fabulous Trip

Truly a wonderful way to see the Loire Valley. Jon and Ali were great hosts by providing cycling routes with lots of recommendations of what to see and do. Ali made delicious dinners each evening ending with beautiful desserts. We loved the trip, the farmhouse and the camaraderie.

Jann, California, USA, Sept 2023

Perfect vacation experience

A perfect way to explore the Loire Valley at our own cycling pace. Each day was a new adventure, ending with a gourmet meal that topped all the dinners we had in France.

The warm and friendly hosts and their beautiful venue made it a perfect vacation experience.

Janet & Doug, Maryland, USA, Sept 2019

A most excellent holiday!

The most fabulous week exploring this beautiful part of France.  Quiet country lanes through forests, vineyards, to sleepy towns and villages, and impressive Loire châteaux. The biggest compliment I can give, is that when we left, it felt like we had spent a week with old friends rather than new acquaintances. A most excellent holiday in these most unusual of times.

The very best Loire Valley bike tours

  • Tours in France

Bikes parked as their riders enjoy a fabulous view of a castle

One of the best ways to visit the majestic castles, verdant vineyards, pretty little villages, historic towns and gorgeous gardens of the UNESCO-listed Loire Valley is by bike. Loire Brakes guided tours offer a brilliant, relaxing slow travel experience (e-bikes provided) for those who want to discover real France. Immerse yourself in the culture and lifestyle of France. Enjoy superb wines and fabulous gastronomy. Stay in a fabulously renovated charming farmhouse, and discover the very best of the Loire Valley with local guides Denise and Kevin.

Explore the Loire Valley by e-bike

bike tours in loire

This is not one of those cycling holidays where you’ll slog it out. This is a holiday where you can relax and really enjoy the ride at your own pace. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t been on a bike in years. You don’t need to worry about being out of practice. E-bikes give you all the benefits and pleasure of cycling but take the hard work out, and put the fun into a cycling tour.

Explore the French Valley of the Kings, a land of majestic Chateaux. A landscape that’s verdant with luscious vineyards, peppered with historic towns and villages and countless historic treasures. You’ll discover the history and culture of the region as you go. And you’ll visit off the beaten track parts of the Loire Valley that most visitors miss.

Depending on which tour you choose, you’ll visit the royal fortress of Chinon and the stunningly pretty historic town that lies at its feet. Wander the gorgeous gardens of Villandry. Visit the town and castle of Langeais, the fairy tale castle of Ussé and the exquisite chateau Azay le Rideau . Discover the romantic allure of the Loire Valley and visit the homes of the great sculptor Rodin and his Camille, and of Edward and Mrs Simpson. Explore lovely Saumur, home to a majestic castle and cobbled streets lined with ancient buildings. And the royal Abbey of Fontevraud, an incredibly atmospheric place with an equally incredible history.

bike tours in loire

And you’ll stay in a beautifully renovated Loire country house, where you can take a dip in the pool and relax with a glass of local wine in the gorgeous gardens.

A taste of the Loire Valley

bike tours in loire

You’ll also do wine tastings of the finest wines the Loire Valley can offer with tours at superb vineyards. And there are visits to cheesemakers where you can taste the local favourites like Sainte Maure de Touraine. Plus you’ll get to visit some of the Loire Valley’s most vibrant markets. Enjoy delicious picnics that present the finest specialities – traditional rillettes and paté washed down with one of the region’s famous wines like Chinon. And maybe top it off with some poires tapées (pressed pears). Or an apple tart made with red wine jam – a speciality of Chinon. You’ll be stopping off at the most incredible locations for your picnic break, and you’ll dine at authentic, hand-picked restaurants that offer a true taste of the Loire Valley.

Slow travel in the Loire Valley

bike tours in loire

The Loire Valley is criss crossed by cycling trails, velo routes on quiet country roads and green routes which makes for tranquil riding. And many routes lead you straight to the doorsteps of the beautiful castles. But you won’t be cycling all day, every day. 4-wheeled transport is also included as some sites in the Loire Valley are easier to get to that way. You’ll be chauffeured so that you can relax and enjoy the visit – and the wine tastings – without worrying.

Off the beaten track in the Loire Valley

The Loire Valley holds over 1,000 chateaux, is known as the ‘Cradle of the French Language’, has some of the country’s best wines and has a wealth of historic towns that could send anyone into their own fairy tale. And it has plenty of secrets too. You’ll get to explore some of them including a fascinating troglodyte village. You’ll get to play Boules de Fort, a boules game unique to the Loire Valley (and huge fun). And you’ll enjoy a traditional wooden, flat-bottomed boat ride along the river Vienne.

Loire Brakes go the extra mile to make your tour special, memorable and unique.

REASONS TO DISCOVER LOIRE VALLEY

Loire Valley Castles

There are about 3000 castles in the area! Here are some of the most remarkable:

  • Chateau de Chambord – Originally built as a hunting lodge for Francis I, this structure has withstood the test of time. It is one of the most recognizable châteaux in the world and the largest, by far, in the Loire Valley. The magnificent building boasts several huge towers, 440 rooms, 84 staircases and an incredible 365 fireplaces. It’s surrounded by a park and a game reserve, complete with red deer for hunting purposes. It is certainly a sight to behold.
  • Chateau de Chenonceau – Built on the Cher River allowing the chateau’s unique architecture to be reflected in the water is the “Castle of the Lady” . It is nicknamed to honor the different ladies who played a primary role in designing the castle as it stands today, from its exterior appearance to the rooms inside. Renaissance furniture, a vast ensemble of 16th and 17th century tapestries and a great number of masterpieces are a few of the treasures of its visit.
  • Chateau Chinon – Located on the Vienne River , the Chateau de Chinon has housed as well as imprisoned many influential French leaders in the past. It was here that Joan of Arc visited the disguised King Charles VII to convince him to build an army to liberate France from England. The Templar Knights carved symbols while incarcerated in the castle’s dungeon, which can still be seen today. The castle is divided by a dry moat into three parts, Fort Saint-Georges to the east, Château de Milieu in the center, and Fort du Coudray to the west.
  • Azay-le-Rideau – Recognized as a French national monument , this castle is one of the earliest French Renaissance chateaux. Azay-le-Rideau is built on an island on the Indre River . Its foundations rise straight out of the water. You do not want to miss visiting this striking structure.

