Introduction

A reunion tour for The Police had long been the hope and wish of many fans of the band since their last public performances together in 1986 . After many rumors and speculation about the possibility of concert appearances in 2007 , given the year would mark the band's 30th anniversary, the reunion tour was officially announced on 2007-02-12 during a world-wide live broadcast on television and the internet.

Rehearsals for the tour had begun in January of 2007 in Vancouver, Canada, and then resumed in March of 2007 at Sting 's studio at Il Palagio in Tuscany. Further rehearsals in Vancouver began in May of 2007 at the Squamish Indian reserve before the tour opened on 2007-05-27 with a Fan Club-only show.

Controversies and kerfluffles

The ever-changing finale.

  • On 2008-02-13 , the dates for the tour's final swing through North America were announced on the Billboard and Fox News websites with "a more or less final date" (Fox News) set for Long Island’s Jones Beach on 2008-08-04 . Fans quickly began to make plans to attend the finale show and buy tickets as soon as they were made available. However, on 2008-03-04 , a second Jones Beach performance date was announced for 2008-08-05 , making this now the last scheduled date for the tour. [1] Many fans were very upset about this announcement, as they felt they had been tricked into buying tickets for the August 4 date on the expectation that it was the last show. Many ThePolice.com members had used their presale codes for the show on August 4, others had made travel arrangements already from other countries to be at the finale, and now felt that the band and/or the tour management had spoiled the end of the tour for them through their "greed". [2] , [3] , [4] In an interview published in the Sun Sentinel on 2008-04-30 , Stewart Copeland acknowledged the controversy surrounding the announcement of the second Jones Beach show. According to Copeland, "Inside the bubble we thought this was a great idea...We would never have guessed (the controversy) or intuited that without the Web." [5]
  • On 2008-05-06 , The Police held a press conference in Times Square in New York City with Mayor Michael Bloomberg. They announced that they would be performing their "last concert ever", in the city of New York (date/location to be revealed later), and that it would be a benefit concert for local public broadcasting networks as well as the MillionTreesNYC project. [6] Fan reaction to the news was mixed, with many again expressing discontent that they had, for the second time, been lead to believe an earlier date would be the end of the tour. Concerns were expressed about the ability to resell tickets to the earlier "finale" shows now that a new finale was planned, as well as the difficulty of obtaining tickets to this new show or making extended/new travel plans. [7] , [8] , [9]

Finale ticketing shenanigans

  • On 2008-06-05 , a month after the new finale concert was announced, the details were finally revealed on the final concert location, date and ticketing. It would take place on 2008-08-07 at Madison Square Garden . Tickets would be sold through a PBS pledge drive with prices beginning at $150/pair and going up to $5,000 a pair for VIP access. [10] It was later announced that ThePolice.com , Citicard (the corporate sponsor of this leg of the tour), and PBS would all be having presales for their members. Only pairs of tickets could be bought through any of the sales, no singles would be made available. Many fans worked hard through the various presales beginning on 2008-06-09 to get tickets close to and behind the stage (an area known to Stewart Copeland fans as "Stew Heaven" and a particular favorite for drummer aficionados.) There was general disappointment among many members of ThePolice.com who found their presale seats, even at the Legacy membership level, inferior to the PBS presale ones, and no better (and sometimes worse) than the Citicard ones. [11] , [12] , [13]
  • On 2008-06-20 , fans reported checking their ticket orders and seeing that their ticket assignments had been changed without their knowledge to much inferior seats within the same price bracket. Even the date of their ticket purchases had been changed from 2008-06-09 and after to 2008-06-18 . All behind-the-stage seats were relocated to the upper 300 level, and some seated on the upper 300 levels were changed to the even higher 400 levels. Fans were completely outraged by this change, which meant that many of the biggest fans of the band who had worked hardest to get good seats were now stuck with some of the worst. Appeals were quickly made to Police HQ at ThePolice.com , Ticketmaster, and Stewart Copeland himself as he is generally perceived as the most fan-responsive member of the band. [14] , [15] , [16] , [17] , [18] To date there has been no official acknowledgement of the fan upset over this ticketing change, and the only options offered by Ticketmaster to correct this were refunds or an option to upgrade tickets at an increased price - but those who chose to upgrade would not know their exact seating assignment. There was continued disappointment and confusion after it was discovered in the first week of July that single tickets were now being sold via the Ticketmaster website, again often in better seating areas than had been available earlier and in the presales when single tickets were not allowed. [19]

Environmental concerns

  • In January of 2008 , The Police were singled out by environmentalists for the environmental impact of their global tour and named "the dirtiest band in the world". John Buckly, an environmental adviser from www.carbonfootprint.com, stated "At the Live Earth concert in New Jersey where The Police played, the biggest contribution to carbon emissions wasn't from the concert itself, it was the fans...The Police played lots of big stadiums - they need to be careful over where they play, and make sure it's near public transport." Sting in particular was singled out and called a "hypocrite" in the press for being a vocal supporter of green causes while seemingly not backing his words with appropriate action. [20] , [21]
  • The criticism would continue into the summer of 2008 over incidents such as Sting taking private jets by himself. [22] , [23]

Flashback: The Police Take a Last Bow on Their Reunion Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

The Police played an astounding 151 concerts on their 2007/08 reunion tour and grossed $362 million, and even that doesn’t include merchandise, sponsorship deals and the many other ways they found to cash in on the occasion. The three of them might not be best friends, and Sting ‘s idea of a fun year probably doesn’t involve singing “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” 151 times, but leaving all that money on the table would have involved Robert Plant-levels of restraint.