Chartres and its Cathedral

Chartres’s breathtaking cathedral is considered to be one of the best examples of gothic architecture in the entire world. It is therefore a UNESCO World Heritage site and its towers are listed as a French National Monument. Rebuilt on the site of a holy cathedral destroyed by lightning and fire, the Chartres Cathedral was designed and erected to honor the sacred relic Sancta Camisa, which miraculously survived fire and destruction unharmed. The cathedral’s magnificent exterior opens to an even more awe-inspiring interior, with its brilliant colors and detailed stained glass windows. Medieval carvings adorn the doors and porches while hand carved sculptures provide testament to the Christian beliefs while drawing a comparison to the close ties that were believed to exist between God and the Kings and Queens who ruled during that time. A walk through the Chartres cathedral is truly a walk through history .

Gardens of Villandry

The gardens surrounding the Chateau de Villandry are often referred to as the most beautiful gardens in the world . Among the 15 acres of different gardens featured at Villandry, there is a water garden, vegetable gardens and incredible ornamental flower gardens, all of which are strategically laid out in formal patterns and linked together with low hedges. Give your legs a break from pedaling, while you take a stroll through an assortment of picture-perfect gardens. Like all the castles in the Loire Valley, the Chateau de Villandry is part of what makes the Loire Valley a World Heritage site and it is currently open to the public for tours.

Loire Valley Vineyards

A trip to France would not be complete without a visit to the Loire Valley. Perfectly located nearby Paris, it offers visitors a chance to experience the natural beauty of the French countryside with quiet riverbanks and countless vineyards. The Loire Valley is known for its great wine , and cycling through the villages and vineyards you must go on a wine tasting tour !

Although most people come to the Loire Valley to visit the ancient castles, the gorgeous landscape is often the reason why they come back. If you are looking for picturesque towns off the beaten path, the Loire Valley is the perfect region, as it hosts several of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France” .

Amboise and its castle

Amboise was once home of the French royal court and The Royal castle became one of the favorite royal residences. It was rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries and introduced Italian style and taste into the Loire Valley. Nearby is a smaller castle, Le Clos Lucé , where Leonardo Da Vinci lived and worked for a few years. Today it is a museum dedicated to Leonardo Da Vinci, and gives good insight into his work and genius in different fields such as art, civil and military engineering, architecture and urban planning, anatomy, botany… Make sure you visit the “Parc Mini Châteaux” a 2 hectare park with the most significant châteaux of the Loire on a 1/25 scale. Really amazing!

LOIRE VALLEY FOOD AND WINE

As you probably already know, the Loire Valley is wine country . From the dry white Muscadet, Pouilly Fume and Sancerre wines to the light red Saumur, Bourgueil and Chinon, the Loire Valley wines are famous worldwide. Our Wine Tour gives you the opportunity to take part in wine tasting sessions of some of the most delicious French wines. Don’t miss out!

The Loire Valley also offers some fine cuisine. Try the very typical Fricassee d’escargots au Sancerre – snails cooked in Sancerre wine ! And don’t leave without tasting the goat cheese specialties: the Crottin de Chavignol and the Valancay. Served warm on a bed of greens or in a cheese pie, they are delicious.

LOIRE VALLEY GEOGRAPHY

The Loire Valley is located in the center of France, with the Loire River symbolically dividing the country in two. This slow-moving river, the longest of France (1012 km), crosses the beautiful regions of Touraine (the area around the city of Tours) and Anjou (the area around Angers).

Both valleys are covered with vineyards producing some of the best wines in France . And they are also home to many castles (more than 3,000!) . Among the most famous Châteaux of the Loire Valley, our tours will bring you to the Chateau de Chambord, Chateau d’Amboise, Chateau de Chenonceau and many more!

LOIRE VALLEY HISTORY

For centuries, the Loire River was used for transportation between the Atlantic and the heart of France. During the Hundred Year’s War , the river marked the boundary between French and English territory. It has always played an important and critical part in the History of France.

Most of the Loire Valley castles were not built to protect people against enemies but to illustrate the prosperity of France. Indeed, it is in the Loire Valley that the king Francois Ist (1515-1547) and his court chose to build castles to be able to lead a life-style inspired by the new humanist values of the Renaissance and to celebrate beauty , luxury and refinement.

Cycling Loire Valley: the Loire by bike trail

The great châteaux in Amboise, the Montlouis-sur-Loire vineyards, the pretty town of Tours, the chateau and gardens of Villandry, the castles of Langeais and Azay-le-Rideau, the royal fortress of Chinon… when you are preparing your cycling holidays in France along the Loire by bike trail (“The Loire à vélo”), don’t forget, along with the distances to ride, to set aside time for sightseeing.

The Loire by bike, a unique route

In France, the Loire by bike trail was the first marked and safe cycle route . The project was initiated in 1995 by the Centre Val de Loire and Pays de la Loire regions to form the western section of Eurovélo 6 . This major route thus runs alongside three major European rivers (the Loire, the Rhine and the Danube), crossing France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, the Servie, Bulgaria and Romania.

From the foothills of the Massif Central to the beaches of the Atlantic, the Loire by bike follows the banks of Europe’s last great wild river . Over almost 900 km, an exceptional diversity of landscapes is on offer to lovers of nature and heritage.

In Touraine, to be precise , cycling along the Loire River itinerary takes you to the heart of the Val de Loire and its great châteaux, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . For just under 100 km, your knurls will take you to the ramparts of Amboise , the lively heart of the city of Tours , the entrance to the gardens of Villandry or the walls of the royal fortress of Chinon .

The castles of Langeais and Ussé are also on your route, as is the Aquarium of Touraine . And that’s not all! Antennas allow you to deviate from the main route , to reach the castles of Chenonceau and Azay-le-Rideau , The Rétro Mecanic City Maurice Dufresne , the Haute Couture gardens , the Royal City of Loches , but also to catch up with other major routes such as the Indre by bike , Cœur de France by bike (Val de Cher – Canal de Berry) or even the Camino de Santiago by bike . Note also that in Chinon, a greenway leads to the “ideal city” of Richelieu , via the fairy-tale gardens of the Château du Rivau .

In addition to the castles, the Loire by bike itinerary will also take you through several vineyards . It’s up to you to improvise a tasting break in the tourist cellars of Amboise, Montlouis, Azay-le-Rideau, Chinon or Bourgueil!

Discover loire valley.

Macs Adventure has been running self-guided walking & cycling tours in France since 2008 . Our tours in France initially started with walking the Tour du Mont Blanc, which led us to seek out more and more areas where we could help people discover France on foot and bike.

From humble beginnings, we now send over 2000 walkers and cyclists to France every year , each cycling or walking the route that excites them the most. We provide the freedom to choose your way, itinerary and travel companions and discover France at your own pace.

We know how daunting it can be, setting off on an adventure of this scale, and we quickly realised how important it was to have excellent partners on the ground in France to deal with any issues that you might come across. We are proud to say that we work incredibly closely with all our accommodation suppliers and luggage transfer teams, and should you have the slightest issue, they will fall over themselves to help you out.

Expect comfortable, friendly overnight accommodation in local B&Bs and guesthouses (on our Luxury tour, it is a higher standard). We carry your bags to lighten your load so you can concentrate on enjoying the unique culture, food and scenery of the Loire. No hostels, no leaky tents, no heavy bags on your back, just a straightforward active holiday that you can book with confidence that we have it all covered for you.

Why Choose Macs Adventure to Book your Cycling Tour in the Loire?

Not only is the Loire the longest river in France, but there is also an abundance of wildlife that live in it. For the bird watchers, expect to see buzzards, eagles,  woodpeckers, and larks.  When cycling through the forests, be sure to also lookout for the many uncommon bird species you might find, such as the short-toed treecreeper and the European bee-eater (which can eat up to 250 bees a day!). It's not just birds either! There are many land animals such as wild boars and aquatic creatures, so keep an eye out for bitten tree trunks, as you might see a beaver! Beavers were reintroduced to the area around 30 years ago and are commonly seen along the river.

Interestingly, another semi-aquatic rodent seen in the Loire river is a Coypu (pictured). Coypu origins are in South-American, and they found their way over to France due to fur traders in the 1940s. When the market collapsed, they escaped and still inhabit the river to this day.

Loire Valley Wildlife

The Loire valley is famous for its wines, but did you know that according to the liqueur maker Chambord, their recipe takes after a raspberry liqueur made in the Loire Valley in the late 1600s? The liqueur is created from raspberries, blackberries, Madagascar Vanilla, Moroccan citrus peel, honey, Cognac, and other spices and is an easy way to turn your glass of Champagne (or Prosecco!) into a cocktail just by adding a splash of this delicious liqueur. Chambord is also used in many cocktails, including the "French Martini," consisting of Vodka, Chambord, Black Raspberry Liqueur, and pineapple juice.

Fun fact - Despite its name, the 'French Martini' was invented in New York! But it is known as the "French" Martini because it's made with this French raspberry liqueur!

Loire Valley's Famous Raspberry Liqueur

The Loire Valley has over 300 chateaux! Some are architectural masterpieces, and others range from fortified castles to splendid residences. Many were built on hilltops to defend against enemies, and some were inspired by Italian designers.

Historically they are the legacy of French kings and queens who loved this area of France and had royal estates here. Then came the tradition of majestic gardens, so you will often find these in the grounds.

Whatever your particular interest, we are sure that you will revel in visits to the following, most of which you can visit on our Loire Valley Cycling and Walking Tours.

Azay-le-Rideau

Described as a fairy-tale castle, this imposing structure was built in the 16th century and has turrets and a moat. It was actually built on an island (in the middle of the River Indre) during the reign of Francois 1 and is a combination of French and Italian design.

This magnificent chateau is the largest in the Loire Valley and is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, built-in white limestone. Explore its sumptuous interior. Rather than simply a residential palace or a hunting lodge, it is a fantastic work of art inspired by Leonardo da Vinci. It also has an 18th-century French formal garden that links up with the surrounding forest.

This castle is a feat of medieval architecture, spans the River Cher, and was built in 1513. If you visit during the summer months, you can take an illuminated night walk. It has a rich museum collection of furniture, paintings, and tapestries and also has extraordinary gardens, one of which was designed by Catherine de Medici.

Located in the town center, this chateau has frequently been remodeled and has buildings that span the 13th to the 17th centuries. It has four wings and a diversity of styles stemming from the fact that it was designed and built by seven kings and ten queens of France. You can see a Sound & Light Show in the courtyard from April to September.

There is no way we could we have negotiated the busy pedestrian, auto and tram traffic on bicycles on our own. We didn’t have to worry about following a map or deciphering French signs — and we were offered a true insider’s view of this fascinating city. Our charming guide, the owner of the company and a Nantes native, is fluent in English so he could answer our questions as well as narrate stories. We really enjoyed the entire experience, even though it was a cold, rainy, windy day. We had a great time and learned so much. Highly recommend.” -MaineMermaid ( Read more reviews )

Which Loire Valley Cycling Tour is best for me?

Here are some questions to help you choose the best Loire Valley cycling tour:

What daily distance are you comfortable riding? If you don’t often ride a bike, you might want to choose a day tour with a short ride to a chateau and back.

Are you an experienced cyclist? Avid cyclists may prefer a tour with a longer option, perhaps a multi-day tour. Experienced cyclists might consider renting a bike and designing their own cycling tour.

Will you be cycling with kids? If you want a family cycle tour, choose a tour that focuses on French history and one or more magnificent castles, rather than long distances or vineyards.

Are you nervous about your fitness level? If you’re worried about keeping up with your group, choose a tour with an electric bike. E-bikes are all the fun of cycling, with a lot less work!

Are you bad with directions? If so, choose a guided tour! That way you won’t have to worry about whether you should have gone left or right at that last turn!

What to expect on a Loire Valley Cycling Tour

While each tour is different, there are some things that you can expect from each bicycle tour on this list.

Most tours are for small groups . The minimum group size is set by each tour company.

Many tours include a stop for snacks or lunch .