The tour wrapped up August 7, 2008 at New York’s Madison Square Garden, and they  donated the proceeds to public television in New York. Most every night on the tour opened up with “Message in a Bottle,” but at the farewell show they opened with Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love” as a tribute to a previous generation’s rock trio that never quite got along either. (Three years earlier, Cream played their own final concert at MSG.) Later in the night, they played “Purple Haze” to honor yet another short-lived trio.

Sting grew a beard throughout the final leg of the tour, but after closing the main set with “Every Breath You Take,” he went backstage and overhead screens showed two women shaving off the entire thing with amazing speed while others shined his shoes and gave him a manicure. He emerged shirtless and clean-shaven and, like every show of the tour, the band closed out the night with “Next To You,” the very first song on the Police’s 1978 debut LP.

After group bows, men came onstage in opera-style drag and a large woman mimed a bit of “Ritorna Vincitor” from Verdi’s Aida . (As they say, “It ain’t over until the fat lady sings.”) It was followed by the Looney Tunes theme, a little shimmy from Sting, Porky Pig stuttering his way through “That’s All, Folks,” a group photo in front of the stage, Sting yelling into the mic “Madison Square Garden, this is the center of New York City, the center of the world, thank you, thank you,” Stewart Copeland ripping his shirt off and the three of them walking offstage.

Odds are extremely high they’ll never play together again, but if the surviving Beach Boys could reunite for a tour, we suppose anything is possible.

Andy Summers, the Police on tour

'Whatever we do, this will always be the seminal band'

On page 253 of his compellingly readable memoir, One Train Later, Andy Summers logs the April 1978 release of the Police's Roxanne, adding tersely, "It gets reviewed by John Pidgeon in Melody Maker." That short statement telescopes into a more convoluted reality. True, for one issue only, I was MM's singles reviewer, though not until mid-October, by which time Roxanne was a six-month-old stiff. But that record was still a hit on my turntable, so I made it the yardstick by which I would judge the new releases.

Roxanne had come at me out of nowhere on a wavering car radio signal, as so much rock'n'roll of my short-trousered youth had, title or artist's name or both obscured by static, leaving only a half-heard lyric and melodic hook lodged in my brain along with a memory of the palpable thrill they had provoked. It took a trawl of record shops to track it down. "It was the Police's Roxanne, and it still makes me tingle," I preambled. "I had no idea who they were, and I still don't really, but I don't care. Roxanne is simply a great single." And if that reads like an all-too-obvious endorsement of an acknowledged pop classic, remember: Roxanne was a flop, a sleeper that wouldn't chart until May 1979.

My singles column appeared on Thursday October 12. No one had matched Roxanne - not Elton John, not PiL, not Bruce Springsteen. That afternoon A&M Records' press office rang, asking if I would be free to spend some time on the road with the Police in November. Let me check my diary. In the States? I'm free.

I had already seen the Police play live, at one of the scant 10 gigs they had played since April. The venue was the Nashville Room in West Kensington, and I was accompanied by two pals, former Faces keyboard player Ian McLagan, who'd been every bit as excited as I had on hearing Roxanne, and lugubrious, lovable Kevin Coyne, in whose band Andy Summers had played and who was intrigued by his erstwhile guitarist's punk makeover. While Kevin chuckled over Summers' bottle-blond hair, Mac and I scoured the sparse crowd for someone who might be Sting, our only sight of the singer having been an arty Xeroxed image on the single's sleeve. It was the parachute suit and peroxide crop that persuaded us we'd found him, but, to be certain, Mac asked, "You're Sting, aren't you?" to which Sting responded, "Yes, but you're Ian McLagan."

Half a lifetime later, on July 28 2007, after the first of two formidable performances at Boston's Fenway Park on the US leg of their reunion tour, the Police are convoyed back to their hotel with a full lights-and-sirens police escort, each intersection cleared of cross traffic, every red light run as green. Having sprinted from stage to car, Stewart Copeland heads for his room to shower. A couple in the lift have seen the cavalcade arrive going the wrong way up a one-way street. The woman will rail against this extravagant abuse of her top-rate tax dollars, but, before she does, her husband asks the still-sweating drummer what he has done to merit such treatment. Copeland grins and says, "Easy, why d'you think I named my band the Police?"

My band. Which it had been, originally. Having tired of the unwinnable race to recoup record company advances, been invigorated by the punk scene, and spotted a singing bass player in Newcastle ready to try his luck in London, Copeland had not only come up with a name for the group, but composed its entire repertoire of mile-a-minute thrash and found a three-chord Corsican guitarist, Henry Padovani, to help play it.

"It was a difficult period," confided Sting, that singing bass player, in 1978. "Stewart had wanted to form a new wave group, but I'd just come down from playing in a jazz group and I wasn't exactly keen, but I was inspired by the amazing energy of the whole thing, and I thought, 'Well, I'm new to London and I'm totally unknown, so I'll give it a go.' We did a 15-minute lightning set and I squealed and screamed."

Then Summers, already an experienced player, saw them at the Marquee. "I thought there was fantastic potential in Sting and Stewart," he explained. "I'd always wanted to play in a three-piece band and throughout all my years of playing I never had. I felt that the three of us together would be very strong. They just needed another guitarist and I thought I was the one." The group played a French punk festival as a four-piece; then there were three.

The effect of Summers' arrival was instant. "One by one, Sting's songs had started coming in," Copeland explained, "and when Andy joined, it opened up new numbers of Sting's we could do, so the material started to get a lot more interesting and Sting started to take a lot more interest in the group." Despite the lack of progress represented by those 10 UK gigs in seven months, Copeland insists today that he never doubted - "never for a second" - that the trio would make it, the core of his unshakable confidence being his belief in Sting.

"The minute I saw Sting," he recalls, "playing in the refectory [of St Mary's College, Newcastle], I thought, 'There is a unique talent that is going all the way to the top.' Once we were in a band together, I would go on stage knowing that whatever was going to go wrong, Sting was going to kick ass, and he wasn't going to quit until he'd got the place going."

Summers joined the Police in August 1977 - lending this current tour, which comes to the UK on September 4, the air of a 30th anniversary - and owns up to moments of doubt during those first 12 months. "We'd been at it for a year, and just basically hanging by a thread," he recalls. "There wasn't anything happening. There was no point in doing gigs, because we'd end up with about two quid each a night. Then we lined up that first little tour of the East Coast of the US, and that's where it started."

I met them in Washington, DC, on November 10 1978, and took advantage of my tab at the Watergate Hotel, several stars swankier than the band's budget accommodation, to treat them to dinner. After two shows at the Atlantic Club, I joined them in their van for the drive to Philadelphia, where they played the half-empty Grendel's Lair, then we drove to New York for two final gigs at CBGB.

The tour had been made possible by three things: Freddie Laker's pioneering Skytrain, which delivered the trio and their tour manager to New York for £100 each; an Econoline van with two rows of seats and space behind for equipment, which their manager, Miles Copeland (Stewart's brother) had bought earlier in the year for a Squeeze tour; and the support of a third Copeland, Ian, an agent who would not have picked up the phone to book $200 club gigs for anyone other than his kid brother. That fee covered two modest hotel rooms, fuel for the van, and a $20 per diem each for food and drink. Some nights they made more, which took care of extras and their flights back to the UK.

On my own (non-Laker) flight home, I composed the opening paragraph of my piece: "The Police are not punk. The Police are not disco. The Police are not heavy metal. The Police are not power pop. The Police are just the best rock and roll band I've seen in years." I assured MM's editor they would be the next big thing and, as such, deserved the cover, but when the issue appeared they had been demoted to an inside spread, with rockabilly voodoo weirdos the Cramps on the front instead.

By then the Police were back in the UK, supporting student favourites Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias on a short tour, during which it became clear to Summers that "there was something serious happening. The period of self-doubt probably disappeared with the Alberto gig in Bath [on December 1], where there was just this mob scene and hysterical girls, and that was the moment when we went, 'Wait a minute.' That was a turning point, and we started to go like a rocket after that."

Six years earlier, my first major assignment as a music journalist had been to tour, riotously, with the Faces, and as recently as July 1978 I'd caught the end of the Stones' US tour in California, more fun and games. But in Washington, with the Police, I visited the National Air and Space Museum; on a night off in Philadelphia we went to the cinema; and in the van we talked about books. Photographed in New York, Sting hid neither his glasses nor the copy of Daniel Martin he was reading. I remember thinking, sure, the other way is fun, but there's no denying theirs is a practical, economic approach to touring. Those thoughts stayed with me, until, reading One Train Later, I came across Summers' sardonic description of his on-the-road self in 1982: "I am a rock-and-roll asshole, an emaciated millionaire prick." How did he get to that from where I'd left them? Could the clue be in the penultimate word? "It got much more dissolute as time went on," he confirms. "It did turn into the usual clichéd stuff, where everywhere we turned up there was a party. The rot set in. You know, the water keeps hitting the rock and it finally starts to crumble." Sting's assessment of their excess is more moderate. "We never really qualified as rock and roll animals ever," he says. "It never crossed my mind to trash a hotel room or get completely fucked up. We dabbled."

By the early 80s, of course, the Police had become the biggest band in the world, in August 1983 playing Shea Stadium in New York, a marker for mega-popdom set in 1965 by the Beatles. By then the three were reputed to be permanently at each other's throats. Yet, in 2005, when Stewart Copeland got round to editing the 50 hours of Super-8 he had shot on the road and in the studio for his film, Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out, and he reached the moment where the band broke up, the only footage he could find was of them goofing around. While pointing out that he would not have been filming when they weren't getting on, he admits that Sting's anguished look, inserted into the film to signify strife, was in reality a frown of concentration as the singer worked on a vocal harmony.

"People have asked what went wrong back in the day," Copeland expands, "and the answer is it didn't go wrong, it went rather well actually. We broke up at exactly the right time. What would have gone wrong is if we had stuck together to the point where we hated each other and started to hurt each other and self-destruct. That would have been wrong."

After the final gig in Melbourne in 1984, all three, he says, "hit the ground running." Each made signally non-Police music. Sting's first solo album, The Dream of Blue Turtles, was "a real patchwork of all kinds of styles. I was just having fun as a songwriter, and I carried that on in the interim." Summers formed new musical alliances, played jazz, pursued his interest in photography. Most strikingly, for a decade Copeland didn't pick up a drum stick. "I was a film composer, and not only that, but I was desperate to escape type-casting as the drum-score film composer, and so for many years I was writing scores with no discernible rhythm at all. I went a little too far, as you do when you've got something to prove."