Often, the tour will include a glass of wine , a wine tasting, or a vineyard tour. You might be offered local white wines, like Sauvignon Blanc or Chenin Blanc. Or you can try reds, like Cabernet Franc, Chenin Noir, or Cabernet Sauvignon.

If you prefer not to drink alcohol, simply ask for a non-alcoholic option .

Many tours have chosen a cycle route that is along bike paths or quiet roads , so you don’t have to worry about traffic.

If the bike route goes through a city or small village , the guide will show you the best way to go, or you’ll be given clear directions and a map .

The cycle routes for these tours are generally fairly flat routes . The routes mainly have a gentle slope, but you can expect a few steep slopes.

If you are concerned about cycling abilities, you can opt for a cycling tour with electric bikes !

Luggage transfers are typically not included in single-day tours. However, if you need to have luggage held or transferred, enquire at the time of booking to see if this is a possibility. Luggage transfer is usually included in multi-day tours.

Some tours will pick you up and return you to your hotel after your day of cycling. (You could also request to be taken to the train station, if you’ll be traveling on after your bike tour–ask your tour company in advance to be sure.)

Level 1 Easy Our easiest trips. Well suited for beginners, seniors and families, who are looking for a relaxed cycling event. Flat routes with sometimes a gentle slope. Short distances; not more than 35 km/21 miles per day. There’s still enough time ‘to smell the flowers’. Often trips along rivers and seashores like the Loire river or the Atlantic Coast. Level 2 Easy to moderate These trips, for the ones who are cycling now and then, are a bit more challenging. Still these cycle adventures remain relaxed holidays. The steep slopes are short, while the longer slopes are not so steep. The landscape varies from flat land to gently hills. The distances, which are not more than 50 km/31 mi, make the cycling days a bit longer. Level 3 Moderate These are trips for more sportive people who are cycling regularly and having a good condition. The slopes are longer and steeper, the daily distances mostly between 50 km/31 miles and 65 km/40 miles. There are more challenging days during these holidays. Often these trips are taken place in the more hilly and a bit mountainous regions.. Level 4 Moderate to streneous  For those who want to search for their cycling limits and have a splendid condition. Some big climbs, long and demanding distances (mainly more than 65 km/40 miles) makes those trips a challenging event.  Those cycle adventures are taken place in the more mountainous regions of France. Level 5 Streneous These challenging adventures are only for the experienced cyclists who have done those kinds of longer and strenuous trips before. The combination of long daily distances with regularly steep climbs are making these challenges great for the ‘tough few’.

Le circuit de la Loire à vélo réserve de bien jolies surprises, comme le château de Chambord, perle de la Renaissance.

Reading time: 0 min Published on 14 February 2024, updated on 15 April 2024

if the sunny days are making your legs tingle, saddle up! In the land of the Tour de France, there is no shortage of beautiful escapes. With 22,800 km of cycle routes and greenways, 5,500km of regional tourist routes, 3,000 road and mountain bike circuits inviting you to enjoy gentle pedalling as a couple, with your family or with friends. In the countryside, along a canal, by the sea, in the vineyards or in the mountains, from Northern France to the Côte d'Azur and from Brittany to Alsace... here's a small selection of the most beautiful tours and detours and discover France by bike.

In chateaux country in Centre-Val de Loire

Between Orléans and Tours, the Loire à Vélo is one of the most beautiful cycling routes in France. In the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, history has sown fairy-tale chateaux, enchanting parkland and remarkable gardens. Chambord, Chenonceau, Blois and Azay-le-Rideau, the gems come one after the other along the royal river. For charming diversions and day trips, we recommend the Châteaux à Vélo routes and circuits. And for something new, the small country roads and gentle curves of the Indre. Whether you are cycling through Châteauroux, the medieval fortress of Montbazon, the Royal City of Loches, the Chateau of Palluau-sur-Indre or the ponds of the Brenne, the Indre by Bike is full of little-known treasures.

The GT20 in Corsica

For you information, Corsica is an island but also a mountain in the sea. So if you want to cycle there, it's preferable to do so in spring or autumn to avoid the heat and opt for electric assistance. This will allow you to enjoy the panoramic views and the intoxicating smell of the maquis, without setting foot on land. Like the GR20, its famous hiking counterpart, the GT20 (for Grande Traversée), inaugurated in 2019, criss-crosses the island of beauty from north to south. From Bastia in Haute-Corse to the Bonifacio gorges, this 600km cycle route takes place in 12 stages, via the sumptuous Cap Corse. Villages overlooking the Mediterranean, refreshing mountain streams, dizzying passes and dreamy beaches, you'll definitely be amazed.

The Corsica Grande Traversée (GT20)

The vineyard route in Alsace

With 2,500km of cycle routes, 11 legendary passes, 15 regional circuits, 55 local circuits and 3 EuroVélo, Alsace is at the head of the pack for cycling trips. Strasbourg, the French capital of cycling, it's easy to go off on a tangent, from pretty flowery villages to farm inns, from abbeys to gourmet cellars. If you had to choose just one route, it should be the Véloroute du Vignoble d'Alsace from Marlenheim to Thann. Traced in parallel with the famous Wine Route which celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2023, it winds its way along 143km, taking old railway lines, parts of the ancient Roman road and paths through the vineyards without hurrying. The Kaysenberg Valley cycle route comes a close second.

From bays to capes in Northern France

A dozen lighthouses, fortified sites, six UNESCO-listed belfries, charming Belle-Époque seaside resorts and from Le Touquet to Malo-les-Bains, the Velomaritime in the Hauts-de-France region, over 190km between Mers-Les-Bains and Dunkirk, will have you pedalling with enthusiasm. We love all the sections - but especially the one in the Baie de Somme with its beautiful views. Or to the north of Boulogne-sur-Mer, the site of the two Capes, Cap Gris-Nez and Cap Blanc-Nez, where you can ride at gull height and admire the beaches below. Another route goes between Arras and Amiens, on the Véloroute de la Mémoire. On this 90km route, which can be extended along the towpaths of the Somme Valley cycle route, you will come across the moving remains and memories of the First World War.