In his memoir Summers writes of "the ache of something unresolved ... The problem with the demise of our group is that we didn't play out all our potential," though he now admits: "We had it all there in a way. But I definitely felt wounded afterwards. It felt like something was stolen and I had to deal with it. Then I occasionally thought, 'Maybe it was the best thing to do.' I didn't just want to be in a pop band."

Distilled into a two-hour live show, the Police's musical history feels fulfillingly complete. Every stage of their musical journey, from the proto-punk of Next To You to the enigmatic universality of Every Breath You Take, is revisited. And, surprisingly perhaps, although the songs are all familiar, they still sound vital, visceral, with emotion or meaning still to impart.

Confounding red-top gossip, the three are emphatic that some form of alliance survived the intervening years. Copeland says, "We have a basic underlying respect and, I would say, love for each other, the three of us. There's a bond there that none of us can shake off." Sting agrees: "Relations with Andy and Stewart have always been cordial. We didn't see much of each other, but it's bullshit that we've been at loggerheads for years and years."

"Over the last twenty years," Copeland adds, "people in my company have assumed that what I like to hear is Sting-bashing, so I hear a lot of it, and I'm sure I don't need to tell you what the opinions are. I tell these friends of mine, 'If Sting was here now with a guitar in his hands, you would within moments realise he's the most talented, gifted musician you've ever met - ever.' Because he is."

"Despite all the crap written about us, how we all hate each other, we're not like that, it's such bullshit," Summers confirms. "If that was the truth, we wouldn't have been able to come back together and do this. Whatever we do, this is always going to be the seminal band we were all in."

While Copeland was assembling his film, Summers was writing his book, a project with the potential, he became increasingly aware, to put paid for good to any chance of a reunion. But he stuck to his aim "to be completely honest, not to do some varnished story. What I was interested in was the fragility of it, how it's always about to collapse at any point, and how difficult it is to bring three egos together and sustain it for a long period of time. It was necessary to talk about the arguments, the difficulties, the tension, as well as paying tribute to the talents of the other two. When I got the book out, I thought they may never speak to me again, but in fact the reverse happened. Sting was very complimentary."

Recalling his suggestion for the running order of the Police's final album, Synchronicity, Summers wrote spikily: "Sting likes this idea, and thus it is ordained." If a reunion was ever going to take place, Sting would need to like that idea too - as eventually he did, surprising even himself.

"I woke up one morning in November last year, and the John Dowland record [Songs From the Labyrinth, Sting's lute recordings] had just gone in the charts, so I was very happy about that, and I thought, 'What do I do now? Should I do that again? No, that'll paint me into a corner. Do I do another Sting album? No, I'm not really ready for it. What do I do to surprise people? Or surprise myself even?' And this little voice said, 'You reform the Police.' And another little voice said, 'Don't be ridiculous, you don't want to do that,' but this persistent voice said, 'No, that'll really surprise everyone.' And surprise, as you know, is everything in this business. So I had a meeting with my manager, floated the idea, and she fell off her chair. We phoned Andy and Stewart, and they didn't believe it either, because I'd been so adamant. If you'd asked me the day before, I would've said, 'You're out of your fucking mind. I don't want to do that.' But suddenly everybody clicked with it, it just triggered something, and the timing was perfect."

With Sting long accustomed to tailoring the musical setting for his solo shows - "having my own way or 'You're fired!'" - what form would the line-up take? Backing singers? A keyboard player? Horns? Summers, for one, was initially apprehensive. "In the early days we did one tour with backing singers and one with saxophones, which I personally hated. I thought, it's got to be the band, the three of us, or not at all, and there was absolutely no contest about that. Because Sting is a natural musician, he's a player. He's not some singer who's got old and fat, he's the real thing."

"My instinct was it should be us raw, warts and all," Sting says, "and I was pleasantly surprised at the first rehearsal. Although it certainly wasn't polished, there were still moments of, 'Oh, that's why we were good, that's why we were successful.' So rehearsal was just about joining those moments together and expanding them, and I think we're still on the way."

Their once-teenage fans are now in their 40s, and from his drum stool Copeland has observed other changes: "At the front we used to have a lot of teenage females fainting. Now we have grown men weeping." Weeping for what? Their lost youth? "I guess that's what it is. There are certain songs, and I look out there and they're weeping inconsolably. It makes me feel good. It hits me with, 'I guess it must be important what we're doing.' I mean, it isn't, it's just music, but it does affect people - and that affects me."

The reunion is scheduled to end in February 2008, when Copeland is looking forward to getting back to being a composer and suburban dad, and Summers will be braced for a post-tour crash before immersing himself in diverse projects. Sting, as always, is eager to embrace the future. "Nothing goes on forever, and once you accept that, that's a great relief," he says. "If I thought I was agreeing to be manacled for ever to this thing, like Sisyphus, I wouldn't have come into it. I think freedom, even to go back, is what I want - to contradict myself, to go back on what I thought was dogma, to be open."

So what is this bond, the shared chemistry that took these three from half-empty clubs to the biggest stages in the world, and still has people filling stadiums to see them? Does the man who formed the Police have the answer? "There are times when Sting and I shake our heads at the disparity in our music values," Copeland offers, "and yet there are 60,000 people out there that want to hear us play together. How's that possible? We disagree so deeply and profoundly about fundamental pillars of our artistic philosophy that sometimes we look at each other and it's not just like we come from different planets, but that different rules of physics apply, and, like I say, we shake our heads and wonder at the strangeness of life that you put these two value systems together and something happens that makes people cry."

The Police announce plans for reunion tour

The Police announced their first tour in decades Monday at a rehearsal at the Whisky a Go-Go as a throng of fans crowded near the legendary Sunset Strip nightclub.

The group, which led off Sunday night’s Grammy Awards with a live performance, broke up in 1984. Members Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland have since pursued individual careers.

The packed club got a taste of Police hits, “Roxanne” and “Message in a Bottle,” and listened to the members talk about the decision to reunite and joke about the conflicts that led to their split.

“I woke up one morning about three months ago — and this light bulb went off in my head. ... I’m going to call Andy and Stewart,” Sting said. “What’s happening is sort of very healing.”

His bandmates kidded about Sting’s demanding personality.

“We refer to Sting as our dear leader,” Copeland said.

“On a good day,” Summers added.

They insisted the disputes that broke them up were artistic, not personal.

The Police plan a world tour of arenas, stadiums and some festivals beginning in North America on May 28 in Vancouver, moving to Europe in September and October, then re-crossing the Atlantic.

Some confirmed cities include New York, Boston, Seattle, Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, New Orleans, St. Louis, Toronto and Montreal. The group will headline the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Tennessee.

“It’s going to be three guys on stage, that’s all,” Sting said. “The show is going to look simple but spectacular.”

The group plans to stick to Police material and not include Sting’s solo hits.

They sidestepped questions about whether the reunion might extend to recording new music.

Tickets for the North American leg will range from $50 to $225. A portion of proceeds will go to WaterAid, an anti-poverty organization that seeks to provide poor people access to safe water.

Live reviews

The Police concert was one of, if not the best, live shows I have ever attended.

The show was at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, outdoors on a hot July night. The atmosphere was magical, absolutely electric. It was so exciting!

The Police hadn’t toured for years, and now they were back, live, and no one there was going to miss a second! This was my first time seeing The Police live, and I was really surprised at how engaged they were with the crowd. I had expected pretty much a straight set list, with a break in the middle, but the band talks a lot during their shows. Lots of jokes, unscripted conversation and interaction with the audience

.This show was part of the 30th Anniversary Tour, so the set list was classic – they opened with Message in A Bottle, and played all their hits – Synchronicity, Don’t Stand So Close to Me, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da, Roxanne and of course Every Breath You Take. The crowd sang along quite a bit, and was encouraged by the band. This show will always stick out in my memory. Just seeing The Police was great of course, but the outside venue, the crowd standing on the field, right up close to the stage and the hot summer night made it even more special.

The Police amazed by reaction to comeback tour

The band say it's 'beyond what we hoped'

the police comeback tour

The Police ‘s current comeback tour has overcome a difficult start to go “possibly beyond what we hoped”, according to guitarist Andy Summers .

The trio of Summers , singer-bassist Sting and drummer Stewart Copeland are touring together for the first time in 23 years, and is tipped to be the biggest grossing tour in the world this year. And Summers , 64, admits the band can’t quite believe the response to their return.

He told JAM! Music : “We’re just having one knockout show after another. We keep thinking we’ve done the best show we’ll ever do and then somehow we do another one that we seem to have upped the ante.

“We’ve become very sure of the material and onstage now it’s just gotten faster, looser and funnier. There’s a lot of humour and antics now. I mean, we’re sort of loosening up with it. I think (in) our little mini-universe, we’re very sure of where we are now.”

He added: “The tour just sort of exploded, so it’s actually gone possibly beyond what we hoped. In reality, that seems to be fulfilling the mythology.”

The tour got off to a trick start when Copeland called Sting “a petulant pansy” and said “ Andy is in Idaho ” on a blog following the opening Vancouver shows in May.

Summers admitted: “We sort of passed through that and sort of laughed about it in the end. You know, it’s an idle moment in your hotel bedroom that went sort of wrong, not because necessarily of Stewart ‘s warped sense of humour, but because the media pick it up and turn it into a negative.

Recommended

“That’s why we end up hating the media, ’cause it’s such bullshit. It’s got nothing to do with reality or the band. It wasn’t the greatest move, but anyway, there you go.”

The Police ‘s sold-out UK shows kick off on September 4 at Birmingham National Indoor Arena . The band will also play dates in London , Manchester and Cardiff .

Sting reveals why The Police will never ever be reuniting again

16 May 2023, 10:27

In a new interview, Sting has poured cold water on rumours of a future reunion with The Police.

By Thomas Curtis-Horsfall

The internal fighting which led to The Police's eventual break up was well-documented.

In 1984, the new wave trio were arguably the biggest band in the world, but would call it quits that year.

Throughout their seven-year career together as The Police , creative tensions between bassist and singer Sting , drummer Stewart Copeland , and guitarist Andy Summers would frequently boil over.

When they disagreed, not only did they have a difference of opinion, sometimes they'd even come to blows in physical altercations.

So once they'd reached the peak of their powers together as a band, all three members decided to go their separate ways.

That was until their reunion in 2007 when they toured the world as The Police once again, in what became the third-highest-grossing tour of all time (at the time).

Not only was it a huge commercial success, their tour also courted enormous critical praise, leaving the door open for another potential coming together.

Steward Copeland recently revealed in his interview with Smooth Radio that despite "a lot of the tension" they shared, the trio are now back on good terms once again.

Sting has followed up with his own new interview in Music Week however, pouring cold water on rumours of a future reunion.

The Police called it quits in 1984 after years of in-fighting and

When asked if he thought bands should reunite ever, he laughed: "Once!" before going on to explain that bands "should do it once and the timing should be right."