On the flax route in Normandy

Cycling from Paris along the Seine Valley is a way to discover Normandy as far as Le Havre and the famous beaches of Deauville. On the way, the Seine à Vélo cycle route invites you to discover Giverny, the birthplace of Impressionism, or the famous Château Gaillard. There is also Rouen and the luminous Jumièges Abbey before Honfleur and the green meadows of the Auge region. Are you looking for a sweet alternative? In June, when the flowers are in bloom, pedal in an ocean of blue on the Véloroute du Lin, 7km or so of greenways that wind through the hinterland of the Côte d'Albâtre, from the small resort of Pourville-sur-Mer to the cliffs of Fécamp.

Between vineyards and the ocean in Nouvelle Aquitaine

Bordeaux and its Cité du Vin, the Entre-deux-Mers, the Bassin d'Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat, the Atlantic beaches and the Gironde estuary, the fishing villages and small oyster ports, the Landes de Gascogne with their fragrant forests of maritime pines and, of course, the vineyards and great châteaux of the Médoc. This is an ideal environment for a cycling trip in Nouvelle Aquitaine. The Tour de Gironde à Vélo, 480km, is divided into peaceful stages according to your own pace, taking in part of the route of the Canal des Deux Mers. Meanwhile the Vélodyssée is an invigorating cycle route which crosses Brittany and then follows the Atlantic to the Basque coast. Saddle up!

Along the Canal du Midi in Occitanie

Cycling from Toulouse to the Mediterranean, via the proud city of Carcassonne, following the Canal du Midi in the shade of great plane trees, is one of the holy grails of cycling in Occitanie. The last few kilometres to Sète on the exceptional Lido greenway will leave you suspended between land and sea. You'll just have to get back on your feet to choose the swimming beach. Prefer to get some height? Passa Païs, the greenway of the Haut-Languedoc, on the mountainside, straddling the watershed, is a must. From the foothills of the Montagne Noire to the Massif du Caroux, via charming villages and a succession of bridges and tunnels of the old railway line, the pedalling has a lovely southern accent.

Estuary artworks in Pays de la Loire

Between the Atlantic coast and the Loire Valley, Pays de la Loire will blow you away. Here, the Loire à Vélo ends its long journey from Nevers in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. After Angers, the last section, which leads from Nantes to Saint-Brévin-les-Pins after the large bridge in Saint-Nazaire, is especially beautiful. And art is also on the agenda, as you can admire installations created by the Voyage à Nantes for 60km along the estuary. Any other good ideas? We recommend the Loire Valley, a well-kept secret halfway between Le Mans, Angers and Tours. And then of course, invigorating cycling trips to the Vendée islands: to Noirmoutier, from marshes to mills, or to the island of Yeu, between dunes and enchanting creeks.

From the Luberon to the Baie des Anges in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The most courageous will include the Tour du Mont-Ventoux on their list, a giant of Provence which can be admired from all sides as you spin along small roads lined with garrigue and lavender. Try the Calavon greenway, on the Mediterranean bike route. You will enjoy riding along the small roads of the Luberon to discover the hilltop villages and electric assistance is obviously a good option. To have the Mediterranean at your feet, there's nothing better than the Littorale. Between Cannes and Nice or the other way round, this cycle path along the Baie des Anges and the Promenade des Anglais allows you to admire the most famous seafront in France. The Côte d'Azur is beautiful!

Before and After Your Trip

Paris, France

Paris is home to many of the world’s best-known monuments and museums. A backdrop of many famous photos, the Arc de Triomphe sits majestically at the top end of the Champs-Elysées. You can go to the observation deck for an expansive view down the world-famous boulevard from Napoléon’s huge triumphal arch—the largest in the world. The Arc isn’t the only site that offers a great view of the city, however. Other monuments where you can enjoy impressive vistas include the white dome of the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre, the 56th floor of the Tour Montparnasse, and of course at the summit of the most famous monument in Paris—la Tour Eiffel. The city also boasts some of the world’s best museums. At the top of the list is the Musée du Louvre where you can visit one of the world’s greatest art collections that include such famous works as the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. Immerse yourself in the natural and architectural grandeur of the verdant Loire Valley

Between the 13th and the 16th Centuries, French royalty built a spellbinding collection of beautiful Renaissance chateaux. On this bicycle tour of the verdant Loire Valley, you will visit the spectacular Chateau Chambord - the largest of the Loire Valley chateaux - built by Francois I and boasting a spectacular staircase by Leonardo da Vinci. You'll visit Chenonceau, the former divine dwelling place of Diane of Poitiers, Henry II's mistress. Henry's mistress, Catherine de Medici, would evict Diane from the property before building the iconic ballroom across the River Cher.

These chateaux are stunning and the itinerary of visits is wonderful, accompanied by sumptuous food, delicate wines, and an exploration of a valley famed for its astonishing natural beauty.

 Tour Description   Daily Program

Daily program

Day 1: Arrival in Montreuil Bellay You'll arrive at your lovely hotel in Montreuil Bellay by late afternoon. There'll be time to set up your bike and take it for a spin, but you are welcome to simply lounge by the pool and enjoy a cold pastis before dinner.

Montreuil Bellay is an intriguing village, perched as it is inside its wall atop a hill which overlooks the Thouet River. The village, 15 km south of Saumur, boasts a beautiful chateau, which owns the hotel where you'll spend your first night.

Overnight in Montreuil Bellay.

Day 2: Montreuil Bellay – Chinon (30 miles/48 km) Between Montreuil Bellay and your first splendid sight of the Loire Valley lies the Saumur-Champigny vineyard, rated by many as producing the finest red wine in the Loire. Today's first stop is Château Brézé, a wine-making estate most famous for its phenomenal underground chateau. Dating back to the 7th century, these troglodyte homes and villages are an incredible feature of this area. The limestone is so easily worked that it was easier to carve out a new room than to build one! One of the reasons behind the establishment of this underground chateau was to avoid the attention of invaders like the Vikings, with the whole chateau designed with defense in mind, including its moat, which is the deepest dry moat in Europe. The defensive structures at Château Brézé are fascinating. Most interestingly, it was never attacked, let alone defeated.

Leaving Brézé, you'll make your way to the Royal Abbey at Fontevraud. This huge abbey was traditionally the home of many French queens and other royalty, but is most famous as the resting place of Henry II, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their son Richard the Lionheart. After lunch in Fontevraud, cycle on little roads to an off-road track that follows the river Vienne into Chinon.