"When the Police reunited, it had been long enough and it was the right time to do it. And I'm taking credit for that because that was my decision" Sting continued.

"Doing it again would just be gratuitous and that won't happen. But we did it, and everyone was happy that Mum and Dad got back together again and had one last fling."

The ' Fields Of Gold ' singer also agreed with Copeland's assessment of why tensions between the three bandmates opening reached explosive levels.

the police comeback tour

The Police Band Breakup

"It's an intense relationship. You start out in a band together and you live together; you sleep in the van together; you share hotel rooms. Your life is completely welded with the other guys in the band, and that's intense."

"We still love each other and respect each other, but I'm happy not to be in a band. I have much more freedom and when I have my own band, everyone's role is very clear. We just get on with the job."

"When a young band starts out, the roles are much more flexible and that creates tensions. But it's all-natural, of course...I think it gives you a competitive energy, a buzz."

Sting was also fairly candid about how his ego affected how the band began to perform together, and feels it right to stay as separate entities.

"There comes a point where it just gets in the way of the creative process and you're dealing with ego as opposed to actual musical ideas or the currency of musical ideas. When the flow stops, that's when a band has to break up."

Sting went on to confirm that he, Copeland and Summer hadn't considered writing more songs together, saying: "It was – what's the word – nostalgia, with recreating that thing for a short time. No, we didn’t even try."

Stewart Copeland seemed more positive about a full-scale reunion during his Smooth Radio interview however, saying: "Hey, look, I'm optimistic. I would give us at least a 1% chance."

"You know, we are enjoying each other's company. We get along really well. In fact, even when we were screaming at each other in the studio over dinner, we'd be laughing and joking. And we were deeply bonded."

"We went through a lot together, and we are like siblings, deeply bonded. And it's nice like this" Copeland told Smooth's very own Jenni Falconer .

"And I'm enjoying in fact, we have laughed amongst ourselves. We're in touch by email and so on. We send each other daft Instagram clips and so on."

At least the trio are back on good terms, but it doesn't look like they'll be hitting the road or the studio together any time soon.

The Police guitarist Andy Summers recalled in an interview with The Telegraph how much money he made during the group’s reunion tour back in 2007. Formed in London back in 1977 by Summers, bassist and singer Sting and drummer Stewart Copeland , the trio became popular in the late 70s and early 80s and have sold more than 75 million records worldwide.

They were active from 1977 to 1986 and only performed again in 2003 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Gwen Stefani. Their World Reunion tour happened from May 2007 to August 2008 and had shows in Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America. It is one of the highest-grossing tours of all time, with revenues reaching over $360 million dollars.

Guitarist Andy Summers recalls how much money he made during The Police reunion

“The 2007 Reunion Tour was a giant pay-off for all of us and quite incredible: the most money I’ve ever made. We sold out every stadium in the world.”

“And I hate to say it. Well no, I don’t hate to say it. I think I was the highest-paid guitarist in the world during that Reunion Tour. I got about $1m a night. And we did 150 nights. Someone’s got to do the job.”

During that tour, The Police played all their classics like: “Message in a Bottle”, “Don’t Stand So Close to Me”, “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, “De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da”, “Can’t Stand Losing You”, “Roxanne”, “King of Pain”, “So Lonely”, “Every Breath You Take” and “Next to You”.

The big hit song that was written using Summers’ cheap guitar

In the same interview when asked which famous songs were written using his hybrid Telecaster he bought off a kid in Los Angeles for 200 bucks, he talked their biggest hit:

“Probably ‘Every Breath You Take’. It’s the song that’s had the most plays in American radio history. As for how much we’ve made from it, I think there’d be several zeros there, and it’s still going on. It never ends.”

“There’s only about five bands that have done this: us; The Beatles; The Rolling Stones; maybe The Who. Not certain; maybe Pink Floyd.”

Andy Summers

Born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, England back in 1942, Andy Summers is known for being The Police guitarist but he also worked composing film scores and exhibited his photography work in galleries.

Since The Police ended in 1986, Summers released 13 studio albums and played with other musicians.

Iconic band announce anniversary tour more than 20 years after earworm hit single

Get your raving shoes on – Scooter are back with a massive comeback tour hitting venues across the UK.

The German techno band – made up of H. P. Baxxter, Marc Blou, Jay Frog, and Jens Thele – are embarking on their 30th-anniversary tour later this year with shows in London , Manchester , Birmingham , Newcastle, Dublin, Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Cardiff.

It comes more than 20 years after the release of their smash hit single The Logical Song, originally by Supertramp, which reached number 2 in the UK Singles Charts.

Tickets for the shows go on pre-sale on Wednesday, April 10, at 10am, followed by general sale on Friday, April 12 also at 10am.

The tour coincides with the release of the band’s milestone 21st studio album Open Your Mind and Your Trousers, including singles Rechno is Back, Rave & Shout, Waste Your Youth, and For Those About To Rave.

Scooter kicked off the mammoth tour in Germany last month, with it continuing through Europe until the group arrive on UK shores in October and November.

Rick J Jordan, H. P. Baxxter, and Ferris Bueller of Scooter.

The four-piece formed in 1993 and has sold a whopping 30 million records to date, earning more than 80 gold and platinum music awards/

They have landed 23 top ten hits, and are considered the most commercially successful German single-record act.

Scooter have produced several well-known singles across the world, including Hyper Hyper, How Much Is the Fish?, Maria, Jumping Over The World, and The Question Is What Is the Question?.

They released The Logical Song in 2001, which became the band’s highest-charting single of their career and was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

It was the 15th best-selling single of 2002 and was one of the anthems synonymous with rave culture in the 2000s.

Scooter’s music – especially their wacky lyrics that have experienced plenty of praise on TikTok – as well as their wild outfits, Baxxter’s luminous bleach blonde hair, and pyrotechnic-filled performances have seen them become household names across the globe.

Speaking to City Magazine in 2019, vocalist Baxxter reflected on the impact Scooter have had on the electronic music industry.

‘I’ve always loved bands with strong stage presence. When I was a teenager listening to hard rock, I loved Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore, who destroyed his guitar at every concert.

‘Even then, I knew it was a staged part of the show, but that didn’t diminish the excitement I felt when he smashed it. When I think about the pyrotechnics we used on the first tours, compared to today’s explosive shows, I just smile.’

Speaking about their legendary live shows, he continued: ‘At one point we were spending more on pyrotechnics than we could make in tickets, but we could afford it because the shows were selling massive amounts of records.

‘Every single we put out went gold or platinum, and then all of a sudden, albums started selling. Of course, this has completely changed, but fortunately, pyrotechnics have also become cheaper and we don’t have to dwell on it.’

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Country music singer Morgan Wallen has been arrested after police say he threw a chair off the rooftop of a newly opened six-story bar in downtown Nashville.

Wallen, 30, was booked into jail early Monday on three felony counts of reckless endangerment and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, Metro Nashville Police tweeted.

The charges stem from a chair being thrown from the rooftop of Chief’s bar and landing on Broadway near two police officers.

An arrest affidavit says the chair landed about 3 feet (1 meter) from officers, who talked to witnesses and reviewed security footage. Witnesses told officers that they watched Wallen pick up a chair, throw it over the roof and laugh about it.

Wallen’s attorney, Worrick Robinson, confirmed the arrest late Sunday and said the singer was cooperating fully with authorities. He was released from custody, and has a court date scheduled May 3.

Wallen is one of the biggest names in contemporary country. His third studio album, 2023’s “One Thing at a Time,” was the most-consumed album in the U.S. last year. It spent 16 weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 in 2023 — which meant he held the top spot for 30% of the year, more time at No. 1 than any other album since Adele’s “21” dominated over a decade ago. It included several top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: “Last Night,” “You Proof,” “Thinkin’ Bout Me,” “Thought You Should Know,” and “Don’t Think Jesus.”

In 2021, the country singer was suspended indefinitely from his label and saw his music pulled by radio stations and streaming services after video surfaced of him shouting a racial slur . As a result, he was disqualified or limited from several award shows and received no Grammy nominations for his bestselling “Dangerous: The Double Album.”

In 2020, he was arrested on public intoxication and disorderly conduct charges after being kicked out of Kid Rock’s bar in downtown Nashville.

At the time, Wallen posted on social media that he and some friends were “horse-playing” after a few bar stops.

“We didn’t mean any harm, and we want to say sorry to any bar staff or anyone that was affected,” Wallen posted on X. “Thank you to the local authorities for being so professional and doing their job with class. Love y’all.”

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.

the police comeback tour

After Denny McCarthy's wild comeback, Akshay Bhatia prevails in playoff to win the 2024 Valero Texas Open

F or those who have followed Akshay Bhatia's decorated golf career, the fact that the 22-year-old phenom captured his second PGA Tour title on Sunday — earning his first berth into a major tournament — might come as no surprise.

But the way Bhatia won, bludgeoning most of the field along the way and then outlasting a wily veteran in a playoff? That certainly might have the golf world doing a collective double-take.

Bhatia finished off one of the most impressive and improbable wire-to-wire victories in recent memory, fending off a heroic charge by runner-up Denny McCarthy on Sunday afternoon, and finding his way into the winner's circle at the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course.

McCarthy forced a playoff with an incredible string of eight birdies in the final nine holes, and after he buried a seventh-straight birdie putt it appeared he might be poised for his first PGA Tour victory.

Bhatia responded with a huge birdie putt of his own on the 18th hole, and then watched as McCarthy made a surprising and fatal mistake by chunking a wedge from 100 yards out on the playoff hole and splashing it into a creek.

Adding a little more drama, Bhatia then asked for his shoulder to be taped up by a trainer before his approach on the playoff hole, telling those on hand that he pulled it out of its socket during a fist-pump celebration.

Bhatia has won at every level and Saturday marked the 10th anniversary of his appearance at the Drive, Chip & Putt at Augusta National, where he finished sixth in the 12-13 age category.

At the ripe age of 15, Bhatia won the 2017 Junior PGA Championship, breaking a course record at the Country Club of St. Albans, and cruising to a three-stroke victory. He added a number of major junior events a year later, including the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley and the Rolex Tournament of Champions.

He later became the third-youngest player to win a Korn Ferry Tour event, when he took home the title at The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic, with only Sungjai Im and Jason Day doing so at a younger age.

None of this has fazed Bhatia, who continues to work hard, keep his nose to the grindstone and focus on the next major hurdle.

"I'm just true to myself. I've never had an easy life growing up, so anytime anyone sees that, oh, this kid's making a ton of money, he's playing on the PGA Tour, he's won on the PGA Tour, that's just not it," Bhatia said after his third round of play, "There's so much more to it than just the golf. For guys coming up from PGA Tour U or Nick Dunlap, for instance, winning on the PGA Tour, like there's going to be a lot for them to learn and hopefully being peers with them, it kind of can help them along the way and kind of grow up faster."