In the 12th Century, Chinon was effectively the English capital as successive kings made their home in the chateau. It is much older than most Loire chateau, and its military purpose is obvious from its commanding position along the ridge that overlooks the medieval town of Chinon.

Overnight in Chinon.

Day 3: Chinon – Azay-le-Rideau (25 miles/40 km) Today features fairly light cycling as you have a lot of chateau action to fit in! Begin with a tour of the castle of Chinon. As well as being home to English kings, the castle contains the tower where Joan of Arc heard the voices that told her she would be granted an army to relieve the siege of Orléans.

You'll leave the Vienne and continue your cycling tour back towards the Indre and the Loire. Overlooking the Indre is the first of the big-league chateau - Château Ussé - reputedly the inspiration for the castle in Sleeping Beauty.

Next on your list is Villandry, an unexceptional chateau, but with gardens that Michelin rate as a 3-star attraction - "worth a journey in their own right". There are three gardens: a vegetable garden, a flower garden, and a water garden. Each year, the gardening team chooses a theme and tells a story in flowers. Villandry is really something, and not to be missed.

Overnight at Hotel des Châteaux, on the outskirts of Azay-le-Rideau.

Day 4: Azay-le-Rideau – Loches (35 miles/56 km) In the morning, begin with a visit to one of the most beautiful chateaux of the Loire - Azay-le-Rideau. The little river Indre is dammed to surround the chateau on three sides and to create a beautiful lake and gardens.

Leaving Azay, spend all day cycling along the Indre Valley, acclaimed as the most beautiful landscape of all the rivers of the Loire Valley. Cycle in quiet countryside as you make your way to Loches, home of the Royal City of Loches. Visit the Royal City tomorrow morning, just a stroll (albeit a steep one) away from tonight’s hotel, the George Sands.

Overnight in Loches.

Day 5: Loches – Montrichard (30 miles/48 km) Today is a fabulous day. Begin at the Royal City, a short walk from the hotel. The Royal City consists of a Renaissance chateau as well as an older 'Donjon' - a traditional keep-style, much older chateau - used for much of its history as a prison.

Loches is where Joan of Arc gatecrashed the Crown Prince of Valois, directed him to go to Reims, be crowned the King of France, and 'boot the English out of France'! Joan of Arc is incredibly important in France. She was a real figure - the stories of her relieving the siege of Orléans, and ordering Charles to become King are all true, and she was only 17!

Leave Loches and cycle along a narrow forest path and quiet roads to the Château of Chenonceau - the most visited of all the Loire chateau. Spanning the River Cher, and surrounded by ornamental gardens and man-made moats, this chateau is truly unforgettable. Most of the rooms are open, and this is a chance to see original floors, tapestries, and furniture. In general, French chateaux don't have all the furnishings and interior detail still visible. Chenonceau is a pleasant exception, and Louise of Lorraine's room, painted entirely in black with silver motifs of tears and crowns of thorns to mourn her dead husband, is especially memorable.

The ballroom, built by Catherine de Medici, spans the Cher in spectacular fashion, and although the chateau had no military value, it took on a gloomy historical role in the 20th century. First, it served as an army hospital in the First World War. Then, in the Second World War, the Cher was the boundary between Nazi-occupied France and Vichy France. Château Chenonceau was a border post, each end of the ballroom opening into a different country.

Your hotel tonight is the Hotel Bellevue in Montrichard, a few kilometers upstream from Chenonceau, overlooking the Cher.

Overnight in Montrichard.

Day 6: Montrichard – Chambord (35 miles/56 km) A short ride beyond Montrichard leads you to the fascinating mushroom caves of Bourré where Blue Foot, Shitake, Oyster, and Paris mushrooms grow. Mushroom mycelia need a stimulus to prompt growth, whilst European mushrooms tend to need a light or heat stimulus. The shitake mushroom from Japan grows naturally on trees and responds to earth tremors common in that neck of the woods. Earthquakes are simulated in the caves using the state-of-the-art device of slapping the bin-liner that contains the mushroom compost. Result? Very many mushrooms! You'll find this stop fascinating. Bring something warm for a visit underground of around an hour.

As well as mushrooms, there are a few spectacular galleries where you can see fantastic sculptures of local village scenes through the ages carved from solid rock. If you’ve never seen a sheet of paper carved in limestone before, complete with curled-up corners and the heads of nails pinning it to a wooden board (also carved in limestone, complete with wood grain), then you’re in for a treat.

The end of today is a favorite part of the whole week - the enormous Château Chambord. This is by far the largest of all the Loire chateaux and was originally built by Francois I as a hunting lodge. It lies inside a huge park contained by the largest wall in Europe (32 km). The chateau itself contains a famous double-helix staircase designed by Leonardo da Vinci, where two people can ascend or descend at the same time without meeting.

Your hotel tonight is the Hotel St. Florent, 10 km from the chateau in Mont-pres-Chambord.

Overnight in Chambord.

Day 7: Chambord – Amboise (35 miles/56 km) The Loire cycle path into Amboise features a few hills, so be prepared for this. However, before that, you'll taste the wines at Vignoble Tevenot, a very traditional family winemaker in Cellettes, just on the edge of the enormous forests that surround Chambord.

The final destination of your tour is Amboise, where the setting of the chateau overlooking the Loire is one of the most used images of the Loire valley. The town has a medieval center, largely pedestrianized, and full of bustle. There are a number of bars and cafes sitting directly beneath the huge chateau walls, and you've earned a sit-down and a glass of the local Touraine or Vouvray!

For anyone who hasn't visited Leonardo da Vinci's home at the Clos-Lucé, it's well worth it. Many of the original furnishings are still in place, including the great man's bed, and there is a permanent exhibition of his inventions and writings including several exquisite scale models. There are touching examples of his philosophy, and wonderful models of inventions that worked, like an ingenious water pump. Definitely worth visiting.

Tonight's stay is at the Hotel Vinci and dinner is at the Lion d’Or.

Overnight in Amboise.

Day 8: Departure The TGV station at St. Pierre des Corps is only 20 minutes away, and if you booked the optional transfer, a gentle departure time of 10:30 am gets you back into Paris in the late morning for onward travel.