Bhatia acted like a veteran in the latter stages on Sunday, as he had a four-stroke lead heading into Sunday, pushed that advantage to six after the fourth hole, but then watched as McCarthy put on an impressive display on the back nine at the Greg Norman-designed course.

McCarthy's birdie barrage started just after the turn as he knocked off strokes on Nos. 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 to pull within one.

On the 17th, a drivable par-4, McCarthy missed right in the rough, while Bhatia dropped his in a bunker off to the right side of the hole. Both players put their second shots to within five feet, but Bhatia missed his putt, marking the first time in 52 times during the tournament that he missed from that distance.

Bother players made birdies on the 18th hole, then Bhatia capitalized on McCarthy's playoff miscue to take the $1.65 million first prize.

Country star Morgan Wallen arrested in Nashville at Eric Church's Chief's for throwing chair: Police

the police comeback tour

Eleven-time 2023 Billboard Music Award-winning country music performer Morgan Wallen was arrested late Sunday at Chief's, the six-story Nashville honky-tonk recently opened by his business partner and longtime confidant Eric Church.

Wallen has been charged with three counts of reckless endangerment and one count of disorderly conduct.

In a police report, the 30-year-old singer was accused of throwing a chair from the establishment's rooftop down to the street below while the bar just before 11 p.m. Metro Nashville police officers were standing in front of the bar and saw the chair hit the ground just feet from where they were standing, the report said.

Officers who viewed security footage saw Wallen "lunging and throwing an object over the roof," the report said.

Witnesses said Wallen laughed afterward.

In a statement issued to the Tennessean by Wallen's representatives, Wallen's lawyer, Worrick Robinson of Worrick Robinson Law, noted, "At 10:53 p.m. CT Sunday evening, Morgan Wallen was arrested in downtown Nashville for reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. He is cooperating fully with authorities."

Wallen was released around 3:30 a.m. Monday on $15,250 bond. He is due in court on May 3, a date that coincides with one of three planned concert dates at Nashville's Nissan Stadium . The singer is scheduled to perform there May 2-4.

No statement has been issued yet about the April 20, 2024, make-up date for his canceled 2023 appearance at Oxford, Mississippi's Vaught-Hemingway Stadium or if his headlining appearance at the Stagecoach Festival on April 28 will be canceled in light of his recent arrest.

Last year, Wallen said he needed vocal rest on April 24, 2023 and canceled that show. It was only 11 dates into his seven-month global tour. He refunded the cost of the tickets.

"I am so sorry, I promise you guys I tried everything I could," he said at the time.

Morgan Wallen's history with Lower Broadway

Wallen has a history of run-ins with the law on Lower Broadway.

On May 24, 2020 , Wallen was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct outside of Kid Rock's honky-tonk in downtown Nashville.

In the arrest warrant, the Metro Nashville Police Department said Wallen got kicked out of Kid Rock's Big Ass Honky Tonk Rock N' Roll Steakhouse at about 11 p.m. for "kicking glass items." On the street, police said he verbally fought with passersby while officers watched.

"Officers gave (Wallen) several opportunities to walk away with his friends, but he refused to walk away," Metro said at the time, noting that he was "a danger to himself and the public."

Wallen recently announced that he will open a Nashville bar called 'This Bar' in 2024 to pay homage to his Tennessee roots. The six-story establishment will be located at 107 4th Avenue North on Lower Broadway and is planned as a live music venue and restaurant.

The bar's title comes from Wallen's 2019 song of the same name, where he sings, "I found myself in this bar / Making mistakes and making new friends."

In a press release announcing the opening, Wallen said, “I sing about finding myself in 'This Bar,' and now it's coming to life. This venue will hold true to everything I love and is inspired by my fans and the way they have embraced me and my music."

Morgan Wallen's 2024 at-present

Sunday saw Wallen not attending CMT's 2024 Music Awards in Austin, Texas .

In response to a 2021 controversy surrounding him being recorded while drunkenly using a racial slur in front of his home, CMT had removed Wallen's music from all of their platforms. The ban has remained in effect for three years.

"We do not tolerate or condone words and actions that are in direct opposition to our core values that celebrate diversity, equity & inclusion," CMT representatives said via social media.

Wallen was at Chief's after returning to Nashville from a headlining domestic kick-off for his nationwide "One Night at a Time" tour at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium on April 4 and 5. Attendance for both of those dates set the venue's attendance record.

Church and Wallen's business interests

Chief's opened on April 5 with the first night of the venue's Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year namesake's "To Beat The Devil" residency. The event was held in the intimate, 400-person Neon Steeple venue.

Church's venue was announced in early 2022, with AJ Capital leading the renovation.

AJ Capital has become a leading real estate developer in Music City during the past decade.

Collaborations with Church for Chief's and Wallen, via his Morgan Wallen Foundation and donors, including Church (via the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee and the Chief Cares Fund) to work on the renovation of North Nashville's historic Club Baron venue are two ways in which they have recently engaged with Nashville's music community.

Also, Church and Wallen recently announced a partnership to acquire and relaunch the 152-year-old Field & Stream outdoor lifestyle brand.

Among the pair's forthcoming Field & Stream-branded concepts are a limited-edition apparel collection and the announcement of an outdoor fall "Field & Stream Music Festival" co-produced by Southern Entertainment.