Loire Valley - Bike Trip you Want to Take!

This was a great choice for a bike trip! The roads are narrow and beautiful, but the drivers in France are incredibly patient. Each day we saw one or two chateaux. They are all quite different from one another, so I loved visiting every one! Our guide, Sam, was fantastic. He was personable and encouraged each of us in the way we needed. We upgraded to two chateaux and I would highly recommend doing that.

Great trip!

This trip was a great way to explore the Chateaus of the Loire Valley. The trip was over nice roads and was very scenic. We were a returning group with experienced riders, so we had a lot of fun and traveled at a good pace. Our guide, Sam Taylor, really made the trip. He was fun, engaged with us, knew his stuff and can change a tire at a remarkable pace. He is a fantastic guide. The only thing I would recommend is having the chateau tours included in the tour price. It was a real hassle having to get tickets for a large group at the site. I guess I thought the tickets were included in the tour. We had someone from our group pay for the tickets, but then we had to do a money exchange everyday which was a pain. I also thought some wine was included but we could get more if we wanted. We paid for

Fantastic Trip

This trip was even better than expected. The riding was enjoyable. The routes were mostly flat and lightly traveled roads or bike paths. Our guide, Sam, was very knowledgeable and personable. Hotels and meals were great too. We upgraded two hotels. A+

A Wonderful Tour of the Loire Valley Chateaux

This tour exceeded our expectations. First we wish to extend a huge thank you to Bernard and Lydia for agreeing to guide this tour even though we were the only 2 people who signed up for it. That was most generous and gracious. Bernard is knowledgeable, funny, and very kind. His guide-in-training, Lydia, who accompanied us added an extra amount of fun and was very willing to help with French translations. We feel very fortunate to have been on her first tour and know she will succeed in her future guided trips. Although our group was small we immensely enjoyed the hotels, the wonderful food and wine, the picnics, and the chateau visits. We were sad to have the trip come to an end. We highly recommend this trip and feel it is the best way to experience the chateaux of the Loire Valley.

The Loire Valley Chateau and Garden Tour

What a wonderful experience and a lovey biking trip. So enjoyed our guide Bernard and his vast knowledge of the area. The accommodations were excellent and the food was great. What more can I say other than my husband and I had a great time.

Just right!

A wonderful combination of sights, food, friends and fun! Bernard was the consummate host, helping us through the markets to buy group picnic lunches that everyone loved, finding routes that were uncrowded with traffic and scenic, answering all questions and smoothing out any bumps with a smile. The hotels were just right - comfortable and not too fancy given that we were only there to sleep. Bikes and equipment (rain gear, panniers, etc.) were excellent, and Bernard had the skills and carried the tools necessary to fix anything that wasn’t quite right. And the chateaus were stunning, as were the countryside and small villages along the way. May was a perfect time - dealing with summer crowds and heat would have been less fun. Occasionally we felt a bit rushed going through a large chateau, but we saw the highlights, and there were always many more things waiting for us down the road - like the small winery where the owner explained her many challenges and the cave which grows amazing mushrooms. And every day was capped off by a wonderful dinner, good wine and great conversation. Thank you Bernard and tour organizers for a wonderful trip!

The Perfect Bike Tour

There was no guided Loire Valley Chateaux and Gardens Tour scheduled by the local tour operator in May 2019, which is when our group wanted to go. We asked, and the tour operator was happy to add our requested week since we were a group of 8.

In summary, the tour and guide exceeded our expectations and hopes.

May is a fabulous time to do this tour. The high temperatures were generally in the mid-60s (about 18 degrees C), perfect for riding, there were only a couple of times when we had very light rain for a couple of hours. The wild flowers and garden flowers are in full bloom and everything else is fresh and green as it is in mid-spring. This was prior to the start of the heavy tourist season, so traffic is lighter than in July and August.

Our tour guide was wonderful. He gladly accommodated a couple of special needs. He focused on giving us a local experience in the accommodations, food, sightseeing, and bike paths we never would have found on our own. While we were frequently on roads where cars could go, these were roads used mostly by local farmers or workers and there was almost no traffic. Frequently we were on bike/pedestrian only paths. Almost of the surfaces were paved and the few packed dirt paths easy for bicycles. Bernard gave us loads of information about the villages and sights we saw, the local history, and what is going on in the Loire Valley today.

The accommodations are very nice in that you stay in small 2- or 3-star hotels with character and charm run by independent owners. Breakfast was always varied and hearty enough for a good start to the day. Dinners were very good at selected restaurants that highlighted the wonderful and varied local cuisine. We frequently did picnics for lunch (not included in the tour cost), which is what our group preferred, and our guide steered us to local products which were fresh and excellent.

The bikes were in great condition, and we had confidence that our tour guide could readily fix anything that might go wrong along the way.

Fabulous tour!

We thoroughly enjoyed our Loire Valley bike trip! We could not have had a better guide! He was attentive, incredibly knowledgeable, kind and funny. He even stopped to help another cyclist along the way who had a broken spoke. There was just the right amount of cycling, touring and eating. Our group is already making plans to do another trip next year in Europe.

Absolutely wonderful trip with a tour guide extraordinaire!

I base most of my "Excellent" ratings on our guide, Bernard Dugdale, from The Chain Gang Tour Company via Bike Tours. He provided an excellent and problem-free bike trip for all 13 people on this Loire Valley Tour.  He even pulled a rabbit out of a hat and secured train tickets for us while there was a train strike in France. He made sure everyone's bike "fit" them and was comfortable in every way.  He was fluent in French, a lot of fun, and seemed to have his finger on the "pulse" of what was going on with each and everyone of us and made sure we were all looked after, whether ordering in a restaurant or having a minor difficulty with our bike.  The castles were stunning and scenery beautiful. A+

Everything expected

Could not have duplicated the selection of hotels, restaurants, company, explanations, detailed trails, cultural explanations.

Slow and Easy Cycling the Loire Valley

In the fall of 2016 my wife and I went on this adventure. This was our second Bike Tours vacation and again it exceeded our expectation in every way. Each day we enjoyed beautiful scenery and toured amazing chateaux followed by an evening relaxing with exceptional wines and cuisine in small French villages. As always the trip ended all too soon but the video I made and posted here helps us relive one of our best vacations ever.

Lovely week in the Loire Valley

The perfect time to go on this tour is shoulder season; would be much too hot in the summer months; especially since some hotels did not have A/C. The local operator had great bikes (Treks) but we did experience a wheel problem on day 1 which they were not quick enough to address (we were on a self-guided tour). It was as if they did not believe us when we reported the problem. We had to be insistent they address it on day two rather than them wanting to take care of the problem. In all it cost us about 3 hours delay the first day and 2 hours on Day 2; missed two chateau visits as a result Loved the unusual routing for the tour but since it was off the beaten bike path, could have used more precise directions and maps. It would help if they said something like "After 3.2 miles go right on the gravel road" instead of "then take A32 right" because there was not always a sign for "A32".

BikeTours.com staff reply from Lindsay Nash October 19, 2016

Hi, thanks very much for sharing your experience. We're glad you had a lovely week in the Loire Valley. It's truly a beautiful place. We're sorry to hear of the trouble with the bikes, especially since you missed out on the chateaux visits. As an apology from us, we'd love to waive your booking fees on your next tour. Please just mention this next time you book! Thank you again for sharing your experience, which we will share with the local operator as we continually work to improve our offerings and services. Kind regards, Lindsay

History, culture, haute couture and haute cuisine aren’t all that France is famous for this year. The country’s iconic capital, Paris, may be warming up for the world’s largest sporting event this summer, but beyond the bustling boulevards, there are plenty of hidden gems for travelers to explore. With the enchanting regions of Champagne, Normandy, the Loire Valley and Burgundy, within easy reach, travelers can escape the crowds, enjoy the countryside and sample a different side of French life.

London scenery

POP THE CORKS

Approximately an hour and 45 minutes by car, travelers can escape the busy city life and gently roll into the Champagne region to immerse themselves in the art of champagne-making. Reims, the capital of the region famous for the world’s favorite fizz, is home to the city’s cathedral Notre-Dame, a UNESCO World Heritage site where French Kings were crowned.

Zip off on e-bike and take to the lush, rolling hills and explore one of the many Champagne vineyards on offer. From the historic cellars of the renowned champagne houses to the smaller family-owned producers, most offer tours and tastings, washed down with the region’s famous pink cookie that complements the delicious bubbles.

LIVING HISTORY

Home to the famous Bayeux Tapestry, 70 meters of intricate stitching that depicts the 1066 Norman conquest of Britain, Normandy holds special significance this year. June 6 marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings that changed the course of the Second World War. Visitors can pay their respects at the hallowed beaches of Omaha and Utah, where Allied forces made their historic landings, or at the moving American Cemetery.

A World War II veteran is greeted by an Army Ranger in Normandy in June 2023.

Virginie Durr, Enterprise Sales Manager at Delta, was born and raised in Normandy and visits every year for the D-Day commemorations.

“Normandy offers the perfect blend of scenery, history, culture and gastronomy,” said Durr. “What makes Normandy so special is the legacy of William the Conqueror, the historic scars left by WWII, the settings immortalized by the Impressionist artists, its distinctive local cuisine and its world-famous sites such as the Mont-Saint-Michel, Monet’s gardens in Giverny, the D-Day Landing Beaches or the dramatic cliffs of Etretat.”

A scenic photo of Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, France

For those wanting to visit Mont-Saint-Michel, which is the second most-visited monument in France after the Eiffel Tower, Durr has valuable tips for getting the most out of your experience: “Visit on weekdays rather than weekends, outside of holiday periods and long weekends, in autumn or winter.”

Travelers looking to further their exploration of Normandy should visit Honfleur, which is known for attracting artists over many centuries and features colorful half-timbered houses that line the picturesque harbor, providing the perfect backdrop for leisurely strolls along the waterfront.

Sylvie Poidevin, a Delta Red Coat stationed at CDG, says her favorite place in the city is "Les Maisons de Léa,” a charming hotel in the heart of Honfleur with a majestic view of Église Sainte Catherine – one of the oldest and largest wooden churches in France.

A photo of Église Sainte Catherine – one of the oldest and largest wooden churches in France

“If visiting, I would also recommend doing a boat tour led by a captain and having a coffee and croissant in front of the Vieux Bassin – one of the most frequently painted harbors in the world,” said Poidevin.

Deauville is around two hours and 45 minutes from central Paris.

CHATEAU LIFE

Around two and a half hours’ drive from Paris lies the Loire Valley. This UNESCO area of great cultural beauty is peppered with hundreds of castles – or chateaux – and produces some of France’s most delicious white wines, including Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé and Crémant – the region’s sparkling wine.

A walkway lined with potted trees leading to one of the many chateaus in Loire Valley, France

The area is perfect to explore by bike, especially as it’s mostly flat, and the 900km Loire à Vélo route is enjoyable for cycle pros and novices alike. In the summer months, pop up restaurants known as guignettes offer local specialties, while nights can be comfortably spent in four-poster beds in the many chateaux that offer accommodation along the route.

Famous Loire Valley towns not to miss include Samur, where an imposing castle towers over the flowing river and hundreds of underground caves, including an underground cathedral, lie under your feet. Tours, which was once a bustling Roman town, still boasts the ruins of an amphitheater.

MEDIEVAL MASTERPIECE

With its half-timbered buildings, gothic cathedrals and cobbled streets, the medieval city of Dijon casts visitors back in time. This laid-back university city offers a mix of history and delicious cuisine and is too often overlooked by American visitors.

A cobblestone street in the medieval city of Dijon, France

Small in size, Dijon is packed with sites of interest that visitors can easily discover on a self-guided walking tour following the Parcours de la Chouette, or Owl Trail. Marked by little owls, the tour includes every historical monument with explanations at every stop.

Foodies will be in food heaven in Dijon. Aside from the eponymous mustard (Dijon had exclusive mustard-making rights in France during the 17th century), the region is known for Burgundy wines and Boeuf Bourguignon, a rich beef casserole. It is also home to several Michelin-starred restaurants, for travelers wanting to splash out.

Dijon is located between Paris and Lyon (another city famous for cuisine), around four hours from the French capital.
